Hi All! Thanks for taking the time tonight to join our #d100chat. We hope you take away some new mentor texts to bring back to your classroom this year! #d100inspires
Hi Chatterboxes! Bazz here, principal of Pershing School! Pumped to talk about mentor texts with my girls Meg & Colletti! Also excited to hear about new books!!!! #d100chat#teampershing#d100inspires
A1: To me, a mentor text is any text you both enjoy and can use to teach a skill. There isn't a perfect length, a perfect genre, or a perfect lexile. Mentor texts showcase a teacher's love a reading and a student specific comprehension strategies. #d100chat
A1: A mentor text is a book that used for multiple purposes in ELA. We read mentor texts several times so that the students can read them on their own as well. The best mentor texts are good books that students enjoy. Luckily there are tons of great books. #d100chat#KDMpershing
A1:#d100chat. Mentor text is ANY text that you or your Ss LOVE. A piece of literature that you can return to OVER and OVER again. For me, my first mentor text was during high school. No years or dates required!!!
A1- A mentor text is a text that supports student learning. It has specific examples that the students can learn from and use in their learning.
#d100chat#teampershing
Q1: A mentor text is a text that students are familiar with. You can use the mentor text to teach reading strategies, sentence structure, character development, and much more. It is a text that you can come back to for many reasons. #D100chat#D100inspires
A1: I would define a mentor text as a tool to reinforce a teaching point, and a text that all Ss have access to. There are too many qualities to fit in my tweet! #d100chat#d100inspires
A1: mentor texts are engaging enough to reread multiple times, but also can teach multiple skills (character traits, comprehension strategies, writing crafts, etc.) #d100chat#d100inspires
Hi D100 Peeps…this is a steal from Ralph Larsen regarding Mentor Texts…"I’d say anything that you can learn from - not by talking about but just looking at the actual writing itself, being used in really skillful, powerful way.” #D100chat#teampershing

A1: Texts that both teacher and student can reference or reread for many different purposes in reading and writing. Good mentor texts have quality examples of ideas/concepts for students to understand and practice at that grade level. #d100chat#d100inspires#teamPershing

I literally have been waiting for this chat for a year. Literally. We kept trying to schedule it for the 2017-18 year. But we are here now!!!! @MegReckley@ms_colletti#d100chat
Q1- I would define a mentor text as a tool for students to find writing techniques they appreciate and want to put to use - mentor texts are INTENTIONAL (: #d100chat

Q2 In kindergarten, we use mentor texts to teach retelling. We also use them to teach concepts of print. We use them to model writing: narrative, expository, and opinion. #d100chat#D100inspires#teampershing
A2: We use mentor texts to demonstrate reading strategies through classic picture books and high interest reads. Previously this quarter we are used mentor texts to practice #noticeandnote#signpost reading strategies. #d100chat
A2: Help Ss learn that texts are structured in different ways, so they will learn to try out different ways to structure their own texts
#d100chat#d100inspires#irvingpride
Q2: At the beginning of the year, @KinderPanthers used mentor texts to teach PBIS expectations initially. As the year goes on, I plan to use some of the same books for Dictado (sentence structure). #D100chat#d100inspires
Q2 I've used I Wanna Iguana to teach supporting persuasive arguments. It helped the students develop their rationale for their position. #KDMpershing#d100chat
A2- We use mentor texts in writing to study how an author creates powerful writing. We look at the craft moves an author uses like similes and metaphors then try to use that in our own writing.
#d100chat#teampershing
A2: In the past, I have used mentor text to introduce genres in writing. I have also used the class text to find certain words/grammar examples for reading & writing word study units #Komenskymatters#D100chat
A2: I use mentor texts to model strategies, emphasize author's craft, etc. But my FAVORITE skill to practice when using mentor texts in reading is to find the lesson/moral. #D100chat#d100inspires
Q2 - Picture books! Picture books! Picture books! Literary devices from class read alouds make for great class-community moments. "Water Dance" was a personal favorite this week in 5W - show not tell! #d100chat#d100inspires#tigerslearn
A1 A mentor text has to have skills/strategies that transfer to our readers and writers. It is different than a read aloud because it becomes woven through the instruction, not just read and enjoyed once. #d100chat
Q3 I like Peter's Chair by Ezra Jack Keats as a mentor text for retelling a narrative. The children relate to the story and can identify the beginning, middle, and end of the story. It is also good to use for writing a personal narrative. #d100chat#KDMpershing
A3:#d100chat Because Lightening Thief made one of my sons a reader I have to give it a shout-out!! I hope that the Tales of Despereaux will be used as a mentor text this year @KomenskyLions
Q3 One favorite mentor text in kindergarten is A Carrot Seed. We use it to teach sequential order, we also use it for vocabulary development, plus the kids love it
#d100chat#D100inspires#teampershing
A3: We just read two of my all time favorite stories by two of my favorite children's authors! The Giving Tree by Shel Silverstein and The Lorax by Dr. Seuss #d100chat#mentortexts
A3: Because of Winn-Dixie is by far my most favorite mentor text and one of my favorite things to read to my 3rd graders. It is something I am going to miss now that I'm out of the classroom and in a coaching role. #d100inspires#D100chat
A3- the list is long: How Rocket Learned to Read, Hooray for Reading Day, The Hundred Dresses, Rattletrap Car, most books by Kevin Henkes, Bad Case of Stripes, No David, etc. #teampershing#d100inspires#D100chat
RED KAYAK for read aloud novel! I use it daily for reading/writing instruction. SOOO many quality examples of good narrative writing as well as fiction sign posts, character building and theme. Not to mention students and I LOVE this book!!!! #D100chat#D100inspires#teamPershing

My kids grew out of their toy bins and into my picture books. Any of these books *could be a mentor text. I just need to know what I want to transfer, be intentional with my choice, and keep the joy in the use of the book. Mentor texts should model literacy love. #d100chat
A4:#d100chat. Shout out to our special teacher highlighted by our Parent Involvement Committee @MrsSievers3@KomenskyLions. She deserves all the praise and MORE!! #edujoy!
Q4 - This week we started a class novel - students are sketch noting each chapter. Boy oh boy! there is some serious talent in 5W - love seeing the ways that each S visualizes the same story! #d100chat#d100inspires#tigerslearn#edujoy
A4: SO to all the passionate educators who spend time on chats like these so our students have access to the very best instruction. They are fortunate that their teachers and administrators are so committed to their success. #d100inspires#d100chat
A4: Having fantastic teachers on my team who help with everything! Specifically today: MAP testing, SMARTboard help, planning lessons, and rolling out devices. Thanks to you all! #d100inspires#d100chat#teampershing

Thank you all for joining @MegReckley and I tonight! I have learned so much in these short 30 minutes! Please keep sharing as you use mentor texts in your classrooms! #d100chat
I teared up meeting the ones above. And, in fairness, I have not actually met Mo Willems yet. Do Piggie and Gerald count? Because I teared up meeting just them. #d100chat
