Q0: Welcome to #MinecraftEDU Chat! Please introduce yourself: Name, Role, Current Coordinates and what games do you find most fun in the classroom? #MinecraftEDU
Good Morning, Good Evening and Welcome to the #MinecraftEDU Chat all of you Miners, Crafters, and Creepers. Thank you for joining us on tonights Chat, "Keeping the Fun in #MinecrafEDU"
Mark G from Southern NJ. Former Elementary Teacher, Minecraft Global Mentor and Co-Founder of the #MinecraftEDU Chat. I love designing 2D Games as well as Mini-Games in Minecraft where students design book plots into maps IE: Escape Count Olaf's Manor.
A0: I'm Chris, a student teacher in a rural Pennsylvania HS English classroom. Games that I find the most fun in the classroom are digital games that allow for lots of exploration and problem solving #MinecraftEDU

Well, I would LOVE to use #MinecraftEDU, but that's not an option right now. The only game I've introduced so far was using manipulatives to build an MLA citation. The students enjoyed it, and the librarian asked me to make a set for her to use!
The thing I ❤️ about #minecraftedu is the open endedness of it (is that a word lol). I throw something out for the kids and the places they take it blow my mind.
A1 i think they are fun because they take a different approach to learning. Kids are free to experiment in a world that is comfortable for them. #MinecraftEDU
A1: I also think the relevance of the game is important. Games are more fun when you get to tell your friends about all the cool stuff you accomplished! #MinecraftEDU
We were reading The Wild Robot by @itspeterbrown In novel, robot talks about its "purpose." I challenged Ss to build a robot in #minecraftedu that served a purpose. Two of my girls worked & built a robot that washed windows.
A1 The ability to iterate is appealing to students. Build and break touches upon our deep rooted toddler tendencies. Experimentation and creativity are welcome. #MinecraftEDU
A2) I don't really plan for lessons in minecraft. I plan for a skill or concept, and then try to let students decide the best tool for them to use. #MinecraftEdu
The thing I'm always telling teachers is the one thing I love about #MinecraftEdu is how my Ss are way more resilient & willing to go back to the drawing board in MC versus a pencil/paper task.
A2: I start with the student learning goal & then decide how much freedom/independence I need to allow vs. how much support they may need. #MinecraftEDU
A2: I think you have to begin at the intersection of standards/objectives, what you know about your students, what you know about the tools/resources at your disposal, and what you know will be effective (or fun). #MinecraftEDU
A2 My starting point for planning a unit with #MinecraftEDU is the same for any #edtech tool. What are the outcomes for Ss? What demonstrates understanding? How will I know?
Most kids did something where step on pressure plates and it would dispense something. Had kids build robots that watered garden while you were away. These girls went above and beyond #minecraftedu

A2 I also make sure that I have enough supporting materials to scaffold the experience. Graphic organizers and QR code libraries have been very successful for us. #MinecraftEDU#edtech
A2 i always try to stay true to the game. This way it keeps the learning fun for students. Sometimes it takes a little extra work from me, but totally worth it #MinecraftEDU
These elements are game mechanics, and they are the basis of what makes games like Minecraft challenging. But I could go all theoretical and say Minecraft is New Media and is a text or even a genre in and of itself that has rules that can be explored :P #MinecraftEDU
Welcome to tonight's chat happy to have you! And that is amazing, also I wish it was summer here! About to have a snow storm where I am at! #MinecraftEdu
Has that worked well as you used it like that? And what is usually your next step after they decide? Is it like a 1 on 1 discussion or more of a class discussion? #MinecraftEdu
this year it was mostly for inquiry projects - we would learn some content, then students had time to explore a concept/idea in more depth. Had a great map of a wetland, as well as a cool water cycle - redstone in water makes steam for evaporation :) #MinecraftEdu
Next year I will be taking a digital technologies module, so will have a more specific focus with the coding aspect - Job for january before school starts back in feb #MinecraftEdu
It can go much deeper than that, I promise. I can always remind you that Minecraft is coded, which is technically another language. And code itself is a text. #MinecraftEDU
A3) I reckon I learned more about greek mythology playing a map in Heroes of might and magic than I did in 2 years of classics #minecraftEDU Sometimes, they are the same thing
A3 Great question! Playing is learning and learning is playing. For me, it is the intention and engagement with material that helps me determine the line when brains "turn off." Marrying #MinecraftEDU with screencast reflections helps us keep it in the ballpark.

A3 I start the year off explaining that while while #minecraftedu is awesome & fun, at school we are not "playing" it's another tool to help us showcase our learning.
A2 - When planning a lesson or project in Minecraft, always begin with the curriculum expectations to ensure educational value. Let Minecraft be an option for students to demonstrate their thinking #MinecraftEDU
A3: Why does there have to be a border? We need to make sure it’s not empty play. but the best #GBL makes the learning innate within the play #MinecraftEDU
The other thing is when we start a build, I remind them the end goal, what are they trying to build, what's the challenge, that's their focus. If they have fun at the same time, then it's win-win #minecraftedu
Yea it is always a good idea to tell them off the start! Also it helps them understand what you are doing more by taking the time to explain #MinecraftEdu
A1: The fundamental elements of games like Minecraft that make it fun to play, include: points, badges and leaderboards. Also, the ability to use one's imagination to create whatever one dreams up and/or to role play another character #MinecraftEDU
A4: Haven't had an opportunity to do this, but I do like the idea of it. There are schools that function on letting students "play." Then they meet with the teachers to see how their activities aligned to educational standards. @nikhilgoya_l#MinecraftEDU
A4: Sometime I insinuate to my students that they are just playing, but it is usually on a task where the learning is more hidden and I am measuring how they engage in it. #MinecraftEDU
A4 I usually give "free build" time to those who have finished their projects & others are still working. I ask them to find a corner of the world & have at 'er lol #minecraftedu
Like when we began with https://t.co/mtOxBEUhi6 and they thought they were playing Angry Birds or Minecraft but were actually learning computational thinking #MinecraftEDU
No, the students just do what they want. The teacher then takes all the things the students decided to do and connects the dots to the standards. The students actually look forward to their Fridays because of this. #MinecraftEDU#SchoolsOnTrial
A4: We “play” in my classroom by putting students in position of main character in a story. Sometimes that is hiding, sometimes it is fighting...all in digital world of @PlayCraftLearn#MinecraftEdu
You don't have to be sorry! Better late than never! What types of things do they usually try to build during their free time? Do they work together with others? #MinecraftEdu
Q5 - How do we measure a #MinecraftEdu lesson’s fun factor? How can we encourage Ss, Ts reflection to boost fun and engagement in future lessons? #MinecraftEDU
A4: Students get an hour to research 'passion projects' for Genius Hour. Many have chosen to explore coding and others have created in #MinecraftEdu. Students research an inquiry question and share their projects with global community #classroom15percenttime
Does them working like that tend to have an effect when they know they are learning? Like do they become more willing to make mistakes after seeing how it worked when they didn't know? #MinecraftEdu
A5: I measure often by volume...the louder the better! I have also found student writing to be stronger with lessons in @PlayCraftLearn that are more fun. Students want to reflect on positive experiences. #MinecraftEdu
Q5 - How do we measure a #MinecraftEdu lesson’s fun factor? How can we encourage Ss, Ts reflection to boost fun and engagement in future lessons? #MinecraftEDU
A5: We can measure #MinecraftEDU's fun factor by the stories we hear from parents and others when our students go tell them what they did in class that day :D
I'm compiling videos of Ts in 1:1 classrooms using #MinecraftEDU w ScreenBeam #ClassroomCommander. You can preview each students' Minecraft projects & show them on the classroom display https://t.co/8apX7TuJdv. Let me know if any Ts are interested in trying Classroom Commander.
A5: Reflection can be done through screen recordings and voice overs. Teachers can survey students, too. There are lots of other edtech tools that can be combined with #MinecraftEDU to show both the learning and the fun.
Haha that must get interesting with all the noise, but it is a great indicator that they are having fun indeed! And that is a good observation! #minecraftEdu
I’ve learned to model mistakes in front of students where I screw up on purpose and they help me fix it. Coding is great for learning that. They’ve become more open to experimenting. #MinecraftEDU
Yea! Most kids these days when they get home and are asked how school went they just say fine, but if they are excited to share that is a great way to know they enjoyed it! #MinecraftEdu
