Ohio Educational Library Media Association; We advocate for SLMS in Ohio and the impact they make in Ss lives
Hi Susan Yutzey here - looking forward to visiting school libraries seeing all the things slms do to transform learning
Sorry missed the Intro, Eric here from Beaver Local and co-author with of
We think librarians and media specialists can greatly benefit from telling their story.
Thanks for joining us! We appreciate when you post all of the cool things going on in Ohio school libraries!
Yes, advocacy is critical; many people misunderstand our training & potential, so imp to share successes https://t.co/ua8XOoCBwI

Hi Nancy Boone here, looking forward to implementing some maker activities and maybe genrefying
We’ll be getting started w Qs soon. I promise to finish promptly at 8; I’m addicted to the Olympics & watching the US win gold!
This is following a Question set-up. Questions listed as Q1, Q2, etc. Responses should be A1, A2, etc.
Remember to use in your Tweet, so it shows up in our stream.
Thanks for joining us! I genrefied last year and really liked the results; Improving makerspace on my list also
I started a Twitter account for my library this past year, but forgot to use often, b/c blocked at school.
I have a Twitter account for my library but don't often think to use it. Need to do better.
most powerful tool is use of video, in classrooms to offer feedback as well as informing & engaging school community
That's tough. We were fortunate that our admin at bldg and central office were supportive of using social media.
A1 Used a library blog on the school library homepage
Great way to highlight "Must Read" books. Tweet pic of cover.
Have you had students write book reviews or book recs on the blog?
love that idea! I also use Instagram and am trying to learn Snapchat
People respond to video, esp in current culture. How does your district handle permissions to film Ss? https://t.co/lualwxWrhM

You could do the same on all 3 platforms. Go where they are, don't force them to one platform.
Yes, I was actually inspired by book & something I saw another librarian do; Use Instagram/Twitter 4 that https://t.co/WD3frt3M4p
Great way to highlight "Must Read" books. Tweet pic of cover.
We have opt-in or opt-out. Every kid turns in a form. Opt-outs are almost non-existent.
Yes, Snapchat is where my Ss are; What are some ways you see this being used for school/library purposes? https://t.co/5psZrkluyO
love that idea! I also use Instagram and am trying to learn Snapchat
Well is actually using SnapChat in his district. I'll let him answer.
Great stuff; We have kind of started in the direction of Q2, which is coming up...
my Ss too but I haven't figure out how to tap the potential there!
Starting to use Snapchat at events with filters, and highlighting students on that platform because students evolved to there
You could use SnapChat to highlight media, or a creative literary contest & showcase the best examples of the day#yourschoolrocks
A2 Altho not in a school I've started creating a video with to showcase futurelibrarian
building on & improving Video Newsletters, using SnapChat, having Takeover Tuesdays on platforms, & showcasing food options
My goal is start an Instagram, linked to the library Twitter and start by sharing out pics of new bks, events, etc.
I like Instagram because it is quick and easy. New update has a My Story feature which is very similar to Snapchat.
Oops I mean
https://t.co/87MaR2ii74
Also, thinking about doing some video newsletters, even just for staff, b/c limited Ss permissions, but imp for Ts to know, too
A2. Do we have to have different content for each app? Is it ok to post same thing on multiple sites?
Takeover Tuesday? Explain more... https://t.co/ciXFTWKCn2

Students will show a day in their life of learning at school via a social media outlet, they will have control of what is seen
I love for creating, managing and scheduling on multiple accounts.
It is ok to post same on multiple platforms because not everyone is on every platform. Hit them where they are.
I don't know if it's ideal, but I have my Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram all linked to repost to each other
Takeover Tuesday. Love it! https://t.co/8hkXWEPyS0

Personally, I say the more outlets the better; Diff stakeholdes, esp in diff generations, diff places https://t.co/4kGLcPSd9c
A2. Do we have to have different content for each app? Is it ok to post same thing on multiple sites?
I agree! I'm using it right now to be able to chat as and myself :)
Curious if there is an issue with S privacy if we're taking pix/video on personal cell phones? Depend on district?
So I'll be honest, I'm not a fan of that because I don't like how it shows up on each. But I'll post separately.
yes look at the decline in FB among Ss yet Snapchat is going strong
Good question. Check with your decision makers. We use district accounts.
Facebook is still a growing demographic with adults.
Millennials seem to have gone to Instagram or posting on multiple sites.
good tool for reaching parents/families and community
Q3: any ways you are using social media to market your school/library that weren’t mentioned in the book that you’re proud of?
Sorry, Q3 pic not cued up as I hoped!
Interesting survey last summer. Teens, if you could only pick 1 SM platform, what is it? Surprisingly it was Facebook.
Wow! Suprising! https://t.co/CZVVoJzqDb

Is anyone in k-6 intentionally trying to teach parents with social media?
YES. We allow comments. Rule of thumb is keep posts positive and comments will be as well.
permissions fall under our opt-in opt-out policy.
when deciding if worth the time remember the power of the moment people wake up & 1st thing they do https://t.co/eYup1s1rML
yes we must teach in our Ss world if we are to reach them. Not in 20th cent that happens in some schools.
I think that's a good question - you mean as a part of digital citizenship?
and the second thing I do when I swipe down to refresh 10 seconds later.
Great idea - have your Ss create a mission statement for the media ctr - post on social media https://t.co/CybcARy5IN
Agree! If our policies and procedures (and instruction) don't catch up, it's like ostrich/sand. https://t.co/nXofdGZTwJ

not just but in our everyday teaching and us using tech. 4cs of 21st cent Ed.
Before I lose track of time, Q4 coming up...
We use it to provide parents with resources that will help them with their kids.
I work with grades 5-8 & recently moved into the Superintendent position. I look forward to expanding these items this year
If it becomes part of fabric of school, the skills will be modeled and embraced https://t.co/3qxIzIHMAv

A4 biggest problems equitable access for Ss and outdated tech policies designed to "protect Ss"
Agree: policies are very slow to change https://t.co/bWmIQ9hg6e
A4 biggest problems equitable access for Ss and outdated tech policies designed to "protect Ss"
schools continuing to use filtering software with no input from Ts and why sites need to be accessible. A4
A4: Relates to policy, but when the tools are blocked at school, hard for us to remember to follow through and be consisten using
We’re going to wrap up tonight’s with a quick Q&A with the authors and . What Qs do you have for them?
How can we persuade our tech depts?
Must trust staff & students, consistently modeling proper use, fabric of our culture & daily lives https://t.co/fpydS9ov4J
Agree; It doesn't prevent use, just makes it tougher to model responsible use https://t.co/sTGT7z7ijA
schools continuing to use filtering software with no input from Ts and why sites need to be accessible. A4
Our Ss live in virtual world very comfortably. Let's not teach them from position of fear but give them tools to be powerful.
ask them to look around at how we have changed consumption in our lives over past several years, schools should match
You need to persuade your principals and central admin. They are the ultimate gatekeepers.
As admins yourself, what is biggest argument you think might convince these leaders? https://t.co/opHUuzNYjA
You need to persuade your principals and central admin. They are the ultimate gatekeepers.
The positive relationship that it helps create with families. I truly feel we are working together now.
Thank you everyone for joining tonight. Be sure to join us in 2 weeks on 8/25 for some back to school promo ideas!
