  • NolaraeCronan Feb 23 @ 9:12 PM EST

    In reply to @lblanken

    In reply to @NolaraeCronan, @AEspanola96, @lcarroll94
  • lblanken Feb 23 @ 9:16 PM EST
I still think this is something we have to work on. It's not automatic in single sex ed. #isedchat
    In reply to @NolaraeCronan, @AEspanola96, @lcarroll94
  • Learn21Tech Feb 23 @ 9:16 PM EST
I like the idea of girl-only activities in our co-ed school; doing this with a negotiation program, for example. #isedchat
  • ElemSciTchr Feb 23 @ 9:16 PM EST
It's such a powerful thing to explain instruction when framed as "we know from research this is how girls learn best." #isedchat
    In reply to @lblanken
  • bivey Feb 23 @ 9:16 PM EST
Me too. And I think the kids see it as well. Some say it's in part because everyone is on board with that ideal. #isedchat

Q2. If there are benifits, what might be some challenges of single gender education? #isedchat
  • lcarroll94 - Moderator Feb 23 @ 9:17 PM EST
I agree with @lblanken. It's still something that we need to be deliberate about. #isedchat
    In reply to @NolaraeCronan, @AEspanola96, @lblanken

  • lcarroll94 - Moderator Feb 23 @ 9:18 PM EST
I saw a difference when I taught math in single ed vs. co-ed. #isedchat
    In reply to @Learn21Tech, @NolaraeCronan, @AEspanola96
  • lblanken Feb 23 @ 9:19 PM EST
A2 There are arguments about whether separating is good, whether girls "can handle" coed afterward. Probably sim. for boys #isedchat
  • sarahhanawald Feb 23 @ 9:19 PM EST
I hate to equivocate, but I think it depends on the student. #isedchat
    In reply to @NolaraeCronan
  • Learn21Tech Feb 23 @ 9:19 PM EST
Interesting idea... however, our advisory is moving to a 120 block every day next year so that may be hard. #isedchat
    In reply to @bivey
  • ElemSciTchr Feb 23 @ 9:19 PM EST
A2: I've heard our girls make stereotypical statements about boys. Have to be careful that all girl doesn't turn into anti-boy. #isedchat
  • juliediana Feb 23 @ 9:19 PM EST
A1. working in all girls school, I see a sense of playfulness that can be liberating socially and intellectually. #isedchat
  • NolaraeCronan Feb 23 @ 9:19 PM EST
What were some of the differences you saw in teaching math single vs. coed? @lcarroll94 #isedchat
    In reply to @lcarroll94
  • AEspanola96 Feb 23 @ 9:19 PM EST
I think this is really important, in co-ed, girls dont speak out as much #isedchat
    In reply to @NolaraeCronan

  • ConsultJodi Feb 23 @ 9:20 PM EST
Single-schools can have strong leaders who advocate for career, before children and marriage. #isedchat
  • AEspanola96 Feb 23 @ 9:20 PM EST
They do, sometimes, but from different schools obviously. People make connections and make friends. Just not in the classroom #isedchat
  • skeeTX Feb 23 @ 9:20 PM EST
many single sex schools gave many functions w/ sister/brother schools #isedchat
    In reply to @NolaraeCronan
  • NolaraeCronan Feb 23 @ 9:21 PM EST
That seems so small, but is a real concern for so many @lblanken #isedchat

  • lcarroll94 - Moderator Feb 23 @ 9:23 PM EST
Two different states so that could have contributed to the difference. NY (all girls) vs. CT. (co ed) #isedchat

My 8th grade son at all boys school and he's learning to navigate socially w/ girls. Good experience to see as a P #isedchat
  • lblanken Feb 23 @ 9:23 PM EST
A2 The research is not definitive (like much ed research) about benefits of single-sex and it differs depending on boys or girls. #isedchat
  • bivey Feb 23 @ 9:23 PM EST
Hey #isedchat - stepping out for a second. My wife is on the phone! :-)
  • NolaraeCronan Feb 23 @ 9:23 PM EST
    Question 3 is coming up…. #isedchat
  • Learn21Tech Feb 23 @ 9:24 PM EST
I think single-gender schools need to work to be intentional around this #isedchat
    In reply to @skeeTX
  • AEspanola96 Feb 23 @ 9:24 PM EST
A2 I think socialization is an issue if you don't get that exposure outside of school. You work with mixed genders IRL #isedchat
  • ElemSciTchr Feb 23 @ 9:24 PM EST
Jumping back to A1: I also see a prolonged childhood in our girls. Most not as in a hurry to "grow up" as when boys in class. #isedchat
  • lblanken Feb 23 @ 9:25 PM EST
And now, as a senior, she could care less about dating. She's focused on her future :) #isedchat
    In reply to @NolaraeCronan
  • skeeTX Feb 23 @ 9:25 PM EST
his does encourage interaction w/ girls. Multi school dances, and they'll host freshman mixer next year. #isedchat
    In reply to @Learn21Tech
  • NolaraeCronan Feb 23 @ 9:25 PM EST
As so many students do with religious studies, volunteering, working and plain old life. @AEspanola96 #isedchat
    In reply to @AEspanola96
  • sarahhanawald Feb 23 @ 9:26 PM EST
I know all-girls schools can be deliberately counter culture in terms of societal stereotypes & early sexualization. #isedchat
    In reply to @Learn21Tech
  • lblanken Feb 23 @ 9:26 PM EST
Yep, we try to work on that through social events and academic/service experiences #isedchat
    In reply to @Learn21Tech, @skeeTX
  • NolaraeCronan Feb 23 @ 9:26 PM EST
Q4. How do you develop/build curricula and community in single gender ed that doesn't reinforce stereotypes? #isedchat
  • AEspanola96 Feb 23 @ 9:27 PM EST
I think if you have the opportunities for that then you would turn out fine and have no problems #isedchat
    In reply to @NolaraeCronan
  • NolaraeCronan Feb 23 @ 9:27 PM EST
    I meant Q3 :-) #isedchat
  • lblanken Feb 23 @ 9:27 PM EST
This is an area that research supports: girls in single sex environments hold less stereotypical views #isedchat
    In reply to @sarahhanawald, @Learn21Tech
  • Learn21Tech Feb 23 @ 9:29 PM EST
more girls in my single-gender school would openly claim they are feminists + activists- very interesting #isedchat
    In reply to @lblanken, @sarahhanawald
  • lblanken Feb 23 @ 9:29 PM EST
A3 Developing curriculum that avoids stereotypes is easier than dealing with community traditions, etc. #isedchat
  • lcarroll94 - Moderator Feb 23 @ 9:29 PM EST
A4. Good question! I'm not sure that my HS experience did not reinforce stereotypes in some ways. #isedchat
    In reply to @NolaraeCronan
  • AEspanola96 Feb 23 @ 9:30 PM EST
A3: I feel if you dont talk about the stereotype you are less likely to reinforce it but stereotypes are hard to avoid #isedchat
  • sarahhanawald Feb 23 @ 9:31 PM EST
    I think networking is invaluable. Just went to @girlsschools & @NYSAIS symposium & saw powerful collaboration/ideas #isedchat
    In reply to @NolaraeCronan, @girlsschools, @NYSAIS
  • skeeTX Feb 23 @ 9:31 PM EST
A4: by encouraging Ss to research alternative perspectives, debating, bringing in speakers to offer another view #isedchat
  • NolaraeCronan Feb 23 @ 9:31 PM EST
Traditions are hard... like white dresses at graduation. Most all-girls I know have that expectation, including mine @lblanken #isedchat
    In reply to @lblanken
  • lblanken Feb 23 @ 9:32 PM EST
A3 I feel like I've always tried to avoid stereotypes in my classes, even in co-ed environments. Not diff from ss environment #isedchat
  • NolaraeCronan Feb 23 @ 9:32 PM EST
A3. The @GurianInstitute is a great resource for building successful curricula for singer gender ed. #isedchat
    In reply to @GurianInstitute
  • AEspanola96 Feb 23 @ 9:32 PM EST
we had a transgender student in my HS graduation so we all ended up wearing yellow gowns #isedchat
    In reply to @NolaraeCronan, @lblanken
  • ElemSciTchr Feb 23 @ 9:32 PM EST
A3: Multilayered process: have to consider resources, activities, expectations, pedagogy. Implicit and explicit curriculum. #isedchat
  • lblanken Feb 23 @ 9:33 PM EST
Yep. There's some grumbling sometimes in the moment, but they manage to rationalize it--and get nostalgic #isedchat
    In reply to @NolaraeCronan
  • skeeTX Feb 23 @ 9:33 PM EST
Traditions shouldn't be just because it's what has always been done. #isedchat
    In reply to @NolaraeCronan, @lblanken
  • ElemSciTchr Feb 23 @ 9:34 PM EST
Agreed. I think traditions might be hardest part! Both in activities and traditional course activities. #isedchat
    In reply to @NolaraeCronan, @lblanken
  • NolaraeCronan Feb 23 @ 9:34 PM EST
I agree, but they can be challenging to overturn. Just this year we are allowing pants. It's a huge deal. @skeeTX @lblanken #isedchat
    In reply to @skeeTX, @lblanken
  • NolaraeCronan Feb 23 @ 9:35 PM EST
    Question 4 is coming up…. #isedchat
  • NolaraeCronan Feb 23 @ 9:36 PM EST
Q4. Role modeling leadership; should faculty and administrators be of the same gender as the students? Why/why not? #isedchat
  • skeeTX Feb 23 @ 9:36 PM EST
I know, it can be an uphill battle. I struggle with need for uniforms. Are Ss comfortable to learn? #isedchat
    In reply to @NolaraeCronan, @lblanken
  • lblanken Feb 23 @ 9:38 PM EST
A4 I think you need a mix. But I think certain roles need to be the same gender, i.e. head of school #isedchat
  • skeeTX Feb 23 @ 9:38 PM EST
A4: a good T is a good T regardless of gender. BUT, some Ss have difficulty with not same gender. Have seen it w/ boys & girls #isedchat
  • NolaraeCronan Feb 23 @ 9:38 PM EST
A4. I believe value in both. I want my students to see women in powerful positions AND see men who care about their success #isedchat
  • lblanken Feb 23 @ 9:38 PM EST
Yep--big struggle--understand the reasoning, but maybe there are variations. #isedchat
    In reply to @skeeTX, @NolaraeCronan
  • ElemSciTchr Feb 23 @ 9:39 PM EST
A4: Some mixed feelings on this. On one hand, YES. Powerful statement. On other hand, can feel unbalanced and exclusionary. #isedchat
  • AEspanola96 Feb 23 @ 9:39 PM EST
People of high positions would be better as same gender, but always provide a mix of genders to provide diff perspectives #isedchat
  • sarahhanawald Feb 23 @ 9:39 PM EST
A great question. Role modeling is so important. @rhawk & I just researched the number of women in tech in #isedchat schools
    In reply to @NolaraeCronan, @rhawk
  • lblanken Feb 23 @ 9:40 PM EST
A4 We have some fantastic male teachers. They really believe in girls education, and I think that's what counts. #isedchat
  • NolaraeCronan Feb 23 @ 9:40 PM EST
It's the exclusionary aspect that worries me at times. And what message does that send to our students @ElemSciTchr #isedchat
    In reply to @ElemSciTchr
  • ElemSciTchr Feb 23 @ 9:41 PM EST
A4 (part 2): On the other hand, I feel very strongly that women's teams at all levels should be coached by women. Not consistent. #isedchat
  • NolaraeCronan Feb 23 @ 9:41 PM EST
Is there a link we could explore? @sarahhanawald @rhawk #isedchat
    In reply to @sarahhanawald, @rhawk
  • lblanken Feb 23 @ 9:41 PM EST
I'm in tech/CS. That's an area where i think having women is important. Sends a message #isedchat
    In reply to @sarahhanawald, @NolaraeCronan, @rhawk
  • NolaraeCronan Feb 23 @ 9:42 PM EST
And isn't it important for girls to see men who care about them & their success? Especially men saying "use your voice" @lblanken #isedchat
    In reply to @lblanken
  • ElemSciTchr Feb 23 @ 9:42 PM EST
I'm also cognizant that certain departments at our school become more male dominated in US. That worries me, too. #isedchat

    In reply to @ElemSciTchr
  • bivey Feb 23 @ 9:42 PM EST

    In reply to @NolaraeCronan, @lblanken
  • ElemSciTchr Feb 23 @ 9:43 PM EST
Yep. I'm an ND grad and huge Muffet McGraw fan! #isedchat
    In reply to @skeeTX
  • lblanken Feb 23 @ 9:44 PM EST
Agreed, and for men to support women's leadership--in students, in colleagues--really powerful for girls to see. #isedchat
    In reply to @NolaraeCronan
  • NolaraeCronan Feb 23 @ 9:44 PM EST
    Question 5 is coming up…. #isedchat
  • bivey Feb 23 @ 9:44 PM EST
A4 Hangar Hall is entirely female and it works well for them. But I think it depends on what you're trying to model and why. #isedchat
  • ConsultJodi Feb 23 @ 9:45 PM EST
Part of that is the recession and AI. Education is safer than real estate/banking. #isedchat

Q5. How can/do single gender schools react/support gender nonconforming students? #isedchat
  • bivey Feb 23 @ 9:47 PM EST
A4 My school looks for gender balance but if there's to be over-representation, we'd skew female. Currently 3+ genders on staff. #isedchat
  • NolaraeCronan Feb 23 @ 9:48 PM EST
A5. How do single gender schools support gender nonconforming students? First remember they are children, then meet their needs. #isedchat
  • bivey Feb 23 @ 9:48 PM EST
A5 I think ideally we're supporting a range of gender expressions anyway; gender identities can then become a natural next step. #isedchat
  • lblanken Feb 23 @ 9:49 PM EST
A5 This is one we're still working on. We have a generally supportive environment, so I'm hopeful. #isedchat
  • NolaraeCronan Feb 23 @ 9:49 PM EST
In what ways does your school support a range of gender expressions? @bivey #isedchat
    In reply to @bivey
  • sarahhanawald Feb 23 @ 9:49 PM EST
    I agree--natural extension of letting each student self-define #isedchat
    In reply to @bivey
  • lblanken Feb 23 @ 9:50 PM EST
We just haven't had to confront this issue directly yet. #isedchat
  • bivey Feb 23 @ 9:50 PM EST
I think the focus on "student voice" and "authentic self" helps. And when my seventh graders designed a unit on... #isedchat
    In reply to @NolaraeCronan
  • NolaraeCronan Feb 23 @ 9:51 PM EST
I get the sense that many single gender schools are working on this. Hopeful is a great place to start :-) @lblanken #isedchat
    In reply to @lblanken
  • bivey Feb 23 @ 9:51 PM EST

A5: Not much experience to share here, but I think student education is just as important as policies and faculty training. #isedchat

A5. I think it's a bit difficult bc of gender expectations but it's something i think everyone is working on. SUPPORT! #isedchat

We had trans boys in the classes of 2011 and 2016. Several kids out as non-binary now, plus grads. #isedchat

Q6. Every so often an article will surface saying single gender ed is too old school. How to we fight that? #isedchat
  • NolaraeCronan Feb 23 @ 9:57 PM EST

  • bivey Feb 23 @ 9:59 PM EST
