Our chat will focus on the idea that we can lead and make positive change from any position in our school systems. Leadership is not about a title, it is a way of thinking and acting.
Good morning #LeadLAP friend and my good friend @BethHouf It's always good to learn from you all on Saturday mornings! Jay from NJ checking out the amazing stuff from my #PLN
Good morning! My name is Mariah; I’m a proud middle school principal in Pennsylvania! Ready to learn together this morning and get ready for #BacktoSchool! #LeadLAP@BethHouf@burgess_shelley
Gooooooood Morning!!! Kelley Branch from Cape Girardeau, MO. STREAM Specialist at #BestJeffersonEver Just finished the most amazing 1st week ever @capejefftigers#leadlap
Good morning #leadlap ! Mike, newly named Principal of Brooksville Elementary in Florida. My first official day is Monday and I’m ready to roll with my new crew of teachers and students Pirate Style!!!!
Hey #LeadLAP group!! Excited to be here! Back to school week is in high gear and begins Monday! I’m Scott from Michigan. Middle school dean! Looking forward to this chat! #LeadLAP
A1: I'm more of a doer than a lecturer when I do PD. I love to get things started with what we are going to do. Such as my #appdice. Go over how to create and use them and then we start creating. #LeadLAP#tlap
A1: I'm not going to add a picture - because its a bit of a secret! With a new admin team this year - we just started planning something unique! Surprise the staff! #hopetheylikeit#theyfollowme#LeadLAP
A1: All fun stuff for our staff on our Staff Meeting Agenda! Trying to model some #1st3Days Activities that they can use with their kids! Super excited to do our school-wide Rock Paper Scissors Tournament by kicking it off with staff! #LeadLAP
A1: So excited to start implementing #DBC50Summer & continuing to build culture through a quick questionnaire which will be used for awesome with our Ss (It's a secret, lol...more info coming after Labor Day!) #LeadLAP
A1: I actually had some inspiration this week from you @BethHouf as well as @PrincipalFrench but don’t want to ruin the surprise so I’ll have to share our pictures later this week #LeadLAP
A1: I also like Ed Camp style. This allows for choice and lots of voice. Meets people where they are at and you can see what priorities they may have for the year! #LeadLAP
A1 Provide same type of PD to staff that you want teachers to do for kids - engaging, collaborative and empowering. We did staff scavenging hunt with staff -Awesome #LeadLAP
A1 this year we had an Edcamp to kick off our PD during our back to school days. Teachers had the opportunity to make their own choices on what they wanted to learn. We also flipped our mandatory training this year to give Ts more time to work on their own #LeadLAP
A1: Let's start with the environment. One of our PD's was done in the cafeteria and let's just say backaches were rampant. It's not good to sit on those little stools for an extended period of time! #leadlap
So excited that one new admin is already a #LeadLAP and another one got on board with two more ready to join! I am optimistic and hopeful for this coming year!
A1: Make it personalized based on the needs of each educator. Help them identify their focus area for the year and support their passions and growth opportunities. #LeadLAP
A1 - bring the engagement and excitement... we're starting with tam building, T led tech intros, making signs to run through 1st day assembly etc. Last year we used @GooseChase so much fun! #LeadLAP
A1: We did a lot of collaborative work focused around needs of the Ts. They gave feedback and we created PD around what their concerns were. We took our Ts out of the building and had multiple days elsewhere to allow them to relax. #LeadLAP
A1: Let's plunk them down in hard back chairs and do the 3 P's pummel with ppt and pray it applies to what Ts do. Not. How about on-going support thru implementation #leadLAP
A1: Coming in as a new tech coach in a district. First I need to get to know the Ts I will be working with and then determine what PD they need to help them grow. I want to me it what they need and can actually use. #LeadLAP
A1: PD should be dripping with the energy and excitement we want our kids to feel each day! It should also insanely instill the power of humans and the freedom of expression for new learning. #leadlap
A1 My new school did hyperdocs for a few must reads with built in activities. I loved the use of cooperative learning activities with Kagan strategies. We were also given time to read the handbook and give suggestions. Being valued! #leadlap
A1: Opportunities to engage and collaborate. Time for reflection and goal setting. Individual and collective growth focus. Mixed with a lot of fun and laughter in between. #leadlap
A1: I focus on the schedule - balance time learning with time in rooms and building staff culture! We ended our week with a pot luck lunch and making a welcome back video for kids! #LeadLAP
A1: First of all remind them that they are responsible for their professional learning but I will model, share, and not waste their time. I want each find their passions and make each day better for our kids #LeadLAP
Good morning to the #LeadLAP crew. Pooping in to say hello! So sorry I can't stay for very long... heading out on a weekend trip with my daughter @burgessashlyn1
A1: Make it fun! Back to school is the first chance you have to set the tone for the year. #culturematters#leadlap Just make sure, if you do it in person, it couldn't be done virtually by email. T's don't have enough time in their classrooms.
A1 We have to model what we want for teachers in their classrooms. Less “talk at” more hands on. Get them up out of their sets and add in a little fun. Have others lead. Vary the voices .#LeadLAP
A1 What you open up with is an indicator of what you value. How about redesigning back to school for adults with a focus on their unique strengths and wellbeing? Creating a great place for adults is a condition for having a great place for students. #leadlap
A1: we met in our new outdoor learning area (have tables too). Started with a mindfulness exercise followed by connecting to our passion, establishing a reflection routine and discussions on how we can use each practice with our classrooms. #LeadLAP
A1: start with a morning meeting! This is one our instructional facilitator @eisenhowerkris did with @CentralCabotpK4 staff on the first day back. She modeled interaction of social studies, along with gathering information for our personalized adult learning plan.
#leadlap
A2: I shared this before but 2 years ago staff came back and we put together a music video! 100% participation and what a great year! https://t.co/gAmW04Jvwe. #LeadLAP
a1 First meeting: I had to rethink my plans as a PLC leader on the spot. I wanted to work on team skills but clearly the mood was to just do what we have to do. Shift will have to be more gradual, but I am seeing the shift. #leadlap
We have been creative with time. There are 50 approved teacher led workshops! If people do 6 hours of PD after hours, they don’t have to work on 4/12/19 Conference Day. I am also hoping that they will do a Learning Walk to see what they learned in action. #empowerthem#LeadLAP
A1: a) I love the option of choice for PD! We talk about #StudentChoice—adults want it too! It makes PD for our staff more meaningful & relevant! b) Hopefully, we are trying to put practical & easy strategies in the hands of our teachers so they can use them ASAP! #LeadLAP
A1: We are working as a team to #Culturize at #PantherPride We did Beth’s Selfie Scavenger Hunt and shared the pictures on our school Facebook page. Great way to build bonds and connect with the community. #leadlap
A1: We took the Scavenger Hunt idea from @BethHouf & traveled around town completely tasks w/ our houses! It was a great 1st day activity for staff and helped with relationship building! Also, it gave us an opportunity to give back to our business partners! So much fun! #LeadLAP
Love this!!! I told my new admin partner - the less I can talk during PL the better! The more our staff takes on the leadership role the better!! #LeadLAP
A1: Have a panel of students put together PD training on what they loved from last school year. Have them tag teachers to speak about what they did. This would celebrate the awesome stuff in the building and allow students to be part of the PD equation. ❤️ #LeadLAP
My new principal had every person introduce themselves & and share 2 things that others may not know about us. As a newbie I loved it! Got to know colleagues day 1. #LeadLAP
In reply to
@BethHouf, @burgess_shelley, @teripendley
A1: I believe staff PD should start much like the first day of school...
Relationships first... Always!
Even if there are not many staff members! Build that bond!
#LeadLAP
A1: Instead of the normal school procedures meeting that takes forever we planned a staff scavenger hunt using @GooseChaseEDU
Threw in some fun missions along with missions to learn procedures. Teachers had a blast! #LeadLAP
Back to school PD started with Carpool Karaoke, involved a watermelon themed breakout, had an obstacle course to get past road blocks, had some wheel spinning, was full of collaboration, and most importantly was the kind of fun we want Ts to provide Ss in the classroom. #LeadLAP
A1: I have all kinds of fun plans for our opening meetings and then let them loose to share and learn. I want them to open their doors and learn from each other and share their PLN learning with all #LeadLAP
A1 used Kagan strategies to help folks learn each other and to break up the must dos we needed to cover also used a video showcasing the enthusiasm of Meet the teacher which was sprinkled into the BTS days #leadlap
A1: Along with my zone colleagues, we are putting together a PD Day “Lights, Camera, Adventure!” We are putting the finishing touches on our Vogue intro video...#leadlap
A1: tried something new this year. Did a 10 min podcast for staff to outline goals to hopefully save Ts some time in our first two Ts days. Surprise for this year’s start, but started with trivia last year. Went great! #leadLAP

A1. Our back to school training for teachers this year is EPIC! Designed a @breakoutEDU where we learn all about growth mindset to save the faculty coffee supply! Then it’s a #QRBreakIN REVERSE escape room to model 8 hands-on pedagogies followed by Mr. Potato Head PDSA. #LeadLAP
Just as first day back for students shouldn't be a droning of rules and what not to do .... same for teachers. Do something that will make teachers excited to come back tomorrow #leadlap
Morning #leadLap! Nili Bartley from MA-In and out but trying!:) A1) That first PD experience (and beyond) should provide opportunities for joy-This is my favorite pic ever because it captures the joy of Ts teaching:)
A1: We are working as a team to #Culturize at #PantherPride We did Beth’s Selfie Scavenger Hunt and shared the pictures on our school Facebook page. Great way to build bonds and connect with the community. #leadlap
A2: I sent out a @Flipgrid for our new staff to introduce themselves to the rest of the staff. I happen to be new at this building so I started it. #LeadLAP
A2) As a staff we bonded and connected to students by delivering tickets to our students inviting them to the first day back on Wed! It was amazing! #LeadLAP
A1 Hi #leadLAP! Tika, teacher leader, from Las Vegas, NV jumping in late. I ❤️differentiated PD for our new to the District and new to career PD. We want to give our teachers what they need not waste their time.
A1: Got to have that hook or theme! Our Admin did an amazing job on our PD jump start...Harry Potter themed everything (sorting hats for our groups, room transformation, goodies). They planned for everything to match! #Leadlap#ABQSchools#LoveMySchool
A2: I think most staff know we are already in the building. Our office doors are open and we invite them in to visit & tell us about their summers! Connecting w/ new staff for them to come in early to get set up and ask questions too! #LeadLAP
A2: I have shared this before but we just did Popsicles in the Park and had a great turn out by staff, students, and parents! #CultureFirst#LeadwithCulture#LeadLAP
I am in the process of collecting pictures from faculty about the wellness or vacation activities. Putting it together for faculty to see where colleagues relaxed and might have in common. #LeadLAP
A1 Definitely working on team building this year. Building relationships so trust is restored should allow for more meaningful and impactful collaborations. #LeadLAP
A2: We have an optional breakfast at a local restaurant! Great to bring new staff into a casual get-together before we all officially report back...food is key to relationship building! #LeadLAP
A1 - We should begin in a way that makes teachers want to run into school in the same way we want students to. So why not start with a New School Year celebration! #LeadLAP
A2 I wrote personal postcards to each staff and mailed it to them to show how we value them; personally met with new families this summer and met with struggling students this summer to let know we care #LeadLAP
A2: We hold summer success meeting with all our new students that may have had some challenges at past schools. We reinforce a fresh start and identify supports we can provide. #leadlap
A1: This year I want to deliver PD in a way that supports Ts, doesn't waste time, and makes people laugh and feel totally accomplished when complete. #LeadLAP
I try to keep I. Touch with our staff through email and text through the summer in the past when I was still in the classroom I used to send letters or emails to students and parents before school starts #LeadLAP
A2: We met with every member of our staff this summer coming in as a new administration. We asked about personal celebrations from the previous year, things we should know coming in new, what gives them energy and what takes it away. Great way to pregame. #LeadLAP
Q2 A fun Pre-game activity could involve texting gifs, selfies, pics, challenge, etc with staff in a huge group chat. Hard to be “cold” with others if you’re texting each other, in my opinion. Those without social media probably have a cell phone. #LeadLAP
A2: We've been sending funny videos most all summer, but this was the grand finale! In My Back 2 School Feelings with the hilarious @EricaJHogan#LeadLAPhttps://t.co/b0Y60I4pz4
a2 Many parents are unaware of the long-term consequences of poor homework habits & cramming. I host a family meeting to show parents how they can make a huge difference even if they don't understand the content. #leadlap
A2: Also, I have been doing read alouds for our students so they can share the love of reading and get to know me. We've had 2 Art nights on the playground led by @Art_Rm_Skorupa and 2 Kindy play nights to get them comfy #LeadLAP
A1: we met in our new outdoor learning area (have tables too). Started with a mindfulness exercise followed by connecting to our passion, establishing a reflection routine and discussions on how we can use each practice with our classrooms. #LeadLAP
A2: We spent so much time together making our spaces come alive! We also ate lunch togther--like 40 of us by choice on the 1st day back 🙌🙌🙌🙌 & we reworked out schedule so that teachers have a 40 minute lunch with their teammates EVERY SINGLE DAY. ❤#leadlap
We had to visit different business partners to present Thank You banners & had to complete acts of kindness within the town. We documented tasks w/ photos that we tweeted & used periscope.
A1: Our new superintendent built in a ton of time to reflect and get to know each other. Often times we table the most important stuff (relationships) for the "work". This made for an excellent first week back for admin. #LeadLAP
A2- Teachers send postcards to every student who will be in their class. The kids look forward to their postcards every year to find out who their teacher is! #leadlap
We are doing this too! As an added bonus, we are using @Flipgrid to introduce teachers to students! Postcards from each teacher will have a QR code to a Flipgrid with classroom tours! #LeadLAP
A2: I sent out a @Flipgrid for our new staff to introduce themselves to the rest of the staff. I happen to be new at this building so I started it. #LeadLAP
A2: Celebrate people just because! Cohesive teams, those who have worked so hard on setting up their environment, and leaving notes the night before the first day of school.
#leadlap
A2 - This year I asked everyone to send a picture of new babies, weddings, what the enjoyed about the summer. This will be a part of our opening celebration! 😜#LeadLAP
A2 I think meeting with staff over summer can be huge. Take them out to lunch or coffee, small groups or individuals. Talk to them and hear what they have to say. #leadlap
A2: our theme is Game On this year. One of our stops at our staff retreat was at the bowling alley where we gave our staff some quarters to get their game on! #leadLAP these two are a new team this year! @LaraBrunk@HyatesWagner
A2 I would like to have staff family get togethers, taking a staff is ride around our school neighborhood to get to know where our Ss live, & having a BBQ at our Boys &Girls Clubor church to build relationships with our community.
#LeadLAP

A2: Our amazing 6th grade math team offered #MathTime & a #STEM night to all our incoming 6th graders during our first @CCMS_PSP meeting! 6th graders had the chance to meet our math team & spend time in the building with new classmates 10 days before school! #LeadLAP
A1: Deliberately building in time for T to T interactions to support relationship building; use of activities to teach material so Ts can take the activities back and use in them in their classrooms
Our goal is to make the learning meaningful and useable and to inspire. #leadlap
A1:Be kind, let us come together as a team, share our joys, ideas for the year & maybe a simple meal, incld student leaders, & music. For the love of God! Don’t make us sit & listen to rules & regulations behind desks or in the aud. 😝 #LeadLAP hmmm that doesn’t answer the Q...
A2 My new campus did a come and go dinner a week before we reported. We also did a book study over the summer and it was really cool to see responses and connect too. #leadlap
A2: We do Kindergarten Walk-Abouts (home visits) to our incoming Kinders. It is such an amazing day. I give them a note from me, & our teachers give them tons of ideas & treats to get ready for school. We also did this in other grade levels this summer too! #LeadLap
A2 #LeadLAP I thought about my staff all summer and let them know with texts affirming what they mean to me and our school. I will keep hear going throughout the year as I did not get to everyone...YET.
A2. We’ve been hard at work all summer! Training one-on-one with new teachers, LISTENING! Connecting new teachers with mentors, & laying the groundwork for a robust, self-guided system of teacher PD thanks to some #gamification ideas we picked up from @SeriousPlayConf#leadlap
A2: I’ve always loved retreats focused on fun and connection as opposed to business. Would love to look at some fun activities (zip line, adventure course, nature center, etc) down the line #leadlap
A2: We plan a back-to-school cookout for staff and all of our families right after school starts, send out a sign-up over summer to get everyone excited about it (and get it on their calendars)! #leadlap
A2: Some of our @CentralCabotpK4 tribe had an awesome idea to have everyone bring in a current pic and a pic of them in elementary school to make a ‘Guess Who’ board. Our kids and families loved it! #leadlap
A2. Engaging in home visits for all of our new incoming grade 9 families. We need to remember that we register families not just students. #Leadlap#Welcometothefamily
For Ss hold very informal tours of the building. For new Ts holding a very informal mtg this week and created a google doc with the invitations they could have their ?’s answered. #leadLAP
I have gone to some optional staff meetings this summer to get to know the teachers I will be working with.
My goal is to talk to all the Ts and really listen to what they need from a tech coach; so, I can help them the best and not waste time. #Leadlap
A2b: Our counselors host two new family orientation meetings for all families who have moved into our school over the summer! It’s a great way to meet our new families and connect with our new students! It’s coming up this week on Monday and Tuesday! #LeadLAP
Great things going on in elementary music and putting a focus on showcasing a variety of methods for PD could be motivating for different teaching styles among our district teachers. #LeadLAP#MusicEducation
#LeadLAP
The advantage of living in a REALLY small town is seeing colleagues throughout summer, sharing in the fun, and working to make this year extra-awesome. #leadlap
A2 @IndigoProgram , we value community and collaboration with all stakeholders. Over the summer, PTA hosts summer park days to stay connected and meet new families. We also just had our community picnic and drop in day for students to meet teachers #LeadLAP
It says ow to be the best parent but replace parent with teacher and/or mentor and it gets right to the heart of where we need to be as educators and mentors. #tlap#leadlap#betheone How to Be the Best Parent | Simon T. Bailey | Goalcast https://t.co/EkSZ2E1Lyp via @YouTube
A2: We met at school and revamped all of our bathrooms as a staff. We also attended a ton of free PD to get to know each other!!! It was AWESOME! #leadlap
We have a leadership retreat to build relationships and plan, we have a luncheon with team leaders and then we host a mixer before teachers return. #leadlap
A2: Some of our @CentralCabotpK4 tribe had an awesome idea to have everyone bring in a current pic and a pic of them in elementary school to make a ‘Guess Who’ board. Our kids and families loved it! #leadlap
A3: Play-Doh lesson from @burgessdave at #HiveSummit. I already have my Play-Doh ready for my Ts and the Ss in my TechSperts. Can't wait to see what they create and share! #LeadLAP
A3. For my students, I turned the entire syllabus into a welcome back game. Now it’s a team challenge through 10 stations with action-oriented work products at each so we never have to read the class rules again. Please steal it! https://t.co/fNci7xt7fk#LeadLAP
A2: After our Sorting Hat placed us in houses we spread out across the room & shout outs were given to all the different personalities, traits, & differences we bring as Ts...just like our Ss & classes will for the new year! We all need each other as a balance & support! #Leadlap
A1 I love to create a pep rally atmosphere to get us pumped and excited for the work ahead! Love the tradition of ending with a champagne toast...silver and gold candies instead of the real stuff! #Leadlap
A2: With staff and students doing service projects together like making backpacks for students who can't buy supplies or helping the homeless shelter. Through working together for a purpose we form connections of kindness. ❤️ #LeadLAP
A3: Dances, BBQs, and Assemblies are all fun, but if a student can make a true connection with someone else on Day 1 and trust they will see that same adult or student on Day 2, they will want to come back to continue that relationship. #LeadLAP
A3 after reading TLAP we decided to make the first two days of school all about fun and relationship building. We also have our STUCO put on pep assemblies and competitions those days. #LeadLAP
A3: I hope I can see each student face to face at some point during the day. Greet them in the morning or a visit to their class. Make a personal connection. #relationships#LeadLAP
My work is my hobby as well, so I sometimes feel punished when I have to take a break. Fortunately, I have a great family and church that keeps me in line...but no little ones. #leadlap

A2 Ask staff to choose a "wellbeing partner" for the year. They will check in with each other on the 5 elements of wellbeing and how they currently experience life. How is wellbeing impacting their performance? #leadlap
A3: We greeted our students, wrote on the sidewalks to welcome them....AND...We surprised our students and staff with a matching shirt. We were ALL untied as a community & team! IT. WAS. AWESOME!!!! #leadlap
A3: I try to make connections with each child! My goal was to know all 95 names by Wednesday! And I made it!
My son was sick this week and I already missed 2 days! They told me how much they missed me! Must be doing something right!
#LeadLAP
We had a theme as well. Inspired by Dr. Seuss, “Oh, the Places (We’ll) Go! We are new admin to the building and a lot of new staff. The school is decked out in Dr. Seuss decor and phrases. T created our on hashtag BaleandBeyond to go along w/ the theme. #LeadLAP
A3: Loved how @EdmsToros Staff all lined the entrance with Pom-poms and cheered and played music as Ss entered school day 1 and @phmustangs had a balloon arch and WEB leaders greeting everyone as they entered #leadlap
A3: This year, we are doing photo booths around campus where families will get their picture taken when they arrive on that first day, and then we will email them a copy to welcome them to the new school year! #leadLAP
A3: Don’t be afraid to connect with kids. I was playing on the playground on the first day and blew out a shoe. A little tape and a whole lot of laughs I was back playing outside. #LeadLAP
A3: Our team all wore the same shirts, we did a Facebook live video of those entering the building and we partnered with a local Bojangles' to bring out the mascot and give away coupons. #LeadLAP
A3 I can’t wait to greet and uplift students on the first day & every day. My position allows me to push into many classrooms and I want to support not only students but their amazing teachers too! #leadlap
A3: I always love to see how many people have used or adapted and used the Day One Play Doh lesson from #tlap!! The pictures make my day each year! Just discussed it in #HiveSummit, as well. #LeadLAP
A3 One of the schools in my district invites community members & families to welcome Ss with a roaring pep rally. I ❤️it! I also would like to have welcome to the first day of school notes for each S from a family member or a mentor. #Leadlap
A3- excited about our first day 'pep' rally- a little dancing like last year but adding to it- introducing teaching teams- running through banners to their songs and some team cup challenges! #LeadLAP
Hey #leadlap Ryals, AP @KeokukHawthorne joining late. I lost track of time watching this thing snooze. Trying to get my tweet game up and running for the school year.
Q3 #LeadLAP We took an idea I saw on Twitter. We made positive quote posters then lined up and cheered as students entered school, high fiving as they passed. It was a huge success and a new tradition has been born.
A3: Roll out the red carpet literally and figuratively for Ss and staff. The first day (first week!) should be all about building the excitement and culture that will carry throughout the year. Day 1 should be the biggest celebration of the year. #LeadLAP
A1: We’re adding more choice by having Ts sign up for 30 min breakout sessions to lead on something they learned this summer or they’re passionate about. For example I’m leading a session on the benefits of Twitter and I’m gonna have Ts explore different hashtags! #LeadLAP
A3: We arranged for a small drum line to bring Freshmen in, and welcomed everyone with our #WarriorWednesday... first day happened to be on a Wednesday!! #leadlap
A2 I had coffee one one one w most my teachers this summer to get to know their hearts, team Leader retreat focused on connecting, asking their input for initiatives before just starting them. #LeadLAP
A3 we did a new year’s celebration and I dressed as a graduate so we all knew the overarching goal kids loved cheering on the grades by year of HS graduation #leadlap
A3: This summer I took everything off of the front office walls. We then hung large canvases of S all over (with room to add more). The look on the Ss faces when they came in and looked around was priceless. They know they matter and are celebrated! #LeadLAP
A3 Wearable technology and room design collaboration challenges to foster innovators mindset and develop a culture of innovation & divergent thinking to empower learning and infuse authenticity. #leadLAP#LEAPeffect
A3: We started & ended our day with an EPIC dance party!! Throughout the day, we focused on building relationships & had a ton of fun learning about 1st Grade! Ss were so excited & we’ve had perfect attendance all week! We’re off to a great start! #LeadLAP
A3: fun activities to get to know students and so students can get to know staff too and build relationships... not just with their homeroom teacher. #LeadLAP
A3) Our school is all decorated for our Fair theme! I’m excited to tie that into my class one day one to make it fun and Ss are still learning procedures #LeadLAP
Right? This chat has caused me to think about having Ss be “big siblings” to a new Teacher. What a radical change to the power dynamic concepts! #leadLAP
A3: First day unforgettable-ness is a worthy goal, but also a lot of pressure. I think that if we make a mistake or forget something, day two provides another opportunity for greatness. #LeadLAP
It happened to be national watermelon day on our first day back. I wanted to review our school data, so made that the theme. There was a box of keys with QR codes on them which took them to a google form, upon answering the ? it told them which lock the key went to. #leadlap
A3. For the summer reading assessments, we worked with the entire @OConnellHS department to transform the usual “sit and get” exams into immersive themed worlds of team-based exploration, discovery, and play. #LeadLAP
A3: I’m hoping to set up speakers in our bus drive up lane to welcome all students/staff back with some tunes that put a smile on their faces walking into the building. After that lots of high fives and hugs. #leadlap
Gotta run #LeadLAP! Love the images of the enthusiastic manner in which you are all welcoming staff and students back to school!! It's going to be a great year with each of you at the helm!
A3: This summer I took everything off of the front office walls. We then hung large canvases of S all over (with room to add more). The look on the Ss faces when they came in and looked around was priceless. They know they matter and are celebrated! #LeadLAP
A3: when your principals hit some Fortnite dance moves in their Mario and Luigi outfits and they call you Mario and Luigi the rest of the week. #leadLap@BethHouf our moves are sick!
A3:
Relationships>Content
The first days are where we make them feel so valued, and a part of something. We learn their names, and something about them.
Content later. Assessments later. Relationships and learning each child comes first.
#leadlap
A3: Be “positivity visible” throughout the day. Meet & greet staff, students, visitors. We together show all what the “AMSA Way” is all about. Together, belonging, kindness and caring. #leadlap
We have a Welcome Crew to greet students outside with a bubble machine and music. I also have yard signs posted along the front of our school that say Welcome back, We love our teachers, We love our students, etc. and a first day Boohoo Yahoo breakfast for parents. #LeadLAP
I'm not sure!! Depends how big the group chat is! If I'm in a group chat with 50 people - some may find it a bit overwhelming. #saystheintrovert I like the idea - I was just curious!! #LeadLAP

A5: create opportunities for making memories. Sometimes it means going all out, and sometimes it means taking a moment to laugh with each other.
#leadlap

A5: Day 2 we treated just like DAY 1!!! We cheered on our students as they entered the building, handed out staff shoutout awards with our "Too Legit To Quit" cart, and sang Kiki Do You Love Me in the cafe!!! It was epic! #LeadLap
A5. Every Thursday our principal @patton_carl sends out a weekly staff newsletter with Shout Outs where we highlight the incredible work that our teachers are doing. Complete with links to their lesson plans and photos / videos from their classrooms! Amplify the awesome. #leadlap
A5 Before every meeting ask about how each team member is experiencing life and what is getting in the way of or encouraging their performance. #leadlap
A5: Appreciation matters...and it doesn't always have to come from the principal. Our staff shout out tradition starts from anyone. Always love this email chain! #LeadLAP
A5: A page out of @SteeleThoughts- CHOCOLATE! I’m kidding, but maybe not. Consistent support/encouragement for my Ts, providing resources to help them succeed, praise privately and publicly through social media, and consistently dropping into their classrooms. #LeadLAP
Just remember, not every teacher loves to be praised publicly. It makes some incredibly uncomfortable! I did it once to a staff member and regretted it the second after. #LeadLAP
A5 just wrote a blog on this today that will be posted tonight at https://t.co/9Od6hDZwBG. Treat everyday as though it’s the first day bring that positivity, wonderment and excitement all year long our attitude and the relationships we build make the difference here #LeadLAP
A5: Don’t look back. If you’re gonna do awesome stuff the first day, then there’s no reason to make the second day boring and going over a syllabus or other traditional things. Dive in! Keep it fun! The first day shouldn’t be in vain! #LeadLAP
Aw thank you so much- Usually I have to think super hard to form a tweet in these chats. But I am so passionate about this question, I just wrote from the heart and clicked tweet:) #LeadLAP
A5 I would love to have a slide show of our first week of school play in the lounge throughout the first month to show teachers to keep@the momentum. I would also like to video tape Ss giving Ts encouragement during testing just like we give them😊#LeadLAP
A6: I used to love having Ss model what "NOT" to do in the classroom, hahaha! They would come up with the wackiest things and we all belly laughed. #LeadLAP
A6: I have teams create expectations from real experiences that they have had. What are the characteristics of an effective classroom? What do your classmates do that interferes with your learning? What annoys you? What empowers you? Personalize them! #LeadLAP
A5: There is always something special going on in our teachers lounge from our Admin or PTA. They spoil us so much w/ special treats, breakfasts, lunches, etc...Their thank you in words and actions is felt throughout the year! Especially in words! #LeadLAP
A5: Celebrate every day with high energy and positivity! Ts and Ss feed off of that! Empower teachers to be the best they can be and support them every step of the way! Promote your school success so the community can jump on the momentum! #LeadLAP
A5. Remind yourself and your peeps daily the purpose of your work. Passion and enthusiasm can fade w/ the obstacles we face. Knowing your purpose keeps the fire alive. Passion is great...knowing your purpose is essential. #leadlap
A6: We have played scavenger hunts with the rules and/or had Ss act out rules for others. Simple, enjoyable, and gets the conversation going and point across. #LeadLAP
Providing intervention or redirection during a Ss misbehavior does not mean we’re not providing consequences! We want to prevent crisis/negative situations! Don’t change your consequences just change your delivery on how you offer them 😁 #teamBCSD#teamBCSDSEL#leadlap#Tier1
A5: I am SO thankful for my #PLN! They are bountiful resources of great ideas to keep JOY in school even in February. Seeking out strengths, get creative and celebrate = 🔑 to keep the momentum going! ❤️❤️❤️ #LeadLAP#Path2Serendipity#PrincipalsinAction@8Amber8
A3: Playing a song that is popular right now as Ss enter the room to sing along with and have some movement ready for them to learn so they can dance too!!! #LeadLAP#MusicEducation#MusicInspiresLife
A6 make it into a game or scavenger hunt, have students produce videos and make songs to learn and share with the class. Most importantly involve the students in the process allow them to build the rules, procedures and expectations #leadlap
A5: Continuing to support staff throughout the year to let them know their awesome work is seen is critical - notes, convos, shout-outs. Educators work very hard. It's nice when people see it and call it out. Plus, ongoing meaningful learning, community building, & fun. #leadlap
A6) I love having students act out the rules in my class showing positive and negative. I also want to have students teach the expectations by creating videos using Flipgrid to share with younger grades. #LeadLAP
A6: Play acting the rules, have students develop them together, move around the building so they can practice the rules everywhere they need them. Don't just tell them, teach them and have fun with it MODEL. #LeadlAP
A1: Have fun. I’m a fan of at least one adult piñata. Filled with full size candy, some dollar bills, coupons for “prizes” like a book, gift card, coffee. #LeadLAP
A6: Our classes each create an Essential Agreement and then the kids sign it. They do it together, so they can all agree on what they believe will make their year successful for all! #LeadLAP
A6: Have staff put on a hillatious play of what not to do. Freeze frame and allow students to fix the scene and showcase rules in a comedy of errors. Then have them do it the right way with students coaching the "actors". 😂❤️ #LeadLAP
A6 Some Ts co-create the norms for their classrooms with the kids. Few like top down - create a community & learning flourishes. Not MY room but OUR learning space. #leadlap
A6: Why not have Ss help in creating class rules. Ss can brainstorm what kind of class they would like. W/ character counts, we say that any class rule could fall under one of the 6 pillars. This gives Ss ownership over how class will function #LeadLAP
A6: Bring student voice! Ask them what they need in order to have the almost perfect school year #positivediscipline get them creating the rules and norms through dialogue, reflection, then action! #leadlap
A6(2): For my colleagues we touch our norms every collaboration and at the beginning of the year we reevaluate our department values, mission, vision and norms to make sure that they still serve our needs. #LeadLAP
A5. Being GRATEFUL is critical. If you see the blessings, it is hard to focus on the negatives. Remind yourself and your people to give thanks every day in their personal and professional lives. #leadlap
A1: Have fun. I’m a fan of at least one adult piñata. Filled with full size candy, some dollar bills, coupons for “prizes” like a book, gift card, coffee. #LeadLAP
A4: We have several first year teachers to our building. On Friday, I left them a special hand written note on their computers before they arrived to keep them motivated and show appreciation. They made it through the first week of school. #LeadLAP
A6 pt.2: One of my favorite activities we did in our #personalizedlearning classes was a B2S activity where S's wrote on 3 charts: What do you want the class to feel like, look like, sound like? That was the beginning of the class vision, SOP's (rules), Code, etc. #LeadLAP
A6: 1. Having Ss sketchnote the expectations/rules @HeckAwesome! Let them make those connections. 2. Let them actually do stuff and get up and moving instead of just listening. 3. Incorporate videos created by previous Ss to get the message across. #Leadlap#KidsLead
There could be a door hanger that teachers put out when they need to “go”. Anyone could respond as they pass by. 😉 I’m sure hydrated teachers are much nicer and more effective. 💦 #LeadlAP
In reply to
@GenvieveD, @BethHouf, @burgess_shelley
A5: Take risks! I'm fortunate that I work in a place where we are encouraged to think outside the box and take some risks. We can't ask our kids to take risks if we aren't willing to. #LeadLAP
A6- include Ss in creating the expectations and even PSA's to share with other students. Buy In... if they are part of the process and get the 'why' more apt to follow the expectations #LeadLAP
A6. I turned my usual classroom rules & procedures rundown into a #studentcentered small group activity. What was one boring lecture is now 10 hands-on centers. Instant engagement and no more death by syllabus. Feel free to use it as your own! https://t.co/2CPuTY1aLQ#leadlap
Next time I change up teams, "You've been working on things to say and do. Now let's reflect on things that we shouldn't say or do...and why... school appro, of course" I'm thinking we should explain how empathy fits. #leadLAP
A6 Students and teachers create Treatment Agreements, specials teachers walk around with students and act out rules in different areas of the school. #LeadLAP
A6: I love talking in accents so I will go over them (modeling the right and wrong way) in a completely silly overdramatic way, then have the students come up with their own acting if they want. #LeadLAP
I would ❤️ to do a room transformation in the lounge several times a year to surprise our staff (Coffee cafe, a game room, a restaurant, a zen room) #leadLAP
A6: I like Ss to tell me what they could do to get into the biggest trouble or how to break the rules! Then I counter with...what can we do to make sure we don't! The "We Can" vs "We Can't" #LeadLAP
A1: At our school we made use of the Compass Theme. After reading #LEADLAP, I asked my team to incorporate the compass as we lead our team in a forward direction of positivity and educational excellence.
A6: Get rid of the “don’t’s”. Allow Ss to collectively come up with expectations. Make a funny video or act out what it looks like, and what it doesn’t. #LeadLAP
Merissa here jumping in late...I overslept! 😆
Just like we do with curriculum for Ss, keep the content engaging and meaningful to Ts. We like to mix in team builders and movements breaks into our PD and the staff tends to stay more focused.
#LeadLAP
I'm seeing a shift away from emphasis on scores to innovation. Of course, we want good scores, but innovation is more likely to lead us upward in the long-term #leadLAP
Q2: Check in circle! Asking ?s w layers of depth to provoke connection. Love that welcome back letter delivered to each staff member’s home. Also, asking for volunteers to lead group exercises-there’s connection about the work in a fun way before the heavy lifting. #LeadLAP
A6: Treat learning expectations just like you treat any important learning. Make it fun and empowering, and personalize it to make it important to Ss.
https://t.co/vFvyQ3VhWv#leadlap#Path2Serendipity
Today’s leaders can no longer just model the expected…need to also be able to model the unexpected (requires new mindset for leadership). Engage empathy, vulnerability, awareness, strategic risk-taking, & willingness to engage in questions that move us beyond the known. #leadlap
A7: A functional classroom set up. A good school set up. Acknowledge that some students are introverts & what that means. Mindfulness in the classroom. #LeadLAP
A6: I have always loved having students create skits to teach each other the expectations. Also, making sure to break up expectations and routine talks with fun activities. Not all have to be covered on the first day of school. #leadlap
A6 Tying rules to how they will benefit students and create a healthy/safe/fun learning environment for them. Help them understand rules aren't negative. #leadlap
A7 I have a teacher that does a meditation to start class it is a quiet time were they just sit and self lecture and focus on breathing and clearing their minds #leadlap
@BethHouf A1: We completed an Ice breaker called the “Compass Activity” to lead our staff to learn one another’s work place preferences so we can work collaboratively this year. #LeadLAP
A7: This is the best time of year for nature walks and outdoor play. Take advantage of the weather and its affect on the mind, heart, and soul. #LeadLAP
A5: Be positive & visible throughout each and every day. Meet & greet staff, students, visitors. We together show all what the “AMSA Way” is all about. Together, belonging, kindness and caring. #LeadLap
A7: Zen for me means making things easier! I love how @lamearELA created a simple video of awesomeness to help us understand what our house system is at FMS! https://t.co/xdoiH1rLxT#LeadLAP
A7: I have transformed my office (I never used it) into a space for Ts and Ss to go when they need some quiet space. Heading to the teacher store in just a few minutes to get some different scenes to transform the walls. (beach, mountains, open field, etc) #LeadLAP
@BethHouf A2: This year we intent to reintroduce the Hospitality committee so we can be intentional in loving one another as a team and starting focused on teaching and learning #LeadLAP
A7: At student leadership camp they built in BOB time. Body on Bunk. It was thirty minutes of rest time to decompress. I think during teacher back to school week, this type of protected and required slow-down time is also important. #LeadLAP
Just took a bunch of these answers for Question 6 and added them to my Smore for the #1st3days! Thank you all for such great ideas for making procedures/rules into a way to build relationships! #leadLAP
Creating welcoming environments where Ss want to be really helps Ss feel excited to be at school.
For Day 3 at my school I just put up an interactive bulletin board to engage the whole school in a conversation about learning. I am so excited to see what happens Monday!
#LeadLAP
A6: Classroom - We setup teams, I give them a sheet of questions related to expectations, the next day, we use a google form to submit answers (game show style) and then compete in minute to win it games. #LeadLAP
Yes,and not only recognize some are introverts, but that "It's not about me." We need to model that, verbalize it, and lead all into a good understanding of the value of strengths, weaknesses, and better together. #leadlap
A4: I plan to leave tons of positive notes during my visits to their classrooms. Tweeting out great teaching moments. Bragging about my staff on our Facebook page and dropping in to take over for 30 minutes for each teacher within the first three weeks of schools. #LeadLAP
#LeadLAP A4: I like to create an environment that makes them excited... sometimes its a huge team build competition and this year its a cruise theme complete with leis, candy cocktails, and boarding photos!
A7: When we take away the confusion for kids, we help them organize their thoughts and feelings. Try to make things fun, yet predictable for those that struggle with "seat of the pants" teaching #LeadLAP - Gt to kn0w your kids early so you can help them
A5- We start every staff meeting with celebrations. The focus on the positive and the shout outs help with the culture. People want to come to work when they like their coworkers. #LeadLAP
A7. @DJOMrsD is the guru of educational zen. Her trauma informed #APUSH classroom places minimal focus on grades while still achieving tremendous results, and features a soft seating space & a self serve tea area. Inspires me to be a better teacher! #leadlap
A7 Remembering when I was a new teacher my greatest stress came from the first few days being full of meetings/training when all I wanted to do is prepare my room/lessons for the first day/week. Protecting preparation time creates zen for new teachers. #leadlap
A6: Bring students into the mix to help. Last year, we had students create funny
& engaging videos about behaviors we wanted to see in our school. It certainly made learning the rules memorable for students. #leadlap
A7. Zen for me is being treated and treating people with kindness. Things slow down on my space/ Time continuum if I act in kindness. Or at least I feel they do. #leadLAP
A7: Ensuring a variety of spaces in the classroom and building (reading nooks, comfy couches, etc.). I also think that we can allow Ss and Ts options and different entry points into activities even on the first day to ensure everyone feels comfortable. #LeadLAP
A7: calm down time and practicing mindfulness. I saw an example during our first week of school this week. @teachtoeach was using @GoNoodle as a tool. #leadlap
a8 A culture of literacy is built into inquiry-based learning. I talk less & Ss read more. They differentiate between when to skim & when to read closely. #leadlap
A7 To bring zen, mindfulness practice is key. Just some quiet time. @GoNoodle has some good mindfulness practices for kids. I also have several teachers who do a rest and read after recess. @maripazberlin#leadlap
A7 we are making peace areas in rooms and have a stocked calming corner in lounge for staff, also encouraging staff to speak up if they need a moment and have others jumping in as we are a team #LeadLAP
A8: @EricaJHogan and I did a middle school bedtime story the night before school with this book. Such a great message for people of all ages! (we also snuck in our how to drop off in the morning) #LeadLAP
A7: Mindfulness moment of the day. Give students and staff a positive mindful or meditative practice after lunch or in the morning. Have students and staff practice and learn these skills together. Students will benefit from the adults learning and doing zen beside them. #LeadLAP
Thank you @BethHouf for an INCREDIBLE back-to-school chat! You OWNED!
And, how about our #Leadlap PIRATE PLFamily?!
BOOM!
You guys shared so many EDUawesome ideas!
We are truly #BetterTogether.
Have an ROCKIN' weekend, friends!
A7: actually just started making this yesterday! Using my inside out people from last year, made a spot between filing cabinets with a curtain hanging so students can go there to self-regulate there emotions and show how they are feeling. #LeadLAP
A7 Music is my answer to so many questions, because it gets me feeling every emotion there is including close to calm:) For Ss, definitely providing relaxing music and hands on creating. #leadlap
A5: Remember building relationships is an ongoing process. We can’t forget to bring the fun throughout the ENTIRE year. I love to surprise my Ss when they least expect it. #LeadLAP
I spoke with my principal about continuing this interactive board all year round. I wanted to find a way to let S voices be heard. In my directions I encourage the Ss to: Have fun, be respectful and come back and see other responses.
I think Ss are going to love it!

Q7: Painting our #oneWord. Calming music during reading time. Everyone seems to like the sofa in my classroom reading space too! And, play-doh is amazingly calming for Ss and Ts. #LeadLAP
A5: Momentum this year for elementary #musiced district teachers will continue through a GroupMe app chat to share questions, answers, collaboration and teaching moments. #LeadLAP#MusicEducation
A7 Our PE teacher teaches Yoga to middle school. He also ends elementary lessons with yoga. Great way to calm down before getting back to work! #leadlap
Teachers entered a “win” or success they had on a Google Form and then I sent the results out to the whole staff on Wednesday. It was awesome to celebrate staff and students! #howmanywins#LeadLAP@HowManyWins

A7 - starting our day with breathing exercises and incorporating more mindfulness... it's ok to just be.. kids (and adults) need more time to just be (disconnect, no distractions)
maybe even some coloring to music ;) #LeadLAP
A8: I am a fan of Iggy Peck, Rosie Revere, & Ada Twist to inspire kids to be creative, think outside the box & to teach them to ask questions & seek answers even if their thinking is different than others! Been using them for Summer Read Alouds! https://t.co/GiElmK17CE#leadlap
A8: I loved reading 1.Ruby the Copycat and 2.Miss Nelson is Missing to my 5th/6th grade Ss. Teaches having pride in your uniqueness and following the rules.

A8. @LiteracyWorld’s “Literacy and Learning Centers for The Big Kids” is everything. Best book I’ve found on the subject (and I read A. LOT. of ed books). https://t.co/FOmo3kGqIk#leadlap
A6 With littles I act out the examples and non-examples of expectations. And draw a visual to go with it, with their input on my drawings. Fun and memorable. #Leadlap
A5) In my experience, it's all about follow through. We have to show investment in the lives of our Ss & colleagues every single day, tap into who they are, bring out their strengths, & be relentless about giving them opportunities to use them. #leadlap
As an aide I get to spend time all over the building. I love using my time to say "Hi!" to Ss & Ts asking how their day is going. I have also spoken with my DLC about creating fun QR code challenges around the school in a sort of scavenger hunt to give us all a surprise!#LeadLAP
A4: My admin team is very intentional in checking in on teachers to ensure their need are met as well as doing quick walkthroughs highlighting only the positive at this time #LeadLAP
Thank you! I am humbled by all the support! Y'all keep me motivated to see this through! Book 32 will be blogged tonight! #4OCF#LeadLAP#tlap#DBC50Summer
A8 This book goes way back to my teaching days with @BethHouf but Yo Yes is my all time favorite and I used it every year...Courage, Acceptance and Friendship are essential at every age. #leadlap
