Good evening amazing #formativechat PLN! Susan, instructional coach, Loudoun County VA, looking forward to learning together :) A favorite quote falls in line with tonight’s topic!
Hi everyone! I'm Jordyn and I'm a pre-service ss teacher at Grove City College in PA. I'm really excited to be back at #formativechat tonight! Looking forward to learning from current teachers!
A1: Not developing SEL skills is like giving a flower water and food-then keeping it in a dark closet! We must teach the whole child, empathy and communication ❤️#formativechat
A1: SEL skills are essential for Ss to be able to communicate where they are feeling lost or struggling, empathize with others, and help others within the classroom. #formativechat
A1 Ss need to develop interpersonal skills and the #SEL skills that will help them to become aware of their strengths and needs, how to set goals, problem solve, interact with others #formativechat
A1 Strong SEL skills help students develop their interpersonal and intrapersonal intelligences, making them well-rounded individuals #SEL#formativechat
Agreed. Love the graphic. Empathy should be bigger and in the middle because it grows all the others around and deeper understanding of all. #formativechat

A1 Students are bombarded with messages about what’s “important” from teachers, each other, their families and communities, the media, their own bodies—everywhere. If we don’t teach them how to choose to do what matters, someone or something will decide for them. #formativechat
A1: Ss must be able to articulate the way they approach learning. In order to engage fully, learner must feel safe in the classroom environment. No one learns deeply when threatened or in fear of failing. #formativechat

Definitely #pbl my Ss doing theirs have really learned so much more by connecting with other Ss thru @edmodo and writing to one another, such a deeper, more authentic understanding #formativechat
Yes, we can help to guide them, but we have to let them figure things out on their own, develop their skills, set goals, self-assess, how to analyze info and more #formativechat
School can be so future-focused. We ask what students must be able to do in order to be employable members of a democratic society. #SEL skills shape their futures, but they’re also present-focused: how can students live meaningful lives right now? #formativechat
A2: Teach skills on how to persevere, have grit, fail forward, and have a growth mindset. This can be achieved through allowing Ss to redo work, think of a work as never finished but something to build upon. #formativechat
Ss should perceive the teacher as an ally, a fellow traveler on the learning journey. Too many Ss see the teacher as a gatekeeper between them and their success. Unfortunate. We can do better. #formativechat
A1 SEL is impt because it helps Ss gain perspective of their peers and how to relate with each other, gives them a chance to interaact and express what they feel #formativechat
A2: Literature is also a great way for Ss to talk about character actions and motives and talk about what is social and emotionally acceptable in society. It would be great to challenge and question those norms too. #formativechat
A2: every time Ss make connections to their lives and collaborate with their peers they have the chance to practice SEL as long as Ts are intentional about it #formativechat
A2 I feel like it all starts with the tone you set in your classroom. If your classroom is a safe place that fosters a positive environment, Ss can better develop their #SEL skills #formativechat
A2: Perhaps metacognitive activities like reflection journals or letters to self can work here. Simply providing Ss a way to express how they feel during learning process. Provides Ts with excellent ways to personalize learning. #formativechat
A1#SEL so important because it is the basis for self regulation, personal awareness, and interpersonal skills. Safety, awereness, and stability 1st #formativechat
A2 Involve Ss in collaborative activities, get them to learn about peers, model the diff skills, also thru #pbl and other lessons, develop empathy thru reading, gaming, #formativechat

Agreed. Ss need to feel the classroom as a place to feel safe and loved. Choosing the right combination of Ss from year to year helps ensure this as well. Constant communication b/t grades is essential. #formativechat

Provide opportunities for Ss to create the learning experience. Choices for demonstrating mastery, for assessment, for evidence. A place for self-agency. #formativechat
A2 Build in opportunities for engagement and collaboration in assignments and work. Have the describe their level of comfort and understanding. The should be able to talk about it. #formativechat
A2 We can embed opportunities for #SEL into our day-to-day routines. We can ask students to connect lessons, assignments, projects, and group activities to sources of meaning in their own lives. #formativechat#empowerstudents
A2 always make sure to provide opportunities for Ss to support SEL whether an individual, pair or group activity. They need to express and interact thru games, stories or any related activities #formativechat
A2: Ask Ss to write letters to the future Ss of the course. How did I engage in this course? What are the strategies I used for success? Creating a success manual written by Ss for Ss. #formativechat
A2) I think we have to stop thinking that #SEL is something that we have to bring in the classroom. It has and always will be present in our classrooms. #formativechat
It is something that we need to include each day, through collaborative activities, icebreakers, questions based on a reading, video, Ss stories #SEL#formativechat
We can also ask, at any point, “Who in this class supports you in a meaningful way? Who in this class pushes you to think differently or more deeply? Who in this class inspires you by setting a positive example?” https://t.co/y2kYJvCFCc#formativechat
A3: Warm-ups asking them how they would handle a situation before reading could have them connect and grow in terms of understanding social strategies. #formativechat
I love the idea of random acts of kindness!! In our virtual setting we take some time once a month to have kids give a compliment to one another in their live sessions :) #formativechat
I'm really intrigued by the topic of #SEL ! Hopefully I'll be learning about it in some of my education classes soon! Thank you all for everything you've shared. I'm learning so much I'll be able to use with my future Ss some day #formativechat
A3: Teach Ss the value of understanding how their emotions and awareness of them help to assess thier learning progress, every reaction to learning, positive or negative is part of the process #formativechat
& living a growth mindset life is so important for kids to witness! Showing that as a teacher you make mistakes but use them as learning experiences is so helpful- modeling daily with the small things makes a big impact! #formativechat
A3: I believe that everything we do within the classroom transfers outside into the community and beyond. Ss need to learn how to use the skills and strategies we teach in situations outside in the real world and should be able to think outside the box. #formativechat
A3: Mindfulness in learning -- simply being aware in the moment. Appreciating the joy of learning and recognizing the opportunity to miss the mark, receive feedback, and then try again. Mindfully progressing each day. #formativechat
A3 when Ss know how to problem solve or to ask help when needed and to reach out to their peers when someone needs or when they express what they truly feel #selfawareness#SEL#formativechat
A3 Observations, kind words, smiles, and fist bumps. Kid are not standards, they are humans who crave positive attention. Watch, look, listen, smile. #formativechat
Thanks all for the engaging chat and the time learning together this evening, have an amazing week and a very happy holiday! :) keep kids at the center of all teaching and learning! #formativechat
Thanks for joining #formativechat everyone! Since the next two Mondays fall on Christmas & NY, the next #formativechat will be on Monday, January 8th! See you in 2018!
A3: I think we have to be careful with our assessment ‘tools’ here. We can’t simply slap down rubrics and checklists. I think it requires thoughtful conversation rooted in the desire to nurture. Not evaluative. #formativechat
Great point! Self-assessment is a great way to assess #SEL. Their ability to accurately respond to the assessment itself is an indicator of all the core competencies of #SEL#formativechat
