Teachers who provide hands on learning experience to students, doing group activities such as role play and ongoing detailed feedback to dig deep to understand improvements that need to be made #TEDEdChat
Brett from Oregon here! Special Ed teacher who loves making curriculum and teacher supports (Co-editor of the NNSTOY Social Justice Book List) and supports for people with autism (Ability Guidebooks). #tededchat
I am wondering if we mean 'un-learn' because we have been shown to be incorrect in some way, or 'un-learn' a method of doing things to allow for innovation #TEDEdChat
Mary Wade late here for #tededchat! I have literally had this chat in my phone for months, but this is the 1st time timing has worked out w/ my little ones! We'll see how long I last!!
A1 I like to see how everybody is doing it...especially with math. Since I'm a special ed teacher I'm always looking for a different way to teach EVERYTHING... since you never know which method just might click! #tededchat
To encourage innovative solutions I ask students to go back to what they need. Example, you ask for a tissue but really you need something to clean up a spill. Going back to the 'need' statement opens up more solutions in students' minds #TEDEdChat
A1: As a T, the single best way for me to "unlearn" has been to read as much as possible from other Ts--blogs, books, etc. Can't even tell you how many times my thinking has been beautifully challenged since I started doing this. Love my RSS feed. #tededchat#PLN
Outdoor Education has been on my radar for a few years now, working in schools have developed amazing programs with it. Would love to incorporate more of that into every school. #TEDEdChat

Funny, it actually went in the opposite order for me. Started with email subscriptions. Then Twitter. Added RSS feeds on Feedly just a couple years ago--I really like the layout without clogging my inbox. :) #TedEDchat
I think there has to be a culture of learning at the school. Leadership needs to make professional learning a priority and allow for teacher choice in selecting opportunities.
So great! Reminds me of ads I've seen that will turn kids' drawings into tangible things (I'm pretty sure I've seen stuffed toys, t-shirts, etc.). #TEDEDchat
Instead of study guide questions for books, I ask my students to write down quotes that resonate with them. Then we have a book club meeting and share our quotes and reflect upon the significance of each one. My students always present new ideas. Powerful. #tededchat

A1 Begin by exploring a task without giving it a name then allow ss to problem solve and share before giving the activity a theoretical name It’s called innovation #TEDEdChat
Hats are cool, your son gets that! More comfy than other things too it looks like. But yes, finding new uses for objects we already see in such young people who don't have a particular purpose for what they are doing. #TEDEdChat
Hi Troy I have incorporated #OutdoorEducation for 27 years but some managers were hostile to it even though it was part of units I delivered but students loved it. #TEDEdChat@IOLOutdoorProfs

That's incredible insight. As one who was never "good" at Art, I appreciate this perspective a lot. Also see it with not just non-verbal, but also in low-literacy. #TEDEdChat
Here's one! https://t.co/efYwdkJNIA#TedEdchat. Such a treasure might need to come to life!! Crayola does it, too, as do a lot of Etsy shops, I believe! :)
A3 Less subject defined time. Solve a problem, investigate a concept, explore a different place. Calling it History, Science, Maths, Art narrows the field of vision #TEDEdChat
#TEDEdChat A3 We have taken our Ss #beyondclassroomwalls. Our 6-8 Graders have visited Sweden, Russia and Canada this year. Grades 2-3 will visit Israel in January. Allows Ss to communicate and share their culture with the world.
A3: #Agency. When Ss' ability to choose & plan is honored so they can take the wheel at their own learning, amazing things happen. Many ways for this, but one that's intrigued me lately is Ss planning their own day, ie @makingoodhumans: https://t.co/alSog8fbUx#tededchat
Exponential learning including visiting sites to actually see the cause of the issues and how this can be solved. International experience such as exchange can be very helpful as it allows students to dig deeper into a new culture #TEDEdChat
For international experience, it should be longer term because individuals don't see the actual problems by only reading news and commercials where non profit organizations are promoting the issues and awareness #TEDEdChat

Leaving old technology and ways of teaching/showing sth behind. Forget the traditional way of experiencing and learning sth. Lessons shouldn’t necessarily take place inside the class #TEDEdChat
A2 Not my students but a group of artists decided to explain extinction. Their completely immersive experience of 'heading into the void' (you didn't know what was on the other side) changed my views of how art and science could be integrated #TedEDChat

Perhaps this will allow students to have less on misperceptions of why certain issues exists. Also students might be able to come up with issues besides what's being heard #TEDEdChat
A1: It is important for students' to know how things are made for example - Plantain Chips how do they get to the local Whole Foods? Well, a lot of manpower goes into those delicious snacks https://t.co/8t9cJXjkDU via @YouTube#tededchat
A1- In my English Classroom, I think about what I want Ss to be able to do with the information or skill and begin by having them try it with minimal or no instruction. Then my instruction becomes problem solving or revision. #tededchat
A4 Think of the A, B, Cs
Ask because students know.
Be prepared to act, support, and be amazed.
Cultivate collaborative creative classroom culture.

Students chose important structures in their community to build and I sat back and listened as to WHY they thought it was important . Students have very different needs and reasoning than adults and it's important to hear what they have to say .
The art installation was designed to challenge people. I finally found a video- you were not told anything before you entered the container, besides you will get wet, and you can do it with as many clothes as you like #TEDEdChathttps://t.co/D3XPQundbH
#TedEdChat A4- 1st we have to get to know our students. After, we have to show them MANY different paths. Not everyone’s passion is going to be “school oriented”— be open to making connections to your content and their dreams.
Thanks for sharing the pic. Sitting back and watching the Ss share their thoughts without jumping in can be challenging. The more we listen, the more respected they feel, the stronger the relationship, the more cool things can happpen. #TEDEdChat

A3: This is a great question! I think organizations like @XQAmerica are experimenting with "Mobilizing America To Reimagine Public High School" are trying to put students at the center of their education https://t.co/r8bNYZhT4A#TEDEdChat

Unassigned by teacher Authentic STEM tasks where student voice and passion lead the way. As a teacher we facilitate and guide - but need to get out of their way and let them thrive .
Instead of saying "follow your passion", it's important to teach students about the changes in 21st century, encourage students to read about those changes that are happening in this century and provide experience to students such as volunteering #TEDEdChat
Watch out for the put downs! Foster this system of sharing amongst each other, help model that for them. Watch how their reactions towards one another can change. #TEDEdChat
A3. I’m spoiled because my Pre-K Ss have daily opportunities for dramatic play and STEM play where they can explore their understanding of the world while adding their own twist to it. I wish all grade levels had the same opportunities embedded into their curriculum. #TEDEdChat
That is the secret to parenting and passion based learning.
Find out what your kids/students are passionate about, and encourage them to pursue it. #TEDEdChat#parentingadvice
