Hi All! I'm Barb Gentille Green from Ohio and my favorite holiday tradition is baking and cooking with my family in the kitchen as we prepare for the family gathering!
Loui Lord Nelson from Indianapolis, IN. Holiday tradition - decorating the house the weekend after Thanksgiving and then spending every night possible in the family room enjoying the decor. #UDLchat
Hello! Kelley from Columbus, IN. Favorite holiday tradition would be our Christmas Eve meal - chicken velvet soup, shrimp cocktail, and 2 layer jello cake #UDLchat
Hey hey! Jena Fahlbush joining tonight from the @PATINSPROJECT in Indiana! For the last two years, I've really enjoyed making live wreaths with the best coworkers in the world! #UDLchat
#UDLchat Hi! Hillary from Maine. Chilling with visions of our annual family Christmas Light Tour dancing in my head. Love exploring our area and seeing the decor!
A1: model model model. I’ve been to a couple of staff meetings where I’ve learned a strategy for my classroom because our principal used it as part of the meeting. Also, as a teacher, it feels good knowing our admin are working hard at implementing UDL like we are. #UDLchat
A1: Openly stating that you hope to see movement in the classroom/le, hear constructive noise coming from the classroom/le, and hearing from the Ss about their learning goals and accomplishments. #UDLchat
A1: A great way for Admin to support is by modelling UDL in their own practice. Staff meetings, PD and in the classroom. Learner variability is everywhere! #UDLchat
A1-I think it would be helpful to have PDs that talk about universal design and provide opportunities for other teachers to discuss ideas/strategies #osussmce#udlchat
A1 #udl implementation can be supported by admins through modeling, mastery oriented feedback, meaningful collaboration and investing in innovators and early adopters to be teacher leaders to mobilize real change among colleagues and culture #UDLchat
A1) I believe helping teachers develop creative confidence is a great way to help teachers get started with UDL. It feels big and scary. Be supportive that implementation will change the way the classroom looks and that's OK :) #udlchat
A1: Promote a culture of learning and spend time learning the guidelines. If Ts are experiencing barriers, brainstorm ways the guidelines can reduce/remove those barriers. Discuss what that looks like during teacher planning or during TBTs. Give specific feedback. #UDLchat#OHUDL
Administrators can support the implementation of #UDL by clearly communicating their expectations to teachers, providing access to resources and PL that aid its implementation, opening and maintaining dialogue about UDL, and leading by example #udlchat
A1: admins could be willing to stop in just to see what’s going on with no evaluations attached to it sometimes. Always reflecting and asking questions. #UDLchat

Putting an #ObserveMe sign outside my classroom during a year where there were many observations/tours was such a good decision on my part. I met people that I wouldn’t have otherwise met, and got great feedback from people that were dropping by the classroom. #UDLchat
A2- leaders should be experts on the framework and stay up to date on new research, best practices, etc. and transfer this information to all teachers #osussmce#udlchat
A2: Admin can just go into classrooms and engage in what is happening. Not stand on the sidelines, but really interact and see what students are learning and sharing what they know. #UDLchat

I'm Kira Stahly, a student at The University of Kansas (live in Lawrence), and my favorite holiday tradition is cooking & watching Christmas movies with my family #udlchat
A2: Support teachers and bridging current practices two practices that are more universally designed. It’s not about throwing out everything that’s currently happening but looking at current practices in new ways. #udlchat
A2: continue modeling UDL in whatever leadership positions they’re in, and in conversations and/or work with colleagues—this helps create a culture of UDL, which leads to a stronger UDL mindset. #UDLchat
That’s really it, isn’t it? We’re all learners, and UDL isn’t a k12 framework—it’s for all learners. So when we start talking about how to best support teachers as learners, going to the #udl framework feels intuitive. #udlchat
Taking a look at what you're currently doing and being able to share why you're being intentional in doing that helps bridging practices with UDL. #udlchat
A2: Admins can inspect what they expect and give clear mastery-oriented feedback about that. Providing time for peer observation, professional learning or inspiration, and affirmation of promising practices. #UDLchat
I really like this idea of including students in planning and implementation! They will be better able to communicate their needs if we're all on the same page. #osussmce#udlchat
A2: School leaders can ensure the successful implementation of #UDL through team teaching, providing constructive feedback, leading book studies, sharing PL opportunities with teachers, and setting aside time at meetings for teachers to discuss their success stories #udlchat
Q3: I think that everyone in the classroom is such an important player when it comes to UDL. Everyone's input and engagement is key to success. #udlchat#edu435
A3: The learner truly makes the difference. Because we look to the learner to design what works. (And since we are all learners, we all make the difference) #UDLchat
A2 We need a clear vision (goals) of what short term and long term success will look like. We need quantitative and qualitative data to help us measure success in implementation. We need it from all stakeholders—students, teachers, parents, admins, support staff, etc. #udlchat
A3: everyone can make a difference in a UDL environment if we, as leaders, are willing to step back and let others guide their own learning. But always active on the sidelines mentoring , building relationships, and (of course) reflecting. #UDLchat
A3: everybody—and I’m not just saying that as a cop-out! In my experience, UDL is more effective the more collaborative it is (and that’s education in general, right?). A bigger difference is made the more hands are on deck and joining in the conversation. #UDLchat
A3b: though if I’m taking into account our material reality, most classrooms are structured with teachers having all the power, so teachers are an integral part of creating an environment where everyone feels empowered to work together no matter their differences/needs #UDLchat
A3- The students & teachers- learner variability is the norm & makes the difference in our approach...proactively anticipating barriers & universally accommodating makes the difference in our success! #udlchat
A3 I believe administrators and Ts create the environments for UDL to be able to thrive. Intentional implementation from all angles makes the journey successful. #udlchat
Q4: I mentioned before communicating with students. But I really think it applies here too. It is so important to collaborate with students and find out whats working for them and what isnt. Collab is key. #udlchat#edu435
A3 Anyone who shares that environment. Admins grant the permission, Ts put in the design time, prof learning application, responsible risks & solicit S input. Ss become critical consumers & users of the LE who advocate for change and innovation where they need it most. #udlchat
A4: Be willing to change and grow. If you are, you will see your learners change and grow. And fight your UDL comrades who will keep you in the fight when you want to tap out. #UDLchat
A4: Expect to wish you had done something better, and give yourself the time to make the changes. Don’t treat the students equally. Treat them fairly. #udlchat
A4: Be willing to change and grow. If you are, you will see your learners change and grow. And find your UDL comrades who will keep you in the fight when you want to tap out. #UDLchat
A3: All of us! Teacher collective efficacy can have a huge impact! John Hattie has reported that Collective Teacher Efficacy has the greatest impact on student learning #UDLchat
A4: start with small chunks, don’t give up when it doesn’t work the way you envisioned, ask for help, collaborate with others who are like-minded and be willing to give it another try with a change or two. #UDLchat
A4: it has helped me, as an able-bodied person, to study ableism and learn the history of disability rights. This has helped me see UDL as an educational justice issue and a moral imperative, which motivates me in UDL implementation far more than evaluations. #UDLchat
A4: If it seems overwhelming, start small. Challenge yourself to dive deeper into what engages your kids and try a new technique that is out of your comfort zone #UDLchat
A4-I think you need to be reflective to always improve and have clear reason of why you're doing it to remind yourself when it gets challenging #osussmce#udlchat
A4 "Start small. Choose one focus within the framework. Choose one focus within your practice. Enlist the involvement of other teachers and talk with each other about your experiences. Trade suggestions. Share successes. Watch for change." D&D #udlchat
A4: If it seems overwhelming, start small. Challenge yourself to dive deeper into what engages your kids and try a new technique that is out of your comfort zone #UDLchat
A4: One suggestion for #UDL implementation success? An open mind. Dare to discover that what you think has been working hasn’t. UDL can help you be more effective, develop better practice, and have tons more fun. #LoveTeachingAgain#UDLchat
That's a wrap for #UDLchat! Huge thank you to @Ronbrogers & @BeckyFurbay for a great discussion. See you on December 19 for our last chat of 2018 with @BGentilleGreen! [GIF: person signing "Thank you!" emphatically]

A4 #udl doesn’t thrive on autopilot. Everyone needs ongoing support and access to high quality professional learning, coaching and collaboration. You have to have a way to onboard new teachers—they don’t become part of your UDL narrative by default. #udlchat
A4: Connect with others and reflect on your own experiences as a learner. When did you empowered as a learner and how does that connect to #UDL#UDLchat

#udlchat Q2. Join in! Know what's happening in the classroom and be an active participant through planning, approve resources, and observe student work.
“Everyone knows someone or loves someone who is at risk of being excluded from something. When you exclude that person, you’re also excluding everyone who cares about them.” — Sam Johnston, Dir of Postsecondary & Workforce Development at CAST #ISW2018#UDLchat@ISchoolsNetwork
I just downloaded the remind me app - this may be my new best friend. Thank you for the suggestion! #udlChat#ADHDlife
Hey @RogueTrina - check out “remind me”.
Want to talk UDL? Join #UDLchat with Ohio's own Becky Furbay and Ron Rogers as co-facilitators for 60 minutes of learning in 30 minutes this Wednesday, Dec 5th from 9-9:30pm ET. For more info check out https://t.co/408qjRikLV@OHEducation@UDL_Center#OHUDL
A2. Taking enough time to research, prepare and play is important to successful implementation. Also introducing teachers and leaders to the UDL community will help ease into a whole new way to teach and learn.#UDLchat
