Have you read A Classroom of One? It’s well-written, hilarious & has golden nuggets for all educators - students/mentors and those in between. Check it out on Amazon @ https://t.co/M27BeT2ArM ! Then RT why you’d love a copy, for a chance at a FREE copy of your own! #cuechat
Elsbeth, Education Specialist Mild/Mod, 7th Grade ELA/SS, I did not student teach, started on an emergency credential with 1st/2nd, Intern last year in my current position and now Prelim! #cuechat
A1: my program (#ULV) had lots of support, almost weekly observations at first. My mentor helped a bunch and so did my instructor. It helped I had been subbing for 3 years. I always had someone to turn to for help or to just vent(or buy me a beer!) #cuechat
Who knew someone actually wrote a book about the experience between a student teacher and mentors? This book would be a great addition for all coaches to have. Who doesn’t need those nuggets to drive connections. #cuechat@dustin772

My A1 is a question. How do we get more cutting edge teachers to mentor. Seems that the “tried and true” teacher tends to gets the student teacher #cuechat
My original master teacher declined to take me so the very well-meaning principal shopped me around from room to room “Hey, do you want a student teacher?” (Please never do that to someone) #cuechat
A1: I had a really good experience and a really bad experience STing. One was encouraging and helpful the other was super controlling. I learned how to love kids in one and what to be alert to in the other.#cuechat As far as mentoring the main thing is to encourage and lift.
A1 I was an intern and was overloaded with learning so many “new” procedures. I was also formerly observed 17 times in one year between Admin and CalState. #cuechat

A1) Though my first placement didn’t start off on the beat for, the second master teacher was awesome. It taught me a lot about how to be a good mentor. #cuechat
A1: Its interesting to me to see my progression, no help during my emergency, decent help during my intern...now in my third year teaching I feel more supported by @Induction_FUSD in my BTSA than through my WHOLE process! Weekly check ins, PD and lots of support. #cuechat
Hey all, I'm co-moderating #cuechat tonight! We're talking student teachers, mentor teachers, and squirrels. Come play if you have opinions on any of these things.

A2: I have not invited a Student T in my classroom YET! That is a great idea. I did invite some other teachers to visit me tomorrow, so I'm getting started with sharing #CUEchat#WeAreCUE
A2: I've had 8 student teachers. I think it's a great experience for all involved, especially the students who get to teach a future teacher how to do their thing. I think it's especially important for ToC to host SToC. #cuechat
A2: I actually was volun-TOLD that I would have a student teacher - but it's been a huge blessing. I awesomely read A Classroom of One early last year - not knowing I would be mentoring! #cuechat
A2: I asked and showed interest, and reached out to my credential program, sadly, my district went with the “more veteran” teachers who basically took the semester off and had a sink or swim mentality with her mentee. I was just “that young punk with ideas” #cuechat
A2: Not yet! I mentored people as a TOSA but never as a classroom T. I hope to in the coming years! When my #eduprotocols game is more well developed #cuechat#wearecue

A1- Really good experiences K Bilingual - after that I knew kinder was not for me. 2nd part of Student Teaching - 5th gr- within a 2 weeks the kids were mine. #CUECHAT
Q2: Initially, I was hesitant because I didn't think I had much to offer compared to a veteran teacher, but I find myself opening up more! One is stopping by tomorrow! #CUEChat#WeAreCUE

That’s my role now. I got a district to mentor, but not that one on one type of experience. I feel I could learn so much from a fresh new teacher, probably just as much as they would learn from me! #cuechat

A2 I have never had the opportunity to have a student teacher but I am able to offer support to them as a district CPS. (Curriculum Program Specialist) #cuechat
Hi #cuechat! Anthony from Central Cal. Happy to join in tonight! Never student taught. Because of my science background, I got thrown right in to an internship. #baptismbyfire But I've mentored several student teachers over the years. Hello everyone!

Q3: A major part of both student and mentor teaching is observing. In the book I suggest 2 and 2 column charts (Likes/Suggestions for MT; Notice/Questions/Other for ST). What needs to happen for observations to use useful? (Do better than "Be Specific"/"Good relationships")
Gotta explain the cardboard, the miles of duck tape, the crawling on the floors....If you can explain it, it's all good. Right, Doug?! @TheWeirdTeacher#cuechat

A2 #cuechat I had my first student teacher last year. Freaking loved the experience. Was able to share everything I’ve learned with someone who wants to do what I do. Not to mention how nice it is to have another adult to do small group instruction. Would do it again in a ❤️
A2 I have found having a student teacher is extremely rewarding for all involved. I learn just as much through the process as my student teachers. When 1 teaches, 2 learn. #cuechat
#cuechat More classroom teacher should write books, specific focused books, about classroom teaching from the classroom. We should be telling our story
A3: As an induction mentor, We must cite evidence. That was always so helpful since it was an observation rather than an evaluation. Video taping the lesson for the mentee to watch is imperative. I know we hate to be on video, but you have to see yourself in action. #cuechat

A3 suggestions in context, demo strategies & maybe a fieldtrip where MT and ST observe another teacher together and discuss what they are seeing. #cuechat

#CueChat I have just recently gotten into taping lessons for refletive purposes and once you get past the "I'm never wearing those pants ever again" it's crazy helpful

A3 Being under the microscope is so difficult for a newbie. I try to be very positive. Immediate feedback with what are positive behaviors not punitive statements about what they did "wrong" #cuechat
#cuechat GREAT point! I always think about telling my swim coach "I dunno, what should I work on?" and she got SO mad at me. "What do YOU want to work on? You're the swimmer."

It is so easy for me to really dissect my practices when I am I. A safe place. When you feel critiqued is when Ts get defensive and the bravery starts to leave you. Bravery to GROW. #cuechat
#cuechat Q4: Big Rocks are the Most Important Things for someone to know, Small Rocks come next, then Sand is the fine details. What are some examples of Big Rocks, Small Rocks, and Sand in your classroom/school?
Love this post. Makes sense of the person being observed self-reflects on the areas they need support. Why I like #Observeme#cuechat#microsoftclassroom
#cuechat GREAT point! I always think about telling my swim coach "I dunno, what should I work on?" and she got SO mad at me. "What do YOU want to work on? You're the swimmer."
A4: Big: solid learning community based on trust, support and forgiveness.
Small: Discovering our unique gifts and letting them guide and fuel our learning
Sand: Academics (Sand is vital but it can all fit in snuggly when the others are in place!) #cuechat
A4: Big Rock- Relationships, first. Small Rocks- Let them know why they are learning whatever it is, in their terms. Sand-sparkle/confetti= joy and happiness....sprinkle it everywhere! #cuechat
#cuechat Oh@ I like your reasoning but I want to disagree about the academics being sand. Seems like they should be Small Rocks at least...but I like how you described how it fits in
Big Rock is our new online PD. Small Rocks is how to play the game. The sand is all the smiles they are learning playing @AlludoPlay for #PBL. #cuechat

#cuechat
A6: Relationship Building, #EduProtocols, Creating a Trifecta: Parent, Students, Teacher, Being a Life-long Learner, Tech Integration (I had to learn how to use a reel to reel and flimstrip...competency checklist) #CUEchat
A6. Integration of technology and content standards. How to differentiate your classroom and provide personalized learning opportunities. How to create digital lessons. (Hyperdocs) #cuechat

A4. Big rocks are the hardest to lift and requires teamwork - the knowledge target. Small rocks are easier to move but still require practice - the skill. Sand in small quantities are easier but need the practiced knowledge, skill and professional support. #cuechat
Q6 "How to Disrupt the Status Quo as a New Teacher" So called "veterans" can suck the life blood from a new T. They may be stuck in their ways and constantly pull the "experience card". That w lacking tenure destroys risk & innovation for a newbie. #cuechat
