I am so excited to be moderating this chat tonight! I am looking forward to learning alongside all of you! What professional development opportunities do you have coming up that you are excited about? #formativechat
Yooooooohoooooooo!!! Kristen her from PA! I totally was kidding with my ss today that I’m walking peg legged because I’m practicing to be a pirate for Halloween. Many shook their heads like, “oh yeah, that makes sense.” 😂😂 my work here is done. #tlap for life #formativechat
A1: It has changed a great deal! Educators no longer have to rely on their own reading/research and local conferences to attend. Now learning is in each of our laps through being connected...Twitter, Voxer, webinars, online reading, and SO MUCH MORE! #formativechat
A1: I see more and more educators taking control of their professional learning. They are not waiting for their district or campus to send them...they are seeking out learning experiences that THEY want to explore more! #FormativeChat
Welcome back, Maureen! Thanks for helping us spread the word about #FormativeSummit recently! We are still stoked on the awesome job you did hosting #formativechat a few weeks back!
A1: I feel that it use to be one person leading the discussion for professional development. Now it is a team process of what we know to help our kids! Each teacher has something to bring to the table!#formativechat
I’m presenting 2 sessions at our State convention. One of getting kids excited about class, and how to use technology in the class. I’m very excited. #FormativeChat
A1: technology has blasted PD into fabulousness. Love being on Twitter and YouTube and listening to podcasts. Best part of PD as a busy non stop mom is that it comes to me. It's always at my fingertips #FormativeChat
Professional learning, more plentiful due to the internet, can be far more personal than before. Audiences of 20-30 interested Ts can replace auditoriums of 200 Ts that may or may not want to be there. It can also be at ANY TIME, nut just during holidays. #formativechat
A1: Professional learning at the county level for me has become more about choice and support with less sit and get and more exploration. #formativechat
A1: Professional learning used to be a one size fits all. large group classroom type scenario. Now, educators are being empowered to choose their own learning format and topic. Many educators use social media to learn on their own weekl instead of sporadically. #formativechat
#formativechat A1: only been teaching for 6 years, but I would guess six years ago twitter isn't the value it is today. Also, the addition of so many digital resources and webinars? There have always been classes to take
#formativechat Hi Maureen, I am Ash from Mumbai, India. I love Instruction Design. Not directly involved with schools since 2001. But still a passionate learner.
A1: I think there is more opportunity for “pull PD”-PD that we can find & pull into our world based on needs at a time that works for us vs. “push PD”-same ideas, same time, one place. #formativechat
A1: My I began teaching, we were ALL herded into a large room and HEARD a presentation. Now I feel like we can explore our own needs and participate in the process of PD. #formativechat
A1: PD also can occur outside of the T’s district with strong PLNs on Twitter and edcamps. A T has more resources and people to connect with on different levels. It’s not compartmentalized any more. #formativechat
A1: Professional learning in education often misses the point of effectiveness when it seeks to replicate the business world. Educators should have agency over their learning since they possess expertise in the very field of learning. #formativechat
A1 althoughI still attend and learn at conferences and classes, I have learned so much from other educators on Twitter, and other social media #formativechat
A1- I feel like it use to be sit an get where now its more discussions and hands on learning. A lot of the sit an get are emailed to staff members. We have also added personalized professional development where teachers get a say in what they would like to attend. #formativechat
A1 - Here is my list
1. No chalk
2. White boards
3. Computers
4. A million apps that went around 10 years ago.
5. Google
6. Twitter
Professional learning is now at our fingertips. It’s up to us if we want to embrace it. #FormativeChat
Thank goodness the herding days are in the past. I would always hope to learn one good thing out of hours of the same-old PD pitch repackaged. #formativechat
A1: My I began teaching, we were ALL herded into a large room and HEARD a presentation. Now I feel like we can explore our own needs and participate in the process of PD. #formativechat
A1 #formativechat prof learning has either gone one of two ways. We’re either still doing the same thing we did 20 years ago or we are using twitter chats, webinars, skype, FaceTime, or conferences to learn. We don’t wait for our district to do pd, we seek it ourselves
A1: In my 8 years of teaching, professional development has changed from product-oriented to more process-oriented through personalization and individualization of the learning process. #FormativeChat
A1 Lots of ways to learn, books, blogs, twitter chats, Voxer groups, being part of the #MIEExpert@MicrosoftEDU community and learning together #formativechat
A1 Professoinal learning has become specific in an overall educational setting and within a content PD is now more relevant to the day to day classroom routine #formativechat
Great list! Everyone has access. It has become more a question of what can you do with the preponderance of resources at your fingertips 24/7 #formativechat
A1 The biggest change that I have noticed has been more and more educators presenting instead of experts coming in from the outside. Learning from colleagues instead of outsiders. #formativechat
The most effective professional learning is that which can be applied directly to one’s pedagogy. Though there is a place for theory, praxis is something to be valued. #formativechat
Never realized the power of twitter chats and how a PLN can provide so much PD! It's amazing how much I've learned and implemented over the last two months. #FormativeChat
Yes! We love how you mention...global! So many different things to learn from educators in different states/ regions/ countries, new ways of teachings #formativechat
A1: Professional learning has changed because the world has changed. Ts are wanting to focus on what is relevant and personal plus learning with other teachers instead of "sit and get" #formativechat
A1 The biggest change that I have noticed has been more and more educators presenting instead of experts coming in from the outside. Learning from colleagues instead of outsiders. #formativechat
Love this, so thankful that there are more options designed for all educators to choose, whether at home in a Twitter chat, to a conference, doing a webinar, #FormativeChat
A2: Formative assessments can support professional learning by helping us to reach our goals, continue to grow as an educator, and make changes for and because of our students. Continuous reflection of our learning is key! #FormativeChat
A2: Formative assess should be ongoing & daily, with Ts using this data to plan both long-term & to provide targeted instruction in the moment. Knowing where your kids need support should guide your own professional learning as you seek & learn based on their needs #formativechat
A2: Formative assessment can help support PD during the process. What does the learner know? What can they do? How are they processing the knowledge? Where will they use what they’ve learned? #formativechat
A2 It is important to honor where people are coming from. If you don't take the time to get the pulse of the room, your ideas may not be well received or understood by the audience. #formativechat
A2. How nice would it be for administrators (guilty) to IN-formatively assess PD as we go along... make changes in the process...ensure learning is digested #formativechat
A2: Formative assessment can support PD as a way of checking how teachers have applied what they learned beyond the initial excitement of the PD. It shows the true risk taking after the PD is over. #formativechat
A2 similar to how it’s used in the classroom- a check for understanding! How many times do we receive PD and are thrown into the deep end & never checked on? #allthetime#FormativeChat
At my school we offer tech training 2x a month. We’ve turned it into a working session for teachers. We offer a survey ahead of time for apps/sites for teachers to choose from! We are then able to offer what our staff is interested in! #formativechat
Formative assessments are for both Ts and Ss. Are the Ss on target? This is feedback for both! Assuming the T plans to adjust and evaluate their own methods. #formativechat
I enjoy listening to my colleagues present at PD. It makes it more relevant and I know I will have future access to them if I need support implementing whatever they are presenting on. #FormativeChat
A1: Formative assessment informs teachers and students what is and what is not working. Teachers are owning and driving their learning and sharing student work and the process with students. It's exciting! #formativechat
A2: Great potential for formative assessment/feedback in a peer setting. Colleagues interacting with other colleagues to assist each other to perfect their teaching craft. Iron sharpens iron. #formativechat
A2 - just as we formally assess students, the same holds true for teachers. We should always be analyzing our craft for ways to improve. In today’s world, learning applications is a process. Rarely is it ever done just one time. Practice and hands on experience 👍#FormativeChat
A2: The information gathered with formative assessments tells us where we need to seek out professional learning to extend our reach with students. We can also see if we are applying our learning in the most beneficial manner for our students. #formativechat
A2 #FormativeAssessment is such a global educational topic that it should be the thread woven in every PD Every subject area can benefit from FAs #formativechat
A2: Formative assessment can be used with Ts like it's used with Ss - it directs us by showing what know and what we still need to know. It guides us. #formativechat
This chat is flying by and so many awesome ideas and resources being shared! Thanks @techamys for these Qs that have us thinking! #formativechat#4OCFPLN
A2 - just as we formally assess students, the same holds true for teachers. We should always be analyzing our craft for ways to improve. In today’s world, learning applications is a process. Rarely is it ever done just one time. Practice and hands on experience 👍#FormativeChat
A2 #formativechat I think this is the crux of what we should be modeling for teachers. As admin we should assess teacher readiness, provide PD that helps build individual capacity. This needs to be in the form of collaboration & goal setting-just like true formative feedback
A1: From scripted, predetermined conferences and inservices taught by outside experts, to teacher led choices, even individually designed courses or workshops. #formativechat
A2- By using observations skills and questioning to hear where the teachers skill levels are. By the discussions I know if I need to go into detail on setting something up or can skip that part because of their prior knowledge.
#formativechat
A2: As someone who offers PD for a living, I can say I use formative assessment all the time! I observe, listen, use sticky notes, have participants make visible artifacts. All formative assessment. #FormativeChat
A2: True knowledge is knowing what you do not know. Formative assessment provides that insight and professional development should be geared towards strengthening individual weaknesses. Make it personal! #formativechat
#formativechat A2: formative assessment can be used to check for adult understanding during the PD, what is working and not working in the PD, and then for how did the PD go. How is the PD going as implemented in the classroom
That sounds terrible! Now we have so much information and so many good resources, it's difficult to sift through them. A good problem to have! #formativechat
In reply to
@MrsStaub307, @englishcomp, @KellyGToGo, @davestuartjr, @NancieAtwell, @pennykittle, @arielsacks
A2: Great vulnerability involved in formative assessment of one’s professional craft. So a wonderful way for teachers who push the growth mindset theory for Ss to “eat their own dog food.” #formativechat
A2 first it helps us identify a goal. We can't assess an objective we haven't created. Secondly it helps us with accountability as weove on our yearly journey before it's too late.
#formativechat
A2 I think of formative assessments as what can be developed from what we learned...yes they can be used to measure & mark achievement, but wouldn't it be cool if the only questions were "Demonstrate your understanding" & "How can you make what you learned better" #formativechat
A2: Assess what we know as teachers, what we want to know, how we are going to figure it out, what we need to learn, make a detailed plan to get there and reflect reflect reflect the entire time! #formativechat
Great point @Rdene915 FAs are a environment for a classroom They are not a standalone, but rather a pillar to build classroom routine & learning #formativechat
A2: Learning is all about change. It means that Ts can change with their Ss if they look at formative assessments and how they can improve their teaching practice. It is about a partnership between Ts and Ss. We are all in this together. #formativechat
A2
As many have already stated, formative assessment is at it's most powerful when it is used as feedback and feed forward for teachers. #formativechat#visiblelearning
Teaching, assessing, grading. These are part of a 2-way conversation between teacher and student....both learners. If one is not responding to a formative assessment, the conversation is now merely a lecture. We can model learning so much better! #formativechat
A2 That is an interesting question. The same way that it is used with students. Gather infomation from the target audience, assess prior knowledge on topics to be discussed come to mind. #formativechat
Formative assessment is important for learning, period. Students, teachers, clients, etc. Just because you've taught something doesn't mean they've learned it. Formative allows for course correction.#formativechat
#formativechat A2 As somebody who has been very involved with professional training, I can safely say that 'how we cultivate the learning culture, sets the tone for professional service later'. This model looks good to me.
A2: Let's rethink formative assessment so it is a collaborative process between teacher and student. A partnership in guiding change for teaching and learning. #formativechat
A2b - one very important point. Self selection of PD is so valuable. Not every tool is useable or liked by every teacher. Experimenting with your likes is no different than with kids. Meet people where they are, not where you are. #FormativeChat
A2 learning from opportunity - formative assessments don’t just help educators figure out where students are, they also can help determine if a teacher needs assistance- a new angle, maybe, a refresher, a reminder, or a total re-boot #formativechat
A2) I think about when we are in PLCs and we ask the question what do we do if our students have not learned? Doing the same thing again will have limited impact. Adult learning is necessary to ensure student learning. #formativechat
A3: I set goals and then keep track of my own progress towards meeting them; I reflect on student growth & determine where I need to focus on my own PD so I can better support staff #formativechat
A3: To reflect on my learning and teaching, I often lean on my #PLN#PLF. They never let me down! A goal this year, is to get back into blogging to also reflect on my learning and teaching. It is a goal I hope to reach! #FormativeChat
A3: Reflecting is super important. I really value other tech coaches that I follow and love the fact that they blog. I believe this is something in my near future. #formativechat
A2: We are all learners together. If we think like that then Ts can learn from their Ss. If Ts help Ss use formative assessment strategies with them, just imagine the learning that happens. Wow! #Formativechat#rethink_learning
A3: I have an old school journal that I take everywhere. I reflect, whether I am facilitating or learning, I adjust future plans, brainstorm how to get better. #FormativeChat
#formativechat A3 I reflect based on the data that comes from being able to not only be able to implement what I taught but getting feedback from my peers about effectiveness. I think going into colleagues classrooms makes one a better teacher.
A2: Formative assessment can be used with Ts like it's used with Ss - it directs us by showing what know and what we still need to know. It guides us. #formativechat
A3: I keep a journal & reflect on what went well & what didn't in class. I reflect on student response to my instruction and how I can better meet them where they are and move them forward. I collaborate with other professionals & listen to their ideas/experiences. #formativechat
A3: As a trainer, I need to see how the skills are ultimately being applied in the classroom. If I can build relationships with my teachers, I consider it a success!! #formativechat
A3 I do A LOT of PD on my own. Twitter chats, inservice and Teacher Center classes are been my best source for impactful convos with other Ts. I also reflect on my own at the end of the day. What worked? What didn't? What shoudl I do next? #formativechat
A3: Part of the reflection is constantly refining the PD to meet the teachers and ultimately the Ss. The PD needs to be relevant and applicable to what the T will need for support and guidance in the classroom to implement the initiatives. #formativechat
A3: I reflect by blogging and participating in Twitter chats. Lots of times the questions in chats bring reflections about things I'd never really thought of. #formativechat
A3 Ask participants in trainings & students in classes to let me know how things are going. I actually have my students leave reflections of their school year in my ELL class and one of the topics I ask them to address is "How can I do better for the next group?" #formativechat
I do a “rate the lesson” every class. Kids rank the class 1-10. It’s my way of showing them I value their feedback. Usually their numbers match mine. Reflection isn’t an option. Everyday we should evaluate the progress we’ve made. Doesn’t have to be pages. #FormativeChat
A2 - just as we formally assess students, the same holds true for teachers. We should always be analyzing our craft for ways to improve. In today’s world, learning applications is a process. Rarely is it ever done just one time. Practice and hands on experience 👍#FormativeChat
My reflections are of two modes: a) are Ss demonstrating learning of content? b) are Ss showing that they care? Does their effort reflect a belief that I care about THEM? What do the results say about our relationships? #formativechat
A3: So I just saw an interesting strategy for entries in a potential teaching reflection journal — GBOMB — Good, Bad, On My Brain. Perhaps a weekly/monthly way to focus my professional learning. #formativechat
A3 If you're not reflecting, you're not growing as a T It is so important to video some teaching to watch and listen You can see so many things differently when you watch yourself on video #formativechat
A3: I share what I'm doing and learning. I take risks when I put it out there on social media. I realized that there is so much more I don't know and can learn from other educators. I have. I've made mistakes & it is okay. So honored to know so many inspiring Ts. #formativechat
A3~ fortunate to have a few go to peeps who listen, provide specific feedback that is always action oriented & efficient ~ sprinkled with praise, ❤️& encouragement #formativechat
A3 trying to #sketchnote more to have something engaging to look back on, try out the tool/strategy & get a see what others think, reflect on relevancy #formativechat
A3: How many ss were engaged? Did the activity serve the purpose I wanted it to? How efficient did I implement my idea? Did I offer my ss choice? Did my ss know what was expected of them? We’re my directions clear? Did I get to talk to each of my ss? #mymind24/7 #formativechat
#formativechat A3: I use twitter #edchats, I talk to colleagues in the building, talk to teachers in the classes I am taking for ED Admin, talk to the people teaching the EDAD classes, email other #IBBIO teachers.....talk a lot. Look at the formative cycle that was posted
A1: professional learning is happening all the time everywhere. You can learn just about anything from anyone at anytime thanks to the internet. #formativechat#professionallearning
A2: As someone who offers PD for a living, I can say I use formative assessment all the time! I observe, listen, use sticky notes, have participants make visible artifacts. All formative assessment. #FormativeChat
A3: I reflect through open communication with my students and my fellow teachers! My kids know I want to help them achieve their goals so we communicate openly. My staff family are there to support and and any comments are all about making us better educators! #formativechat
A3: I am a firm believer in the double loop learning process and use it often when planning. In any type of reflection on teaching I rely on data, S feedback, and always ask myself questions about how I failed or succeeded. #formativechat
You and @LScumpieru just made me think how cool it would be if we held a twitter chat among participants of a workshop a week later to see what stuck and what ?s remain! #formativechat
A3: Appreciate student feedback, so ask them to reflect on my course and list what worked, what didn’t, what they wanted more of, and what they wanted less of. Opportunity for reflection on ways we may perceive things differently than our students. #formativechat
A2 first it helps us identify a goal. We can't assess an objective we haven't created. Secondly it helps us with accountability as weove on our yearly journey before it's too late.
#formativechat
Loved the chat #formativechat! Grabbing dinner real quick and heading over to #learnlap - y'all have a terrific night! Thanks again for the invite @Rdene915 & for great questions @techamys
#formativechat A3 Maintaining a journal. Even tweeting my learning for the day publicly. It helps to revisit it every now and then and see how things are changing over a period of time.
A3 I reflect on my teaching & learning in a few ways: twitter discussions with my PLN, designing educator illustrations, and by collaborating with peers. 💚🌻🧡.... to name a few ways. #formativechat
You and @LScumpieru just made me think how cool it would be if we held a twitter chat among participants of a workshop a week later to see what stuck and what ?s remain! #formativechat
A3 I try to ask Ss and Ts for a survey every semester on what could be better...also have teamed up on several co-teaching lessons...where I lack, they support and vice versa #formativechat
"We write to taste life twice, in the moment and in retrospect."--Anaïs Nin. I blog at: https://t.co/HVCqyGmhNd. Even if no one else reads it, It's mostly for me to reflect on my own learning and teaching journey. #formativechat
A3: I use reflection and push myself out of my comfort zone. I ask for feedback and sometimes it is tough. You think you are going in the right direction and then BAM - you realize the feedback is tough but right.Constantly learning... #formativechat cannot do it alone!
There is a tendency to make assessing more complicated than necessary. Try cold calling kids. You’ll figure out quickly who is listening, and they will definitely be attentive. It’s also a great way to play games and joke with students. #FormativeChat
A3: I set goals and then keep track of my own progress towards meeting them; I reflect on student growth & determine where I need to focus on my own PD so I can better support staff #formativechat
Tweeting, as you mentioned, has made me more self-reflective and grounded in my beliefs. If I am going to put it out there on social media, then I better believe it and act it. Holds me accountable! #FormativeChat
Thank you for the great chat. All of you are helping energize my evening after a long day! Thank you so much! Best PLN! #formativechat Have a great week!
Join us next week for #formativechat as #FormativeSummit speaker @DeaverDean guest hosts formativechat!
He's going to be leading our discussion about student-led initiatives and learning!
We want to give a HUGE thanks to @techamys for hosting #formativechat tonight! We loved the topic and being able to discuss how #formative assessment is integral to life-long learning!
Join @MrsHankinsClass this Sunday night at 7:30 pm est as she runs #teachpos. She is scoring touchdowns with football. Going to be a playoff atmosphere. #FormativeChat
Implementing a new Leadership Alliance for S leaders. I plan on starting a chat on leadership. I want to have a Q & A the week before to start the convo and acquisition of knowledge. Then another a week after our meeting as a follow up. More info to come. #formativechat
A3: Every day I write a reflection in my bullet journal about something I learned. I also encourage my students to do the same. At the end of the week, we pick one thing to share with someone. #formativechat#reflections
Speaking of scoreboards, I think it was @GustafsonBrad who reminded me a game played with a score is played differently than a game played without. #formativechat
A1: Its gone from sit and get to seek and find. Find your own PLN, PLC, and conferences you want to attend. It's a great shift for our profession! #FormativeChat
Obviously one of the best ways to assess yourself is through your Ss. I frequently ask my students to give honest feedback. I also reflect on my learning through blogging and cross-reference with student feedback. “Are the Ss growing?” #formativechat
Teaching in 1952, planning/prep time was limited to 45 min/day. 66 years later, we do the same thing although kids learn differently, teaching is more demanding & research points in a different way. That’s quite the achievement gap @ascd#formativechathttps://t.co/2C1BwRYjjh
A3: usually, I’d like to seek input from people who I work with and whom share the same goals. also I make every moment, a learnable moment #formativechat
