Intros: Tell us who you are, where you're from, and how you got interested in computer science and STEM concepts. Be sure to add the hashtag #EDpiper to all your tweets! @askatechnogirl
Hi, I'm Dr. Cindy Woody from Corsicana, TX & I work in Waco as a Sr. Innovation & Learning Consultant. I've loved all sorts of science/STEM for as long as I can remember. I am blessed to live on a farm. This is my semi-famous cow, Buttercup. She had a baby today! #EDpiper
Hi all! Jessica, Ed Specialist for Digital Innovation and Social Studies at @Region12 in TX...#hourofcode got me interested in #CS...loved watching our Ss work their way through the experiences! #EDpiper
Q1. Astronaut Dr. Mae Jemison, 1st woman of color in space, has launched the 100 Year Starship challenge to enable interstellar travel by 2112. How does this challenge impact schools? Be sure to add #EDpiper to all your tweets. @maejemison#100YSS#TCEA#ISTE@NASA
"When you teach coding to every kid, it has a ripple effect.... When girls learn programming skills, they become change agents." Great blog from Laura McClure that also includes quotes from @askatechnogirl! https://t.co/Z3f54SAqOg#EDpiper

A1: The byproducts of such an innovative feat will be amazing...we benefitted so much from technologies created during the Space Race! #EDpiperhttps://t.co/KQ3wvjPKil
I like to see a consistent set of high-quality “planned experiences” for all learners from an early age. Otherwise you start off with access & equity right from the start. #EDpiper
A2: I've been taking a free #computationalthinking course from @iste and learning as much as possible to be a resource for educators here in Region 12. #EDpiper
A2: in our district we host a district hour of code! On the Monday of Csed week our students stop and code for a hour! We also host stem/code family night #EDpiper
Q3: 74% of middle school girls say they are interested in STEM & CS, yet only 0.4% end up majoring in those fields. Stats are even worse for students of color. How can we help? Be sure to add #EDpiper to all tweets. #WomenInSTEM#WomenInScience#WomeninEngineering
A2: Just finished a Computational Thinking course from #ISTE. I really had no clue about computational thinking. The more I learned, the more I realized that we HAVE to be moving in this direction! #EDpiper
Students were born to love science, but negative experiences can shut that love down fast! Loving this blog by @SteveSpangler about the crucial need for creating positive, unforgettable early learning experiences in science. #EDpiper#WomenInScience#STEMhttps://t.co/vseduioCdP
A3: we can combat this issue by providing opportunities for students to actually get hands on experiences! Businesses will provide internships! Bringing in mentors! Being the front line of advocating for students of color! #edpiper
A3: Honestly, we have to help our minorities make connections...degrees are not enough...Ss need networks...love @juliaffreeland perspective on social capital and this article. #EDpiperhttps://t.co/WP83Bak7Sc
A3: Give them opportunities to learn about STEM. Conversations have been about STEM, introducting them to CT, problem solving, and more women in the field. They need to meet those women and be mentored by them. #EDpiper
Q4. Dr. Mae Jemison quoted a Yoruba proverb that said, "Even the sharpest blade can't cut its own handle." What does this mean to you in the context of CS & STEM for all? #EDpiper
"Someone needs your actions to inspire his actions. Never forget, your little broken cake is someone's daily meal! Care to share your little cake!" #EDpiper
R1: we need to engage in higher abstract thinking that pushes boundaries and requires people to fail. Without failure we will not meet and exceed these specifications. #EDPiper
R2: teaching science and making it fun. Incorporating history, writing, and mathematics into the lessons. Also making sure that arts play a significant role in learning as well. #EDPiper
A4: A PLN or connections or people you know are important...its great t teach the skills but if we never expose our Ss to the outer circle making it “in” becomes 10x harder. #EDpiper
I’ve always heard that if you’re making prefect grades, mastering every lesson, solving every problem, then you aren’t being challenged. The learning is in the productive struggle. #EDpiper
R3: we must co to us to make STEAM engaging for all our students. It isn’t just getting boys interested. Find ways to get girls to see that it is fun through activities that are oriented toward females. #EDPiper
A4: We need others to help. Ss need to know about the STEM world around them. It builds a greater interest and sharpens the skills they are learning in school. #EDpiper
Q5. What are your favorite resources for teaching computer science, STEM, design thinking, & computational thinking? What about teacher training? #EDpiper
NASA has a ton of free STEM teaching resources. They also have a SUPER annual conference at @NASA Space Center Houston. The bad news is that it was last week....The good news is its an annual conference! https://t.co/2xOX48ctD5#EDpiper
R4: I think we are looking at how smart we can be. If we put forward a little effort, we get little outcomes. More effort, greater outcomes. We need to set targets and reach for them with no excuses. #EDPiper
R5: I like to give limited info to Ss about a project and let their creativity flow. The Problem is that Ss have been told how to solve problems and follow instructions since preK. We need to let Ss be creative early on and let Ss be creative. #EDPiper
It takes students some time to adjust from being spoonfed all the details, doesn’t it? I always say that the one who does the work, does the learning. #EDpiper
Q6: Final thoughts on books or blogs we need to be reading, people we need to follow, websites we can use, student opportunities such as coding camps, or anything else you can share. Go! #EDpiper
It’s still there, inside of them. It’s good that you are challenging them and helping them tap into their true ability. But many will complain about it, so true! High school kids crack me up. Gotta love them! 🤣 #EDpiper
R6: don’t be afraid to utilize technology in all subject areas. I have lots of ideas of how education needs to move out of silos and into a blended curriculum where tech, subjects, and community involvement work in harmony. #EDPiper
I think that having a #Makerspace mentality also gives this creativity and collaboration skills to higher level. I would be interested in getting ideas about this program. #EDPiper
Let us hear from you! Please use this simple Google form to let us know if you try any idea from this #EDpiper chat or if you find more resources, need help, etc. https://t.co/V0XYqvZ7du
Thanks again to our amazing Guest Host @askatechnogirl for providing us with these questions and moderating our discussion tonight. Thanks to each member of our #EDpiper family who tweeted tonight, too! Our #PLN is better because you're here!
