#worldgeochat is a weekly chat focused on teaching geography and global studies. Chats vary between geography specific topics as well as general teaching and education topics. ALL are welcome in worldgeochat!
Welcome to #worldgeochat! Tonight we are talking about how to incorporate current events into your course. Please take a second to tell us who you are and where you are from.
#worldgeochat
Kayla Sullivan, middle school teacher from Wilmington, NC (yes, Hurricane Central), but currently camped out in SC! I am so excited for this chat to take my mind off of #flo#worldgeochat
Hello, #worldgeochat! It’s c/s from NG in DC, and late of Current Event Connection, a daily way to introduce current events discourse to the classroom: https://t.co/1SK2OnskT6
Ben, TX, 6th grade SS and science. I teach where we're from and who we are. Too country for the city and too city for the country. 😂 Glad to be back in the best #edchat on twitter, #worldgeochat :)

Hi Eric! Glad you could join in! We held our first draft last week! Definitely plan on sharing the awesomeness of fantasy geopolitics tonight! #worldgeochat
I LITERALLY have a country I invented called Lewisonia. The map is legit. I have a cloth flag in my classroom. I wrote a complete prehistory through industrial era tome. 😂 Dude, we on #worldgeochat are all the same. I LOVE IT!
In reply to
@GeorgeHistory, @JohnHonish, @WaunakeeCSD
Hey amazing #worldgeochat crew! Can't stay tonight BUT will share I use @LesPlan / @TheGlobalGoals as current news sources & try to ALWAYS see positive when sharing in a world sometimes consumed by negatives. @greatbigstory is often used to share the good about the world.
A1: A1: I use Fantasy Geopolitics @playfanschool , frequently use stories from @newsela, debates, show @CNN10 a lot, and this year I plan on using Kelly Gallagher’s article of the week again.
#worldgeochat
Q1: I think the first important thing is to pick events that relate to your Ss! Then possibly use a choice board for themselves to choose how to express their ideas about the event. #worldgeochat
Judith from Salem, VA - current events are REAL here as we are poised to be heavily impacted by Florence with winds and rains in the Appalachian MTns. Feeling for those on the coast #worldgeochat
A1 we're tied to ancient civ, so students choose a topic (women, minorities, environment, poverty...) and study its presence in the ancient context and again in a modern nation that overlaps the ancient civ. 1/2 #worldgeochat
A1: Oh dear.... I need to do more of this. Currently, I haven't done any current events yet except for 9/11. I usually use @playfanschool and @Newsela. I'm also looking to use them as "Fast Finisher" activities for points in my somewhat gamified class #worldgeochat
A1 we also use The Economist's coverage of current events in each country--short blurbs of about 300 words--to assess how democracy, freedom of the press, and human rights are treated--and find parallels or roots for those in the ancient civs #worldgeochat
A1
Anyone who doesn't answer @CNN10 with @CarlAzuzCNN is probably lying. Find me a middle schooler who doesn't think of Carl as a national treasure. You won't succeed.
#worldgeochat
A1: Balance into all classes via bell ringer or discussion. Today we compared what we know about Native Americans (on the news) to colonial interactions. APHG is easy, the course is a roll the CE for EGs #worldgeochat
A1 tbh, it answers the question "why do I need to learn this?" when they see that the roots of modern conflicts in places like #Syria can be traced back thousands of years. #worldgeochat
A1 - Not a real answer, but would love to hear how others 'use' resources while also engaging students, instilling a love of independently learning about current events #worldgeochat
A1 @playfanschool is my be all and end all. I have FANschool Friday Bellringer Bonus for extra FANschool points that sums up some of the biggest news from multiple continents #worldgeochat
A1
@Newsela - I'm assigning an Article of the Week a la @KellyGToGo using Newsela. Sometime it connects to our curriculum, other times, not so much. But it gets them exposed to nonfiction text, so that's a win!
#worldgeochat
A1: i start by incorporating @playfanschool (and having students complete weekly current events on their 'drafted' countries), and then weave their events in their year long world issues (genius hour type) project. #worldgeochat
We watched the segment on 9-11 today in class. We would be lost without @cnn10 and the fantastic work of @CarlAzuzCNN and the CNN10 team. #worldgeochat
In reply to
@cheffernan75, @CNN10, @CarlAzuzCNN, @CNN10, @CarlAzuzCNN
A1 for #worldgeochat Every Tuesday and Thursday I will post an article or video about something related to a current event and then have a discussion question the students have to post about. We then look at some responses on Wed/Fri
A1 The Guardian also offers excellent coverage in their "Inequality" section. They come with a strong liberal bias, which is worth discussing as well. No paywall though, just invitations to donate. #worldgeochat
#worldgeochat A1 Obviously, very easy to do in US Government class today. Love examining the US Constitution and how it applies to the students lives today. Look at events today to help students understand their rights and responsibilities.
A1/A2: Bring the real world into your classroom. Figure out ways to connect the past to our experiences/current events of today - https://t.co/FPEwL1nzzO#worldgeochat
it has worked out well! we complete weekly events on @Schoology and have the students take ownership of their countries. this year, i'm planning on incorporating some communicative skills by using @Flipgrid#worldgeochat@lfuinihetten
In reply to
@ecasey77, @playfanschool, @Schoology, @Flipgrid, @lfuinihetten
And the articles from @Newsela are engaging for students and accessible for all types of readers. Plus they are adding additional resources for teachers and students all the time. So thankful to be able to use @newsela with our students #worldgeochat
In reply to
@cheffernan75, @Newsela, @KellyGToGo, @Newsela, @Newsela
Smithsonian also has its own NewsELA-like feature called Tween Tribune that's great. Atlas Obscura is quirky but may be blocked by your schools' filters #worldgeochat
In reply to
@SamMandeville, @playfanschool, @Newsela
Q2 How do you encourage students that aren't as interested in the study of current events to see the value in studying and following the news?
#worldgeochat
A1 Each student is required to research/present 1 #currentevent per quarter (more for extra cred) and every Friday, they have the opportunity’s rollcall to present (lots wait til week 8.....) ha. #worldgeochat
A2: Fantasy geopolitics has been fantastic for sparking student interest in current events. Discussion with classmates and hopefully encouraging the conversations to continue at home also help to increase interest. #worldgeochat
Q2 How do you encourage students that aren't as interested in the study of current events to see the value in studying and following the news?
#worldgeochat
A1 not sure about everythingi can do being in a new district this year, but there’s a built in time for extension that I envision broadcasting #FANSchooLive with add/drop advice, who’s hot/not, flashes in the pan, etc #worldgeochat
Q2 How do you encourage students that aren't as interested in the study of current events to see the value in studying and following the news?
#worldgeochat
Q2: One voice about events happening today, can shape the course of history! No matter if you believe you are insignificant in this world, or the king of a nation! #worldgeochat
A2: i try to make ALL our current events as relative as possible. this often means curating my course around what's happening in the world. last may during the iran nuclear deal, we simulated the role of @realDonaldTrump in trying to renegotiate w/ iran. #worldgeochat
A2 my philosophy to make anything in middle school more interesting is attach points to it and add competition, so once again, the answer is @playfanschool#worldgeochat
Q2 How do you encourage students that aren't as interested in the study of current events to see the value in studying and following the news?
#worldgeochat
2- this is why it is important to find articles that are high interest to the Ss which isn't hard and to find articles about life in the countries for teenagers #worldgeochat
A2 our "assignment" for any current event topic is to identify 3 things you learned 2 questions you have, and 1 connection to outside learning or a personal experience, or a previous topic. This last is the most challenging but it's fun to play degrees of separation #worldgeochat
A2: a former colleague once said, “whatever a Ss is giving you on a particular day IS 100% of what they ‘can’ give you”. The importance of meeting them where they are and finding out what drives their curiosity and then find CEs that might fit their interests #worldgeochat
A2: It is all about presentation. I like to have the students drive the process, almost like a weekend update type of feel. When they have ownership, the focus increases. #worldgeochat
A2: find a topic that the Ss are interested in, then pull them in with stories that relate to it
most often sports headlines help build the bridge from reluctance to acceptance that news is all around us
#worldgeochat
A2 most of these, to be honest, are my boys I prevail on their interest in #futbol to get them engaged, whether it's examining the racial or religious backgrounds of the French team or how #Brexit will complicate player movement to England. They perk right up! #worldgeochat
A2: Try to make everything hit home. Know your kids and relay info in ways you know they'll respond to. Florence is heading to the east coast? I get my kids to remember Harvey. Everything which affects my fellow man affects me. #worldgeochat
#worldgeochat A2 Every decision that your government makes in some way affects you as a citizen. Important to know what is happening at the local, state and federal level. Try to bring in government officials to interact with our students to give them interest and knowledge.
A2
Like every other piece of content, you have to find a connection. I'm sure later on this week, we'll be talking about what if *you* had to evacuate your home. Then move on to hurricane coverage.
#worldgeochat
Q2 How do you encourage students that aren't as interested in the study of current events to see the value in studying and following the news?
#worldgeochat
A2: Sometimes a critical approach is a good way of involving students who aren’t invested. Ex: The @washingtonpost had an interesting article a couple years ago about commercializing Ground Zero that was a tonic to a lot of the discussions. #worldgeochathttps://t.co/wjDU2OizEW
In reply to
@GeoJo22, @cheffernan75, @GeorgeHistory, @ecasey77, @CNN10, @CarlAzuzCNN, @washingtonpost
A2 Try to connect dots--how do issues from 4th-16th century relate to today.--water rights, immigration, use of resources... EEI curriculum is awesome for some of these topics. https://t.co/BaNlbOatPg#worldgeochat
A2 I think middle schoolers are self centered enough sometimes that those FANschool points make it relevant to their world. Even if they only care about an event because it impacted their league standing, at least they know/care about it at all #worldgeochat
The Writing Revolution is a great resource for easy tips on teaching students to improve their writing. I just started reading it this weekend! #worldgeochat
In reply to
@ecasey77, @GeorgeHistory, @cheffernan75, @CNN10, @CarlAzuzCNN
A2 #worldgeochat I have also found that openly talking about how the issues affect me gets my students more interested. While discussing gentrification I talked about how hard it was to find a house in my budget. Several kids went hope and researched houses for me LOL
A2 I printed off @NatGeoEducation giant world map. Plan on getting it all laminated and set in a visible spot in school. Ss would regularly present on topics and qr code the info about a topic that other ss could check out during passing period. #worldgeochat
A2: I often try to tie it to their lives.
We're covering immigration rn & many of my Ss are immigrants, or their parents work for the Border Patrol, ICE, Customs or at the detention centers ...
It's interesting to see their perspective on these major events!
#worldgeochat
Letting students explore Streetview too is very powerful. Students explored street view images for the locations of their multicultural novel study. Many aha moments from our See Think Wonder activity. #worldgeochat
Don’t make it sound like a study!!! I use stories and human/nature interest stories to peak their curiosity. From there you can get them talking. What questions do you have about this? Dig deeper. And so on. #worldgeochat
Q2 How do you encourage students that aren't as interested in the study of current events to see the value in studying and following the news?
#worldgeochat
A2) I find something the student is interested in. I have yet to find one that has no interests. I find something current in that area. You a gamer? I find something. Sports fan? Find something. Comic book fan? Yep you better believe I've got you. #worldgeochat
Q3: Especially if you have an hour long class @BBCNewsround is a great resource for the beginning or end of class! The videos tend to be 5min, which still allows for some conversation time! #worldgeochat
YES!!!!!! I was about to say that! I got that idea from a webinar with @newsela last school year. Love having the added mapping feature to current events!! #worldgeochat
#worldgeochat A3 check out @NewsHourExtra and the resources they provide on a daily basis. Thanks to @vicpasquantonio and her staff for the work they do to assist teachers with current events.
A3: Newsela, Reuters, BBC, the AP, local/regional/national newspapers are my primary go-tos.
But I've also started using articles from ARAMCO World, the Economist, and WSJ.
#worldgeochat
A2: I often try to tie it to their lives.
We're covering immigration rn & many of my Ss are immigrants, or their parents work for the Border Patrol, ICE, Customs or at the detention centers ...

#worldgeochat
#worldgeochat One way I keep up with CEs myself is with the Skimm. They offer in depth guides on many topics. HS Ss could use too! https://t.co/ozXeb3jTBe
A3: Aside from the obvious answer which is the magic that is @CNN10, I've discovered that BBC World News seems to be on top of their game. #worldgeochat
A3: AllSides, Channel One (used to) and we look at trending stores around the world - school appropriate only. Giving CNN 10 a look tomorrow! #worldgeochat
Q3: Use your local newspapers and compare them to your local news stations! Have students investigate which one gives more information out to the public! #worldgeochat
Let me just put this out there. Every year I have to explain that GOOGLE is not a news site, it is a search engine to find news. Am I the only one?
#worldgeochat
A2 It would be great to ask Ss this question directly! Would be interesting if they said they were interested in the news but thru social media rather than 'traditional forms' which they probably associate w/ school more. Good opening for convo on how we communicate #worldgeochat
#worldgeochat@CNN10 and @BBCNewsround and @NPR and then we branch out from there when we need more information. Locally I also use @KevinMyattWx as he explains the weather phenomena in a way that my students understand and get interested in it.
A3) I may be a bit biased but I've always had a lot of success with Junior Scholastic. I'm not knocking the others, but this has worked for how I teach my classes. #worldgeochat
A3: i encourage my students to diversify themselves (cnn, msnbc, fox, breitbart, bbc) to effort to understand perspectives. HOWEVER, in my ap courses, i prefer my students to get their news straight from the source (ie @theresa_may ; @khamenei_ir ; etc) #worldgeochat
A3: I build lists of favorite go-tos on Twitter i.e. https://t.co/wWiIoqsh2Z + encourage students to do same wherever they are online
Also huge fans of (and score) @NYTimesLearning 🏆
“Facebook Watch” is interesting! Quartz News,
Untold America, Vox Borders #worldgeochat
#worldgeochat A3 The @Newseum provides the front pages of every major paper and several local papers each day. Great way to see the views of the media all over the nation & world. Also they provide lesson plans for teachers.
It's interesting to see the different viewpoints from what Ss bring from the convos they have with their Ps.
I'm trying to see if I can have Ps volunteer to come talk to the Ss about these issues & their careers.
#worldgeochat
that's really cool--it might be helpful to encourage recorded interviews or skype sessions for parents who can't come (or are reluctant) to the school #worldgeochat
A3 Flocab, of course, and I am trying to use CNN10 playing during passing time/as students enter class... not sure I have the time to show daily. Maybe make it a Monday thing? #worldgeochat
#worldgeochat A3 The @Newseum provides the front pages of every major paper and several local papers each day. Great way to see the views of the media all over the nation & world. Also they provide lesson plans for teachers.
A3 would be cool to have a My Maps map with all the major resources/news outlets that the Ss use and where they are located. Would be interesting to investigate how current events are reported in diff parts of the world.... #worldgeochat
I used to have students create a map/story for every CE we would do. They could map out with paths, polygons, and placemarks to better explain their thinking #worldgeochat
In reply to
@cheffernan75, @ParkersGeocats, @ecasey77, @Newsela
Sadly, our local paper has been absorbed by the Chicago Tribune. I'm sure its a good business decision, but I feel like we're missing some true local coverage.
#worldgeochat
It's interesting to see the different viewpoints from what Ss bring from the convos they have with their Ps.
I'm trying to see if I can have Ps volunteer to come talk to the Ss about these issues & their careers.
#worldgeochat
A4: having the Ss discuss the story will bring out the different POVs bc they will all take different things from the article/current event
#worldgeochat
Q4: Ss compare the headline newspaper of their own community (Wilmington,NC) to communities in CA, South Dakota, Illinois, NY, Texas, and other areas around the US to see what's important in those places #worldgeochat
Check out the Vox Borders series on Facebook Watch too! Lots of awesome current events-documentaries popping up there, like Quartz News and Untold America from AJ+ too #worldgeochat
Definitely as well as look at freedom of the press, access, as well as what are most popular news sources within the region or country being studied. #worldgeochat
A4
This takes time - and that's something we don't have since Current Events aren't in most state's standards. You have to look at different sources to see how a story is being covered.
#worldgeochat
Thanks bunches for the ideas. I’ll read the archives. Back to School Night has worn me out!!! See ya next week ( hopefully we have power then). #worldgeochat
Q4: DBQs can be used for current event showing both sides! I just completed one with my class on Kapernick! 'Freedom of Expression vs. Unpatriotic Actions' #worldgeochat
And local! I guarantee local reporters or editors would love to talk about how they cover events. TV weatherfolk are also usually local celebrities, so a good chance to bring #scicomm to the #worldgeochat discussion.
#worldgeochat A4 We had a great experience of discussing current issues last year with a class in Monterrey Mexico 🇲🇽. Developed questions and shared our points of view. Discussed views on immigration, gun control etc. Opportunity for our students to learn from peers.
A4
Even my father-in-law admits that if he watches an hour of CNN and an hour of Fox News, it's like he's on 2 different planets. Very different POVs. #worldgeochat
A4 I present several articles from a variety of sources along the spectrum and ask students to assess bias, looking at issues of vocabulary/diction, imagery, titles, emotional appeals, and more. We're creating our own media-bias chart! #worldgeochat
Nice, Todd! Our 'Daily News Stories' are located here: https://t.co/OBCTFgXqgs They include videos, news summaries, Q&A, gr 7-12 based on @NewsHour.
We love having classes co-write these stories w/ us. We help edit & give a byline to your class! DM, if interested! #worldgeochat

Everything about @Newseum@NewseumED is amazing! I only wish they'd open a Chicago campus! That museum is my favorite in DC - and that says something! #worldgeochat
Students had to learn to agree to disagree. The discussion taught them that many views exist throughout the world. Encourage everyone to try to speak with a class outside the US #worldgeochat
A4 I present several articles from a variety of sources along the spectrum and ask students to assess bias, looking at issues of vocabulary/diction, imagery, titles, emotional appeals, and more. We're creating our own media-bias chart! #worldgeochat
#worldgeochat A4 https://t.co/FdCGGPshi8 My State provides schools with access to the SC Virtual Libraries that has an Opposing Viewpoints Issues tool. They have opposing viewpoint on literally everything. From the Middle East to @iamcardib vs. @NICKIMINAJ
Same here. I could live in Google Earth for days (you should have seen me fanboy’ing it up with the GE team during the NCGE2017 in New Mexico.....) #worldgeochat

A4 I present several articles from a variety of sources along the spectrum and ask students to assess bias, looking at issues of vocabulary/diction, imagery, titles, emotional appeals, and more. We're creating our own media-bias chart! #worldgeochat
a4 we also adopt a NewsELA-like approach by changing vocabulary or providing context clues to bland words to see how they affect bias/coverage #worldgeochat
A5: Include components on assignments in which they need to share the material with a family member and record their thoughts on the matter. In addition I have shared stories on my classroom Twitter feed.
#worldgeochat
A4: Following the money is never a bad idea. Who or what funds a news source, what else do they fund, is there a pattern? I’m looking at you, #edtech. #worldgeochat
Q5: I don't use my parents as much as I should. But I remember when I was in elementary school, parents came in and taught lessons on current events! They made the presentations and told the events like a story. #worldgeochat
A5 I always ask students if they have any friends or family in X place where we talk about the news. I just showed clips from the 2011 Japanese tsunami and I had a student whose uncle was there. #worldgeochat
#worldgeochat A5 That is tough! We are so polarized as a nation today that it is hard to meet in the middle. Try our best to give both sides and let students make own decisions.
A5 the @playfanschool Olympic challenge was a cool way to invite families into a regular activity and have friendly competition. I’m thinking maybe some election pick’em challenges with family submissions for the mid terms #worldgeochat
A4: This is a tough one especially when trying to teach Ss narratives but build on the idea of empathy, bias, & look at multiple accounts of a story where possible. Such an important question we need to ask ourselves too! #worldgeochat
it can be, to be sure, but it's still a useful starting point. one tool that's been great is to print the different lexile levels and ask students to detect what creates text complexity #worldgeochat
A5: Include components on assignments in which they need to share the material with a family member and record their thoughts on the matter. In addition I have shared stories on my classroom Twitter feed.
#worldgeochat
A5: We currently have a Dad messaging us on Facebook asking all sorts of questions about his daughters @playfanschool countries 😅🤓 We often get emails from parents like this, trying to help their students who are now talking about current events at home! #worldgeochat
One of the best things we did this summer was a workshop w/ Texas teachers at K12 Summer Institute. These teachers (several were humanities teachers, btw!) wrote 12 STEM current events lessons that we combined into one Daily News Story #worldgeochathttps://t.co/JdqxUIhlXq
A5
The only HW my Ss have most of the time is to talk about what we did in class that day.
But, I think I need to give them a sentence starter:
Today we talked about...
I think .... about that.
What do you think parental units?
#worldgeochat
A5 Can't say that I have. I used to send a @RemindHQ notice out on Fridays with the most popular story on The Week in Rap. Guess I will have to start doing that again. #worldgeochat
A5 Coming from area with low parent involvement I love to get parents to talk with Ss. I had dad talk about why they immigrated to the US, Muslim Mom come in to discuss wearing hijab, and some involved in BLM speak as well. If they know it is classmates family they usually ❤️it
A5 #worldgeochat I would put an APB at the beginning of the year asking if anyone wanted to share a personal story from their country of heritage. More difficult these days with the current political climate #worldgeochat
A5 we have a large number of recent immigrants and refugees in our community, so we do two projects:
1. Students research the family history of their own names, and this involves an interview with a family member who can explain ancestry, roots, origin, etc.
1/2
#worldgeochat
Q6: @facinghistory is a great tool to address those difficult topics! Even in LA @facinghistory can be used! Here's an image about the topics on their website! #worldgeochat
A2 #worldgeochat Anytime you can bring a topic to the personal and immediate, it becomes easier for students to connect to current events. I like to bring guests to the classroom or Facetime with them, so students can interact & engage. It makes it more real and meaningful 4 Ss.
A6
Lay out facts.
Acknowledge both (all) sides of the issue.
Ask critical question of each side.
Tell Ss to figure out where they fall on the topic.
#worldgeochat
A5 Not an answer, but perhaps a starting place for future conversations. We create a MyMap of birthplaces--green=student, blue=parent/guardian
red=grandparents
yellow=great grandparents
Add images & notes, but can't show those:) #worldgeochat
A5 2/2 students product PSA films around an issue related to immigration and include a video-interview (face and name blurred out) of the immigration experience someone in our community has had. powerful stuff. #worldgeochat
Agreed. When parents don’t feel like they can be honest about their stories in a building dedicated to learning and sharing of history, it is a sad day indeed #worldgeochat
A6 hardest thing for me to judge continuously. I feel like I have anywhere from 5-30 year olds in maturity level so the approach always seems to be completely wrong for a significant number of kids #worldgeochat
7A: I have found making sure that currents events is consistently done with some form of routine to be more effective than just sporadic doses.
#worldgeochat
7A: In addition modeling that you follow the news, showing excitement for the topics being examined and honoring multiple points of view is also key.
#worldgeochat
Q7: don't make it a HW Assignment. The kids who are already unmotivated to learn about current events, will resent it more. Make it an engaging small group activity! Or a debate simulation! #worldgeochat
A7 #worldgeochat
1. Jump in
2. Be a devil’s advocate
3. Use AT LEAST 4 different perspective new sources
4. Let student curiosity guide (in part) where to go.
A7 easy: get a FANschool account and start a league with your kids. Not convinced? Come to #NCSS2018 in Chicago November 30 and let me convince you in person #worldgeochat
A6 #worldgeochat lay down law early
1. You don't have to agree but you will respect their right to believe.
2. Honesty w/ personal feelings is important.
3.Supporting peers with personal involvement in issues is what we do.
4. If you wouldn't say it to Nana don't say it to class
Thank you all so much for joining us tonight! I know I learned a ton and I can way to use these new resources and strategies with my students! Thank you all for sharing!
#worldgeochat
Please join next week as we will be discussing tech tools and digital resources that you can incorporate into your social studies classroom.
#worldgeochat
A7 Challenge the ss to find current connections and reward it! Check cnn10 each morning and see if there is a relevant topic for the day.
Use this day in history and try to find something happening today that connects to the historical topic
#worldgeochat
Please join next week as we will be discussing tech tools and digital resources that you can incorporate into your social studies classroom.
