Good evening community! We are looking forward to talking about the ideas in Better Conversations by tonight.
I'm super excited to be discussing Better Conversations by on right now.
We will share out quotes from the beginning of the book to launch our discussion in a Q1 & R1 format for “Quote and Response”
But first, say hello and let us know where you are joining from tonight.
Excited to be discussing Better Conversations by tonight.
I'm Tammy from rural North Florida. I teach Computer Science.
I'm here! Trying to get my computer fired up, Drive loaded to help moderate, and back channels answered. Not multitasking well!
Hi - Jody joining from Quebec, Canada, eager to begin discussion about Better Conversations
Hi Tammy!Would you say this is least pressure you've felt in a book group lately?Awesome choice for prof & personl dev
Welcome, Jody! So glad you are joining us tonight.
Most definitely! Read at my own pace. Share my thoughts. Great choice for growth. https://t.co/qbhQPVohuO

Thank you so much for joining us, Jody!
We are definitely spinning the plates tonight, right? So glad we are tackling this together!
Looking forward to it, although have only read chapter 1 so far.
This is why we co-moderate! We need each other! ! https://t.co/Cx3U9JbveN

Even if you haven't read the book, you can still join the conversation. Let's talk about the big ideas of Better Conversations.
I think that's just about where all of us are, too. No pressure, self-pace, focus on ideas that matter to you!
There is so much just in chapter 1! It's packed! I read it 2x and want to read it again.
absolutely! It's a read and reread kind of book for sure.
Hi Jody! Glad you could join us tonight!
Even if you haven't read any of the book, if you are lurking let us know you're there. :-)
Yes, Really appreciate that I have such a good idea where each of the upcoming chapters is heading
Hi, Lisa from central Florida jointing the convo.
We were talking about this in the Voxer group. Love those graphic overviews to the chapters!
Hi Lisa! Welcome and thanks for joining us!
Welcome, Lisa! So happy you are here.
I am lurking and haven't read the book...
Yes! Am tempted to make sketchnotes of the chapters using the flowcharts as frameworks
Not a worry, Ashley! We are focusing on sharing some big ideas & having organic convo around them.
Ooo! Love this idea! https://t.co/bDVo0CrJY6

Cool! If you do, please consider sharing with our community.
Cool! If you do, please consider sharing with our community.
I happen to know this is a book you would LOVE to read.
I haven't read it yet, but am thinking about my goals for this year and thought I'd gain some insight.
Yes, if I do, I will certainly share with and beyond
Our first quote is coming up in a minute here. Just tag your responses with and R1, R2 etc.
Goal of better convos & ways to do that goes beyond just one book - add your thoughts
If you and other colleagues recommend it, that's all I need! Plus I'm a fan of !
1 thing I really like about this book is the encouragement to take ownership of 1 habit of Better Conversations.
YES! I appreciated the "start small" approach as well. Much more manageable.
"Better conversations...heal...restore." Love that.
R1: This is so true. We spend so much time looking at our devices & not each other. We need to spend time with each other.
R1 In part, it is the too many ways to connect & share that fragment our ability to focus , listen & make convo meaningful
There's a huge difference between talking and having a conversation.
Such an important idea in our current cultural climate! https://t.co/qCvw6ZEoaA
"Better conversations...heal...restore." Love that.
Another book to add to my list!
Aren't we in need of that more than ever in our communities?Potential for change=huge tho convos might be small
R1 I believe that whatever convo we have it needs to be authentic. It can't be forced & we can't force S or Ts to participate.
Yes and the pace of the multiple platforms discourages depth sometimes. How do we work around this?
R1 It is possible to have authentic connection via digital means, but takes effort, not just posting and retweets
Absolutely. So much can happen through one conversation. It's pretty incredible.
So true! We need to take the RISK and get out of our comfort zones and have REAL TALK.
https://t.co/s9DANUpzA5
There's a huge difference between talking and having a conversation.
R1: Think of the impact we can have on our Ss if we model Better Conversations to them, then they can impact the world!
Lisa, this is such a good point. There must be some mutuality & sometimes accepting non-participation is ok.
Very true! We need to make the effort and be sincere about it. https://t.co/ExAFQG5aBc
R1 It is possible to have authentic connection via digital means, but takes effort, not just posting and retweets
We need to decide which conversation we are having, to online one or the in-person one and give it our attention
Engaging vs. broadcasting to audiences. Indeed!
R1 In many ways, online convos can break isolation in rural areas when there is no in-person access to like-minded individuals
Loving the conversation about conversing in digital spaces. I think applying this book to those places will be fascinating.
Jody--we SO believe in that here. has potential to reduce isolated/silenced experiences https://t.co/WFnSjdMV0M
R1 In many ways, online convos can break isolation in rural areas when there is no in-person access to like-minded individuals
Here comes the next quote.
R1 is where real conversation takes place or dms on Twitter. Better to communicate in those arenas
Hi . I wish I could check in with you, but I am driving to OKC tonight. I'll read your chat with interest.
This book is causing me to reflect on so many areas of communication and implications on them... https://t.co/LMPBNYRVj1

Thank you so much, Jim. We would love your feedback. The book is resonating with so many of us here in .

Hi . I wish I could check in with you, but I am driving to OKC tonight. I'll read your chat with interest.
Hello everyone ! I just got a copy of the Better Conversations book and already intrigued.
Hey Justin. I can appreciate that for sure. Have had some gr8 disc threads here too.
Drive safely! And check in when you can! You've inspired lots of good discussion that will continue!
Howdy, Polly! Thanks for joining us! Wisco represent! ;)
R2 beliefs are full of bias and perspective. Conversations help us strengthen or abandon them.
R2 If what we do starts with what we think, we must confront deep, unconscious beliefs before any change can happen
Hi Polly! It really does catch you from the very beginning. So much to think about!
Def feeling this in larger societal convos. Hoping books like this can push us toward gr8r understanding
The character count definitely is a challenge with twitter.
Can conversations help us change beliefs that we are unwilling to admit that we hold?
This is so key. Love that Knight quotes Duhigg re: habit-changing efforts. It is do-able!
Oh yes.
If you are honest and trust group. If not then nothing will help. https://t.co/gFJFerO3B3
Can conversations help us change beliefs that we are unwilling to admit that we hold?
The blend of research and narrative in Better Conversations shows that the work is solid.
The next quote is related to the beliefs we might consider in shifting our conversations.
Often we don't listen and convos get derailed fast. We need to be more thoughtful/intentional. https://t.co/UySwNY6Nlq
Def feeling this in larger societal convos. Hoping books like this can push us toward gr8r understanding
and Knight integrates and honors other amazing thinkers with this work.
True conversations are a give and take between the participants.
Reading Better Conversations with online summer book discussion. Possible book for team read. Have you read it?
Be ACTIVE listeners...not PASSIVE in conversations.
I appreciate how Knight challenges us to manifest these beliefs in our practice by observing ourselves.
Life-giving conversations...WOW...I have never thought of conversations this way. Love that concept!
Is anyone game for recording some of their convos for self-reflection?
R3 I think these are where people will see in video the inconsistencies between what they think they believe & actual behaviour
so very much hope in that, I think. Made me think about conversations where a power-over dynamic killed my hope.
I admit, this idea scares me a bit. I know I should do it, but I'm not ready yet! https://t.co/nFd1Vyh5RO
Is anyone game for recording some of their convos for self-reflection?
exactly. The difference between "I thought I..." and "I actually..."
I want to do this. I have to have a trustworthy partner. I wonder if a GHO (on air) would work? https://t.co/tJGgROuMRh
Is anyone game for recording some of their convos for self-reflection?
I know! And asking others to participate might be challenging. Could be major game-changer though?
Interesting social experiment to pull out phone & ask if people mind if you record your convos
I'm willing to test it and see. We could do some practice runs together around some scenario conversations?
I think that is part of the beauty & power of better conversations: even in coaching self, you need others.
Yes, I'd be willing to try that out. https://t.co/9wnhjlcWjl
I'm willing to test it and see. We could do some practice runs together around some scenario conversations?
Listen and silent are made of the same 6 letters...
Next thing you know, we'll be seeing Periscopes of conversations so others can discuss :)
definitely would depend on nature&topic of convo 4 sure! Intention is good, but still awkward!
Now, that's another idea.
actually not a bad idea! Lots of potential there. Could create models for others to learn from?
Now that might be pretty cool! https://t.co/eBPQEoH40r
Next thing you know, we'll be seeing Periscopes of conversations so others can discuss :)
Ok, I admit I've been lurking & haven't read the book. Am intrigued. Are we talking difficult convos like race & inequity?
We absolutely can and should be. Here comes a quote we pulled related to this from Ch1 Thanks for joining us Becca
R4 Saying you believe everyone is equal is very different than practical behaviour to back this up, no matter the position
R4 I think equality & respecting autonomy starts in the very basic transactions of convos. Potential is there. Awareness=key!
Challenging when realize this means students and teachers are equal - one thing T2T, another T2S
Some times I feel like I'm retweeting & liking tweets more then I'm adding original thought to because so many smart people!
This goes along with my training today "Know who you are" Open ourselves to see other perceptions.
Wow This hour has flown. I think we truly have found a book that will fuel lots of thought, dialog & reflection this summer.
Just need to look at it as listening more than you talk - it can be a positive!
I'll get the book and be back then! https://t.co/RiouGLQi9N
Then we encourage you to read with us and join us again in 2 weeks for more conversation here w/ :)
We are throwing out the idea to be about halfway through the book (but no pressure!) in two weeks.
In 2 weeks we will be back for more power chat about Better Conversations.
Halfway in 2 weeks sounds good to me - enough pressure to keep moving without too much to kill enjoyment
