Mike Denault, 1st year Supt at Summersville GS in Mt. Vernon. In my case, I am the only new staff to the district. I’ve utilized my July newsletter to introduce myself to staff and community so that would get to know a little more about me before our we start school. #suptChat
Hello #SuptChat! I'm Dale Fisher and I'm the Asst. Supt. for HR in Deerfield 109. We welcome new staff by taking them on a guided bus tour of the community. We include a number of fun stops that helps them contextualize the area in which they will be working.
WHERE ARE ALL MY SUPTS?!?!!?!!?!?!?!!?!!?!? Less thank 5 mins people...stop moving papers from one side of the desk to the other and GET HERE!!!!! #Suptchat
David Frusher; High School Principal; ZBTHS District 126; Joining in from Lake County, IL. On boarding program, 3-day new teacher academy, teacher institute day PD & luncheon. As a leader, I am available for any staff member at any time. #suptchat
A1 #suptchat I join and participate in local, regional, statewide and national associations like @IllinoisASA@AASAHQ to develop my leadership ability--I also blog, write articles & books and do statewide, national and international training to sharpen my saw @NESLI_AusNZ
Q1: #FutureReady Continuous learning plays a big role my development. Constantly reading new material written by other supts. I also learn from my building leaders. Also there is a lot of self-reflection. #suptchat
Kim Lohse, Director of Tech (aspiring superintendent) in Addison D4. We welcome our new staff at orientation w/ some fun activities & do a pretty exciting intro at Institute Day! New to #suptchat
What’s up #suptchat?!?!!? My name is Joe. I’m the Supt in Fall Creek, WI. Home of the Crickets. Our people crush it. Every. Day. Love them. Looking forward to the chat!!! #gocrickets
Jonathan Tallman, Supt from Red Bud, an amazing town in SW IL. We welcome new staff by empowering them & letting them know that 1. They are hired to make our entire district better, not just fit in 2. Connect & model personal growth to Ss 3. Always put students first. #SuptChat
A1: @DrHayter says that to be world class you have to rub elbows with world class. Seek out others to learn with and from the best. Twitter, Voxer, read, visit. #suptchat
A1: Being and staying involved. I try to immerse myself in anything that will keep me relevant and at the forefront of #FutureReady innovation. #suptchat
A1 #SuptChat I Develop my own #leadership style by #listening, building #relationships, learning from others, reflecting, and learning from mistakes so I can situationally lead, collaborate and communicate.
A1: Personally, we try and focus as much as we can on our goals, vision and big picture, which helps maintain a focus and drive. Looking at how I grow my own leadership abilities, I try to empower others to work towards these goals while following their own passions. #SuptChat
A1: I try and read about leadership and attend as many quality pd opportunities as I can. Just returned from the IASA Aspiring Superintendents Academy. Beyond that I just try and continually ask for feedback and reflect on my current practice. #Suptchat
Good evening, #SuptChat colleagues. Dan Frazier @DanielLFrazier, superintendent of Belmond-Klemme in Belmond, Iowa. We will start the year with a big tech training with Jeff Utecht @jutecht as our guest
I simply choose to stay unfinished. I view my job as a social scientist. I watch and study people so I can better lead and create schools that serve our ever changing society. #SuptChat
A1- It’s important to be open to new ideas, even if it pushes you out if your comfort zone...Listening and learning from others. I read books, blogs, and articles to stay current, but people and kids are most inspiring. #suptchat
A1: When we understand what we actually value in life...we understand what's our priority vs. what's just an option. This quote says it BEST. Value who values YOU. #suptchat@jonbartelt@Joe_Sanfelippo
A1: As @E_Sheninger and I wrote in #LT8Keys, effective leadership is by ACTION, NOT by Title. #FutureReady leaders model that which they look to transform in their school or district. #Suptchat
A1: I look at both short and long range goal setting opportunities to enhance my professional growth. Open mindedness about where I am lacking is the easiest way to determine what needs to be brought into the fold regarding my leadership style. #suptchat
Q1: As a #FutureReady leader I have scheduled every Thursday to be in buildings for a minimum of 3 hours so I can learn from @ccsd93 teachers and students. #suptchat
A1: I have to pull back from trying to do too many things at once. We can read and read and read and read or listen and listen and listen and listen…but when we try to put in too many things we get nothing done. #suptchat
A1: Learn from others. Read leadership books, follow leaders from all sectors on social media, participate in twitter chats, & attend conferences & leadership academies. I was very fortunate to attend the 2018 IASA Aspiring Superintendent Academy. Highly recommend it! #suptchat
A1: Reading, engaging with my #PLN and being intentional about building a network of amazing leaders to allow me to be pushed & developed into my best self #suptchat
Hey Superintendents, want some additional fuel for the fire to change? Check out @All4Ed's Graduation Effect for YOUR state and metro area here: https://t.co/XMR9moQn6H#Suptchat
Q2: #FutureReady leadership is about collaboration. What SPECIFICALLY have you done as a leader to encourage those around you to take risks? How do you continue to grow leaders in your area? #suptchat
Q2: #FutureReady I think other people have to see you take risks and fail before they know it is ok to fail. I encourage my staff to take risks. This allows your staff and future leaders to push the envelope and not be satisfied with the status quo.#suptchat
A1. A strong leader helps to build the capacity of a strong system of advocates, teacher leaders, and supports. We have this great strategy w/ ideas from @LASchools about helping to support teachers and system leaders implement effective change. https://t.co/3pFvlgA35o#suptchat
A1: Growing also requires balance. Still figuring this out but I’m not my best self and won’t be at my best for students if I don’t fill my cup investing time in my big self #suptchat
A2: Empowering teachers in the classroom leads to great opportunities for students. I specifically encourage employees to think out of the box, be creative and to try new things during conversations that I’ve had with them as a part of the evaluation process. #Suptchat
A2 #SuptChat I encourage others to take risks by modeling and sharing resources that inspire a GrowthMindset. I help continue growing leaders by collaborating, supporting and encouraging teachers to share successful or helpful ideas.
A2 #suptchat I encourage those around me to take risks like Join Twitter & participate in #suptchat
I grow leaders in your area? One example is the @IllinoisASA Aspiring Superintendent Academy with @npolyak
A2: I encourage and support teachers to take risks and incorporate new lessons, projects, and activities in their classrooms to enhance student learning. I encourage others to study educational leadership and I volunteer to serve as their internship mentor. #suptchat
A2: We get behaviors model and tolerate. Bottom line is that if your words and behaviors do not give people permission to take risks then we create a culture of compliance. #suptchat
Q2: I try to find our teacher leaders who are trying new things and ask them to teach at our #D93Innovates Tech Academy about the topic. #FutureReady#SuptChat
A2: Not being afraid to share my own failures with staff. At first... it was difficult to be vulnerable. But, they saw it as being human. Taking risks means failing forward. #Suptchat
Q2: I am working hard to serve as a leader for HR colleagues in the IASPA and AASPA organizations. I look at every situation and determine if there is room for improvement. This has led to a lot of sharing with other districts and our own #IASPAchat to discuss. #suptchat
A1: Reading articles/books, joining in PLN like #suptchat, my district signed me up for #launchIPA which has been very resourceful, & seeing challenges as an opportunity to improve situations
A2: We constantly promote a growth mindset and the benefits of risk and even more so, failure. Nothing promotes this concept more than simply modeling it ourselves. #FutureReady#SuptChat
A2: Providing an environment where failure is the norm not the outlier - we’re doing an activity at our institute day to continue to develop this culture #suptchat
A2: When leaders know what it feels like to risk take they let those in their care risk take. If you as the leader don’t take a risk and be transparent about it how are you going to ask others to do it. Same hold true in the classroom. #suptchat
A2. Model taking risks and failure. Admitting what I’m personally working on in my learning. When someone has an idea encourage them to just go for it and try! #suptchat
A2. Encourage risk taking and model it. Current example is our move to Personal Learning Plans (PLP) for every professional employee. I strongly believe the risk in allowing choice is worth it, but not afraid to adjust if necessary!#Suptchat
We started using Passion Projects for Adults as our PD model 5 years ago…to see where it has gone is beyond crazy. The things that our adults come up with would absolutely blow your mind. And…to see it convert to kids…wow. #suptchat
Q3: #FutureReady leadership is about rethinking, redesigning, and transforming learning spaces. How are you helping to push these initiatives forward? #SuptChat
Hey #supts! If you're on now, head over to the Supt chat where they are discussing great questions as educators head back for the 2018-2019 school year! #suptchat
A2. @greeleyschools developed a culture of experimentation to allow educators and leaders the room to take risks in their practice to investigate tools and content that worked best for their classrooms and students. https://t.co/tYQmC91gUX#suptchat
#Suptchat Vic Shandor York County Schools in VA. We welcomed our leaders back in an energized session filled with success stories about our students.. we also enjoyed @Joe_Sanfelippo
A3 #FutureReady leadership is about rethinking, redesigning, and transforming learning spaces. How are you helping to push these initiatives forward? Major library renovation work in past district as one example #SuptChat
A3- Rethinking learning spaces is as important as rethinking how we treat, value and appreciate those iIMPORTANT to us. We cannot take something SO SIMPLE for granted in our every day lives because if we do, we're virtually IGNORING something so simple- yet so POWERFUL. #suptchat
A2: Encourage excellent teacher leaders such as @Nikki_TeachesEL to pursue her leadership degree/journey & remind others that dreams come true & making a difference happens when you take risks #suptchat
A3: Computer labs have turned into student lounges with powering stations for our 1:1 environment, couches, lounge chairs, benches, balls...just about anything other than rows of desks is visible in many of our classrooms and encouraged! #FutureReady#SuptChat
A3: Excited to report that this is a district goal and we will be forming a group to start to study this area this fall! Realizing it’s not so much about stuff as it is about purpose. #suptchat
A3: Redesigning learning spaces is NOT ABOUT being pretty for Pinterest. It's about how design impacts the brain (learning sciences). Helping people understand the WHY is key. #Suptchat
A3: #Engage109 has been rethinking learning spaces for the last five years. We have been trailblazing in this area and the results have been outstanding. Our classrooms, STEM labs, Fine Arts and Maker Spaces have all been enhanced to best support learning and growth. #suptchat
A3: District wide Maker Learning campaign. Introducing 6 different spaces @MMSMiddies with 6 different themes to give students voice and choice. #suptchat#MiddieRising
A3: In our digital media center and classrooms, we have flexible seating arrangements. In our project based learning setting, we have mobile tables, chairs, and couches, plus floor seating, for students to use with other group members. I highly support these. #suptchat
A3) We see the value in #futureready and are cognizant on how it needs to be implemented. We are determined to grow, learn, and move onward in a way that students are the central focus of what we do. #suptchat
Supts!!!! You need to talk to @ShandorVictor about his leadership academy for York County. I was there yesterday…the energy was ridiculous. We’re better together…reach out to him. #suptchat
#Suptchat Vic Shandor York County Schools in VA. We welcomed our leaders back in an energized session filled with success stories about our students.. we also enjoyed @Joe_Sanfelippo
A3 We've made a huge push toward flexible seating. Every class has transformed in some way. Thanks in large part to our Meridian Ed Foundation and @MCUSDSupe for supporting our push. #WeAreMCUSD#suptchat
A2: Risk-taking looks different for different people. Defining risk and teasing out that truth really helps. Protocols from the @schoolreforminc help. Here's one specific experience: https://t.co/cWrn3qeMll#suptchat
A3. Library redesign, but we are also in the midst of a building feasibility study where we are focused on educational programs and our One To World vision. Spaces are being designed around those ideals! #Suptchat
A3: Redesigning spaces is really about student ownership and agency. Buying fancy furniture while leveraging teacher-centric practices, does... well, NOTHING to change the student experience. #Suptchat
A3: letting people see the vision and steps gradually and how it can impact and grow them with real support. They cant be scared or forced into creativity or innovation. It's about creating safe risks!#suptchat
#FutureReady by first observing and building trusting relationships because the only way to build trust is to never break it (learned that from @mikelubelfeld class & will never forget it! By doing research & have the team be part of the initiatives #suptchat
A3: I need help here…honestly. I know what I am supposed to say (bc I wrote the question), but I struggle with what these spaces should actually reflect outside of flexibility. Ask 10 kids how they like to learn…7 different answers. Tough to grasp. #suptchat
A4: When it comes to visioning, it's much like hiring. I'll reshare the following four blurbs which are absolutely applicable. #suptchat
1. Surround yourself with
smart people
2. Listen to them
3. Get out of their way
4. Leverage their expertise
Q4: #FutureReady leadership is about fostering relationships to support school culture and vision. Who is included in this visioning and how do you empower those in the organization? #suptchat
A4: Everyone should be involved. We were fortunate to collect feedback from all stakeholders this last spring. Not surprisingly, our kids provided some really awesome feedback for us! #suptchat
A4 #suptchat visioning includes parents, teachers, support staff, students, Board members, admins, civic folks, users of the schools, non-users of the schools --empowerment through voice, agency and feedback loop
A3 had plans to create open spaces into collaborative cafe style seating. We had to build two classrooms instead. Weeding library and have blueprints to create a common learning space for different purposes #suptchat
A3 part two ... learning spaces that represent "cool, engaging, comfortable, safe, like a rec room or basement or arcade" as opposed to a sterile prison like environment #suptchat
A3: I need help here…honestly. I know what I am supposed to say (bc I wrote the question), but I struggle with what these spaces should actually reflect outside of flexibility. Ask 10 kids how they like to learn…7 different answers. Tough to grasp. #suptchat
A4: If you're going to leverage culture to make the vision a reality, a significant investment in relationships, based on trust, is imperative. We empower those in our organization by giving them voice, & encouraging risk...there is no growth without it. #FutureReady#SuptChat
A3: I need help here…honestly. I know what I am supposed to say (bc I wrote the question), but I struggle with what these spaces should actually reflect outside of flexibility. Ask 10 kids how they like to learn…7 different answers. Tough to grasp. #suptchat
A4: Everyone must be part of the process! It's not a shared vision if multiple stakeholders aren't involved. It's important to have a vision, but it must be meaningful to & supported by the community. The heart of this is relationships, communication and collaboration. #suptchat
A4: Having a clear, systemic vision is key to success, yet it's not about the Superintendent. Leveraging building level leaders, great teachers, visionary students, and community members are vital. #Suptchat
A4: Through PLC’s, empower all staff members to play a key role in ensuring we all shape our vision on a daily basis. Our student government and parent organization are very active. All are supported by having them at the table when decisions are discussed and made. #suptchat
A1 #SuptChat I Develop my own #leadership style by #listening, building #relationships, learning from others, reflecting, and learning from mistakes so I can situationally lead, collaborate and communicate.
A4) The Supt and central office have nothing to do with this process. It’s all about meeting people where they are and having them grow, learn, and move onward. #suptchat
A2. Organized and facilitated a quarterly professional learning community of superintendence from around the state to engage in a variety of in basket activities #Suptchat
A4 Ideally all should be involved in the visioning. We will have a very intentional effort to tie our vision and mission to all that we do this year. One vision. One target. Lots of arrows. #suptchat
A4: A focus on student voice is critical. Creating ongoing settings to engage students is critical to inspire a vision. This year trying to engage 1 classroom for the entire year to engage Classroom Voice. @HighviewTweets#suptchat#MiddieRising
A4: D13 recently completed visioning at each school facilitated by principals and including student voice. Produced awesome results and the process was replicated for District wide strategic planning #suptchat
A4: Having a clear, systemic vision is key to success, yet it's not about the Superintendent. Leveraging building level leaders, great teachers, visionary students, and community members are vital. #Suptchat
A4: Communication is key! Your #schoolpr pros are the conduit to foster relationships within the schools and out in community to ensure that you get the appropriate input for & ownership of a clear vision & strong culture. #suptchat#k12prchat
A1: I have to pull back from trying to do too many things at once. We can read and read and read and read or listen and listen and listen and listen…but when we try to put in too many things we get nothing done. #suptchat
Q5: #FutureReady leadership is about implementing personalized professional learning opportunities for your district. How are you ensuring that the opportunity to grow goes beyond those learners ages 4-18 in your organization? #SuptChat
A4: #FutureReady Include anyone & everyone that supports the students: teachers, parents, Ss, community members/leaders. You empower people by including them and building positive relationships (learning that from @drkevinbrussell ) #suptchat
I think this such an important and often overlooked distinction. I’m glad that I have mentors who provide both, but being intentional about being coached is huge. #Suptchat
A5: Create individualized improvement plans for staff utilizing the data provided through the evaluation process. As a super, be sure the resources are there and the process is solid. #Suptchat
A5: We were able to offer some choice and self-directed PD this year. Staff chose a tech tool from a menu and spent the time learning how to use it. The format worked well and was well-received. #suptchat
A5: We have Instructional Growth Plans within our high school, and promote personalized professional learning via a PLN. That being said....this is one area of #FutureReady leadership our district has opportunities to grow indeed! #SuptChat
Visioning is as successful as the behaviors once the process is concluded. Leaders must speak and act a vision into existence or they just become cute slogans. #suptchat
A4. All stakeholders must be repr when creating the vision. However, once the vision is established on paper the hard work begins. Vision message has to be immersed in the culture -it takes time. My “elevator speech” about our vision should be able to be shared by all! #suptchat
A5: Personalized professional development is not a one-time event. Job-embedded coaching is necessary to meet the unique needs of each adult in the district. #suptchat
A5: We are open to any creative opportunities that extend beyond the traditional grad courses (although we offer those as well). We have led the way on the aspiring academies for principals and also incorporated micro credentialing opportunities for staff as well. #suptchat
A5: For district institute days, we provide staff different PD sessions to select from. Encourage staff to attend conferences & workshops to grow professionally, & to come back & share with the entire staff. The train the trainer model has been very successful for us. #suptchat
A5- Embedding teacher learning goals into the evaluation process, and then empowering a teacher team to help initiate growth opportunities was very dynamic! #Suptchat
A5: D13 created online book chats for adult staff over summer along with “summer minis” which provides teachers with opportunities to create passion projects to implement in the coming school year. #suptchat
A5: As a Supt, how do you kick off the school year? What do those first few minutes look like? How are faculty meetings run? Inservice days? We can't expect teachers to make it personal for kids, if leaders don't model the way. #Suptchat
A5: Listen to staff and offer options for learning. Opt in example for those who are most passionate...Partnering with @ISTE this year to bring the new ISTE Educator Certification to staff. #suptchat#MiddieRising
Our welcome back letter for all teachers and principals. I don’t care what your APPR score is. You are more than a score....I trust and believe in you. You are a professional and you will be treated as such. #GoPatMed#WeTrustEducators 🔴⚫️
A5: Out biggest challenge is to get our #WeAreMCUSD people to dream big - for themselves and advocate our their own behalf. Great leaders help this by seeing people for greater than they currently are. #suptchat
A5: As a Supt, how do you kick off the school year? What do those first few minutes look like? How are faculty meetings run? Inservice days? We can't expect teachers to make it personal for kids, if leaders don't model the way. #Suptchat
A2. Encourage risk taking and model it. Current example is our move to Personal Learning Plans (PLP) for every professional employee. I strongly believe the risk in allowing choice is worth it, but not afraid to adjust if necessary!#Suptchat
A5: We were able to offer some choice and self-directed PD this year. Staff chose a tech tool from a menu and spent the time learning how to use it. The format worked well and was well-received. #suptchat
I kick it off with ONE word: GO.
GO do your magic.
GO help students succeed.
GO help people where they are.
GO. We will help you with what you need to succeed.
#suptchat
Q6: #FutureReady leadership is about creating community partnerships that contribute to the progress of your district. How do you connect your district to the community it serves? #suptchat
A5: As a Supt, how do you kick off the school year? What do those first few minutes look like? How are faculty meetings run? Inservice days? We can't expect teachers to make it personal for kids, if leaders don't model the way. #Suptchat
A5. We’ve had job embedded coaches in every school for seven years, tremendous impact by supporting classroom teachers with resources, modeled lessons, co-teaching, side-by-side collaborative planning. Coaches are a part of the team, highly respected, in the trenches. #Suptchat
Q5: #FutureReady leadership is about implementing personalized professional learning opportunities for your district. How are you ensuring that the opportunity to grow goes beyond those learners ages 4-18 in your organization? #SuptChat
A6: The best way to create community partnerships that contribute to the progress of your District is by being present, approachable and willing to engage. If groups know we will jump right in with them, amazing things can happen. Service, jobs, resources & more. #SuptChat
A6: Broken record here, but watch for our back to school video in a couple days. It takes a community for a district to thrive, and we found some great members to help out. #suptchat
Treat PD like genius hour. Then…instead of having them turn in a reflection to you that simply states what they think you want to hear run a staff street fair where they demonstrate their learning to their peers. Then live stream it. Win. #suptchat
Q6: #FutureReady leadership is about creating community partnerships that contribute to the progress of your district. How do you connect your district to the community it serves? #suptchat

@Joe_Sanfelippo@npolyak Wow! #suptchat is racing tonight -- great guest host of course #GoCrickets Learning so much from our many participants representing 12 US states (at least) and British Columbia in Canada!
A6: Have several parent universities throughout the school year. Hosted a Hispanic Heritage Evening event with food, dancing, and plays. Our Interact and Key clubs are very active in the community. Students participate in on the job internships. #suptchat
A6: Working with local businesses, service groups, and faith-based organizations helps our students, helps their organizations and strengthens the community as a whole! #suptchat
A6: We created a position 8 years ago called Coord. for Communication and Community Relations. @cateked went out of her way to identify opportunities for the schools to connect with the community. ~75% of constituents don't have kids in the schools. Find value for them! #suptchat
A6: Thankful for all of our partnerships. Challenging ourselves to establish more industry partnerships to increase authentic learning experiences for students. @NTEEnergy#suptchat#MiddieRising
A6) this is all about meeting people where they are. If you are not taking the time to help those grow, learn, and move onward, you’re wasting time. #suptchat
A6: Schools no longer exist as a brick and mortar for educating a prescriptive age range. We must be a community partner and member. We have partnered with our community to work to provide an outlet where they can share their passions. #Suptchat
Did you know? #FutureReady now has FIVE strands (District Leaders, Principals, Tech Leaders, Librarians, and Instructional Coaches). More here: https://t.co/uliKzM7dZZ#Suptchat
A6: I believe the number one issue today with school communities is... TRUST. I also believe the number one asset schools have for their community is... TRUST. Build it through relationships, transparency, and collaboration. #Suptchat
A5: Out biggest challenge is to get our #WeAreMCUSD people to dream big - for themselves and advocate our their own behalf. Great leaders help this by seeing people for greater than they currently are. #suptchat
I encourage all teachers teachers who they are and what they are passionate about. Then ask their students to do the same. Day 2 = rules. Imagine the student response to parents when they ask how the first day went. We did this last year and it was amazing!
This is so true, and something @LynnPanega does so well at #WeAreLakePark. It’s all about focusing on our staff, our students, our families and communities. If people fee energized and connected when we start, it only grows with our students. #suptchat
Incorporate students in the welcome! Bands, cheer leaders...The entire opening is filled with amazing stories/ videos... about the success of our students and how we connect with them and never give up on them. Make them cry and laugh show them the impact of their work!!
A6: We continuously emphasize the importance of sharing the amazing learning experiences had by our students on a daily basis via social media. It's a resource that we must all leverage to our advantage..Opens so many doors for conversations with our comm. #FutureReady#SuptChat
A5 I offered to buy our staff whatever PD book they want over the summer. We came together for Patio PD to talk about what we’re learning, ideas we want to work on individually and our admin team takes note of things our staff is encouraged to try. #suptchat
A6. Our campus is literally the center of our district. Buildings are always open for the community and we welcome all. Some of the best community conversations s had are with people who just stop in to see what’s happening in our schools. #suptchat
Q7: #FutureReady leadership is about transparency. In the absence of knowledge, people make up their own. How are you sharing your Superintendent (or other leadership) journey with your stakeholders? #SuptChat
A6. Our campus is literally the center of our district. Buildings are always open for the community and we welcome all. Some of the best community conversations s had are with people who just stop in to see what’s happening in our schools. #suptchat
A5 on opening day we welcome all new staff, recognize perfect or best staff attendance from previous year. Celebrate accomplishment and share our goals for new year. #Suptchat
A7: Ask for input, share what you learn and show what you are doing as a result of what you learn with regular updates utilizing various modes of communication including social media. #Suptchat
A7 #SuptChat I am sharing my leadership journey with my stakeholders by sharing via Twitter about different learning experiences, recommendations, and goals.
A6 #suptchat How do you connect your district to the community it serves? Social Media, Direct email, visits in person, civic engagement like @Rotary inclusion on planning like city, park district, other schools, Inspire..Innovate..Engage https://t.co/T3wCiDkqYa
A7 Selfishly loved traveling classrooms, snapping pics with students and posting my day online. Nothing better than connecting with that community! #SuptChat
A7: Good way to share with your public is through blog postings. About 100 supes now do so and you can find a directory of current supe bloggers on the AASA website, just updated with newbies. #SuptChat@jpgoldman#FutureReady
A6: #Engage109 supt @mcconnellaw just spent the day at the @Deerfield_IL Farmers Market to answer questions/get input/just chat. Visits to senior center, actively seek volunteers from local businesses to share in the classroom, admins join civic orgs... #suptchat
A7: Thanks to @Joe_Sanfelippo, We’ve been making a big effort to share our story through social media and other communications. This year we are launching a new communication app that we hope will also to continue to reach more stakeholders. #suptchat
A7: Good way to share with your public is through blog postings. About 100 supes now do so and you can find a directory of current supe bloggers on the AASA website, just updated with newbies. #SuptChat@jpgoldman#FutureReady
A7: Social media (obviously)! Also consider inviting realtors, legislators, elected officials, and others into your schools. Allow your students and staff to tell the real story about your schools! #suptchat
A7: Share my leadership journey through social media. School twitter feed and Facebook pages. Pictures with students and staff say a lot about my journey and passion for student success. I also talk about/share my journey with all stakeholders. #suptchat
A7. I tell our story to anyone who will listen. Also try to blog and plan to spin up our podcast again this year. Also twitter has been an amazing tool for all of us in the district to share our stories and allow others to see what we do day in and day out. #suptchat
A7: I utilize Twitter to share what I'm currently reading, a quote that moved me, research, sharing a great blog...but most of all I share with my PLN how I LEARN from my PLN. Also recognizing our amazing Ss and Ts and support staff by using #ProudSupt! #FutureReady#SuptChat
A6: We created a position 8 years ago called Coord. for Communication and Community Relations. @cateked went out of her way to identify opportunities for the schools to connect with the community. ~75% of constituents don't have kids in the schools. Find value for them! #suptchat
People are talking about you as the Supt…you have to know that. If you want to have a piece of that narrative, be willing to be transparent about your leadership. You don’t always have to be right…but you do have to be real. #suptchat
A7: We released a series of district videos on our vision with our stakeholders. Followed by a 12 part engagement series. Social media has been a great platform to continue sharing and celebrating our journey. #suptchat#MiddieRising
A7: Video and multimedia help a lot- same with the positive parts of social media. The more communication the better. But transparency is about honesty and integrity above all. Still the best policy! #suptchat
A6: (yes, I’m out of order) Bloomingdale is a @character60108 counts community and we coordinate student activities to help promote, assist, and support residents. #suptchat
A8: As a leader in the district, I try to get into schools when I can. Talking to kids and hearing from all staff helps me stay in touch (and gets me out of my boring, windowless office)! #suptchat
A8: We must never forget WHY we do what we do. Toxic school cultures are ADULT issues. Too often our egos, pride and fears get in the way of our kids so desperately need. #Suptchat#FutureReady
A8: I said this in my first admin interview and I stand by it still today. If a decision is not in the best interest of students, then it should not be a decision worth considering. #suptchat
A8 #suptchat How do you keep students at the heart of all your decisions as a Superintendent? ASK'EM https://t.co/0OFCksIjOg Include them in decisions - focus PD around learning #112Leads
A7:Mainly sharing the journey through twitter.I agree it's important to be transparent and vulnerable as it helps people relate to you & therefore trust you.I'm thinking of ways to create & incorporate educational videos on twitter to support & inspire teachers/leaders #suptchat
A8: I have our mission on the bulletin board in front of me in my office: "Educate, Encourage, Empower - Every Student, Every Day! When I struggle with a decision, it grounds me and guides me... every time. It truly is all about the student. #FutureReady#SuptChat
A7: All staff get a weekly Sunday evening email on the week ahead. BOE get Fri notes. This year, community will get a 2x monthly blog post. Twitter. I don’t run from areas we need to do better. We believe in a collaborative approach in @EMSD37 and all need the info. #suptchat
A8: I'm proud to say we are going into Year 3 with students on our local School Board. They collaborate with the elected members to make decisions that are best for kids. #suptchat
A8: If your strategic plan is designed correctly and you funnel all decisions through that plan, then students and learning should be central to all Superintendent and BOE decisions. #suptchat
A8: First of all…think about the last time you asked a student what they wanted/needed and took action on that commentary? Be honest…you don’t have to share it here…but be honest. They have to have a voice…even if it’s not the direction we would have chosen. #suptchat
A7 I tried something with our BOE. We presented about student behavior data and gave them a flyer so they could help spread the word. Lots of perspectives not always facts. Elected community members share the word. Im going to keep trying to see how it goes! #suptchat
A8. I spend a lot of time talking with students about their school experience. The more I’m in tune with them the more I can share with others as we make decisions. This year I hope to up my game and spend more time talking with teachers and students. #suptchat
A8: As an educational leader, every decision that I make I ask, “What is the impact that this is going to have on our students?” & “Is this what is best for our students?” Get input from many stakeholders. #suptchat
Hey Superintendents - are you (or your team) heading to one of this year's FREE #FutureReady Institutes? Some are already waitlisted. Don't wait to register! More here: https://t.co/oK3D32129E#Suptchat
A8: Ss are always at the heart of what we do. We have to continue to think about our priority vs. our option and how we treat EVERYONE in the organization and in LIFE...What's your legacy? How will YOU be remembered??? "Words, time and opportunities never return..." #suptchat
A8 Check your mission/vision and see if Students are clearly at the core. If not, add. And then quit asking if you can afford to do something for Ss, but instead ask "Can we afford not to....?" #SuptChat
#suptchat A8 part 2 -- we'll be asking all students grades 3-8 to complete a Student Engagement Survey in English and in Spanish in October @HUMANeX@YesyMSanchez#112Leads
A8: Involving them in focus groups. In a K-8 district, you get the most authentic feedback from students in these conversations which is extremely helpful. #suptchat
Superintendents & school leaders -- we recently published a white paper, "Look Both Ways" that address 7 decisions leaders face when implementing system-wide change. Check it out for insights and ideas from other leaders to support your schools! https://t.co/rRZXioPEGF#suptchat
A8. Last year we also had students present their learning at every board meeting and plan to continue. This was so powerful for our board and everyone who attended. Our students do amazing things and the least I could do was provide a forum for them to share. #suptchat

Thank you @Joe_Sanfelippo, @npolyak and @mikelubefeld for facilitating another reflective and engaging #suptchat. I look forward to future chats and appreciate the collaborative learning.
A8 leaned at the #NPC18 that once a week to meet with random students and ask how are we doing, where could we do better, etc. committed to putting it on calendar for once a week! Share out with community. #suptchat
#suptchat is crushing it tonight. Conversations have to continue…but don’t be the “I remember we talked about it that one time” guy. Get it done. Provide time, resource, and opportunity for a new school experience…FOR ALL. We lead learning organizations…lead the learning.
A8: this is an area of focus this year. We have started to include our student voice on big district decisions but we must be intentional and gather their input in all areas. Kids are amazing, the honest feedback will help us grow! #suptchat
Be sure to join us on September 5, 2018 at the next #suptchat

A6. @HenryCountyBOE emphasizes communication & transparency with the community to help build momentum for district-wide changes and keep families & community members engaged. @TrailblazerD11 also has some great ideas on how to do this! Check out: https://t.co/ChAmuemBtZ#suptchat
Great work, people!!!!! Be Intentional, Open Doors, Build Staff…do that and everyone in the building will have an experience they will be more than happy to tell others about…that is how we change the narrative. Thanks @npolyak and @mikelubelfeld! Go get it, Supts!! #suptchat
