#UrbanEd chat is a twitter chat for educators. Topics relevant to the subject of urban education will be discussed, but all educators are encouraged to join the conversation. The chats will be moderated by Ben and Neil, founders of Engaging Educators and elementary school teachers in Detroit, MI.
A1: Equitable teaching practices are those that ensure that each Ss is receiving the education they need. That will vary among Ss depending on what is needed. #UrbanEdchat
A1: students receive what they need to be successful. It does not depend on what other students are getting. Everyone is different so let their light shine in their unique way. #UrbanEdchat

A1:
It means meeting our students where THEY are and giving what THEY need to be successful. There is no one size fits all... No magic pill. Its important because it helps insure all students are thought about and included in all lessons.
At least that my opinion... #UrbanEdchat

A1 Every student receiving what they need and deserve-unending opportunities to learn & thrive within the classroom, with conscience consideration of their individual needs, talents, strengths. #urbanedchat
A2:
If we approach our lesson design with it on our minds we will B more prone 2 try "something new" & not settle 4 what worked last time, or what we really like 2 do. It will provoke us to get out of the way and place the student back at the center of instruction. #UrbanEdchat

A3: In SS, it means telling the truth about history and pointing out the contributions of other cultures. Giving credit where credit is due and letting Ss see the truth. #UrbanEdchat
A3: culturally inclusive is making sure groups of individuals are not used as a “us and them” teaching tool but as a tool to teach the ACTUAL history, science, language, etc is people. #UrbanEdchat
A2 Sometimes we think Ss of a region, race or community aren't as smart...so we make the work less rigorous...our expectations are lowered #UrbanEdChat

A3: culturally inclusive in #earlychildhood means incorporating tangible multicultural topics throughout the year making sure the lessons and conversations are free of bias #UrbanEdchat
A4: Ts have to model it and recognize all the different cultures in their classroom. They then have to ensure that everyone feels included and respected. #UrbanEdchat
A4:
And interactive word wall where students are free to translate key vocabulary into their native tongue or language of heritage.
It means giving every1 a seat @ the table and modeling the respect we expect to be reciprocated. #UrbanEdchat
We in edu seem to judge before the evidence has been presented...then we make up our minds that they can only learn at a low level...then we teach to that level...smh 😔🤦🏼♂️ #urbanEdchat
Many times the definition of culture is mixed up with countries and stereotypes. It is important to understand the difference later before implementing into a classroom. #UrbanEdchat
A4 I always took the first week to go over rules, procedures, etc...then I started creating lessons where Ss had to learn about each other...sets a great time to start the year #UrbanEdChat
A5: addressing already “known” knowledge will create an environment with common knowledge and let the teacher know what misconceived notions students may have learned in their lifetime. #UrbanEdchat
A5: Drawing on what your Ss know makes them feel included and valued. Plus when you assume they don't know something because of cultural differences, you insult their intelligence. They lose respect for you and education overall #UrbanEdchat
A5: everyone has misconceptions, knowing those up front create an environment teachers are used to— data driven instruction. Taking the data of current knowledge to guide instruction. #UrbanEdchat

A5 Ss, Ts, and Admins begin with having conversations instead of being reactionary to uncomfortable situations or biases...don't ignore the elephant...have a discussion #UrbanEdChat
A5:
Because we don't know what we don't know... Build relationships with our students and converse with them. It's so important to validating the intelligence of our students and helps them buy-in our content and ed purpose as a whole. Never making assumptions... #UrbanEdchat

A6: from a positive view— at least they are trying focused intervention. From a more constructive view— cookie cutters in education never work. SEL is so intricate and detailed that one size does NOT fit all. #UrbanEdchat
A6: While there may be a "formula" you as the Ts can still work it to the benefit of what each Ss needs. You do what you have to do for them. Again, it's not a 'one size fits all'. Each Ss needs something different. #UrbanEdchat
A6: unless you truly get to know a student you do not know what they need. One student showing disruptive behaviors will probably be for a completely different reason vs another student. #UrbanEdchat
A6:
There is NO magic pill. I fear that a reliance on across the board instructional strategies are resulting in educators not knowing how to craft a lesson. Handicaping them and killing instructional creativity. Every student is not the same. They have diff names. #UrbanEdchat
Me personally have been a rebel (lol) so I would probably go outside of mandates to find what they need. I'm sure it land me in hot water but if they Ss are improving, I'll take the heat ;) #UrbanEdchat
A6 What happens to the days when all campus stakeholders had buy in to the campus? Yes programs do work, but what's the best thing? I shouldn't purchase a product or endorse something solely because it helps with only one segment of student population #UrbanEdChat
A7: always starting with a social identity wheel for each student and an implicit bias activity to help students understand why I am teaching them what I am #professor#UrbanEdchat
Oh my... I heard a man once say... Some people climb the ladder of success... Only to realize it was leaning on the wrong building.... Dr. D.Z. Cofield
#UrbanEdChat
A7: Assigning my students to write a lesson plan from a point of view often ignored in classrooms #professor I make think outside the box of eurocentrism #UrbanEdchat
A7:
Something as simple as when one person is talking all pencils are down and you face them...
Digging N2 data h finding readings on the level of Ss that still gives them the info that they need... sitting with a struggling student yet teaching the whole class. #UrbanEdchat
A7 Technology allows for us to experience all events in real time now...We checked out twitter feeds and reflected on events in Baltimore riots and Chicago shootings #UrbanEdChat
