Good morning, #satchat ! High school French teacher in Clover, SC -- near Charlotte. Can't wait for summer. No PL plans yet, but ready to start thinking about it now.
Hi Scott, I really admire the commitment your team has made to educators everywhere every Sat. #satchat really wakes me up and helps me to focus my professional efforts. Thank You!
A1: I try to read as much as possible over the summer. I also try to participate in a PD the district offers like curriculum writing or #ETTF ed tech task force to help plan PD for the school year. #satchat
HERE WE GO...
Q1: There may be snow on the ground but it's time to think about summer. Where does your own personal learning fit into summer time?
#satchat
So it goes ;) multiplying in time and effort for every draft. Revising a #memoir written as #litfic. An examination of identity, food, revolution, and the idea of self during the Arab Spring. A sort of wandering novel, takes place in N. Africa, Spain, Mid East #amediting#satchat
A1. Summer is a great time to get caught up on “PD liesure reading” - particularly all those longer educational books I might have not had the time to devote myself to during the school year. Fill your tanks with new ideas so you can be of better help when you return! #satchat
A1: My learning is personalized: I spend time reading professional books and children's literature, attend conferences, work with #cyberPD every July and connect through social media. #SATchat
A1: Time to reflect on what worked over the course of the school year and what growth areas we still have. The best way for me is through blogging and connecting with others! #satchat
A1 Summer learning usually includes attending a conference (this year it will be @NAESP & @myACBS), reading books more deeply, going to new places and getting unexpected inspiration, and having long conversations with my husband/co-author. #satchat
A1: My personal learning always fits into the early mornings. It's like a multivitamin...If I take it in the morning, I benefit from it throughout the day! #satchat
HERE WE GO...
Q1: There may be snow on the ground but it's time to think about summer. Where does your own personal learning fit into summer time?
#satchat
A1: I spend a lot of time over the summer attending conferences, presenting, leading workshops, etc. I also have time to read books, and connecting with my PLN in PERSON is the best part of summer!! #satchat
A1: I use summer to help “catch up” on any PD reading that’s been on my list. I also try to take advantage of any relevant workshops my district offers throughout the summer. Also a great time for some light research on personal topics of interest 👌🏼 #satchat
A1 Ann from Colorado Springs, 5th grade. Summer is when I can really dig in to learning deeply about things I’ve dabbled in. This summer: google classroom and gamification. #satchat
A1 My summer will be used to catch up on reading professional lit, visiting with other leaders, and continue to network with my PLN through Twitter. #satchat

Q1: There may be snow on the ground but it's time to think about summer. Where does your own personal learning fit into summer time?
#satchat
A1: Summer is a time to identify my own needs that can be addressed with PD, conferences or other resources to help me share for the next year. #Satchat
A1: Summer is when I have the most time to devote to professional learning. Includes state and national principal conferences, local planning sessions & lots of reading and reflecting! #satchat
A1: I’m in central office and work through the summer. A lot of my summer work involves improvements to the application I designed/support for providing teachers with data on their English learners. #satchat
A1b: My learning includes a look back at how our English learner application was used, requests people made, exploration into new options, and ways to make the tool more useful. I learn a lot about school needs and always learn something new related to coding and data. #satchat
A1: My PD in the summer is primarily reading while traveling. It is a great time to dive into professional books that challenge my thinking and motivate me for the year ahead. #satchat
A1:My schedule is more flexible in the summer which allows me to explore more creative professional learning opportunities. Book studies, online modules, webinars, research. #satchat
A1: workshops and conventions! Plus there’s always Twitter! But I really try to scale back during the summer to give myself time to refresh and rejuvenate so I don’t burn out. #satchat
A1: Summer is a great time to reflect on the past year and plan some innovative ideas! I like to spend some time creating new ideas to use with #edtech - plan wisely, be a risk taker! #satchat
A1 Summer = #patioPD Just starting to think about summer goals. Always includes lots of reflecting, reading, blogging, and planning. Would love to publish and draw up some new curriculum for my classes. #satchat

Q1: There may be snow on the ground but it's time to think about summer. Where does your own personal learning fit into summer time?
#satchat
A1: Edcamps galore! If you haven’t been to an edcamp, get yourself to one. I also am fortunate enough to work for @RutgersCESP where there is always research based, quality PD happening #shamelessplug#satchat

Q1: There may be snow on the ground but it's time to think about summer. Where does your own personal learning fit into summer time?
#satchat
A1: Summer is the time when I can fit in PD books, plan for the upcoming year. Our district also offers professional learning throughout the summer. In the blink of an eye it's the new school year again! :) #satchat
A1 summer is the perfect time for me to start leading professional learning. I’m hoping to tap into my passions of inquiry learning and ed tech #satchat
Just a reminder that at times you will see spam and inappropriate tweets. Here's a reminder on what to do and how to do it:
Essential #Twitter Features: Block and Report https://t.co/Epaj6nwdNd via @scottrrocco#satchat
A1: I catch up on books I’ve been eyeing during the year. First up is Ready Player One! Staying connected with my Twitter PLN also keeps me going. #satchat
A1: this will be a great summer as I will be getting married July 7...so I'll be learning there! I'll still be finding time to further myself academically through opportunities and reading throughout this summer. #satchat
#satchat A1: In the past, it's been grad classes for recert, curriculum writing, ed tech tool research & planning, session building for a future conference, French teacher conferences in fun places.

#satchat
A1: My personal learning always fits into the early mornings. It's like a multivitamin...If I take it in the morning, I benefit from it throughout the day! #satchat
A1 I read, revise, and renew in the summer. I adjust my curriculum, redesign my learning spaces, and attend conferences. I personally struggle NOT working, so I keep busy for my sanity! 😝 #satchat

Q1: There may be snow on the ground but it's time to think about summer. Where does your own personal learning fit into summer time?
#satchat
A1) My own personal learning fits into Summertime☀️, by reflecting on the previous year & planning next steps to #BecomeBetter - whether if it’s through reading, networking, PD, etc #satchat
Approach I take each year on summer learning: Chose an area of focus, research it & systematically connect with experts based on their results in the focus area. From those connected conversations, discover ways to improve your plans and practice. #satchat

@ScottRRocco, @wkrakower, @TheBradCurrie
A1: My summer PD involves me reading as much as I can so I can talk to my Ss about books, keeping up w/ Twitter chats, & attending my district PD offered in August for a refresher and new ideas! #satchat
A1: Social Media connections on Twitter & Facebook allow me to learn and share with peers, regardless of my location...unless I go too far North ;) #satchat
A1 Time to read, read and read! With a rising 1st grader this summer it will be easy to schedule reading time for all! Also, a chance to connect with others and continue passions I have! My newest interest #HyperDocs#satchat
A1. I also participate in a summer teacher fellowship with a local college and take courses such as Digital Storytelling, art in the classroom, STEM Ed, readers theater. #satchat
A1 Summer is when I can focus a bit more on my professional learning. I have a little more time. Webinars and twitter chats are a great way to develop professionally. Plenty of good books to try to dive into this summer too! #satchat

Q1: There may be snow on the ground but it's time to think about summer. Where does your own personal learning fit into summer time?
#satchat
A1 Love to pick a focus in summer and read, use my PLN w twitter chats, conferences if able, connect w local folks and reflect and refine practices for new school year. This time is gold because the rest of the school noise is quiet #satchat
A1 My summer learning included lots of reading, Twitter chats, Voxer chats and book studies, some conferences. It is a time to continue my learning in a more relaxed environment and at a more relaxed pace. #satchat
A1. For me summer is not much different. I’m always trying to find ways to learn. As much as conferences are amazing, they have become too costly. EdCamps have been essential. Also #cncting4kids and my PLN here. #Satchat
A1: I pick at least 1 book to read (hint it's a question coming up) go to at least 1 PD or EdCamp and learn something new with #edtech
And if lucky I'll give a presentation or two (this is part of our learning too) #satchat
Excellent point here! The summer conferences where I can meet with other school leaders from across the state & nation always reenergize me for the coming school year! #satchat
A1 I'm similar to you, Dee. I use the summer as a study time--always try to embrace a few new initiatives for the year ahead which gets me motivated and excited for new teaching/learning year. #satchat
A1- my professional learning in the summer is a large part taking the time to finally read some of the professional books that accumulate on my shelf all summer! #satchat
A1: a lot of great organizations, like @NJAET_org, have summer learning opportunities that I am signing up for. Summer also gives me time to travel to museums and do some reading. #satchat
A1. The summer will be time 2 drop anchor & reflect on the year--to solidify plans 4 next year. Also time 2 connect with other middle grades leaders & read. #satchat
A1: Approach I take each year on summer learning: Choose an area of focus, research it & systematically connect with experts based on their results in the focus area. From those connected conversations, discover ways to improve your plans and practice. #satchat
A1 Sadly an even deeper dive into school safety and response/Postvention On crisis in school. Please connect me with people/resources/trainings around the country. We are in good shape but always looking to be better. #satchat
A1: Would love to see every educator commit to 2 days of giving and/or receiving professional development over the summer. It will help them, others, and ultimately students #satchat
A1: Summer is a great time to explore new ideas. I love to attend conferences and workshops, and I like to read books that challenge me. There is nothing more rejuvenating than coming back in August with a sack full of new tools. #satchat
In the summer, I read, follow Twitter, and for the past few summers I have participated in the Summer Learning Challenge facilitated by @Katiemc827. #satchat
A2: Each summer I find time catching up on the journals, professional books, & articles I was too busy to more than just skim during the school year. Best of all is connecting with my #PLN at @ILAToday ‘s annual conference. Texas, here we come! #satchat
A1 Summer is about catching up around the house, in the yard. It is also about taking professional development trainings and preparing for September. #Satchat
A1: Summer learning starts with reflection, and identifying some areas of focus. I always look forward to reading as much as I can. My list has already started... any good recommendations? #satchat
A1: I love to take the month of June to restore and rejuvenate. I read, travel, & spend time with family. In July I start focusing on the year ahead by reading & thinking #satchat
A1: In addition to the professional reading I do over the summer, my biggest activity is volunteering with the Cebrin Goodman Teen Institute in Illinois! https://t.co/R3uea47tHv#satchat
A1 I agree Mia - it's a great time to explore new opportunities. My sister spent a weekend at a beautiful NE resort last year learning about teaching math--she loved it - link: https://t.co/OcDHQwxi7d#satchat
A1 I love to travel to new places and explore - I make all kinds of connections I can take back to work. Plus, my suitcase is full of books... #satchat
I like this idea—one area of focus! That way it’s not too overwhelming. If each teacher brought back one positive idea they focused on all summer, imagine how different (and cool) the next school year would be! #satchat#somethingtothinkabout
A1: Always seems like summer where I’m at with the weather here. I try to find a good book like #KidsDeserveIt, but I mainly just relax and travel. Last year went to the Amazon and did some ministry work with the indigenous ppl. #satchat

#satchat
A1: Would love to see every educator commit to 2 days of giving and/or receiving professional development over the summer. It will help them, others, and ultimately students #satchat
A1: Every summer I fall into the same trap--spend weeks falling in love with the newest acrononymorama, imagine its effectiveness with my lambs, then get surprised in September when my students turn out to be and act human. #satchat

Q1: There may be snow on the ground but it's time to think about summer. Where does your own personal learning fit into summer time?
#satchat
A1: Reflection is a big part of summer learning. What worked, what didn't - why something did and didn't work and what are plans for the coming year... much of this shouldn't be done in isolation but with other educators.
#satchat
A1: Would love to see every educator commit to 2 days of giving and/or receiving professional development over the summer. It will help them, others, and ultimately students #satchat
A1: I pick at least 1 book to read (hint it's a question coming up) go to at least 1 PD or EdCamp and learn something new with #edtech
And if lucky I'll give a presentation or two (this is part of our learning too) #satchat
A1 During summer I usually participate in PD provided by district, but also try to engage more in Twitter PLN. Also head to a conference or 2. This year heading to @iste 2018 & my district is cohosting a tech conf for our region. #satchat
A2 Same for me. I keep an online list of reading that I don't have time for during school year and try to chop away at it during the summer: https://t.co/ZObJ8f3IAe#satchat
Math can be challenging. Letting students struggle is an important part of the process. Far too often we want to help them early. Let them learn from mistakes. They are less likely to repeat the same mistake twice. The math process is as important as the final answer. #satchat
As a future teacher, I think of making sure I keep up on professional reading in the summer. I think it always important to expand knowledge, and summer is a good time for that. #satchat
A1. Since summers are also the end of a school year, as a teacher they're the best time to plan and prepare yourself for the next year! There are many new strategies to experiment with and listing them down according to the requirements for the next year is important. #satchat
A1 I like to attend the Scholastic Reading Summit each summer, + lots of reading for the SC book award selection committee. Kelly, elem librarian, Charleston. #satchat
A1: Learning happens all the time. Summer included. With more time, that means I can dive deeper into research, read more, discuss best practices more, etc. Effective school systems build this time into the school year rather than expecting Ts to do it all in the summer. #satchat
A1: Summer is also a time for me to write. One of my favorite things about last summer was the time my daughter spent writing. She is working on a novel of her own and got about 100 pages writing over the summer. #satchat
Every educator might be challenging...haha... but it really is amazing to see the number of educators that are willing to take their summers to learn new strategies, technologies, collaborate, etc to better serve their students. :) #satchat
A1 In Australia we have just finished Summer and are officially in Autumn. I was doing some study through the Australian Institute of Company Directors @AICDirectors and gave a guest lecture into a University subject during the January school break. Lifelong-Learning
#satchat
A2: This summer, I would choose a day focused on introducing teachers to global literacy initiatives and opening up their classrooms. Or, how to best bring curiosity into literacy intervention. Must I choose?! #SATchat
A2 - Topic = Learning how we learn...what about the limitations of our memory and how this knowledge should change instruction in the classroom.
#satchat
A2: One topic I have been focusing on this year is professional development. What is effective? What’s not working? How can we personalize it? Are there digital badges? I love to hear what other districts are doing, so that would be my focus. #satchat
A2: Back to the basics of good lesson design and formative assessment. Sometimes we need to be reminded to focus, and that how we teach is super important. #satchat
A1: There are some good virtual conferences that I have found because of my PLN. I also like to try and moderate a chat. The learning never stops on Twitter. #satchat
A2 My Summer PD would be around Personalized learning. Doing a whole classroom transformation where students will ne leading their learning and pace (full voice and choice) and would love to go deeper into this topic. #satchat
A2 supporting edtech in not so ed tech environment. I really kicked of ed tech this year but I’ve only done some baby steps I really want to get some great ideas #satchat
Q2: Only one day for professional learning? The topic would definitely have to be "How do we create more time for professional learning?" Our kids deserve teachers who are professionally informed and constantly growing. #satchat
Anything that builds #relationships; Ts are no longer the keepers of the content, we must connect with our Ss & each other; engage for deeper learning #MPSVT#satchat
A1: Anyone suffering from burn out or starting to feel it creep up?!? Summer learning is a great time to read, conference, and plan for the next year BUT don’t forget to RELAX and reflect, you can learn from your past year as well! 😊 #satchat
A2: That’s like picking one favorite book. No way! I wouldn’t want to choose just one topic, so my one day of PD would provide choices for teachers to let them follow a PD path they are most interested in, something that addresses a need in their classroom. #satchat
Q1: Read, read, read, read! Reflect, reflect, reflect! I try to attend a few conferences and connect with other admin and use that knowledge to prepare for a great year! My family is around me and I try to also establish routines for balance for the year #satchat
Great teachers and leaders are always learning. Summer off is not really the case when we are honing our practice and deepening our knowledge to be even better for the coming year. #satchat Love educators' commitment to continued learning!
Every educator might be challenging...haha... but it really is amazing to see the number of educators that are willing to take their summers to learn new strategies, technologies, collaborate, etc to better serve their students. :) #satchat
A1 We keep a pd list on our local union webpage to help educators access these opportunities--here's example (needs an update now): https://t.co/d4HtRL5Hmw#satchat
A1: Throughout the school year I keep a journal of things I want to improve upon or do differently. Summer is a great time to plan for implementation! #satchat
If every teacher had personalized and quality professional development—and were excited about it, imagine how different and dynamic instruction would be! That is my ultimate goal! #kidsdeserveit#satchat
A2: One topic I have been focusing on this year is professional development. What is effective? What’s not working? How can we personalize it? Are there digital badges? I love to hear what other districts are doing, so that would be my focus. #satchat
A2: Classroom management and/or teaching at-risk youth. I feel comfortable and educated with both topics, but I always feel like there’s so much more to learn! I want to stay up on the latest and greatest research and practices. #satchat
A2: If I had to choose just 1 topic it would be focused on changing Mindset! Big believer that with the right mindset ANYTHING can be accomplished! #satchat
A1:Read! Attend at least one conference and district PD. This year it’s #innedco18 Am also planning on leading a book study again, this time a slow chat on twitter to introduce ! Last year we did it on @voxer and read #tlap Book study can be done whenever! #satchat
Every educator might be challenging...haha... but it really is amazing to see the number of educators that are willing to take their summers to learn new strategies, technologies, collaborate, etc to better serve their students. :) #satchat
This makes me wonder....do we let students choose their own focus and make their own plan? Or do we require particular books and activities? And what might we do about that disconnect? #SATchat
A1 Love to pick a focus in summer and read, use my PLN w twitter chats, conferences if able, connect w local folks and reflect and refine practices for new school year. This time is gold because the rest of the school noise is quiet #satchat

SLC is awesome. Last year we had a bingo board of PD activities to complete...with appropriate resources. Contact @Katiemc827 for more info...anyone can participate! #satchat

@DrKennethKunz, @Katiemc827, @Katiemc827
A2: I'd choose PD on social emotional learning. With our current implementation of MTSS and PBIS, I feel this would be a perfect fit in our puzzle to assist ALL our students in being successful. #satchat
A2: this summer, I would love to spend a full day on @Desmos - building activities and more effective classroom use tips and strategies! #satchat#MTBoS
A2 Teaching number sense and critical thinking skills would be tied at the top for me. Why? These are the two biggest education gaps I see daily. By gap, I mean students have not been given enough opportunities to master either concept during their elementary years. #satchat
A2 My passion right now is empowering students to take charge of their learning - this is what I'll be researching, reflecting & blogging about this summer. #satchat
A2 My one day of PD would focus on Culturally Responsive Instruction. We have some instructional gaps and it’s time to grab the shovel and fill in those holes! #satchat
A2 inquiry learning or promoting an environment of inquiry. I’ve barely scratched the surface of inquiry learning and would really love to learn more #satchat
A2: how to give feedback that is intentional on writing to help encourage kids to write more. Intentional Feedback & Motivation. That’s it. That is all of the PD I want. #satchat
A2. My one-shot summer PD plan? Hit up the @SeriousPlayConf at @GeorgeMasonU on July 10-12. My principal @patton_carl spotted it. Super close to our school and relatively affordable! I’m so in. Maybe even the one-day #gamification certification course on July 9. #satchat
A2:A day to process learning and plan for implementation with my MTSS teams. Academics, behavior, attendance, social emotional learning, systems thinking, implementation science, and critical components. So much learning when our teams have a chance to collaborate! #satchat
A2 If I could only have 1 day of summer PD, and if it could be on any topic I wanted, I‘d probably use it to learn more about the science of social connection. https://t.co/5yquT7K1XH#satchat
A2 If I could only have one day of summer PD I would want it to be on helping create and develop mindful teachers and schools. How can we bring mindfulness to the classrooms? This is a hard question... there is so much to learn! #satchat
A2: My one day of PD in the summer would be learning with colleagues. I would want to share best practices, experiences, and new ideas with like-minded educators ready to learn collaboratively. Learning is social and that would be my ideal. #satchat
A1.2 They're also good for reading and writing relevanr content for professional growth. That is most certainly another essential part of teaching. #satchat
A2: If all data could be collected and analayzed, including the detailed reports from standardized tests, I’d want a PD centered on looking at our data truths to build an even stronger 2018-2018 school year! Sometimes its the timing that forces a rush on planning. 📋😃 #satchat
A2 Our collegial team spends one full day in the summer charting out the year, planning field studies, prepping new initiatives--we don't stop the whole day, makes a great start. #satchat
A1.2 They're also good for reading and writing relevant content for professional growth. That is most certainly another essential part of teaching. #satchat
I would love to talk with you about what this might look like in a literacy intervention setting. See more about my new teacher inquiry here: https://t.co/gcWPDLyK2c#SATchat
A2 #satchat This is a challenge... I think I would enjoy a day hiking or spending time outside with my Kindergarten team reflecting and celebrating our year together. Highlighting how, together we made a difference for our students. 🌏 Think about @TeachSDGs for the future.
A2: This summer - urban education, teaching at-risk students, motivating the whole-child, changing school culture... Next summer - something different, the following summer - something else #alwayslearning#satchat
A1b In addition to reading I try to
-Build on year-long lists of ideas I keep in my @Leuchtturm1917
-Move art around to trick my brain into new perspectives
-write and publish
#satchat
A2: That’s a tough one. I would say restorative justice or standards based grading, neither of which could be mastered in a day (or even year!) #satchat
A2: A day of developing personalized learning for the entire year. Teachers & Admins working together to explore resources and develop timelines to sustain learning throughout the school year #satchat
A2: Equitable and culturally responsive teaching. Above all, we’re in the business of people. Our students are growing up in a world that may sometimes feel unrecognizable to us. We have to adjust. #satchat
A2: #schoolculture hands down. “We want schools that students and teachers run to be a part of” - @burgess_shelley#LeadLAP. Developing this is a challenge and I believe the foundation for learning, high test scores, eliminating absenteeism, whatever your goals are #satchat
A1 Summer is wonderful time to let ideas simmer. During the yr we act quickly & efficiently. During vacation I like to wonder, research, tinker, and meet with other edus for great jam sessions https://t.co/8giO2m4jWP#satchat
Yes, it's so nice to witness. It's a great time to learn something new and actually have the time to dig deep and really understand how it can be applied in the classrooms! #satchat
A2: Right now, my focus is math. I have been working with my teaching partner and @beepreemo to #spiral our math program...I would love 1 day of PD with someone who has done this! #satchat
Amy from Cincinnati joining late! A2: I’d like some PD on #futureready and how to encourage it, especially among rural districts in my area! I know it’s important, but I need it to catch on our in the country! #satchat
Learning to code creates an environment of risk taking, trial & error, immediate feedback, reflection & observation - which we should encourage in ALL subject areas. If we take the time to create the culture, possibilities are endless and we can ditch the worksheets... #satchat
A2 Effective communication for various situations - coaching Ts, dealing with difficult Ss Ps, making meaningful connections while conveying a message. #satchat
A2: Instructional Design. Many schools & districts desire to transform student task & redesigning holistically. In order for those shifts to happen at the classroom level there needs to be learning around intentional instructional design. #satchat@E_Sheninger
In NJ, our @NJLiteracyAssociation always hosts a “Teach at the Beach” conference for freestyle literacy learning with tons of giveaways. This year we are teaming with @NJAMLE to make it even better! #satchat
A2 Only one day of PD... ONE DAY?
Well it would be collaborative - brainstorming... exploration of new concepts and focusing on something that could be used the next day. We have to make the best of the time given and make our own time to learn.
#satchat
A2: If I was forced to pick one topic for one day and that was all the PD for the summer, I would focus on creating real, meaningful partnerships with families as key stakeholders in our schools by including them in decision-making. #satchat
We don't take enough time to stop and reflect on our practices. This is a great protocol @TheBradCurrie . Reflecting before planning helps us stay focused and limit our goals to those that make an impact!
#satchat

There's freedom in choosing a path for PD in the summer; there's the gift of #time, and longer days - all of which I believe contribute positively to professional growth! #MPSVT#lifelonglearning#satchat
I would LOVE to ask our students this question. What's 1 thing students want teachers to learn this summer? What one thing students would be willing to learn over the summer? #satchat
A2 My Summer PD would be around Personalized learning. Doing a whole classroom transformation where students will ne leading their learning and pace (full voice and choice) and would love to go deeper into this topic. #satchat
2) Writing is a great reflection tool. I love spending time over the summer writing. When others read your thoughts you gain both their wisdom and you are forced to reflect and really own your ideas. Great personalized PD #satchat
A2: Instructional Design. Many schools & districts desire to transform student task & redesigning holistically. In order for those shifts to happen at the classroom level there needs to be learning around intentional instructional design. #satchat@E_Sheninger@COJasonGlass
In reply to
@TheBradCurrie, @E_Sheninger, @COJasonGlass, @E_Sheninger, @COJasonGlass
A2. I would want PD on the latest, best strategies 4 helping Ss navigate non-fiction text=reading & writing. Need 2 refine & sharpen tools in the ol' toolbox! #satchat
My district just ran a PD solely on mindfulness. It was really fantastic! They offered yoga, nutrition, mindful meditation, massage, and coloring. #satchat I highly recommend!
A2. If we could discuss one topic it would how we could support students in maintaining the same kind of energy that they have during their vacations, in a classroom. How to have a lighter and less stressful environment in a classroom. #satchat
A2: I'd choose PD on social emotional learning. With our current implementation of MTSS and PBIS, I feel this would be a perfect fit in our puzzle to assist ALL our students in being successful. #satchat
#satchat A2 One day of summer PD would be about effective methods of communication and collaboration. We need to learn to listen and support one another more effectively.
We don't take enough time to stop and reflect on our practices. This is a great protocol @TheBradCurrie . Reflecting before planning helps us stay focused and limit our goals to those that make an impact!
#satchat

A2: This summer - urban education, teaching at-risk students, motivating the whole-child, changing school culture... Next summer - something different, the following summer - something else #alwayslearning#satchat
A2 I would like to focus on a multi yr thematic project, creating a menu of possibilities for Ss that allows for differentiation & personalization incorporating room for experts, community, and plenty of iterations! #Satchat
A2) So tough to choose just 1! I’d say something on team building that would build relationships, motivate the team, and help everyone to focus on a new year of teaching and learning. #Satchat
A2 Time is often mentioned as the stop-gap to interdisciplinary, cross-divisional, and/or global collaboration. I would love a PD day for our teachers to collaborate on lessons with other professionals of their choosing. We learn so much from each other! #collaboration#satchat
A2: This summer I would choose to focus on strategies for sparking collaboration between teachers and incorporating peer observations / meaningful PLCs throughout the year. #bettertogether#satchat
Relationships are key! Ed can be isolating within classrooms and schools, it is critical to be intentional about building a community of practice. Great am thoughts! #satchat
Anything that builds #relationships; Ts are no longer the keepers of the content, we must connect with our Ss & each other; engage for deeper learning #MPSVT#satchat
A2- design presses and creativity lend themselves to the growing culture of entrepreneurship in Edu, especially in elementary levels where we can build a mindset
I’m all in with this topic... would love to know how others are doing it. #satchat
Q2 - One day of PD for me would be about how to foster a culture of kindness for EVERY child. What steps can we take as educators? #satchat Thanks for the recommendation @NeelDesaiBA

Q3: Two part question... What book is on your list to read this summer? And what book would you recommend other educators read during summer break? #satchat
A2 Only one day of PD... ONE DAY?
Well it would be collaborative - brainstorming... exploration of new concepts and focusing on something that could be used the next day. We have to make the best of the time given and make our own time to learn.
#satchat
Even the best worksheets still require students to put ideas on paper. While that works for some, technology helps unlock human potential when implemented properly. A digital worksheet is still a worksheet. Use the devices to create content and empower students. #satchat
A2) So tough to choose just 1! I’d say something on team building that would build relationships, motivate the team, and help everyone to focus on a new year of teaching and learning. #Satchat
A2 @plennig does a great job kicking off our summer with an optional TechCamp for all faculty. We explore new #edtech opportunities so that we can tinker over the summer. #satchat#collaborativePD
Small Teaching: Everyday Lessons from the Science of Learning! I've never been because I'm over in Korea, but just looked at it now. Looks awesome! #satchat
Check out https://t.co/fZlvG1s626 for relevant, personalized PD that can be done anytime and anywhere. Even from your back deck sipping on a drink this summer 🍹. I don’t mean to sound like an ad, I just truly believe in this org’s mission #satchat
A2: Im working on creating opportunities for students to guide their own learning! Would want to observe and work other Ts that are implementing similar things! #satchat#LCInnovation
#satchat A2: I'd first like sessions on teen mental health topics. As for classroom learning, I'd be interested in topics on world language interpersonal skill building.
A2 One day!? I would want it to be collaborative with my team so that we could bring our collective skills and gifts. Topic? Unit planning that we haven’t had time to finish this year with an innovative look. #satchat
A2: #satchat Bad ideas for 1 day of PD:
"Let's look at standardized test data"
"Let me talk at you about being an engaging teacher"
"Watch my powerpoint about tech integration"
"Let's get certified as test monitors & other state mandated fun"
"Stay off Social Networks"
Q3: Two part question... What book is on your list to read this summer? And what book would you recommend other educators read during summer break? #satchat
A2 @plennig does a great job kicking off our summer with an optional TechCamp for all faculty. We explore new #edtech opportunities so that we can tinker over the summer. #satchat#collaborativePD
A2: I’d have to say social emotional learning and success skills for students. I feel it is such a critical piece for our students and something that is often assumed and not explicitly taught. #satchat
A2: Summer PD of my choice: Team building & practical communication skills within my building! I LOVE my team here at #LIS in @LTPS1 & I think it would only be a benefit to work on being more in tune with each other. For our selves & the Ss #satchat
Q3: Two part question... What book is on your list to read this summer? And what book would you recommend other educators read during summer break? #satchat

Relationships are key! Ed can be isolating within classrooms and schools, it is critical to be intentional about building a community of practice. Great am thoughts! #satchat

A3: I am going to dig into Hattie’s work a bit more this summer. I would highly recommend The Essential Conversation by Sara Lawrence-Lightfoot #satchat

A3. Book I want to read this summer- Future Driven. The book I all educators should read is Learning Transformed by @thomascmurray and @E_Sheninger#satchat
Q3: Two part question... What book is on your list to read this summer? And what book would you recommend other educators read during summer break? #satchat

A3 Leverage Leadership is on my list for this summer. The wood we created at Hamilton high was one of my fav books from grad school a long while ago but I feel it still has good points. #satchat
Only one day of PD? I’d want to be engaged in discussions about how we define learning, what it looks like in schools (for students & adults) & the different opportunities we offer to communicate new understandings! #satchat
A2: I would love to have a day designed with the Edcamp structure in mind where teachers and admins within the school could do the necessary collaboration that time does not allow for during the year. No agenda beforehand- just educators reflecting and planning together. #satchat

Teaching to Strengths: Supporting Students Living with Trauma, Violence, and Chronic Stress to help support my inner city student dealing with trauma on a daily basis and to help my teachers support them and still teach their classes #satchat
A2 If I had only 1 day of PD over the summer I'd set up shop at the beach w/ 3 or 4 fav books on education, a highlighter, pen, flavored water & my 90's mix of music. Plus, when I'm alone I'm usually the smartest guy in the room :) #satchat
Small Teaching: Everyday Lessons from the Science of Learning! I've never been because I'm over in Korea, but just looked at it now. Looks awesome! #satchat
A3: I have 2 books for summer reading already here:
Empower - What Happens When Students Own Their Learning
Solving Disproportionality and Achieving Equity
#satchat
I recommend:
David and Goliath and the Tipping Point by @Gladwell
and Drive by @DanielPink
A2 1 day PD - Relationship building & connecting to teach/improve perseverance & GRIT to students as well as teacher; it’s easy to work with students that want to be in class—what about those that are less engaged? How do you hook them? It starts with the relationship #satchat
A3: It Won’t Be Easy: An Exceedingly Honest (and Slightly Unprofessional) Love Letter to Teaching by @MrTomRad. I’d recommend Troublemakers by @CarlaShalaby. It will make you think differently about your own classroom “troublemakers” #satchat
Q3: Two part question... What book is on your list to read this summer? And what book would you recommend other educators read during summer break? #satchat
📚 Read this summer: Carol Dweck Mindset. Recommend: Transforming School Culture @newfrontier21 Dr. Anthony Muhammad. Excited to lead a book study on this one this summer. 📖#satchat So many amazing books!!!
A3: Be on the look out for my next book that I am co-authoring with @mentorEmily titled Tech Request: A Guide for Coaching Educators in the Digital World. Due out in late 2018 #Satchat#TechRequestEDU
Q3: Two part question... What book is on your list to read this summer? And what book would you recommend other educators read during summer break? #satchat
A3: This one is easy! Currently reading The Innovators Mindset by @gcouros and I highly recommend it! My “to read” list includes Empower by John Spencer and AJ Julian and Learning Transformed by @thomascmurray! #satchat
A3. So many to are on it now...a re-read of David and Goliath by Malcom Gladwell. I would recommend the same book to educators. Love tag line underdogs, misfits, and battling giants #satchat
A3.b I recommend for others to read Creating Innovators (Enhanced EBook): The Making of Young People Who Will Change the World https://t.co/uB21K4RvHF#satchat#edchatmena
A3: This may be a bad answer, but I don't tend to read education books...I tend to use education books (reference) and read education blogs online. Things change fast, time is precious. Maximize my learning. #satchat
Just did some research on a district I have an interview for and they display what Ts are currently reading (or their summer reads) - how awesome is that for the community to see?? #satchat
A3: Shameless plug. Our book gives an optimistic path forward for #education in a time of rapid tech innovation. We argue empathy & humanity are more important than ever. All $ from sales goes to teacher development. Available at https://t.co/xib1a9kBhg#satchat@Teaching4IR
#satchat A3: I plan on reading "The Global Achievement Gap" by @DrTonyWagner . Recommended book: @DrTonyWagner 's "Creating Innovators: The Making of Young People Who Will Change the World." Give him a follow!
A3. One of the books on our to read list is Learn Like a Pirate by @PaulSolarz. We'd recommend Teach Like a Pirate by @burgessdave to educators! It's a refreshing take on teaching and anyone and not just teachers can pick it up for a good read! #satchat
In reply to
@TheBradCurrie, @PaulSolarz, @burgessdave
A3: Book I want to read, A Good Time to be a Girl by H. Morrissey - It's a powerful time for women in our country. A book that others should read, Spark by John J Ratey and Eric Hagerman - interesting read about the connection between physical exercise and mental health #satchat
A3: this is one book I want to read this summer. As far as recommendations go, I suggest Readicide by @KellyGToGo. It was insightful & helpful at a time when I needed it. #satchat
A3: I ave just recently joined Voxer and am in several book studies. Through this I’ve done a book tasting with staff and now have 7 book studies going: Culturize, 4OCF, TLAP, LLAP, The Formative Five, The Innovator’s Mindset, Kids Deserve It. #satchat
A3: Book on MY list for this summer is The Unselfie UnSelfie: Why Empathetic Kids Succeed in Our All-About-Me World https://t.co/nPInz9RC2D it has been sitting in a stack in my room since @LTPS1 orientation last summer and I've been dying to dig in!!!! #satchat
Q3: Two part question... What book is on your list to read this summer? And what book would you recommend other educators read during summer break? #satchat
Q3: Two part question... What book is on your list to read this summer? And what book would you recommend other educators read during summer break? #satchat
A3: I’m excited to read @DrSDougherty ‘s “Engaging Readers.” I’m also hoping that literacy teacher leaders will enjoy the passion in our new book on making your school literacy rich throughout the day....a nerdy plug from an excited co-author. #literacystrong#satchat
A2 My role at Sydney Catholic Schools has a focus on Religious Leadership of our schools, which includes Authentic Catholic Leadership. I published Christian Leadership: A Blessing recently. See https://t.co/YHqev2NuSw#satchat
A3 One of my favourites this year was Shift This by @JoyKirr Several of our Ts are doing a book study on it in our ind. PD & they've been making incredible changes in their classrooms & teaching. #satchat
A3: This may be a bad answer, but I don't tend to read education books...I tend to use education books (reference) and read education blogs online. Things change fast, time is precious. Maximize my learning. #satchat
A4. “Fabulous” prizes like Cuba Cheese 😁for participating in a Summer Learning Challenge. Anyone, anywhere welcome so we can grow #cncting4kids network. #satchat
Classroom management and discipline strategies are often the most needed skills for educators. Students won’t maximize learning in the midst of disorder. #satchat
A4: Give them authentic choices. I facilitate a virtual book club focused on children's literature selections where teachers get credit for reading and responding. The enthusiasm is amazing and teachers receive the books to keep in their own classrooms. #SATchat
A4: My division offers a wide variety of PD and summer curriculum development opportunities. They fill up quickly. Ts are motivated to participate because they address current needs and offer choice. Offered all over the county, so there is usually something nearby. #satchat
I get the desire to read Ed Books ... i have read many and have been inspired, but now I am seeing they are basically saying the same thing ... build positive relationship and inspire your kids through engaging methods. #10WordSummary#satchat
A4 If I hear a colleague expressing interest, excitement, frustration, or worry, something important to them is at stake. I ask questions to figure out what that “something important” is. Then if I see PD opportunities related to it, I pass them along. #satchat
Kick off the summer right by attending the 4th Annual Tomorrow’s Classrooms Today Conference on May 18 and 19 at Rider University in New Jersey. Fairly priced and full of great experiences https://t.co/WpBcUoK6Er#satchat#TCT18
A3: currently taking suggestions for a summer read. Absolutely recommend You Are A Badass by @JenSincero. I would recommend this for colleagues and for graduating high school Seniors #satchat
IMO no such thing as a bad answer. Totally valid. I try to do both so I can get some greater depth on topics that are most important and perhaps more timeless. #satchat
Q3: Two part question... What book is on your list to read this summer? And what book would you recommend other educators read during summer break? #satchat
A3: I would also recommend #messagingmatters by William Parker @Williamdp. It’s a great book on my communicating with the community is crucial and the great things that happen when you do!! Will joined @PerspectivesNEd if you want a preview before you buy!! #satchat
A4 I think the prospect of creating something new or modifying what we're already doing helps motivate people to get on board - BE the change we want to see #satchat
In reply to
@ScottRRocco, @ClarkeHolmes16, @WeAreHTSD
Thanks..lol Just being honest. Sometimes I need to take the quick road straight to the point. Online searches and selected readings help with that. #satchat
A4: I lead by example and let my staff know my plans for reflection and professional development over the summer break. I encourage them to do the same thing. We have to take care of ourselves to be able to take care of our kiddos! #satchat
I like the term productive struggle. It helps when Ss understand how they learn. I teach them to be patient with themselves as they learn a new concept. Don’t give up and get your brain to like what it is doing. #satchat
A4) Motivate others for summer learning by making it something tangible for their success or their student success. As mentioned before - starts with honest personal reflection. #satchat
A4 All learners need to feel successful and engaged right from the start, especially adults - offer multi layered growth opportunities and make it fun! #satchat
Huge recommendation!!! If your summer reading does not involve learning about launching your year with @pernilleripp ‘s Global Read Aloud, then you HAVE TO! It will change the culture of reading in your school! 😃😃😃 #satchat
A4: The same way you inspire others to engage in professional learning at any other time. Inspiration, not coercion. Allow them to see how they can fulfill the mission they had when they entered the teaching profession - to make the world better through #education. #satchat
A4. Here’s why summer continuing education matters: even if it’s just as simple as 20 minutes of Twitter each day for nine weeks. That’s 15 hours (2 full school days!) of new information processed by those teachers who’ve tweeted compared to those who’ve missed it. #satchat
A4: Connect with other likeminded educators! Show off and praise your awesome PLN to everyone you come across. As always we must go first to show others the way! #satchat
A4: I was inspired to learn last summer because @Katiemc827 set up a “Bingo” choice board in Schoology and people from many district participated and shared their learning, PD, edcamps! More cross district sharing is my goal! #satchat
Educators who would benefit from discipline and classroom management training:
1. Those who think they need it.
2. Those who don’t think they need it.
3. New and future educators. #satchat
A3 Building Executive Function: the missing link to student achievement by Nancy Sulla - progressive focus on learning strategy #satchathttps://t.co/YjWFWClksA
A4: We typically have half day or one day workshops offered in the summer with compensation. I have tried to pick out a session that matches an educator and encourage them to attend. #satchat
A3: I have an ever growing list of ‘Want to Reads’ in my Google Keep, but I always recommend that teachers read @chrisemdin For White Folks Who Teach in the Hood. #satchat
A4: I think it’s about finding/making available meaningful PD opportunities for that person. Find out why they aren’t participating, and help fix that. #satchat
A4 Make it meaningful to them. Focus on topics they want. Keep it interactive and to the point. Make it accessible and efficient. Give them something they can use when they go back to the classroom from day one! Don't waste their time. #satchat
A4 I try to motivate by fun and learning. Just like students, I don’t want to offer prizes or incentives. Make the format about voice/choice, make it fun, engaging, meaningful and your learners will want to be there. That is my mission. Learn, teach and lead with ❤️ #satchat
My own enthusiasm is usually contagious. Just like a teacher in a classroom, if you show them how much you love and learn from it, that spreads. Also providing pd session and more importantly coaching. #satchat
Compensation helps, I find many Ts in my dept participate as long as they're around - sometimes it's hard to get everyone in one place at one time w/ vacations etc. #satchat
A3: I'm really looking forward to reading this book by @trev_mackenzie! I've just started learning about inquiry-based teaching & learning. My Ss love it already! #satchat
A4: Present an idea to your team, friends, colleagues and go together! Who better to learn with than those doing the same work? Make it a learning adventure! #satchat
A4 Talk with those who share my same passions and share ideas together. Then build off of that! It’s all about who I surround myself with and learn together! #satchat
A4: Supportive conversation to identify an area of interest or desired development. Then assist in finding an avenue for professional learning that matches. #pdwithapurpose#personalizedlearning#satchat
A4: Talk it up. If you are psyched, they can see and feel it, too. Enthusiasm is contagious. I just passed on #InstantRelevance to a math teacher on my hall yesterday. Talked up what I had gotten out of it and that there were tons of great math ideas. #satchat
We motivate by communicating ideas to each other ... not every educator will buy in and sometimes you just need to leave the negative folks out of the loop. #satchat
A3: My summer book recommendation for others: Children's or YA novel of your choosing/interest! Ts need to feed our souls before we can help Ss feed theirs in our classroom. Keeping active in our reading lives is important for personal growth #satchat@mhayes611@LTPS1#LTPS
I have to agree, and always feel a bit quizzical when these talking heads pontificate about the midterms or 2020. I mean, don’t they know? Haven’t they heard of Q? How can these newscasters be so cut off from reality? I know they are paid to lie, but don’t they tire of it?
A4: The best way to motivate other educators is to model your efforts to improve & continually learn. Attend conferences, meetings, & events. Read, present, collaborate, and share. Talk about your learning & offer to work with others. Be the positive model for colleagues #satchat
A4 I like to tell them how its worked wonders for me. I hope my super genuine excitement and enthusiasm is enough to sell them on it! I also tag people on social media on great ideas so they can at least see what's out there. #satchat
A4: The Ts you want to work with should be excited to put in some work over the summer - motivate each other by reminding yourselves of the why - because #KidsDeserveIt#satchat
A4-provide variety of topics. Provide various ways of engaging (in person, digitally or in a small group). Give people credit toward one of the “required” PD during the year. #satchat
A4: Lots of ways! 1st—be a model! Engage in your own professional learning to set a positive example. 2nd—on going conversation with teachers about the importance of being a learner! 3rd by making teachers aware of high quality professional learning opportunities! #satchat
I also think that knowing the opportunity is going to benefit them and their students in the upcoming year is motivating. If it's not... then why bother? Make it meaningful #satchat
A4: How about a quality summer reading initiative that engages teachers as well as kids? The summer learning loss is a huge problem that can be addressed and impact our kids! #satchat
#satchat A4: Motivation comes from within. I might say, "Hey, I'm going to this conference, doing this Twitter chat, or reading this book. Want to join in?"
A3 Currently reading:
Belbin. M. (2011). The Shape of Organization. Oxford, Routledge.
Highly recommend:
Kegan, Robert., Laskow Lahey, Lisa. (2009). Immunity to Change. Boston. Harvard Business Press.
#satchat
A4: there are so many different ways to engage in personal learning. Provide choice! And if you’re the one offering the learning, source out topics that matter wherever you are, for those particular educators and students, right now. Not necessarily just what’s trendy. #satchat
A4: At my age, and at this late stage of my career, when some see me participating in a variety of professional learning opportunities, it serves as a motivator for them. I, in turn, am motivated by their interest and enthusiasm! 😊 #satchat

Today's Topic: Summer Learning for Educators & Students
Moderators: @ScottRRocco@wkrakower@TheBradCurrie
Questions are here: https://t.co/K84yty7NR3
The chat starts right... NOW! Please introduce yourself, where you are from & what you do in education
A4. We start by sharing and caring. We model what we get. Model learning. You can create a learning challenge but it still comes down to relationships. #satchat
A4, part 2: Last summer we offered teachers a t-shirt and a sign to hang outside their classroom if they became apple certified over the summer. AMAZING how many took us up on the challenge #satchat
A4: the most effective way to motivate for summer learning is to model the behavior yourself and promote a persistent (i.e. 12 month) growth mindset. Building mantras like “We’re All in this Together” and “Always Learning” reinforce these ideas. #satchat
A5 Get excited about what you’re learning and talk about it! Book groups over coffee, flexible times and comfy locations, and most of all, fun and relevant. #satchat
A4 I introduce new tech tools to Ts who struggle with tech at the end of the school year and then suggest they play with it during the summer when time is on their side. #Satchat
A4 bring up new ideas I learned during informal conversations, talk about @edcamp@PAECT and @keystonespa events that are happening and what is learned. #satchat
A4: Because I am not yet a teacher this is hard for me to answer. I am thinking right now about ways I will motivate myself- what comes to mind is wanting to be a wonderful educator and summer learning to expand my knowledge is a huge part in that I think. #satchat
A4. We start by sharing and caring. We model what we get. Model learning. You can create a learning challenge but it still comes down to relationships. #satchat
I love this so much! Sometimes I'll read an article that I know relates to something a colleague is working on and I'll share it to inspire them. No one has ever complained yet! #satchat
I feel the same way about coding. People ask how I learned, did I take a course, is there a book i recommend? Honestly, I Google what I need when I need it, find a couple solutions, and pick the one that works best for what I'm designing. #satchat
A4 Our department learns a lot from each other. We try to have regular PLCs and are constantly sharing new ideas that we pick up as individuals. #satchat

but let God transform you into a new person by
changing the way you think.
Then you will learn to know God's will for you,
which is good & pleasing & perfect.'

I can’t get ready to leave and chat. Sorry folks, but multitasker I am not. I’ll check back and read through the tweets later. Thanks for the chat. Hate to leave but I have an appt to get to. Have a great weekend! #satchat
A4: By discussing my own professional summer plans I try to engage & interest others & ask their plans too! Stimulating motivation in my peers to meet/match me on goals that we can achieve together #satchat#LTPS
A4: the only thing I have found to motivate others is to show and share what I do in the summer. If you can rope one or two of your colleagues in by example, then you are expanding your collective knowledge & it only benefits the kids when we all get back. #satchat
Yes! Love this! Be a positive model! I often have coworkers ask if they can come with me to conferences where I present! Love that they see the excitement, and want to join in! #satchat
A4: The best way to motivate other educators is to model your efforts to improve & continually learn. Attend conferences, meetings, & events. Read, present, collaborate, and share. Talk about your learning & offer to work with others. Be the positive model for colleagues #satchat
A3 I always recommend Punished by Rewards by @alfiekohn This was the book we based our school philosophy on when we opened 20 years ago. Best book for helping Ss become internally motivated #Satchat
A1 I find a good professional development book to read over my travels in the summer. It is one of those things that doesn't feel like work, but it helps my practice. #satchat
A4: Lots of ways! 1st—be a model! Engage in your own professional learning to set a positive example. 2nd—on going conversation with teachers about the importance of being a learner! 3rd by making teachers aware of high quality professional learning opportunities! #satchat
A4: It’s easy to get lost over the summer. Stay in contact with your tribe. Use Twitter, Voxer, etc... Communicate, coordinate, and find a shared interest. Be the role model for others. #satchat
Learning is a social construct that thrives when self-directed. So when thinking about “motivating” others, I would argue the motivation must start from within & as leaders we can encourage others by modeling & by creating opportunities for edus to learn together. #satchat
A1. I spend a lot of time trying out new things I might want to use as labs or methods. Last summer I worked on setting up a new course (for me) as a flipped class. I try and read more. #satchat
HERE WE GO...
Q1: There may be snow on the ground but it's time to think about summer. Where does your own personal learning fit into summer time?
#satchat
The lack of books I'm seeing on culturally responsive pedagogy is disheartening. bell hooks, Gloria Ladson-Billings, Lisa Delpit, Freire, to name just a few #satchat
Q5: Motivating students to continue their learning during summer can be a challenge. What tips do you have for other educators to get students to engage in summer learning activities? #satchat
Check yourself-r u participating in negative conversations in the teacher's room & parking lot about ur school, your students? Or r u having constructive conversations on growth & improvement? Enthusiasm is free & contagious & so is negativity *choose the former & lead! #satchat
A4: I share tidbits on Facebook, where more of my on-site colleagues are connected with me, and use my own hashtags to keep track of conversations. #satchat
A5. CHOICE! Stop treating summer break as a self-guided “extra unit” where kids are expected to teach themselves EXACTLY what they’d typically expect from a classroom teacher, especially if the return exam is multiple choice. Let students read, reflect, and RELAX. #satchat
#satchat That's a neat idea. I'd participate when possible if that was offered in my community. Could be a good way to get to know colleagues across a large campus.
A4: Our district pays teachers to show up for local PD. I'm not fond of the idea--if you want to be a pro, well, PD is part of the process. Who wouldn't want to get better at this? #satchat
A4: I make an effort to offer self-paced professional development during the summer. Many of my teachers like taking online courses that they can complete where they want, when they want. :-)
#satchat
A4: At my age, and at this late stage of my career, when some see me participating in a variety of professional learning opportunities, it serves as a motivator for them. I, in turn, am motivated by their interest and enthusiasm! 😊 #satchat
#satchat A3: Ts need to know 3 things: 1) how to build relationships 2) their content and 3) HOW TO ENCODE IT IN Ss MINDS. I'd recommend "Make It Stick" (Brown, Roediger, McDaniel) to address the 3rd. Way too many Ts overlook this because it means change in methods.
A4: develop activities that teachers WANT to go to! Find out what kind of PD they want, and cater to their interests. I also think something less formal, like a book study where you meet over lunch, may be effective as well! #satchat
Indeed, and Ss pick up on this negative talk and actions, it's not ok for anyone in any field and Ts esp, Ss spend more time around them than anyone else. #SatChat
A4 conversation, PD linked to needs and just did a staff book tasting yesterday to give time to see what is available and staff had lots of positive feedback #satchat
Q5: Motivating students to continue their learning during summer can be a challenge. What tips do you have for other educators to get students to engage in summer learning activities? #satchat
A5 #satchat I think a major struggle is that we don't know our "new kids" until the day before (ish) school starts. Depts could do motivating activities I suppose, like Twitter chats on summer readings or voluntary visits to local museums?
A4 I share ideas & learning opportunities with Ts, & recommend books. But I also understand that some Ts really need to unplug & refresh without doing anything education related and I think that's healthy #satchat
Want to be a better Educator ... focus on being the best YOU, you can be. Not about emulating someone else because they have a book or are Twitter famous ... you cannot inspire kids if you are not inspiring you. #satchat
A5: This is a hard one. I think it is important to discuss with Ss and Ps community opportunities. Also, sharing my own goals for the summer and asking Ss to share theirs. #satchat
I'm a @DrTonyWagner junkie, too! I've read The Global Achievement Gap, Most Likely to Succeed, and can hardly wait to tackle Creating Innovators! #satchat
A5 for my curriculum, recommending Ss attend camps, workshops, or act in a show; they can connect with others who are passionate about the arts and keep honing their skills #satchat
A4: I think sometimes people need to see what is in it for them/their practice/their students to buy into summer PD. After I try something new, I like to share and then explain how it was worth my time. Time is precious. #satchat
#satchat A5: Requiring summer reading, etc. does not inspire. However, social media interaction could keep teens connected. For French, perhaps I'll plan something fun.
A5: An engaging book list for summer reading can make a big difference. We went from an alpha by author PDF that most kids recycled to this website. https://t.co/1SXQ5LG81k This year we want to build in a way for student input. #satchat
A4 here’s a great opportunity to motivate colleagues. Thaler them to the 4th Annual Tomorrow’s Classrooms Today Conference
A conference by educators for educators. #satchathttps://t.co/99JV7Jpdbh
A4 In Australia, the long summer break is a chance to seek quality time with family & friends. Many would use it to a subject toward a Master’s degree or to prepare for their classes in the New Year by doing background reading. #satchat
A5: Try to get Ss to integrate learning into their daily routines. Help them to notice that they can learn from anything they are doing, hearing, seeing. Get them to think critically about things they are doing or hearing. Learning is more than just practice problems. #satchat
A2 #edtech Sharing resources and how to adapt it to our practice. It's the summer, I want it to be interactive/active and I want to have fun and play. #satchat
A5 #satchat one thing we try and do is communicate what Ss thought of course from one year to the next, perhaps having current Ss recommend summer strategies to incoming Ss would be a good idea!
A5: Personalize it! Summer is their downtime, so find ways for students to choose the paths of learning they are interested in and make it fun! #SatChat
A5: Make summer learning (summer school) fun! Nearing the end of the year, teachers can give a little taste of what summer school will be like. Play educational games, make it hands on. #satchat
Q5: Motivating students to continue their learning during summer can be a challenge. What tips do you have for other educators to get students to engage in summer learning activities? #satchat
A5: Has to have purpose. Exploring, writing and drawing are fun for summer learning! Who doesn't love that. Just don't call it "summer homework". #SatChat
Q3: Two part question... What book is on your list to read this summer? And what book would you recommend other educators read during summer break? #satchat
A5: It takes a village! We partner with our after school program and our public library to offer many daily educational opportunities for our students. Those opportunities are fun but at the same time they are learning. #keepitfun#satchat
A4 can’t motivate others but we can “as in lead a horse to water and salt the feed” :) set up situational opportunities and multiple pathways that allow for individual, collaborative, F2F, and virtual experiences #satchat
Last year, we did #edcamp style summer reading, in which teachers followed their own interests in education. During faculty week before school started, book talks were by topic/concept groups. Everyone shared main points and takeaways to incorporate in teaching or work. #satchat
A2. If I had choices and had to pick 1...either learning more about incorporating computational thinking or creating a more positive school culture. #satchat
A4. Empowerment, giving Ts a choice and a voice in their learning just like students. Also, being excited about the summer learning and making it engaging not a lecture! #movement#current#beuncomfortable#Satchat
A5) Communication with parents & students about summer programs with educational components- who says you can’t have fun & learn at the same time. If applicable have students earn credits as well #satchat
A5: Has to have purpose. Exploring, writing and drawing are fun for summer learning! Who doesn't love that. Just don't call it "summer homework". #SatChat
A5: What about summer field trips? Give Ss the option of joining a trip to the zoo, museum, national park, etc... Just b/c our parents took us doesn't mean our Ss will ever see these places. #satchat
A5: Summer should be a time for Ss to read, engage in creative activities that sometimes get lost during the school year - I would love to see a community-based program/space for Ss to use to throughout the summer where they can learn informally in a safe environment #satchat
A5: Be first! It’s not enough for me to tell my students to read and write over the summer. I will show them through my own blogging and book reviews and getting after it as much as possible! #satchat
A5: Our students love anything tech-based. Online chats might be an idea that would engage students over the summer. Wouldn't it be awesome for Ts to establish a relationship with their Ss before they even walk through the classroom?
#satchat
I'm fine with covering expenses--why should I get the same as you when my kids are grown and I can walk to the local PD events. I think the word "training" is telling. #satchat
On Veterans day we will have our military honor a man who dodged serving instead of honoring our military men and women. This country is volunteering itself to dictatorship. Sad, very sad. #SatChat#SaturdayMorning#AMJOY
A5 Hold Parent Academy events in the Spring to get their support for summer learning. Also work with the local library to encourage fun, camp-style learning events #satchat
A5 yearly our department of education has this prog where they invite private individuals to repaint classrooms and repair chairs and tables, I’d like to invite my students to participate in one. #satchat
A5 Find summer learning opportunities for Ss that are not boring. It needs to be something hands-on and fun for them. Maybe something that gets them outside. Keep it brief in both length and effort. I truly believe that our Ss need summer to be kids and recharge. #satchat
Q5: Motivating students to continue their learning during summer can be a challenge. What tips do you have for other educators to get students to engage in summer learning activities? #satchat
A5: Summer is also a time for fun. Whatever you do, don’t make it feel “schooly” or like an extension of the school year. It needs to feel different and exciting. #satchat
A4. Collaboration works well for many educators. If we can contribute to their content and plans for school and they can do the same for us, motivation comes naturally to become better. #satchat
A5: find opportunities to connect to Ss throughout summer. Provide Ss with real world experiences to grow in their learning. Share what you're learning throughout summer! #satchat
A4: I invite them, share my enthusiasm, share my materials, model learning and continually try to show them how it applies to what they value....and of course bring food! Summer is about learning and engaging in different settings. #satchat
Excellent point! I Agree Sofie! Excitement about our own ventures is infectious & being open to others joining is a less rigid way of commitment to personal PD over the summer #satchat
A4: the only thing I have found to motivate others is to show and share what I do in the summer. If you can rope one or two of your colleagues in by example, then you are expanding your collective knowledge & it only benefits the kids when we all get back. #satchat
#satchat Good point. Department chairs could be the team leader, and invite folks to f2f for coffee or something else fun for chat. Maybe? People have to make choices.
#satchat Websites, Twitter, and Instagram allow us to keep recommending great #books and supporting discussions around them., yes, even over the summer.
A5: Encourage students to read, take a summer course at a local community college, participate in educational activities that foster learning like band camp, etc. Learning doesn’t have to happen in a classroom—it can happen anywhere! #satchat
A5- summer learning needs to be given weight. They need to know WHY they are doing it. Tie the learning into what they need NEXT year not make it about what they did LAST year. Move forward! #satchat
A4: Thinking of hosting a similar #satchat with my teachers over the summer. Good way to stay connected and focused on improving our craft. #satchat (I also budget extra $ for my teachers’ summer learning/ 💵 is a great motivator! 😂)
A5: We know #geniushour. How about #geniussummer ? Give students a chance to present at the beginning of the next school year. New take on “Share what you did this summer”. #satchat
A5 Instead of creating “exciting” summer learning activities that won’t excite everyone, or developing accountability systems that make summer learning more aversive, I help students connect summer learning to their own values. Here’s an example: https://t.co/qjyOOgKjGL#satchat
A5 I only encourage students to keep reading during the summer. For those that enjoy writing I encourage them to make postcards of their special days in Buncee #satchat
Plan to join #WhatIsSchool with @deem_ellen and me on March 15, at 7:00 PM EST, as we take on "Dealing With TREACHERY, VILLAINY, JEALOUSLY and other Bad Things at School" #satchat
Programs for Ss to develop should be in place as well, not just Summer School for remediation, essential that all Ss realize skills need to be kept up. #SatChat
Yup! We had one snow day, lots of heavy snow had to be shoveled! Hoping we don’t have anymore- we would have to add on a day at the end of the school year. And, I am ready for spring!#satchat
A5 Keep my LMS alive and stay connected with them. Add links to activities, online book chats, discussion questions, funn6 videos. Ss will keep digging into what they love with a little nudge and and audience. #satchat
A5 Our district opens up the libraries and we offer free lunch. This is a great way to get kids in the door. And through the library programs they can do a ton of learning via Makerspaces, Coding, Lit cirlces, 3D printing and arts & crafts. #satchat
Q5: Motivating students to continue their learning during summer can be a challenge. What tips do you have for other educators to get students to engage in summer learning activities? #satchat
#satchat A5: Quite frankly, leave them alone. At best, challenge them. "You've spent a whole school yr. learning what we/society think you should learn. Maybe that's not what you wanted to learn. You have 2 months.....now is YOUR time! Go be curious!"
Q5: Motivating students to continue their learning during summer can be a challenge. What tips do you have for other educators to get students to engage in summer learning activities? #satchat
A5: Check out the Future Ready U course created by @DonWettrick. Great opportunity for students to connect with innovators and entrepreneurs #Satchathttps://t.co/q7p7qmERs2
A5: Remove the "stigma" that learning has to happen at school; #learning can happen anywhere! Everyone can learn something new everyday = #truth; make summers about growth in an area of passion for Ss; use tech to share their learning @pammoran#MPSVT#lifelonglearning#satchat
Q5. We need to start by closing the opportunity gap. Many ss don't have access. We need to go to them to start the motivation. https://t.co/Jno83ETy7b#satchat
A5: Another thought just came to mind- to keep students reading over the summer, teachers can challenge students by giving them a list of books to read. The following school year, you then see who read the most books. #satchat
A5: Summer reading is essential for students to maintain and continue building their reading skills. This summer, assign books that aren’t simply homework-based, but will make the child think on a much larger level. #satchat
I always ask prospective teachers "what are you reading?" which sets the tone and expectation that I'm looking for folks who consider themselves learners as well as teachers and who challenge themselves to keep learning! #satchat
My district just started keeping Elem Media Ctrs open at night - helps bring family/community together... I can't help but wonder about safety though? I guess they thought of that ahead of time... #satchat
For some of my Ss I don't want them to learn from their environment. I want to provide them with a safe area where they can be fed and enjoy the love of childhood through positive interactions with peers. The summer makes me cringe for some of my kiddos. #satchat
A5: Rethink what learning looks like in the summer. Offer students opportunities to explore and grow through experiences NOT school “work.” Work with the community to provide fun opportunities to view films, visit the library, visit the zoo, etc. #satchat
We've talked about altering summer reading. Why not have an open discussion board where they can ask questions and post their thoughts. Not required & not graded, just allow them a place to discuss what they're reading. #satchat
Yeah I learn from @edutopia and twitter but what really helps me is to stretch my imagination in the summer. On my list is @eveewing ‘s Electric Arches among other fiction & poetry #satchat A2
A5: Emphasizing to students and parents that learning is not all in books, written or online. LEARNING IS EXPERIENCES. Students need to go places, see things and do things with their hands. #satchat
A5: Provide Ss with high interest summer choice lists, provide parents with resources for summer learning, stay digitally connected via whatever means meet the needs of your community! #satchat
#satchat Thats great! You should blog about that if you haven’t already. I participated in a summer reading program at one school. Kids had to pick a group based on interests. Many still didn’t read, it seems.
A5
Partnerships within your community will help Ss continue their learning in the summer. Many summer camps for Ss to balance fun and getting ready for the next school year. #satchat
A5 Last year my Ss were very interested in #STEAM so I sent home some low-cost STEAM activities for families over the summer. Also continued to communicate w/families thru @Seesaw to encourage Ss to read over the summer! #satchat
A3 Just finished @DanielPink"When" and would recommend it to anyone who wants to see how time shapes behaviour and emotions. I am looking to read "Mindset" by Carol Dweck this summer, a classic that I haven't gotten around to yet. #satchat
Q3: Two part question... What book is on your list to read this summer? And what book would you recommend other educators read during summer break? #satchat
A5: Our students love anything tech-based. Online chats might be an idea that would engage students over the summer. Wouldn't it be awesome for Ts to establish a relationship with their Ss before they even walk through the classroom?
#satchat
A5: As a music teacher I try to get kids to join our summer enrichment program so they play their instrument every day. I also plan to share music and fun videos on my google classroom this summer so kids can stay engaged and excited until September! #satchat
A5: 2. Encourage students to keep a journal to regularly document their activities. Give guidelines about what they can think about or consider writing about, and build in the potential for them to use this journal to write a summary at the start of the new school year. #satchat
A5: do NOT say here is a book, you have a test the first day of school. I dreaded those summer reading projects the last two days before I went back to school! Ask Ss to participate in something meaningful to them. Something they’d be proud to share. #satchat
A4: It's all about building up the excitement and making sure educators understand WHY the professional learning will benefit them and their students. #satchat
A5 I try to give students recommendations on books that I know they will like, based off of what I have learned about them through our established relationship. #satchat
A4 we can create conditions that support efficacy, individual/collective, people who believe they make a diff about anything- life’s work -never stop seeking deeper learning about what they value &love #satchat@Jenni_Donohoo researcher author collective efficacy
Think I will write a book titled "Get It Your Damn Self" ... a self help book on how to believe in your ability to find your answers. A bit like what we expect from our kids. #satchat
Because jobs pay us to do things their way. Good teachers learn on their own -& most of us spend wks writing LPs all summmer - but if we expect them to do it our way, at our time, we pay them. #satchat
A4: We always take feedback and tailor our sessions to what they want to learn! They are instantly excited about it, because we provide what they request. #satchat
A5 use social media and challenges, show them books that are out there and intro to the library! Local library came to our school this year all 1st graders got library cards and we invite the library to school events throughout the year #satchat
Q5: Encourage unstructured "free" time where Ss can be creative thinkers without realizing they are learning. Encourage travel and time with family and friends. Learning will still happen-just a different kind of learning.#satchat
A5. We used @Flipgrid last summer to stay connected to each other! Kids showcased books read and adventures they had! Less like work and so beneficial! #family#Satchat
If I am helping with an interview that is always one of my Qs! I want someone who is a life long learner, even if its the newest Stephen King book. #satchat
A4. Several of us within my department discuss ideas about things we want to do or take courses. Most of us will be #lifelonglearning anyway so it doesn’t take much prodding. #satchat
Don’t ever give up on the most challenging students. Connect with them in fall, winter, spring and summer. Keep telling them you will never give up on them until they believe it in their hearts. #satchat#transformtheirconfidence#breakdownwalls#edchat
But we tolerate those that do with forced smiles and suppressed eye rolls. The profession is only as good as the lowest level of professionalism we tolerate in our circles. #satchat
Follow @HessEdward - he has great insight into the shift we need to make to make curricula about how we learn more than what and he will engage if you have questions! #satchat
Choice and voice is key. Students complain about reading 1 required book. But a summer @Flipgrid on a choice of books...now they're interested #satchat
Q5: Motivating students to continue their learning during summer can be a challenge. What tips do you have for other educators to get students to engage in summer learning activities? #satchat
A4 Get them to realize that PD is not just conferences and webinars. Professional Development is a wide-open concept. As long as you have clear goals and see how it will improve your practice the possibilities are endless. #satchat
#satchat No grade was really tied to the reading (which is better, but...) Sounds like your program was presented well to the readers. That does make a difference. :)
A5: Our district offers both reading &mer. This doesn't even include the amazing ways our Ts are motivating their Ss. Fun, creative ways 2 engage Ss in learning. It's also important 2 get the parents on board. Teamwork makes the dream work! #satchat
A6 I know a teacher who has created an amazing writing environment similar to @NaNoWriMo where students can share, offer feedback, and collaborate through Google docs and a Google site. Can’t share a link because it is within our division’s GAFE but it is an awesome idea! #satchat
A6. I attended the @PhillipsExeter summer writer’s conference. Learned the Harkness Method through weeklong exposure in a sample classroom & improved my own writing skills considerably. Summer “sandbox style” PD where you learn new pedagogy as both student AND teacher. #satchat
A5: We have 1:1 Chromebooks in our elementary buildings. I'd love to figure out a way to make them accessible to students over the summer so they can keep learning on sites like @zearned, @FrontRow, and @ProdigyGame, @Storybird, or just explore on their own. #satchat
A6 I know a teacher who has created an amazing writing environment similar to @NaNoWriMo where students can share, offer feedback, and collaborate through Google docs and a Google site. Can’t share a link because it is within our division’s GAFE but it is an awesome idea! #satchat
A6 At the camps @edenvillagecamp and @SummerTech, all learning is hands-on, creative, playful, deep, and rooted simultaneously in a clear set of organizational values and in the camper’s own values. We teachers could learn a lot from excellent summer programs. #satchat
Don’t ever give up on the most challenging students. Connect with them in fall, winter, spring and summer. Keep telling them you will never give up on them until they believe it in their hearts. #satchat#transformtheirconfidence#breakdownwalls#edchat
A5 Over the summer we set up fun and friendly reading competitions for students. One year we based around the Olympics connecting to mascots. They key is collaboration and a good kickoff for the summer - Looking forward to this summer @mclsnj@mr_kweiss@MrsHerrera_WCB#satchat
A5: Our vice principal puts together a resource of fun summer activities and local events for students to attend and sends it home to each family #satchat#welleagles@WellEagles
A4: I would use the @gafefsu metaphor: Do you want to be the Blockbusters teacher or the Netflix teacher?. You should always continue learning along with your students and summer learning is a good time for it. #satchat#gafefsu#spanishteachers
Really important thread! Sounds like a great topic for a future chat. How do we improve the reputation of our profession? What should we tolerate as professional educators and what are the non-negotiables? #satchat
A6: I worked with @WallInPrincipal to design a #read4fun summer reading initiative that went really well and launched with teachers making @Animoto clips to promote their choice reads. I can share our google doc if anyone wants to check it out! Huge participation! #satchat
A4 and provide summer opportunities that are flexible, intentional, and learning-centered .. thanks @MaureenMJensen for coaching and supporting this work in #acps#satchat
The Albemarle County Writing Collaborative @ELAinACPS design team met yesterday. Summer Institute educators will participate in three strands: Developing Pedagogy, Teacher as Writer, and Literacy Leadership. We only a few spots left. Join us! https://t.co/gbuvuvVxDq
@iste conference is great. Our school hosted a summer workshop with modest stipend for teachers and we had a waitlist. In person #summerPD seems to be most successful still #satchat
A5 Faculty and students read community book, as well as choice books by genre (students recommended in prior year). Summer homework is controversial, but math classes have review problems to prevent "math slide." Higher level courses may or may not have summer work. #satchat
Great post Jerry ... respect starts with US ... if we do not respect what we do, How can we expect others to do the same? I should get the same "Thank You for Service" for being a teacher as I get for being a Marine. #SemperFi#satchat
In reply to
@cybraryman1, @AnibalPachecoIT, @colonelb
A6) Great? More adult based but #edcamps have been huge for teachers/professionals / now intrigued of how to target similar event for students 🤔 #satchat
A6: We run a STEM camp all summer long for younger Ss. Different topics/projects each week, and coordinated with our sports camps so Ss can do both. #satchat
A5. Help them find summer programs that suit their passions. They really like things related to what they want to do, not what they have to do. #satchat
Q5: Motivating students to continue their learning during summer can be a challenge. What tips do you have for other educators to get students to engage in summer learning activities? #satchat
A5: summer learning begins during the school year by developing the tools for learning along w/ allowing Ss opportunities to investigate & wonder, analyze & discover. #satchat
Q5: Motivating students to continue their learning during summer can be a challenge. What tips do you have for other educators to get students to engage in summer learning activities? #satchat
A5: Feed your soul. Find activities that expand your horizons and invigorate your passions. Follow your bliss. #funmatters#satchat (advice for adults too)
Q5: Motivating students to continue their learning during summer can be a challenge. What tips do you have for other educators to get students to engage in summer learning activities? #satchat
A6 The best summer learning I've seen is with a variety of summer school opportunities in our district- reading, math, cooking, PE, coding, creation, and music to name a few. #satchat
A6 UNC music workshop. Ss work on their skills individually with private lessons and as a group in choral music in an extremely supportive environment where they can be themselves #satchat
A6 Our Read to Achieve summer camps have been successful. We have worked on filling in those reading gaps while partnering with our community to provide Ss with meaningful learning experiences for almost a month in the summer. #satchat
#satchat A5. When I was in a school as the Media Specialist, I prepared and advertised a reading list including annotations about the titles. I also gave the list to the neighborhood library.
A6: I've seen Ss use @Flipgrid to share books they've read, share places they've been - Google Classroom used for Ss to communicate about assignments over the summer! #satchat
Summer reflection- survey ur students about ur class, or 4admin, ur staff, students & parents. Make it anonymous & ask them what went well & what they'd like 2see to make it better. Read & Reflect over the summer w/a plan 4improvement in fall. If u don't ask u won't know #satchat
A4: I would use the #gafefsu metaphor: Do you want to be the Blockbusters teacher or the Netflix teacher?. You should always continue learning along with your students and summer learning is a good time for it. #satchat#spanishteachers
A6 My best summer learning in the past with students was working with those who have failed HS classes. We tried to find meaningful/passionate projects for students to demonstrate their learning. Students designed assessments. All about building relationships! #satchat
A5 Over the summer we set up fun reading competitions for students. One year we based around the Olympics and mascots. They key is collaboration and a good kickoff for the summer - Looking forward to this summer @mclsnj@mr_kweiss@MrsHerrera_WCB@mbradle00257518#satchat
A5 Some Ss will do this naturally. Important we don’t cause Cognitive Overload with Ss. When the school year finishes 5-6 days before Christmas, their focus should be on family time. The Finland research on the importance of this & play has relevance @pasi_sahlberg#satchat
A6 literally loved it so much as a student that it decided my college for me and I've kept returning to volunteer every summer that it didn't conflict with the school calendar #satchat
A6: Tie typical summer activities to your topics of discussion from the previous school year. Continue activating that knowledge and applying it in practical ways - keep those synapses firing! #satchat
A6: When I was at @PohatSchool, we simply opened the school doors for Ss. They came in & read/played games in the library, no pressure, all choice & very relax. #SatChat
Wow! Thank you so much Brittany! Honored to hear you enjoyed our books! Thanks for the shoutout! Have a wonderful weekend. :) #LearnLAP#MakeItReal#satchat
A6: At my school in NYC a few years ago, @ClassTechTips and I planned a weeklong field trip camp for students to learn about urban farming, organic food, etc. Was so great! #satchat
It is a ton of work for the teacher because she assigns badges and students can submit requests to give each other badges. She's managing all that manually. But students love it and are very engaged with each other's writing. DM me - I will try to connect you. #satchat
A5. I think one of the issues is teachers’ traditional views on summer learning activities. For int’l schools, summers often = traveling. So I ask Ss to write travel journals, take photos, write itineraries, use L1 with family... And take books with you! #satchat
Engage students in using literacy skills to read the world: Students watch segments of broadcast news--& "read" for point of view (any bias or slant evident?). They listen, observe, take notes, collect evidence...then create arguments, share & debate #satchat#readtheworld@ncte
A6: Again we utilize our after school program which runs a full day program for our students in the summer. They incorporate field trips, hands on learning, and FUN! Our public library also sponsors makerspace activities for our kids. #satchat
It could be a great idea for older students and colleagues to connect through social media year round with Twitter and Instagram to post learning, links, book recs, etc. We always say or sign yearbooks with "Keep in touch" so let's do it! #BookSnaps#RethinkELA#satchat
A6 Maybe not best, but most memorable: we hadn’t finished our read-aloud book a few years ago, so I recorded it and posted it on @edmodo. Some even went to the library or grandma’s to find a computer and listen. I did a couple more when they asked. #satchat
#satchat A6: I'd say I haven't created summer learning that was like YES! to any teens. Lol. But they don't mind being asked to watch a French film and share about it. Learning without stress is ideal for teens in the summer.
Love that you refer to them as 'opportunities'. We need to make sure Ss see these as opportunities as opposed to something they 'have to do'. Mindset for the Ss is huge. #satchat
Honestly I am not sure...but I am really interested in finding out what ways would be engaging, fun, & interesting for Ss to learn over the summer #satchat
A6: I helped connect a student to an arts day camp. A language barrier had prevented this in the past. Made a difference for that student. Many of my students just need experiences outside their 4 walls during the summer. #satchat
A6: I make each student a special poetry binder at the beginning of the year. They watercolor their own cover & we add poems weekly. By the end of the year they have a great collection of songs & poems to keep. #satchat
A6 music camps and workshops have so much potential to be life-changing for students when the individual and the group both receive emphasis #satchat#musedchat
A6: I taught summer school for many years as a classroom teacher, the learning was priceless, to the students and to me as a teacher. Some truly authentic learning in a brief time, challenging and rewarding to all! #satchat
A6: I’ve seen many good summer learning experiences over the summer in various districts that I’ve been part of...the best usually involve project based learning that kids find FUN! #satchat
A6 - Some of the best.... We provided a transition Kindergarten program for a our little guys to support readiness. I've also seen students take selfies of reading and post to social media with a #.
#satchat@HeatherLieberm2
A6: I was at a school that had summer mission trips to different locations. Ss learned culture, service, language, independence, faith, friendships, and how to be a good person. #satchat
I think the definition of "need" in this sentence is important. I want to learn. But I struggled for years to feed my single income family on a teachers salary. #satchat
There were so many great ideas presented in this #satchat that I’m both excited and overwhelmed! If you choose to do 10, you’ll likely do none. Find 1️⃣ that resonates with you and really dig in! Can’t wait to hear how it works out with everyone!
A6: I feel like it is very important for a community to offer many free resources. Our library does a wonderful job at this. I want to find better ways to target those Ss who struggle to attend these events due to funds and resources at home. #satchat
A6: I led a summer reading camp, where each week had a theme. At the end of the week, we took a field trip that matched our theme. My students were SO excited to explore parts of their own city that they’d never been to. #satchat
Nearly every PD book I've seen recommended on this #satchat was written by a white man. Think about the systems of oppression you are replicating when you don't even bother to deviate from dominant culture teachings in your own learnings
That's the end of #satchat for today!
Thanks to our dedicated PLN for another awesome convo
Next week our topic is Growing Real Readers with @beritgordon
Hope you can join us then. Same bat channel (Twitter), same bat time (7:30am EST) hopefully someone will get the reference
A6: We had a grant-funded STEM Enrichment Camp for several years. I taught a class on bridges which included field trips, design, and building prototypes. Still one of my favourite summer activities for students. #satchat
A6. We're yet to step into a summer student learning environment but summers are a great opportunity to take everyone out in the open and organize activities that teach teamwork. One thing students will need throughout their lives. #satchat
As a program director for a YMCA camp many years ago, we worked with a local organization to get the children of inmates two weeks at camp. Kids need to connect with nature. #satchat
A6 - Some of the best.... We provided a transition Kindergarten program for a our little guys to support readiness. I've also seen students take selfies of reading and post to social media with a #.

Thank you ALL for helping me grow as an educator by providing thought-provoking Q's & A's each week #satchat#PLN#lovemyPLN Another great Twitter chat in the books!
A6: I coordinate our district’s Explore and Soar summer program. Teachers can conduct courses on what they are passionate about. Students get an opportunity to tap into interesting content https://t.co/V0POM4yNSJ#satchat
A6: Can’t take credit, but the best summer PD for students I’ve witnessed has been through my son’s experience in Scouting. Hands-on, project-based, reading and research, personalized, relevant. Has me thinking- how can we incorporate “merit badges” for students? #satchat
A6: Our district’s summer enrichment program. Kids pick 5 classes to attend based on their interests and attend every day in July. They get to learn, be active, make music, and have fun. Their progress is amazing and it’s great for me to teach a wide variety of students. #satchat
MITili Director, Dr. John Gabrieli, has done extensive research in finding how learning challenges occur and how we can reach those learners. Reach Every Reader hopes to propel that research!

Some... and how to run a gamified class with points, leveling up, etc. I did learn how to ingrain gaming tools in all contents. If you’re into games in the classroom, you’ll enjoy it! #satchat

A6. I would say that using @Flipgrid for our summer adventures was AMAZING! I also want to schedule a meeting a couple times over summer- library, park, zoo- def. want to do that this summer to stay connected to MY KIDS❤️ #family#satchat
A6: If students still have access to your LMS over the summer you can post *engaging* activities or challenges. Honestly, just keeping their minds critically thinking and problem solving over the summer makes a huge difference. #satchat
There's no one to trust except maybe the two of us
But that's in the past the place where I m living is haunting broken dreams

A6: If you have middle or high school students, find a teen institute like @CGTI12 and send them there! Leadership training coupled with community action planning! #satchat
A5. Play time! Students need to be stay out of their classrooms as much as possible. That reduces their inclination to using tech and makes them more active physically and mentally. #satchat
A6: STEM camps are engaging, project based and so much fun! As a science teacher I hear students reflecting on their experiences throughout the year and connecting it to new learning! #satchat#scienceisfun
A6 when kids and teachers learn side by side it makes for deep learning - we use “summer school” as summer prof learning opps to innovate experiences such as CoderDojo embedded comp thinking in learning #satchat
Oh no, I'm just a Parent, I've NO interest in being a T. I've explored the option, realizing, staying in my lane would be best. 😍 I applaud you all. #SatChat
A6 One of my students' fave summer activities was growing plants of their choice and observing them from seed. I did this as a child and continue to do with my own child. Many of my high school students had never done this. It is wonderful to watch a living thing grow. #satchat
A6 Summer camps offered by our district. One is more camp-like w/ different classes like art, cooking, etc. Other is more structured to help struggling readers, but still offers fun, engaging activities like @breakoutEDU and coding! #satchat
I agree!!! Read an article a few months ago about how young Ss are not playing outside as much as they should so they are not developing a proper core which relates to poor fine and gross motor skills. #satchat
New website just for educators to collaborate about books they are reading. Please take a minute to check it out and then join #BookCampPD at 9:00 EST this morning. https://t.co/S5pzTtgW6A#satchat

Is news biased? What is the bias or slant presented by a particular news outlet, & how is that expressed? We can engage our students in this essential inquiry--equipping them to read not just print texts but also the world. #satchat#medialiteracy
You know what’s the worst? Summer school. I wish we could totally revamp this & make it a pls r where kids can get a step up, not just catch up. #satchat
