#6thchat is used to chat, collaborate, and grow with other sixth grade educators from around the globe. Each session we discuss a topic voted on by #6thchat participants. It's a great way to help grow your PLN and share ideas with others.
Welcome to #6thchat! Please introduce yourself, where you teach, and what subjects! I'm Kristin and teach ELA and SS in Lansing, MI! I will moderate tonight! Welcome!
Tonight's chat will "infuse" creativity into our questions and, I hope, your responses! Be sure to follow one another, and explore each other's creative responses throughout the #6thchat!
This is a hard one. Math would be an ice cream sundae because it has so many different "flavors" and "layers" to learn; if you don't keep using it, the concepts can melt away from you, too. #6thchat
Ooooo, this is good. I would say it is a birch tree because some text structures are easy to peel away and understand while other are a bit more hidden like the rings within the tree. #6thchat
A2) 7 Billion People by Englebert Humperdinck here https://t.co/ARfhP53aGM for a population project; Ss select a country to study during the year of World Geo, could have class add facts about their country to a class music collage w/this as a background. #6thchat
A1a: If world geography were a hat it would be a magician's hat. Lots of room to explore and there are always secrets to uncover when you get deeper in. #6thchat
Just leaving a powerful twit chat #FutureDriven#MSAAchat ! #6thchat Karen here! I am an admin intern. I will love this chat too. Creativity, 21st century skill!
A2: Waiting on the World to Change by John Mayer. When I teach about world geography, kids often look for "facts" about our world then realize that change is happening daily. #6thchat
A2: #6thchat - I'm at a loss! I'll just ask the students what music they feel is connected to what we're studying. Seems like cheating and the best answer at the same time.
A2 I always think Billy Joel's We Didn't Start the Fire is a fun way to fit in a quick piece of research. Find at least one thing you don't know anything about and learn something new! #6thchathttps://t.co/6qiRstgc4V
A3) Ask Ss to bring in a healthy snack and then write similes and metaphors; post them on a @padlet and then ask Ss to use them in a story, response or poem. #6thchat
I know the crew at #sstlap have had students add lyrics to the end of this song to relate to more recent world history (beyond the events of the song). #6thchat

A1: of world geography were a hat it would be one of those hats you win at amusement parks that has all the tentacles. There are so many places to go, filled with so many colors, & so much colorful history! #6thchat
A3: We used to do a Tour of Europe with my 7th grade classes many years ago. We would study the geography, history, current events, etc. of various countries, then at the end of the week, watch Bizarre Foods and then sample a food from the country. #6thchat
A3 As part of our gamified independent reading, we recently had students create something edible to depict theme or characterization of one of the main characters in their books. Students had to justify the use of ingredients with text evidence. Creativity bonanza! #6thchat
A3: We use soundation (simple online music site). Drag and drop beats and samples. Cheap midi keyboard works on chromebooks. Ss try to write lyrics or poems to match. #6thchat
We did six word memoirs last year, and I had Ss post songs they thought would be great for a background music to our illustrated memoirs...they do have great ideas! #6thchat
A4) Migration! Found several cool photos on human migration. Have Ss explore them, and write a poem about what they've learned about migration, immigration and emigration illustrating their words with artwork. #6thchat
Oh yes! That's great! My son did his science fair project on this and had cups of sugar to represent what was in each can/bottle. Eye opening when you see it in solid form! #6thchat
Their connections are sometimes better than anything I could come up with! And I think they're more into it if it's "their" music - which is so hard to keep up with. #6thchat
A4: As a preview to our conversation on population growth, I would use this image as a warm up prompt to have them determine what we would be getting to next. Then, I could use this to have Ss write probing questions to research. #6thchat
Peru! #6thchat This a picture of peasant living in the mountains in the Andes of South America. What triggers? How is this similar & different from life in the mountains in Colorado?
A5) First, here's an article w/some info/ideas. https://t.co/j8HLLLFtrW I see lots of ideas in this article I had not considered (or haven't done). I hadn't considered a classroom Instagram account. #6thchat
A5: I have used Instagram with a class hashtag to have Ss find examples of the geography concepts we discussed in class in their neighborhoods. Then, we look at them in class and discuss why it is a good example or not. #6thchat
Oh, that's a good idea. I have used https://t.co/GSE1AhQKia before so that could also be a fun activity for Ss to get into poetry writing! Thanks for the idea! #6thchat
A5) I love the idea of #booksnaps, where students take a picture and use bitmojis, emojis, etc to demonstrate thinking. Need to find a good way to use with Chromebooks #6thchat
A4 Mood artwork: Could have students study the image and play different kinds of music. Then, ask students to analyze the part of the image they are drawn to based on the mood of the music. What creates mood? #6thchathttps://t.co/W0Wzb1GBhc
A5 My 6th grade SS teammates recently had students make instagram accounts/posts written from the perspective of early man. They were AWESOME! So great to blend the ancient with the new! @mrsmegtreg@SchoolWithMsA#6thchat
A6) Take a picture or piece of art and divide it up into sections; let groups analyze their "slice" of art to "visualize" what the artist is trying to share; then have Ss put all parts together, and see how stories come together, or change. #6thchat
For a Reading Month project one year, I had students create Fakebook pages for characters in the class novel we were doing as a read-aloud. Ss really got into it and used quotations and interactions between characters on their "wall" to summarize the novel's key parts. #6thchat

Wow #6thchat lots of great ideas here tonight. I can see using many of them...in the very near future! I will have to harvest the ideas as I may have missed some with the stream flowing so quickly! #6thchat
A7) Have legos or play-doh out for Ss to make something related to concept; time Ss and have them share out ideas at end; have Ss take a word out of a deck of possibilities and use it in a quickwrite. #6thchat
A6: When teaching different forms of government, having Ss investigate how each government type would view various scenarios. This allows them to get the perspective of people living in different countries under different rule. #6thchat
This is a great way to do this. I can see having different Ss in the class representing different areas of gov't; great role playing opportunities here. #6thchat
A7 We just started our own Creativity Project because we are motivated by @colbysharp and his new book. We are all working on our prompts right now. #6thchat
A6 I have had students do "Chopped" SS projects. They have to use what is in the "basket" to tell about an event. Had parents in to be judges. #6thchat
Role playing definitely kicks up the creativity a notch. I have a group who is doing an Africa Today project using sock puppets. I'm very excited to see their work progress. #6thchat
I think they are pretty excited. We are all putting our challenges in sealed envelopes and then next week we will draw and work on our responses. #6thchat
Oh my gosh, my book just arrived in the mail today!! Great minds! I was thinking this would be a fun way to connect classrooms next year (sharing prompts across classes). #6thchat

We should plan to try this via an online tool or even snail mail. How fun for kids to collaborate with kiddos from our #6thchat rooms? Let's make a plan! #flatclassroom
No, I haven't but I will have to. I thought about doing it for a writing project too. They would have to write a story based on what was in the basket. They could work in pairs or groups. #6thchat
A8 Any time you combine objects or ideas that don't seemingly fit and challenge students to find connections, creativity blossoms. Also love the addition of different constraints to an assignment. Forces creative problem solving! #6thchat
#6thchat thank you so much for all these ideas! I am definitely using many of them! Our kiddos are lucky to have so many creative Ts out there! I will see you all next week!
Thanks, as always, Kristin, for inspiring such a great chat chock full of ideas! Can't wait for our 6thchat Creativity Project collaboration! Thanks all for sharing your awesomeness! #6thchat
Thanks for recharging my creative battery tonight, #6thchat crew! I'll be looking through this feed for lesson plan ideas as we get closer to the end of the school year.
Thanks for leading the way tonight, @mrskochheiser!
