Good morning, #HackLearning ... I am so excited to facilitate our conversation this morning ...
Sylvia, Academic Coach / ENG Tchr at Title 1 HS in Tampa, FL (and wife, mother, community leader ... ) BUSY LADY!
Joy from IL here for #HackLearning, still trying to learn how to manage my personal and professional time... Probably will have trouble w/it until I retire...
Good morning, #hacklearning crew! Aubrey, ed tech specialist in CO here a couple of minutes late - maybe I need to work on managing my time on Sunday mornings :-).

Morning, #hacklearning. I'm Brian. I teach middle-school students English in CO. I'd like state for the record that procrastination is, in fact, a time-management strategy :) (Your results may vary.)
Good morning! I am a TIRED 7th Grade Science Teacher in Frankfort, KY. It’s been a long weekend of protesting and standing up for Public ED! #hacklearning
A1: I’m great at scheduling the things I HAVE to do, but need to find more time for the things I WANT to do: more reading, personal writing, time with family and more. How do you strike a work/life balance? #HackLearning
A1: I think time management for me is a challenge when it comes to time "wasters". If I am opening the same email several times without answering, or checking social media too often, I am taking away from more valuable endeavors. #HackLearning
A1: Giving as much adequate feedback as I want to. However, now that I don’t grade every little thing, I am able to accomplish this a little bit better.
#hacklearning

A1: the biggest time management challenge for me is balancing the immediate needs of teaching (students, planning, marking) with all the extra stuff like budgeting, emails, administration, etc. #HackLearning
I used to find it more difficult to say "I'd love to help you with that - can you wait until Wednesday when my time is not so stretched?" Not everything can wait 4 days, but some things can and I now give myself permission to not handle everything as a crisis.
#HackLearning
A1 A1 My greatest challenge is fighting the work-life balance. … This changed when I almost lost my Dad … now I leave my work at work. I may learn at home, but I don’t work there.
#HackLearning
A1: I struggle prioritizing projects/tasks. I have a dozen projects/ideas but also have immediate tasks that HAVE to be done. It's a balancing act that I don't feel I do well most of the time.
#HackLearning
I think prioritizing. Here are some thoughts I tried to put down for me to be more efficient. #HackLearning Tips to increase leadership efficiency https://t.co/9joSVAGZ9A
Good morning #hacklearning#PLN! I am working on a presentation about improving teacher prep programs. I am looking for some veteran teachers to share some wisdom./ stories. If you are interested in sharing, click below

A1 For me the challenge is being efficient at work, while at the same time building relationships with people. These two things are sometimes one in the same, but other times are not. #hacklearning
A1. Finding enough time to do everything. Things pop up in the middle of other things. Remembering everything. Ss ask for things verbally then I forget unless I take care of it in the moment. Always say email it to me. At least then I have a reminder. #HackLearning
A1: the biggest time management challenge for me is balancing the immediate needs of teaching (students, planning, marking) with all the extra stuff like budgeting, emails, administration, etc. #HackLearning
A1: At school, I'm good at managing my time. I struggle at home. I want to balance home and school while at home. I took some tips from @Angela_Watson about chunking tasks. That's helped. #HackLearning
I agree ... I find that my personal reading usually is invaded by other obligations ... my summer reading lists keep turning in to fall and spring while my collection increases all the time! #HackLearning :)
At work the other day, we talked about needing time to be bored, because that sparks creativity. Anyone have a strategy for making this happen? #hacklearning

Really good point! So often we put off self-care - which is the ultimate irony! How can we best care for others if we don't take care of ourselves. Well said! #HackLearning
If you doubt the effectiveness of how you allocate instructional time, you are underestimating how valuable every minute is. Don't end class 4 minutes early and have students wait for the bell. What could you and your students accomplish in those 4 minutes? #HAckLearning
Craig from PA. A1 - The hardest part is simply all the professional and personal tasks that happen on a daily basis. From teaching to parenting to my own time, it’s challenging to do all of them well. #hacklearning
A1 I often schedule some of items I don’t always get to but need to complete. I need to get better at scheduling personal time outside of work. #HackLearning
A1 For me the challenge is being efficient at work, while at the same time building relationships with people. These two things are sometimes one in the same, but other times are not. #hacklearning
I think I may actually have to schedule this 'down' time as odd as that seems! I like the idea of a soft start to my day too. I wrote about what it might look like in PD here: https://t.co/KFOO4p8n5V#HackLearning
Suzy, I found this to be true ... I used to keep my email open all day & discovered I lost a lot of time to other people’s emergencies. I had to start shutting all that down & schedule times to work on email, etc. #HackLearning
A1: Learning to manage your time also means learning to say no sometimes => my biggest time management problems occur because I take on too much, and distribute too little #hacklearning
Sad that we feel we need to schedule personal time, but if it works, we won't be needing to schedule it anymore. It'll just happen naturally! #FingersCrossed#hacklearning
I love this! I also hate seeing teachers and students count down the days until the school year is over. Celebrate and keep going strong instead! #HackLearning

Still a work in progress .. I think the idea of urgent and important - the 4 square graphic on Q2 would help — I used to use it with sticky notes so that I could keep my priorities my priorities. #HackLearning
I.E. - Only checking email at home once a day. While there, also checking social media ONCE a day. Then they're not distractions the rest of the day. When I put work in online gradebook - only twice a week. Chunk tasks to they're faster. #hacklearning
A2: I recently discovered Google Keep! It’s a handy way to organize notes & pictures, set reminders, & move seamlessly bwn phone & computer access. I also use Calendly for setting up appointments! It’s frees, saves a lot of time, & is very easy to use! #hacklearning
A2: My google and iCal are needed greatly for me. I also take use of Google Hangouts for open chats to double check in appointments and events. #hacklearning
I feel like chores can be overwhelming so I started the 15min increments trick. It gets things done and evolves into ‘keeping up’ with it all. Especially big things like garage and basement cleaning! #HackLearning
Good morning, #HackLearning, Mark here, elementary principal in Hopkins, MN, checking in late. In the midst of our first blizzard here in 15 years. And, it's mid-April.
A1 I agree with you Rhonda, time management is a critical issue for me to. I never seem to have enough time. (Carol ELA Consultant from Long island) #HackLearning)
#HackLearning I find that saying No to colleagues who need my help is difficult, thus what I do for them greatly reduces the time I need what I need to do. I end up staying at school until 7 p.m. many nights, just to catch up.
A1) Here’s an honest answer for you: for a lot of the time I have available with which to work in the evenings, I’m too tired to function. I can do 4x the work between the hours of 4am-6am than the whole of the after school time. #morningperson#hacklearning
Suzy, I found this to be true ... I used to keep my email open all day & discovered I lost a lot of time to other people’s emergencies. I had to start shutting all that down & schedule times to work on email, etc. #HackLearning
What’s actually helped me the most is the 1-10 rule! I place a number of 1-10 on the immediate importance of a task. If it’s a 1, then I know I have some time. If it’s a 10, I realize it must be done now! Easy and it works. #hacklearning
A2: Calendar on my phone--ALWAYS use that. Probably my go-to. I also use my Lists app to keep my to-do list updated and on hand. And I keep my phone on me to check email on the fly. #HackLearning Anyone heard of the Boomerang app for email?!
I'm underlining the word 'continuously' because this is not a set-it-and-forget-it operation. Plus, there are times we might purposefully WANT our lives imbalanced for a while, to commit all in for some defined work or home priority. #hacklearning
I have given up on time management ... i have accepted there is not enough time in the day to accomplish everything ... I do what I can and accept my shortcomings ... if I get written up for that ... ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ #hacklearning
I LOVE Google Keep to keep my organized across schools and devices. I have a old-fashioned notebook of ideas that follows me everywhere as well! #HackLearning
How many times has a warm up gone too long and the best part of the lesson got cut short? Set limits on yourself so the key learning components don't get sacrificed. Think of your transitions as priorities, not a chronological sequence. #HackLearning
A2 If found that creating a comprehensive family calendar on my phone helped me not to overbook. (I also use alarms for my chats … if my alarm goes off, I have a choice – family or Twitter … it’s a 50-50 win!)
#HackLearning
A2: I like to do many easy things in the AM - get many checked off my list. Then when I'm doing a longer task (feedback on writing), I chunk the time and give myself rewards (reading two chapters in my book) before I go back to work. #hacklearning
I have a not-fancy-but-it-works method: A draft in my GMail that is actually a to-do list. Tasks with a deadline get assigned a day (MON - Do this), less urgent just go on the list. I copy/paste/reshuffle as needed.
#hacklearning
A2 Some of my biggest things I wait to do until summer. Otherwise, I chunk my duties and give myself breaks in between for stuff I love to do (like right now) #HackLearning
#HackLearning Not so much a tool but a strategy I learned that helps me be more productive is leaving school by 4 p.m. as much as possible and resting.
A2. I try to tackle emails from oldest to newest (keep in inbox until addressed) or hardest to easiest. Feedback on work from turned in first to last. Other stuff is where it gets fuzzy. This chart might be helpful going forward. #HackLearning
A2: Digital tools allow us to manage many of our "to-do" list items remotely or on the go - however, we can't forget the importance of being present - do what you can in person, face to face #hacklearning
A2: I have a white board in my office with various tasks and projects listed for the school. I try to keep them color-coded by order of completion. One color for immediate, one for next couple weeks/months and one for summer. #hacklearning
Good morning, #HackLearning, Mark here, elementary principal in Hopkins, MN, checking in late. In the midst of our first blizzard here in 15 years. And, it's mid-April.
A2 - just mentioned the 1-10 rule. Also, I’m sure many of you are the: “never say no to anybody teacher!” I am! But I now am honest enough to give time guidelines, instead of just saying I’ll do it now. #HackLearning
A2: I use a good ole-fashioned planner. Pen-to-paper is powerful for me, as the process of writing down plans is practical & concrete. I forget less that way. #HackLearning
A2: Balancing all our duties is not fun and games, but if we don't plan time for the required tasks, they will stress us out. Set time aside for paperwork and other professional obligations that come along with the job. #HackLearning
I love Google Mail's Boomerang. It allows me to schedule emails in the future and reminds me of emails that have not been responded to yet. Saves me a lot of time. #HackLearning
A2: I do a lot of personal self-care tasks before work, otherwise they don't happen. Even though it means waking up at 4am. Helps me set the day well. #hacklearning
Good morning, #HackLearning, Mark here, elementary principal in Hopkins, MN, checking in late. In the midst of our first blizzard here in 15 years. And, it's mid-April.
I need to just stick to something ... I find myself trying out "something else" thinking it will provide magic ... what a waste! I just need to stick with "it".
#HackLearning
A2: I use my digital calendar, it’s always available at a glance, and a paper datebook for daily changes then I can cross check changes at the end of the day 😊 whatever works for you! #HackLearning
Hi, by the way! Jumping in half-way through! A2) After I read The Checklist Manifesto, I'm thinking I really should make a morning checklist and an after school checklist so I can be more efficient about the things I have to do every day. #hacklearning
A White Board sounds like a great idea! I need to add that to my work space! (Now that I think about it, I do use my whiteboard for testing information ... that would be an easy #HackLearning task to try this week! #HackLearningDaily )
I love Google Mail's Boomerang. It allows me to schedule emails in the future and reminds me of emails that have not been responded to yet. Saves me a lot of time. #HackLearning
I LOVE this graphic! This would be a great PD activity for teachers. They could label each of the circles and then realize how nothing will get done well unless we take action. I may have to create a graphic and will share it here! THANK YOU! #HackLearning
A2: I have gone back to a notebook & post-its. Easy to capture and then using a decision making matrix helps me categorize priority & urgency.
#HackLearning
A2 Nugget via author Jim Collins: Work is infinite; time is finite. So manage latter, not former. In my view, this again comes down to prioritizing & communicating well re: choices we make, intentions behind them #hacklearning
If you doubt the effectiveness of how you allocate instructional time, you are underestimating how valuable every minute is. Don't end class 4 minutes early and have students wait for the bell. What could you and your students accomplish in those 4 minutes? #HAckLearning

A2:looking at each week and planning out the time I don’t have due to meetings, duties, etc. so I can capitalize on the time I do. Sometimes it comes down to packing the right lunch so I can stand at the copy machine and eat on a busy day. #HackLearning
A2: Balancing all our duties is not fun and games, but if we don't plan time for the required tasks, they will stress us out. Set time aside for paperwork and other professional obligations that come along with the job. #HackLearning
When you have many things to do, force yourself to focus on one at a time. Get it done and move on to the next thing. You'll be more productive if you don't fret about "all the things I have to do". #HackLearning
A2: Ultimately, I just have to have grace with myself too. I don't want to constantly feel behind. Sometimes I just need to let go of my own expectations of myself.
#hacklearning
I also love Toodledo - I can prioritize my To Dos into NEED to do NOW, later, before school gets out, at home, and before I fall asleep... #hacklearning
I always have something I can work on with me
I drive at better traffic times and if early no problem, I just pull out my stuff and get it done.
#hacklearning planning time well is also key for me
A2 - Besides the 1-10 rule I mentioned, part of time management is making change. People who are always doing something have trouble doing nothing! We must learn to actually relax for short moments. We can’t make excuses for our latest j of time skills. #HackLearning
On my to-read list: _When_ by @DanielPink. https://t.co/AHZg6rC5m5 Seems relevant to this morning's #hacklearning topic. If it's anything like his previous _Drive_, it'll be full of actionable ideas & hacks.
A2: I use my @GoogleKeep for items that come up while I’m out of the building at a tech meeting, but in my office I go old school with whiteboards and magnetic clips to hold documents or memos!! #HackLearning#gwinchat
A3: Listening to podcasts while I am driving/working out.
Asking students to do things with @Screencastify and @Flipgrid so I can listen to them on the go. #hacklearning
Because I travel so much, sometimes my 16 year old daughter just wants to be with me. We will schedule work time when we're both doing work. While the time isn't of the highest quality, we're still together and both being productive. #HackLearning
A3: My extra time? Always having a device, a book and a notebook for when unexpected downtime appears, like when I wait for my children at practices! I am a true
multi-tasker. #HackLearning
A3. Provide a lot of verbal feedback when Ss are working. Catches misconceptions immediate and reduces amount of written feedback for later. Frees up time. #HackLearning
A2. My early weekend time is the perfect time for me to accomplish the highly cognitive demands tasks of my work. It's not a chore for me then. and I can think more clearly and deeply on my couch before the sun rises with a hot cup of coffee. #HackLearning
A3 I don’t grade everything anymore … practice is practice … game day is what counts! So final assessments only (then flexibility with time to master standards.) This gives me more time for things that are imp't to my balance.
#HackLearning
I schedule everything. When I didn't include things like family and self - you can guess what got missed. Now I block out time on my calendar to be a mom, wife, and healthy person. #HackLearning
A3: in a pinch, I find extra time at the bottom of a cup of coffee at 8 or 9pm. Don't do it often, but sometimes it helps me stay focused for a couple extra hours when nothing else is pulling at my attention. #HackLearning
A3: School libraries help me hack time, I take advantage of time between, before and after T sessions, by ducking into the library to get work done! 😉 better than an office!#HackLearning
A3: I love my 30 minute commute. There are many safe ways to use that time. Great for brainstorming & even for orally writing drafts. I'll often use my voice-memo tool to review my crazy thinking later on when I am not behind the wheel. #HackLearning
Prioritze yourself in order to be the best for students, teachers, families and friends: If schools are to genuinely be places of wonder and joy, then we need to make sure that the adults are feeling that way too! => "a heallthier me for a better we" #hacklearning
Once I started having students submit work on Schoology or posting work to their own Google sites, I started reading it and giving feedback while waiting for gymnastics practice to end. I added the Schoology app and the Google Drive app to my phone. #hacklearning
A3: 1) Delegate - others (including kids!) can help. 2) Find other ways for students to get feedback besides from the teacher (self-reflection, feedback from each other, etc). #hacklearning
A2. My early weekend time is the perfect time for me to accomplish the highly cognitive demands tasks of my work. It's not a chore for me then. and I can think more clearly and deeply on my couch before the sun rises with a hot cup of coffee. #HackLearning
A3 - Early morning and late night pick me ups. Most days I find at least a few minutes to be alone in the morning or late at night. They really help me stay on task and also grounded. #HackLearning
A3 google classroom all your work. Given how terrible traffic is in Manila, a 15 minute commute can become a 45-1h30m one, I can check and give feedback to all my students on the ride home #HackLearning
#hacklearning A3: Create Google Slide daily b4 I leave with next day's agenda and objectives for classroom display. Pass Fail grades on in-class work. Spot check for errors. Gamification allows immediate real-time feedback!
A3: Listening to podcasts while I am driving/working out.
Asking students to do things with @Screencastify and @Flipgrid so I can listen to them on the go. #hacklearning
Yes!! I recently jumped on the podcast-train & now I'm hooked! While I'm driving, walking the dog, chores around the house. It's a great way to be productive! #HackLearning
A2 The matrix headings and general ideas are useful, but I would suggest a more collaborative and less hierarchical underpinning. Beyond increased efficiency in getting things done, it builds a sense of team.
#HackLearning
A3: Review your day - Spend 5-10 minutes reviewing your task list every day before you leave school. Give yourself credit for achieving. If you think your day’s efficiency fell short, decide what you’ll do differently tomorrow. #hacklearning
A3: Podcasts when I drive or walk the dog, meal prep some on Sundays, and schedule time for me/family. Still working to get better at all of these! #HackLearning
It’s seen, IME, as a countdown! Like release date from prison... Scheduling/planning is one thing, but the countdown just rings wrong for me. #hacklearning#HackLearningDaily
A3: A) While screencasted feedback videos for students are uploading to YouTube, I read a bit of my book.
B) While I call home at lunch, I clean up the classroom. ;)
I like to pair things I love with things I don't love so much.
#hacklearning
#HackLearning
A3. My best "hack" is getting up early. It's peaceful and I can think clearly. I also like to put a timer on and plan for something little but enjoyable after the work time. So yesterday, I wrote curriculum for an hour and then took my puppy to our fav park.
A3 I always have a device with me to get tasks completed. Prioritizing is a must. I address all emails before the end of the school day. It’s also important to shut down the tech when I get home and have family time. #HackLearning
Yes!! I recently jumped on the podcast-train & now I'm hooked! While I'm driving, walking the dog, chores around the house. It's a great way to be productive! #HackLearning
I've been thinking about same thing. Would I be more productive if I didn't read every email the minute it comes in? Once in a while a message gets buried because it's too complex for me to reply when I read it. I might be better to wait and read them all at once. #HackLearning
That #MyOneWord2018 ... Be ... which may be why I gave up my quad lists. I’m not sure if I found “extra” time, but I did find myself less stressed. :) #HackLearning
Reading answers from you amazing multi-taskers, do you ever find that you feel unproductive if you are only doing one thing at a time? #guilty
I don't want to go so far to one side that I can't focus on a task when needed! #hacklearning
A3.2) A couple of other thoughts that pull me through sometimes: 1) Pick one big thing per day, and consider it your success criteria. "If I get this done, I can feel good about the day." 2) Do the worst thing first. Eat your spiders in the morning. #HackLearning

A3: I get up early to get a workout in before school - also energizes me. I call it "me time" that way I can devote the rest of the day to work and family.
#HackLearning
Me too. Biggest problem is our district doesn't have just one calendar and I haven't found a way to make them all talk. I get notifications on my phone but having 1 place to look is important too. #hacklearning
A3: It seems we are ALL multi-taskers....but I know this contributes to my own stress. I find I can never turn 'off' and just be. How can we have a better balance?! #HackLearning
A3:in December I discovered Shipt. It’s a grocery delivery service my local grocery store uses. I can’t say enough for how this has added time to my weekend and lessened the stress of weekly grocery shopping. #HackLearning
Look what's officially launching tomorrow: It's #HackLearningDaily, an extension of the weekly live #HackLearning chat.

Keeping those whiteboards around my office serve 2 purposes. 1: I can glance over and see things to do or jot down ideas about them as they arise throughout they day; and 2: so others can know what’s going on if they stop by and I’m not there. #HackLearning#gwinchat
Our elementary folks have this down — I started assigning jobs in my classroom — if they can do it in 4th grade, then they can definitely do it in 9th grade! ;) #HackLearning
A2 I use @msonenote to maximize my time. I can look and respond to student work at my leisure. The same is true for @Flipgrid videos and @Newsela article interactions. #hacklearning
Though I need my own refresher course, my Sign-Off-Saturdays were a great way to change the crazy cadence of my week. #HackLearninghttps://t.co/Zv38iJ0M2N
A3. Everyone gets their 24 hours. It’s important to put first things first. When prioritizing don’t forget to schedule in that “me time”. #HackLearning
It's definitely a digital To Do list - not the best for serious note-taking, but you can put notes IN the to do list. Not great on phone, but I love it on the laptop. Here's a screenshot for part of today - #hacklearning
I mean, I think that it depends. Sometimes I will listen to something while doing a workout. But other times, I just want the chance to be quiet with my own thoughts. Depends on the day. #hacklearning
Join #HackLearning chat April 22 at 8:30-9:00am EDT when Denis Sheeran @MathDenisNJ will be guest moderator leading chat on the "hacky" topic of Mathematics
A3: I started teaching & supporting my daughters in tasks THEY can do for themselves ... emptying D/W, folding & putting away their laundry, making their own lunches. GREAT timesavers & building responsibility/independence, too!
#HackLearning
Stop being everything for everybody. I find that if I’m not teaching, I’m helping with tech, putting away equipment and a million other things. We have to empower others to take the lead as well. It’s tough, but it actually helps others to master their craft. #HackLearning
A3 find time by being efficient. What do you need to do now, soon, and someday. Sometimes you need a break from the urgent tasks, start those “some days, dug into those ‘soon’ tasks” #hacklearning
Yes, BUT... sometimes - no, actually MANY times - when I do two things at once, they both don't go as well as if I only did one really well. :( Depends on the tasks, I guess. #hacklearning
