Thank you for visiting #ksedchat. We welcome all educators to our chat that runs Mondays at 8 p.m. Central. Though many of our educators have their homes in Kansas, all teachers are welcome to pop in and join in on the learning.
A1: I would want that child to be successful in the way that is best for them; excelling that their strengths and weaknesses. Being a kind and caring person who contributes to the betterment of society. #ksedchat
Q1: We asked Kansans almost this exact question as they said happy, fulfilled, civically engaged with skills that allow one to live at least in the middle class. #KSedchat
A1: Students need to know how to be engaged, and productive citizens. They need the soft skills to be successful not only in college but in any given career field. #KSedchat
A1) This is such a good question. I used to ask myself “What does the ideal graduate look like?” Lately, I’ve been asking myself, “What does each student look like at 30?” I think that’s the better question. #ksedchat
Natalie Vanderbeck, K-5 Title Math teacher in Pittsburg. My husband and I are going to be a couples costume to go with our school jungle theme! #ksedchat
A1. Well rounded. Able to problem solve, but also ask for help when they need it! Hands on, innovative and ready to work hard to achieve their dreams! Anything is possible! #ksedchat
A2 for me clear communication is the number one skill to be good at in the 21st century. We need students to be prepared to communicate across a number of mediums. Understand how to get what they need through clear concise communication methods. Verbal, digital written #ksedchat
A2: I think that Ss need the skills to cooperate with others effectively. College and career is not just being book smart, you can easily know the material for when you need to but then not be able to apply it outside of class. #ksedchat
I think it means prepared for all kinds of things - and being willing to take risks, try new things, and not limit yourself. We don’t know specifically what will be needed. #ksedchat
A2: I understand everyone has natural ability, but being coachable and having those "soft skills" (being polite, good work ethic, willing to help) is so important. It will take them so far, and they can learn the rest #ksedchat
Career and future ready =resilience, strong problem solving skills, the ability to collaborate, communication skills, creativity, the list could go on.... #KSedchat
A2: I go back to my one-word to describe the future student...resourceful. If students are determined to figure out problems and use their resources, I believe they will be successful in the future! #ksedchat
A2) None of those work if anlerson doesn’t know and feel their worth. First, we remind them we love them and value them. Sxbool@has to be safe for them. Then we can work on the rest. #ksedchat
A2: Seek the information that they need to succeed.
Students are producers and advocates for themselves.
They are able to collaborate with peers around them and globally. #ksedchat
A2 “Future-ready” means flexible, capable of learning and applying new skills quickly, and adept at synthesizing knowledge from multiple disciplines to address complex problems.
#ksedchat
A2. Career or future ready means having a growth mindset-willing to continue to learn and grow no matter what age. To be resilient despite life’s ups and downs and the ability to seek out resources when needed for themselves or others. #ksedchat
Hi, jumping in from MO, HS math. I have to say that I think "reaching" for info is so imp. Ss hide what they don't know and continue that practice as college Ss and we wonder why so few are successful. #ksedchat
#ksedchat I define critical skills as soft skills. Those soft skills of empathy, kindness, caring about others and having the skill of being able to converse with others and behold relationships as well as being able to work through differences.
A2. Career or future ready means having a growth mindset-willing to continue to learn and grow no matter what age. To be resilient despite life’s ups and downs and the ability to seek out resources when needed for themselves or others. #ksedchat
I suspect we encourage Ss not to reach for help when we work so hard to make sure everyone understands and hold up progress for entire classes to divert time t those who hid. #ksedchat
#ksedchat Without resilience being a component of our educational process, many Ss will lack the fortitude or ability to overcome the obstacles that so many of them will face in their journey. #resiliencechat
A2. Career or future ready means having a growth mindset-willing to continue to learn and grow no matter what age. To be resilient despite life’s ups and downs and the ability to seek out resources when needed for themselves or others. #ksedchat
A2) Tomorrow’s problems will be part of industries that don’t even exist yet. Today’s students should be so flexible not only will they able to think and communicate about the solutions, they’ll be the ones inventing those industries and their problems. #ksedchat
A3: We teach our Ss teamwork, problem-solving, conflict resolution, and communication skills. Just to name a few that they will use in future careers. #ksedchat
a3 I've been structuring grades to make it a lot less work for the student if they decide to "get it right the first time," but patience and mercy for students who aren't there yet. #ksedchat
Q3 we need to be explicit about the indirect content. Crossing our fingers and hoping they figure it out isn't enough. Direct character ed. Tie into future relevance. Make the connections. #Ksedchat
A3: We have so many... Showing students how we handle situations and how we act are probably biggest for me. If I can't be what I'm promoting them to be, I destroy any credibility I had with them #ksedchat
A3 Teachers are always learning something new and applying it as quickly as possible to generate a positive result. That’s what so many employers want! Capable, confident, and creative professionals. Teachers can be transparent about their own lifelong learning. #ksedchat
A3 An educator’s role in helping Ss become career ready is providing a safe place to practice real life experiences and intentional learning opportunities. It’s also showing Ss we are human and role model some of these skills, especially co-regulation. #ksedchat
A3) Continue to model the professionalism that will be expected by our Ss in the workplace and to communicate effectively with those outside of our comfort zones who are different from ourselves in a variety of ways. A sense of respect for all we encounter daily. #ksedchat
Yes! I require my students to sacrifice some social time, walk into one of my classes in progress (or join me for lunch) in order to make up for not asking Qs as they encountered them on homework or during lessons. Self-advocacy & SEL here. #ksedchat
A3: facilitating situations where students can problem solve, think critically, work with others, and what I think is most important, fail with someone who can help and encourage them to try again! #KSedchat
A3 Exposure so Ss can find their passion, support them to problem solve, encorage them to dream believe and achieve, help them to share their voice, develop a love of learning #ksedchat
I always told my students the same thing! Discovery is so important for students because they will be working in brand new fields that do not yet exist! #ksedchat
A3 Exposure so Ss can find their passion, support them to problem solve, encorage them to dream believe and achieve, help them to share their voice, develop a love of learning #ksedchat
a3. CRUCIAL, but challenging due to ever-increasing demands and expectations for teachers. Ensure you can connect your content/instruction but bringing in examples of how it can be applicable in the real world. Also, expose them to new things! #ksedchat
A3 Teaching them that failure is ok, to help them find their passion, to help them grow as a whole, to think creatively and persevere through hardship #ksedchat
Great comment @eric_falls that we should give Ss the opportunity to "practice real life skills while acquiring knowledge." We need to show them some of the skills of our craft as well :) #ksedchat
A3) Practice what you want them to value. Allow growth opportunities. Champion mistakes as tools for improvement. Ask questions that don’t have answers yet. Teach them how to wonder about something. #ksedchat

A4 each day I want my students to talk and Listen to each other. Provide their opinion about something with reason. I want them to seek answers on their own and from each other rather than just me. And I want them to communicate what they've learned verbally or written #ksedchat
My inquiry teams (algebra & geometry) have assigned roles as in little depts & I am CAO. They are expected to be productive and hold ea other accountable for SEL. I'm seeing Ss with documented SE challenges grow by leaps & bounds. Why didn't I know about this before? #ksedchat
A4: in world geography I consistently tie what we are learning about to current events that are taking place and how they are effecting us here in Kansas. Getting students to be global thinkers is a skill that will help them be #futureready#KSedchat
A4: Inside class, it's tough. But, when cadets come to school, they are raw on these skills. We adopt Ss as their "parents," and we get those chances to teach/reinforce these skills with them. Even conferences have been like that thruout my time here #ksedchat
It’s certainly a significant disconnect. In the professional world, your time is not managed (typically) and “assignments” rarely come with a rubric. #ksedchat
A4) Sharing my musical journey with my Ss: the joy, the struggle & the sense of achievement that arises through performance. We should all be professionally involved in our craft and share that with our Ss. Let them know that we fail & we succeed. Again, modeling. #ksedchat
A4 we have a list of problem solving strategies that we use in all content areas. We also refer to them when he have little behavior hiccups. It took a while for students to use it on their own, but now they’re quick to pull it out when a problem occurs. #KSedchat
Right. If I just tell them what I think without an explanation, figure the odds anyone is going to listen to me. If Ss want a voice, then need to figure out how to explain. #ksedchat
In math, there does need to be a certain limit for parameters we call curriculum & learning objectives, but Ss can be very creative & think far beyond with low-floor, high-ceiling Qs. #ksedchat
A3) Yes, and ask them to solve problems they don't already know how to solve yet. Why do we think it is an unfair thing to ask Ss to solve an unfamiliar problem? Life does that to us all the time! We need to model that behavior. #ksedchat
A4 I try to let my kids know they are valuable so we have mutual respect. I truly care for them - and they reciprocate. I ask for forgiveness; I work through my mistakes with them. Like them, I am a work in progress. #ksedchat
A4 Teach Ss the importance of self regulation-finding what already works for them in school & outside school, discussing it with peers to inquire about more ideas, giving them a safe space to practice. #ksedchat
A4: I think that even though it isn't the skills that we have mentioned this evening specifically, but admitting to the students when you mess up and thinking aloud as you think on your feet. #ksedchat
We did a Mystery Science lesson today and I forgot to print off the worksheet, I told my students that I messed up and forgot. I thought aloud as I problem solved on my feet though, thankfully it was easily doable on the board. #ksedchat
Q5: Resource Roundup time! What have you found that has worked well for your classroom and/or school. What kinds of resources do you wish you had? #ksedchat

I decided to write a song about Egypt. Students loved it and I even heard them singing it during the test to help with questions!!! We started a new unit today and they all asked if we were going to learn a new song, so here I am songwriting tonight! #ksedchat
Q5: Resource Roundup time! What have you found that has worked well for your classroom and/or school. What kinds of resources do you wish you had? #ksedchat
Sweet! Yes, I agree that lecturing Ss is hugely ineffective in the high-notification society we have. My data is saying that they are retaining significantly more thru inquiry. #ksedchat

A5 definitely @MysterySci and @codeorg love using these science resources to help my Ss explore the world around them. Any other science tools are greatly appreciated! #KSedchat#DerbyProud

A2: Our Ss should have the best possible education to prepare them for success, regardless of the path they choose - and we should go out of our way to present them with opportunities to explore virtually every path. #ksedchat
Oh yes!!! That is why I have family meetings before schl begins to explain the brain sci so Ss aren't thinking I make them think so hard they get little headaches...for no reason. #ksedchat
A5: @breakoutEDU is such a great tool that allows for critical thinking, problem solving, collaboration, creativity, the whole 9 yards. We also have created school wide posters for the zones of regulations. #ksedchat
A3. Educators have a huge role in preparing students to to be career ready. I believe that educators who approach the classroom as a family setting or at least embracing the concept of community, nurture skills in Ssthat will either help or hinder career readiness. #ksedchat
Has it been an hour already? WOW and THANK YOU for all your contributions--fantastic discussion. I will be sharing out our #ksedchat answers to Q1 in the morning, so keep your eyes peeled for that!
