A1 - my school is a re-engagement school so for us it looks like helping my #alted Ss who had disengaged from school to get back into the rhythm of our #PBL approach. Teacher/Advisory/Student relationships where your past doesn’t matter. #UrbanEdchat
A1: engagement involves students who are actively adding to classroom conversations and experience. It looks different in different settings #UrbanEdChat
A1. Ss actively participating in their learning. They are demonstrating/illustrating in some way what is being taught. They are in no way passive. It is a partnership between the the teacher & the Ss. #UrbanEdChat
A2: studentswho are engaged are actively learning. They feel valuable and that what they are learning has importance. It’s also important for students that struggle #UrbanEdChat
A2 - engaged classrooms are so much more fun as a T. It reduces need for discipline. And if all is going well, Ss are actively asking/answering questions about subjects they are interested in #UrbanEdchat
A2. It focuses all of their cognitive abilities on learning which maximizes their time on task and is more efficient. The benefits are less off task behaviors which decreases discipline problems. #UrbanEdChat
A3. It is being aware of the richness of the different cultures in your classroom. It integrates the contributions of different cultures in the lesson. It also purposely celebrates different cultures as a part of the class routine. #UrbanEdChat
A4 - S interest is A MUST for an engaged classroom. When Ss are interested in what they are learning AND the learning is S-centered, it completely changes their attitudes, their approach and focus. #urbanedchat
A5 - engaged classes, when done right, almost eliminate discipline challenges. Ss are always going to be Ss, but engaged Ss are easily put back on track #UrbanEdchat
A4. It is important because it is a differentiated instruction strategy which is supposed to meet the needs of all Ss. Cultural resp. Sparks interest because it brings familiarity & shows respect for a Ss culture. #UrbanEdChat
A6: It’s the little things, giving the student one on one attention that involves conversations about the student are impactful. Just letting the student know you care and not minimalizing them #UrbanEdChat
A5. It reduces or eliminates off task behaviors which positively impacts discipline. There is no time or opportunity to act up because the Ss are totally engaged in the lesson. #UrbanEdChat
A6 - one of the strengths of my #alted#PBL school is the Advisory model. It’s a 18-20:1 S/T ratio. It allows us to really get to know Ss. When you know some of their story, you can show compassion when they have a moment #UrbanEdchat
A6. By pronouncing their names correctly, Learning & implementing some words/customs from their Ss culture. Integrating aspects of some of their Ss cultures in the lesson plan. Actually being interested & ask Ss questions about their cultures. #UrbanEdChat
