Q0: Introduce yourself and share a proud or embarrassing moment you've had in your life while participating in sports.
-
Joseph Williams
Executive Dir of Technology
Proud to coach students.
-
A0 Jeremiah, math nerd, and any moment I am engaged in sports is pretty embarrassing for everyone around
-
A0: In high school league Cross Country finals, I barfed up Spam on the Perris course. Was on track to lettering until then.
-
-
Deatra Lee, Tech TOSA , proud to have played for UCR Women's Basketball team
-
A0:
Jed Butler
Tech TOSA / Math Geek
embarrassing: lost my shorts in a basketball game
-
Wow, you ate Spam and thought it'd be idea to run...nice (;
-
edcampLake Elsinore, let's gohttps://www.eventbrite.com/e/edcamp-dream-extreme-tickets-26967869624
-
A0: Mark Synnott, Tech coach. Proudest moment in sports was when I hit the game winning homerun...in tee ball.
-
-
A0: Candace Reines, Asst Supt . Joined a coed softball team and the boys were impressed how far I could throw a ball
-
Other side of A0 coin:
Awesome - open gym w teammate from college club team (volleyball)
-
I guess the level of embarrassment here might lie in whether you were supposed to
-
-
A0: 8th grade history teacher. I have plenty of embarrassing band camp stories
-
Q1:Could the benefits of high-school sports:exercise, sportsmanship, perseverance, school spirit, be replaced by other activities?
-
Ahh in the sport where the men are men, the ball is stationary, and everyone plays for fun
-
A0: Judy Lane English T and Allstar softball catcher
-
-
. Not my proudest moment. Live and learn.
-
Nice! At what distance were they most impressed?
-
-
A0 - Shane, Asst. Dir of Tech for . Got jumped over by a kid who was dunking on me.
-
Nice, volleyball is so fun
-
A1: Sports are not the only way students can learn teamwork, sportsmanship, belonging, and perseverance.
-
-
Do they start, "One time at band camp..."
-
I figured you'd be all over that (:
-
Nothing impressive. Apparently no other girl catcher could get the ball back to the pitcher w/o a bounce or a roll.
-
. Assistant Directors of Tech can't jump.
-
a1 Sports are an important part of culture, they feed Ss, give pride and IDK if other physical activities fill that void
-
A1:Robotics, Academic Decathlon, Debate. But sports are fundamental to human existence.Who didn't see who was fastest when little?
-
A1: Robotics club can satisfy most of these.
-
A1: Sports are not the only way to teach perseverance and teamwork but keeps some in school and more
-
A1: Sports are important but there are more options too. , , service clubs, etc.
-
A1: I don't think it can be replaced but there are plenty of activities that can teach the same things
-
Nice, so I am wondering if you were ever tempted to throw it at them? (;
-
A1:
lots of stuff there,
the pieces can be replicated but probably not as a whole.
There's clubs, there's healthy activities...
-
A1: We could encourage those attributes in a variety of activities, not just sports. We miss kids by focusing too tightly.
-
A1: I love sports but they can marginalize the non-athletic.
-
What do you think and students? Join us on https://t.co/6VqikMP30F
-
-
A1: Sports are important but there are more options too. , , service clubs, etc.
-
A1b: Its wrong to think the emphasis on HS sports is the only model.Plenty of examples in the European model of club sports.
-
this also only highlights the positives.
Sports has costs. $, time, balancing with academics,
-
This is key. We need to prevent this from continuing. All school connected activities are important.
-
A1: there are other ways that are more inclusive that can be used along with sports
-
A1b: My school let the posting of team photos get out of control in the admin bldg. Ended up wallpapering the interior. Fixed now.
-
Yeah, I'd agree, it's not the only way Ss learn these traits, but it does keep a lot of Ss in/caring 4 school
-
-
A1b: need to celebrate all achievement, sports are just the easiest to celebrate and understand.
-
A1b: On the other hand, when I was a kid, sports got me through tough times. The LA County Parks and Rec did great work.
-
Hi everyone- Sonal - Instructional coach, checking in - sorry I'm late!
-
A1b:
balance.
Celebrate various groups for achievements & identity. Celebrate the diversity of the students and their interests.
-
A1b: My school is not guilty. They push club and after school activities pretty hard. But, Panther football is 4-0!
-
Awesome to have you Sonal!
Thanks for joining.
talking sports in school.
-
A1b: athletics is not overemphasized, there are many opportunities for students to grow and persevere and all are promoted
-
Q2: Coaches, have you ever found yourself spending an inordinate amount of time on your sport vs. classroom lesson planning? How?
-
a1b Almost every school is guilty of this here in the CV, it's one of few things Ss/stakeholders cheer about esp football
-
are you saying it isn't overemphasized for you locally or in general?
-
Never late, you arrive just on time
-
A1b: I had Ss ask me if they were unimportant because they weren't in sports since rallies last year didn't honor academics
-
A1b: I'm afraid to say I think all our schools are guilty of this.
-
a2 I do know coaches that'll watch 20 hrs of video for prep for game, 0 hrs watching instr practice videos
-
A2: not a coach but appreciate the work they do and that they are approachable and want to see Ss succeed in class
-
A2: not a coach but when I was in band I often ditched classes to chill in the band room and practice
-
A2: I'm guilty of this. Pay is 90/10 teaching/coaching but at one time I had that reversed completely. I mentor balance now.
-
locally, PMS does a great job promoting all activities and clubs.
-
A2: Teachers should not be spending an inordinate amount of time on anything at the expense of classroom instruction.
-
Had similar experience w/Ss from Kazakhstan , but she liked social aspects of sports nights
-
A2:
when I coached volleyball, yes.
Sports doesn't do well with part time commitment. Neither does teaching. It's tough.
-
-
Q2b: Whether sports or clubs, how do you find the appropriate balance between teaching, extracurricular, & domestic duties? .
-
A2 cont: I would have been an awesome full time coach or full time teacher, but I honestly never found the balance for both.
-
What does that balance look like for you? What changed your thoughts on time?
-
A2: I coach men's softball but that takes no time at all. As far as real coaches, I've seen sports being the ONLY thing.
-
LOL only group more dedicated than athletes are at least in my experience
-
A2b: When I pulled double duty as teachers half day and literacy coach half day, it was tough to find balance.
-
A2b: Listen to your spouse. Think of your kids. But also try to bring them to the games and make it a family passion.
-
It's odd, I was thinking about this last year, then dropped a great post and now I'm doing it
-
A2b: for my club, I let my Ss decide what's the discussion for the week and I help guide it. It allows me to balance more
-
A2b: I haven't even found the balance with teaching and "domestic duties" let alone anything extra but I am an empty nester now
-
-
a2b easiest Q ever, my wife tells me where to spend my time &neverhavetothinkagain
-
A2: as a coach I balanced my time the way I expected my student-athletes to -academics first, always
-
-
Q3. Athletics can be transformative. How have you observed athletics contributing to a positive school culture? Please describe.
-
I wonder if your kids understood the time being a T demands...would be interesting to ask
-
A3: I have seen sports contributing positively to school culture. Each time, it was because of the culture the coach created.
-
AQ2b - still trying to work this out, but getting better! Thanks for the tips y'all!
-
a3 Some Ss only care about grades when their sport is playing, in gen it fosters a sense of pride and common rally point
-
A2b: My time as a rabbit coach for helps me achieve personal balance. I also try to instill school/club balance for Ss
-
-
A3: I watched a kid that was tough as nails reduced to a puddle of tears when winning league at cross cross country. Amazing.
-
Yeah, effective coaches literally build a TEAM, nothing fosters more than belonging to a tribe
-
A3: Just went to my 1st homecoming rally and football game. The students were united in support for their team. Great to see.
-
I like that, "narrow down what you love." Nice way to say it
-
. That is why they are 4-0. :)
-
A3: the coaches always push our athletes to be great scholars and role models for the school
-
Yes, a common entity to root for, that represents Ss on "field"
-
A3: I've seen Ss in band, cheer and Ag achieve in school only because of their sport/club. Whatever it takes!
-
A3:
Athletics/Extra-curr often attract Ss to school. Academics should strive for this too.
Either way, relationships are core.
-
Q3b: right around the corner
-
A3: Why not all extracurricular activities? Can’t band, theatre, debate be transformative & serve as a rallying point for culture
-
Don't Ss think we just sleep at school. In cots. And eat leftovers that Ss left on the ground.
-
A3: I have had some pretty serious academic athletes/all sports in my classes, who have been role models to other students love it
-
. Agreed, but they often feel in the shadow of sports.
-
A3b: But I have also seen arrogance and entitlement that no coach should encourage. Should not be celebrated.
-
Q3b. Have you ever observed athletics contributing to a negative school culture? Please describe.
-
Yes, they can, I just think sports tends to be more popular rally point
-
Yeah, it's always funny when they see you "outside" of school. Also tells you a lot about your impact
-
a3 sports can help build a strong team culture which can then transfer into the classroom
-
but why? Because it is easier? Why is there no pep rally for drama or band?
-
A2: elementary doesn't have sports teams at site so that does take that off our plates as teachers
-
Biggest violation I think Joseph nailed
-
I've seen the desire to get a star athlete take down principlals, ADs, and head coaches, sometimes wrongfully, but it is a stain.
-
A3: athletic teams represent the school and community, Ss feel a sense of pride in that
-
Yes
Yes they can.
And should be.
extra curr advisors need to take that to heart, build culture w Ss in any context.
-
A3b:I've seen desire to get a star athlete take down principlals, ADs, and head coaches, sometimes wrongfully, but it is a stain.
-
A3b: My high school basically kicked marching band, choir, and theatre to the curb to put more focus on football
-
have had this too--that's when we need that coach https://t.co/I8f7uJ8x1l
-
-
a3 Some Ss only care about grades when their sport is playing, in gen it fosters a sense of pride and common rally point
-
A3b:
Rivalries with opponents can get out of hand. Sportsmanship and humanity need presence. And, it's a GAME.
-
Sorry about the fast pace, we are almost ready to wrap up.
-
Any final thoughts on the positive or negative role sports plays in high schools?
-
A3b the exclusionary nature of athletics can be ruinous for kids.
-
FT on : On the Menifee bowl, we should not be encouraging division. We need . Kids should be tweeting
-
FT: BALANCE and MODERATION in all things.
