Azure from Derby, KS. My favorite moment after returning from break was exploring perimeter with a piece of bread. We've also started implenting Impero in our classrooms and it is fun to broadcast my screen directly to their chromebooks. #3rdchat

We have had some really great moments once we have come back from winter break... I think my favorite is we chose our #OneWord 's for the year.. and we have been holding each other accountable ever since! #3rdchat
  • MrsHarrisREL Jan 16 @ 9:03 PM EST
Cortney Harris- 3rd grade Math TN- my favorite moment was today! I gave Ss their ticket to GLOW day tomorrow & one asked me “Why do you do this for us?” #3rdchat I was able to answer wholeheartedly and tell them because I love them and want them to enjoy learning!
  • finley_miss Jan 16 @ 9:04 PM EST
Drea Finley from Basehor, KS. We were reading a book about the Wright Brothers and the steps they took in inventing the airplane. I asked my group "What do you think they added to the glider to make an airplane?" 3rd grader...straight face...."Zombies". #bellylaugh #3rdchat

Q1: What would you do if your principal came to you concerned about your coworkers classroom management and was hoping for you to be a mentor? How would you help them be successful. Give some strategies that you might use to help them. #3rdchat
  • 8to3withMrsV Jan 16 @ 9:06 PM EST
A1: I wld 1st come to them & have a conversation. I would ask them how things are going,& see if they offer details. Then, I might offer up suggestions that I have seen from my PLN on twitter or Insta & see what they think.I do think the principal should initiate the conv.#3rdchat
  • azurehenwood Jan 16 @ 9:06 PM EST
A1: First of all, shouldn't the administrator discuss this with the teacher in question? However, as a support, I would kindly share some of the things that work well in my classroom in a collaborative fashion. #3rdchat
  • nimesys Jan 16 @ 9:06 PM EST
Hey all! Sarah, 3rd LA teacher from OH. Best thing since break has been seeing joy on kids faces as they share that they have finished a book! #3rdchat
  • SarahJHuber Jan 16 @ 9:08 PM EST
Sarah from SE MO joining! My favorite moment was our first semester awards assembly last week. EVERY student in my class earned at least one award, which is unheard of! 9 years in and I have never had that happen before! #3rdchat
  • ErinMastin Jan 16 @ 9:08 PM EST

Q2: What would you do if you were asked to change one thing about your building.. to make ti a better place for staff and students. What would you change and how would you change it? #3rdchat
  • finley_miss Jan 16 @ 9:09 PM EST
A1: We just chatted about this on #BeTheOne and it was agreed that listening was a top priority. Asking them what they are concerned about or need would probably be the first step. #3rdchat
  • nimesys Jan 16 @ 9:09 PM EST
A1: what I did was try to talk about her class and how she felt things we're going. Shared things that were working in my room with those same kids. #3rdchat
  • 8to3withMrsV Jan 16 @ 9:10 PM EST
A2: I think that I would make one STUDENT centered location for them to come and hang out...read... work in groups. Maybe somewhere like our media center? Lots of couches, chairs, lamps... plants, warm colored walls- super inviting and calming. #3rdchat
  • ErinMastin Jan 16 @ 9:10 PM EST
A1: I would try to approach it from the “collaborating” angle. Being the example is some times the best approach when it comes to peers. That way feelings don’t get hurt. #3rdchat
  • nimesys Jan 16 @ 9:11 PM EST
A2 self contained classes in all elementary. The stress of switching is too much on many kids and me #3rdchat
  • chorn68 Jan 16 @ 9:11 PM EST
Carrie Horn. Hutchinson, KS. My favorite moment since returning from break was helping my students write their dream after ready Martin's Big Words. #3rdchat
  • SarahJHuber Jan 16 @ 9:12 PM EST
I would offer strategies that align with #PBIS. Build a relationship, show respect, set expectations, practice them, and hold Ss accountable. Offer praise but don't be afraid to give consequences. Ss need to know you want what's best for them. #3rdchat
  • finley_miss Jan 16 @ 9:12 PM EST
A2: Luckily this is a reality for my building! We are going through @KSDEredesign. Today my group worked on developing a plan to make individual student portfolios and standards based grade cards! But there are other things in the works from the other teams! #3rdchat
  • 8to3withMrsV Jan 16 @ 9:14 PM EST
Q3: What would you do if your superintendent asked to come visit your classroom and wanted to see your most engaging lesson. What would you do, what would it look like? #3rdchat
  • ErinMastin Jan 16 @ 9:14 PM EST
Maybe starting a school wide peer observation time. Our principal will come and sub for us so that we can go watch our co-workers. We are often so close to each other yet so far away. Maybe seeing others and how they manage students will help that teacher. #3rdchat
  • azurehenwood Jan 16 @ 9:15 PM EST
A3: They would see what we do everyday. Integrate technology, student collaboration with teacher instruction. I would want to showcase what my students can do on @Seesaw, @DoInkTweets, and so much more! #3rdchat
  • 8to3withMrsV Jan 16 @ 9:15 PM EST
A3: I would just invite him in anytime. I want him to see our everyday life.. our struggles and our successes. IF there was a point in our day that I LOVE the most and am most proud of is our Morning Meeting time... we would love to have him join in with us! #3rdchat
  • finley_miss Jan 16 @ 9:16 PM EST
A3: First instinct? Hide. LOL. Probably a math investigation. We just did one on area, using sticky notes! #3rdchat
    • finley_miss Jan 10 @ 9:58 PM EST
Kiddos working hard using different sized sticky notes to find the area of objects leading us to realize the importance of standard units!
  • ErinMastin Jan 16 @ 9:17 PM EST
A3: I love stations! I think kids do best when they have activities and tasks to complete. They can get their hands on things and connect with their peers. I usually do stations to build background knowledge. Kids tend to be really engaged. #3rdchat
  • nimesys Jan 16 @ 9:17 PM EST
A3: read aloud... my students love a good read aloud. Our reading community is really strong this year #3rdchat
  • SarahJHuber Jan 16 @ 9:18 PM EST
A3: I've had sups in my room on a few occasions! Once I even won a contest where they had to teach my class for an hour! I would plan a lesson that was super engaging for students, involving hands-on learning, cooperative learning, technology. So many choices! #3rdchat
  • ErinMastin Jan 16 @ 9:18 PM EST
Cool! Is this an activity you made up or from a program? #3rdchat

  • 8to3withMrsV Jan 16 @ 9:19 PM EST
Q4: What would you do if you were given the opportunity to completely revamp your classroom? What would your new space look like? How would it benefit student learning? #3rdchat
  • chorn68 Jan 16 @ 9:19 PM EST
A1. An incognito mentor? I would ask questions about how things are going and wait for an opening and lead in with something like... "if something like this happened in my class I might..." #3rdchat
  • 8to3withMrsV Jan 16 @ 9:20 PM EST
A4: OH MAN! Dream come true (can HGTV redo classrooms.. PLEASE??!!??). I would paint my walls, I would knock out the shelving and build shelves that are better use to our space. Lots of couches, chairs...no fluorescent lights, lots of lamps. #3rdchat
  • azurehenwood Jan 16 @ 9:20 PM EST
A4: I would want a recording area with a permanent green screen for creating videos of student projects. I would have additional options for flexible seating and ipad technology as well as chromebooks. #3rdchat
  • finley_miss Jan 16 @ 9:20 PM EST
Made it up. I was looking for a way to make this concept concrete and I have a fondness for sticky notes, so I had an excess. #3rdchat
    In reply to @ErinMastin
  • ErinMastin Jan 16 @ 9:21 PM EST
Cool! I love it! We just happen to be studying area too. I’m totally stealing this idea. :-) Thanks! #3rdchat

Couches, bean bags and more pillows! An interactive board and a projector from the ceiling with working cables. Whatever makes our space comfortable to read and share about books #3rdchat
  • lesahaney Jan 16 @ 9:21 PM EST
Sounds like a great place to learn! #3rdchat

  • lesahaney Jan 16 @ 9:23 PM EST
Clever way to kick off your measurement unit. Knowing the importance of communicating a standard unit is so important and this really drive that home. #3rdchat

  • finley_miss Jan 16 @ 9:24 PM EST
A4: A variety of spaces for students to work (floor tables, partner tables, group tables, seating choices), storage for materials that was student friendly, space for all the books in my classroom library #ithinkihaveabookprob #3rdchat
  • 8to3withMrsV Jan 16 @ 9:25 PM EST
Q5: What would you do to support a coworker who was struggling with a tough kiddo in their classroom? What resources and tools might you give them for the student. #3rdchat
  • SarahJHuber Jan 16 @ 9:25 PM EST
A4: I don't know! I see so many cool things on Pinterest and Instagram from the teachers I follow. I would definitely want a bigger library! With even more comfy furniture. And smaller desks. Ours are way too big and take up so much wasted space. #3rdchat
  • finley_miss Jan 16 @ 9:25 PM EST
Careful if you use the teenie tiny ones that are used for studying. The group that had those only got to measure the desk because it took so long! #3rdchat
    In reply to @ErinMastin
  • azurehenwood Jan 16 @ 9:26 PM EST
A5: They need to feel supported. Secondly, I would suggest finding the triggers for the student. What is the why behind the behavior? Offer some self-regulation ideas for the student. #3rdchat
  • 8to3withMrsV Jan 16 @ 9:26 PM EST
A5: First, I would offer support. I could be a "safe space" for the student. Or a place to send the kiddo when the teacher just needs a minute to catch their breath. Then, through conversations brainstorm things that they would comfortable implementing. #3rdchat
  • lesahaney Jan 16 @ 9:27 PM EST

A2. Our building is pretty great already but if I were to change one thing, I would give the paras the same professional development about ACE's and trauma as certified staff. #3rdchat
    • 8to3withMrsV Jan 16 @ 9:09 PM EST
Q2: What would you do if you were asked to change one thing about your building.. to make ti a better place for staff and students. What would you change and how would you change it? #3rdchat
  • finley_miss Jan 16 @ 9:29 PM EST
A5: First, I would make sure the teacher was in a good place. Then, I would brainstorm with them what might be the root cause of the behavior. After that, we can work on helping the kiddo through the issue and repairing the relationship. #3rdchat
  • SarahJHuber Jan 16 @ 9:29 PM EST
A5: I would give support by listening. Sometimes all teachers need is someone to talk to about it. Let them know they aren't alone. Suggest a safe spot for the student and offer your own room as a break place. #3rdchat
  • 8to3withMrsV Jan 16 @ 9:30 PM EST
Q6: What would you do if you were given the task of upping family and community involvement in your building? What things might you try? #3rdchat
  • azurehenwood Jan 16 @ 9:31 PM EST
A6: Engage with parents to determine what kind of activities interest them. Find community partners to have the students do hands-on civic engagement. #3rdchat
  • 8to3withMrsV Jan 16 @ 9:31 PM EST
A6: I would love to do this! Having family nights for the school, and then individual grade levels to help build relationships on a personal level. Putting artwork in local community places (we have some amazing schools in our district doing this!) #3rdchat
  • nimesys Jan 16 @ 9:33 PM EST
A6: #KidsDeserveIt has some great community involvement suggestions : cookouts, summer reading, teacher time at community libraries, etc. #3rdchat
  • SarahJHuber Jan 16 @ 9:34 PM EST
A6: My previous school had so many fun family nights! We did those with all students, just boys, just girls, even single grade levels. There were scavenger hunts, karaoke, tech, game nights, even dance offs! Makes me miss that school so much! #3rdchat
  • lesahaney Jan 16 @ 9:34 PM EST
A6: I would love to collaborate to connect community resources with standards. Help build a "database" of community speakers who could come talk about topics. Connect classrooms with resources for service learning, PBL partners, etc... #3rdchat
  • chorn68 Jan 16 @ 9:34 PM EST
A3. Bring it on! Admin is always welcome in my room! I am most proud of my kids when they show what they know, like a presentation. #3rdchat
    • 8to3withMrsV Jan 16 @ 9:14 PM EST
Q3: What would you do if your superintendent asked to come visit your classroom and wanted to see your most engaging lesson. What would you do, what would it look like? #3rdchat
  • finley_miss Jan 16 @ 9:36 PM EST
A6: I would love to see some family nights with math and tech. We have also thrown around the idea of hosting an "after school activity" fair where 4H, Girl and Boy Scouts, teams can display and invite students #3rdchat
  • lesahaney Jan 16 @ 9:37 PM EST

A4. I don't know about my whole room, but the first change I would make is the lighting! Flourescent lighting is too harsh! #3rdchat
  • 8to3withMrsV Jan 16 @ 9:38 PM EST
Q7: What would you do if you were told to dream big, and revamp your current curriculum. What things would you change, and what things would you include? #3rdchat
  • azurehenwood Jan 16 @ 9:39 PM EST
A7: A math curriculum that truly meets the standards and hits them hard. A all inclusive ELA curriculum that covers everything so that we don't have to supplement with other things to fill the gaps of writing, grammar, etc. I would love to see more Project Based Learning #3rdchat
  • 8to3withMrsV Jan 16 @ 9:39 PM EST
A7: I would completely do personalized learning for each student. Lots of PBL and #geniushour projects. Lots of teaching through small group, not whole group. It would be AMAZING! #3rdchat
  • chorn68 Jan 16 @ 9:39 PM EST
A5. This is literally what I was going to say! Great Minds! #3rdChat

    In reply to @8to3withMrsV
  • SarahJHuber Jan 16 @ 9:44 PM EST
A7: I would love to have PBL planned out for us, more STEM, coding, and passion projects or genius hour. A curriculum that has those things included would be great. #3rdchat
  • 8to3withMrsV Jan 16 @ 9:45 PM EST
Q8: What would you do if you were given the task of boosting staff morale? What things might you want to try or put into place? #3rdchat
  • azurehenwood Jan 16 @ 9:46 PM EST
A8: Opportunities for the staff to truly connect at events outside of school where they can not think about curriculum or test scores and just support each other. Also, the power of positive notes goes a long way! #3rdchat
  • 8to3withMrsV Jan 16 @ 9:46 PM EST
A8: I LOVE doing things to make people happy. I wish I could find time to do a kindness cart monthly, write little notes... make snacks. This is my love language! <3 #3rdchat
  • finley_miss Jan 16 @ 9:49 PM EST
A8: In a previous district we had "Friday PD" at a local bar and grill after school. It wasn't a big deal, if you showed you did, but it was a chance to let it all go before the weekend started. Also the hot chocolate bar we had at school today did a pretty good job #3rdchat
  • chorn68 Jan 16 @ 9:49 PM EST
A7. I would teach everything in small groups allowing for more differentiation. #3rdChat
  • SarahJHuber Jan 16 @ 9:51 PM EST
A8: This is something we've dealt with time and time before. Rewards for a job done well- sodas, chocolate, jeans days! Positive notes and messages are always a big help. Time to be with one another and enjoy each other's company outside of school is important too. #3rdchat
  • finley_miss Jan 16 @ 9:51 PM EST
For the hot chocolate bar? The coffee thingies that heat water, hot cocoa packets, marshmallows, whipped cream, and cookies. Someone covered your class for a couple minutes while you went to the lounge and made your treat! #3rdchat

A9: I want to do more project based learning. I need to do more research on this and learn about the process. #3rdchat
  • 8to3withMrsV Jan 16 @ 9:53 PM EST
A9: I want to plan more things for staff morale. I feel like the winter months can be hard on a teacher, especially with testing season coming around..I want them to always feel awesome. @JesseEdiger ...hold me accountable! #3rdchat

  • finley_miss Jan 16 @ 9:54 PM EST
A9: I would choose the physical change of the classroom because it is probably the one thing that I can't really change right now without a big $$$ donation from somewhere #3rdchat
  • chorn68 Jan 16 @ 9:56 PM EST
A9. I would choose connection and staff morale. I am feeling like I'm on my island right about now and I know human connection is the answer. #3rdchat
