Hey #5thchat and TeachSC, If you have any energy left, please jump on over to #Peekachat! It's a 30-minute, monthly chat about teaching social-emotional skills in the elementary classroom!
Q1: Every school day, teachers have countless opportunities to observe student interactions, capture the attention of the class, and turn a potential problem into a teachable moment. What are some ways you incorporate SEL into everyday classroom activities? #SEL#Peekachat
A1: Holding morning meetings with your class is a great time to get a feel for the room. Maybe you notice a lot of students are feeling down. Morning meetings provide a great opportunity to learn why and to introduce a new strategy to Ss to cope with these feelings #Peekachat
A1: At the most basic level, it starts with how we speak to our students! Do we show empathy and compassion, or do we show aggression/hostility? #PeekaChat
A1: Greeting Ss at the door each morning creates a welcoming enviro for Ss and can help them feel appreciated and ready to learn. Change it up a bit and assign a student greeter to teach responsibility and encourage positive interactions and empathy b/w Ss! #Peekachat@Peekapak

Q2: Picture books and novels offer teachers great opportunities to teach "What not to do" because of characters making poor choices or mistakes. Are there any other areas in the curriculum where you've been able to incorporate SEL into a lesson? #SEL#Peekachat
A1 - Today was a great opportunity to focus on #Kindness as it was #WorldKindnessDay! We watched @LifeVestInside's "One Day" video and explained each kind act & why it happened, then researched quotes & made them fancy on @Canva! #Peekachat
A1 All Ss check in with Zones each morning, we incorporate how characters are feeling in books the we read, talk about how our actions make others feel &work to recognize when our body needs a break from learning, and find tools to help us get ready to learn again! #PeekaChat
A1: We do morning meetings where I do greetings as a group and unload sessions where they can tell us, their friends, what it feels like to always be in survival mode, usually veiled in shyness and humor. #PeekaChat
A2: Creating math groups is a great way to teach Ss #SEL during academic learning. Students can learn about teamwork and perserverance while learning math together and working through problems and excersices #Peekachat
A2: You can incorporate #SEL into English Language Arts lessons through storybook read-alongs, vocabulary lessons, and situation role playing #Peekachat@Peekapak
A2 - History and Current Events are opportunities to dissect reasons for behaviors and alternative options. For example, "How could King George III have acted differently in order to have prevented the colonies from declaring their independence?" #Peekachat
A2: And I of course have to mention @Peekapak! Peekapak integrates seamlessly into ELA lessons so that you can teach #SEL and #ELA all at once! #Peekachat
A2: I #love Reader’s Theatre and the opportunity it provides a group of students to #collaborate and express who they are/where they come from! #PeekaChat
A2 I love using “free time” during Recess, Boost Up/Gym and Play Centers to help students develop Social Emotional skills, and problem slove using techniques we have learned in whole group! #PeekaChat

Q3: Time is always a concern for teachers and is probably one of the main reasons we don't do more with social-emotional learning! What are some low-prep, minimal classtime activities or techniques you use in your classroom? #SEL#Peekachat
A3: Creating a "Peace Place" or "Peace Corner" in your classroom for Ss to go to when they're feeling angry, down, or just need a moment to themselves is a great and easy way to encourage self-regulation #Peekachat
A3 - Every morning, we spend exactly ONE MINUTE watching @RMayTraining's #SchoolToolsTV and occasionally choose to spend another minute or two discussing it! Has had great impacts in our classroom! Check it out here: https://t.co/6BbAWSHlIX#Peekachat
A3: Having emotion check-ins with Ss is a quick #SEL activity that can help them get better at identifying their emotions and learning to manage them. It'll also give you a better understanding of how Ss are feeling and identify potential issues #Peekachat@Peekapak
A3: @Peekapak has a great emotional check-in and journaling tool that can help Ss and teachers identify and track how they're feeling throughout the week #Peekachat
A3: This is such a shame. #SEL is the foundation for all other successes in school. Brain breaks through @GoNoodle really hit on the #SEL framework. Great time to relax and reflect! #PeekaChat
I check in with my students first thing in the morning, as soon as they walk though you door. If the recognize their body is not ready to learn, Ss choose a tool to help them regulate and start off the day on a good note! #Peekachat

Q4: School isn't the only place where #SEL needs to take place. Children are faced with numerous social challenges at home, on teams, with friends, etc. What are some ways we can encourage our Ss to practice SEL skills outside of school & continue to grow socially? #Peekachat
A4: Getting Ss involved in the community by volunteering can help them become more empathetic, understanding of other people's struggles, and aware of what is happening in the community around them #Peekachat#empathy
A4: Don’t just expect kids to succeed with their #SEL skills immediately! Patience, persistence, and consistency in modeling from strong leaders goes a long way. #PeekaChat
A4 I think it is important to educate parents. Give them the same verbiage you us in the classroom, so they can practice with their children at home too! #Peekachat
A4 - When we have #ClassroomMeetings, I often bring up how they get along with their siblings or parents, how they interact with neighbors & friends, etc. Transferring SEL skills from the classroom their outside world is important with every skill, especially SEL! #Peekachat
A4: Asking parents to get involved with #SEL teaching will help Ss grow and practice SEL in different environments. Provide parents with resources like storybooks that they can read with Ss at home to encourage SEL outside of the classroom #Peekachat@Peekapak
