a1 #hogfbchat without a doubt. Summer #SKAQ work is a key component of what we do in order to be in the best position possible to be successful in the fall when 2-a-days begin
A1: I think as far as this summer goes, we will keep in the routine we have been in. Probably throw in some tire flip competitions for some fun!#hogfbchat
A1) We work a lot of grip strength. I’m trying something new this year and implementing DOT Drill to try and work quick feet. We also do a lot of Jammer. #hogfbchat
A1: we do drill work and offensive/defensive practice after lifting and conditioning. Our strength coach does a great job so we don’t have to input a lot of specialized things. He’s getting them right #hogfbchat
A1: I used to try to build the everyday type drills into certain workouts. When the skill guy did 7on7. The Ol needed to be out there doing those. #hogfbchat
A1: well... we are currently getting a nice field house built. They’re putting the finishing touches on it... so our athletic facilities are unusable. We will be doing outdoor workouts at a near by school where we are holding camp. It’ll be a team workout. #hogfbchat
A1: We do an hour and half of weights, core, and agilty and an hour and a half on the field, Indy, inside run, pass pro, team pass etc so yes, a lot. #hogfbchat
A1: we will do some extra work on certain days with stance, P2P, etc. that will allow us to progress to summer camp with that muscle memory already ingrained. #hogfbchat
A1: I think in preseason workouts and off-season we forget there is a lot of stuff we can do to SHAPE the way we approach contact.
Ask yourself what skills can be practiced without pads during or after workouts. It's like a batter in baseball using the batting cages #hogfbchat
A1. We start summer workouts 3xs a week in July. Basically mini camp, in helmets and running it like a practice. Can't have contact but can use bags. So we hit the ground running for 5 weeks before pads. Guess that makes up for no spring ball. #hogfbchat
A1 the main thing we will do in the offseason is working on snaps with the QBs and just taking the first couple steps. Really just working on the fundamental stuff #HOGFBCHAT
A1.) Day 1 of summer workouts but have spent the majority of the spring working on strength along with footwork. Explosion off the bat. Attacking to the end. A lot of sled work lately as well. (At least what I see. 😂) #HogFBChat
A1: used to do a lot of position specific movements, but the lack of true fat guy lineman have led me to believe in more explosive athletic types. Less Power I bodies, more spread and outside zone body types. #hogfbchat
A1: Our metal shop guys just built a new big boy sled for us so we will put that to work. We also do some stuff to work on mobility and flexion. A lot more time for details in the summer! #hogfbchat
A1: SOUPBONES from @LPAStrength with @Lanejohnson65 2 days a week in addition to our core lifts and metabolic circuits. Great start by the boyz today. #hogfbchat
A1: I love to. Not OL coach here, but I’m a firm believer in doing assignment stuff: stance, start, our favorite plays and their assignments. So they know when we start what to do. #hogfbchat
A1: Yup - during their workout I have them doing ATG Goblet Squats as a Stretch - low as they can get - to stretch hip flexor, IT band, groin, ankles, all that connective tissue. I believe this will transition to less injury and better stances/lower base ⚒️🐗⚒️#hogfbchat
A1: Hip Mobility and strength training. With drive/catch progression weekly throughout the summer (student-led based on things we did during the spring and with @Anderson_OLine) #hogfbchat
A1: Hip thrusts on field w/ weight sled, plus some hip mobility emphasis - I like hurdles for this. Looking for some in-stance band work. And some ankle mobility. Of course, heavy squat & deadlifting. #hogfbchat
#hogfbchat our school is currently being used as a movie set so our normal routine & area have been infringed upon but we're still getting it done. #ATLHollywoodSouth
A1: Typical Indy periods. Always working on technique. When the “cool kids” go play 7 on 7, we will do more agility stuff geared towards lineman. #hogfbchat
I’ve always said that OL is more cerebral than DL in the fact that there is more to learn regarding plays and what not. #elote linemen will know the footwork of all five guys, the TE, RB, and QB. But that’s just IMO. However, the physicality is still there. #hogfbchat
A2: tried to teach the Gallup one year. Didn’t workout great. I think it was because I didn’t fully understand the correct coaching points. Wouldn’t be against it though based on the individuals. #hogfbchat
A1: Cont. On the field in EDDs, I film their stances at the start of every week. If they don't get lower in the a$$, we're missing the Goblet Sq. stretch in the weight room. ⚒️🏋🏽♀️⚒️ #hogfbchat
A2) I actually taught it for the first time today at camp. I really like the way we fit into double teams and I liked it kept our shoulders square on our path to LB. I’m going to keep going with it. #hogfbchat
I’m not so sure that translates well to OL play, though. I was a HUGE proponent of ladders to build foot speed until I saw my OL’s footwork in practice and game start to slip. #hogfbchat
A2: On IZ doubles, yes. Keeps shoulders square. Dent the front and allow for either man to come off on backer. Changing it up for gap/power scheme this year. #hogfbchat
#hogfbchat A1 will go OL/DL one-on-ones while the little guys are at 7 on 7. Movement patterns specific to what we do.
H-c, who runs the weight room does a lot of great mobility and agility drills
A2) I do not only b/c I don’t coach a group. If I did, I wouldn’t until I received coaching. I read @VeteranScout’s @usafootball article on it and it was terrific. Just need hands-on coaching. And if you don’t follow Brandon you should. Amazing follow. #hogfbchat
In reply to
@CoachShiffman, @VeteranScout, @usafootball
A2. I’m not a offensive line coach but I’ve recently learned about the gallop step and as I learn more about it, I like it more and more every time. I haven’t fully grasped all the technique yet. #hogfbchat
#hogfbchat going to push it again this year at Camp. Haven't needed it as much as several years because the boys do such a great job staying hip-to-hip. I Always want to promote it because it does help them peel off to linebackers a little more efficiently.
A2. We don't but I'm certainly not opposed to learning more about it. We've been successful with what we've been doing so I'd be a hard sell.
#hogfbchat
#HogFBChat plays so many different roles but the intimidation, confidence and buy in are the best. You’ll see it when your OL cuts the sleeves off of every shirt to show off the guns
A2: similar, never called it that though but we just emphasize taking the down guy to the next level, I usually spend all summer teaching not to even come off at 2nd level just take the down guy to his lap #hogfbchat
A2: Not that exact terminology no, but something similar I’ve used in the past. Really tailor my scheme and concepts to the athletes I have. #HogFBChat
A2: incorporating it this year. Too many times where the uncovered player's second step would end up turning his hips, creating a lane for the defender to get penetration. Hoping the gallop will also allow time to properly read the near knee of the defender #hogfbchat
No. There are not of double teams in our scheme, but I teach hip to hip shoulders square. Don't break off DBL team until the LB commits. Preferably plant the DL in the LBs lap but I digress #hogfbchat
A2- I get why people gallop, it looks really good when auburn does it but for me near stepping and zone stepping is what we do... tried the gallop spent a lot of time working it and didn’t see any true payoff #hogfbchat
I agree there is a ton to know & only an idiot would think you can just plug guys in anywhere, with all that OL do in terms leg/hip drive, strike, and playing through angles, tough to see it as more mental esp being the 1 position on O with assured contact on each play #hogfbchat
We are going to do more of a downblock with uncovered guy to move DL laterally into A gap on power/gap. Picked up from Wyoming/North Dakota St. guard will call off for T if backer scrapes. #hogfbchat
A2: until now I had no idea that’s what it was called. Only a gallop if one man is doubling from a longer angle. Ummm like if the DL isn’t splitting the middle in a gap #HogFBChat
A2: We teach ‘gallup’ technique although we don’t use that terminology.
We teach it because we believe it helps us get hip-to-hip on our doubles with square hips and shoulders. Allows us to also climb to 2nd level with square hips. #hogfbchat
A2: Taught it late in the year last year. I think it allows your guys a better opportunity to keep hips square and have a better chance to come off on LB’s #hogfbchat
#hogfbchat also we were a heavy zone team last season now we’ve evolved into more gap scheme. 1-back power, Buck sweep, pin & pull, counter. With a little zone
A2: would love to know everyone’s thoughts on coming off on backers when doubling. Had a coach tell me at a camp this winter he doesn’t bother. Just focus on owning that front player you’re doubling #HogFBChat
I have no problem admitting I don't know something lol that's how I was fortunate to meet up with @Warhogs56 and learn about drive catch. Changed my football world. #hogfbchat
A2: We aren’t a huge group up front so we use them good ole wing t rules. Attack the hip to move the DL to the BSB. Gotta get movement and don’t think the gallop will help us. I like it just not with my group. #hogfbchat
A2 we will actually have our guys bear crawl double teams until we know handle that DL. Great and Easy for younger kids to get. 1. Step together to get hip to hip 2. Crawl that linemen out of the area. Teaching kids to use inside hand to split DL feet #Hogfbchat
a3 #hogfbchat As mine time as able before we split off. They're doing camp days with us now which is AWESOME. Coaches & kids on all levels should be doing the same things and speaking the same language
A2: Gallop technique is taught to an extent because some high school guys have a hard time picking up the concept and using that technique coming off smoothly to the next level... hip to hip and staying square on doubles more of points i harp on #hogfbchat
A2 We worked it this spring. Currently I just have one Lineman gallop while the other takes a lateral step to “get on” before they work vertical. I think my “inside” guy on the doubles is more square because of it. #HOGFBCHAT
Q3: As much time as possible. I will spend time coaching every level at the HS (Freshmen/JV/Varsity) each day once we officially start in August. #hogfbchat
A3) I’m trying something new this year. We will do post-practice with the young guys. 10-15 minutes strictly me coaching them. In regular Indy I’ve been blessed with great volunteers who take my young guys and work rep after rep. Helps a lot. #hogfbchat
A3: You must spend time and develop the youngsters they are your future we are a unit and we will treat all players as if they are starters! #hogfbchat
A3) when I had an OL I would teach the group. Old & young alike. Must build depth. Plus you want those guys ready when their number is up. Whether that’s this year or next or the year after that. #hogfbchat
A3: We will do a youth camp this summer. That’ll be an opportunity I work with the junior program. Then we will get a chance to work with our MS at their team Camp. #hogfbchat
A3: Our freshman lift and practice with us all summer long, so they are getting versed in our offense and defense 2x per week, in addition to being coached by our varsity coaches #hogfbchat
A3- I coach all levels freshman through varsity. They get the same work from the same coach/terminology all four years... I think this helps the development on our guys #hogfbchat
A3: JV and Varsity practice together, so I coach them all. We pull up a couple freshmen who show upper-tier talent each year to play/start on JV and get varsity coaching to accelerate their development as well #HogFBChat
oh yes plenty of mental prep goes into it, especially when you're preaching to them to trust the process, but the process pieces and results of those pieces are all physical #hogfbchat
I teach it like Monty python and holy grail with guys riding imaginary horses. I look dumb doing it for them, but they get it and we practice it on one-man sled. Long-short-Long with steps. #hogfbchat
A3: We have a freshman team which I have the honor of coaching this season, i flow V/JV/ Frosh and We want to use the same drills an terminology as we use with our varsity with our younger cats. Being with with all three levels helps me enforce termonology easier #hogfbchat
A3: I start every camp assuming my guys have forgotten everything they've ever been taught. Start at the beginning and progress as fast as they can. At the end of the second week I progress with those who can and remediate those who need it #hogfbchat
A3: I like to get them caught up. Helps the program when you don’t have to kill your starters every day if the young pups can give you reps in practice #hogfbchat
A3 (cont) I’ve taken over our Jr. High program and our young guys don’t seem so lost as they have in the past. They are getting the tech and communication in 7th/8th and it translated so far. I love it! #hogfbchat
A3: I’ll have the JV guys the first week of practice before they’ll split off. The younger guys will be at our Summer Camp for 3 days. Other than that I let the other line coaches coach. #HogFBChat
A3: I think it’s very essential to spend time with the younger guys. Not only does it keep them up to speed with the philosophy/techniques that your coaching, but it also makes them feel a part of that Family culture which is more important than x’s and o’s. #hogfbchat
Okay #hogfbchat I have 2% battery left and I am watching my daughter play tball I have to bow out! You guys rock! @CoachShiffman Will take it from here! Much love to all of you!
A3: We have our rising 9th graders in the weight room since February. I feel like time spent developing younger is well worth it. We try to give them the same attention if at all possible. Nut cutting time though that extra time goes to the varsity. #hogfbchat
A3.) I can answer this one! 😂 I tell my young WR’s to Listen to the formation and play call. Play the play in your head pre snap and watch the man ahead of you. Do so every rep. Every play.
Technique wise is working everyone together. Doesn’t hurt to start over #hogfbchat
A3: Try to work the younger guys in as much as possible over the summer. Learning how to work and how to approach drills is as important as technique for them #hogfbchat
#hogfbchat A3 would like to talk them everyday. I always make sure to at least get them equal reps pre-practice. Our HC is good to us so I can usually work them more towards the end of Indy. Or during specials.
A3: I have enough going on between weights, conditioning and varsity OL/specials. Blessed with a JV OL Coach who knows how to teach the fundamentals & one of our varsity assistants just got the middle school HC job. Teaching them young #HogFBChat
A3: you bet! Being the head Freshman coach and we expect to have all core 4 in run game in by #FreshmanSZN18 and we will spend tons of time with varsity staff all season to have them ready to play at the next level #hogfbchat
A3: try to get them the same exact coaching as the upper guys. Coaching small school ball you need depth. Coaching does that. You can’t neglect the youth #HogFBChat
A3: will work with them all summer, at team camp, & first week or so in August. Thinking about doing a camp for youth, middle, and jv guys to introduce them to what we do. Afraid when I get them, have to reteach them from scratch about stance, drive/catch, etc. #hogfbchat
I agree our freshmen lift and practice with us the entire summer but only the linemen and special young players will be invited to travel to team camps and 7/7 linemen challenges #hogfbchat
A3: We have been doing more of our indos work combining our Var & JVs. Very young group in both teams. Need to figure out reps in pods & team better, but have definitely seen big improvement in indiv. development & program identity & bonding. #hogfbchat
A2: Don't coach gallup - I want my guys to be as direct as possible, driving through - attacking right now. I coach 'economy of movement' - which in short means 'get there NOW and engage violently but with purpose ⚒️🐗⚒️ #hogfbchat
A3 9-12 practice the same things. We always highly encourage older guys to coach up younger and for our younger guys to ask our older guys questions #hogfbchat
My man @geoffschwartz has got me in a Crowther mindset today.
Posts, Drives and Chips are all fundamentals that can be taught on the Crowther Pan Sled. Here is a progression of drill work with game applications of those blocking fundamentals.
#TechniquesOverTactics#HookEm🤘🏼
a4 #hogfbchat I'm none of those so I don't. I get to focus 100% of my time on my guys and getting them prepared to do whatever the HC/OC wants us to get done.
A4: don’t have that problem anymore... but would script out pass Skelly and QB coach would tell me how it went/what didn’t work/what did, etc. when I was HC/OC. #hogfbchat
A4: Great question. I’m trying to find that balance myself. Ive taken up the roll of OC in addition to being the HC/OL coach. I think it’s essential to be an OC that you have coached OL or at the bare minimum understand blocking scheme. #hogfbchat
A4: I've only experienced it at the lower levels, but last year as the Frosh soph dc I tried to talk to them between plays and at half time. Other then that I don't have a ton of experience in it. #hogfbchat
A4) I asked for a Co-DC this year because I wasn’t able to spend the amount of time I needed with the OL on game day. I’ve given up the play calling to be able to make adjustments. As far as balance, it’s easier being separate sides of the ball. Weekend work is hardest #hogfbchat
A4: I’m out. My OC @coachabate reads through this every week and was giving me crap about my “3rd and 7? Run counter” answer a few weeks back. Lol #hogfbchat
A4: This might actually be my first season doing that(Varsity OL/JV OC) and I’m pretty interested to see how it goes. I’ll be leaning on guys like @CoachBDud heavy for advice honestly, zero shame #HogFBChat
A3: We do EDDs and Indies as 1 group. i.e. Frosh, JV coaches ad I all together. When I get into scheme I separate. This time of year I need to see what we've got - chemistry, strengths, etc. ⚒️🐗⚒️ #hogfbchat
A4. Got an all time great assistant also coaching OL with me. Trust him 100% with our guys. We don't platoon but if I need to do something with D or elsewhere on an O day, not even worried about the OL being in great hads. #hogfbchat
#hogfbchat A4 our h-c is the official OC, so he does all the planning & typing. I get the teach all the schemes the way I like them & call for trap when that 3 Tech is out of control. I have the 9th OC in the box w/ me. grizzled vet who asks for power & counter 45 times a game.
A4: In trying to officially answer the question. Having quality assistance to do 7 on 7 reps and other things like that is a must because OL aren’t part of that if it’s in your practice plan. The assistances have to understand the expectations of what you want done. #hogfbchat
A4: I hired & have invested the most over past 5 years in my OL coach (a former player) b/c the 1 season I wore OL & OC hats wasn't the most effective. OL is too important to part-time it #hogfbchat
A4: Hiring good guys on staff that you trust so you dont have to watch everything. O line is my passion I will try to stay with my guys during indy then put the HC hat on when its time for the rest of practice.... #Hogfbchat
A4: I’m waiting on that first OC position, but right now I am the run game Coordinator, I coach the OL, and I am involved in the offensive gameplanning. Learning a new offense from a HC and OC that know it much better than me. Great spot to be! #hogfbchat
A4: for me it’s actually tougher during the week. Most of our guys go both ways, so Friday’s it’s done on the fly. I felt spread thin at practice hopping around to Indy and 7 on 7 sessions. Key is FIND POSITION COACHES YOU TRUST AND BELIEVE IN! #HOGFBCHAT
A4) Making sure that the other assistants fully understand the concepts is huge. Being able to delegate some of the responsibilities is a must. Would still love to hear more ideas on how to do this more effectively. #hogfbchat
And that's a wrap! Thank you all again for being here tonight for the #hogfbchat and making Monday night the best night of the week! Thanks to @CoachDingus as always for his help with the chat #AllGasNoBrakes#GoGo
A4: Have assistant coaches that you trust. If I’m coaching the OL for Indy while skills are running 7 on 7, I trust those guys to do their thing. When we run team period I watch more of what the QBs do and breakdown OL on practice film. #hogfbchat
Please remember to follow your fellow coaches for weekly chats and collaborations! This business wouldn't be what it is without the amazing coaches involved in it! Thank you all for what you do on a daily basis #hogfbchat
A4: Thankfully I have my own world in OL and can focus on the run game. If I were OL+OC+HC, my head would explode. What I'd do as OC would bore the stands to tears - RTP Baby! Pound the rock until their will be broke! Uptempo getting 3-4 yds a carry! ⚒️🐗⚒️ #hogfbchat
If anybody has any questions or topics that they would like discussed on the chat, please do not hesitate to DM those ideas to myself or @CoachDingus and we will get them on the chat when we can. #hogfbchat
We will be having a special guest host on the next #hogfbchat on June 11th. The guys at @InsideTheHeadst will be our hosts! Can't wait to have you guys on and see what you have in store for the chat!
If any of y’all want to talk ball, just holler at me on here or shoot me an email. Summer time is a great time to get together and talk shop if you’re not too far away. #TalkingBall#hogfbchat
A4: My first year I tried to do it all. It only causes more stress and distraction. Have to learn to trust people. Can’t control it all. Part of the HC learning process. #hogfbchat
Great time this week coaches! Learned a ton as always! If anyone is interested, coach @adammwilson and I are starting a bible study tomorrow on the bible app. Lemme know if you want to join us! Have a blessed week everyone! #hogfbchat

@CoachShiffman, @CoachDingus, @adammwilson
We’d like to thank our official sponsor GameStrat! They provide teams with the most reliable and advanced sideline replay system. Check them out https://t.co/Ywj2bC07FP@GameStrat_#Hogfbchat
#hogfbchat a2 yes. Learned it from #Puma at @CMUMavsFootball I not only teach it for DBL teams but for solo down blocks. Love the hip placement on dbl teams the momentum you can create. Quicker contact on second step and more natural punch. Great for gap and zone double teams.
A4- It’s not easy task, but it all comes down to having a great practice plan & trusting your staff on Friday nights. Having control of the oline gives me the opportunity to push the tempo when needed. I know when they can push a lil harder or they are sluggish.
#hogfbchat
#Hogfbchat a1 do less position work on your toes and more on your heels. Some is good but too much becomes irrelevant. Less ladder work, more walk through steps. Less running more squatting, deadlifting.
A4 my first year as DC I was also OL coach it was def difficult to juggle both. I was lucky to have experienced guys around me that were able to bounce ideas off of. It also helped that our staff didn’t put pride in front of progress. If you need help ask. #hogfbchat
Chat done- Kayak loaded. Off to the bypass to catch this girls Mama! (Had a solid 7 - 7.5 on Saturday till she jumped and spit the frog. I really need to get a boat to stand and hunt!) #hogfbchat
#hogfbchat a3 at being OC. Need a good QB coach and help running Indy. Believer in teaching player how to practice/accountability Drills that allow you to float. It’s great for perspective for OC and Oline coaches though. OC-what can the line do? Oline- understand pass game etc
A4: Going into my first year doing that (OL/OC). So far so good. As stated earlier, definitely have to have some backbone kinda guys coaching the skills. If those guys aren’t cutting it, it’s gonna be a long stressful season. #hogfbchat
A3: In summer we hold two hr workouts 3x a week for our JV & Varsity. They are broken up by position instead of by team. 1 group lifts while other does field work w/ varsity coaches. Our mod team come 2x a week. valuable for skill building & relationship building #HogFBChat
A3: Equally important to teach younger level staff. As Frosh coach I always appreciated working with Varsity OL coach to make sure we were teaching same concepts and using same/similar verbiage #hogfbchat
I think I went too much OC last year. I fell victim to wanting to be too involved in everything. Gonna stick with my OL. Have my other Coaches help run offensive practice. #HogFBChat
I will rotate down to coach OL on JV. If I can’t I completely trust @Yerashunas72 to coach what we need up front. We are 100% on the same page. #hogfbchat
