I'm Denis, MAth teacher since 1999, Director of Student Achievement in @WeehawkenTSD and Author of Instant Relevance and the soon to be relased Hacking Mathematics! #EduAR
A1: For me, it's music. I play sax, sing, my wife is a pro choral artist, my kids are all in music. There are so many ways to connect that passion to math! Trig, Counting, and just the experiences had when engaging in music! #EduAR#MakeItReal
A1: I love gardening and all things plants, my room is actually plant/growth mindset themed! I often bring this hobby/interest into conversations and real world problems with arrays, measurement, money...you name it! #eduar
A1: I love to write, and that is how I best express myself. Thinking mathematically requires a processing system similar to writing thoughts....both require a high level of metacognition. #EduAR#MakeItReal
And both require revision, reflection, and communication before they're complete. No one wrote the book on the first try, and math problems that can be solved on the first try probably aren't worth asking #EduAR#MakeItReal
This year I have had them make the anchor charts we use in class and they get more creative than I could have. We ended up using all the anchors charts and turned them into wallpaper. #EDUAR#Makeitreal
A1: Tennis! I โค๏ธ to play!! The skills I continue attain through perseverance can be transferred to any classroom setting! Students need to know that perseverance will always lead to success! @growthmindset1#EduAR
A2: A student asked how he could make what was in his brain visible for his friends! We worked together on using a graphic organizer in MATH to help transfer his constructed knowledge from his brain to paper. It was a SUCCESS! #EduAR

A2: learning to build equations with variables (4th)-S asked why isnโt the vertical notation an equation? Or is it? We (Ss, push in interventionist, & me) had to really think and talk about what she was asking and what we were trying to teach with the horizontal notation #eduar
A2: Conversation about Superbowl Commercials led to, "Is That Superbowl Ad Really Worth It?" - Ss explored the costs of filming, buying air time, as well as sales trends to make a decision! #makeitreal#eduar
A1: Outside of school I volunteer at a pediatric oncology camp that occurs in the town I teach in each summer. I use my work with the camp to discuss real world problems relating to planning large events and inspire/model empathy #EduAR#makeitreal
A2: Conversation about Superbowl Commercials led to, "Is That Superbowl Ad Really Worth It?" - Ss explored the costs of filming, buying air time, as well as sales trends to make a decision! #makeitreal#eduar
A2: Ss wanted to know why positive rotation was counterclockwise...realized it was based on star and how they move across the night sky...๐คฆ๐ปโโ๏ธ never thought about it before just excepted what I was told. #eduAR
Wow. And this can inspire passion in other students to embrace and support causes like this as well. This is near to me as we support the Leukemia society after the loss of a 1 yr old friend. #EduAr#MakeITReal
A2. We were finding percent of a number through commission of a real estate agent. All the sudden a student asked about mortgages. "Oh let me tell you about that!" I say! Then we chatted about mortgages and CREDIT CARD percentages. So POWERFUL! ##EduAR
A2) My students asked me to relate the math more to art and we began to design word problems around things in our neighborhood, great mini unit #EDUAR#Makeitreal
A3: Did you see the Indy Colts and Buffalo Bills Game Sunday! 4 inches of snow on the field. Check out how Adam Vinatieri kicks in that, and what it means to his salary! https://t.co/dzrS8WDa2Z#eduar#makeitreal
A2: When learning about customary capacity students wanted to know about fluid ounces, despite note being covered in the book. We pulled out our extensive hand lotion collection and compared container shapes and sizes to capacity measures #eduAR#makeitreal

A3: weโve really only had a few temperature dips, nothing major. But, incorporating math and science with weather/data tracking and analyzing is something I try to do at least once each year #eduar
So many options! Graphing temperature change, comparing numbers with precip amounts in different regions, noting patterns in wind speed & temperature in different locations #EduAR#MakeItReal
Sometimes it's the weather somewhere else that is best. Like using the California fires to talk about convection currents, then trying to solve the problem with what tey've learned #eduar#makeitreal
I like to go beyond measurement whenvever possible and ask questions like "is what happened normal?" "What would you do to protect your home from this next time?" "how can we move that flood water to that drought area?" #eduar#makeitreal
A3: Last week's SuperMoon and the California Wildfires offer opportunities for Ss to explore relevant content and bridge connections to math - distance conversations, area, etc #eduar#MakeItReal
A3: we had a flake or two โ๏ธfall the other day..weโve studied transformations so I decided Ss needed to make some โ๏ธ for the bulletin board outside my room; a few said they had never made one #eduAR
I have a story in Instant Relevance about how I used a Snow Day conversation with my daughter to build a lesson that connected to Ss who'd been through the same thing! #eduar#makeitreal
Nice, but all snowflakes are hexagons, which I love to have kids think about. Then they have to keep trying to cut them into hexagons...without actually cutting out a hexagon, only using folded cuts! #eduar#makeitreal
A4) I tried to connect the content to a show early in the year but failed, found my success when tying it to the NFL when we come back on Monday. #EDUAR#Makeitreal
A4: I love cooking shows like Chopped and Iron chef. I use them as structures for activities. We do Chopped Problems where students are given "ingredients" and solve problems with them. #eduar#makeitreal
My school is very low income and not everyone had access to the same content. Not everyone had access to look things up on YouTube either. I can do it, but will have to figure it out within class #EDUAR#Makeitreal
Not a TV Show - but leveraged the interest in Fantasy Football with a group of Ss - learned to write equations in Google Sheets to calculate totals, analyze trends, and make predictions about future results. #eduar#makeitreal
A4: surprisingly, many of them are watching stranger things (heck no for my 9 year old! Lol!) but they are super into it. Our skill of focus right now is division (2 by 2, 3 by 1, and 4 by 1), so I could try to work that in via situational multistep problems. #eduar
Awesome! That is a foundationally great story for some math problems. Tell his story and have them do work on stats from his time to now. #eduar#makeitreal
A5: The changes in prices of my xfinity bill... What is the most cost effective package for Miss Raleigh if she needs to have at least highspeed internet and basic cable? #Eduar#makeitreal
A4: Most of my Ss this year spend their time reading at home. Many of our discussions focus on book characters like Harry Potter or books many of them have read like Wonder #Eduar#makeitreal
A5: My Christmas tree! Thank you for this idea!!!! I love estimation tasks during number talks - shout out @Estimation180 ! How many ornaments are on Mrs. Fryars tree?! Better get to counting now.... #eduar
A5: Iโm holding an iPhone5...looking at my 7โ tablet and watching these bright color rush units on ThursdayNight๐ on a 40โ flat screen tv...similarity & proportions #EDUAR
Ilove using food and the kitchen. Ihad my kids "describe a hershey bar" to me the other day. moved from "rectangle" to "rectangular PRism" to "12 pseudo-trapezoidal prisms connected together" #eduar#makeitreal
A6: Big issues, like net neutrality, tax reform and more all have huge math implications and foundations. Lots to discover there while the issues are still hot #MakeItReal#EduAR
A7: Math and Social Studies- we are working on the @phillyzoo unless project and we are contantly using place value to compare numbers related to Panama vs Pine Barrens and water conservation. #eduar#MakeItReal
A6: My 5th graders love CNN 10. I think it's because they feel like I'm treating them as adults. I like to integrate the news on there to any subject area! #EduAR#MakeITReal
A7: we are constantly sense making no matter what the content area. We also often think about how we can think about big picture type things and how all the info is relevant and interacts. No more silos! #bansilos#itsallrelevant#EduAR
A7)We bought tulips for our science project and used the receipts for consumer math. Talked about tulipmania, would be fun to relate that to BitCoin #EDUAR#Makeitreal
A7: I love finding the hidden connections. Like MAth/ELA, but in structure. In ELA, Ss claim, give supporting evidence, conclude. WE do in math too, but use different language. So I overlap the two languages and connect the courses #MakeItReal#EduAR
Awesome! When two Ss disagree on a solution or part, I tell them "convince the other person you're right" and their math language becomes so much better! #MakeItReal#EduAR
