A1 Have data on how your child is doing now. What’s the present level of performance? What the biggest struggle that you see or hear about? Effective #IEP goals rely on meeting a child where they're at to help them move them forward. #ldchat
A1 Also ask the question, "Where is my/this child in comparison to grade-level standards?" It's not about how they compare to other students; it's about finding ways to get to those grade-level standards. (FAQs About Standards-Based IEPs https://t.co/pDcgujCRa1) #ldchat
A1. My best IEP goal tip is to focus on age. My HS students have dreams, not just academics. We need to help them achieve them. Look to their strengths. #LDchat

Q2. #IEP goals don’t have to be related to academics. What are some examples of non-academic goals that may benefit a child with learning and attention issues? #ldchat
A2 I would love to see every child eventually have #IEP goals around self-advocacy. It's so important to teach kids to speak up for what they need. As hard as it is for parents (and I'm one of them!), eventually we have to hand that over to our kids. #LDchat

A2. My older students with ADHD benefit from social and soft skills. There's nothing more important than getting along with people in college and at work. Help them in class by setting an example. Focus on the positives. #LDchat
A2 Some kids also benefit from having goals around behavior and self-regulation. Sometimes inappropriate behavior and frustration can get in the way of getting the academic work done, but kids need explicit teaching about how else to cope or respond. (My kids!) #LDchat

That's an interesting question. I would say start by making sure to ask what to expect along the way. What will this look like as he gets closer to learning X? #LDChat
Yes but how do I know if they are to light? For instance if they are padding your child’s goals to accomplish them. This coming from a person not in education
A3 A parent is an integral part of the #IEP team, so keeping up with how things are going is important. Plus, you are on the front lines. You know if homework is a trial, you hear from your child and you see your child in a way the rest of the team doesn't. #LDChat
A3 /1 Firstly, make sure you understand the goals fully and if you don't, ask. Ask things like, "How will this be measured?" "What will I see when my child starts making progress?" "What can I be doing at home to help?" #LDchat
A3 /2 Secondly, ask questions of your child ("How's speech going?"), keep in touch with the teacher regularly to check-in, keep work samples and keep track of your own questions or concerns. #LDchat
A3 /3 Lastly, don't forget that the overall goal of goals is to help your child learn. If your child seems not to be making progress, you can (and should) revisit the #IEP to see what changes may need to be made. #LDchat
A3: Teachers need to be transparent with data collection. Share methods, graphs, involve parents in the process. Google sheets and Seesaw are great ways to share and collaborate! #LDChat
Parents of teens with LD and ADHD should monitor progress at home. Verbal and non-verbal. What they see is different than what teachers experience. Share ideas. #LDchat

Speaking up, asking questions, honoring your child is not something to be quiet. Need to be heard and understood as part of consensus in the best interest of the child. #LDChat
Q4. Parents, what’s one thing you wish the rest of the #IEP team would consider upon setting goals?
Educators, what’s one thing you wish parents would consider? #ldchat
I love that you brought this up. Teachers want what's best for their students. I'm not a proponent of an "us vs. them" approach to #IEP meetings at all. #LDChat

A4 We love thheir kids, but I wish parents would consider that their child is not my only one. MS/HS teachers have more than 30/class, 8 classes/day. It's exhausting. #LDchat
