    First question... #ldchat
  • UnderstoodOrg Jan 17 @ 12:06 PM EST
Q1. What are your best tips and strategies for setting effective #IEP goals? #ldchat
  • AmandaMorin Jan 17 @ 12:07 PM EST
A1 Have data on how your child is doing now. What’s the present level of performance? What the biggest struggle that you see or hear about? Effective #IEP goals rely on meeting a child where they're at to help them move them forward. #ldchat
  • AmandaMorin Jan 17 @ 12:08 PM EST
A1 Also ask the question, "Where is my/this child in comparison to grade-level standards?" It's not about how they compare to other students; it's about finding ways to get to those grade-level standards. (FAQs About Standards-Based IEPs https://t.co/pDcgujCRa1) #ldchat

A2 I would love to see every child eventually have #IEP goals around self-advocacy. It's so important to teach kids to speak up for what they need. As hard as it is for parents (and I'm one of them!), eventually we have to hand that over to our kids. #LDchat

A2 Some kids also benefit from having goals around behavior and self-regulation. Sometimes inappropriate behavior and frustration can get in the way of getting the academic work done, but kids need explicit teaching about how else to cope or respond. (My kids!) #LDchat

  • AmandaMorin Jan 17 @ 12:21 PM EST

  • AmandaMorin Jan 17 @ 12:21 PM EST
A3 A parent is an integral part of the #IEP team, so keeping up with how things are going is important. Plus, you are on the front lines. You know if homework is a trial, you hear from your child and you see your child in a way the rest of the team doesn't. #LDChat

Q3. Why is it important for a parent to monitor the progress of her child’s #IEP goals, and what are some ways she might do this? #ldchat
  • AmandaMorin Jan 17 @ 12:22 PM EST
A3 /1 Firstly, make sure you understand the goals fully and if you don't, ask. Ask things like, "How will this be measured?" "What will I see when my child starts making progress?" "What can I be doing at home to help?" #LDchat
