#Satchat is a weekly Twitter conversation for current and emerging school leaders that takes place every Saturday morning at 7:30 EST. Co-founders and co-moderators are Brad Currie, Scott Rocco, and Billy Krakower. #Satchat's mission is to expand educator's Personal Learning Network (PLNs) that in turn will promote the success of all students.
Good morning! I am an aspiring school leader (Ed Leadership student) and instructional technology specialist from Virginia Beach. Excited for my first #satchat
Good Morning #satchat Jon, middle school Principal of @DASD_LMS from SE PA checking in. Hanging in my quiet house with this goofball named Finn McCool. Ready to learn and grow my PLN.
A1: Evaluation is assessing performance... for me- how well am I able to support others, communicate ideas, work collaboratively, and push forward quality educational practices. #satchat
Welcome everyone!
I'm Scott, proud Superintendent of @WeAreHTSD and co-founder of #satchat
Thank you for joining us this morning as we talk about evaluating educators.
Good morning #satchat. 4th and 5th grade teacher and Dean of Professional Growth from Maine. I wish I had more time for the chat but will happily engage for as long as I can.
Good morning from Williamsburg, VA! I’m a Technology Integration Specialist and in the Ed. S program @ODUMonarchLEAD for K-12 admin/supervision #satchat
A1: To me, evaluation is assessing & creating a plan for the future. If the assessment is not positive, how do we improve, if the assessment is positive, how can we continue. #SatChat
A1: This is the truth. And I'm sorry, because I really am an optimist. It means "duck and cover" and "Hundreds of hours of data. I was excited for it before we started (thought it'd be collab/feedback) but the reality's different. (cont) #satchat
A1:The meaning of evaluation has changed over my career. When I started it meant fear of not doing things right. Today it means ways to improve as an educator. #satchat
A1: The word evaluation to me goes hand in hand w/ REFLECTION. Evaluation is all about objectively seeing what's working & what could use improvement, continually working towards the best practice #satchat
A4: Consistency and calibration in expectations is the most important. Identifying the need to craft meaningful feedback with peers if support it needed. Spending time developing shared expertise among the observers. #satchat
A1 To me, evaluation means to consider and reflect on practice in order to reach a desired goal. Evaluation is not just supervision. It is an invitation for ongoing dialogue from both colleagues and supervisors. #satchat
Morning everyone! It’s been a little bit of polar and a bit of the tropics in Va over the last couple of weeks but.. daffodils are up and the turn to spring is happening #satchat
A1: My operating view of evaluation has changed as I have changed roles, but I like to correlate evaluation to that of student evaluation. What is the purpose? For me, it is to give feedback and help them improve. That transitions to teaching evaluations as well. #satchat
A1 My definition for all members of a learning community: evaluation is the process of pausing, reflecting, gauging progress, adjusting plans, and re-engaging in a learning goal. #satchat
A1 Evaluation means examining the effectiveness and viability of something. For education it could mean a program or event but most typically used to examine teaching practice and effectiveness of a teacher in the classroom. #satchat
A1: Evaluation means to me that there is always room for improvement. You don’t know what you know unless someone points it out. Status quo is not an option for me, for you, or anyone else #satchat
A1: To me, evaluation means a process used to assess and promote growth. It is not necessarily my favorite part of the job tbh. Hoping to get some ideas from #satchat on how to make it more meaningful.
2/ My best lessons (judged by kid reviews and their enthusiasm/learning in the rest of the unit) were rated the worst. My canned "for eval" script: the best. The data took hundreds of hours. Statistically invalid. And people call in sick to tabulate it. Must change. #satchat
A1: Evaluation means areas of success and areas where there is room for improvement. Hopefully, it also means an opportunity for reflection and growth. #satchat
A1. Evaluation is the standardized process of rating & assessing the teaching effectiveness of educators. T performance evaluations aim to help promote a better learning experience for Ss & foster professional growth for educators. #satchat
A1 what it's supposed to be and what it sometimes feels like are two different things. :( Should be an opportunity for growth knowing we all have something to learn. #satchat
A1: Tool used to measure student achievement based on observation of teaching domains. It is not good at "GROWING" a teacher. However, it IS USED to create performance reviews to get rid of teachers when necessary. #satchat
A1: Evaluation means observing and providing meaningful feedback on the instruction you as the admin have been informally supervising throughout the year #satchat
A1: The older I get the easier it is to accept the term "evaluation" as a valuable thing. When done properly, It should be a way to get valuable feedback to improve our craft as educators. #satchat
Ideally, teacher evaluation is the collaborative process of analyzing a snapshot in time in order to celebrate successes, explore opportunities for growth and reflect on one's ability to enhance his or her impact on student learning. #satchat#leadership#education
A1. Evaluation refers to the formal process a school uses to review & rate Ts’ performance & effectiveness in the classroom. Ideally, the findings from these evaluations are used to provide feedback to Ts & guide their PD. #satchat
"I am not insulted at the condescending insinuation that I might be gay, because I don't think anyone who is LGBTQ has anything to apologize for or be ashamed of—It's really pretty simple."
#SaturdayMorning#SaturdayMorning#SatChathttps://t.co/AxCUJ9zVfY
A1. I think it's feedback for me as an educator...How am I teaching in the classroom, interacting with Ss, families, colleagues...an observation of if learning opportunities are seen in the room. #satchat
A1: Evaluation is taking stick of where one is in order to know where one is going; it reveals the adjustments that need to be made in order to achieve success. #satchat
A1: An evaluation *should* measure what we value. If we value authenticity, critical pedagogies, equity, etc., then it’s important to examine our practices; determining the relationship between what we value and outcomes. #satchat
It should be, Carla. But I coined a term. "Data depression." It's real.
1. People are leaving teaching over this.
2. People are misusing data. I know this because I use a lot of data outside edu. It's simple, formative, and takes no time to get/process. #satchat
This is a really wonderful model to be cognizant of as we evaluate ourselves, others, and receive evaluative feedback #satchat Thank you for sharing @3_DLeadership
A1: Evaluation is an opportunity to think and reflect about your practice. Because of the structure in education, it is also a chance to have a discussion and get input about tour practice. #satchat
#Satchat A1 Evalution should be based on the process of educating, planning, interacting, implementing of a lesson, maintaining rapport. Too much of #teacher evaluation is now based on how closely the teacher follows the manual. That is not authentic #teaching.
A1.2 With that being said, as an IC my observations are formative in nature and for growth. Ts then view evalauation as the summation of their teaching. It’s higher stakes for them, but hopefully through my feedback along the way, they feel confident in doing their best. #satchat
#SatChat A1 Teacher Evaluation is not a "gotcha" I'm not trying to catch you doing something wrong. I'm here to see what's going well and how I can support you to be the best teacher for your students.
A1 (1) Evaluation should be a touch point by a leader who has been there and done it, or has deep instructional knowledge of the standard(s), strategy, program, or content being observed... #satchat
A1. The primary purpose of evaluation is personal & professional growth that leads to improved performance. The principal (or other evaluator) acts as a facilitator for each T, just as the T serves as a facilitator for Ss in the classroom. #satchat
Evaluation has so much negative connotation associated with it. We must approach with a positive, growth mindset, and evaluators must engage in the process too - honestly and transparently. #Satchat
Great point, unfortunately not everyone has the same operational definition and evaluations often elicit stress in the evaluatee. It takes a shift in culture to see the benefits #satchat
A1: My operating view of evaluation has changed as I have changed roles, but I like to correlate evaluation to that of student evaluation. What is the purpose? For me, it is to give feedback and help them improve. That transitions to teaching evaluations as well. #satchat
Interesting that my experience has been the exact opposite. And as I got out there--nationally--and really started to improve, that's when it micromanaged and made me feel worse, right at the moment of growth.
#satchat
I made sure to add that because I have seen some used as just a "gotcha", especially when there's a power struggle between admin. and a teacher. #satchat
A1: The word evaluation for me has evolved over time in my T career & with different admin. When I started out it felt like a huge pressure. With my 3rd admin it always felt like a "gotcha moment". Now with my current position, it feels like an opportunity to grow. #satchat
#satchat A1 If you are a beliver in the #growthmindset, then you know that we all have gifts and goals for improvement. A good administrator recognizes both.
Well said. An important step in the process is to help Edus frame purposeful goals and provide support in helping them grow towards that goal. #satchat
A1 (2) Evals, collectively, should paint a picture of what is happening in any given classroom. Ts can take meaningful feedback and apply it to their curriculum, structures, organization, and/or methods to make them more effective. #satchat
A1: Evaluation meets opportunity for growth, feedback and professional discourse. It's an opportunity for risk taking and productive transformation. It's an opportunity to be better than the day before for students. #satchat
A1 #satchat I completely agree! I just went to a conference with @rickwormeli2 and I think he would too!! Also; hi guys!! I’m Nebraska/Rebecca from indiana.
#satchat A1a In the broadcast video for clinician PD I spend most my time in evaluation means finding the value of the training to the organization. It’s apart from assessment, figuring out how much #knowhow was transferred to the learner..
A1: Evaluation is a growth opportunity - what am I doing well, where can I improve, what could be better if it were different - if the evaluation is done well. #Satchat
Good morning everyone! A1- I think of evaluation as an opportunity to look at the impact of our work. It offers a chance for reflection and growth. The impact of an evaluation comes not from what is on the paper but rather the conversations around the work. #satchat
We spend way too much time talking about data and identifying points of concern, but little time spent on corrective teaching action to correct it ... we are better at collecting data than fixing the issue #satchat
Shifting the mindset to support and growth in the teacher’s mind often transfers to how the teacher “evaluates” students: a win-win for the whole school #SatChat
#SatChat A1 Teacher Evaluation is not a "gotcha" I'm not trying to catch you doing something wrong. I'm here to see what's going well and how I can support you to be the best teacher for your students.
#satchat. I like this. It’s so easy to forget that administrators are instructional leaders because they have so many others tasks on their plate. But if we are going to see them as facilitators of Ts professional growth, we need to give them more time to do this well.
A1. The primary purpose of evaluation is personal & professional growth that leads to improved performance. The principal (or other evaluator) acts as a facilitator for each T, just as the T serves as a facilitator for Ss in the classroom. #satchat
A2: Feedback is certainly the most important aspect of any evaluation. Consistency is key because we must take each one as an opportunity to validate each other & grow together. Each should build on the last as we reflect & enhance our practice. #satchat
@ScottRRocco A.1 The word evaluation to me means assessment. It also is an opportunity for me to learn where my strengths are and my areas of opportunities for improvement. #satchat
A2: Because it can't be a "gotcha". The more consistent evaluators can be in classrooms, the more authentic the conversation. It builds trust and trust is critical to the evaluation process. #satchat
Hi #satchat.. good morning. It’s a little before six a.m. here in Arizona. I’m up early to get ready for and travel to #EdCampTucson. Gonna leave soon. It’s a n almost two hour drive from here in Chandler.
I have honestly never given much value to the evaluation process from either end. I’m more of an “on the spot”/ teachable moment evaluator. With the rise of the Danielsson framework in PA, it has become too standardized. #SatChat
#satchat
A1: How evaluation is currently being used & interpreted: A compilation of measures to arrive at a score to categorize a teacher. This model is NOT conducive to risk taking for teachers to attempt meaningful change.
I'm sure it is real. And I don't blame teachers for leaving over this. It also bothers me because when I evaluate, I want to model what I'd like my Ts to do when they evaluate Ss. I want them to feel that I see their strengths & support them in their desire to grow.
#satchat
I love this. That is the current mindset of my admin team, but I have worked in an environment where it was used as a "gotcha" and I almost left the profession. So glad I found someone that is a supportive admin and there for the Ss. #Satchat
HMW provide opportunities for peers to engage in the eval process as define by this #satchat? We can build the capacity for colleagues to provide critical feedback to peers based on their personal professional goals.
Good morning ☀️ I am Abby French from Woodstock, VA. I teach USI to sixth graders. It’s been an interesting week to be a teacher discussing things like politics, government, racism, and Black History Month. #satchat
I think this depends on your admin and how they view it and make you feel. I have had admin that it definitely felt like a way for them to "flex their muscle", while others it felt like an opportunity to grow. #satchat
A2 it’s important to evaluate on a continual basis because then you are marking progress, seeing growth and celebrating success along the way. You have to follow up soon after giving feedback to see if changes to practice are happening. #satchat
A1:Evaluations today are opportunity to check in with admins & teachers to see where they are. What’s going well? What’s needs some growth? How can admin help with goals and growth? #satchat
A2 If evaluations aren't done consistently, it's just a point in time that is seen. Classroom visits, walkthroughs or mini-observations, and formal observations should all be a part of an educator's (teacher, administrator, or assistant) evaluation. #satchat
A2. Is it possible that consistent evaluation puts some educators under pressure? I was on a recent project like this, and I felt I could not work the way i do normally #satchat
A2 Consistent evaluation leads to growth. Familiarity with the teachers class and pedagogy helps evaluators coach the instructor in the most effective way towards excellence. Inconsistent evaluation leads to static teaching and learning. #satchat
A2: The more you get feedback, the easier it is to reflect then PDCA (Plan, Do, Check, Adjust). It's super important to keep your personal feelings out of the process as much as possible. #satchat
A2: It’s important that teachers and administrators are evaluated on a consistent basis so that they can be recognized for the amazing work they are doing to promote the success of students #satchat
A1: The word evaluation to me goes hand in hand w/ REFLECTION. Evaluation is all about objectively seeing what's working & what could use improvement, continually working towards the best practice #satchat
A2. We need to support, provide feedback and nudge educators to strive for excellence. That can only happen with frequent classroom visits with frequent conversations. #satchat
Because it's important to know what the heck is going on! That's the start. You can use it for praise, for reflection, for gentle feedback, etc. But impossible to do if you don't know what's happening. #satchat
A2 anytime I have a goal, if I don't regularly reflect and assess my progress and seek counsel of someone with expertise with my growth area my efforts are random, at best. Consistent evaluation encourages progress #satchat
A2. A one-hour class observation can provide insight & spark conversation but, in isolation, can only tell us so much. To gain a true sense of our teaching—what’s working & what isn’t—takes a thoughtful & holistic approach. #satchat
Yes! Too often evaluation is delivered/received/perceived as criticism which then brings defensiveness, fear, resentment, etc. It doesn't have to be that way #satchat
We need to be in a perpetual state of evaluation because we are in a constant state of evolution. It is a spiral ... we are making ourselves better and we can’t always see what needs to be changed from our perspective #satchat
#SatChat A2
We all need feedback. We all need to know that our boss and colleagues care enough about our students and us to observe us routinely. When done well, it helps make us better.
A2) Consistent feedback is valuable to any profession/career. Our teachers and students deserve continuous improvement - success is not linear #satchat
A2: The "informal" in fall & "formal" in spring is not enough. This system creates an anxiety feeling, waiting for it to be "over." However, a team approach, frequent conversations, decreases anxiety & builds relationships; the seed for GROWTH #satchat
1/I have written books on this. :) But step one of the solution: simplify. Evals are SOOO complex and high stakes. We only see evaluators 3x every 2-3 years. And then some people get the easy guy some get the hard guy--it's not equitable. #satchat
A2: We are constantly growing & learning as people & educators. We collect information from colleagues & Ss regularly. Our evaluations need to meet Ts where they are & foster the growth process in that moment #satchat
A2. Effective teaching does not occur by chance. Because there are many dimensions to pedagogical work, it is best to use multiple measures involving multiple sources of data to evaluate the range of instructional activities over a period of time. #satchat
A2: Ongoing evaluation is critical to grow teacher capacity, one way to show interest in teacher’s honing their craft, and a formal process to build a professional community within a building #satchat
A2: We should be evaluated on a consistent basis to ensure growth. Change should occur between point A and B. Evaluation points are points to reflect, discuss, learn, and grow. #satchat
Huge! The conversations you have after being evaluated are what make it valuable. #satchat If the negatives are the focus, it's hard to recover from that.
A2- It is similar to the importance of ongoing assessment with students. We want to catch behaviors and practices early that aren’t having the biggest positive impact and provide the needed support to guide that person in being their best. #satchat
2/ The people w 25 students collect data on 25 students. I had to on 180 one year and 256 another. One year... portfolios. 8 spreadsheets... of NONSENSE. (outside of here I work in tech. I have spreadsheets. But they're useful and easy). #satchat
A2: I think that it is MORE important to receive frequent observations and opportunities to reflect, whether that is through video, a coaching cycle, or admin feedback. The imperative word is REFLECTION. Reflective practitioners make a greater impact on instruction. #satchat
A2: If we are talking “formal” evaluations, it’s not important. It’s a dance and a process that most educators find pointless. What IS important is regular informal evaluations with meaningful feedback to help the individual grow. #satchat
A2 When we stop evaluating and reflecting on our instruction or performance we stop growing and learning. That’s why teaching is called a practice, we’re always working on being better for kids. #satchat@TheBradCurrie@ScottRRocco@wkrakower
A2: It is important for Ts to be evaluated because otherwise how can you "Level up"? If you don't know wha you need to improve on and reflect on how you cando that then you become stuck and is when the Ss suffer. #satchat
We get *critiqued* every day. We just don't always get that feedback.
But if we aren't learning from what people see in our practice, then we miss the opportunity to improve.
That's why it's important to be evaluated consistently. Informally in addition to formally.
#satchat
Here’s the issue. My best staff struggle to accept the positive and hyper focus on the stuff they need to work on. How do we work to accept positive feedback? What I’m reflecting on #satchat
#SatChat A2 Evaluation keeps improvement at the forefront. Self evaluation should be happening every day to ensure that growth is constant. Outside evaluation from various sources brings a fresh perspective.
A2 When I teach I am acutely aware that I only have 2 eyes. Planning, S egagement, assessment filters through my eyes. Evaluation by peers opens my classroom to new perspectives, allows me to see things I may have missed, & invites conversation for my practice to evolve. #satchat
A2 Culture of the school should support admins, leaders, coaches, visitors, evaluators, (whoever!) to have consistent presence in classrooms, whether Ts are being evaluated or not. Opening doors does wonders for a school, even if it makes some uncomfortable. #satchat
A2: Just as coaches in sports give continuous feedback for players to improve, leaders need to provide feedback to support teacher and school growth. It is a constant cycle. Evaluation should be perceived as a positive way to grow, not a way to be judged #satchat
A2: evaluations require us to set goals and action plans. They offer opportunities for celebration, investigation, remediation, collaboration & reflection. They hold us accountable. #satchat
A2. Multiple methods: The most important consideration in teaching evaluation, both for improvement purposes and for personnel decisions, is the use of multiple methods of teaching evaluation involving multiple sources of data. This cannot occur after ONE observation. #satchat
#EDLR5308#UCPP20 This morning's chat is about Evaluating Educators - getting started a bit late, but will be worthwhile to go back through the chat later. #satchat
A2) Consistent feedback is valuable to any profession/career. Our teachers and students deserve continuous improvement - success is not linear #satchat
A1 Evaluation is an improvement and reflection process. It is a way for a leader to define expectations, and provide a pathway for meeting those expectations. #satchat
A2. It is important to have evaluations done consistently. One and done isn't a true picture. It is important to know what is happening and share the great work being done. #satchat
Unfortunately, I think you are right. I often wish administrators were trained on coaching skills more. Even though it's not their actual title, they really are the head coach. #satchat
A2. Consistency in the evaluation process allows for a more comprehensive picture of both teacher and student growth, but also signals significant instructional concerns in a time frame that limits the negative impact for learners. #education#leadership#satchat
A2. It's just like giving feedback to Ss. If it's not consistent, they don't know what they do well or where they need to improve. Consistent evals also help take the negativity away.Ts can respect the feedback given from an admin that knows them & their classroom #satchat
A2: Educators should be evaluated frequently because it helps with watching personal growth. Consistent feedback helps Ts grow and create goals to become the best they can be #satchat
A1: Evaluation should really be a meaningful opportunity for feedback with an administrator that you trust and respect. That’s when it becomes a conduit for appreciation, communication, and growth. #satchat
A2:It’s important to ensure our Ss get the best education possible, to avoid complacency, & to highlight great happenings in classrooms everywhere. #satchat
A2.1: too many goals (self-selected or mandated) means I make minimal progress on each. To maximize growth potential I need to commit to and focus on a couple of things #satchat
Agree. And it can’t be an admin flexing their muscles I am fortunate to work under admins who come in genuinely to be supportive not to play gotcha or show who is boss. I am never nervous when one walks in my classroom #satchat
One of the pillars of being a good educator is being a lifelong learner! This also means we constantly have to be learning how to better our craft! #satchat
In order to see the true workings of a classroom, observations MUST be consistent. It's more than the lessons....it is seeing & understanding structures, routines, and relationships to better support the Ts as they try to meet the needs of their Ss. #satchat
I’ll confess. I’m not a fan of changing words. I’d rather challenge assumptions people make about words. I know many who eye roll when we create euphemisms #satchat
A1. As a teaching assistant many years ago, there were anonymous surveys collected at the end of the semester. Nerve wracking to be sure, but surprisingly and unexpected kind words by students. Positive #satchat
A2.2 I also think evaluation is essential to get a baseline of where instruction is as a school/district. Like with teaching, by understanding where Ts are at, further training can be provided to improve instruction & reinforce the good things happening in the classroom. #satchat
A2. It is important because it allows for growth as an educator. We need to take the stigma out of evaluations and try to build a culture where evaluations are welcomed as a way to grow as professionals. Thinking of the growth mindset here. We can all improve. #satchat
AGREED! And this is not the norm, sadly. In my experience, in 6 different elementary schools, I found that to be true in only one. Recognition only happens with a confident and evolved administrator. Other issues get in the way when that is not so. #satchat
A2 It means that there are more opportunities for feedback/discussion of student learning. As a Principal, the more I am in a classroom and having conversations with teachers, the stronger we can all be as a school for our students. We should all want to model growth. #satchat
A2 I am going to change the word here b/c I do not feel educators should be "evaluated" on a consistent basis--but they should be part of a feedback cycle that focuses on a growth area that the educator had a role in choosing so he/she could grow capacity FOR students #satchat
A2) Tou don’t want complacency creeping in. Besides, having consistent feedback is something we would expect teachers to do with students, right? Admins should be modeling the same. It’s good practice #SatChat
I'm a huge believer in an evaluation cycle which I will not call a "growth cycle" (thank you @kwildehealey)
I believe in observation, conference, goal setting, modeling (if necessary), more observation....
#satchat
A2. There's many ways to evaluate...It needs to be consistent so that feedback is consistent...what am I doing well and what needs to improve or change #satchat
A2. Educators need consistent feedback just as students do. Unfortunately, formal evaluations are infrequent and less than authentic. This is why I work to make informal observations and feedback part of my daily practice. #satchat
A2: The needs within school communities are complex and constantly changing. We have to continuously think about the ways Ss learn best & how to grow professionally, which requires periodic assessments, reflections, conversations, and revamping of practices. #satchat
Relationships! The more they think you are really there to help them grow, not just get better test scores, it will happen. Maybe not for all of them, but we have to try. Have you read @TaraMartinEDU Be REAL #REALedu ? It's a great one for this! #satchat

A2) Consistent feedback is valuable to any profession/career. Our teachers and students deserve continuous improvement - success is not linear #satchat
To me I'd feel like it was a high-stakes euphemism. I say remove titles and collaborate. "How do you know if a teacher is good?"
Because you're in the classroom constantly. You have time bc you're not filling out 100's of eval forms on a state system that's bad:) #satchat
A2) Tou don’t want complacency creeping in. Besides, having consistent feedback is something we would expect teachers to do with students, right? Admins should be modeling the same. It’s good practice #SatChat
A2 Consistency is key. I always tell my students that I’m looking for what they do consistently. It should be the same for teachers. 45 minute visits in their classroom twice a year doesn’t allow for the needed reflection and feedback. #satchat
A2: Consistency in evaluation should yield consistency in results. Whatever goals are set will have valid and reliable results that help everyone purposefully achieve that goal. #satchat
A2. It is challenging to look at feedback. That said, consistent evaluation with the commitment to a larger goal of supporting our students helps educators stay on mission. #satchat
A2 Consistency of non-threatening evaluations can help build a culture of professionalism and trust. It's hard to build trust with evaluations that are rare or spaced too far apart. A continuum provides a fuller picture of a teacher's overall work with students. #satchat
A2) If we stay inside our own echo chambers, we may miss out on areas where we can improve. It is hard to spot our own deficiencies when we can't even recognize them. #Satchat
Agreed - teachers and students need to be comfortable with admin coming into classrooms / regular check-ins/ walkthroughs w/ feedback are important #satchat
People who want to improve are looking forward & avoid dwelling in the past, usually. When you expect a lot of yourself, it can be hard to slow down & enjoy the good things. #satchat
In reply to
@3_DLeadership, @specialtechie, @TheBradCurrie
Very true! Especially as the admin begin to feel that they know the teacher and how they work. They begin to just think everything is always ok. But, we still need feedback in order to grow! #satchat
I think for those staff maybe have a few "pop-in" observations that go well and where you focus on the positive. Then when you come in with how they can improve. It is all about building that relationship of mutual respect with the staff. #satchat
In reply to
@3_DLeadership, @specialtechie, @TheBradCurrie
Allowing professionals to name their own growth edges is essential in creating a positive professional growth model. Connecting Edus based on those goals can help with growth and colleagial observations. #satchat
A2 I am going to change the word here b/c I do not feel educators should be "evaluated" on a consistent basis--but they should be part of a feedback cycle that focuses on a growth area that the educator had a role in choosing so he/she could grow capacity FOR students #satchat
So true. I walked into a teachers classroom yesterday to tell her what a good job she has been doing, and she was shocked. More of that needs to happen.
A1) I know what we want evaluations to be, but at the heart of evaluations is #judgement against a systematic process, criteria, and evidence. #satchat
A3: Evaluations offer me the chance to reflect & refine my practice. It’s easy to move through a school year without stopping for reflection. Evaluation offers the opportunity to really think about how I can be better...and we can always be better! #satchat
Not everyone is open to feedback. #Satchat I've seen the kindest of conversations get twisted based on how the listener interprets their role in a situation. Blaming others over and over instead of looking inside to see what could be happening.
A1: Evaluation for me means to seek understanding to support decisions about what to do next--understand effectiveness of program, strategy, lesson, intervention, teaching, student learning, coaching, and then make decsions about next steps. #satchat
A2: I don't think it is important to eval constantly in the sense we doing it now. Eval is internal & continual. Ex: I gave kids all 100 for a quarter unit. Was present, we all shared info, gave feedback. It had value. They worked 3x as hard. #satchat
I don’t disagree with your assessment. For me, I’m all about teaching through cognitive dissonance - sometimes using words with negative connotations causes that #satchat
I want my admins in my room frequently. I invite them in. I get that they don't have time. But the invitation is there and repeated.
I *want* them to see where I am coming up short NOW so I can adjust to a better habit/ method/ practice.
#satchat
A2 Personally, I invite admin into my classroom all of the time for 3 reasons. To receive feedback from them, they can normally fit it into their schedule, and I get an extra set of hands to help the students. #satchat
a3: If am evaluation is really constructive & sets a goal for improving practice- it should help me as an educator improve my instruction, as well as focus my accountability & my intentionality in the classroom #satchat
A2: Jim from NJ. Educators need both consistency from the same evaluator and consistency from the multiple evaluators -- inter-rater reliability is important. Minimize confusion. Maximiize growth. #satchat
A2 #satchat I once worked with a #literacy coach, who, I kid you not, could not spell properly or use correct punctuation. Someone missed something along the way there. Her talents could have been improved with some gentle, but meaningful feedback.
It's important for us to know how well our message is being reserved. Another set of eyes can give us a new perspective on how to improve our craft. #satchat
A2. Back in high school, when administrators would sit in the back of class, I noticed that teachers changed the way they taught the day's class - often seemingly "formal" and less themselves. #satchat
It is important to establish a culture where evaluations are not finite. It is important to have evaluations as a means to improve and continue the great things going on in our schools. #SatChat
A3: The IDEA of evaluation is something I constantly feed into my practice. Evaluate, reflect, repeat. However in our #education culture, evaluation is seen as diminutive to many & that mindset needs shifted from ALL parties involved for #evaluation & #reflection success #satchat
A3: Evaluations help me to see what I should continue doing and ways I can improve. It helps me continue to be a life-long learner by finding areas where I can grow and then working to become better for my students! Love promoting the lifelong learner mentality! #satchat
Formal observations always seem to be more about checking boxes than helping me be a better teacher. We need more of a coaching mentality and less evaluating mentality. #satchat
A3: I absolutely do not "mean" to sound cynical. 🤪Just pointing out my observations to help the conversation. So, I have learned more about the evaluator and the system than myself. I have my admin license but teach. I know what I would do. Build people up. Inspire. #satchat
A1 Formal evaluation is one thing, but even more important to me was the informal "evaluation" I experienced every day by the students before me. They taught me to gauge engagement level in real-time, pivot accordingly, & even revise the direction of lessons in progress. #satchat
#satchat A3: I always took an eval seriously to get an outside perspective ... as a way to show my principal what I did & receive feedback ... hated that it was isolated to 1 or 2 days.
A3 I like self reflection and so I often asked my students, usually 2 times a year, to give me feedback in a lengthy formal evaluation. I seek to change and evaluate my practice often to better my approach. #satchat
Part of why they have been important in my development is the same reason a lot of people are upset by it; I NEED TO KNOW WHAT AN OUTSIDER THINKS. sometimes I believe I’m clear but if it doesn’t get through to Ss they aren’t going to tell me as clearly as an admin! #satchat
#satchat
A2: Consistency : using the same rubric and requirements communicates the standards to teachers so they are better prepared to participate in the process.
A2: Evaluations give us the opportunity to identify our strengths, and areas in which we need to grow. If we see them as opportunites to improve, they become the catalysis for growth #satchat
Ummm... growth or decay.
I'm doing one or the other.
If it's feedback from my Ss, #edadmins, coteachers, or an aide , if they want to see me grow, I *WANT* their input.
#satchat
A2 IMO a feedback cycle is key for us all - but there are some keys that make it meaningful - feedback must be 1) timely, 2) focused on an agreed upon area that’s valued and efficacy focused, 3) specific 4) a dialogue vs monologue 5)mutually owned #SatChat
Just as PBL personalizes students' learning, I would love an evaluation process in which I set a goal & works w/ colleagues & evaluator to devise a personalized learning plan that I implement during PD & other time rather than mandated goals & one-size fits all PD #satchat
A3: I truly appreciate the feedback that my evaluators have given me over the years as a teacher and now as an administrator. I now have a better understanding of what I need to improve upon and the great work I am appreciated for #Satchat
A3 Evaluations help me pinpoint specifically what I can do better and then I can create an action plan how I’m going to achieve my goals. #satchat@TheBradCurrie@wkrakower@ScottRRocco
A3: As a principal, I get observed, and I meet with my administrators. I look at those times to discuss what’s going well, what I need help with, and it’s an opportunity to get feedback for me which I wish I had more of #satchat
A3: Evaluations, when done well, are a catalyst for growth. Evaluations can and should be focused on areas of strength as well as areas of growth. Each area can improve, but the trap is to only focus on weakness. #satchat
A3. As a consultant, my role in evaluating teachers is mostly auxiliary- both an advantage and disadvantage. I represent an unbiased lens, but rarely have the benefit of mutual trust and relationship building, which are critical to an effective evaluation process. #satchat

I don't believe in an eval cycle anymore UNLESS it's 360. I was teaching my evaluators things but the fear went top down. We all have diff roles. In biz/other world, we have teams and collab. We all pick up a shovel and work together. And the results lift us all:) #satchat
A3 My evals need to give me targeted and useful feedback (good and hard to hear) so I can improve my craft and serve all of my students' needs. I need to do all I can to help them find success and to increase student achievement. I can't do that w/o useful eval. #satchat
Just as PBL personalizes students' learning, I would love an evaluation process in which I set a goal & work w/ colleagues & evaluator to devise a personalized learning plan that I implement during PD & other time rather than mandated goals & one-size fits all PD #satchat
#satchat A2a It has to do with zombies.. https://t.co/2u8pH1WNR9 .. evaluation of educators needs to fairly determine how one’s practice improves over time. Ideally it occurs in tandem with others as @DonWettrick writes about collaborating towards a goal..
A2 Admins must MAKE TIME! Being in classrooms - all of the time - should be their #1 priority. Helps build relationships with students and teachers; fosters respect and the understanding that “I’m present and I care all of the time, not just some of the time.” #satchat
A3: Evaluations should be coaching sessions that help us make a “game plan” for how to best use our skills to engage students in productive learning #satchat
A3: I don't mean this to play down evaluations, they are important. But nothing drives me to improve more than the steadfast calling I have to do what's right for students. #satchat
A3. Evals help me see what outsiders see. I may think I am doing good but having someone observing can give me insight on how I look, sound, etc. to others. And sometimes we may think we are doing a horrible job but others see instructional wins we don't. #satchat
The need for evaluations in your building is directly tied to your success in hiring. Spend the appropriate amount of time doing the work when you decide on candidates will pay off in the amount of time needed to help a teacher grow. #satchat
A3: If accepted as a helpful tool to grow, it should be your way to plan next steps. What to continue, what to change, how can you step it up a notch? #satchat
When we use evaluations we try to remove all objectivity from the situation. Perception of both parties ultimately determines if this truly happens. #satchat
A2: Evaluations give us the opportunity to identify our strengths, and areas in which we need to grow. If we see them as opportunites to improve, they become the catalysts for growth #satchat
A3. It’s important to view it as feedback you can use for growth. The most powerful evaluations come from students. I try to visit with our students frequently about our school and myself (what is working and ways to improve). We use student panels with staff as well. #satchat
#SATChat A3 Evaluation is about growth. Identifying areas that I am doing well (and applauding those) and also identifying areas that I can grow in as a teacher and connecting teachers to resources to support that growth
A3 I really don't stress over it. What they see is what I attempt to do every day. I'm hard on myself every day to be on my A game with the students. #satchat
A2. Educators need consistent feedback just as students do. Unfortunately, formal evaluations are infrequent and less than authentic. This is why I work to make informal observations and feedback part of my daily practice. #satchat
A3. In my case, there is rarely substantive discussion that occurs either before or after an observation that is focused on ways to get better at teaching. In most cases, evaluations are conducted for compliance, not improvement. #satchat
Great eds are highly reflective and likely our own worst critics. We need our evaluations to be a time to be celebrated, shown appreciation, and empowered. If not, they break us down. #satchat
Inviting admins in when you have something especially exciting planned for class also gives admins the opportunity to see how you're doing in a variety of situations. I used to invite them in for activities such as mock trials or debates. #satchat
I agree. And I think there can also be the fact that we are proud of what we are doing in the classroom. That’s why we welcome the critiques to grow and why sometimes the admin’s response is just going to be “well done” and that’s great to hear too #satchat
A2 I agree Daniel. If we want to grow as educators and learners we need feedback on how to become a better version of ourselves. Teacher/leader as a reflective learner concept #satchat
A3) Evaluations play a key role in my evolution. Being in the classroom constantly re-energizes me & witnessing teachers fulfill their why while helping students be their best never gets old #satchat
Teacher evaluation in my early career was very much a “dog and pony show”. I would have an appointment, and I would plan my best lesson, wear my best outfit, and perform for my evaluation. Now my admins come through often & see my actual practice #satchat
Which I agree with. But our everyday language is also important - the right word choice is about growth mindset & empowering ourselves and others.
#satchat
#satchat A3 It has always been an opportunity to relect and grow. All stakeholders contribute. Must be willing to listen and adjust based on feedback. It is a vulnerable and courageous process, albeit a necessary one.
A1 It means receiving timely, meaningful & constructive feedback. Remember the positive. These are the same things we use to evaluate Ss. Impt to remember that observations or assessments are snapshots of a moment in time. To be effective, evaluations must be ongoing. #satchat
Thank you @USATODAY for publishing the FULL quote & context of what I said.
We are all holding to see if @ChelseaClinton will apologize for perpetuating this leftist media hoax.
Similar to #Covington, this hoax has resulted in death threats against me.

#satchat
A3. Current process as applied is not focused enough on development or growth. Components are there, but emphasis is on the observations. If we want teachers to grow and learn, we need to value the process they use to do so - cyclical process.
Until it’s time for spring layoffs based on evaluations. MI under DeVos influence no longer uses seniority. There is nothing warm and positive about “evaluations” any more. Let’s be honest. #satchat
In reply to
@DennisDill, @CoachKCullen, @HERprincipal
A3. Just bc we get feedback doesn't mean we "do as told." We are still responsible for reflecting on the feedback.
Can I do it?
How do I do it?
Should I do it?
What's the impact?
#satchat
A3: I have learned people around me know things about me that I don’t know about myself. As I engage with feedback, I expand my consciousness of myself, which helps me change the world! Social Change Model #satchat
A3. In my case, the evaluation systems operates with the intention of holding Ts to account rather than improvement. This is dangerous as it can (un)intentionally create a climate of fear & resistance!! #satchat
With time constraints and stringent evaluation timelines, this is a reality. It is up to the administrator to create a process that beat serves the teacher; the Teacher-administrator relationship makes the process authentic and not systematic #satchat
A3: I absolutely do not "mean" to sound cynical. 🤪Just pointing out my observations to help the conversation. So, I have learned more about the evaluator and the system than myself. I have my admin license but teach. I know what I would do. Build people up. Inspire. #satchat
A3 Evaluations should make all of us better - T, admin, student, and practice. If no change, adding something new, or self-reflection occurs, then the point of the evaluation model has been lost. More eyes = more perspectives. #satchat
A2: I think for the entire spectrum of teacher styles and practice, from a new teacher to a veteran, frequent observation and reflection with admin can be valuable. I want them to see what’s going on in my room, I want them to see me. To be a team. #satchat
One way we can seek improvement at the classroom, school, and district levels is through site visits. Check out the School Visitation Network: https://t.co/HEPEbg0wut#Satchat
A1 Eval is such a charged word for adults and children / often had become linked to a group of words from inspected to tested to measured to failed - and when it is comes from an external controller who delivers it, it puts people on the defensive — #satchat
A3: Evaluations push me to grow and challenge the status quo but they also validate the great things we do together as a staff. I look at every evaluation as a teacher and admin as an opportunity to pursue excellence. #satchat
A2 I am going to change the word here b/c I do not feel educators should be "evaluated" on a consistent basis--but they should be part of a feedback cycle that focuses on a growth area that the educator had a role in choosing so he/she could grow capacity FOR students #satchat
A2: Consistent teacher evaluation supports culture of learning and growth....I like to think of consistent evaluation as coaching--working together to set goals that build on strengths and support areas of weakness. TRUST essential! #satchat
A3: The narrative parts of my evals have been tremendously useful; I enjoy them, and learn (even when painful). The numerical parts? Not so much.
#satchat
#SATChat Tcher Eval is not about what you can find on TPT & putting on a show. It needs to be what happens in the clsrm everyday. Its about meeting the stdts needs and moving them forward in their learning. #Honest#Open#Communication#IdentifyingNeeds
Agreed. I think though I work to engage folx assumptions. Sometimes using a word the way it is literally meant and engaging on the feelings folx attach with the word provides rich conversations #satchat
"To hell with your phony civility.
You lost that moral high ground somewhere between excusing his mocking of a disabled reporter, his celebrating kids in cages, and his ridiculing of a sexual assault survivor."

A3. It allows me the opportunity to reflect and grow as a professional. The formal evaluation is important but I find the feedback I receive after decisions I have made the most important. #satchat
A3: Continual growth is the key to school improvement. As an educator, I need and enjoy being challenged to grow. Supportive admin who value relationships are able to inspire continuous improvement to overcome the status quo... Children deserve it! #satchat
Jacquelin, there are still those who like the dog and pony shows but when I was evaluating others, I liked seeing the everyday lessons that connect Ts to their Ss & watch how Ss respond. #satchat
A3: The forms (now google forms) I give students to eval me is what I use to measure effectiveness. They're my customers. Kids come back all the time and say "I use what you taught me *for real.* Their long-term and immediate feedback shapes what I do. #satchat
For admins, there has to be an understanding as well that when a teacher is challenging an evaluation, it’s not personal. A teacher takes pride in what they do, took the time to consider your critique, & is in disagreement. The discussion could be growth for both of you #satchat
A3- Evaluations offer me areas of focus in my own growth. I look for trends in feedback year after year to see if I am missing something. I appreciate that the feedback I receive is realistic and pertains directly to the role I’m in. Otherwise, what’s the point? #satchat
A3 Feedback from an external source helps me improve my leadership and teaching skills. I seek advice often on how to address situations that I've not encountered before. This helps me think them through and make informed decisions (rushing to judgment is often harmful). #satchat
A4: Evaluations need to be more formative, providing educators with an opportunity to show how they used the feedback provided. If they use the feedback and improve, their "score" should reflect it, just like we expect for student learning. #SatChat
A4: I would like to see more peer observation opportunities for teachers who are consistently rated effective and highly effective. We are professional educators and those who demonstrate this effectiveness can then focus on specific areas they want to improve on.
#satchat
#SatChat A3
At first (19 yrs ago) they gave me a false sense that I was better than I was. As I grew as a T, I learned that it depended on who was providing the evaluation as to how I would use it to improve my craft as a T. My own evaluations/reflections combined w/S 1 of ?
#satchat A3a I think it’s important to reflect on the idea that most everyone evaluates or gets evaluated. Against n, back to the zombie analogy. We want the best life. The way forward is progress towards a goal. Choose the metric and the period n go for it.
#satchat A4 I always asked my principal if he'd come in more often rather than just once/twice a year ... hated the feeling of having to "put on a show" for 1 period
Reflection is key!! If you don’t reflect on the conversation and determine how to apply what elements can improve your practice then the evaluation is worthless #satchat
A3) Always good to have a different set of eyes see what you’re doing. It helps my evolution because it lets me know where I’m doing great, and what I can be better at. I also helps me to set my goals to personal development #growthmindset#SatChat
A3. In my case, evaluations are not used to target the needs of individual Ts & help them select PD to address those areas in which they need additional knowledge or skills. #satchat
A1: Evaluation means I get to hear from someone else what they think about what we’re doing in my class. Kids, admins, other teachers? Yes! Help me evaluate, give me something more to reflect upon. Let’s make it better together. #satchat
With time constraints and stringent evaluation timelines, this is a reality. It is up to the administrator to create a process that best serves the teacher; the Teacher-administrator relationship makes the process authentic and not systematic #satchat
#satchat maybe less focus on "score" rather than a growth factor of some kind (guess that kind of is a score, huh?) we want growth from our kiddos, why not educators?
#satchat Maybe a better way to provide feedback is through increased collaboration -- at least on admin level. Being ok with working side by side and/or asking for help. We can learn from each other and should. No one person makes the team. The group makes a team.
A3: Feedback & perspective. If the goal of evaluation is growth, evaluator will say things with fresh eyes & different POV. Many things - good & not-as-good - will be pointed out. I want (eval) to be new marching orders. #satchat
A4 We can begin by increasing the voice of those who are begin evaluated in the actual evaluation process. How can we make room for truly collaborative opportunities to accelerate teacher growth and celebrate instructional success?#satchat#leadership#teachers#education
A4 Administrators need to be in classrooms more often when the students are there to see learning in action. Being in classrooms daily should be a priority for administrators. #satchat#PrincipalsInAction#RedefineTheRole
A4: Drop the numerical piece, especially the parts tied to "standardized" assessments, a punitive measure of the SES of your students.
Numbers are great places to hide biases.
#satchat
A3: If the evolution of the educator should be the evolution of a lifelong learner, and to inspire the lifelong learner in us, the evaluator needs to treat the evaluation as a lifelong learning process. (did I say lifelong learner too many times?) #satchat
A4: Just like grades for our students, scoring on evaluations can’t be the only focus. We want students to read our comments, so we, too, should value the feedback above any score. #satchat
A3: Evaluations help me see where I can improve my professional practice to best meet the needs of my Ss. Also, evals can provide additional strategies & ideas to bring into the classroom. I request evals from admin & Ss #satchat
Absolutely true.
This job requires an enormous amount of humility. Not everyone is as open as necessary to feedback that will help them improve.
What may delivered as "professional' is too often taken as 'personal.'
#satchat
A4: So far evaluations seem to be emphasizing the observation of a lesson without considering the personal learning, colleague collaboration, curriculum planning, and empathy w/ students that precede the lesson... how can the whole process be considered? #satchat
A3) If an evaluation is conducted correctly then the evaluator should be evaluating the teacher on what they need to improve as well as what they have been doing well. #satchat
A3: Evaluations play a role in my evolution as a T by they help me reflect on how I can hone my craft. I am already very reflective and I am ofte harder on myself for my failures then any evaluation from someone else. It is all about are you ready to change or not. #satchat
As a teacher it shifted my instruction from teacher centered to student driven. As an administrator, I have learned that a quality evaluation tool is an opportunity to discuss professional learning. #satchat
A4: I think there are too many standards most frameworks and leaders aren't clear enough to Ts with what they want to see. Read Schmoker's Leading with Focus for more on this! #satchat
A3: The forms (now google forms) I give students to eval me is what I use to measure effectiveness. They're my customers. Kids come back all the time and say "I use what you taught me *for real.* Their long-term and immediate feedback shapes what I do. #satchat
I really would love to have more frequent informal observations. As a first year teacher, this would help to get other's input while I work towards goals I made in my formal observations. Feedback is what helps me grow as an educator. #satchat
A4: TRUTH: Removal of a Tiered Salary based on evaluations. #Idaho legislature is in session now. A Career Ladder is real and ONE principal can change a teacher's earning potential. Yes what options to teacher's have? So upsetting to me.https://t.co/9Fv36Akk9i#satchat
A4: Admin need to spend more time in classrooms and PLCs. They need to be a part of the instructional planning and coaching so Ts can find meaning in their feedback. If you haven't been facilitating my learning all along, I don't want you evaluating me at the end. #satchat
A3. Reflective dialogue serves to cause perspective making, recognition of successes and how to push into new challenges while receiving coaching from experienced leaders. #satchat
A3. My teacher evals & the evals I was required to do set my path in education on an alternate course. They were tedious, overwhelming or sometimes pointless. #satchat
#SatChat A3 continued
My evaluation plus S feedback provided the best chance for personal growth. A couple of APs have provided excellent feedback from observations that have truly helped me grow. Most have been OK & helped my continued growth some. 2 were terrible & ignored.
#SatChat A3
At first (19 yrs ago) they gave me a false sense that I was better than I was. As I grew as a T, I learned that it depended on who was providing the evaluation as to how I would use it to improve my craft as a T. My own evaluations/reflections combined w/S 1 of ?
A2 Things constantly change. It's important to celebrate successes, but also work on necessary improvements. Evaluators must help Ts be aware of changes & provide support to meet changing needs. You never finish being a learner. Without feedback, how can one improve? #satchat
A3: As I've gotten older, I realize that it is a combination of feedback that has made me better. Evaluations cannot be one dimensional and feedback from administrators, colleagues, students and community that have made me a better educator/leader. #satchat
A3 I was the victim of truly terrible evaluations when I started teaching. But this had a positive impact. Now that I'm in admin, I try to reflect on what was wrong with these & find better ways to work. We learn from both the good & the bad.
#satchat
#SATChat A4 A key component of Evaluation is self reflection. How do I think I'm doing (What's going well? What needs some work?) and what evidence supports that. #SelfReflection
A4. Would love to have more team evaluation. One teacher teachers and the other members of the team provide feedback to make it better. Very powerful!! #satchat
Consistent evaluation helps an educator see what they don’t see. We are reflective by nature, but sometimes we need our blind spots highlighted. Hearing the perspective of another seasoned educator helps me be more thoughtful and stronger for my kids. #satchat
Maybe by simply shifting the conversation? Why don't we give Ts the opportunity to speak first & express thoughts, ideas, & Q's before looking at evaluation rubric & feeling the need to 'defend' themselves #satchat
At my first teaching position, my principal was always popping in for a few minutes and then would leave a brief note in my mailbox (before email, I’m old). That brought me through the trials of my first yrs teaching than any formal evaluation. #satchat
I am proud of my daily instruction & it makes the info more student focused. Instead of “great lesson” - I get something more specific, & they talk to Ss about the objective, the purpose, and they tailor their feedback to something you can work on. Actually valuable #satchat
A4: A self evaluation should precede the formal observation and the two can be considered together for perhaps an added evaluation component that give Ts voice #satchat
A4. Many systems assume that providing Ts with ratings & feedback on their performance will drive widespread, sustained improvement in instructional practices & S learning. This assumption is wrong. #satchat
A3: if evaluations are done correctly, the Ts should feel supported through the feedback and left whole. Feedback given correctly will help educators grow. #SatChat
I'm a new coach and I'm trying to really get my coaching stems down so I focus on celebrations and use them to guide T's to come up with their own next steps instead of being told what to change. It's not easy. #satchat Luckily, mine is not evaluative, just feedback.
#satchat
A4: 10-15 min. more frequent observations, followed by timely feedback for teacher growth - which ultimately results in an increase in Ss achievement. Important if we really want ongoing professional learning and a cycle of cont. improvement
A4) I would like to see teachers be more involved in the their evaluation process. Potentially videotaping lessons & going through the evolution rubric in collaboration with the admin - multiple perspectives & dialogue regarding their performances #satchat
A4: Just like student evaluations, instead of one or two evaluation points, more frequent, shorter evaluations might be more effective and useful. More longitudinal data to look at. More frequent conversation about teaching and learning. #satchat
A3: Educators beat themselves up for things that I see as strength. It’s important to point those things out frequently through feedback. Feedback should help teachers think about where we are now and where we can be. Always moving forward not dwelling in the ick. #satchat
A4 Evaluations should include a component where your students can provide feedback on how you’re doing as their teacher. The kids are, after all, the ones who are impacted by what and how you’re doing. #satchat@TheBradCurrie@ScottRRocco@wkrakower
A4. An effective T evaluator should be able to see how Ss are learning & not just look at what the T is doing. Is it an active & fun learning atmosphere? How do Ss react? Ideally, conduct formal & informal observations to assess if the T is S-centered in teaching. #satchat
A4 The culture of a building should change to make edu evaluations more meaningful. Build trust, encourage open dialogue that will encourage reflection and student-centered thinking. #satchat
A4: #satchat To make evals more meaningful, I have noticed districts going from "evaluations" to "observations", calling them "coaching opportunities". The problem I see with this is that it takes a VERY strong culture to make this switch.
A4: when I evaluate, I usually ask staff to self evaluate first. That helps me know the gap between what they already know and what I need them to know #satchat
A4. Education needs to use more frequent feedback that is focused on maximizing strengths and providing specific steps to improve. Focus should be on growth. As an admin- my most important job is getting into classrooms to support teachers which in turn support kids. #SatChat
A4. In order to improve the evaluation process, I think it is important to involve those being evaluated in the conversation. What would they like to see? Perhaps each evaluation is different when we approach it that way. Ultimately asking “where do you wish to grow?” #satchat
Consistent evaluation helps an educator see what they don’t see. We are reflective by nature, but sometimes we need our blind spots highlighted. Hearing the perspective of another seasoned educator helps me be more thoughtful and stronger for my kids. #satchat
A4) Not focus on a number!! The conversation is the key. It’s too bad we’ve gone away from the narrative to checking boxes ang deriving at a number. I always try to steer clear of talking about the number, but some teachers & admins now see that as their measure #satchat
Teachers should be more involved in the process. Still feels too much like a punitive measure to identify ineffective teaching as opposed to a tool to promote professional growth and build teacher efficacy. #satchat
Evaluations need to allow for educators to take risks that may not pan out; yet not be penalized. A formative system that allows for timely targeted feedback with milestone dates for a re-eval will go a long way to increasing innovation in CRs. Assign "values" at EOY. #satchat
A4 This depends on school culture and context. We've reached a good point in our eval process. Used to be major eval every 2-5 years w/ a 3-inch (!) binder of work documented. Shift to informal walkthroughs regularly with one formal evaluation per year has been better! #satchat
Absolutely! My evaluator is always positive & asks our team questions that provide a great foundation for reflecting. It has a collaborative feeling, which is how is must be in order to be at all effective. #satchat
A2 if feedback isn’t a part of my formative daily life, I may misinterpret what I think I understand about my work / one of the best Ts I ever knew asked elem children every day 4 feedback & they evaluated activities they did - kids started asking each other for feedback #satchat
A few coaches & I created a #googleslides version or our rubric for T's to use as a self-evaluation tool. Our hope is for T's to use it to focus on areas they want to improve on their own. #satchat
A4: First, the perception that evaluation is a judgement. Second, more frequent drop ins along with school wide learning walks to help create a culture of continuous growth. Ts should feel that we are all in this together...constantly growing to improve Ss learning #satchat
The evaluation system alone will not do this. A comprehensive look at teaching in your organization allows purposeful feedback, support and #PD. #satChat
#SatChat A4a At #cuelapalooza I learned about #playztag. And it really wasn’t until later that it occurred to me there are other ways to play it. Given evaluative feedback we our practice evolves. But it can impact others, too. No T is an island..
A4. It begins whether or not educators are interested in improvement and best practices. I imagine this is sans this group of highly evolved educators #satchat
A3: They made me realize some truths about myself. These insights didn’t come from the administrator, but from the process and my own reflection. Ultimately that information guides me and informs my path, and that’s exactly the value assessment can hold for students.#satchat
#satchat "Republican leadership today is not against the way we have done the job. The Republican leadership is against the job’s being done" FDR 1936 https://t.co/q6uURgq8uB
My observations about self Evals; the best staff evaluate themselves harsher than I would. The ones who struggle tend to over estimate their strengths #satchat
Yes, same Pam, as a coach I provide non-evaluative feedback that is intended to help teachers grow, and ultimately produce terrific learning as well as great evaluations! #satchat
In reply to
@specialtechie, @snydesn2, @kwildehealey
A3: when evaluation systems are coordinated at every level it shows connection to the overall vision - I suggest to #superintendents all the time that even building walk through share a rubric or a basis for observations/conversations - we have to have a shared lens #satchat
A4: Evaluate sounds negative & punitive. Coach sounds postive & in line with goal of T & S growth and learning. Regular quick 20 minute sessions to see variety lessons and lesson components. Also quick walk through observations with checklists. Trust/Feedback/Goals #satchat
What if new teacher onboarding included multiple colleagues discussing their reflective and evaluative process, then new T's can have more insight into and agency in developing their goals with both a mentor and an evaluator #satchat
A4. I'd be interested in more student feedback...I've watched when Ss were asked what are you doing and why...If they couldn't articulate that...I needed to re-adjust quickly #satchat
A2 I find that consistent evaluation is important in order to let Ts know what they're strengths are. Most of my Ts are sooooo hard on themselves. Seeing their work through my eyes, allows them focus on the positive.
#satchat
Timely feedback is crucial and it models expectations for Teacher to student feedback timelines. My goal is the same day or by the next morning. #Satchat
#satchat
A4: 10-15 min. more frequent observations, followed by timely feedback for teacher growth - which ultimately results in an increase in Ss achievement. Important if we really want ongoing professional learning and a cycle of cont. improvement
A5: Non-teaching staff are evaluated with individual forms & rubrics based on job description. This way, everyone gets some sort of feedback during the school year. #satchat
A4: What I think needs to change about T evaluations is that they need to focus more on how much the Ss grow and not if they Pass/Fail a State Assessment. While the state assessments are needed they aren't the all be all. Teaching is about helping Ss to grow. #satchat
A4: #satchat Another change would be that admin might need to "look up" a bit more often. As educators, we like to stick to a protocol, "the list", so to speak. Good things are happening outside of the list...sometimes even better than what's on the list in the first place.
A3: I constantly evaluated myself - each lesson, question, response, strategy, assessment type, etc. This self evaluation drives me to create, innovate, improve, redesign, as well as celebrate & continue implementing the successes #satchat
A5 We have begun more formal evaluations of our instructional assistants who support our special education students. As principal, I meet with assistant and special education teacher. Powerful conversations for these vital educators. #satchat
I think the eval system needs to have specific departmental and cultural metrics at its core. We need to know what “success” means. Sometimes we have different definitions, and that is what causes a poor eval process #satchat
A4. Working with high school teachers in Taipei several years ago, we saw that as "bureaucrats" in a government system - after the first few years there was little interest in improving. There were highlights throughout, but generally disappointing really. #satchat
Q4: To make eval effective:
1. Formative, not high stakes. If it's high stakes, people lie, duck, cover.
2. Highlight positives at all levels, from lunch staff to principal.
3. Be present regularly, not just for eval.
4. Make it fun. (continued) #satchat
A4. Individualizing teaching evaluation: Effective teaching evaluation must be individualized. A uniform system discriminates against some individuals, so a plan sensitive to individual variation should be developed e.g., grade level, subject/discipline, class dynamics. #satchat
A3: that outside perspective is helpful, but so is the inside one. Ask your Ss how you’re doing. What they thought of that lesson, activity, unit, project. What went well, what could have been better, how would you do it next time? They’ve got GREAT ideas for YOUR class. #satchat
SelfEval—>dynamic driver of change. Admin role= provide assessment tools + create culture(acceptance of current skills + excitement to innovate) + (recognition+ support)(process + growth). How would you change/manipulate this formula? #satchat#edleadership
A5: I don't know if this is good or bad. But I have NO IDEA! Honestly. I am not sure and I have been there since 1993. Wait, what?! (I'm asking myself! 🙄🤔) #satchat
We put more faith in data collected through testing than from the person sitting in the room with the kids everyday. “That kid doesn’t have a reading problem, they have a testing problem” as they sit in intensive reading and were told to help them understand how to test #satchat
Completely agree. Getting in classrooms without a computer or paper and pencil in hand allows us to see teaching over time as opposed to in the moment. #Satchat
A4: How about when selecting random students we ask them to do a mini self assessment of their growth since the beginning of school. We can also ask about some of their projects or lessons from that class. #satchat#allaboutthestudents
A4 I like to have a more discernible circus for evaluations to increase effectiveness. 1 district vision goals and one teacher self reflective growth goal. This gives me and the teacher buy in for evaluation. #satchat
I've had to do the binder thing. It was awful & super stressful. No evals all year & then have 20 minutes to prove you are an "effective" Teacher. I always felt that even though I put so much into it, there was never enough time to truly show what I do #satchat
A4. That said, it's challenging for educators to be evaluated without general community and society support for overall improvement. Too often it is an adversarial environment, rather than cooperative. #satchat
A4) I would like to see teachers be more involved in the their evaluation process. Potentially videotaping lessons & going through the evolution rubric in collaboration with the admin - multiple perspectives & dialogue regarding their performances #satchat
A4: Evals: More language pertaining to equity, inclusion, and identity safety. If students do not feel safe to be their authentic selves, it’s difficult for them to learn. Inward reflection of these critical concepts are powerful. #satchat
I think every teacher is hypercritical of themselves. Collectively, we have to do a better job of celebrating each other, but also celebrating ourselves. #satchat
A4: Evaluations should consider multiple sources as well as self-reflection. It should be more of a "story" than an end product. There needs to be a way of separating growth versus employment. It is unfortunate that many of the growth rubrics are tied to a score. #satchat
A4: IMO, I believe we have to remove the connection of teacher evaluation to student performance on standardized test scores. There are many inconsistencies and double-talk in education and this is a huge one. #satchat
Time to recoup from jet lag + trauma of travel, time to adjust to new environment (people, weather, physical environment)...surely this takes more than 10 days. #melati#LondonZoo#satchat#tigers
An endangered Sumatran tiger is mauled to death at London Zoo, just moments after being introduced to a potential mate for the first time. https://t.co/mmDFMcGccQ
Ideally, mentors facilitate this. However, I think you are 100% on the mark. It really should be multiple colleagues developing the reflective and *receptive* practice of evaluations.
#satchat
A4 #satchat
Ts need to reflect on comments/feedback
Also, dialogue is needed between T & AP/P. Entire conversation does not need to be written. Then T needs to reflect & use the feedback to attempt to improve craft.
Biggest impact was my own reflections & desire to improve
A4. Teacher evaluations need to be an ongoing discussion, not a one-time event. With frequent feedback, you establish trust. That trust is necessary when you have to have courageous conversations about improvement! #satchat
A4: How about when selecting random students, we ask them to do a mini self assessment of their growth since the beginning of school year. We can also ask about some of their projects or lessons from that class. #satchat#allaboutthestudents
Yes! Not even to just evaluate the teacher, but to get an idea of what big picture things need to change in a classroom env't. Sometimes the culture needs a boost even in a well run classroom. Student centered convos are often easier to accept too. #satchat
I find it challenging to transition from evaluation to coaching when we reduce educators to a number. I grew the most from direct feedback & coaching; not from a summative evaluation that came with a number; I am more than a number! #satchat#HackingLeadership
2/
5. Look at what successful induction programs do outside edu. Do that.
6. Make it 360. Students/Teachers/management.
These things will make eval relevant, positive. Right now we've got Danielson's boxes and spreadsheets that don't do much. Even she agrees. #satchat
Completely agree, Dennis. We've done away with testing for the past 20 years. We trust our Ts judgement & our kids are doing great! The lack of testing hasn't hurt them - I'd say we just have more time to teach.
#satchat
A5: districts don’t think of it as evaluation but “performance review” - it makes me crazy that kids and teachers and building leaders are often the only ones that get evaluated! Even #schoolboards should hear what they are rocking at and what they could give effort to #satchat
That’s ONE important way. I wouldn’t say it’s the best. The teacher the students most “like” may not be the one where the most learning is taking place. #satchat
The feedback is great because it gives you another way of looking at something, or another way to possibly approach something. It's not the be-all, end-all answer. It should make you "think", not just "do". Tweak it to find the way that fits "you". *hey! I rhymed! ELA!* #satchat
A5 some have evaluation rubrics in our computerized evaluation system, and some ESPs have a more traditional (old fashioned) narrative evaluation. #satchat
#satchat A4 Effective evaluations focus on growth. What went well; what could be improved? I have worked with administrators who were excellent, and, in turn, they continued to excel and grow professionally. I have also worked with poor evaluators who struggled professionally.
In post-obs I've found that most of what I beat myself up over requires only a small tweak. But I can't always see that. I *need* someone on the outside catching it and showing it to me.
#satchat
Agreed. When evaluation is just about the lesson, so many opportunities for important growth are missed along the way. Reflective teams are so important! #satchat
A5: Right now my district is looking for feedback on how to evaluate non-certified staff to improve the way the entire school reflects. Appropriate, job-specific feedback is key to reflection & improvement of ALL #satchat#LTPS
SAOs ... all teachers and staff who work in a non-tested subject use an SAO ... where we create an objective that can be measured with our learners (students or other adults) throughout the year we measure growth ... #satchat
I Always have T’s pick a personal to have them focus on improving themselves during the year! I really love to hear how they’ve done and how they feel@about themselves after the process #SATChat
A4: Evals: More language pertaining to equity, inclusion, and identity safety. If students do not feel safe to be their authentic selves, it’s difficult for them to learn. Inward reflection of these critical concepts is powerful. #satchat
A5: All of our educators teach at some point—counselors lead students through career explo, librarians teach green screen and database research. Evals are maybe less organic since they’re planned, but they’re still telling. #satchat
A5. We use rubrics as consistent means to evaluate non teaching staff. But I find observing them working and giving feedback along the way is most important. We must recognize each staff member needs and deserves consistent feedback, our job is to nudge growth. #satchat
A4 I know my admin is swamped & not able to do more frequent observations. I've always wondered why we don't ask BLAs, IAs & other support personnel to help in this process- what feedback/ideas do they have? Include them as part of the learning team. #satchat
Some corporates have eliminated performance evals - here’s what Wharton biz found and what may make sense in lieu of traditional evals https://t.co/vqRIKAi7YV#satchat
Agree that students are one of the best ways to evaluate effectiveness of teachers. Periodic feedback from them will help improve the facilitation of learning. Our Feedback page https://t.co/ceQhasNULf#satchat
Hahaha - most of my Ts see me in the classroom so often, they don't really change. But when they do, you can bet that a student will tell me "You know, this isn't the way _____ normally teaches."
#satchat
A4) We did this in one of my previous schools. It did amazing things! Evals were done by outside-of-school perspectives, which brought in new faces and made new relationships. It was effective because Ts felt they had an unbiased set of eyes watching them. #satchat
A4: Educator evaluations should be part of a process that is ongoing over years...not an event for a given year or month...with a report prepared periodically...observations, conversations, ‘products’ created...evaluators should be on a journey with those evaluated. #satchat
As an example (and in response to another tweet) if students “liking” a teacher is the metric for a T, and 80% of the students like a teacher, but 20% don’t, is that a B grade? What if that 20% is 100% of the students of color? #satchat
A4: It’s time to move to a #PBL model for evaluation. 3 step process: teacher picks an area of interest for professional growth, they research best practices and then implement new ideas into classrooms. Make it an Action Plan. #satchat
A4 #SatChat
That binder idea sounds like an ordeal and a terrible thing. I can imagine an arg for it, but the process seems much too time consuming vs outcome 🤷🏼♂️
Glad we don’t that.

I see the reasoning behind this, but the student sample size needs to be large enough for the data to be authentic. I've seen students gang up teachers, because of something like a late-policy. I'm not sure if students understand the potential consequences of feedback #satchat
When Ts are forced into compliance, their work loses some joy. Ts must be respected, encouraged, and engaged in conversations in order to flourish. When we are aided to be successful, we can better inspire our Ss #satchat
Very, very true! Good leaders recognize that some of the best eds are incredibly hard on themselves and DON’T need someone else breaking them apart. Great leaders ensure that value, appreciation, and gratitude is felt. This also makes their feedback welcomed. #satchat
A5.2: and they’re evaluated on how they support the rest of the building, or the materials and services they provide the community, or the role they serve as members of the bldg community. #satchat
I once got downgraded on an eval for one student having her head down. She was ESL. She had to tune out the distractions to listen. It's what she did. Was my best performer. #satchat
If a teacher is not continually self-evaluating and changing year to year, period to period, class to class, kid to kid are they getting any better as a teacher? #satchat
A1: thoughtful reflection after watching myself teach or from a colleague. a clear idea on where I’m nailing best practices and outcomes for children w high expectations for academics and behavior. I value it when it identifies an area for me to push myself. #satchat
The Big Event (lesson observation) is the accumulation of so much learning, collaboration, and preparation... what is the formative feedback from multiple sources along the way and how is it implemented? How is the lesson the accumulation of that? #satchat
Likewise, if a Teacher is liked by 20% of the students, but they are 100% of the students of color, is that in line with our mission to reach and engage our students of color? How do we evaluate that? #satchat
I once wrote my goals w a buzzword generator. They had been rejected 3x. When I used the buzzword generator they were approved with flying colors. #satchat

A5: As a coach, I have a plan created around the work I do with teachers. I don't get a lot of feedback from admin. during the year on the plan, but I ask for feedback from the T's to check & adjust. #satchat
Which is why it should be more of a reflective conversation than "evaluation" per se in one direction. Perhaps a teachers reflection counts for "points" in that evaluation. #satchat
A6. One way for me to learn best evaluative practices is thru PLN - learning from others on how they maximize their people and help them grow! #satchat
So, what we are saying is an evaluation process isn’t about comparisons; it’s individualized. We rate based on what that T needs, not comparatively to another T. #satchat
You articulated SO WELL! I want to say that WE ARE ALL IN THIS TOGETHER! Let's build each other up and show respect. Ts are never going to make the 6 figure salary they deserve. But we can make the profession a welcoming and respectful place. It's up to US! #SATCHAT
When Ts are forced into compliance, their work loses some joy. Ts must be respected, encouraged, and engaged in conversations in order to flourish. When we are aided to be successful, we can better inspire our Ss #satchat
Everyone in the professional realm of education is an educator: ESP, Guidance, CST, Teachers, Specialists. We work as a team to keep schools a place of learning & growth, so we are ALL educators, don't you agree? #satchat
#satchat we must hold one another accountable of our short term and long term goals. Consistency allows for check ins. How am I doing? How am I doing now?
As an instructional coach, I work more directly with the T's. I do work with S's, but it's usually to demonstrate something for the teacher to use in class or to get feedback for the teacher. #satchat
A6: Our evaluation model provides resources, but the most impactful recourse I use is Twitter. Looking at observation data and finding resources to improve upon areas of concern using the power of social media is so valuable. #SatChat
A4: School wide learning walks and peer observations. Back to the consistency piece, these should be conversations we are having all the time not just when a “due date” is set. #satchat
#SATChat A5 The key to their evaluation is regularly communicating expectations. They are not mind readers. Coaching them up on a regular basis will help them be better at their jobs
A3: Evaluations, for me, drive reflection and personal introspection...Where have I been and where am I going? What do I need to celebrate? What changes do I need to make? #satchat
I agree with both of you. Student evals are important to reflect on daily practice & routines, but admin evals are important as a professional reflection tool. I give Ss a survey quarterly, but often desire admin feedback that I don't see as much as I'd like #satchat
A4: How about when selecting random students, we ask them to do a mini self assessment of their growth since the beginning of school year. We can also ask about some of their favorite projects or lessons from that class. #satchat#allaboutthestudents#growth#TrustTheProcess
A2: #satchat we must hold one another accountable of our short term and long term goals. Consistency allows for check ins. How am I doing? How am I doing now?
Ongoing walk-throughs, peer observations and feedback, self-evaluation and informal and formal observations provide an avenue for growth as teachers move through their careers, see it as opportunity, not “gotcha” 😊 #satchat
Exactly! If we're going to incorporate student surveys (which we should), the sample size should be large enough for the data to be representative. The survey questions themselves, should be analyzed too. #satchat

A5. CT does have rubrics for non teaching educators. https://t.co/8NuuxqLOsR However, as an LMS I am eval. under the teacher rubric. https://t.co/fmOUesAI0T Much of what we do in our library to service the entire school is not included in my eval.
A5: I am a non teaching staff member but work for my county within the school district. I think a great way would be to evaluate us like they would anyone else and reinforce the practices they would like us to use on a daily basis. #satchat#satchat
A6: Resources from my Twitter #pln#pln365#satchat & conversations with colleagues/admin/even family about books, data, various knowledge to think on & provide reflection within the profession
Okay, thanks, I better understand the question now. Hmm.... So, how are you evaluated? How is your progress or growth measured by and shared with superiors? #satchat
It was torturous. My current principal (new school) doesn't have the same expectations & it is much better. But, she is also in & out of classrooms ALL THE TIME. So...she knows what is going on. However, it does help keep your professional portfolio up to date 😆#satchat

This is the sign of a truly terrible evaluation. The evaluator should notice this, talk to you about it (or the student). No judgement should be made before having all the info.
#satchat
Q5: I look for people who are good at something I want to be good at. I follow, talk to, or observe them. I read a lot of books outside of edu to freshen my brain. (Ironic, since I write books inside edu, lol.) #satchat
Disagree. I’m not as concerned about sample size. If I have three students of color, and they all struggle with the Teacher, but the rest of the class love that teacher, that’s valid. That’s valid. That’s valid. Inclusion and equity is not a validity problem. #satchat
My favorite educational author of all time has an amazing book on leadership, including evaluations...it's called Leading with Focus. I reccomend it to Ts as well as Principals. Great great stuff. #satchat

My question is Do your admins know how to evaluate their non academic content teachers, i.e. art, music, pe, etc. Many admins I’ve talked to have said they don’t know the curriculums. Have wondered what feedback is based on... #satchat
Can you elaborate on that? Does that mean that instructional coaches are evaluated and measured by how much their coachee-teachers perform and grow? #satchat
I appreciate that you said that but this is some serious grape kool-aid from state on down. Makes me feel depressed and hopeless. I was highest ratings. Now, mediocre. Oh, and gone. #satchat :)

I use S evals personally & the district requires one yearly. Our principal never sees them unless I share it with her. Which I do because I want her help & I know it won't be a "gotcha" but I have had admin I wouldn't share it with for that exact reason #satchat
My question is Do your admins know how to evaluate their non academic content teachers, i.e. art, music, pe, etc. Many admins I’ve talked to have said they don’t know the curriculums. Have wondered what feedback is based on... #satchat
@ericabrivera#SatChat A4 Honestly 1 AP that helped me the most was disliked by most Ts. She knew I wanted to be more inclusive & equitable. She gave me feedback where I needed to improve on creating & maintaining safe spaces for Ss. Improving equity is 1 reason I am on Twitter.
A6. Conversations with colleagues, my NJ Social Studies Supervisors Association and my North Jersey ELA Supervisor Group networks, items from Solution Tree all help me stay informed. #satchat
I have a GBE (Goal Based Evaluation) and I use a self-evaluation rubric created by @brightmorningtm#artofcoaching to work from. I get feedback through out the year from T's as my own evaluation and adjust from there. #satchat
Two things. I’m a fan of midyear reviews because it allows time for folx to make adjustments and demonstrate learning. However, if you never engage with someone, not sure how you evaluate them. #satchat
A4: Evaluation should not be done through traditional means (e.g., Test). It should be done through innovative, differentiated means to bring out the best in every student according to their abilities and learning styles. #satchat
Do leveled reading groups work?
"Evidence suggests that the practice may be less beneficial than T's think: It can exacerbate achievement gaps & even slow reading growth for some children unless the groups are fluid & focused on skills."
#rEDVan#satchathttps://t.co/KCEVbZpQF4
A6: Evaluators must continue learning about best practices & innovative pedagogy to be capable of giving high-quality, valuable feedback. I learn from my #pln, #edcamps, PD, blogs, articles, & books! #satchat
A6. It is critical that evals reflect the nature of the classroom & student demographic. One-size-fits-all evals are rarely equitable or effective. We must push for autonomy to differentiate evals in the same way we expect our teachers to differentiate for our students. #satchat
We are fortunate to have a strong organization in Michigan. @MEMSPA and #memspachat has helped us stay current. Specifically, being involved in Leadership Matters. Also, attending Danielson trainings when available. Staying current on best teaching practices.

That could be one process of evaluation of coaches. Coaches can be evaluated on content create to support instruction, coachee feedback, Admin feedback, self-reflection, and contact time with teachers they support #satchat
Can you elaborate on that? Does that mean that instructional coaches are evaluated and measured by how much their coachee-teachers perform and grow? #satchat
Students + teachers aren't generally given time to reflect + as a result many folks don't have frameworks + strategies for how to do so meaningfully. Time is important, but so is some modeling for how to really think about coaching oneself toward improvement. #SatChat

This is another reason why reflection for teachers is vital: most don't get the substantive feedback they want + need through the evaluation process, so they need to self-coach. Even when teachers are getting feedback, it often isn't timely, usable, or growth-oriented. #SatChat
Pineapple charts are great, but totally agree: Admin support is critical. I take time to facilitate and oversee peer observations for 2 reasons: 1, to support the teachers and, 2, to reflect on the process with the observing teacher from an admin lens. #satchat
Our admin introduced pineapple charts, I think they are a great idea but I have yet been to visit anyone’s class b/c I get so busy with my own stuff. I know teachers hate when things are mandated but that would at least make me put the time aside to do it.
So let’s think about this as engineers. Evals may be useful to teachers if they meet the constraint of not being threatening. If so, we can move on to criteria re feedback, reflection etc. In MI we don’t meet the constraint. #satchat

Kinder T @LindsayKemeny only learned how to effectively teach reading when supporting her dyslexic son.
An important story:

Continuing education and asking for advice from peers is always helpful. I also think that you can get the most honest help from your peers because they have are in the same school as yourself and might have some of the same questions or needs. #satchat
Same. Need tech coach and instructional coach in buildings. I naturally do both but feel stretched too thin to do both well. Sometimes the coaching Ts need has nothing to do with tech. When I start talking classroom management, Ts look at me funny like it's not my job #satchat
The hardest thing about being a coach is spending the amount of time needed with all the T's. #satchat I'm in a K-8 school, so I really wish there was one more of me.
Q6 CLASS also focuses observation on T's inclusion through interactions with S's of critical components of effective teaching/learning cycle in 20 minute observations.#satchat
Some of the richest pedagogy can be found in non-traditional classrooms and electives. Look at the learner-centered practices happening in music, art, physical education, etc. Content-area teachers may learn a lot by connecting with "special area" teachers. #Satchat
Favorite quote from @tombennett71 opening remarks at #rEDVan
“We’re not looking for magic bullets, we’re looking for best bets...where craft and evidence meet is the exciting place in education”
A6: #satchat resources for effective evaluating include #growthmindset - the belief in people and their desire to be their best for children; #restorativepractices - to provide opportunities for growth in a positive way, and #bestpractices - to ensure research backs feedback.
And that to me so often breaks my heart; “we cannot draw conclusions based on less than 1% of the population...” um. That less than 1% of the population represents 100% of our students of color, and we care about them, right? #satchat
#satchat Many interesting perspectives here this morning. Consistent thread is to focus on growth & improvement. We need this framed within an accountability system acceptable to stakeholders. Drive the narrative by sharing how teachers are learning and growing.
#satchat I have been stuck inside with the worst cold for two days! I am so glad that I could connect with all of you this AM. Great #learning and #collaboration without getting anyone else sick! Looking forward to chatting again next week!
A5: There is usually a gap here. Can be the same type of checklist/rubric as for classroom/specialist teachers. Doesn't have to be that different but the system should be consistent & why not develop tool together, as we would do with our students. Lots of value in that. #Satchat
Thank you. You must be one of the guys w the track shoes, lol.
The whole system's bad. People can't blame their evaluators. Seriously. This goes from the DOE to Commissioners. And it's largely fiscal. Finger pointing started in 2008 after the market crash;) #satchat
