  • CoachBaierIU1 Mar 7 @ 7:07 PM EST

A1 burnout demotivates teachers. I spent three years trying to figure out how to cope with being burnt out. Being burned out makes you dread coming to class because you fear students might be affected by you #EdutopiaChat

  • shevtech Mar 7 @ 7:08 PM EST
To me, burnout & locus of control are so intertwined -when you don't feel like you can influence anything, you burn out...and when you burn out, you feel powerless #EdutopiaChat
  • Rdene915 Mar 7 @ 7:08 PM EST
A1 It can wear you down, lead to negative feelings, lack of motivation for pushing through, lose sight of the reason a person became a teacher #EdutopiaChat

A1. I’m a student-teacher, and even a newbie like me is susceptible to burn out. It happens most when I feel like I need to formally grade everything that is on my desk. #edutopiachat
  • eternitymod Mar 7 @ 7:09 PM EST
A1: I myself am overseas as a way to avoid burnout. And after a decade in urban ed, I have seen way too many teachers sacrificed at the altar of: standardized tests; do more with less expectations; stringent evaluations that aren’t fair; and just plain ol fatigue. #EdutopiaChat
  • flyfish29 Mar 7 @ 7:09 PM EST
A1 You can easily get where you think spending more time will help which of course leads to more burnout. #EdutopiaChat
  • booklady_weave Mar 7 @ 7:09 PM EST
A1: when burnout sets in, a general malaise seems to permeate the campus, & it gets harder to rise above the negativity. #EdutopiaChat
  • therunnerteach Mar 7 @ 7:09 PM EST
A1: It’s ever present; it isn’t like you just go through a burnt out period your 1st year. I get burnt out when coaching track starts, trying to balance everything. I’ve seen colleagues burnt out when they need support and don’t receive it (from parents, admin, etc)#EdutopiaChat
  • HigbeeWilson Mar 7 @ 7:09 PM EST
A1: Becoming frustrated, unmotivated to learn and try new things. #EdutopiaChat
    In reply to @edutopia
  • ReadforCupcakes Mar 7 @ 7:09 PM EST
A1: No motivation, no energy to try new things, less than stellar relationship building with the Ss, doing the same thing you've always done, BORING, DULL, running out of school at 3:15 each day, no joy! #EdutopiaChat
  • osalvas Mar 7 @ 7:09 PM EST
I feel when you are overwhelmed, your creativity is affected. It’s difficult to move forward and to feel current seems draining. That mental states affects you physically as well. #EdutopiaChat

A1: I think the biggest affect of burnout is the lost joy that Ts find in teaching; when working with your Ss doesn't bring you joy you're in trouble #EdutopiaChat
  • broph6 Mar 7 @ 7:09 PM EST
A1 When feeling “burnout” there is less joy in the day to day. It is more difficult to see what is going right. #edutopiachat

  • ash_kate3 Mar 7 @ 7:10 PM EST
A1. This is such a sad thing to have happen or watch happen and is defiantly my biggest career fear. It takes away the teachers passion and makes them less tolerable to negative parts of the job. #edutopiachat
  • kaitlyn57718943 Mar 7 @ 7:10 PM EST
A1 Only my third year and still love my job and what I do, but some days are rough. I feel like a lot of teachers don’t want to adapt to change and this is a major impact. If you’ve taught a way for 10 years, it’s hard teach a different way. #edutopiachat

A1 Lack of voice and choice leads to professional burnout. Same can be said for students. #EdutopiaChat
  • JoriKrulder Mar 7 @ 7:10 PM EST

Teacher burnout is also a way of blaming teachers for not being more careful with how they spend their energy rather than acknowledging the unrealistic demands made on them. It pulls the focus from what we demand of teachers to evaluating teachers as deficient. #EdutopiaChat

Exactly. Saying that teachers are burned out because they “lost their passion” or “don’t focus on students” treats teachers as incompetents who can’t handle the professional responsibilities and often labels those advocating for change to ed policy as complainers. #edutopiachat
