#edutopiachat I'm Jenny Grant Rankin, Ph.D. I wrote a book called "First Aid for Teacher Burnout: How You Can Find Peace and Success" & served as a teacher (bulk of career), school admin, district admin, & chief ed.&research officer.
A1:I have seen most of my mentors and colleagues who taught with me when I began burnout and retire early. 12 years in I am understanding why #EdutopiaChat
A1: Due to burnout, teachers either quit or they remain in the job without feeling the joy, peace, and satisfaction one hopes to have in a job. #EdutopiaChat
A1: interestingly burnout pushes some people *up* the “ladder” and into administration / away from the classroom, and not necessarily for the right reasons. #EdutopiaChat
Teacher burnout can be a consequence of exhaustion but also a result of stagnation. It is critical that districts develop teacher leadership positions that keep great teachers in the classroom but allow them to elevate and scale their expertise #EdutopiaChat
A1 I was under so much stress I ended up having a heart attack at 48 while walking around my classroom on a Monday morning in September 2 years ago. Since then I’ve changed my life in many ways, never again #EdutopiaChat
A1- Yes, I have seen teacher burnout. Sometimes in a teacher’s lounge or hearing a teacher say to student who wants to be a teacher, “Why would you want to do that?” #EdutopiaChat
A1 burnout demotivates teachers. I spent three years trying to figure out how to cope with being burnt out. Being burned out makes you dread coming to class because you fear students might be affected by you #EdutopiaChat
A1 I myself am not a teacher but have seen quite a few teachers not do their jobs properly - As Jenny mentioned below not feel the joy of teaching #EdutopiaChat
A1. It has impacted them both emotionally and physically. Research shows that burnout correlates with symptoms of depression, poor health choices to cope with stress, and reduction of intrinsic motivation #EdutopiaChat
To me, burnout & locus of control are so intertwined -when you don't feel like you can influence anything, you burn out...and when you burn out, you feel powerless #EdutopiaChat
A1 It can wear you down, lead to negative feelings, lack of motivation for pushing through, lose sight of the reason a person became a teacher #EdutopiaChat
A1: It is difficult to see the big picture when burnt out. Teaching becomes a day to struggle rather than a path to excellence as an educator.
#EdutopiaChat
After mentoring hundreds of teachers over 25 years, these are the 4 main reasons why teachers become dispassionate, disillusioned, or demoralized. #EdutopiaChathttps://t.co/mApZjSfsu7
A1. I’m a student-teacher, and even a newbie like me is susceptible to burn out. It happens most when I feel like I need to formally grade everything that is on my desk. #edutopiachat
A1: I myself am overseas as a way to avoid burnout. And after a decade in urban ed, I have seen way too many teachers sacrificed at the altar of: standardized tests; do more with less expectations; stringent evaluations that aren’t fair; and just plain ol fatigue. #EdutopiaChat
A1: It’s ever present; it isn’t like you just go through a burnt out period your 1st year. I get burnt out when coaching track starts, trying to balance everything. I’ve seen colleagues burnt out when they need support and don’t receive it (from parents, admin, etc)#EdutopiaChat
A1: No motivation, no energy to try new things, less than stellar relationship building with the Ss, doing the same thing you've always done, BORING, DULL, running out of school at 3:15 each day, no joy! #EdutopiaChat
I feel when you are overwhelmed, your creativity is affected. It’s difficult to move forward and to feel current seems draining. That mental states affects you physically as well. #EdutopiaChat
A1: I think the biggest affect of burnout is the lost joy that Ts find in teaching; when working with your Ss doesn't bring you joy you're in trouble #EdutopiaChat
A1. This is such a sad thing to have happen or watch happen and is defiantly my biggest career fear. It takes away the teachers passion and makes them less tolerable to negative parts of the job. #edutopiachat
A1 Only my third year and still love my job and what I do, but some days are rough. I feel like a lot of teachers don’t want to adapt to change and this is a major impact. If you’ve taught a way for 10 years, it’s hard teach a different way. #edutopiachat
I think student teachers can even be more susceptible to burnout because of your multiple roles as student and teacher as well as adapting to a very challenging job #EdutopiaChat
RT edutopia "RT teacherforest: A1 burnout demotivates teachers. I spent three years trying to figure out how to cope with being burnt out. Being burned out makes you dread coming to class because you fear students might be affected by you #EdutopiaChat"
A1: I am a result of both burnout and I am getting my doctorate in Digital Educational Research. I think that the emotional and mental stress is a serious issue for burnout #EdutopiaChat
#EdutopiaChat I'm on my first year studying Primary Education so haven't been in a classroom yet. I love kids and hope that I'll be able to keep upto date with everything. I feel like organisation is key! But this can be proved difficult with what life throws at you sometimes
Such an important point, Michelle. We cannot afford to lose even one more passionate, devoted new teacher because of lack of support or empathy. #EdutopiaChat
A1. I’m a student-teacher, and even a newbie like me is susceptible to burn out. It happens most when I feel like I need to formally grade everything that is on my desk. #edutopiachat
A1. Burnout in myself: work-life imbalance= too tired some days to make self-care a priority (exercise, sleep). In others: all-or-none thinking, deficit-view of students and school leaders #EdutopiaChat
A1: Yes! This time of year becomes high stress for everyone on my campus. What teachers forget is that kids still have strong perceptive skills and their behavior, reactions, responses & stresses stem from the examples we set for them. #EdutopiaChat
A1- I’m a preservice teacher but a veteran activist in anti war and anti fascist struggles. The burnout rate rises exponentially with the work being done to disrupt the dominant order. A possible solution is radical social reorganization. #EdutopiaChat
Yes, the Sunday afternoon dread is the worst! Actually, one of the best cures I've found for it is Twitter chats. #aplitchat has made me look forward to Mondays again #EdutopiaChat
Teacher burnout is also a way of blaming teachers for not being more careful with how they spend their energy rather than acknowledging the unrealistic demands made on them. It pulls the focus from what we demand of teachers to evaluating teachers as deficient. #EdutopiaChat
Teacher burnout can be a consequence of exhaustion but also a result of stagnation. It is critical that districts develop teacher leadership positions that keep great teachers in the classroom but allow them to elevate and scale their expertise #EdutopiaChat
Also important to note the ways that burnout is radicalized/classed/gendered/etc, with many people pushed to the margins *also* doing the heaviest work — for example, carrying the burdens of tokenization in schools. #EdutopiaChat
A1: I've spent some time in an environment with a lot of burnout and I've seen how it can spread through the ranks and demotivate EVERYONE. #EdutopiaChat
A1: I get bunout every year...but creating centers for mental life support like a praise board, secret pals, an encouragement box...they are correct for the rough days... The book Unchained has a lot of these tips to set you up for positivity in the face of burnout. #EdutopiaChat
A1 teacher burn out makes you question everything you do, students do, and what the school does. It’s the leading cause why most teachers don’t stay in the profession. #EdutopiaChat
A1: I’ve seen great teachers leave feeling beaten and in tears everyday from stress. I had to take a break from teaching after my first 2 years in a high needs school. Did a stint in the corporate world for 6 mo. Went back to the classroom, which is my calling. #EdutopiaChat
A1. It is tends to manifest into stress and a lack of confidence in their talents and confidence. They begin to question their choice of profession. They begin to question themselves in a manner that is unproductive.#EdutopiaChat
When teachers become “burned out” they feel like they can’t make an educational impact or connection with students. This also results in a decline in the joy of the art of teaching. #edutopiachat

#EdutopiaChat Teachers need to be enabled with time so they can pursue content depth. Asking teachers to be a mile wide and an inch deep is a bad recipe, and will lead to burnout.
A1 I realized I was feeling a little burnt out earlier this year when a student pointed out to me that I wasn't myself (had come in tired, grumpy)... he noticed I wasn't giving him/them my best self. Students notice. #EdutopiaChat
A1: Does anyone think that the constant connectivity of teachers in 2018 is pushing burnout? Parent emails at midnight? Late night messages? Push notifications? #EdutopiaChat
Teacher burnout is also a way of blaming teachers for not being more careful with how they spend their energy rather than acknowledging the unrealistic demands made on them. It pulls the focus from what we demand of teachers to evaluating teachers as deficient. #EdutopiaChat

A1: The worst thing about teacher burnout is that it affects the culture of the building. I have seen it firsthand, and culture is hard to change once it reaches that point. #EdutopiaChat
#edutopiachat Burnout of a staff group. Have seen decreasing motivation and increasing absenteeism. The head down, don't notice what is going on. CAn lead to a toxic workplace
Teacher burnout is a result of teachers being denied access to the moral rewards and goals of teaching, often because of policies teachers are required to enforce, despite their hazard to students. See Santoro’s article on this effect here: https://t.co/9qiTJd0vHk#edutopiachat
A1 Burnout is real. As more and more gets added to our plate I think it becomes so overwhelming to keep up. As a Kinder teacher and mother of 3, it is hard for me to be the teacher I want to be without devoting 20 plus extra hours per week prepping and planning. #edutopiachat
A1 stress --> burnout --> LESS resilience, composure, energy, passion, connection
All the things that are good in a variety of ways for a variety of teachers becomes too much to achieve when Maslow's hierarchy is restricted by burnout #EdutopiaChat
So we know we get burned out. But for me the larger question is, how do we detach ourselves mentally from work that's so personal & heartfelt?

A1: burnout is common and unfortunately contagious! I think that efficacy plays a big part. We, as leaders, need to help our teachers see and feel their impact and how much they impact our students lives!! #EdutopiaChat
True. It's easy for a building's culture to turn negative, but I've learned to cultivate more positive connections, both online and onsite #EdutopiaChat
A1: Frustration can set in quickly. Ts will (and have) shutdown. It is leadership’s responsibility to protect Ts from initiative overload! #EdutopiaChat
A1 when I burned out back in 2014 I had to find a new department where I would feel a sense of affirmation and accomplishment. When I burned out last 2016, I needed to find a new challenge. I hope the pattern does not continue this year. #EdutopiaChat
A1 - The brighter Ts burn the quicker they burn out. And imagine the kids! Class after class of rigor, new info, and rules. Remember to ask for and receive help when you need it Ts. 🙏 #edutopiachat
The demands are WAY unrealistic. There is much teachers can do to make the best of the situation (so the job is less taxing), but change at higher levels is definitely needed. Teacher voice can play an active role in changing policy for the better. #EdutopiaChat
A2. I usually come bearing coffee and a sympathetic ear. I follow one of Stephen Covey’s rules: First seek to understand rather than be understood. #edutopiachat
This is such a great question. It's a balance - too much emotional distance and we don't fully serve our students; not enough and it's impossible to sustain #EdutopiaChat
A2: Give a colleague time to vent, but also be there to problem solve, brainstorm solutions, offer long term solutions (e.g., if workload's a problem, collaborate/share lessons). #EdutopiaChat
with empathy because I have been there...but truth be told I often unintentionally end up commiserating with them which ultimately only adds fuel to the fire but so often get worked up over the same things #EdutopiaChat
A2: It depends if you are coming as a peer or leader. Peer is a simple conversation. Leader has to be more careful not to come off as condescending or negative. Being genuine and having strong relationships are critical #EdutopiaChat
A2: When I notice a colleague is experiencing burnout, I give them a chance to vent, empathy, and then we start talking ideas. I've found that shifting the conversation to the future tense helps #EdutopiaChat
A2. The research I conducted on this topic supports the idea that novice and veteran teachers have a different set of needs and are impacted by different factors of burnout. Understanding the cause is important and provide consistent support and guidance #EdutopiaChat
A2 give them time off or ask them to step away from stressors. Give them a sense of accomplishment through small compliments and citations. Validate their feelings and work towards something they can achieve. #EdutopiaChat
RT ElaineMiles3: A1: When it has happened to me it reduces my motivation to further my learning and I found that my family got the “leftovers.” #EdutopiaChat New posts for #learning#pln#education#edtech#edchat
A2: coming from a place of racial and class privilege, with any and all resources - economic, social, emotional - that I can offer, and with much love and solidarity. #EdutopiaChat
A2: setting personal boundaries is critical; as invested as we are in teaching we cannot allow it to be our entire life; do something you love you haven't done in ages, take a trip #EdutopiaChat
Mindfulness & having a Growth Mindset can help; perseverance and grit. Having the idea in your head knowing that it is okay to make mistakes, even in front of your students because you are only human. #EdutopiaChat
#edutopiachat a2 Please do not say "you need to look after yourself". Most useless phrase. I used to make staff leave on time on Mondays, the walk out was healthy for us too. Was changing behaviour one thing at a time. WAlking no #1
Q2: Approach with empathy and an open ear, some coffee and a non judgmental attitude. Burnout is hopefully temporary and can sometimes be remedied by sleep. Mental health days are necessary sometimes. #edutopiachat
#edutopiachat Nature of the job,it sucks, period.Quote to think about:
“You just keep pushing. You just keep pushing. I made every mistake that could be made. But I just kept pushing.”

A2 I approach a colleague who is burning out with 100% understanding: an ear to listen, a shoulder to cry on, and a joke or two to lighten the moment. Take a breath, and let’s see how tomorrow can be better! #edutopiachat
A2 I try to find out what I as principal can take off their plate, look for opportunities to collaborate with peers. Also a short note helping people to see the good goes a LONG way! #EdutopiaChat
A2 I think we must expect positivity from each other..burned out or not. Otherwise the environment can get toxic. I'd probably suggest exercise and mini vacations/mental health days #EdutopiaChat
A2. By being kind. Compliment specifically, let your colleague or leader know that you see them. It’s free and can make the world of difference. #EdutopiaChat
A2: Depends on the person. Get to know them, listen, and give them what they need accordingly - whether it's a sounding board, support, inspiration, work bff, coach, workout buddy, a walk, or coffee/treat. #edutopiachat
A2: my colleagues & I try to be transparent w/ each other, and sometimes that means we need to vent while at the same time recognizing that we’re venting, so then we can almost press a restart button, efforts in being self-aware👍🤪. #EdutopiaChat
A2. Sometimes, I hear stuff in the hallways and break rooms that make me worried for my mentor teachers. I like to ask them what they're doing in their classrooms, and ask for some tips – I get some advice, and they reflect on their practice! #EdutopiaChat
A2: Make their day as often as you can. Be a voice for them. Give them a reason to laugh and smile. Remind them that to many of the kids they teach, they are the world and that at the end of the day, the other stuff doesn’t matter. #EdutopiaChat
#EdutopiaChat A2: Mostly what I feel I can do... when visiting schools I do my best to point out all the positive I see, cheering on teachers and library media specialists as well as presenting my content ...
So true! For example, "tedium" is a HUGE burnout trigger for veterans, yet newer teachers (even those teaching 10 years or less) rarely struggle with tedium. #EdutopiaChat
A2. The research I conducted on this topic supports the idea that novice and veteran teachers have a different set of needs and are impacted by different factors of burnout. Understanding the cause is important and provide consistent support and guidance #EdutopiaChat
A1: I have a hard time caring about paper content or structure once we get to this point in the semester, so I half ass my grading bc it's not like they read my comments anyway ... #profprobs#proflife#EdutopiaChat
A2 - You have to listen to them, let them know you care, and find something to reignite their spark. Sometimes we just need a reminder that teachers are awesome and are appreciated! #EdutopiaChat
A2: I always ask how I can help and I give my dept permission to leave the job at school. I say almost daily - give us your best from 8 - 4 then go be with your family or do things you enjoy #EdutopiaChat
RT edutopia "RT ElaineMiles3: A1: When it has happened to me it reduces my motivation to further my learning and I found that my family got the “leftovers.” #EdutopiaChat"
A1. Hi friends, Jack from Australia here. I wrote an article on teacher burnout last year asking the question - are we teaching to survive or teaching to thrive? How are we coming together in community? https://t.co/NqJ2sPtM6r#EdutopiaChat
This is one of the most important things I'm trying to help my student teacher learn. If you look at every day as an experiment, there are no failures, only opportunities to reflect and grow #EdutopiaChat

A1: I’ve seen burnout affect teachers to the point of the best teachers leaving the field or counting down their years to retirement. It seems the more passionate the teacher, the harder burnout hits. #EdutopiaChat
Exactly. Saying that teachers are burned out because they “lost their passion” or “don’t focus on students” treats teachers as incompetents who can’t handle the professional responsibilities and often labels those advocating for change to ed policy as complainers. #edutopiachat
The demands are WAY unrealistic. There is much teachers can do to make the best of the situation (so the job is less taxing), but change at higher levels is definitely needed. Teacher voice can play an active role in changing policy for the better. #EdutopiaChat
A2 a nice long chat where the burned out teacher vents out their frustrations. Sometimes we just need an avenue to sound out all our frustrations #EdutopiaChat
A2: with as much support and empathy as possible. I’ve been there too. My advice to them is notice the daily positives that happen, and put energy into something that really matters to them. I make it known that I will support whatever their ultimate decision is. #edutopiachat
A2. I would definitely approach them with empathy, Support them by listening to them, Having that conversation over coffee/lunch. Allow them to express them self. No one wants to be in that position. #EdutopiaChat
You approach them through the lens of empathy and compassion . Akilah, from VA Professional Learning Specialist popping in for a bit...this topic matters so much #EdutopiaChat#SelfCare#WellnessWednesday
Absolutely. Leaders have to model self care for teachers. I DO NOT answer or send any non emergency correspondence after 5pm or weekends. Purposeful protection of space away from the job is crucial #EdutopiaChat
A2. I am not yet in the teaching profession so have not faced this but I would say that I would approach this colleague with kindness, gentleness and compassion (Col 3.12) and would offer a helping hand with the action being dependent on how close we are. #edutopiachat
A2: Have a heart to heart discussion reminding them ask themselves WHY they chose this profession in the first place. Sadly, their reasons then aren’t matching the reasons now. #edutopiachat
A2- Approaching a colleague who is burnt out is tough. One approach is to help them focus on all the joys of teaching and share instructional strategies! #EdutopiaChat
What a wonderful gesture of support, Mary. Just lightening a teacher’s load, even temporarily, proves that you understand and are there to help. #EdutopiaChat
A2 I try to find out what I as principal can take off their plate, look for opportunities to collaborate with peers. Also a short note helping people to see the good goes a LONG way! #EdutopiaChat
A2 I also give my airplane speech quite often. On a plane they remind you to take care of yourself first in order to take care of others. #EdutopiaChat
A2: Offering help, acknowledging/asking if you’ve contributed to their stress & insisting on being a better colleague for them, offering a listening ear & supportive voice, reminding them of their strengths & the value they bring to you, the students & the staff. #EdutopiaChat
#edutopiachat a2 @teacherforest WOW, just wow, if I had more colleagues like you, work life would have been a very wonderful place. This is helpful advice and action from a colleague.
A2 give them time off or ask them to step away from stressors. Give them a sense of accomplishment through small compliments and citations. Validate their feelings and work towards something they can achieve. #EdutopiaChat
A2: First, I have the students approach them with notes of impact...then after that loving reminder of the impact I offer my help. If I can do anything to lessen their burden during the burnout I will...I will be the rock in the storm and one day they will be mine. #EdutopiaChat
I believe it is part of a systematic approach to discrediting and devaluing public teachers to justify replacing us with unskilled labor delivering corporate-penned, one-size-fits-all curricula. #edutopiachat
A2: I think the easiest way to approach a teacher experiencing burnout is to just start a friendly conversation about how the week is going and how we can help each other with our struggles. If they want to talk, they will #EdutopiaChat
Oh no – just goes to show you how environment can impact the people in it! Makes me think about how a bad classroom environment can cause Ss to shut down or burn out themselves. #EdutopiaChat
A previous one had rampant behavior issues and a lack of organization that made it hard to feel like I was accomplishing anything, and a lot of the teachers there felt the same way.
A2 Any LotR fans out there? But seriously, I try to take something off their plate -- e.g. offer them a ready-made lesson so they have less planning to do -- and model staying positive, esp. in how I talk about students #edutopiachat
A2 I try to find out what I as principal can take off their plate, look for opportunities to collaborate with peers. Also a short note helping people to see the good goes a LONG way! #EdutopiaChat
A2: Burnout comes when hope is at its lowest. Teaching is an act of faith, and we need to remind each other that our efforts take time to manifest. Keep the faith and keep fighting the good fight! #EdutopiaChat
#EdutopicChat Q2. I would be ready to help in any way I can. Compassion all the way! Possibly make general conversation too to try ease stress #edutopiachat
Teacher burnout occurs when you think everything has equal importance in your work. When everything is a priority, nothing is! Reflect on and prioritize your work. #EdutopiaChat
Great! Notes of impact are also helpful for the students writing them (seeing how far they've come, how they thrive, how they're connected with school and staff, etc.). #EdutopiaChat
I am a librarian...but teachers come and vent. I always try to tell them good things I hear students say about their class. Uplifting to see others perspective. Teaching is so stressful. 😒 #EdutopiaChat
A2: In my experience Ts that burnout are the ones the try to do it alone. We are a team ~ Ed is a team approach! How can I support you? BUT, if the T doesn’t reach out for support... no one knows. And that’s unfortunate. #EdutopiaChat

A1: teachers learn to solve problems in their classes, but to create systemic change they need more time than a planning period. So they feel and often leave. #EdutopiaChat
A3. Take deep breaths, remember that it's okay to get overwhelmed from time to time, and always remember we all can only do the best we can. Mentally go back to the best times and focus on why I teach! #EdutopiaChat
A3: Target triggers! Collaborate & rethink homework to cut work volume, fight veteran's tedium, team up to improve work environment & relations w/admin&community, overhaul student behavior, etc. #EdutopiaChat

A3: being in community with like-minded, loving people. It is so critical to be in spaces — physical, online, texting, whatever they look like — with people who understand your work and work in solidarity. #EdutopiaChat
A3: It is okay to say weekends are family time and not check e-mail/messages until Monday, or to have a shut off time each night. Balance between work and home so you can give your all to each party! #edutopiachat
A3: I have learned to take things on that I am passionate about and truly want to be part of. I also make time for my personal life in addition to professional responsibilities. #edutopiachat
A3. I remind myself of my core beliefs. One is: if we lead interesting lives outside the classroom, we can be interesting people in our students’ eyes. That gives me room for some grace. #edutopiachat

Double down on building and maintaining positive relationships with students and colleagues. They’re most important during the busiest times. #EdutopiaChat

A3 I got burnt out by working in a district that forced scripted programs down my throat, demanded I get 10 hours of work done in 5 and paid me for 4. I finally gave up trying to fix the broken place & found an amazing district where the joy of teaching has returned #EdutopiaChat
A3. Don’t be afraid to seek help. Often times, teachers internalize the burnout they feel because they don’t want it to be viewed as a sign of weakness. Find a way to reflect daily. Find joy in each day. @OrganicLeaderVB ‘s work in this area is a great resource #EdutopiaChat
A3 ITS OK TO SAY NO, you do not need to take on everything, handle everything, head everything. A school is a community, let others take the reign. Step back and enjoy. #EdutopiaChat
A3: I focus my energy on what I’m passionate about which makes the work meaningful and builds resilience to burnout. I prioritize the menial tasks. I ask for help and tell others how I’m feeling. I celebrate my successes!! #EdutopiaChat
Both of those are so important. Staying in the flow of a passion boosts happiness (there's a great documentary on Netflix about it, I think it's called "Happy"). #edutopiachat
A3: Find that thing that makes it worth it to keep showing up everyday. Never let go of that thing. Smile about that thing. Share that thing. Go do that thing. #edutopiachat

A4 Spirit/dress up days + staff potlucks for snacks throughout the day + a staff acknowledgement board/box/email. We’re the Cougars so we have monthly Cougar Creds where we write awesome things about each other, and share @ staff meetings #EdutopiaChat#TeacherBurnout#EdChat
RT edutopia "RT JoriKrulder: On my tough days, when I'm really dragging, I know that students will ALWAYS remind me why I love this job. #EdutopiaChathttps://t.co/ZRRkQ8OjVG"
RT edutopia "RT nicoleandwill: A4: Do something fun in your class everyday. Tell a corny joke. Play a song and dance. Play a game of silent ball. Do a funny brain break. Let go and laugh with your students! #EdutopiaChat"
We start every faculty meeting with Shark (we are the MRHS Sharks) Shout Outs- where staff publicly praise each other - last meeting it lasted over 5 minutes! Enthusiasm is free & it's contagious #EdutopiaChat#edchat
A4: Offer the chance to celebrate accomplishments, or at least offer the opportunity to finish work in a positive environment before adding more to the plate of teachers who are trying their best at being educators, counselors, mentors, advisers, role models, etc. #edutopiaChat
A3 1) Physical exercise. A 10-15 minute walk per day alleviates stress and helps me focus and be more productive. If I'm trying to work through an issue or have to prepare a presentation or write, I can often work out the details sub-consciously while walking.
#EdutopiaChat
A5: Collaborate (split workload & share what you plan/create) with 1 or more colleagues who share same work ethic, teaching style, and content area/grade. #EdutopiaChat
A4: Actually giving teachers their planning time. We NEED that interrupted time everyday. There’s so much pressure for technology rich lessons, parent/community contact, and relationship building, but there’s no time to do it all in one day. #EdutopiaChat

A3. Repeat the mantra “Progress, not perfection.” We must continuously improve, but not sacrifice our well-being and mental health in the process. #EdutopiaChat
5 PLNs like these are one way of getting support. Ideas here are always worth trying and doing, insights make me realize that I am doing something right in the classroom. #EdutopiaChat
A4 We need to remind students and teachers alike to take time out for self care. Seems a common denominator in a lot of burn out cases is failing to take time to unplug and take care of your own needs. #EdutopiaChat
A1 burnout demotivates teachers. I spent three years trying to figure out how to cope with being burnt out. Being burned out makes you dread coming to class because you fear students might be affected by you #EdutopiaChat
One small thing is having more of a growth mindset. Realizing when you're stuck or in a fixed pattern of thought, then applying growth mindset strategies to move on with it. #EdutopiaChat
A3 2) Take a step back and look at the big picture. Am I making things too complicated? How can I simplify? Am I spending too much time on small details that are not significant and how can I better budget my time?
#EdutopiaChat
Absolutely! We covered a different topic each month around things like student engagement, teacher evaulations, curriculum, etc. this format kept things positive and meaningful #EdutopiaChat
A5 Ask for it! You'd be surprised when you are open and honest with colleagues and admin what support you might get. But I know that can be scary and a bit risky...but also SO necessary. #EdutopiaChat

A5. Seek out available revenues of support. Good mentor. Guidance in maintaining a healthy balance. Daily reflection. Read. Seek to grow. Always strive to grow. #Edutopiachat
A5: Authenticity and openness. Teachers so ofter operate in silos and forget that their struggles are shared throughout the teaching profession #EdutopiaChat
RT mrs_moitoza: edutopia My first year teaching, a voluntary after school program for 1st yr teachers made a world of difference! We supported each other and exchanged ideas in a way that helped me make it through! It’s so important to support our new teachers #EdutopiaChat …
RT teacherforest: A4 in my old school, we would have a time in the morning with the whole faculty where we would share something we are grateful for. Be it big or small, personal or professional. Every share was always met with a pat on the back or a high five #EdutopiaChat …
A5 I have found so much support by engaging in teacher leadership, it has kept me from feeling powerless to the forces that can lead to burnout #EdutopiaChat
RT kaitlyn57718943: A4: Actually giving teachers their planning time. We NEED that interrupted time everyday. There’s so much pressure for technology rich lessons, parent/community contact, and relationship building, but there’s no time to do it all in one day. #EdutopiaChat…
A5 Teaching AND learning are only sustainable when they are infused with personal passion and meaning. Students and teachers do not burn out, they thrive when deeply motivated, inspired, and empowered! #edutopiachat
A5 Look for what can be edited from our practice. Let’s get back to understanding the why and what we are trying to accomplish. #childrenfirst#EdutopiaChat
A5: I make space for other people to do what they need to. Leadership through service, and all that. It finds its way back to me when I need it. #EdutopiaChat
A3: Start by creating time in each day to breathe and do something I enjoy, and in being intentional with recognizing the "you were made for this" moments of being an educator. There is nothing wrong with rejuvenating and getting reinspired! #EdutopiaChat
A5: Sometimes it's about taking risks and not asking for permission to find what works for you. Doing what you know is going to benefit your Ss and you and then sending a follow-up of how it worke is needed instead of asking to do something. #EdutopiaChat
A5: Our school has an established social committee fund that we contribute to at the start of each year. We use these funds for fun giveaways, activities, supplying snacks for faculty meetings, etc. especially for the end of the year. #EdutopiaChat
A5. I ask for help when I need it – that is what mentors, colleagues, and administrators are for. I even ask my students for help and feedback! #EdutopiaChat
A5: Create rapport with parents, teachers, community members and former students...one person can only do so much, but creating an army of support allows you as the teacher to bring the world in to the classroom to allow your kids to transform tomorrow. #EdutopiaChat
I love that you mention teaching students about self care, too (so important). Plus, when we do this as teachers we model it for kids. :-) #EdutopiaChat
#edutopiachat a3 Stop burnout tonight- cut off work at a certain time, take Sunday off. In future, weigh up if it's you or the job. I quit as it was best weigh up of pros and cons. Now retraining.
A4: Prioritize teacher workloads and give teachers the opportunity to focus on the things that really matter. Before asking teachers to do one more thing, ask: “Is this going to support the teacher or is it going to lead to burnout?” #edutopiachat
A4(1) Last year during a mentor/mentee meeting, we were supposed to talk about teacher self-care... instead we talked about school shootings and I left in tears. Admin: make time (and honor it) during the school year to take care of your teachers #edutopiachat
A5. Researching new (to me) technologies/strategies; participating in positive reflection techniques; access veteran teachers for advice; communicate to fellow teachers about practices, and..... #EdutopiaChat
A5 I do my best to solicit parent volunteers in their home language. I also remind my students they can come help me next year when they're in middle school and on break #EdutopiaChat
@edutopia A5 Look for support wherever you can find it. Only work in a building and a district that supports you and your efforts. Change is scary but making a move in order to prevent burnout is sometimes a necessity #EdutopiaChat
A4. Providing opportunities for teachers and administrators to talk, share pains and joys...laugh together and build each other up #EdutopiaChat#teacherlife
A5. The best support is when one of the students understand something you have taught and you see them teaching it to one of their peers. #edutopiachat
A5: Sometimes people do not see or understand how much people are struggling. Find someone you trust and are comfortable with, and let them know you need support. #edutopiachat
A5 looking at inspirational teachers and reading their work. Finding something new to inject in your classroom and something to also change up the routines you set up for yourself. Variety is the spice of life #EdutopiaChat
A4(2) And hiring just one more 1.0 teacher in my department would help reduce the student and grading load for all. We are stretched thin and don't get to teach any electives that we might find energizing #edutopiachat
A5: Other teachers - not just the same content for help, but other teachers who know the kids, who can help solve problems, and who will listen to you rant, scream, cry, or brag. #judgementfree#EdutopiaChat
A3: Finding a balance. Prioritizing and realizing that there will /always/ be something else on the to do list so I have to come up with a hard deadline for myself and let some things slide until the next day. #EdutopiaChat
A lot of support is offered from our school district on down to administration; good people at my school. When that is not enough, I go looking for that support. #EdutopiaChat

A5: I get my teaching battery recharged by talking w/ my Ss about books we’re reading for fun. They tell@me about what they’re reading, & I do the same. We’ve had some great impromptu book chats, & I always feel recharged after these! #EdutopiaChat
A5. I allow myself to be vulnerable and I lean into my colleagues. When I have a question, problem, moment of self-doubt I tap into my local brain trust. And hopefully, they feel they can do the same to me #EdutopiaChat
A4. It sounds silly, but I’ve never seen the atmosphere of a faculty meeting change faster than when a plate of cookies arrives.
That is to say, we must find ways to say thank you to our colleagues for their time. #EdutopiaChat
A5 coming up with new projects for myself that are reflections of the previous school year. I make it a point that these projects don’t have a timetable and I can work on it whenever I want. No pressure. #EdutopiaChat
A5. I find that I appreciate my work, my time, and my life better when I only spend time on things that go into my emotional/mental/financial funds. The more I say “No,” the more I do what makes me happy more often, and am able to be my best teacher self. #EdutopiaChat
A5. I value knowledge and education. I also believe another world is possible - a world with less inequality, military spending and mass incarceration. Self care is beneficial, but disrupting the status quo is necessary. #EdutopiaChat

Q5. As a leader in the building, I’m a part of the support that should help to keep teaching sustainable for our teachers. The demands aren’t decreasing. Therefore, the support has to increase. Leaders take care of their people. Titles can’t blind us to humanity.#Edutopiachat

A4: Allowing teachers to share their classroom successes and gratitudes regularly, and recognizing that educators do so much more than teach. Teaching can feel like a thankless job at times. Feeling heard and appreciated can be extremely motivating for educators #EdutopiaChat

A5 sometimes I recruit my students to support me in keeping my teaching sustainable by adjusting their expectations, esp around how long it takes to grade things. Sharing w/ them that I spend 30 minutes to give feedback on their paper (x50) is usually an aha moment #edutopiachat
