A1 Leading with data--showing positive correlations in achievement when Ss are acquiring another language to their L1 achievement
A1 I think the relationships I form w/ kids is my best promotion. Also showing them univ. expectations for various degrees.
A1: Pretty timely question since I just proposed a Heritage course to all of my district's APs...they approved it! :D
A1: Step 1, IMO, is to practice the craft as well as you can. Ss and parents want quality.
A1 My kids are my best advocates! They tell other people to take my class. Good relationships are the first step.
Laura Catherine Spanish Iowa
Curious--why a separate course?
A1 I advocate by stating the benefits of and exemplifying SLA with others, esp. Ss. Yes, it's possible and yes, it matters
gracias! Hard to get pacing, curr, sample plans/units/assessments together in 1 week..but part of advocating is hard work
A1 Ss made posters videos and tweeted to encourage lower levels to continue on in Spanish
A1 class blog with weekly activities and photos, share posts with admin to add to school facebook page
A1: Seems that Ss have a LOT of options to put their time and attention, in other depts and within our dept.
A1: I aim to wow & amaze at our Open House. Student volunteers scream "Bonjour!" at people while wearing mustaches, with video.
Didn't February used to be a big advocacy month for ?
A1: design for linguistic and cultural proficiency and then make that visible to your community. Best advocacy.
A1 Lots of talk about what they'll learn next year. I try to lead with the assumption that they'll be in the program for 4 yrs.
Natalia, HS French, WI Checking in late, will be in and out tonight
Well, I am sure it will be worth it. Heritage Speakers have such different needs. More like a reading class in Spanish!
A1: producing highly proficient users of language is the best kind of advocacy.
A1 it's tough. College requirements seem to get the best results unfortunately
Wasn't sure about since we are not 1:1 but using it to house several diff practice resources for each unit is perfect!
A1 Hallway decorations, whole-school events, unique trips
A1 what are the best ways you've found to be visible to the community?
A1 It's about education. We educate students but also their parents, other teachers, and community leaders.
A1 Show results, engagement in classes, enrollment . Also went into 5th gd clss to demonstrate and recruit for MS
I do this too! I make a big deal about how sad I am when they don't register for next year.
A1: learned from long time ago that we need to advocate when times are good. don't wait until they are bad.
Heritage have a unique set of needs, many are proficient in list/speak but need help read/write and w/ register
A1: Not quite same, but to get sts to buy into TL use, lots of training is needed to make them believe it is possible.
A1) table at 8th grade open house and get current students involved talking to prospective students and parents (last night!)
A1 sometimes contacting the local news to make a big deal out of X in your program works!
They won't let people pass unless they come into my room! I never told them to do that!
A1) I'm the only lang my school offers, but I took the plunge & started teaching AP this year. I want sustainability.
A1 Any advice on how to combat sts leaving bc they are concerned abt their GPA during Junior yr?
A1 Striving to have engaged and proficent ss + activites outside the classroom + a program blog for parents and admins.
Making their words visible through events I host on campus that invite the community in &by sharing their work out w/social media
A1- Definitely an area I need to improve upon. The kids are great spokespeople but a c
A1: I send parent newsletters...the more the community gets involved the easier it is to promote
Yes! both as advocacy for OUR discipline and for our particular corner (lang, level, etc.) https://t.co/5aDs3brqzY
A1: producing highly proficient users of language is the best kind of advocacy.
A1: my state has made it tough for the teaching profession so hard to recruit students
A1: guarantee S success right away to hook them. Let's them see that new languages don't have to be terrifying.
Hola , sorry I'm late! In between Nyquil doses. Me, my advocacy program is bragging as muc as possible
Hola , sorry I'm late! In between Nyquil doses. Me, my advocacy program is bragging as muc as possible
A1: language teachers do amazing things, but so often we forget to share and brag on ourselves. don't be shy. let the world know!
On the first question? If so, My upper level sts come to 8th grade nite. They sell it. & I run a PP with exchange pics on it
A1 I have had students waver on concerns over GPA as well; I tell them colleges look at more than GPA
A1 I am very flexible and will allow sts to skip level based on ability if they have a schedule conflict.
A1: I started a partnership with a middle school without L2 teachers to try to get kids interested in teaching
A1: Invite your admin into the room as often as possible!
A1 GPAs are a dime a dozen. It's experiences that matter in this century.
I keep kids active with everything they can experience: tv, radio, games, websites. Then they go chit chat about all they do& love
I want to convince my 2s and 3s take the AAPPL test to show off
A1 - Last class students left today saying "j'adore le français" - students happy with their learning will continue to learn.
A1- Definitely an area I need to improve upon. The kids are great spokespeople. Need to focus on promoting upper levels.
A1 I get a lot "I like you as a T, but I wish you taught something else." Um, thanks?
YES! I tell Ss that 4 years vs 2 years could be the difference b/w them & acceptance of a different applicant to univ.
also partner with community. Do a student-led language event at the library for example.
A1: I also aim to get into the school newsletter or town paper at least once a year.
Try to tell it to their parents who (most likely) are the driving force of these decisions.
A1: A really good vertical alignment. Can I say MERCI
Please come say that to my students in my new school. Most academically competitive kids in world!
A1 Need to do some more public posting of what kids do, media release issues make it tricky sometimes
oh my oh my don't get me started. We have to keep fighting...it can't get much worse??? I hope?!
I also get Ss who do level 1 and/or 2 in MS but retake in HS for ¨easy A¨
A2: when I taught MS I shamelessly plugged our study abroad trip to the rising sixth-graders
get school counselor involved- our parents would believe anything counselor said about how colleges choose
Realize that some of the most important learning happens in MS when students are not afraid to talk and participate.
A1 Also I think our Spanish Club Fiesta fundraiser might get the word out about what we're doing
GIRL, mine too! Stakes are SO HIGH for them, or so they think.
don't be shy. No one else is advocating the way you can. So if doing something awesome, invite school board, media
A1: Sharing videos and photos on school website plus student's enthusiasm for shared experiences in class is positive advocacy:)
A1: I do "Adopt an Escargot" and my 3s have to go introduce their snail to other teachers and administrators. It is a blast!
A1 Oh, but I personally advocate for more language choices w/ physical Ts. Spanish is it here and smaller schools in area have más
engaged, happy learners are the best recruiters! They tell their friends what they are missing.
do you perchance have an example of such a newsletter?
A2: now I market that we are a liberal arts degree that will get you a job right away!
I remember I had advocates for life after inviting parents to bring preschoolers to show off at JCPS WL showcase
I have DOE, school board, PTSA, media coming to see class do a in French. Strategic advocacy
Totally agree! If they really love a class or teacher, other people are going to know about it.
A1 I HATE that promoting our programs often means competing against each other
A1: now I just market to students that we are a liberal arts degree that will get you a job right after graduation
Just came back from our 7th gr one w/my child & our ppt & experienced it. Now I see changes it needs!
A1: We promote FL throughout the school during FL week, honors soc kids do trivia at lunch, photo booths, day of no English...
Graduated grading scale + AAPPL rubrics has made a lot of kds feel like they could succeed this year! https://t.co/1Q9Nc5wwtS
A1: guarantee S success right away to hook them. Let's them see that new languages don't have to be terrifying.
A1: Positive relationships with parents is also a huge thing! I love my "repeat customers" (siblings of students I have).
Hmm I really need to post it on my blog. Got the idea from though and I know she's posted templates!
that tweet warms my heart. thank you for saying that.
THIS--> WORST conf session I ever went to was complain fest by French teachers over losing Ss to Spanish https://t.co/MXmJ7Y9dlD
A1 I HATE that promoting our programs often means competing against each other
I miss when I had administrator rights on the school FB :( Could brag a lot more that way
Natalia! That is exactly what my French teacher did for me that impacted me so much 20 years ago!
On the road now for long commute from global summit so msg me if you want advocacy ideas. This is something I am passionate about!
Thank you for saying this! https://t.co/5TirDFPNbG
A1 I HATE that promoting our programs often means competing against each other
HEAR ME NOW AND BELIEVE ME LATER!! https://t.co/Al8CHqLh5r
A1 GPAs are a dime a dozen. It's experiences that matter in this century.
A favorite S & I made the news for Skyping her into class from the hospital. Powerful accidental advocacy https://t.co/Kubge3Xlb4
don't be shy. No one else is advocating the way you can. So if doing something awesome, invite school board, media
I got over it. :-) The community needs to see the powerful work our students are doing.
A1: At first, I was fighting to get more kids in to my classes. Now, I am not as concerned with getting kids in but keeping them!
At least there is competition. French is only offered online and guidance always pushes Spanish.
A minute or two more on Q1 and we'll be on Q2
Jessica- HS Spanish- from KY checking in late!
A1 In elementary programs need to show it is learning and not just exposure. Pictures and invite parents for special programs.
I NEVER allow sts to say that 1 lang is better than other. Learning lang=value. Unite, not compete!
A1 Also, sign up more-than-needed # of chaperones to show parents how hard we work and how well we teach
A1: Do what you do for all kids. My biggest advocates are my Special Education colleagues! Those kids succeed in my room!
I'm a little different! I try 2 empower students to push for the language they love & suggest resources https://t.co/2QSYjU6gd6
Try to tell it to their parents who (most likely) are the driving force of these decisions.
retention of students is always a concern for high school teachers too. We hope that can reward students.
A1 make a big deal out of why their passions require L2: Police need it. Medical needs it. Business needs it. Dog groomers too.
same here, BUT there is still competition among teachers
or my fav, "easier" than another
you are the queen of advocacy! I bow to you and your amazing ideas.
Our ever quotable moderator! Bam! https://t.co/jlLoUaQ9oX
A1 GPAs are a dime a dozen. It's experiences that matter in this century.
A1 Always suggesting stories for scum newspaper
I like to tell stories about how I used it in my retail jobs in HS/college (even a little proficiency helps!)
Good ? Some of mine just said they would take lvl4 only if I could promise a B+
A2 Brain breaks are the BEST for physical movement!!
A1- We do fun field trips to DC that we do with our upper levels.
Hello ! I teach Core French 6-12 (except Gr11)' and Frimm 1-5, 6-10 in BC. Looks like an interesting topic!
I do not look at it this way. I am the only Fr tchr, I MAKE the program (or not), it's on ME, not kids or other tchrs
I tell them about a guy I know who stole clients from a native speaker with just Novice Mid skill!
a2 I gesture just about everything with my learners
oops I meant SCHOOL newspaper.
one of my Ss got $1/hr raise in HS at pet store because of his NH skill.
A2 Great ? for my hubby-he's an elementary PE T at a Dual Language immersion school in our district. This happens quite often!
Yes! Find great info from FBI & gov't agencies on necessity for L2+ training https://t.co/VMomLU2uIv
A1 make a big deal out of why their passions require L2: Police need it. Medical needs it. Business needs it. Dog groomers too.
A2: just attended outstanding pres at actfl about kin esthetic activities using com modes. Awesome!
In fairness, Ts whose languages have dwindling numbers feel understandably saddened/threatened.
A2 sometimes we have verbarobics--I put on some dance music, call out verb, they do the action in time until next call out :)
do they learn/do the gestures too?
A2: Playing games and creating gestures for vocab allow for physical activity in language. AIM is a great resource for the latter.
A2: we played Four Corners today to get some physical movement in my workshop.
My schl offrs 5! langs. Hard not to compete. Teaching Latin I have to try and recruit. But no need to badmouth, just sell yr prgrm
A2 I found some French "Just dance" routines on YT and man have we had fun with those!
A2 music and movement! Get your kids to dance and sing along to music in TL. It's the best!
A2 As simple as stand up, find a different partner across the room, NOT at your table.
A2: has Ss randomly switch chairs after he yells "Cambia" command. More difficult w/desks
started a stand & gesture: [I am, I have, I want] brain break a bit ago - it's a winner! will blog a video https://t.co/32SW63q2hJ
a2 I gesture just about everything with my learners
A2 Learning a flashmob dance from a TL video is a fun 5-minute daily lead-up to our whole school French Fête (A1!).
Neat! We just started Dual lang in my county so no high schoolers that have been through immersion, yet
A2: bicycle chain, inside/outside circles are other ways to get learners up and out of their seats.
A1 1 more thing. Don't be afraid of "big ideas". Think through & you can pull it off. I've surprised myself (Guinness Record?!)
it is true. Only two of us could communicate with the Hispanic customers
A2: running dictation a huge hit this year. Especially for my class of 20 boys (6 girls!). has great explanation
Bicycle chain? Can you explain this?
A2: transitions, changing partners, movable seating, standing...
A2) I like to do encuestas - where we get up and have to ask/answer ?s to diff people in the room.
A2: Simón Dice, skits, games that involve movements, having students change their partners during an activity, so many options!
A2:Split handouts in 1/2,get 2 ss to volunteer to hold, rest of ss stand, go to either & give him/her compliment in TL to get paper
A2 always difficult for hs students but I agree that music is a plus and information gap activities where they have to get up.
A2) For novices, I create ? and they just ask/answer. For intermediates, they have to create the ?s. Also, really low prep for me!
A2: brain breaks! My agenda looks like this now-the dot/circles are mov't & everything else is 13 min. https://t.co/ILUP5RMoEy
Sometimes we have "de acuerdo" and "no de acuerdo" sides of the room w/ a series of statements in TL https://t.co/ifjr5dibmf
A2: we played Four Corners today to get some physical movement in my workshop.
A2: We learn a song every year as part of pronunciation work. Great when they have a dance or hand movements!
A2: 4 Corners, Line Activity, Pick a Side Activity, lots of ice breakers turned into TL activities or team builders.
I love this!! I bet it's amazing to see.
is a great curriculum-in-a-box with an emphasis in writing, speaking, listening and gesturing.
I have L4 Spanish T & ELL T co-teaching 2 of 3 sections of L4 where 50% Native/Heritage and 50% non-native.
A2 It's also almost time for our annual Language Festival competition--music and skit teams are always moving!
A2: Take Off, Touch Down: basically a "stand if this is true about you" activity Great for listening!
we learned a Flashmob dance courtesy of and did it at Qdoba - SO FUN
A2: Dance, but sing! That's one of our class rules:)
A2: My students tend to enjoy RELAY RACE with expo marker and white board in which they compete against each other/other classes
A2 group work - have them interact with other students beyond the "ask a partner" where they face another, but actually move.
A2 Extended Learning Area with a whole wall as a giant whiteboard right outside of my classroom, ended up there every other day
A2: use your entire campus. not always possible but I've been part of some amazing lessons in hallways, courtyards, lunchrooms.
A2: Speed-dating/speed friending LOTS of movement.
Maybe I should Moussier Tombola to Au Bon Pain!?
A2: Impromptu Speeches - Give topic, students stand, each person sits when done.
aghh. I meant TPR. Stupid autocorrect.
A2: Good old fashioned TPR is also a favorite
A2: We are 1-to-1 so lots of video creations with partners, in the halls, seat swapping, etc.
A2 we take a lot of surveys (to the point where I bought clipboards)
A2: Conversation Stations - Post topics around room connected to larger topic/task. Sts rotate w/partner and talk about topics
A2 almost every grammar rule has a song. For MS, they tend to beg for songs.
A2 Scavenger hunts! It also gets Ss in other classes talking about what we do
Yes! We walk around campus and I randomly shout "a la derecha!", etc. and later come the blindfolds. https://t.co/bk2vDkg6pD
A2: use your entire campus. not always possible but I've been part of some amazing lessons in hallways, courtyards, lunchrooms.
A2: Running dictation is a class favorite.
GOOSECHASE! There's a photo scavenger hunt app you can use for presentational writing w/ staged photos around campus
A2: we do a lot of stations, and charades is usually one of them
Ooooh! What is it called?
A few more minutes on physical activity and we'll hit Q3!
A2 I feel I am "good" at this in lower levels, not so much with higher levels
merengue, salsa, bachata are favorites. TPRS as well.
bicycle chain or line ups: two rows of students lined up, one is moving one to change partners.
A2: I loved seeing my Spanish teaching colleague do 7 minute stations last week. Mucho movement.
what kind of stations did have going?
A2: Amazing Race Game - 5 chars in front, chair = pts Teams, Give question, team forms answer, 1 person races to chair in front
I have this problem as well. Trying to get more creative with it this semester :\
A2 - If retelling story, have ss break into groups (based on # of characters in story) - retell story and all students get to act
we are "moving" fast tonight. this pun is for
GooseChase can also be good advocacy with the school hashtag and Twitter/Instagram!
1) Reading and Interpersonal 2) Listening to song cloze 3) conjuguemos 4) writing w/ new vocab
A1 and A2 combined, nice! https://t.co/5PCAZ56nBk
A2 Scavenger hunts! It also gets Ss in other classes talking about what we do
Yes! I have to be much more intentional & not make it babyish. Find someone who, who said it etc https://t.co/mSMUS7dFtA
A2 I feel I am "good" at this in lower levels, not so much with higher levels
A2 I also built in a lot of extras like bean bag chairs, bouncing balls to sit on, large standing tables. Activities=simple w/that
A2: Honestly, any sort of stations has them moving around, but like everything, I use in moderation so don't become boring
This sounds like a lot of fun. https://t.co/ndXddE5cZr
Yes! We walk around campus and I randomly shout "a la derecha!", etc. and later come the blindfolds. https://t.co/bk2vDkg6pD
A2: use your entire campus. not always possible but I've been part of some amazing lessons in hallways, courtyards, lunchrooms.
post photos to social media and it gets the community talking!
A2: Musical Jigsaw Puzzles - Cut song lyrics apart, have groups listen an recreate song in order. Maybe song scavenger hunt?
A2 Canasta revuelta: just a simple get up and move to a new spot.
A2 my kinders are loving Un elefante se balanceaba- they are the elephants! :)
A2: with stories do readers theater, have silent actors or do actions while read
And for the SUPERINTENDENT to see...A1.
A2 4 corners, cross sides if..., charades, act it out, lots of authentic games for little kids
Bonsoir ! Diane, French teacher in NJ. First time participating in chat :) (Although I've been following along for a while)
that is a fabulous idea! Gotta incorporate that into my music unit next week.
A2: Another colleague of mine uses FLYSWATTERS on screen for megamovement.
A2: Human Illustrations - Tell or have kids read story, then use devices and pose to illustrate scenes
Bienvenue, chère collègue! Glad to have you with us.
A3 I don't anymore, on to Q4 :)
I love ' contextual twist on flyswatters--not just matching, but TL clues for TL words!
A2 Simple demonstration projects work well to get Ss interacting and promote movement
A2 role play- sts pass through airport checkpoints (tables in rm)for interpersonal assess
A2 also made my own class comp called El decatlon, matches decathlon events close as possible. Ex. Shot put has paper wad toss.
A3 Live and only live, b/c I just don't have it in me to listen to recordings. Should I try & get over this?
tell me more? In PD session we acted out a toaster one time. That kind of thing?
A3: Google voice is quick & easy, Educreations is a fun project, and just recording with an iPad is good for skits/presentations
A3 ss have ipads, voicerecordpro, and posted on google classroom. That is just summative. Formative = walk and listen.
A3: Face to face, 'cause I have smaller classes, Ss self record.
A3: We're blessed in my dist to have lang labs from Stevens Learning in every lang classroom. Shout out to our rep !
A2 greeting games such as toss the ball, seat switch
A3 I love Google voice for presentational b/c I can listen on my phone at my convenience
A3 we use Linguafolio therefore we need to upload evidence. We use Simple Audio Recorder or easier when you're 1-1 school
A3: students record convos, transcribe and reflect
LBJD, tell me more about fly swatters
Don't. But recording is good for formative/reflective speaking activities, IMO.
A2 Yes! doing this soon. Imagine school as a town. Give clues in French. Go "hospital", to "theater", to "restaurant"
A3 Google voice is my go to in the tablet less, microphone less school
A3 Just logged into after a sick day: 101 approval requests (half are writing sample pics though)
A3: they record three times a semester as a requirement
A3) I've tried a few options but many are blocked at school :( So I usually just listen live & use rubrics
I modify to get more sts involved. Print game sheet w/ words. Partner kids, call out words, kids slap w/hands
A2: We played "basura bola" -
A3 We're 1:1 iPads-AudioBoo, Record Feature in Notability, as well as Croak. It --only audio Otherwise, camera app, Swivl app
YES! Very open to having Ss listen to selves/peers. No prob.
A3: Quick Voice (iPad app) is great for presentational speaking. Can e-mail or upload into Google Classroom.
We must do 3 assessed per year. 1 on 1 w/student siting across from you having conversation. Much like ACTFL.
A3 my students love video projects
A3 CLEAR audio-dropbox and conversations. Also 1:1 conversations in class.
right! Thankfully, we have a lot of community places to see outside school windows (was scavenger hunt today actually)
A3: Ss can record audio as choice hmwrk-they use phones, or can call & leave me voicemail via google voice - otherwise it's live.
A3: iPads/iPhones with voicememos (spontaneous speech); videos of conversations; Tellagami, Photospeak, Fotobabble apps for fun
On another hand, recordings are fabulous for collaboration w/class from France!
A3 I have kids record daily conversations about songs, edit the best ones together for portfolios 1x/grading period
works really well to have silent actors while you read or play audio CD of novel. Movement for wigglers, visual for all
A3: Record in Voki with an avatar. Cute class presentation, can also present in a station w small group
A3 record w/phone & share best on prof Ig. Let sts record each other- supportive & celebratory! https://t.co/noCj8EFG0u
The 1st half of the chat I was only getting like 1/10 of the tweets. It's working fine now, tho
AWESOME!!!!!! Rides again! One of many ideas worth the price of admission to https://t.co/8MkrTKxmlj
A3 I have kids record daily conversations about songs, edit the best ones together for portfolios 1x/grading period
A3 I haven't used it much this year, but in the past we've used Flipgrid and google voice. Voicethread isn't bad either
You're sending audio back & forth? We're starting this w/ Padlet btwn classes here for now.
A3: Brandon Brown quiere un Perro by adapted by grade 2. Students were eager to participate 😆 https://t.co/36IyF4NGVO
A3: I've used VoiceThread also. I like it because you can put a picture up for students to describe.
A3: other times- I work w/student question creation & they walk to music & stop. when it does, ask & answer w/random partner
A3 Students can also add extra voice comments on VoiceThread portfolios w/ videos to demonstrate more objectives
I do this a lot. https://t.co/lRxDduoaco
bicycle chain or line ups: two rows of students lined up, one is moving one to change partners.
A3 anyone at elem level- what have you tried? I use my mini IPAD to video tape kiddos
A3 I think I'm in the minority, but IMO Presentational speaking requires an audience besides me. Why record?
Imovie works great too bc u can create picture podcasts
A3 also a great idea is turning their Presentational speaking into an Interpretive listening for other students.
I had students record intro vidos for 's students before setting up penpals!
Agreed...but doesn't recording give you more ability to share with others and widen the audience?
Let's hit our last Q for tonight's quick snapper !
How do you have them record? I've used written text.
it in pairs. Allows more interaction & I can get all 30 done at once LisaShepard2
also great evidence for portfolios or Student Learning Objectives
A3 Although I have had a major shift to for recording on Chromebooks, phones, tablets. Many platformes, 1 feed!
A3) Relatedly, I have an accidental-IPA-I-think? for Sp1 - food words, decorations, and traer/venir. Gonna blog about it
Yes I record everything now that exists and I have to submit evidence of student growth.
I found this far easier and more effective than vocaroo.
A3 gotta say = lifesaver--I don't have to grade it all but ss can record it all, save for later https://t.co/r5BH8L04wV
A3 gotta say = lifesaver--I don't have to grade it all but ss can record it all, save for later https://t.co/k13kUTZARj
A4 the only use I have for translation tools is pronunciation. Convince me otherwise.
that's 30 in one class of 6...
A4 I want to do more with the Google Translate phrasebook. Kids need a quick reference of what they've looked up
A4: first we have to knowledge that they exist end it we use them too
A3 I remember sessions at EdcampGlobal providing tons of resources for this as well. If anyone is into searching, they're online
A4: I tell my students to type their Spanish into Google and see if the English make sense to them
A4 they need to use resources like WordReference and RAE (for Spanish) to apply their knowledge and look up what they don't know.
I think this makes sense, but I also think the students benefit from seeing their impact on listeners.
True, but you could post it somewhere.
A4 My fav strategy lately is letting them use Translate/dictionary for PRACTICE exercises as long as they bold it
A4: Be VERY clear with guidelines. I introduce them to it on Day 1. What's fine what's not, and show them WHY it's mostly not okay
A4: Oohhhh! Someone just posted on iFLT/NTPRS/CI Teaching Facebook that "we translate ideas, not words"
A3: is another great, easy to use app for writing and recording in L2 with
A4: We do a lot of interpersonal, and interpretive on the fly with time crunch. Fluency needs comfort, speed, control.
A4: I also encourage them to change their wordprocessing to the L2
I tried & LOVED it too. Will try w/class from France for commenting next :)
A4: They need to be taught how to use a dictionary first!
A4 -Being honest&open w/ ss about effort over perfection takes pressure off&makes "cheating" not "necessary." Teach responsibility
I have to look up Neo-Latin, how can I begrudge students the same? Showing poor google translations, and various options helps.
I used to teach them how to use old school dictionaries but now show them how to correctly use online instead
For my personal Portuguese project, I needed translate to check my word order
A4: first we have to knowledge that they exist and that we use them too
A4 as long as they use translators/dictionaries to help, ¬ do work for them, it's fine. For adv students, try circumlocution
A4 i show them how bad& easily detectable translators are, using Youtube plus my own activity, followed by T/F survey.
A4 I try to make Word reference their comrade. I model it myself
I check myself with Translate or dictionaries sometimes. It's a skill to practice down the road, when they're ready
I have a colleague who advocates for novices NOT to use dicts or translators bc they don't own enough lang yet.
A4 Blogged my thoughts about Google Translate: The tech that's making us irrelevant and more relevant https://t.co/mF0ZOmanWx
A4: I have moved to most presentational writing as unassisted guided free writes that "show what you know"
“: Quick Voice (iPad app) is great for presentational speaking. Can e-mail or upload into Google Classroom. ”
A4 I try to get students to work from their own words; don't translate - use what you know and I help with what is missing.
Yes! I had to explain this week that (prep.) isn't the French word word for "at."
A4: Dictionaries/translators are GREAT resource AFTER acquisition but LOUSY substitutes for Acquired lang skills.
A4 Create an environment on lower levels where sts don't feel the need to use translation bc everything is in bounds.
THIS. This is why I wait a little to play w/ Translate now instead of breaking out Commandments 1st thing https://t.co/q12pUdtVRr
A4: Dictionaries/translators are GREAT resource AFTER acquisition but LOUSY substitutes for Acquired lang skills.
my prob with these videos is no one tries to translate something 64 times except as a joke
A4 since my ss rarely write at home, I don't really have an issue with misuse of translator
A4) I like to designate if we have to stay 'in bounds' (no dictionary help) or if we can go 'out of bounds'
A4: I created a ws/form that makes Ss fill out all info about the word (mainly for context) -also keeps from look up evrything
Sometimes I tell them they can look up one-word nouns but then they must highlight when they have done this.
A4 we have to stop pretending Google Translate doesn't work
in my class a dictionary is welcome, word reference RAE. Translating parragraphs, not allowed.
Me too. Loving this. And 10-minute fluency counts that we keep in a folder to view progress
Just out of the MRI (brain just dandy) and hoping everyone had a great !!
A4 pt 2 then train Ss on https://t.co/3L7ookqtGB to crosscheck (choose word EngFr then look it up FrEng before using it.)
Only 4 minutes left - what are your takeaways from tonight's quick snapper ?
A4: I do have students produce the writing in class though, because it's just too tempting
YESSSS! Ss should need very little if tasks set up right! Still nice to pick up a few personal choices https://t.co/nUBpmFjZf7
A4 Create an environment on lower levels where sts don't feel the need to use translation bc everything is in bounds.
That's why I wait until they are Novice High-Intermid to intro WRef & explain how 2use it. https://t.co/n2eRzF5zmC

Been there and done that!
It gets more and more accurate, and I've used it in other countries before with success! https://t.co/3aeg46GPAF
A4 we have to stop pretending Google Translate doesn't work
Interesting. Because they don't know the difference between noun/adj etc? (ex: escuela vs escolar)
wish we could type onto the pics though, not just below :(
A4 Definitely! I´m not a dictionary, but I´ll help Ss find what they need and show how to apply it https://t.co/7ilGKhKXi7
A4: They need to be taught how to use a dictionary first!
good point, i heard that from others too. i think a few words is ok, but only to retain &if it isn't overwhelming
I agree. Asked Ss "Would you rather know things or how to find them on Google" All voted for the 1st. https://t.co/v12csn75lf
A4 we have to stop pretending Google Translate doesn't work
TA- I loved the quick snapper. Picked up so many little things to try.
THE key to success! ***CLEAR*** EXPECTATIONS! https://t.co/QEqlC2mqKf
A4) I like to designate if we have to stay 'in bounds' (no dictionary help) or if we can go 'out of bounds'
A4 teach kids how to use dict, wordreference etc. I love dictionaries, kids cn learn how to use them properly w guidance
A4 Related listening and reading provide vocabulary and structures to aid in output. Encourage students to model input.
Yes, all important writing is done in class where I am able to monitor & help/clarify/suggest when needed.
exactly. They know it exists anyway, so we might as well help them figure out the when & how
TA: The randomness suited me!
TA: forever and always, I love being a part of this community.
MIssed tonight's chat due to Valentine's Day Cards!
A4 funny but porn filters at school "catch" anyone who tries to look up What, such & other words on wordreference...😏
