A: I spoke to our school resource officer about T’s w/ guns in the classroom. He said that it creates more danger for everyone. It’s too complicated to find an active shooter, but now more people having guns would complicate things #bfc530

There’s not a unified message of the purpose of school by adults so I definitely don’t think the kids have one. Most would say it’s to graduate and go to college or get a job. #bfc530
In an older version of the intro to our book, Jonathan and I discussed how books characterize how kids in the target age range feel about school: elementary is “weird” or “sideways,” middle school is “the worst,” and high school is all about survival.

Merit pay doesn’t work with our ACTUAL jobs. Why would dangling an incentive pay carrot entice me to do something I’m not qualified for and opposed to? I’ve gone without new clothes and new shoes and vacations for decades to be a teacher. No bonus for me. Nope.

I’m not 💯 anti gun, I have a healthy respect for them, I just believe there can be alternatives to arming a teacher. I think our country is sad and frustrated with everything that’s happened and we are emotionally answering logical questions. #bfc530

No, no, no. I think the #ArmMeWith movement is showing how many other things we need to do to truly make an impact. Arming teachers would be a disaster and I would have to leave education because I would not feel safe in a school with that many guns. #bfc530

On an excursion a student shouted something to a member of public who came after him.
But train door shut and he was safe.
S said that's OK teacher would have protected me.
But the person would have had to have hurt the S before I intervened. #bfc530

I've done this, and 95% of them say "To get good grades." Doing that poll completely changed me and my teaching career, because that answer devastated me. It set me on a path to change everything. #bfc530

Sadly, yes. Our school has two and a half years of seminar classes that are all about #SEL and how to advocate for yourself and get to your goals, and still many of them can’t see a better future or see themselves as failures because of things happening in society today. #bfc530

Fun Fact: When I was in college, I tried out for it when it first started. Had to sell a pencil. I bombed big time! lol Looking back, it makes me laugh that it could have been my path! haha @kathyiwanicki
My school has a full time social worker. + part time nurse. + part time psychologist.
The Ss keep them very busy! They use the services on offer. Not all. But many.

You hit the nail on the head. All of the solutions being offered are only PART of the overall solution, and the overall solution is a moving target that will constantly change. If there was a perfect answer, it would have already been implemented. #bfc530
I ask my Ss this Q three times during the year. Mid-way & in June, most speak of “learning 2 learn”, “tooling selves w/ skill sets to PS in life and be engaged in world”. B/c of increasing cohesion across grades, Ss already seem to believe this in Sept😁 #K-12exitoutcomes #bfc530
Your job is not to talk at kids... grade them and close the book on a student who got a "D" or "F". Your job is to TEACH... not simply assign grades. If the student isn't learning... teach differently. "We must teach the students we have, not the students we wished we had."

What is the purpose of school? My students responded...to educate children, to learn so that they can have a better future, to learn, to learn something new, and to gain knowledge. #bfc530
