Using Visible Thinking Strategies in the Classroom; An article for teachers and principals! https://t.co/0nYGUiMqiR
NOW JOIN Topic: Do weak disciplinarians make poor teachers or do kids act out more as a result of poor teaching?
Hi everyone, future teacher here. This is my first !
Do weak disciplinarians make poor teachers or do kids act out more as a result of poor teaching? topic for tonight
Today's Topic: Do weak disciplinarians make poor teachers or do kids act out more as a result of poor teaching? Discuss!
Hi Everyone! Kathy from CT Happy to be here!
Kids act out because they see through BS, know when they're work has no value & know that they aren't valued...
I have seen teachers with bad attitudes for students instigate bad behavior. Of course, if you treat me poorly I might do the same.
TED_ED: To learn more about the official TED guide to public speaking, check out this link: https://t.co/l3yC4j0MJG
Looking forward to taking part in . Hey everyone!
Busy or annoyed?: I love reading leadership articles and books, and no matter how many t... https://t.co/MmTLhpDB55 via
And sometimes kids are ornery too. That doesn't mean they are bad, just human.
hashtag is currently trending with lots of negativity. Sure there are plenty of connected ts that can change that
Also, sometimes when kids "act up" it's not behavior at all but being a self-advocate. Teacher as disciplinarian 1st is 💩
Good evening everyone, Matt from IL joining
Good evening Michelle... welcome to
Sometimes I wonder if acting out has to do with expectations, whether high or low...
In progress Topic: Do weak disciplinarians make poor teachers or do kids act out more as a result of poor teaching?
The more you require your students to memorize in math the less math your students are actually doing.
Truthfully, most kids behave well most of the time. Considering the problems schools have it is pretty amazing.
If students are approached abrasively, they will more inclined to react poorly.
Grid evening William! welcome to
An easy out is to say students engaged in a thoughtful lesson have less of an interest in engaging in trouble.
I think classroom management is very important. Once I get that under control we can do great things! https://t.co/gzSn45GSMm
In progress Topic: Do weak disciplinarians make poor teachers or do kids act out more as a result of poor teaching?
I think that providing context for lessons, clear outcomes, and energy in general can bring a culture of engagement.
or from those students who are behind & don't understand the instruction, so they act out to "protect" themselves..
Thanks Dylan ... welcome to
In some cases S behavior are indications of a need for further assistance, but engaging instruction should limit behavior issues
I think it isn't an or situation. Both instances are guilty of the result.
Good question Crystal,,,, welcome to
Just joining ! I'm a sophomore PreK-4 El. Ed major at Grove City College!
That is very true. Students need to feel appreciated! :)
definitely goes hand in hand. The "good" teachers recognize this and work on solutions.
is that T to S or S to T or S of themselves?
JOIN Topic: Do weak disciplinarians make poor teachers or do kids act out more as a result of poor teaching?
I think its all about your relationship with the students, build trust to reduce "acting out." Get to the root of the problem.
When the engagement isn't there, there are more opportunities for tension between the teacher and class.
Self advocate... nice! welcome to
I'm Claire from Grove City studying Middle Level Ed! Hello
Creating a warm, welcoming culture definitely helps to curb behavioral issues
Ready for my 2nd official chat 💪🏻
maybe good teaching and effective discipline both rely on mutual respect!
Definitely believe it to be a mix of both! Ss need clear expectations & consequences that MATCH the infraction.
Is hard to follow tonight or is it me?
discipline means to teach, sometimes people confuse punishment with discipline :)
Not sure the relationship is as binary as tonight's topic/question would suggest.
Flashcards and redundant worksheets are the reason why most hate math. Sadly neither of these are actually mathematical
Topic: Do weak disciplinarians make poor teachers or do kids act out more as a result of poor teaching?
Jeremey HS science. Nothing beats discipline issues like engaged Ss. Must begin with trust and relationships
I would agree but I feel this goes deeper. Strong instruction is built on relationships and learning about S
. I would consider modeling and caring effective ways to discipline
Also if Ss are distanced from having voice and choice they are more likely not to be contributors.
excited to learn from everyone
Discipline and Management are actually 2 separate issues. I would say that management and engagement are most important
You nailed it. How many times do kids get in trouble for expressing opinions?
A good teacher will know how to appropriately discipline their students so it's honestly a combination. Kids will be kids.
Some Ss are dealing w/ things we can even imagine.. they act out, but not always intentionally.
Hi . Excited to join you for the first time.
me either, of course I've had to learn that through lots of years of experience :)
Ha, infraction...is that a math problem? welcome to
A well-managed classroom involves a culture of trust and building relationships - and then leads to engagement.
Tchrs need a CLEAR DEFINITION of .T needs to be firm, fair, consistent with expectations and same with .
Indeed, climate matters...
I think so much has to do with relevance without that boredom then disruption is sure to follow
DISCIPLINE necessitates respect for the person being disciplined.
What if it has nothing to do with the teacher(s) and everything to do with what's offered? Cutting music, wood shop, arts, PE, etc.
too much noise in the stream?
it has been my experience that many times the most poorly behaved Ss, when treated with care and compassion, change!
POORLY DESIGNED LESSONs and discipline issues: Is there a relationship?
great discussion topic tonight! Happy to be here sharing w/ ya'll. :)
Strongly related! Poor teaching loses respect as well as weak discipline.
My dog barks once when I ask her "1×1". Does she know math? Is the student, memorizing flashcards, practicing math?
I agree! Having voice makes students feel like they matter.
IS YOUR SCHOOL a haven where children are protected from temptation and bad influences?
Yes! Very hard to follow.
ALL students deserve equal rights in the manner they are treated at school.
Teachers need to hold ALL students to high expectations and give them the support to meet these.
As I sit reading I wonder if we do a disservice by separating teaching from discipline...discipline should result in adult teaching
My 3 yr experience working in urban school districts has taught me that the majority of the acting out stems from issues at home 😔
Interesting question; I’ve seen it both ways.
Even the best teacher (and disciplinarian!) works within a system that largely suppresess kids' naturally active, curious spirits.
How teacher REROUTES behavior is important. Sometimes tchr confuses motivation issues with mishavior.
Exactly. Putting time into lessons, and showing passion about actually teaching students shows respect to them.
Cheers to sharing the best resources! Kudos to your edcredible founding team!
agreed - also give those kiddos a chance 2 b recognized when they
improve...4 example, screaming 3 times instead of 10
It is important that students feel like they make worthwhile contributions to class:)
I often advise new tchrs to handle their own discipline problems. Too often Admins view a new tchr w/many referrals as a weak tchr.
They are often times some of the most intelligent as well.
So are we really talking discipline here or do we mean punishment?
this is a good point! I think a student will be more willing to participate if they feel comfortable in their classroom
Where does engagement fall in this topic? To me it can be an underlying reason why behaviors happen. https://t.co/5158JKu5vs
JOIN Topic: Do weak disciplinarians make poor teachers or do kids act out more as a result of poor teaching?
Therefore it is hard to be a disciplinarian to students who don't know structure none the less discipline
I think so, If lessons don't reach students they have more time for poor behavior choices.
Maybe kids "act out" because they're bored, and maybe they're bored because education is way too predictable.
definitely! And when that happens I own it, reflect, and make it better next time!
Those Ss need opportunities 2 be seen 4 the good attempts they make, not always such negative (esp those tough kiddos!)
Teachers should focus on creating engaging lessons. Leave discipline to admins. No Ts should need to identify as disciplinarian.
. It took time to understand not to own all Ss behaviors. Relationships first then built trust and access Ss interests
: 'Lesson plans should reflect what kids need to learn, not what teachers want to teach... via ' …
that's unfortunate, T should feel open to working with admin to foster their continual growth
I agree! If you set expectations high, your students will work with you to meet them
The key is to develop strong relationships with Ss. Make time to get to know each child as individual
However, being a good teacher who builds a rapport with their students DOES significantly decrease acting out
. Hi Leonie Hastings NZ sneaking in. IMO both. When a T cant control a class Ss play up eg Relievers. Also engage motivate Ss so busy
so...how to insure lesson is well designed?
Love this: "...there's a certain beauty that comes from fear." https://t.co/KEwcnNUTDn
I think there's a certain beauty that comes from the fear.
Since stopping HW, my Ss are working HARDER (personal goals) & getting MORE Math done than when I gave HW!
Professional development focus on artistry in teaching - looking for presenter to talk STEAM or math or science - ideas?
Teachers should manage student oriented classrooms and lessons.
I'm all about getting kids to be respectful, which is what most mean by discipline in the classroom. I'm not so big into punishment
Well designed lessons have clear meaningful goals and multiple pathways to reach these.
Kids do tend to target teachers they feel are weak or vulnerable.
Sometimes new Ts benefit from new strategies. How many T Ed programs equip new Ts with enough skill in this arena?
Power Grabbers/attention seekers seek to win control of the invisible baton (power) that tchrs possess.
One theory: Maybe kids "act out" because we started cutting wood shop in the 90s.
I think that could create mistrust. In my opinion its best to try and handle it, if possible.
What even is this topic? How does this advance the conversation about supporting all students?
It's true! Some kiddos just are so impulsive. It's little victories that need to be celebrated... :)
I’ve seen some weak disciplinarians who have terrific lessons but delivery is impeded by poor management.
yes! 3 years in still worried about how students misbehaviors reflect on me when I know they act same w/ veteran tchrs
Seeing oneself as a 'Disciplinarian', strong or weak, is where the problem starts
. no doubt we are all more wiggly without physical activities at school. Teachers too, I really miss recess.
It's important to give Ss space to move, speak up, engage--that's often a busy classroom.
Agreed. Also u are building a relationship w/said Ss. That needs 2happen w/o outside influence sometimes https://t.co/ug29bx07vP
I often advise new tchrs to handle their own discipline problems. Too often Admins view a new tchr w/many referrals as a weak tchr.
you have to consider not only the needs of students but their interests! It goes beyond just content
What came 1st: chicken or the egg? Classrm management and instruction are INTERTWINED.
I couldn't disagree more. Kids want to feel safe and respected. "Targeting" is a function of that need not being met.
Getting Ts to reflect upon the root cause of management problems in their classrooms...
I agree but as a math teacher I have to admit that there is still a time and place for worksheets
You are right and I feel few do.
Quality teaching underpinned by mutual respect, care & humour negates need 4 "disciplinarian"
with the large amounts of research supporting recess, what admin can argue against it?
A1 Going beyond professional dev. & make time for personal dev. Exercise, read, travel... bloom & grow
I see it all the same..classroom management is instruction, being prepared, "discipline" etc
Boredom is one reason students misbehave, not the only reason - could also be confusion, problems at home, substance abuse, etc.
Poor lessons almost always lead to disruptive behaviors. If we don’t engage students, they will engage themselves in something else.
Yet once we know Ss, pointed content can be covered deeper.
When I'm guiding the class to more productive states, I don't think of myself as a disciplinarian, I see myself as a skilled leader.
Tchrs need a CLEAR DEFINITION which they teach/sell to students/parents. Makes for successful class.
Do you never give homework, or just specific days of the week? We do no homework Wednesdays. Everyone loves it.
For sure, poor presentation skills can contribute to the problem.
I think T and S relationships are key. But I have found it is these students who seem to act out more.
i think this is exactly why Ts need to be quick to listen and learn about our Ss and slow to punish or even "discipline"
. I have seen it happen time and time again on the secondary level.
My students create classroom expectations. Rules come from those above. I prefer expectations
How do you DEFINE discipline/misbehavior? What does it LOOK like? How do you respond to it?
? Ready for some on surviving the end? Find them here on w/me and (in spirit)
Tyler identified four main variables--occupation, education, income, and family support programs in the world.
As an effective , to quote Steve , or at the very least Aaron , "I play the orchestra"
Not following the expectations of the classroom.
definitely agree! Between undergrad & grad school never had classroom management course. Would have loved it
starting in 40min. Don’t miss it!
In my experiences as a student, I have had teachers with weak lessons, resulting in a lack of engagement and interest.
Very true. I believe relationship building is key to getting through to students. https://t.co/HK5DnzKL6i
I think T and S relationships are key. But I have found it is these students who seem to act out more.
Seems we've somehow been circumventing sound ed research since the Coleman Report came out 50 years ago.
fantastic point that does not receive enough attention
In many cases the two aren't related at all. Some of the most "strict" teachers can have a class full of kids who act out
I think that keeping goals in front of us, rationale for learning events, voice, and choice help a lot.
true! The more you get to know students, the more you can gear it towards them.
It also helps to cultivate student leaders (facilitators, timekeepers, etc) to help create an excellent classroom culture.
Ruth Charney's Responsive Classroom Book, Teaching Children to Care is Great resource.
behaviour may be influenced by a myriad of factors, some from within the classroom, some from without.
Research indicates children have a natural inclination towards positive social interaction. Emotional needs not met lead to problems
Definitely the latter; classroom management can be taught, so "weak disciplinarian" is temporary anyway https://t.co/qt4VuZYmOE
Today's Topic: Do weak disciplinarians make poor teachers or do kids act out more as a result of poor teaching? Discuss!
A Stu is belligerent, insubordinate when you ask him to stop talking during the lesson. How should you respond? Whose problem is it?
and don't forget new! Students like to test the limits of new teachers to see what they can and can't get away with
Thank you for hooking me up with the new tech! Definitely a classroom gamechanger!
Patience, understanding, communication, and rapport can develop when Ts work with Ss one-on-one.
Oh, the dichotomy between engagement and control... *sigh*
- I want Ts to try handling discipline on their own 1st, then ask for advice - Happy to support if needed!
Good teaching/learning choreography creates little issue with behavior
Agree! As a sub and now an undergrad, I would love some insight on classroom management!
Sometimes those kids see it as "fun" to ruffle some feathers and get that teacher annoyed, like it's a game!
yup, stuff happens and they don't always know how to deal with it appropriately.
When sts disengage from a T, just give up, then T is vulnerable because T hasn’t taken time to build a safe community
Punishment will not help.
although discipline is part of the job - being a disciplinarian is not the reason to be a teacher
Yes when the class belongs to all, everyone chip in and helps.
seems like a good book for K-8 teachers. Any secondary (9-12) recommendations?
For sure. It really helps build rapport with students.
also act with unclear expectations/tasks. Provide clear instructions & clear resources (e.g. ask a friend, , etc.)
Love to say to Ss, "Why do you think that's happening?" Leads to good conversation.
yup, you monitor what you care about
Or "What do you think I should do since. . . ." They're typically reasonable.
I agree completely! That is terrible foundation for a career in teaching. Discipline is only one aspect https://t.co/eMjNXIWYTT
although discipline is part of the job - being a disciplinarian is not the reason to be a teacher
it sounds basic, but I've seen a lot of teachers who you can tell are not authentic in their approach to students. 1/2
I feel you! I was a sub for 2 years, now a sub/teacher. Still trying to figure it out. Especially w/ middle & high school
Talk to your Ss and ask them whats going on? Just taking time to talk can go a long way in creating a safe, respectful classroom.
So true, sometimes children simply don't know what's expected.
2/2 If students know you're faking it, why would they be interested? Obviously there are student exceptions, sometimes.
Is a teacher weak on discipline a poor teacher?
if their lack of management hinders student learning...yes.
Instead of “disciplining” students, cultivate effective classroom management skills & build relationships w/kids.
Learn from yesterday, live for today, hope for tomorrow. The most important thing is to not stop questioning
Is a teacher weak on discipline trainable?
Effective learning strategies lead to results that are measurable.
I think so. We can all become better at doing things, can't we?
. Agree! Authenticity is the key to engagement. Kids can/will spot a phony from a mile away and immediately disengage.
Just jumping in, but I was definitely trained on discipline! I had a HORRIBLE first yr but have lrnd so much in 15 yrs
When I accepted this view of a child's nature, It was no longer about me and feeling disrespected.
If tchr cannot manage behavior/misbehavior instruction is limited. It's like an omelette. Scrambled together.
I believe with the right coaching and mentoring, yes. Making sure it is win-win discipline is key in
definitely! But they need guidance & feedback. Mostly only suggestions I get are give detention or write students up
And whose fault is that if they don't understand?
Do you have any advice for new teachers on becoming better with classroom discipline?
I think that kids act out for thousands of reasons, poor teaching is just one of many.
To accommodate teachers weak in discipline do admins schedule class lists accordingly placing more difficult kids to stronger tchrs?
It became about empathy and solving the problem with the student. Co-contructing solutions.
I think so, but I think it’s easier to coach up on content knowledge than to develop the skills to manage a classroom.
curious (as newer teacher) to find out what your 1st year taught you/what you learned over the past 15 years?
I start every lesson with WHAT we're learning & WHY we're learning it. It has to be meaningful! No busywork. Ever.
Middle school is hormone heaven/hell. LOL. High schoolers I found can be reasoned with.
new teachers usually get problem Ss other teachers don't want.
Had GREAT mentors to watch, as well as books. Have had great success with Love and Logic, also Responsive Classroom
To be honest, I worry about the kids that don't occasionally rock the boat. Passivity isn't always the thing we want from students.
- Teaching ClassManagement is tough - it's either natural or is put in place one strategy at a time with guidance.
Also create a strong community of respect and kindness
I think classroom management is a skill that can be learned & improved upon over time as s teacher-everyday brings new lessons!
Biggest thing is that college taught me nothing about management. Have to learn that in the trenches
if admin has a to orchestrate a schedule where Ss go because a teacher is deemed weak the issue is with admin
Yes but training a teacher on discipline is harder when the discipline issues are related to poor instruction (boredom)
sometimes I think they put all difficult students together and even the strongest teachers still struggle. Not the answer
"Fake it 'til you make it" is such bad advice in this profession.
There’s a big difference between compliance & engagement. (I like a little spirit, too.)
my best advice is to let the kids know you care for them somehow.
that's interesting! Do you feel it's because they think they can get away with more since you're closer with them?
Also, focus on problem solving with students, find the why behind the behavior, help to remedy.
IMO all the kids should rebel against something we are teaching them.
I was afraid you'd say that 😂 and I couldn't agree more! 3 years in to teaching & still overwhelmed sometimes
I’ve certainly seen it happen. “You’re so good w/these kids; we’re giving you a couple more.”
I think any teacher is trainable as long as s/he is open-minded and willing to learn.
and how is that fair to the stronger , or does the weaker teacher any good? & cushion for how long?
Sometimes tchrs are intimidated by Ss. hey "perspire" odorless scents that Ss pick up on .
My friend taught me the 3 and 33 rule--spend at least 3 solid weeks building comm in begng.
Topic: Do weak disciplinarians make poor teachers or do kids act out more as a result of poor teaching? Discuss!
as an admin I would not take that approach. We need to identify why s behavior occurs and support that development
All effective teachers are effective classroom managers.
I appreciate seeing my students grow more each year from Pre-K through 5th grade.
Agreed! All about relationships
Love idea of problem solving WITH students. Sometimes I think I take it too personally & don't ask them why
One of the keys is helping students be aware of others. Awareness is huge part of empathy.
starting in 20min. Don’t miss it!
I have students coming to class on 2 hours of sleep. It's hard for them to work during PE clas
Ultimately, if you don't want to have problems with kids' behavior then you probably shouldn't be teaching. It will happen.
"discipline" can come in many shapes and sizes. It can be more effective to use a compassionate discipline model, work WITH Ss
Show Ss how to fail forward with grace, determination and humor.
I think this can happen, and it's not always a bad thing.
Of course you could say the same thing about adults and working in public as well.
The task of leadership is not to put greatness into people, but to elicit it, for the greatness is there already. -John Buchan
Successful tchrs MELD discipline, motivation, inspiration WITH the CONTENT.
I don't think so. It's not fair to the teacher or the student because it doesn't create an inclusive environment.
I have seen as well, this just drains T without actually supporting S for future successes
is it a disciplinarian issue, or a lack of empathy?
Yes we have big emphasis on social competency & service learning, and I find that's fostered lots of empathy, positivity.
They should do the thinkg, also offer consequences. Hard to remember--but no, it's not about you!
reminds you to consider things from their side. Always a reason behind the behavior.
Absolutely. I have taught both Ss and Higher Ed, and it's similar in both. Goes well when all parties are relaxed!
It is always a good idea to think about the student when you are addressing the behaviors that need to change. They are kids.
if you don't build relationships, I probably shouldn't be teaching
This is critical. I agree.
I also think being intentional about building a community that cares for each other is huge as a way to curb discipline issues.
I know I have gotten some students because 'they have problems with female teachers"
- whether strong or weak at disciplinarian/class management, a teacher who is consistent will get better results.
If kids are engaged in learning they don't act out. Teachers who facilitate learning is what is needed. https://t.co/dGS9M22LTV
Topic: Do weak disciplinarians make poor teachers or do kids act out more as a result of poor teaching? Discuss!
What factors correlate with weak classroom discipline - teaching experience, age, gender, course, subject?
Sometimes UNEMOTIONAL SILENCE wins the day.
I'll let a student take a 5 minute nap. It's amazing how much that can help.
How have you worked on building a community? Any suggestions for a future teacher and coach?
never heard that rule but it definitely makes sense. Sense of belonging is crucial
same here, it makes them more aware and compassionate which impacts how they act.
It is much easier to fit through the eye of a needle than keep all kids engaged all the time.
Curious to learn how 's Basecamp program is doing? Are students learning more than their peers? https://t.co/4fELs1Sadp
I agree! The 'why' is so important. Hunger, lack of sleep, emotions...can all be underlying factors
Start by providing positive ways for Ss to get to know you and one another.
Sometimes when I get stuck on a culture issue, I brainstorm with the Ss how to solve it and usually we find a way to fix it.
Yes, the "power grabbers/attention seekers like to search for tchrs' Achilles Heel.
that 3 helps you focus on teaching for the other 33 weeks! Crucial indeed!
Time for !! Sitting with !!
Saw that ALOT in a very wealthy district I used to work for. T’s could skate by on Direct Instruction only BORING!
Doesn't excuse the behavior, of course, but helps to know next steps in dealing
Students should be asked to help develop classroom culture. We are all learners in and co-creators of the space.
I've had some say to me "I'd never act this way if it was Mr. [teacher's name] class."
it could really be so many things but I think it's essential to establish necessary discipline from the START!
No matter how long you've taught, good teachers are always learning, Ss continue to amaze and challenge.
. I spend no less than a week and revisit when needed doing activities to build class culture
so much better than the "Don't smile until Christmas" rule!
Ts are trainable. It's about adding tools to the kit and in any type of failure there are lessons to be learnt
This is so critical. Without Student buy-in and contributions, the culture ends up feeling fake.
I think it's important to remember that kids have a life outside of our classroom that impacts behavior. What is happening at home?
I am always amazed at how a student's class personality can change from teacher to teacher,
I try to integrate those get to know each other activities w/curriculum goals.
and based on that, I would argue relationships are the biggest factor
When you let students set class "rules," you end up with the same ones you would've implemented (minus their autonomy).
"I don't care how much you know until I know how much you care" MotherTeresa
I think it's important to remove conditional regard from the result of a disciplinary action. A S should always feel cared for.
we do similar with detox week and then build every day with shared community time.
Last year we started by having all Ss and T's create Google collages of their life-then we made movie
I actually enjoy kids more now than ever, even as I love the curriculum less and less. Finally got my priorities right
true! Could go either way I suppose but thinking of it that way makes me feel a little better
Yes! So, we can't be quick to assume they don't care about learning or that they're trying to be "bad" https://t.co/DMd7mn3eSu
I think it's important to remember that kids have a life outside of our classroom that impacts behavior. What is happening at home?
This looks similar to a project we're about to do. Nice pic.
we take mile walk as a community every morning, followed by whole school Metanoia.
Very true! From there we can work on finding solutions. :-)
Very true, but many teachers don’t want to examine why that happens. (May point a finger at themselves.) https://t.co/D6PJuCsv47
I am always amazed at how a student's class personality can change from teacher to teacher,
Speaking of 'expectations',does anyone have a good class contract they think might work with Higher Ed as well?Curious to see others
this morning we met in mentors hip groups. My group played uno together and had dance party :)
Building common purpose! https://t.co/GVI2l7Ettm
we take mile walk as a community every morning, followed by whole school Metanoia.
Build relationships. Know the difference between rules and procedures. Be consistent in enforcement.
. My favorite twitter chat by far! Love !
yes! Spent a lot of time as sub in/out of schools. How do u establish relationship?
I wonder if the happy medium exists. I have never been part of that. BUT I choose the extreme most times.
Yes - always set expectations, routines, etc.
definitely! Being a newer and younger teacher I have to remind myself of that more often
Ts wanted to know how Ss behaved in my class vs. their class. I wondered, how is T 'behaving'? https://t.co/iA2wMpR6fP
I am always amazed at how a student's class personality can change from teacher to teacher,
All of the Above! LOL Perhaps we need to CREATE a new definition for the role.
Kids act differently when they know they are valued. Look them in the eye, really listen to what they say, ask for their input.
This method seems like a good idea. I feel like five minutes is good break, and Ss can get back at it refreshed.
Help ALL students connect your content to their world. Retention will increase when they find that personal connection.
Just wondering if some teachers have it harder than others - given race or reputation or temperament etc.
This can be helpful share, lead to good work, helping Ss, T's
Every student has a story. It's important to know their background and act accordingly.
starting in 10min. Don’t miss it!
I don't think anyone really tries to be bad, or doesn't care about learning. It's relevance.
i would say yes! good teaching does make all the difference but external factors can't be denied
Ss withstructure&procedurewithina classthrive inalearningenvironment. educator fails to establish the cultureoflearning=misbehavior
I think you'll find some T's stand out in every area of teaching including classroom community.
Call on Ss by name. Be curious always - esp. when redirecting them. Praise their effort and ideas. .
invest your time and attention in kids...when I talk to them, it is only them
No doubt! https://t.co/ZafLZMM7pI
Just wondering if some teachers have it harder than others - given race or reputation or temperament etc.
Generally it's in our collaboration that we're strong, but no one is the strongest in all areas.
teaching is a state of mind.
Taking the time to sit with each kid and go over their grade at least once a month changed behaviors.
Con-contruction of expectations is key I think. Shared responsibility.
Tchrs need lessons in using facial expressions/body language as part of teaching curriculum
"Don't smile until November" has clearly not gotten us anywhere.
My school is a restorative Justice school. Circles HELP!
. Especially after sitting in those damned desks in rows all day.
I try to develop relationships with students years before I have them in class. Positive feelings make a huge impact later.
I nvr thought of offering this to a S but what a great idea! Lack of sleep-->issues.

The critical mass of a classroom makeup can have a factor as well depending on the age range of students
Big Thanks out to our Moderators: and Thanks to all who participated.
Give students bigger purpose, show them how they are contributing citizens NOW, not just 1 day in future. Make learning about that!
Catch S off topic studying for a test the next period. Offer 5 minutes of study time at end of class. Focus returns.
It’s happening! is on in 3 minutes!
Ongoing assessment works- Moves motivation from external to internal.
definitely! Or even just a brain break. I've sent many students out for air to calm down
I don't fully disagree! Every Ss has so much potential yet each will be affected by their own background
Always happy to join my co-mods for . Thanks, & all who participated tonight.
