Our chat will focus on the idea that we can lead and make positive change from any position in our school systems. Leadership is not about a title, it is a way of thinking and acting.
Hello and welcome to #LeadLAP@burgess_shelley and I are so excited to have @thezenteacher host today's chat! The Q's will be coming from my account today, but are from Dan. Let's set sail and find our zen!
Time for intros! Tell us who's on board today and where you are sailing in from! I'm Beth, co-author of #LeadLAP and proud principal of #fmsteach. Joining from NJ today...hanging w/the awesome @JayBilly2 & @nbartley6
Good morning #leadlap and @thezenteacher from Barbara, newly-retired school counselor and author of What's Under Your Cape? Super excited to learn from and grow with you this morning!
Inland from SF, was 100 yesterday and supposed to be 102 todayâ30 minutes west to SF is probably more like SD weather where I was for 4 days last week and was beautiful! #leadlap
Good Morning! Lavetta, assistant principal in New Jersey returning from teaching #HigherEd a great group of administrators for the first summer session where classes were on Saturdays. Glad to be back! #LeadLAP

Q1: Self-care is important for everyone. Why might it be particularly important for administrators/educational leaders?
@thezenteacher#leadlap#zenteacher
Try to learn as much as you can about the people you are privileged to serve and do your best win their hearts.
If you first find their hearts, theyâll be glad to give you their hands. #ALLIN#satchat#leadlap#leadupchat#EduGladiators
Thank you, Shelley. I seriously cannot wait for the day when we meet in real life! Now that I'm in my encore career I sense that possibility gaining momentum! #leadlap
A1 I know as though I feel I have the weight of our staff, community, and students on my shoulders. I owe them the responsibility of my very best so I'm most critical of myself and I need time to rest and rebuild to give them my very best each day. #LeadLAP
Thanks Jonathan. Itâs such an honor to serve as a site admin. Iâm super excited and of course feeling all the other emotions too. Itâs in Santa Clara USD. #leadLAP

A1 If you can't look after yourself how can you look after or lead others? Leading is tough so give yourself time to grow, don't put too much pressure on yourself! do as I do not do as I say #leadlap
A1: When I was a Principal, I found that a lack of self-care led me to make some poor leadership decisions that were difficult to recover from. What flight attendants tell us is truth--put on your own mask before assisting others with theirs. #LeadLAP

@thezenteacher#leadlap#zenteacher
A1: I love how @thezenteacher says "Value yourself enough to listen to your mind, body, and spirit.". You have to have balance in order to be your best self! #zenteacher#LeadLAP Radical Self-Care â¤
Q1: Self-care is important for everyone. Why might it be particularly important for administrators/educational leaders?
@thezenteacher#leadlap#zenteacher
A1: Leadership is modeling. If leaders donât do it, then those they lead wonât do it either. Also, leaders get the lions share of the negativity. Without self-care, the work can be overwhelming. #LeadLAP
Q1: Self-care is important for everyone. Why might it be particularly important for administrators/educational leaders?
@thezenteacher#leadlap#zenteacher
A1 - Somedays can be emotionally stressful and heartbreaking. If we don't take care of ourselves, we may not make the right decision or the best decision. #LeadLAP
Q1: Self-care is important for everyone. Why might it be particularly important for administrators/educational leaders?
@thezenteacher#leadlap#zenteacher
Q1: Self-care is important for everyone. Why might it be particularly important for administrators/educational leaders?
@thezenteacher#leadlap#zenteacher
Leaders need high energy and enthusiasm! Low batteries eventually die. Lack of self-care will eventually catch up with the person who neglects it.
#leadlap
Q1: Self-care is important for everyone. Why might it be particularly important for administrators/educational leaders?
@thezenteacher#leadlap#zenteacher
A1 Self-care is super important and especially for those in positions that interact with so many people each day and can sometimes make a zillion decisions every five minutes! We need to reflect and refuel to be energized to do this work passionately each day. #LeadLAP
Hey #LeadLAP! Hate to be missing out today, but Iâm hanging out with some incredible folks at #BadgeSummit in Chicago! Might recognize one of these PIRATEs! #bestweekever Two PIRATEs, One Week?! #tlap
Q1: Self-care is important for everyone. Why might it be particularly important for administrators/educational leaders?
@thezenteacher#leadlap#zenteacher
so true. We all make bad decisions sometimes but if you are not looking after yourself they seem much worse. Being honest about your stress levels is so important. #leadlap
A1: (Jumping in a minute late...hi all!) As a metaphor, when the âcaptain of the shipâ isnât strong enough to keep it afloat, the entire crew is in danger of sinking #LeadLAP
A1: Caregivers are at high risk for Compassion Fatigue, so we must intentionally replenish and restore. We simply cannot overflow where there is no flow! #leadlap
A1: Leadership can be such a lonely place! Self-care is especially important for educational leaders to prevent burnout, keep our sanity, and not be consumed by the âbignessâ of our roles. We have to surround ourselves with strong support systems and good people! #LeadLAP
Q1: Self-care is important for everyone. Why might it be particularly important for administrators/educational leaders?
@thezenteacher#leadlap#zenteacher
A1: One of my favorite take-aways from my #CollaborativeProblemSolving learning is that a "dysregulated person CANNOT regulate another person". You need to be in a good place before you can help others get to their good place. Put on your oxygen mask first... #leadlap
@dbc_inc Our staff will love that this was one of my summer reads. Already planning relevant, meaningful PD for this coming school year. Thank you @RACzyz ! #leadlap#4OCF#choice
A1. I have found as I begin to get tired I donât always think clearly. I make decisions that are not always in the best interest of the students. After breaks my passion and focus are back. Been lucky as school breaks always happen at the perfect time for me. #LeadLAP
A1: As a servant-leader, admins are always serving others. Self-care helps with the process of balance. Balancing filling othersâ cups and filling our own. #leadlap
A1: Education is a calling that people poor their all into. We have the tendency to put put our students, classrooms, schools, families and whatever else is happening at the moment above ourselves. That's why it's so important that we carve out some time to recharge. #leadlap
The modeling piece is so important, Jon! think it is good for our teams to see that we are balanced people taking care of ourselves to and then supporting them to do the same. #LeadLAP
Had to learn the hard way! It's true that you can't give away what you don't have. Hope others don't fall into the trap and try to convince themselves that they can keep going like the energizer bunny without replacing a battery :) #leadlap
yes, this is so true. It is not about me it is about us. As a leader it is about making others shine whilst also demonstrating good practice too. #leadlap

A1: itâs so important to listen to your mind and body! If you donât slow down and take care of yourself #LeadLAP it can lead to mental and physical exhaustion. Beat the Burnout! â¤ď¸â¤ď¸â¤ď¸
A1: The same way Ts need to model behavior and learning for Ss, admin and ed leaders need to model the same thing for Ts. By doing it themselves, it gives Ts reassurance that admin values self-care. @thezenteacher#leadLAP#zenteacher
A1: It is lonely at the top, especially if you are an admin in the area where you live.
Plus, administrators often become caught between district mandates and teacher perceptions. #leadlap
Because there is always something to do we have to be intentional about taking care of ourself too. There should be one item on the daily to-do list that focuses on well-being. #LeadLAP
A1: as leaders we have to model how to handle stress and be in the best mental/emotional state to work with our Ss dailyâwe have walk the talk of being zen leaders #leadlap
A1: On this profession, we take on the cares and worries of others on and push aside our own. It is important to step back at times and care for ourselves! #leadlap
Hey yâall! Latoya,ed leader where we have smiling faces and beautiful places (South Carolina) here for the party! Still drinking coffee...because itâs Saturday and I love it so much! âď¸â¤ď¸âď¸â¤ď¸ #LeadLAP
A1: It can be easy to âwearâ the stresses of everyone around us. We hear so much about whatâs happening and want to help in as many places as we can. Itâs important to find time to decompress and prioritize. #leadlap
A1: The world of an admin tends to be a lonelier domain with fewer people around them who can relate. It can be a more draining world simply for that reason. #leadlap
I chose "enough" as my #oneword a few years ago for that very reason. We have to be able to draw lines in the sand, to set boundaries, to do and BE enough or we risk burn out!
Looking forward to re-reading this piece as I restore. #leadlap
âTime is always at a premium, which means itâs essential to maximize every opportunity and make every interaction and communication you have with people count! Donât waste a single moment.â -Lead Like A Pirate #LeadLAP
It is also about sharing but not allowing yourself get bogged down by other problems. Sharing is good but choosing who to listen to is also important. A shared journey is a good one! #leadlap
A1 we are not able to fill others if our tank is empty! Wrote a blog about how being with my own family to rejuvenatemakes me better for all kids and other families! We need time to reset! #leadlaphttps://t.co/1uRP7J1bDb
Educators get burned out because there is literally no end to the work that you could do. You have to discipline yourself to work hard and still take care of your physical and mental health. #leadlap
A2 I still struggle with this everyday, I'm trying to enjoy my back porch more and I took my first day off this year the first week of June. I didn't die and the school is still standing. #LeadLap
A1. We canât be our best selves and serve others if we donât take care of ourselves first. Itâs hard to serve well when you are exhausted, stressed, anxious, fearful, or down. The energy leaders bring is transferable and that is why we have to take care of ourselves! #LeadLAP
A2: Finding a groove and making it a habit. They say it takes 21 days. Figure out the best schedule FOR YOU so it can easily carry over into the new school year. #LeadLAP
A2: build my summer schedule to include family vacations, time for me to exercise and time to read and do things I normally never have time for. The key word is intentional, as a leader Summer is so short #leadlap
A1 I found out the hard way that taking on leadership roles in a potentiallytoxic setting can negatively impact your health, a heart attack while teaching was my wake up call, Iâm now happy & that led to my best year of teaching https://t.co/RwqC5jc1MS#LeadLAP
A2: I have my summer wishlist started, now I need to add that to my calendar so summer doesn't fly by without having space~stillness~self-care! #zenteacher#leadlap
A2: Priorities change, emergencies lessen and focus on self-care can become a real focus. I'm changing my schedule for next year in order to get my cardio in the morning along with my weights. That should help #LeadLAP
Something that has helped me; a mentor once said âsaying no to something is saying yes to something else.â The choices we make to say no are important for our self care. #leadLAP
A2: One of my favorite parts of summer is escaping somewhere tropical with @burgessdave and the kids. With all of our crazy schedules, it is nice to take a few weeks and just be together. #LeadLAP
A2 I think it all starts with a great morning routine!

Morning #leadlap! Sorry to jump on late. A1 plan to do my best to make time for the beach with my kids, yoga, Zumba, and hopefully reading some more PIRATE books:)
For my last evaluation as an instructional coach, I shared with my boss that emotional resilience is my continued growth area. I know Iâll need to focus on it in my new role. #leadlap
A2. I spend most of my Saturdays in Columbia at Mizzou football games. I try to give my self at least part of one day of the weekend. Have to get away from the grind even if for only a couple of hours. #LeadLAP
A2 Some of us don't get summer hols like the rest of you... although it does get quieter for us because teachers are away. Take a holiday and switch off (easier said than done!) concentrate on the now not on what you need to do. #leadlap
A2: Just finished an 8-week course from @Mindful_Schools and am participating in a book study of @drchriswillard 's "Growing Up Mindful"-hope to build up my mindfulness practice so that I can model it and bring it to the Ts & Ss in our district. #leadlap
A2. Iâve gotten off track and I can tell. I have to get back in the gym, revamp by running schedule and make sure Iâm routinely exercising. It makes a big difference for me. #LeadLAP
A1: I am not really a fan of the word balance. I feel like it sets people up to feel like theyâve failed. Life isnât , easy rarely balanced but itâs awesome. I prefer to say âwhat do I need to energizeâ or âwhat do I need to continue to doâ. #LeadLAP
A2: Iâm a worker, I think we all are. Thatâs why we are here on a Saturday morning. I never stop, but during the summer I can space it out and fill the gaps with family, friends, exercise, and fun activities. I can be balanced in a way that I canât during the year. #LeadLAP
A2: Making plans for fun activities with friends, prioritizing going to the gym and being outside, setting up a âworkâ schedule and going to actually try and stick to it this summer. #leadlap
A1: Because it's lonely. Can't be friends/carpool with subordinates in some districts, for example. That means the principal is literally alone. If you rate them, you can't be friends with them. It's just you. #leadlap
Q1: Self-care is important for everyone. Why might it be particularly important for administrators/educational leaders?
@thezenteacher#leadlap#zenteacher
A1: We have to model what we preach. We gave đŻ for kids & each other this year & that is exhausting work (both mentally & physically). Now, itâs time to focus on ourselves as individuals. #leadlap
A2 Summer hasnât started for me yet but I have plans to relax and recharge. I have a few summer reading stacks along with a huge stack of jigsaw puzzles that I have not done yet. #LeadLAP
A2: Running has always helped me. Helps me process my day, my thoughts, and filter the noise. Family walks have been tremendous bc of the closeness we feel together. #leadlap
A1: Being a principal is a lonely job. You have to find a way to take care of yourself and enjoy much needed R & R so that you can continue enjoying what you do. Take care of yourself so that you can take care of whatâs important: the children. Here I am with my son. #leadlap
A2 I have been intentional about the time that I allow myself to âworkâ getting up early and giving an hour or so to blogging, writing, etc and then fam/me time during the day and then I close the evening with reflection, writing, blogging, chatting #champforkids#leadlap
A2) To be honest, it's hard to prioritize oneself even during the summer. The sense that we need to "catch up" or "make up for lost time" with loved ones can make it difficult to look after oneself. #LeadLAP
Oh I think it often is! And that is why it is helpful for classroom teachers to support their admins in the work of self-care, as well as vice versa. #LeadLAP
A1: As Admin we spend our day focusing on others. If we let ourselves get run-down then we donât have the energy to support others or make clear decisions. #LeadLAP
A2 - Family vacation and family time already planned. Personal professional development #NPC2018 Chicago bound already planned. Gym time and time at beach in between time. #LeadLAP
A2: I have been intentional about setting aside time to exercise. I this is my âmeâ time. Hopefully I can stick to this once school is back in session. Time with family is also a must! #LeadLAP
This is so important, Latoya! We have to be in tune with when we do get off track and take steps to correct it. When we ignore the signs is when things can go really bad! #LeadLAP
A2: I'll get outside as much as I can and try to train myself to wake up at 4:00 AM instead of going to sleep at 4:00 AM... in preparation for my new job with a long commute. #leadlap#zenteacher
A2: Make time to really recognize whatâs a big deal and what isnât. Identify the âsmall potatoesâ and keep them that way. Remember that family vacation is most important this summer. :) #LeadLAP
I often tell my students to say âthis is going to be a great dayâ three times before they even pull the covers off and put their feet on the floor in the morning. Itâs worked for some! #leadLAP
A2 I think it all starts with a great morning routine!

A2: I think summer is a time to refocus and reground yourself. #Balance was my #oneword2018. For me, spending time with my family and friends is definitely my #1 summer priority. I feel better, take better care of myself, and am better for everyone when Iâm in balance. #LeadLAP
A2: Scheduled 39 weeks of @DDPYoga workouts to get back into shape. Workouts scheduled between 5-530am depending on length. Routine, routine, routine. #LeadLAP
A2: Take a vacation with family, eat summer fruits and veggies from someone's garden (we don't have time to grow young minds ND veggiesđŹ), and take walks in the sun.
Living close to the beach, I love reading on the beach as much as possible. #leadlap
Q3: How do you practice Mindfulness as an administrator?Or if you don't, would incorporating it into your practice be helpful?
@thezenteacher#leadlap#zenteacher
Agreed. But what if that is symptomatic of our current system and not something that we are talking about because we are too afraid of the implications? #leadLAP
A2: Spending time with family is a big bonus of summer. Taking time to enjoy the small things. Eating a little better, sleeping a little more. #LeadLAP
#LeadLAP A2. I am organizing my house. I feel better throughout the year when my home and family are organized and healthy. it helps me focus on work when I am there.
Iâve been extremely busy at work and it has made it difficult for me to stick to the schedule for running. Iâm committed to getting back on track though. #leadlap
Q3: How do you practice Mindfulness as an administrator?Or if you don't, would incorporating it into your practice be helpful?
@thezenteacher#leadlap#zenteacher
A2 I know balance gets thrown around a lot but it works, intentially balances days are a few hours on my upcountryming presentation or fellowship work followed by 2 hours kayaking in the bay. The end of the day should feel great & tired but not drained. #leadlap this is my car
Q3: How do you practice Mindfulness as an administrator?Or if you don't, would incorporating it into your practice be helpful?
@thezenteacher#leadlap#zenteacher
A2: In some ways self care is easier in the summer when we have more time. However, if you donât keep scheduling in exercise it can slip away #LeadLAP
A2: I try to make it a priority to keep my weekends school-free and family-full. So having three day weekends in the summer really makes it extra fun. #LeadLAP
A3 I ask myself a lot of why questions and try to ask myself how would that make my wife, daughters, grandkids feel when I interact with people and go about my day. #LeadLap
Q3: How do you practice Mindfulness as an administrator?Or if you don't, would incorporating it into your practice be helpful?
@thezenteacher#leadlap#zenteacher
I think I like the word because it's like a visual. Two plates balanced, keeping them about the same so you don't drop one of them. Work & Personal on each side. Sometimes we have to take something off, but you have to reflect on it to make it work. #leadlap
A2.b: These things should not just be changes for the summer, but also habit-building steps to propel one to keeping them in some way once school starts again. #leadlap
Then we need to have a manageable workload. If the expectation is that you will work 24/7, you WILL burnout. Reminds me of when my teachers would assign 100+ pages of vacation HW and then say "take some time to relax!" #leadlap#zenteacher
So interesting! That's one thing I've always loved abt being a teacher. Most of the world doesn't have a start & stop date. However, since we are a looping schl, the years run together (as they do for admin.) I consider summers to be a gift, a chance to start anew. #leadlap
A3: Work in progress. Reading the miracle morning helped a lot. My mornings are for reflecting and focusing. Just ordered a gratitude journal. #leadlap
A3. My morning routine is essential. I start the day with a fresh cup of coffee, find and post something inspirational to set the tone for the day and mentally focus, and I pray on my way to work in the car. That routine helps me. #leadlap
Honestly it feels like the opposite for me. If I have a rhythm, I can incorporate self care into that rhythm. Over the summer itâs all off. I just want to be lazy. #leadLAP
A3: I struggle with this a lot because my mind is usually 123 tabs open at the same time. Quiet time tends to open more tabs. But I'm working on it. #ZenPirateProblems#LeadLAP
A2: This is the first summer where I will have much more time to myself (1 HS kiddo & 2 college kids now working & no running to games & tournaments đą). I want to get back into walking & exercising like I used to do. Iâve also been reading. #leadlap
A3 The new buzz word is mindfulness. This is what we did pre internet. Be with friends and family, read good books, talked face to face, enjoyed a coffee and a chat. Be mindful =switch it off #leadlap
A3: I'm focused on the goals and intentions all of the time. I'm not so good at this either. I feel happy with who I am and where I want to go. Mindfulness is part of the focus #LeadLAP
A2: My escape and our family is usually out in the wild. Either mountains of Colorado or the Texas hill country. Need all the rest to come back re-energized for the next school year. These are my boys having a blast. #leadlap
A3 M is for Mindful in CHAMP for kids. I have to admit it is an area that I am working on! Have set personal goals to make it a priority! I understand itâs importance but find myself not always implementing #LeadLAP#champforkidshttps://t.co/gkFTTjzw7c
A3 as a classroom T I incorporated yoga into morning meetings, we now use the ringing of a bell three times to cue deep breathing exercises that restore calmness, we infuse empathy into most situations to be mindful of how others, think, feel, experience #leadlap
A3 this is hard for me but Iâm so lucky to have an amazing colleague and friend in @cbasile14 who is a mindfulness expert and teaching me a lot! #LEADLAP
A3 I think it would be helpful for leaders to practice mindfulness just for the fact of staying focused on what really matters. Quiet reflection time is a good thing! #leadlap
A3: I've been working on my #mindfulness practice this year after setting it as a YET goal. Looking to awaken the senses with intention has helped me a lot. What sounds do I hear, sights do I see, scents do I smell, touches do I feel? https://t.co/EiyvAxXlos#leadupchat

A2: Great Q; at this time last year, I wrote a post called Your Summertime Plan BE; here are my simple suggestions. https://t.co/iK0aVX9VSy ⌠#leadlap
A3 lots of people find spending time sitting in quiet reflection. I find this happens every Sunday morning for me in church. Not PC these days but it works for me. #leadlap
I recently purchased the Five-Minute Journal and LOVE it. It has become one of the healthy habits I am building. Have you seen it? I think you would really like it! #LeadLAP
A3: I pray out loud every morning in the car on the way to work.I sing or hum periodically during the day if I feel stressed(the songs that pop in my head often make me smile)I get a cup of tea and go talk to kids. These are a few of my favorite things #LeadLAP
I have also started to blog and I hope this will make me more mindful as well as I get farther into the process. Check it out https://t.co/9Od6hDZwBG I would love some feedback either in my DM or on my blog. #LeadLap
This definitely is not a strength of mine. I find my mind is constantly wandering from one place to the next and one task to another. Running does help with this though! #leadlap
Q4: Most administrators like action and productivity, so how can we ensure that stillness, silence, and space remain a critical part of our self-care plan in this White Noise world?
@thezenteacher#LeadLAP#ZenTeacher
Everyone on your campus is important. Everyone should be listened to and feel supported and encouraged. Lend a hand and be part of the team! You should never be too high and mighty to stop and serve. #KidsDeserveIt#edchat#tlap#LeadLAP#AspireLead#SummerAdminChat
A3 I have become more intentional about taking time to just breathe. Sometimes I might listen to a song or just look out the window. Each night I take time for some reading. #LeadLAP
But teachers want their leaders to enjoy their time and families too - so how can we make everyone feel like it's okay to have a life outside of work? #leadlap#zenteacher
A2: Also, Iâm attending a conference in a few days & intentionally decided to travel earlier to enjoy some family time, seeing the sights, sharing new experiences, ... #leadlap
Q4: Most administrators like action and productivity, so how can we ensure that stillness, silence, and space remain a critical part of our self-care plan in this White Noise world?

A3: I try to find quiet time for myself first thing in the morning or last thing at night. It is so important to find time to be present in the moment. Fortunately, I have a good friend who teaches mindfulness at her school and sends us reminders to take the time. #LeadLAP

You're not alone! :) 123 tabs open and no idea where the music is coming from LOL (not my quote)
It is about trying though and intentionally being reflective

A3. I think educators in general over do it often because of the missionary nature of our work. Have any of you read Generosity Burnout? It explains it well: https://t.co/8k0DmPwx6W#leadlap

Life is about people, commitment, loyalty and relationships. In the end we won't be measured by our bank account, test scores, sales numbers or wins and losses but by the difference we made in people's lives... and we make a difference through relationships. #leadlap
Mindfulness is my word of 2018. I try to be intentional with each moment of my day. I schedule time for myself on my planner and consider it a priority. Having #Lupus means that I have to work doubly hard to stay healthy. #leadlap

A3: Although I've done yoga for several years, these past weeks digging into mindfulness has really made a difference. By stopping & trying to be present, we are rewiring parts of our brain-helping us to do less "fight or flight" & more "attend and befriend". #leadlap
Q4: Most administrators like action and productivity, so how can we ensure that stillness, silence, and space remain a critical part of our self-care plan in this White Noise world?
@thezenteacher#LeadLAP#ZenTeacher
A4 As an administrator I know I need to give our Ts time for this and be mindful of the fact that they need this time as much as I do. We need to promote this type of activity, model it, teach it and respect it. Our staff needs to be reminded that it's ok to take time #LeadLap

A3: Mindfulness is about blocking out distractions & being present in a moment of focused reflection. Reflection leads to inspiration and inspiration leads to impact. I practice this with the Five-Minute Journal--learned about it in Read to Lead podcast w/ @THEjeffbrown#LeadLAP
Q3: How do you practice Mindfulness as an administrator?Or if you don't, would incorporating it into your practice be helpful?
@thezenteacher#leadlap#zenteacher
A4. Longer passing periods or advisory periods offer opportunities for periodic quiet. Build into routine to avoid laptop, etc. Keep colored pencils at desk-sketch and color, let mind rest. #LeadLAP
A4 by using research on mindfulness to implement calmer school and classroom settings, finding relevant studies that show the incredible value in shifting from quantity to quality in our thinking, making yoga a domain 4 worthy entry, #leadlap
A4: Action and productivity are good, but what if stillness, silence and space were part of a leaderâs âproductiveâ goals? What if we redefined âaction?â #LeadLAP
Q4: Most administrators like action and productivity, so how can we ensure that stillness, silence, and space remain a critical part of our self-care plan in this White Noise world?
@thezenteacher#LeadLAP#ZenTeacher
A4: because of the fast-paced and connected 24/7 world we live in, we need to have the quiet and airplane mode timesâthey are critical for us all #leadlap
Every day focus on your PURPOSE. Remember why you do what you do. We donât get burned out because of what we do. We get burned out because we forget why we do it. #LEADLAP
A3: Having older children leaving the nest has grounded me. Iâve become more intentional with being present and am focusing on finding the joy in the smallest moments at home & at work. I love being a part of #JoyfulLeaders also! #leadlap
A4 honestly I find myself intentionally scheduling time to pause because on the days I donât, I find myself completely wiped which isnât good for me or those around me:) #LEADLAP
#LeadLAP A4. Even though it is summer I incorporate downtime throughout the year. We need to find something we like to do and purposely find time all year long. I find my peace in cooking. The day slows down and my family comes together to eat sharing time together.
A4: I think this is so hard as our jobs get bigger and louderâand things donât come off our plate. Time becomes the most precious commodity. Most of my quiet time takes place late at night when I can take time for myself. #LeadLAP
Q4: Most administrators like action and productivity, so how can we ensure that stillness, silence, and space remain a critical part of our self-care plan in this White Noise world?

Any @dbc_inc book recommendations for empowering students?! I would like to do a 'book tasting' around our goal of empowerment and leadership. I've only read #leadlap & #4OCF, so I have a lot of reading to do. Both amazing! @burgessdave@burgess_shelley@RACzyz@BethHouf
A4: I think that if admins ever forget the importance of stillness, silence, ... we should be in the classrooms - read with the children, watch them read, see them create art, just sit and observe. Always a reminder of why we do what we do. #leadlap
A4: I found that by practicing intentional listening and intentionaling observing for the sake of noticing rather than âlooking forâ have become better at creating that kind of space for myself. #LeadLAP
Q5: Name two things that make you feel pampered, comforted, and soothed. These are your "Pamper Triggers." Now tell us how you will get to them more often over the summer.

Sorry one more thing. This relates to the current #leadLAP thread on self care. Compassion fatigue. For our colleagues of color they experience extra compassion fatigue trying to be âniceâ in the midst of experiencing hurt.

I've been doing it in workshops and it really is interesting to watch the participants' reactions to the experience!
You'll never want to do fast food again once you experience mindful eating.

What are the strategies everyone uses for getting past the idea that being still doesn't mean they aren't being productive? I can't be alone in this challenge. #LeadLAP

@thezenteacher#LeadLAP#ZenTeacher
Sometimes we confuse being busy with being productive. And think that being busy is a sign of being a good teacher/admin. I'm working on being more productive so that I have the quiet time/self-care time
#leadlap
Q4: Most administrators like action and productivity, so how can we ensure that stillness, silence, and space remain a critical part of our self-care plan in this White Noise world?
@thezenteacher#LeadLAP#ZenTeacher
A4: I typically arrive to school before most staff. I appreciate the quiet as i prepare for the day. I also believe that while quick action is necessary in some situations, time is necessary in others. Taking time to stop and think about decisions is powerful. #LeadLAP
Q5: Name two things that make you feel pampered, comforted, and soothed. These are your "Pamper Triggers." Now tell us how you will get to them more often over the summer.

A4 I often chunk the time in my mind. Focusing on tasks and the amount of them that needs to be done can easily overwhelm. Focusing on one thing for 15mins allows for work to get started and leads to more getting done. #LeadLAP
I begin and end my day in quiet, calm prayer and thought. I arrive to work well ahead of start time to prepare for my day in quiet and calm. I end my day in quiet reflection and prayer.
#leadlap
A3: Wish I was better at practicing mindfulness. Sometimes it is just 5 mintues of quiet that I spend in my office at the end of the day or blogging about school. Reflection is important and something that can't be taken for granted. I do love my morning workouts too! #leadlap
#LeadLAP A4. Even though it is summer I incorporate downtime throughout the year. We need to find something we like to do and purposely find time all year long. I find my peace in cooking. The day slows down and my family comes together to eat sharing time together.
A4: My time is first thing in the morning before everyone else is up and moving. If I need some more time I have my drive to and from school. Sometimes I'll listen to a podcast, other times I just take advantage of the silence. #leadlap
White folx. Please recognize the extra cost and need for self care for our colleagues of color who also have to show gentleness and compassion for those who continually hurt them (UNINTENTIONALY) #leadLAP
A4. If we are always doing, when are we thinking? When are we reflecting? When are we designing? When are we planning? Meta-cognition is essential! We all need to think about thinking! Be still and think! #LeadLAP
Q4: Most administrators like action and productivity, so how can we ensure that stillness, silence, and space remain a critical part of our self-care plan in this White Noise world?
@thezenteacher#LeadLAP#ZenTeacher
Something I enjoy doing as well (arriving early for extra quiet time). Also, allowing yourself more time to give purposeful, well-informed responses. As much as I like to be efficient, reminding myself to slow down to be understand needs of others helps me be better. #LeadLAP

A4: I've started making lists of what I need from admin.. that way I don't pester with little things here or there. I find it's more efficient to wait until there are 5+ items on my list that can all be answered in a quick conversation - saves time for admin and for me #LeadLAP
A5 this may seem odd but the first is when we go out on a weekend I don't want to decide where we eat or the movie we see. Second is I love to sit in a hot tub and have a nice drink to relax. #LeadLap
A4: Taking advantage of the time before the kids arrive or after they leave to reflect on the day. And share this practice with the staff. Build in time during faculty meetings for silent reflection & share out time. #LeadLAP
Itâs problematic. We struggle (as white folx) to navigate anger. The system teaches us early on that anger is bad. The proper reaction to being hurt is crying/sadness. Not anger. It creates a toxic environment. Sadness AND anger are human reactions to hurt. #leadLAP

A5 I love in Japanese restaurants when they bring you heated washcloths, & when someone at home offers to refill your coffee & you donât have to get up, so to get more I guess eat out more & make sure Iâm really nice to my wife, and refill her coffee often #leadlap

A5: spending time with my kiddos and music.. I find summer is the perfect time to let life happen, I try to not over plan and roll with the punches #leadLAP
A5: I love taking time to read and then reflect. Looking forward to reading #bereal and finishing up Lead with Culture by @JayBilly2 Spending time down the shore is also great. Just finished a six mile run! #runlap#leadlap
A4: As a leader you need to differentiate between whatâs important and noise. You need to tune out the noise and focus on priorities. You also need to grow thick skin. #leadlap
A4: We have to create these moments for ourselves. I enjoy my short drive to work and home & quiet time in the morning before everyone arrives (No more kids to get on buses at home, game day breakfasts to make, etc. Whew!) #leadlap

These questions are so thoughtful! I love forest bathing as an option though anymore our town is turning in to Friends-slab instead of FriendsWOOD. lol ... https://t.co/XuKKUyyGEB#leadlap
A5. Writing and being with my family and friends. Those two always make me feel good. I love to write and read. Always have. Also, my family is amazing. I love them so much. #LeadLAP

A5: Being in and around the water is my place! It definitely helps wash away stress and really relaxes me. Also gettingnout into the woods and hiking/camping! #leadlap
A5 Definitely love to spend time walking/hiking with my dog! I wonder if my school district would change the rules about dogs being in the school? #LeadLAP Dogs could be the answer to many issues! #justsayin
A4: In addition to mini-sessions (@calm & Smiling Mind aređ for this) try to incorporate other mindful practices: mindful walking, listening, eating, driving... Take a minute to just tune into what is going on NOW-no processing, thinking-just be there in that moment. #leadlap
A5 Two things....
Quiet time maybe listening to music without doing anything else.
Standing by the ocean shore and listening to the sound of the waves.
#LeadLAP
I totally appreciate @PeriscopeCo today more than I have before! I'm chatting with #leadlap crew and listening to the keynote at #BadgeSummit at the same time! Love technology!
#LeadLAP A5. I take more time to watch food network and read next to a pool. I love to reflect on my image with shopping, and pedicures. Traveling makes me happy too.Just finished a student week in Boston and New York followed by 4 days Avid training in Texas.
A5 Going for long walks with friends and family. Receiving and unexpected message from my grown up children or quick unexpected Skype from my 5month old grandson makes me smile #leadlap
Spending time with my family and friends and yoga or some form of exercise usually done with friends. I try to be intentional about making sure both happen regularly. I definitely get my cup filled in these areas more in summer than during the school year. #Leadlap
A5: Iâm weird, but maybe Iâm not alone. I donât like to be pampered. It makes me feel awkward. I feel my best when the people around me need my help. I feel soothed when I am solving a problem. I feel comforted when the job is done well. #leadLAP

A5: Family vacations to the beach where we can swim, fish, eat, read by the water, and play games are my absolute happy place. My husband and I are able to invite our mothers (mom is a widow) and make a complete package.
On a smaller scale, I love a massage! #leadlap
Just a thought -- maybe we should have a chat about this same topic during the school year to remind each other of the importance of this topic and to help hold us accountable for self-care. #leadlap
A6: Live life to the fullest, take time for myself, leave the big decisions for another day and spend time with my family. Rest, recharge and relax. #leadlap
A5
I hope to plan some days to just sit by the ocean or take a drive to RI and walk along the beach in Newport.
Quiet time at home should be easy over the next couple of weeks so I am looking forward to that.
Also attending #ILA18 in Austin midJuly. #LeadLAP
A5: Time with my family and an occasional trip to a day spa...Spending time with my family and turning off my phone on vacation days...Taking the time to consciously make appointments and go! Haha! #LeadLAP

A6 I give myself permission to simply slow down. Although I know itâs okay if I donât push for action the very second Iâm inspired by something, I need to remind myself A LOT:) #LEADLAP
This could be a great reward for teachers! Permission slip from the principal to not feel like they have to stay at the school for hours and hours each day (over and above contract time) #leadlap
A5 Gardening while blasting music on my headphones (and possibly singing outloud!) & reading on the beach. Both will happen this summer-hopefully several times! #leadlap đŠâđžđšđźđď¸đ

A7 I will continue to blog and ask myself reflective questions in my interactions and actions with others and my decisions. I will also get in some solid hot tub time and make one of those permission slips from @BethHouf#leadlap
A7 I have just been accepted as a Fellow of CILIP. Self care steps is to now give myself time to do more of what I enjoy and work less over the summer. Switch off at 8pm every night and hope this becomes a habit. #leadlap
Permission to take time exclusively for my family, without interruption, because of all the teens in my district the two that call me "Mom" need my time and focus most. #leadlap
A7: I'm brand new to social media as a PLN tool.. moving forward I am going to rely on my network of strong, amazing educators more to keep me balanced and on the cutting edge #LeadLAP
A7 Take walks along the ocean regularly this summer. Make a self-care to-do list and make it a priority to work on this list! The goal will be to make some of these part of my daily routine by the end of the summer. #LeadLAP
A7: I will try and reign my mind in and just be in the moment more. Focus on what I am doing and not let the mind wander back to work so much. Use my quiet times to get grounded, enjoy the people, food, and things around me. Itâs going to be hard but Iâm going to try. #leadlap
A7 I'm giving myself permission to play today even though I have a long To Do list. PLAY Today is my motto! (Which I'm including joining chats this morning) #leadlap Going for a walk in 10 minutes....countdown!
A7 something I can definitely do a much better job of now is getting more sleep. I need to stop pushing the hours of the day to keep going and listen to how I feel. #LEADLAP
A7: I think I will practice setting some limits on summer work by practicing saying âThat is enough for today.â Slow down youâre movin to fast #LeadLAP
Just a thought -- how can we all be encouraged to keep going with our A7's when we fail, because all of us will likely have times of failure in implementing these things. #leadlap
A6: Slow down - our jobs often move at a frenetic pace. Thereâs a lot of power in slowing down. Also, both as a teacher and admin, I was/am comfortable admitting when I donât know something. #Leadlap
@mlkbingham I found this resource a lifesaver! check out all the 'grown up' ones, but definitely play around with the ones for kids and teens, too @calm#LeadLap
A6 That's a great one-I'll write that permission slip, too! Self-doubt takes over all too easily and we need to keep reminding ourselves we ARE good enough-mistakes and all! #leadlap
So many great ideas being shared in #LeadLAP today. Self-care is important! Our chat is almost over. I hope you all find at least 5-10 minutes today to do something just for you!
A7: Go screen free for designated hours of the day so I can spend time with my family. This is my favorite screen time though. https://t.co/YTw4hinkPW#leadlap

@jillrt over the summer I write these little messages to myself in email, then randomly choose days for them to 'delay send' throughout the year. It's nice getting an email from myself putting things in perspective #LeadLap

Ah yes! Getting connected with other educators on social media is the best form of self-initiated PD. The connections are always there for you. Have said, Twitter wonât change your life, the educators you meet there will. #leadlap
