I am not a robot
My intelligence is not artificial but grown by my students and my desire to get better at teaching.
Hey Tracy! It's so nice to have you here tonight! I was just in the Okanagan this afternoon! I miss Oliver so much, but it's nice to be home in Langley! #BCEdChat

Q1: We already use computers, apps, and devices to replace all kinds of things ‘in real life’. What are some ways you use technology as a human adult in your day to day life? #bcedchat
Evening, #bcedchat. I'm Brian. I teach MS students English in CO. Our robot overlords are getting somewhere in turns of their language skills but, in my estimation, they're not there yet.

Hi #bcedchat! Carrie, K to 12 TechUp Learning Specialist at Science World. Will b win and out tonight - wishing I had a robot to get more things done at at the same time!
#bcedchat A1: Aside from twitter ProD chats, I still marvel at the ability to utilize it for editing, feedback, visualizing, exploring, connecting and a wee bit more. (or is that Moore?)
Q1: We already use computers, apps, and devices to replace all kinds of things ‘in real life’. What are some ways you use technology as a human adult in your day to day life? #bcedchat
A1: Alarm clock, keep in touch with family, share learning, learn from others, connect to people far away, organize my banking, so many ways! #bcedchat
A1: I like to use tech not “just” as a replacement, but to do things I couldn’t otherwise do. While I read on both paper & screen, my @apple watch has helped me reduce my waist size over past year and a bit... #bcedchat
A1- lets see where to begin...I have a coffee machine that starts the day before I do...I have a roomba to help with eh golden retriever fur and Hey Google is my best friend #bcedchat

A1 Let's narrow focus to professional responsibilities. Via computer, I take attendance, jockey workflow of most students' reading/writing; find & shrae literacy artifacts for us to consider; communicate w/students, their families, colleagues. #bcedchat
A1. I love with tech in hand. Or close to it. Organizing my life in GCalendars is a big one. Online shopping is huge too (finding best prices & beating the holiday crowds - yes, I did). Oh...and Googling things of interest while watching tv. #bcedchat
A1:Producing PD lessons on character, values and climate with YouTube clips and application questions that are utilized by schools domestically & internationally as a tool for continued growth & development #bcedchat
The health reminders to stand & move every hour + 30 mins exercise + 10 000+ steps + “move/calorie” goal that I am routinely doubling (but like to hit the goal a bit more regularly before I change my goals) #bcedchat
Not using it as much as I thought I would, but it is letti;g me experiment with some options (lights now but more later...?) birthday & Christmas may give me more tools to play with #bcedchat
I love that I can set my phone to music... but took me a while to find the right tune to get me out of bed instead of lull me back to sleep / startle me! #bcedchat
A2: So many! Aside from using tech in CS classes, use Desmos, GeoGebra or SketchPad in math. So many resources are online. And wouldn't be able to do #bcedchat and talk to PLN w/o tech!
Prefer the GCal interface. And it’s easier to share with non-Apple people. That way I’m not switching back and forth. For a while i had the two synced, but then just fully gave in and converted. #bcedchat
Thank you! I like to tell parents who ask for homework or work for vacations during the schoo year: if I can replicate what we do in the classroom onto a piece of paper....I’m not doing the job that I should... #bcedchat
#bcedchat A2: One example: Geometer's Sketchpad (or Desmos) totally dynamitizes the geometry problems I can ask. Whole new realms have been created from the static Euclidean I grew up with. It allows students to really explore, pose their own Qs & to seek answers of relevance
A2 My class has been running off a smartboard and clickers for years, We also use spheros and arduinos for class work as well as ipads and chromebooks and of course we love google docs and google classroom & Desmos. Just to name a few. #bcedchat
My Apple Watch is always connected to my phone....and me....soon may not need to ever have a phone to be tethered to.... @apple glasses in the future? #bcedchat
Every teacher who doesn't know about #Kahoot is a crying shame. When you need something for the last 10 minutes of class, and want to do a formative assessment (or just have fun and build relationships!) Kahoot has a quiz for you! #BCEdChat
Q3: What are some things you wish computers could do for you? (and if you know of tech that can help with another teacher’s response, shout it out!) #bcedchat
A2. I like my students being able to find online tutorials of different sewing skills. I want them to learn that I won’t always be there to teach them, but a good tutorial will/may be #bcedchat
A2 my typing on my family’s @apple IIe allowed my cursive to not distract from my writing. I still encourage typing over cursive (except for those who have a natural talent for calligraphy) #bcedchat
ha! I'm an Apple person because I want things to look pretty, but I don't want to spend the time to code it. Just WYSIWYG all day long for me. #BCEdChat
A2: Time management, communicating learning to Ss + parents, communicating w/other communities, chatting to experts, organizing our work, preparing, presenting, videos, research, comparisons, coding, robotics, learning about how others live / issues beyond our community #bcedchat
Awesome!!! You know, I was frustrated with most grading applications I've used and seriously thought about making my own so it does exactly what I want... #bcedchat
Q3: What are some things you wish computers could do for you? (and if you know of tech that can help with another teacher’s response, shout it out!) #bcedchat
A3 Cook a delicious dinner? (Sorry, Insta Pot, whatever computer is running you still needs too much input from me!) Respond meaningfully to higher-level qualities in student writing (ideas/organization), rather than get lost in convention weeds? #BCEdChat
A3: I wish computers could teach kids to use computers. The number of times I’ve had to explain to kids how to email or upload is kinda amazing #bcedchat
As many already said, it's a presentation program... different from PowerPoint, you can combine text and media to make website, newsletter, etc. #bcedchat
A3: I wish the computer can do all the tedious stuff in my work. As a teacher, attendance, marking and report cards... now paper work and expense reports... #bcedchat
I worry about too much tech-as-toy, I like seeing tech as tool where primaries see that tech isn’t just a distraction #bcedchat but all kids need more work with motor skills & rhyming in face-to-face settings #bcedchat
A3: I wish the computer can do all the tedious stuff in my work. As a teacher, attendance, marking and report cards... now paper work and expense reports... #bcedchat
A4: I teach ELL. This week I communicated basically with a new student through google translate in ways that were not possible 2-3 years ago. It has changed ELL learning completely. #BCEdChat
Yes... her geometry course was one of the best math courses I took. Totally eye-opening! And I've read about Touchcounts too. Pretty cool. :D #bcedchat
#bcedchat If the Rio Olympic news reports were generated by AI's then how long before the richer students are submitting their house AI's work as their own?
A4 I believe FreshGrade has been phenomenal in making learning and expectations more transparent. Know learn and do through posting evidence of learning and reflections from students, parents and teachers. #bcedchat
A4 My students are now able to see anything and plan any project. We can do VR tours of anything. Build anything with the 3d printer or even make anything with the arduinos and rasp pi. I never had these opportunities in school. #bcedchat
A4 I am intrigued by virtual field trips - spending most of my life in “rural” BC (my opinion of rural is that going to Walmart is a day trip +) “seeing” some things helps understanding. TV okay, 3D better... #bcedchat
Have you used the conversation function on a device? You speak it translates and speaks in their language. They answer and it translates into English. #BCEdChat
I love the idea that technoloby helps with COMMUNICATING STUDENT LEARNING and creates an e-portfolio to collect artifact of learning, reflection, and demonstrated competencies. #bcedchat
As long as you gain informed parent consent that complies with FIPPA. We also lock our GClass down (eg. no email, no chat etc). #bcedchat We use it to extend practice in writing... #bcedchat

A4 tech is also enabling us to
A) personalize learning better than ever before
and
B) communicate student learning better than any report card could ever do
Powerful time to be in education
#bcedchat
A4: Tech has changed / expanded who students learn from in their classrooms e.g. Mystery Skype, @DiscoveryEd Virtual Fieldtrips https://t.co/VPfrKh92Q3
The classroom walls are no longer a barrier to learning
#bcedchat
A4 Technology creates virtual room for time- & space-shifted collaboration, for better/worse; also holds potential to bring universal-design-for-learning (UDL) principles within realizable reach. #BCEdChat

haha i have so many things on my wish list. i actually consider getting my APCSA students to write a grading program this summer. :P i think i'll keep promoting CS education, so some students will write the program for me #bcedchat

A4: There is so much choice right now that sometimes it is hard to choose which technology to use and when to use it. Sometimes you just have to take a walk outside and smell the roses! #bcedchat
Looking for english writing feedback/comment lists to use with (import into) @GoogleKeep. Would love it to have external links to videos that show how to correct errors (such as subject-verb agreement). Is there such a list? #engchat#litchat#grammar#bcedchat#ubcmet
I am always surprised at what students aren’t able to do! I think as adults we expect a lot and that all kids are comfortable with digital tools. #bcedchat
I was originally going to get my APCSA students that graduated to work on this SBG gradebook project this summer. But because of my new job I didn't have the immediate need. #bcedchat
A5 I love how my students can connect with me through google classroom with any ?s or thoughts at any time. I also love that Ss can now see the world through skype with others and various projects they have picked for us to work on. The opportunities are now limitless #bcedchat
YES! I loved being able to connect with students asynchronously! I am a night owl and would be a better teacher if school was from 4-10pm. @technolandy can you start a night school for teachers like me? #BCEdChat
My class loves twitter and uses it to connect with other teachers like @rilmcknight and @fitwithfrank . My goal this year is to connect with another teacher using skype and actually do some team teaching. My class loved #MysterySkype last year. #bcedchat
#bcedchat How many of you have 'attended' an on-line learning conference? I found it amazing to interact directly with points keynote speakers made, accessing the conference & other attendees responses when I had time. Haven't seen many in the last 10 years
Bunch of links gathered by middle-school colleagues & me re: conventions that might be helpful starting point for you. https://t.co/pzBW9VbOXS Sheet, not yet kept on Keep. #BCEdChat
I love the connection between students (and teacher) using Google Apps particularly in remote areas. Helps students to collaborate and co-construct. I also met a lot of people via Twitter too... made good relationships. #bcedchat
YES! The idea that we can move artifacts & reflect on learning along a continuum on digital is awesome. Freedom access anytime, anywhere. Parents love that type of access #bcedchat
A5: I actually did a pen pal project with my Mandarin classes using the old fashion way of mailing letters, but Skype would be cool as well. In our work at TEALS we have industry experts conferencing w/ Ss in rural areas too. #bcedchat
I love that technology for collaborating with people in Qatar and China too. Many different versions out there that we dont usually use in Can. #bcedchat
Q6: Many educators are afraid to engage in technology because it might break down/not work correctly. What routines, pedagogy, and growth mindset do you have in place to have computers (tech, devices, etc) in your practice? #bcedchat

Some of my Math 8 parents really appreciated the photos and student artifacts in Ss' FreshGrade portfolios. Unfortunately I stopped using it b/c I didn't like the gradebook. #bcedchat

A5 love some twitter connections - as an example, how @pernilleripp and her @globalreadaloud bring classes together to talk about books (and compare learning spaces!) #bcedchat
A5. We use Office 365 Onenote which allows teachers to comment specifically on their work (and it not get lost in the binder). It is a great way to share too. Post links / videos. No excuse for "I didn't get the notes." #bcedchat
Fair point, I hear you! I've been framing lately as wonderful opportunities for students & me to learn from each other. (Having said to numerous students, "How do you feel about keyboard shortcuts? 'Cause I've got one for you!" now some students are reciprocating w/ me) #BCEdChat
Well it was meant as a gradebook. I think you don't have to use that feature. We have our own and while some uses it for report cards, most are using as evidence of specific learning standards #bcedchat
In reply to
@msyehuang, @ChristineYH, @teachermrskhan
Awesome thanks! I’ve started creating general comments that I use on a regular basis, thought it’d be easier than writing them each time. Also want students to be able to learn with videos when they’re not in class with me. #bcedchat
#bcedchat This has also led to non-classroom techs having too much control of the tech you can have in your own classroom. Long delays in repair, purchase, installation, (and the learning curves) have stopped many from implementing (and the cost factors).
Q6: Many educators are afraid to engage in technology because it might break down/not work correctly. What routines, pedagogy, and growth mindset do you have in place to have computers (tech, devices, etc) in your practice? #bcedchat
A6:Almost everything that can be done with tech can be done with a whiteboard, paper and pencil. It is just slower. All lesson plans sometimes fall apart. We adapt. #BCEdChat
I am working on converting all to google docs. It allows personal comments and peer editing and really stops the my teacher lost my work excuse. That last one has really changed my coworkers views on using it... #bcedchat
A6: We are not afraid of driving cars just b/c they can break down. Why feel that way for tech? Just go with the flow? Tchrs usually
have activities in our bag of tricks when we encounter tech difficulties. #bcedchat
A6 a growth mindset is key! Things won’t always work, and it’s difficult to get comfortable with that concept, especially when one is already hesitant to use tech #bcedchat
Definitely! And teaching your kids that tech is 'dumb' in that it is built by humans who can't think of everything. It's a great time to talk about not giving up and how to manage unwieldy tech! #BCEdChat
A5 I also like how @codeorg@Code_LikeAGirl@hadip have helped me show other teachers that a coding mindset doesn’t always need a screen (coding centres appearing at this year’s #hourofcode in my school!) #bcedchat
#bcedchat A6: I found I needed to immerse myself in a few, to truly master them (and stay with them longer) just to make my implementation more effective. [Hint: I was still using Appleworks well after Pages came out (and now use Word predominantly)]
Kind of hard at the secondary level to not use a gradebook. Though by gradebook I don't mean the % tracking or point collecting system. But we need somewhere to collect data from assessments and report out #bcedchat

I have been luck to fund raise and get student awarded tech that my district doesnt control. This is the only way we can survive as our tech people are not in house. I always have the backup just in case. #bcedchat
A6: The class I have this year love to share laptops instead of having one each. When things "go wrong" then they are very patient and forgiving and lean on each other to talk through problems that occur. #bcedchat
A6. I have a couple of go-to colleagues when I have questions or challenges. I will also just open it up to the class - "who can fix this?" Usually someone can and they feel valued! #bcedchat
A6 Complex considerations--When people connect the tool with purpose and need, they usually seek out support. Key is 2 keep doors open & always invite possibilities. #bcedchat
A6 Alert students (or colleagues) when trying something new -- techy or otherwise -- to expect some moments to go differently than planned. The more public the moment, the more back-up plans & fall-back positions are nice to have :) #BCEdChat
I think it comes down to our age. when I was young I was told we could crash the computer to easily. I think people still believe that and forget that nothing is ever really lost or broken when we use it #bcedchat
Please share the information about our BC Core Competencies EdCamp with parents in your schools and districts. Parents are welcome to attend and we could have a session specifically for parents if there is interest! #bcedchat#corecompetencies#sd38learnhttps://t.co/wf2LJrft58
First time I’m teaching English in years! So much of what I previously did was shorthand comments (with everything on paper never hand time to write huge comments for 90+ students at a time). Seeing Keep as a way to make learning happen both in & out of classroom. #bcedchat
A6 I promote mobile devices. So I do a lot of filming for our Month-in-Review videos and modelling how tech is a useful tool. I encourage my staff to use their phones to catch learning for efolios, to text me for good/bad needs... so much potential #bcedchat
True. It can certainly cause some frustrations. Shouldn't be the reason to be afraid of tech though. When it works it can be a powerful teaching tool. #bcedchat
I think it’s great for sharing evidence and reflection. Can always use something else to collect, track and record %. And I hope we are moving away from % eventually anyway!😉 Admit that I’m in elementary so it’s easier for me say that! #bcedchat

A7 so far (until our future robot overlords determines it important) tech can’t meet the social-emotional and educational differentiations of my learning community...it is a useful tool for that, but not independent (yet...) #bcedchat
My most collaborative classes have been the ones with 1:1 tech. Maybe because they’re the most differentiated so not comparing self to others but self to self...? #bcedchat

I'm older. Same as when pencils & blackboards came out. #bcedchat
A BCAMT keynote speaker spoke about the creativity of a certain type of problem in getting students thinking/solving ... then said or this calculator button does it in a keystroke. What're you going to do now?
Brave, newish world! I'm definitely a fan of digital documents unlocking iterative drafting/learning/revising cycles in ways that paper never quite has in my practice. #BCEdChat
Yea, I was hoping I could directly link the evidence in the FreshGrade portfolio to its gradebook. However, its gradebook functionality doesn't do what I want - I suspect the math can be incorrect too depending on the set up. I think it's developed w/ Elem tchrs in mind #bcedchat

We also need to accept that our students may be able to fix it and that is ok. We can learn from those who have used tech their whole lives. Yes student can become the teacher. It happens in my makerspace almost everyday. #bcedchat
