#K12ArtChat is an #ArtsEd chat that happens every Thurs 8:30 pm CST founded by #TeamGrundler @ArtGuy76 & @GrundlerArt & share Ss' art on Fridays via #FabArtsFri.
Ahhh... A1: I'm in my 2nd year teaching choice, but 22nd teaching art.
Gotta say, teaching w/o choice bothered me for a long time! Didn't realize there WAS a choice option, and that elem kids could handle it. #k12artchat
A1 I've called it TABish, clay is a "tough taskmaster" and I feel it imposes constraints to learn to do well and grow over a year long course. #K12ArtChat
#K12ArtChat A1 I'm almost full choice but I also believe in scaffolding with the student directing what they wish to learn. I'm impressed with the level of engagement and acceleration in learning.
A1 I would call it moderate choice w/ a desire to move towards even more choice. Huge fan of creative & strategic constraints to get Ss thinking creatively w/ a solid place to start - give them the tools they need then trust them! #K12ArtChat#STEAMlearns#BISDinspires
#k12artchat A1: I'm a PK-5th teacher- More choice is offered in higher grades than in younger grades. I offer and allow as much choice as possible within a more structured project.
Checking in from Kansas! I teach elementary and practice TAB/choice with my 2-5th grade kiddos; Kinder and 1st are more teacher directed, but with choice. #K12ArtChat
A1: I teach a combo of Pre AP and regular art classes, 7th and 8th grade. Choice level depends on ability level for me but looking to change it up with my reg. Classes. #K12ArtChat
A1- opportunities for student choice have been increasing in my curriculum over the past few years. I tend to balance more open learning oops with guided skill building oops for my elementary students #K12ArtChat
A2: This sem. I’ve given the choice of seating, collaboration, and even material. I talk about trust and scaffold curriculum first. Class is so much more cohesive and confident! #K12ArtChat
A2 Students learn to trust their own ideas & embrace creative problem solving. Choice creates more authentic reflection/learning & it gives them OWNERSHIP! I call of of that a WIN! #K12ArtChat#STEAMlearns#BISDinspires
#k12artchat A2: Students are much more motivated to work hard and work creatively when they have choice! They are more engaged, and less behavior problems for me to deal with!
A2 Choice can be both a challenge and an asset. #k12ArtChat it’s great for teachers who have a lot of background, but can be difficult for generalists.
A1 - I want to go deeper into choice especially when I see how some Ss and classes thrive when working on projects that are 90% choice, BUT then I have Ss and classes that flail and only thrive when they get the opposite. I’m here to learn more! #k12artchat
#k12artchat This magnetic Artist Choice Board is what I started using for my early finishers, and it has made my life so much easier! The kids love it!
#K12ArtChat A3 My student artist proposals pose the question of How and Why are you doing this? How is this leveling up your work? They build in the constraints or challenges.
#K12ArtChat A1...I feel choice leaves it more open for students to be creative. I also like giving a bit of direction though then let them go create. 😀
A2 My students benefit from choice by putting the ownership of their projects on them: they choose what & how. A consequence is them learning that when they make their own artistic choices, they might fail—but learn at the same time. #k12artchat
A3 I feel I could write a book on my thoughs in this. To attempt to nut shell it forces an student to think creatively. Some students ooze creativity others it gives them hives- putting a lesson/unit-strategically allows for both to set their creativity free! #K12ArtChat
#K12ArtChat Q2...I think choice for students allows them to explore their ideas about the area we are learning about. My K-1 students still need more direction but i try to allow choice for them too.
A3: Constraints are challenging, and Ss learn from them. I had Ss do the Attachment Test and it really helped w their 3D work! https://t.co/HpzuXKQbqi#k12artchat
A3: When done well, constraints allow for more creativity w/ a starting point. These portraits were the result of answering the question "how can I create a mixed media portrait using at least 3 medias & 5 drawing techniques" 👏🏼 #K12artchat#steamlearns
A2 - problem solving seems to come more naturally. Ss want to get to solutions on their own whereas when it’s constrained too much or a lot, they just want me to tell them the answer. #k12artchat
A3 Without constraints or perimeters Ss sometimes get comfortable and don't want to budge beyond a certain size or building/embellishing methods. #k12artchat
#k12ArtChat A3: It's important to have strategic constraints to teach the foundational elements and principles of art, and to push the students further in their creative process. Without constraints, I find that subject matter and skills demonstrated can end up being more basic
A3 Strategic constraints in my classroom forces Ss to become “subject matter experts” with the materials & media I have available. Too much choice is overwhelming. For example: in our painting center we just have tempera cakes and watercolor. For now... #K12artchat
#k12ArtChat A4 I find applying costs of material, sustainability, using what is available, limit size, etc. are real life constraints that all artists are solving all the time. Most of it can be invisible to us.
A4: Maybe it is my design background, but I love showing my Ss any type of graphic designer - talk about constraints! Simplified designs & complex messages. #STEAMlearns#BISDinspires#k12ArtChat
A3 - For me, constraints vary wildly from class to class. It’s about tone, language, purpose and context. Also, depends on the skill they’re learning. #k12artchat
A2: My students benefit from choice because they are developing skills they need to become creative thinkers that will help them with problem solving & thinking skills. I have noticed a change in Ss engagement and they are less frustrated over their drawing skills. #K12ArtChat
Planning & testing out composition ideas for our Frank Stella inspired relief sculptures. The concept of Abstract Expressionism pushes students out of their comfort zones & helps them take creative risks 👏🏼 #K12artchat#STEAMlearns
#K12ArtChat BQ I educate my community on the benefits of ChoiceArt and I now use my Standard Based Rubrics and Portfolios to demonstrate my students learning. My scaffolding is my lesson plan.
#K12ArtChat Q5...Ss need to be prepared that they will not have everything they need to have endlessly. Problem solving skills are essential as a 21st century learner. Learning to be creative with all supplies available is a great skill. ☺
Sorry I missed this. A5 I think creative constraints are the catalyst to innovation. Employers, clients, life, always provides constraints. Creative minds see constraints as opportunities while others might see barriers. #K12ArtChat
BonusA- I hit points in planning and instruction through planned questioning, demonstrations of skills, student planning sheets, meaningful assessments, art history components, and reflections. #K12ArtChat
Inquiry driven lessons/units! Art is always answering a question & structuring instruction like this helps set Ss up to have plenty of choice! #k12ArtChat
A5 I wonder about the contrast between the openness of tech possibilities and the constraints of job opportunities. Also 🤔 about the role of creativity in an increasingly automated society. #K12ArtChat
In case you missed the questions & what to go back & add your thoughts here are tonight's questions #K12ArtChat transcript will post to @participate soon :)
#K12ArtChat...BQ...I feel like I am just getting more choice offered to Ss. I see Ss more often asking to complete artwork with different mediums than I thought about. IN has new standards that lean more towards choice and problem solving in art I think.
