A1: At my kids’ schools they do a lot of teaching about empathy at the elementary schools so it’s a lower number. Social media kicks in at middle school and the number gets bigger. #IAedChat
  • DuffysClassroom - Moderator Jan 13 @ 9:09 PM EST
A1: I would rate a 2. I am so thankful that our school community cares for each other and kids are willing to stand up to something that isn't right. Incidents here and there but overall, a positive, inclusive school that is not burdened with behavior or bullying. #iaedchat
  • JoveStickel Jan 13 @ 9:09 PM EST
A1 this is a tough one actual bullying I feel is around a 2 or 3 but kids being rude or not nice I see as a 6. #IAedChat
  • Mr_Lovio Jan 13 @ 9:09 PM EST
I can safely say our average is about a 6. Way higher in 5th & 6th grade #IAedChat
  • BlakeyMeghan Jan 13 @ 9:09 PM EST
A1: I see it as a 2/3... it’s not a big issue but it is something that has to be addressed from time to time with individual cases #IAedChat
  • CounselorMs Jan 13 @ 9:09 PM EST
A1: This is tough b/c for majority of Ss, our data shows this to be a 1-3 on any given day. But for those who are being bullied or perceive they are being bullied or ignored, it can be a 9 or 10 for them. But our data would say our MS is about a 3-4. #iaedchat
  • JoPrusha Jan 13 @ 9:09 PM EST

A1 I think it is a problem of 7 with regards to social media being the starting point. I think more "traditional" in school forms is not an issue. I really do not hear of it starting any other way then social media #iaedchat

  • JustinBlietz Jan 13 @ 9:10 PM EST
A1: Emphasis on standardized test scores and deemphasized SEL. Schools seldom take tame to systemically build community and focus on exclusion to deal w/ behavior. These things only increase likelihood of bullying behavior #iaedchat
  • gdorn1 Jan 13 @ 9:10 PM EST
    A1. Sometimes a 3 or a 4. It is addressed when necessary. #iaedchat
  • CounselorMs Jan 13 @ 9:10 PM EST
Yes, grades 5-7 or even 5-8 is where Bullying behavior and issues really seems to peek. Seems to coincide a lot with onset and height of puberty and newness to technology. #iaedchat

A1: This is challenging as the students that are affected the most tens to stay quiet. Based on our data, we're probably at a 4-5. #iaedchat
  • a_krehbiel13 Jan 13 @ 9:11 PM EST
A1: I would say a 4. We work on empathy and our counselor teaches lessons on the difference between bullying and just being mean. #iaedchat

A1: I’m thinking a 3 just because of social media and middle school. That being said I’ve learned that the majority of things described as bullying is really not bullying (per definition) and the words gets thrown around all too much. #IAedChat
    In reply to @danpbutler
  • CounselorMs Jan 13 @ 9:11 PM EST
Social media. Yes, that really steps it up in a big way. My own personal kids and several other kids don't have social media and they don't see nearly as many issues. #IaedChat

A1 #IAedChat 7-8, with so many means to bully, it’s hard to monitor/manage! Additionally, the definition of bullying is so broad it can’t be easily defined! District police departments in TX are limited in terms of what they can do. Complicated problem effecting ALL!
  • danpbutler - Moderator Jan 13 @ 9:13 PM EST
We are off to a great start this evening. Q2 is on the way in just one minute. #IAedChat
  • tjggmueller Jan 13 @ 9:13 PM EST
A1: I would say a 3 or 4. I don't see it so much in the primary grades where I spend most of my time, but I think by middle school and HS there may be some instances. I feel our school works quickly to resolve the issue. #iaedchat
  • BKd204Sci Jan 13 @ 9:13 PM EST
A1 I would say 5 or 6...a lot of bullying behavior goes on that we still know nothing about #iaedchat
  • danpbutler - Moderator Jan 13 @ 9:13 PM EST
A1.2: We also teach about the difference between peer conflict and bullying. The distinction is important. #iaedchat

A2 we put a focus on being mindful and live by an acronym of Honorable, Upstanding, Kind, Equipped. Respectful. When we talk to kids we use these words in our questions to them. It is recited daily. We also work a lot on conflict resolution when individuals have issue #IAedChat
  • DuffysClassroom - Moderator Jan 13 @ 9:17 PM EST
A2: I feel like we've got a lot going in the right direction. I would love to utilize our counselor more with regular guidance lessons. PBIS has been huge for us and kids respond well. It's staying ahead of whatever may be on the horizon that could impact kids. #iaedchat

  • CounselorMs Jan 13 @ 9:17 PM EST
A2 Many Ss know mean/bullying beahvior can't always be stopped, but they want to be heard. They want to know someone cares for them. Our staff knows this and tries to be a voice/an ear. Also, focused on this w/Ss....reach out to those who have been target. Ask if ok. #iaedchat
  • danpbutler - Moderator Jan 13 @ 9:17 PM EST
A2: We are striving to create an environment where students and staff members are valued and feel as though what they think, what they say, and what they do matter. Our trauma-responsive approach focused on a relationship-driven culture has helped to shape this. #IAedChat

  • JoveStickel Jan 13 @ 9:23 PM EST

  • CounselorMs Jan 13 @ 9:23 PM EST
A3: We talk a lot about "if you see something, say something". We have report forms & talk about how it doesn't need to be the target who reports it, but a friend/peer can report. We added an SRO to district & he is a go-to for Ss for outside school issues. #iaedchat
  • townsleyaj - Moderator Jan 13 @ 9:24 PM EST

A3: a huge part of this comes from building a culture of trust in a school. Kids aren’t afraid of being upstanders when there is a deep understanding of the harm of the behavior and the importance of treating others kindly & fairly. This comes through building empathy! #IAedChat

A5 A tough question for many schools. Our policy is to deal w/any issue that affects school day regardless when it happened. Most comes in via my office. I try to help solve/conflict resolve but if I can't, then it usually becomes bigger issue and we work w/it more. #iaedchat
