Welcome to #NGSSchat We’re so excited you’re joining us! Please remember to include #NGSSchat in your tweets! Our topic tonight is classroom culture and community!
I’m Jill from CA, President of @CAScience and a Regional Director with @K12Alliance and @EarlyImplement excited to spend the next hour with this awesome community. Did you hear, CA adopted computer science standards today! #NGSSChat#CANGSS#NGSS
I'm Leena from California and I am a Program Director for Science in @AlamedaCOE. Very excited to talk about culturally responsive science classrooms and how to address #allstandardsallstudents!
Hi all! I am Dianna from CT! I teach 6th grade science, adjunct college prof (el.ed.sci.methods), member of Achieve PRP & NSTA facilitator cadre. I love NGSS #NGSSchat
Hi! Chris Geerer, Michigan, 6th and 8th grade science. Just finished parent night! Pumped to explain to parents how cool the new standards are! #NGSSchat
Looking forward to tonight's topic as we recently started school in CT. Working in ss relationships, letting them dev expectations, and team building. All needed for NGSS. #NGSSchat
@NGSSchat#ngsschat This is the STEMcoding project. We create coding activities that are aligned with NGSS (because not enough people are doing this!) FYI our youtube channel is a big part of what we do. https://t.co/POdoDxPK3d
Q1: The connections we make often make the difference in our day. Let’s start the chat by sharing the story of a positive connection in your education life or a connection made with a student that made all of the difference. #NGSSchat
A1 My HS Bio teacher Ed Bierbaum developed a realistic relationship w/many of his Ss including me He taught me that relationship has to come first #NGSSchat
A1: My HS Physical Science T, Mr. Panion, was influential in my desire to become a science educator. He was intelligent, the course rigorous, and he helped to guide my curiosity about the natural world. #ngsschat
A1: I will mention a coworker of mine from Harcourt Brace. I was ~25 and she was ~65. She had us review a draft of Benchmarks for Science Literacy. Years later, she connected me to the Project 2061 staff, causing my career to shift from physics teacher to standards geek #NGSSchat
Q1: The connections we make often make the difference in our day. Let’s start the chat by sharing the story of a positive connection in your education life or a connection made with a student that made all of the difference. #NGSSchat
A1 “We don’t always need a teacher, because we know our goal and we learn from each other.” - Second grade student during a place-based project grounded in science #ngsschat
A1: I got a letter from a former student several years ago telling me about his amazing geology career. He gave me credit for igniting his spark. I pull it out on those tough days as a reminder. #ngsschat
Q1: Had a former s just graduate from college share with me that I inspired her to go into sci & become a prosthetic pediatric nurse. When prof asked her who inspired her she said told then was me who sparked her love for sci in 6th gr.lunch bunches, talks and sharing. #NGSSchat
#NGSSchat this story resonates with me because representation of women and women of color in the sciences have to be emphasized for our young people to see how diverse the field can be.
Q1: When I was in one of my teacher's classrooms, the teacher introduced me as "Dr. Bakshi" and said that I "help her teach science". The young girl responded, "So she's a scientist?" And the teacher said, "Yea!" and then she said, "She's brown like me! I can be a scientist too!"
A1 had a skater bring his board to class, so I told him to let me see the board and popped of an Ollie grab. Jaws dropped. Fun! One little trick earned his trust #ngsschat
A1: I got a letter from a former student several years ago telling me about his amazing geology career. He gave me credit for igniting his spark. I pull it out on those tough days as a reminder. #ngsschat
#NGSSchat A1: I had a few influential teachers in HS who just made me want to do better at science and life. I always strived to be that sort of teacher with that sort of impact when I was in the classroom.
Q1: a student that gave me a serious run for my sanity wrote me an email about a year after he finished my 9th grade class he told me that a) he was sorry for his rediculous behavior and b) because I never gave up he was turning it around and never looking for trouble #NGSSchat
A1: Where to start? I'm helping to open a building this year and the BEST comment on a Friday was "oh man! It's the weekend. Dang it! I really love home, but I've been having so much fun" <3 #ngsschat
A1 last year one of my classes went rogue during a lesson. They made a saying, “boom salt,” and would say it when things were mind blowing. My former partner teacher text me yesterday and said the kids were still coming up to him taking about it. Love it! #NGSSchat
A1:
My Ss saw me as someone who was passionate about begin creative (even though I couldn't draw) and used that to find their own path. I would share with my Ss how I was born a lefty, but my parents forced me to be right handed. I HAD to adapt to a different mindset. #NGSSChat
#NGSSchat this story resonates with me because representation of women and women of color in the sciences have to be emphasized for our young people to see how diverse the field can be.

A1/ Always tell parents at Back to School night about my struggle with my very bright but ADD son who now has an engineering degree from Purdue. They often reference it later in the year at conferences... #hanginthere#NGSSchat
A1: in my role as an adjunct prof...had a student this past semester so scared to teach sci. They emailed me telling me our talks and connections broke her fears. She even worked at a stem camp this summer. She credits my support. #NGSSchat
A1 had a skater bring his board to class, so I told him to let me see the board and popped of an Ollie grab. Jaws dropped. Fun! One little trick earned his trust #ngsschat
A1: A note from a recent grad shared that she not only believed she could science because she was in my class... she believed she could do ANYTHING. #whywedoit! #thebest#ngsschat She has and will change the world
#NGSSchat A1: today sister of a former student told me she landed a great environmental job in Portland,OR! She wrote me end of her senior year about how influential I was in her decision to pursue environmental! She spoke at Sloan award ceremony for me 2yrs ago! So memorable
Q1 Many say there are 2 essential aspects to classroom teaching and learning: figuring out & classroom community. What do you intentionally do to start the year to build community in your classroom? #NGSSchat
I have kids in for lunche in my rm instead of cafe. We play games, talk, sing, dance...whatever they want. It's a time to socialize with myself and their peers. Keep it 5 to 7 Ss at a time. I love it as much as they do. #NGSSchat
Q2: Many say there are 2 essential aspects to classroom teaching and learning: figuring out & classroom community. What do you intentionally do to start the year to build community in your classroom? #NGSSchat
A1 three years ago @cascience had our first "coaches event" (for TOSAs) I wanted to make a vid of Ks talking about Ts-a big snafu resulted in me asking former students (now in college)-all said yes and all commented on how a connection with a teacher made the difference #NGSSChat
#ngsschat A lot of what drives us is meeting college students who are eager to do cutting edge research using simulations, but were never shown how science & math relate to coding (despite some getting straight As in high school!) Lots of stories like this.
#NGSSchat
A1: My 7th grade students @IrvingISD taught me so much. One particular student stands out…he taught me so much about the LGBTQ community. This understanding has helped me throughout my education journey as I serve others. #ngsschat
Q1: The connections we make often make the difference in our day. Let’s start the chat by sharing the story of a positive connection in your education life or a connection made with a student that made all of the difference. #NGSSchat
A2 I intentionally use process that show all my Ss that they are relevant in my classroom & that their growth as a learner is important to me When Ss feel relevant they take more risks #NGSSchat
A2 I always like to start off with something that makes them collaborate on finding out something unknown or ambiguous. I’ve been using mystery tubes and puzzle cubes for the past two back-to-school seasons. #NGSSchat
A1: I used to just read my syllabus. Then I started spending a lot of time on building community and group norms. Now, I encourage teachers to learn about the different identities in the classroom, establish home-school partnership plans. Family engagement is key! #NGSSchat
Q1 Many say there are 2 essential aspects to classroom teaching and learning: figuring out & classroom community. What do you intentionally do to start the year to build community in your classroom? #NGSSchat
Q2: I start with team bldrs such as building tallest tower out limited supplies(spaghetti, 5 marshmallows, 1m tape)in 25 min. Also do chocolate river challenge, saving sam. They let me see how Ss work and communicate. Then they write expectations of Ss and sign. #NGSSchat
#NGSSchat A2: The mystery dice is my favorite beginning of year activity. My last year in the classroom I had found 5 or 6 different dice and one had no actual pattern, but man did my students try to figure one out!
Building the classroom culture is so important so on the first day we have converstion about thier ideas about science to get disc going and some group tasks and build from there #NGSSchat
A1# I am so fortunate to work with some very inspiring ladies that brought me into the science community. To whom I am very grateful. They’ve pushed my careers to places I never thought I’d go!#ngsschat
A2: (1/2) Highly structured and intentional team building activities. Day 1= TRIBES agreements & discuss behaviors which violate them. Day 2 = Ask Ss who they respect, and why. Then together they look 4 characteristics amongst who they respect & connect 2 TRIBES... #ngsschat
A2: Sounds crazy but we watch the clip from The Mighty Ducks where Coach Bombay talks about not being bullies or goons... and just being ourselves... then we chant along with "DUCKS FLY TOGETHER" part. It becomes a theme for our year and we leave no duck behind #ngsschat
A2 We start with literature and discuss the following Q's: What do scientists do? How do scientists think? "Science Verse" by Jon Scieszka and "Ada Twist Scientist" by Andrea Beaty are inspiring texts! #ngsschat
Q2: Many say there are 2 essential aspects to classroom teaching and learning: figuring out & classroom community. What do you intentionally do to start the year to build community in your classroom? #NGSSchat
A2: (2/2) Day 3 = Nature of sci/Tangram activity. Shapes rep knowledge; when new knowledge added, big pic changes. Day 4 = New Planet activity; choose who will populate new planet & discuss STS. Day 5 = syllabus & first science content #ngsschat#communityfirst
I take day 2-3 and have Ss create class learning norms along side of me Now it is OUR classroom & its a shared learning space Ss felt empowered after the process #NGSSchat
A2: I also make it a point to highlight men and women of color in the STEM fields and showcase cultures that have contributed to science that are not historically represented in eurocentric texts. Aaand to shed light on local phenomena such as the water crisis in Flint. #NGSSchat
A2: I do a lot of questioning Ss about themselves. I Google survey them, I make them do a mini art project, and I just ask questions. And I answer any question they pose to me, so far no crazy questions. And I use all the “data” throughout the year to connect with Ss. #NGSSChat
A2: To help Ss feel comfortable engaging with Phenomena & participating in share outs today we implemented quiet signals for "comment", "question", "agree" and "disagree". It REALLY helps my quiet students find their voices and keeps us all in an atmosphere of respect #ngsschat
A2: @MasteryCharter we are calling out the importance of having positive micro-moments with individual students and keeping a high ratio of positive to corrective comments to create a positive, productive classroom. #NGSSchat
I always jump right in to a science or engineering activity. Use that experience to start a discussion of collaboration. Working in groups is hard for elementary students. #ngsschat
Hi all! Busy but lurking. A2 I used to have Ss interview one another and present 30 sec elevator speech about the other to class. Helped me know the kiddos identities & interests a little bit. #ngsschat
A2: stem challenges are great to see Ss in action early on. Most Ss get involved. This challenge build tallest tower in 20min. Great pre assessment for Ss behavior. #NGSSchat
YES! I have a Google Form that I have Ss fill out on day 1 after we go over our community agreements. Kids are blown away when I ask them about something from the survey. "You actually READ those?!" #ngsschat
Yes! I've used Mystery Box activities with middle school students and teachers to build community and also make connections to the nature of science. #NGSSchat
I love this activity too-- we use it with parents to help them understand our focus on "figuring out", evidence, and working collaboratively. https://t.co/DaJXiqozPT#NGSSchat
A2/ Start with bar graphs of Ss school strengths. Everyone has different strengths and weaknesses. Follow with Gardner multiple intelligences inventory and how each S will be successful using unique strengths in science class. #ngsschat
A2 We also create agreements for how we will treat one another as we talk. We even voted on class claps for honoring thinking as needed. We used the agreements among my staff since we shared kids and looped for 3 years in MS. Consistency. #NGSSchat
In a slightly different role now, I do a ton of classroom walkthroughs during the first days of school. Them make a point to find kids in the hall and brag on them for being engaged. I want them to know that I appreciate their hard work. #ngsschat
A2: I love engineering challenges for this! The building together and redesign collab on ideal = squeal In addition to this we do morning meetings and a class contract where the Ss decide how to treat each other in class. #ngsschat
A2: @MasteryCharter we are calling out the importance of having positive micro-moments with individual students and keeping a high ratio of positive to corrective comments to create a positive, productive classroom. #NGSSchat
Q3: Please share a gamechanger in sustaining a community of practice in your classroom (routine, norm, strategy). Why is this share a gamechanger? #NGSSchat
A2 I think a single word for this one: RESPECT - Kids see right through teachers who don't respect them and view them from a deficit rather than asset perspective. So, to build community, find the good in your students and celebrate routinely it in meaningful ways #NGSSChat
I wanted to do this at the beginning of this year but didn't get my mystery box made. Going to put it on my docket for the beginning of next year for sure! #NGSSchat
In reply to
@frizzlerichard, @marismiller6, @stemwhitney, @TdiShelton
Yes! I've used Mystery Box activities with middle school students and teachers to build community and also make connections to the nature of science. #NGSSchat
A2: Working with adult learners now in my current role & I want to make these essential elements present in the PD communities I am a part of. Creating a community is easier for me…I need to up my game with a culture of figuring out! Others in this boat? #ngsschat
Pretty well. I have been happy with it generally speaking. It takes time to throw it and not catch it then pickup off the ground but it is usually caught any way. #ngsschat
A3:I do not set class rules/expectations. Ss do in small groups then collaborate in lg groups and vote on top5. All Ss then sign list and is posted. Ss feel valued and more invested. #NGSSchat
A3 Learning alongside students, asking questions and investigating with them makes the learning authentic. When students can share something new with their teachers the power dynamic shifts and the connections deepen. #NGSSchat
A3 I use table captains to run sm grps These Ss are my better communicators It is a gamechanger because all Ss can see that they can lead & be good at it #NGSSchat
Q3/ pairing alone zone with partner share prior to whole group discussions...routine helps kids find their voice and appreciate that shared ideas are really valuable. Promotes productive talk #NGSSchat
A3: Using TRIBES community agreements. Very easy to point to. Very clear to explain how Ss' (or T) behaviors may violate the norm. Allows powerful shift in language about how behavior interferes with our agreements instead of how students interfere. #ngsschat
#NGSSchat A3: My last year in the classroom, whenever students would discuss something with one another, I would give them some talk prompts to help facilitate from either @STEMTeachTools or derived from the TERC Talk Science Primer. Changed group discourse for the good!
A3- I change seats every week in the beginning of the year (B-day, alphabetically, etc). I change every two weeks after the first month. Kids learn to work with new people and do not want to hurt anyone because they may have to sit with them next week. #NGSSchat
A3 Learning alongside students, asking questions and investigating with them makes the learning authentic. When students can share something new with their teachers the power dynamic shifts and the connections deepen. #NGSSchat
A3 Explicitly teaching and assessing critical thinking skills has dramatically improved science discourse in my classroom. Effective reasoning, problem solving @ProjectZeroHGSE has many resources on protocols for critical thinking #ngsschat
Q3/ pairing alone zone with partner share prior to whole group discussions...routine helps kids find their voice and appreciate that shared ideas are really valuable. Promotes productive talk #NGSSchat
I give my Ss choice as to where they sit every 2 weeks I keep some control but they have more than they expect Has really helped class communication #NGSSchat
Putting money where my mouth is: Wrote a grant for parts to build AR Sandbox but lacked time and knowhow. Recruited HS students from @BHShelpdesk and voila!: https://t.co/2ecFGDSIrw#NGSSchat
2for10 challenge. 2 minutes of conversation with the same student, for 10 consecutive school days, about things unrelated to school. So powerful! #NGSSchat
#NGSSchat A3: My last year in the classroom, whenever students would discuss something with one another, I would give them some talk prompts to help facilitate from either @STEMTeachTools or derived from the TERC Talk Science Primer. Changed group discourse for the good!
A1: I taught 4th Grade math and science for my first 6 years and even when I changed schools I got a couple of invitations and thank you notes from former students when they were graduating from high school. Many of them going on to pursue science degrees #NGSSchat
#ngsschat A3: getting outside w senior environmental class to do birding w binocs, nature journaling. I think the connection to nature really encouraged a love of outdoors for urban NYC kids! Connected to material so much!
A2 One tip I learned when teaching MS was to send note home requesting "tell me about your child in 1 mill words or less". I found out cool things about my Ss (including birthing stories, no joke). I would re-read later in year if I was struggling with a student #NGSSChat

I think I’m in the middle of a gamechanger. Implementing modeling using whiteboards and student driven discussion thanks to @AMTAteachers training this summer. Seeing more engagement across the board. #NGSSChat
A3 - We practice how to have a whole class discussion. Ss practice tracking the speaker and active listening. These routines set up all Ss to engage in a posititive class discussion #NGSSchat
A3 make it a practice to NOT directly answer student questions and do activities in the beginning that are easy for all levels of students to experience some success of figuring out. Some don’t understand that THEY are capable enough to figure out! #NGSSchat
A3: Saying "I don't know" more often and following it up with "How could / should we investigate that". We are working to embrace wonder while accepting the BIG challenges and limitations #ngsschat
A3: honoring S wonderings. Allowing them time to investigate their questions (even the ones that are derailed from the intended learning) allows their voices to be heard and feel valued #ngsschat
2for10 challenge. 2 minutes of conversation with the same student, for 10 consecutive school days, about things unrelated to school. So powerful! #NGSSchat
A3: I also have used variations of the TERC talk moves. Being able to facilitate better conversations was the game changer for me! https://t.co/2Ptky1VIk7#ngsschat
#ngsschat A3: for freshman bio class changing groups for every unit project has allowed students to truly engages with so many students and be more willing by year's end to choose partners they never thought they would work with in Sept!
Hi #NGSSchat—Phil Bell from Univ of Washington & @STEMTeachTools showing up late (after a day of meetings that went long). Looking forward to catching up & sinking in a bit.
A2: I did the Sound Cups activity from @exploratorium Science snacks. Was a great way for kids to mingle and partner up and then work together to try@to duplicate the cups. #ngsschat
Q1 Many say there are 2 essential aspects to classroom teaching and learning: figuring out & classroom community. What do you intentionally do to start the year to build community in your classroom? #NGSSchat
I take the first 2 wks & look for Ss who can communicate w/peers I give them their seat first, then let other Ss pick where they sit I give the captains a job description so they know what their responsibilities are #ngsschat
A2: Try something you learned about that morning. It lets your students see that you are willing to try (and fail at) new things. And trust them to take the journey with you. #NGSSchat
Call for Ts to host! @NGSS_tweeps is almost full for Sept - Dec, but love to start filling Jan-April hosts! You know you want to share a week of your classrooms, the good, amazing, and I might rethink that moment, moment. Tweet or DM me! I'll add you! #NGSSchat
#NGSSchat This website is awesome when discussing building community with a focus on explicitly incorporating student identities: https://t.co/rIDz7ftiWg
I feel the figuring out piece is the hardest at any level. It's scary--- if we let them figure it out then how can we know that they actually did? It should be simple but 😬 true formative assessments for ALL in #ngss boggles me still #ngsschat
A3: I also have used variations of the TERC talk moves. Being able to facilitate better conversations was the game changer for me! https://t.co/2Ptky1VIk7#ngsschat
A1 Apologies if it was shared already. @educatordeb pulled together this great set of activities to build relationships & a safe learning community #NGSSchathttps://t.co/OmkZTnkziU
I think you are too. The Focus on Energy curriculum out of @TERCtweets demonstrates the power of student modeling and voice that you're sure to find. https://t.co/bMi6hzZmyQ#NGSSchat
In reply to
@meganrelmore, @AMTAteachers, @TERCtweets
A3 I branded ("GraceLab") and Ss knew they were a team and supported one another (ex, no moving on until everyone in the team was supported) No rows-Ss sat in groups and knew each S brought a strength to the group. So much more, but the simple idea of the group was big #NGSSChat
Q4: Discourse and equitable participation from students are critical elements of a positive classroom community. How do you encourage equitable participation in your classroom community? How do you monitor it? What questions do you have? #NGSSchat
Q4: Discourse and equitable participation from students are critical elements of a positive classroom community. How do you encourage equitable participation in your classroom community? How do you monitor it? What questions do you have? #NGSSchat
A4 My favorite was simple, "let the quietest voice speak first" I had speaking stems and such, but that simple request paused dominant voices and gave space for kids who struggled with language, didn't feel confident, struggled with the content #NGSSChat
A3: In the first few weeks of school, we establish routines of gaining perspectives that will help our brains grow and how to share feedback to inspire each other. This has helped with improving our designs and adding to our sense-making. #NGSSChat
A4: Building our capacity to deeply listen & view student contributions as resources to sense-making is a powerful strategy (from Warren & Rosebery). Quite complex—but we have a new @STEMTeachTools PD module we've piloted that focuses on taking this asset-based view. #NGSSchat
A4 one of our agreements when making discussion norms is that we all contribute in some way or another every week. If someone has spoken a lot they yield to the person who has said/contributed less. #NGSSchat
Q4 I love using tools paired verbal fluency and agree/disagree statements. Students have to talk, listen, and rephrase/repeat partner. With A/D, they can change their minds based on reasoning of other Ss, but need to explain why on paper when done. #NGSSchat
#NGSSChat A4: Technology has greatly enhanced our ability to include all voices on a digital discussion board. Schoology has served me well, and Padlet is also a great tool to share thoughts and ideas.
Q4/ I take the time to teach / model and critique discourse norms at the beginning of the course. S’s practice and reflect on the value of the norms. Productive Discourse leads to deep learning #NGSSchat
#NGSSchat So many of our Black students go through science classrooms without knowing the legacy of these Black scientists: https://t.co/NYtprqvPGR When we talk about #allstandardsallstudents, we have to actively retell these stories to our students.
Building trust through conversation is huge here. Kids need to know they are safe when they talk. The more you model what is expected and shut down inappropriate commnets the more participation you have. #NGSSchat
Q4: Discourse and equitable participation from students are critical elements of a positive classroom community. How do you encourage equitable participation in your classroom community? How do you monitor it? What questions do you have? #NGSSchat
#NGSSchat A4: Back to the student prompts... I had them in plastic sleeves and made students check them off as they used them (each kid=different color) Everyone had to have at least one mark and we had conversations about what happens when there were too many of one color!
Recently brought this to forefront of the @BurlMASchools elementary science educators. Using attached tool to help Ts recognize the level of discourse so they might identify places and spaces to deepen: https://t.co/07aznczcgk#NGSSchat
#NGSSchat So many of our Black students go through science classrooms without knowing the legacy of these Black scientists: https://t.co/NYtprqvPGR When we talk about #allstandardsallstudents, we have to actively retell these stories to our students.
I find that starting with a question that no one knows the answer to - a natural phenomenon or real life engineering problem - builds huge equity. My at-risk kids can question and problem solve as well OR BETTER than traditionally successful Ss #ngsschat@MTU_MiSTAR
A4: Two biggies for me have been wait time and awareness. Letting one response sit, acknowledge and affirm the S who provided the response, then read the room and see how it lands w/other Ss. Often times, body language says a lot and Ss will join if invited. #ngsschat
A4: When I taught I know I used way too much call and response. Felt like I was getting through but only a few Ss responded. Now when I model lessons I do more Think Pair Share, Turn and Talks, Discussion Diamonds, opportunities to write then speak...#ngsschat
Q4: Discourse and equitable participation from students are critical elements of a positive classroom community. How do you encourage equitable participation in your classroom community? How do you monitor it? What questions do you have? #NGSSchat
A4: The scariest survey I ever gave my Ss had questions about their voice in our classroom. What opportunities are provided in our classroom & can I make this better? Have you ever been left out of a conversation/activity? The flood gates opened…I found my blind spots! #ngsschat
Q4: Discourse and equitable participation from students are critical elements of a positive classroom community. How do you encourage equitable participation in your classroom community? How do you monitor it? What questions do you have? #NGSSchat
A4: Have used a lot of Cooperative grouping/ learning strategies-from @KaganOnline They allow for more discussion among students and I make sure it’s structured so that every student gets a chance to talk. We did a “round Robin” today and my Ss all had something to say #ngsschat
Q4: Discourse and equitable participation from students are critical elements of a positive classroom community. How do you encourage equitable participation in your classroom community? How do you monitor it? What questions do you have? #NGSSchat
This is crucial. The Bang et al. chapter from the @NSTA practices book also emphasizes the importance of showing diverse CONTEMPORARY science—to highlight the ongoing contributions happening into the future. #NGSSchat
A4 sorry to join so late! We have group learning routines that are embedded into our curriculum materials to encourage equitable participation. https://t.co/mQBr00etRG#NGSSchat
A3: I purposely draw models different from the students and rather messy and then have them try to “support” me. So helpful when there are students in the class who struggle to put a pen on paper. Models are not always easy but they are FUN! Models connect us! #NGSSchat
A4. I like to use chart paper for student brainstorming and will often give students their own color. If I ask a series of ?s on seperate chart paper s’s will rotate with their own symbol or color. to add on their ideas ( no repeats) #NGSSchat
A4 sorry to join so late! We have group learning routines that are embedded into our curriculum materials to encourage equitable participation. https://t.co/mQBr00etRG#NGSSchat
A4: students speak in the language the are most comfortable in (so in my area this is Spanish) discussions are a mix of students speaking in Spanish and English and my bilinguals translate for their peers . #ngsschat
A4: Equitable Participation begins w/ all Ss making sense of the experiences. One powerful way I help to ensure access & equity is through sense-making notebooks. Also, productive partnering & #MakingThinkingVisible routines also hold all Ss accountable for learning. #NGSSChat
A4 Science Talks, equity sticks, peer critique and @TheNSRF expansive library of protocols for inside the classroom as well as PLC's - How can we @EarlyImplement lead to ensure every student is getting Science in CA? #ngsschat
A4: The silent signals help my more tentative Ss share as we removed the fear of interruptions; or think-pair-share and have one share from their group -- sometimes it important to remember not every student has to speak to have their contributions heard #ngsschat
A4 I have also jigsawed articles based on reading level for expert groups, but kicker is they all have a slightly diff slant. Then, make them circle up, 1 from each group, noticings from their article, all share, and then popcorn discuss. All voices heard. #NGSSchat
#NGSSchat resource: discussion protocols have also been a great help in ensuing equity in classroom discourse- give it structure! https://t.co/AS07EK9CjI
A4: students speak in the language the are most comfortable in (so in my area this is Spanish) discussions are a mix of students speaking in Spanish and English and my bilinguals translate for their peers . #ngsschat
A4: I also use sentence starters for help Ss build off each others ideas during discourse, hang in room. We start by referring to Ss established expectations before beginning discourse, this is displayed on projector for all to see. #NGSSchat
A4: Equitable Participation begins w/ all Ss making sense of the experiences. One powerful way I help to ensure access & equity is through sense-making notebooks. Also, productive partnering & #MakingThinkingVisible routines also hold all Ss accountable for learning. #NGSSChat
Q5 Many say there are 2 essential aspects of 3D teaching and learning: community and figuring out. How does the sense of community and feeling of belonging impact student ability to figure out, problem solve or think critically? #NGSSchat
Another key to all of these questions is to explicitly plan your first discussion/ first modeling assignment to go through norms and expectations. Often I let them try, then explain how they can improve and expectations and let them try again. #NGSSchat
A4 In their framing of equity in STEMed, @CalabreseBarton & Tan highlight the need for students to have a RIGHTFUL PRESENCE in STEM learning environments across scales of justice—which are many. Such a powerful framing! Do students feel they have a rightful presence? #NGSSchat
A4: asking questions in which there are no wrong answers ‘What do you notice?’ ‘What do you wonder?’ Helps students share because not afraid of being ‘wrong’#NGSSChat
Q5 Many say there are 2 essential aspects of 3D teaching and learning: community and figuring out. How does the sense of community and feeling of belonging impact student ability to figure out, problem solve or think critically? #NGSSchat
A4 We need to remember it is more important that all voices heard, and it may occur in small group more than large group. Large group would be great, but some are shy. I looked for that small group voice for all. #NGSSchat
A4 Brianna Reilly @MsB_Reilly shared the Equity Map app (say that 10 times fast) with me https://t.co/OLKrPiYnHm You can use it to track conversation in the classroom. Is all conversation through the teacher? Or are students talking to and responding to each other? #NGSSChat
One that stands out…will stay with me forever. Mrs. Burks you include a lot about your culture, but my culture is not one of the "normal" one's within the classroom and when will we use examples that include the way we live? #ngsschat

#NGSSchat A5: Classroom community and belonging gives them the sense it's ok to fail because the class has your back. When they feel safe to fail, they feel safe to figure out, problem solve, or think critically
Glad you like them!! I want everyone to know that we could always use more. :-) So if you have info you'd like to share around a specific problem / opportunity of practice, please get in touch! #NGSSchat#taxpayerdollarshardatwork#NSFfunded
This really is tough for me. I've used popsicle sticks, random #'s, project work protocols to encourage equity. It's difficult when the levels of Ss are so extreme.
Recently brought this to forefront of the @BurlMASchools elementary science educators. Using attached tool to help Ts recognize the level of discourse so they might identify places and spaces to deepen: https://t.co/07aznczcgk#NGSSchat
Q4: Discourse and equitable participation from students are critical elements of a positive classroom community. How do you encourage equitable participation in your classroom community? How do you monitor it? What questions do you have? #NGSSchat
A5:Ss need a sense of trust to take risks. This is needed to help Ss become more critical thinkers. When Ss feel safe, they will push other Ss intellect further and dig deeper into the process of learning. A strong community promotes Ss growth. #NGSSchat
