HW Mindset Shift: Working – Learning; Points – Performance;
Compliance - Ownership of learning - Kathy Vatterott
I feel your pain about sending your son off to college! I'm in the same boat.
homework should be less about compliance and more about ownership of learning - to do this, first remove the threat of hw grades

If on Twitter, you want to be Twitterpated! Great info!
Silence is a gift we need to start giving to one another in a world full of noise
Thinking of you! I'm at in Atlanta, in a session on cog neuroscience. $10 says they mention Mary Helen!
okay team, I hope you're ready!

the avg person only listens with 25% proficiency
It's important to generate excitement for an unconference / Edcamp prior to the event. Get people thinking. Build interest.

The average person only listens 25% of the time. Effective Leaders are GOOD listeners - active!
Gr8 2 say hi to John Antonetti;he made such + impact in my years that I still take w/me tdy!
: To teach kids responsibility, make them responsible for their learning, not their working (mindset shift)
listening skills: probing, deflecting, advising opens up doors to trust
Ts with focus say "keep your eyes on me. I've got you". Ss feel cared for--
When you actively listen: you probe; you deflect; and you reflect.
We were famous at ASCD16! I enjoyed meeting you all! curriculumblog atwaterd cristama mattwachel https://t.co/A9NNC8bJHL …
Homework doesn't teach responsibility. It teaches compliance.
If we stop giving HW how will we teach responsibility? Get a dog. HW teaches compliance. make responsible for learning not working.
Trust, over time, can erode. It is something you need to continually build.
to build trust, need to make ppl feel safe, valued, informed
Leadership :Getting others to do what you want done b/c they want to do it.
scales really well. Building the schedule / board is an excellent community building activity.
5 levels of respect: follow bc you have to, want to, who leader is, what ldr has done for org, what ldr has done for others

Hey teachers - great idea: on each test, put the # of missing HW next to the grade. Ask Ss to graph the relationship.
The best ideas are not just captured in the heads of individuals - the best thinking for a room is often found in the room itself.
You were such a big part of our presentation today with so many stories & pictures of Room 41. Wish you were with us.
OH. MY. GOODNESS. https://t.co/VihxMJY0Tj
Hey teachers - great idea: on each test, put the # of missing HW next to the grade. Ask Ss to graph the relationship.

I find myself again in the presence of one of my heroes who played a huge part in learning to teach with confidence.
Edcamp norm #1: WE (the Ts in attendance) build the schedule. Could be a passion, an interest (school/class related), or a question.
Follow me! Jumping back into the Twittervese now that my PhD is finished! Technology.learning.libraries.leadership

It's been awesome; can't wait till next year!
Wonder if my district has a Twitter chat to communicate with teachers, families and the larger community?
Edcamp norm #2: Everyone participates. ("Don't come to a buffet and not eat anything." )
"Time keeps on slipping into confusion" attendance and participation.-You are appreciated. Cwashington https://t.co/iX2rBrb9va
Games and Relationships Types: Luck; Strategy; Luckegy.
We should live in a world of interest rather than wants.
The world pivots on positions and interests
can't just eliminate HW. must replace w/Ss ownership and empowerment can you say eportfolio & SLC? https://t.co/mMKPU2Wjci
Strategic Relationships: Professional or Personal; Plan before engaging
The use of word "host" is deliberate. Treat edcamp like a dinner party. If you host a party & do all the talking, no 1 comes back.
As teachers, we think our tasks are infallible. Cause that's the way we learned it.
If you do not express your interest, you do not get them met.
In negotiation you must lead with your interests
Vision, pattern, emotion integral to learning
Norm #3: Vote w/ your feet. If you're in a space where you're neither actively contributing / listening, you're encouraged to leave.
