Brr Morning from Diane in MetroWest Boston!
A1. Assistive tech can be anything (high or low tech) that allows Ss to see success. Diif. is about meeting learners where they are
Good morning good people. Juli-Anne! Here!
Assistive tech are tools used to help Ss learn academically through the continuum as a form of differentiation
Lisa from Texas. I won't mention how warm it is here out of respect for the folk in the cold!
A1: differentiation=creating instruction/assessments/etc that meet individual needs of learners
A1: Assistive tech is ANY tool that assists with completion of a task. low tech to high tech
A1: is only as good as the person who is planning; assistive tech does just that assists a good plan
Heyoooo - China checking in!! Glad you could join
Up early, so today instead of my usual Katie from Saskatchewan, Canada.
Hi Jon. We just received our StW designation this year! Great experience for our school
A1: differentiation is different approaches to learning delivery, style, level, need & assistive tech is an implementation tool.
A1. For instance, you would certainly use assistive tech to help you differentiate and meet learners where they are!
Glad you see this topic. Important at univ level.
Dyslexia - omnipresent in my family thru generations.

WELCOME TO
Using Tech to Engage Students w/ Learning Disabilities
Authors:
Mods:
Hey Billy Scott and Brad .
A1: assistive tech=using devices/software/programs/etc to meet the needs of learners
Asst tech allows Ss to access the gen ed curr. Differ changes the curriculum. Two different playing fields! https://t.co/A9v0ZYBMtQ
Q1: Do you know the difference between differntiation and the use of assistive technology?
Happy Saturday, ! Valerie, Elem Principal from Houston.
A1-I see assistive tech as tools S need to access core curriculum and differentiation as the process of providing the core to all S
Leaving frigid NY soon to go to visit the family in sunny and warm AZ! Can't wait.
A1. For me differentiation is about the "What" the level of content Ss needs. Assistive tech is about the "how" the tools
A1: Diff includes all aspects o learner. Adapat tech helps child access learning resources through a ‘mode’ – 1/2
A1) AT enhances learning in areas where SpN Ss struggle, promotes differ. instruct. & a positive learning environ. for all
A1: (2/2) supporting one of their senses. It’s about how they ‘do’ in order to think.
A1 Assistive technology allows a person to accomplish a given task. Differentiation modifies approach to meet the person's needs.
Great topic today, one of the things I wanted to solve in the beginning:) Simple to do WITH good leadership:) cc:
Good Morning Henry HS principal in MA, excited to join you today.
A1 I did not- learned from this resource I found: 8 Examples of Assistive Technology and Adaptive Tools https://t.co/NTEkPrB4SB
Yes! exactly https://t.co/7B2cuqa15I
A1. For me differentiation is about the "What" the level of content Ss needs. Assistive tech is about the "how" the tools
A1 Differentiation should be done for all students regardless of ability level. Meet students where they are at and then push.
A1) In my world, we only talk about assistive technology for supporting special education students.
A1 Differentiation addresses different learning modalities.
A1: differentiation might be based on skill, strategy, interest and Ss choice, but assist tech is about access to learning
A1) differentiation adjusts curriculum, environment, product or process. Asst. tech. adjust accessibility to those things.
A1. Asst Tech is a tool that helps Ss and removes barriers to learning.
A1 Differentiation is the adjustment of the instruction to meet S needs. Assistive technology are the tools.
Sorry I'm late! Pam, Sped&Intervention teacher, Charleston, SC.
YES! Love the low-high tech! I used to use pic boards as speech therapist.
AT provides support for something that a Ss cannot do ie. let a S who cannot eye read ear read
A1. Outcomes are same: engage/learn/demo w tech or tool for the intended student. Difference is the population enabled by it.
differentiation has to do with the instruction and assistive tech are tools to help those who need the help be successful
A1 having a document projector helps visual learners see details in text or print shared reading
A1: until we let children determine what their own individual needs are, differentiation is just a word we say
A1: True differentiation is about teaching in ways that support the in your classroom; tools are a part of the strategy
-10?! It's -38 in Winnipeg, Canada right now! Want to trade?!
A1 differentiation is for the learning personalization the tech is the assist you figure out that engages the leaner
A1: assistive tech is a tool, differentiation is a strategy to get each kid exactly what they need from the lesson.
A1 Assistive is how they access or demonstrate knowledge, differentiation is what they're accessing.
DI allows students to engage in ways that best meet their learning interests, needs and styles
A1: I use assistive technology (specifically iPad apps) to accommodate for my spec Ed students... I differentiate for all
Great explanation. I think you can look at the base of both terms to see what they both do
Hello neighbor! Western NY! FREEEEEEEEZZZZZZING!
A1: Ts can differentiate process by using assistivet tech or using asst tech may be 1 way to accommodate - but they're not the same
A1: Differentiation provides various ways for learning for Ss. Adaptive technology is the tool for implementation.
A1: Assistive tech = tools to empower learners w/LD. Differentiation = adapting the task to fit the needs of the learner.
A1 is meeting the individual needs of students. U can use assistive tech to differentiate for Ss w/disabilities.
Good morning! How are you?
Checking in on a chilly afternoon from Brussels, Belgium
leadership is at the heart of many things in education! https://t.co/UXadfW0kCK
Great topic today, one of the things I wanted to solve in the beginning:) Simple to do WITH good leadership:) cc:
Of course I am, I help plan it :))
We need to follow the SAMR Model and ask, how are we Modifying and Redefining tasks to meet our students personal and individ needs
Yes! https://t.co/3UPWD6k2j1
A1: True differentiation is about teaching in ways that support the in your classroom; tools are a part of the strategy
A1: assistive tech is a means to help differentiate, it's not the only way to do so.
A1 AT compensates deficit (i.e. voice tools); differentiation modifies instruct/assess to maximize strengths/interests of all S's
A1. Assist. Tech should be a means or tool for differentiating for struggling students. Diff is finding means 2 ensure ALL Ss learn
Asst tech allows the Ss to access the gen ed curriculum from its originality. Diff. meets the Ss where they need to be.
A1.) Assistive Tech can fall under the umbrella of differentiation utilizing tools from no to high tech https://t.co/6drPffJMKy
Hi friend!!!!! Staying warm??????
Kelly - NJ A1: Differentiation applies to the method used to reach the Ss; AsstTech would be the vehicle used to implement method
A1: assistive tech more than just a piece of tech, but using it 2 "assist" w/ learning; Differentiation-adapting content to learner
Yes agree-DI=content, product, process. Asst. Tech=access https://t.co/mxk9ojrDXY
A1) differentiation adjusts curriculum, environment, product or process. Asst. tech. adjust accessibility to those things.
Great topic today on .
Jump in!
https://t.co/lKl3zRLXTY
A1: True differentiation is about teaching in ways that support the in your classroom; tools are a part of the strategy
Ha, it's cold here in Atlanta -> Where is spring?
A1
Differentiation = using variety of ways to teach variety of students
Assistive Tech = using power of tech to help students learn
Love using and referring to the SAMR model.
Absolutely! Use mine ALL the time!
I agree. I believe the modification in education is vital: helps educated all different Ss learners & styles
A1: differentiation and assistive tech BOTH personalized to meet the needs of the learner
Differentiation addresses individ. Ss learning challenges, strengths and abilities through process, product, content and concepts
A1a: Differentiation is developing a solid relationship so you know how to customize tools/instruction to meet needs of each S....
Bight and early! Happy to participate in today.
A1 Diff applies to any student. Asst Tech is necessary tool for SpEd Ss to access to learning.
What Wes said. https://t.co/mIM7uzr8K7
A1: assistive tech is a tool, differentiation is a strategy to get each kid exactly what they need from the lesson.
A1: Assistive tech is specific focus / access to equip, software or app connected to a learner profile - often special ed.
A1) Differentiation is for all. Assistive is to give students access to learning content.
A1b …assistive teach is augmenting differentiation with specific techn/tools to enhance learning further (per IEP or otherwise).
A thicker pencil can be just as much assistive tech as a laptop.
Differentiation: modification to appropriately challenge all Ss
Assistive Tech: item/equip used to help Ss w/ a disability function
A1: 1/Interesting. As a professional, I use "assistive tech." Dictate articles, solve w sheets, schedule, collab, organize.
I agree w/ this. Backwards Design, begin with desired outcomes, use Tech to accomplish those learning goals & skill
It's 19 degrees and with the wind who knows. I miss living in Miami and the USVI.
Morning all! Karlie joining from Winnipeg, Canada. MY math/sci T ☺️
A1: assistive tech = tools inside a big bag of differentiations
Well said https://t.co/ntnIEfQ3Mr
A1a: Differentiation is developing a solid relationship so you know how to customize tools/instruction to meet needs of each S....
A1: I see differentiation as flexible, shifting depending on the goal and the learners in relation to the goal. AT is more fixed.
offers choice of tools 2 access curricula 2 all our kids - 100s imaged in AT suite on every stdnt device
Q1 diff=modifying the activ to meet student needs asst tech= hi/low tech to allow student to interact with enviro to optimize lrng
A1. Also, assistive tech is often a vehicle to differentiation, not necessarily the driver itself.
Having a good teacher who has as document projector and knows how to use it really really helps visual learners...
A1: Differentiation should improve student engagement by presenting info at best level for ind S learning.
Learn about reaching ALL students using tech. Inclusive Tech Institute 6/25/16 Denver (day b4 ) https://t.co/gZZ8kN2xWl
A1: Differentiation is instruction given to a group of students who need the same skill. Assistive tech. is device that helps.
A1: Isn't differentiation simply good teaching? Tech use should be designed to support all learners.
Morning , coming on a few minutes late. Quinn Rollins, history teacher & curriculum specialist, Salt Lake City.
A1: 2/ I've stopped calling it "assistive tech" now call it "best practice" or "I make money doing it, so you should use, too, kid"
I love using Doc Camera in my Readers and Writers Worskhop, but have gone to flipped model in Mathematics,
Love this! For me, much personalizing learning has to do w/ the intentionality of the Qs I ask to support Ss thinking
Haha! I am just looking forward to seeing you guys! Now if is there?
Good Morning Scott from Texas along w/Rocky and Bullwinkle. Up making final prep 4 Sat Sch - geometric pancake design competition!
A1 Differentiation refers to effective teaching strategies to help all Ss. AT can help Ss access learning opportunities
A1 Differentiation is a practice of teaching to different kinds of learners & assistive tech are tools to help those learners
A1: We differentiate by content, process &product. Ss get either orall tailored2 Their learning style so Their learning is prsnlzd
AT opens doors and allows Ss to engage with the world
That's why you are a great educator!
Exactly. Different paper.....
Good morning. Brad from independence a little late
Q2 What are ways you encourage students to take notes?
Q2 What are ways you encourage students to take notes?
A2: Invite Ss to use collaborative notes on - everyone contributes & shares ideas.
Great to be here with guys!
IF we try to differentiate for every student then it's likely we differentiate poorly for all students.
A2 SMARTPEN If any note they took is unclear, can touch it with smartpen &replay what was said at that exact point in the lecture.
that whole Celsius thing confuses me. Is -38 warmer or colder than -10F?
A1 Differentiation: modify content or methods of teaching, Assistive tech.: tool to enhance an individual's performance
I read somewhere that technology can give some children a voice who can otherwise not feel comfortable speaking up ....
A1 Differentiation is adaptive lessons/strategies that meet all learning styles & assitive tech aids disabled Ss like meditalker
Every student learns diff and at their own pace -differentiation
Good Morning . Burning to learn!
Indeed! Differentiation is SO much more technology. Starts with relationship, trust, & connections.
A2: I use modified Cornell notes, which I model w a doc camera. I build each lesson & activity into an interactive notebook.
An engaged and invested students is the goal for sure for all students. Greetings Steve.
Susan Maurus, K-5 principal in Detroit suburb, lurking today to learn more
Really looking forward to this event, trying to get a co-workers to attend too, who've never been to EdCamp https://t.co/ZWLVV8riVu
Do you use and/or for your flipped lesson? At HS level, limits lecture& inc discussions.
A1: Assistive tech opens the 'way, creating personalized paths' for Ss to journey onward to meet the learning targets.
I keep seeing the phrase "give access to learning." Just means get them to learn what we say they must, no?
A2: I tutor a very S who has to handwrite notes…please stop this practice!
Brad!!! Good morning, my friend!
One of my favorite tools ever! That and anchor charts in big print around the room.
A2 Take a picture, use a recorder. As a dyslexic I can process the information better if by not writing at the same time.
A2) Teaching visual notetaking.Modeling. Showing notes from famous people's notebooks.
true - key point being the T (and the S) need to know ways to use tools provided
A1: Differentiation is built in to support the spectrum of learning levels, needs and styles for access, learning, and assessing
A1: Knowledge of your students comes before differentiating for their needs, potentially with the tools of assistive technology.
Anyone here going to on Monday?
I know loves pens for supporting Ss with note taking
Agree. Sometimes it evens the "playing field" for Ss. Perform to best of their ability.
A2 Voice Typing in Google Docs
I ask that my students get guided notes. Definitely helps. Then we review in assisted learning centers. Recording sometimes too
A2. Ss can take notes anyway that works for them: traditional, digital, sketch notes. It's not a one size fits all.
A2 Start with Cornell notes; every T in the bldg using same format, then tweak it now and then to keep it fresh, but not confusing
is trending on Twitter in
So thankful for THIS Tricia!!!
but do we ever ask why the child is uncomfortable?
A2Offer students pre printed notes as a guide for them to participate and add their thoughts
A2-I know there are many methods but believe we often focus too much on "taking" and not "understanding" notes and purpose for Edu
q2 can't beat mind mapping
A2. Notes don't have to be purely written. I'm a big fan of . Why not incorporate the visual with the written?
What about student directed learning?
How so? Can I say, "Here are the objectives," and give choice or give Ss the ability to pitch something better?
So happy to see the brilliant and moderating this morning
A2: Provide options for notes. Audio synced with print, such as or Mic Note for Chrome
A2 Make the experience more engaging/interesting by using technological devices they enjoy.
A2: I actually encourage them to take pics of my notebooks, anchor charts, etc if they need to
A2 Adapted notes...diff levels/formats for different Ss. Create experiences that show the purpose & use of notes so Ss see the why!
Our book is out for sale "Using Technology to Engage Students With Learning Disabilities" - https://t.co/PgmbuqhcCN
With all the fantastic answers to Q1, proves to be a valuable tool to differentiate PD. Not just the input, but the feedback!
A2 I encourage taking a picture or use a recorder. As a dyslexic I can process the information better by not writing at same time.
Personalized learning can be about tech. PL is ALWAYS about finding ways for Ss to connect, personally, to their learning.
A2) I've observed students voice recording, taking pictures, and using shared documents for note taking.
Q2: Structured notebook sections with quarterly reflection & assessment
A2 also loving Sketchnotes -- it's the kind of notes I personally take, it works better for me.
AT provides access and ability to engage in the curriculum by Ss whether they are differentiated curriculum activities or not .
A2) Encouraging students to use their fave pens/paper. Graphic organizers - let them create them in SmartArt.
A2 Ultimately, the method that works best. First, model w graphic org, running rec, notebook, docs, camera then Ss decide best tool
A2: Simplest way: take a picture of the notes!
A2 Apps like Dragon and SnapType, also give meaning to notes ex: becomes study guide for quiz or outline for project
A2: learn various ways so they have a choice. Love 2 column with drawings/visual notes & text. Doodles r learning & synthesis 2!
A2: is a great tool. Ss noting taking should be based on individual learner. Notes are for comprehension; lets Ss decide
how can the idea possibly coexist with pre-ordained and scheduled curriculum?
A1 assignments should have the space so Ss can differentiate for themselves, not assumed by teacher. Tech or no, Ss choose
A2. Speaking for myself, I've also found collaborative notetaking to be a tremendous help to my learning.
A1 Differentiation is often tcher determined - kids need to learn to build their own toolbelt choices
DIFFERENTIATE up or down? Is purpose to help all students master same lesson, or different levels of mastery?
A2: I take notes w/ them to model different strategies/organizations/formats/etc
A2: we encourage a variety: sticky note jots, sketches, notebooks, google docs, dictation, audio/video recordings, padlets, etc.
A2 ugh. Notes. Why write down anything that you can look up? Teach kids to think, not regurgitate.
A2 I like using tools like a structured journal to support documentation, metacognition + inquiry like... https://t.co/yA0OKPZdg3
Yeah, if we're not allowing them to do this...I don't know why we're teaching in 2016. https://t.co/aMj5sr6vcT
A2: I actually encourage them to take pics of my notebooks, anchor charts, etc if they need to
7 min. Length of time it took me to get bored on the treadmill for calf rehab. Thus checking in on from Qatar. Morning/afternoon!
A1. Assistive is exactly as it states. It assist a S. While differentiate means 2have different approaches to concept.
A2: sometimes it's best just to have them listen, and review other's notes later! 😉
A2: Any way that's meaningful to them. I show examples & templates & let them choose.
not sure that taking pics of YOUR notes is encouraging Ss. It's modeling, yes - but they need to DO
Great point Mike. Sometimes Ss don't need to use tech to complete an assignment. Don't force tech use https://t.co/mOShXER85l
A1 assignments should have the space so Ss can differentiate for themselves, not assumed by teacher. Tech or no, Ss choose
I use this when I write & have encouraged my reluctant writers (at home, too). Game-changer for some! https://t.co/uUoRw59OcX
A2 Voice Typing in Google Docs
- wow, your student doesn't have IEP addressing use of tech or 504 modifications?
RT : Assistive tech are tools used to help Ss learn academically through the continuum as a form of differentiation
A2: Gdoc organizers, can type into, voice tools, etc. If part of organizer is blank, S knows to ask Q... missed something
A2: Good note taking is being able to identify what is important and organize it. Make it a detective game to build this skill.
Good place to start, grow from there...
I think this is great- Do you/ your Ts worry about having their lectures recd? Have sug it, but no adoptees yet.
A2: any way that makes sense to them. I provided Ss w/ tips, but they need to make it their own. AT allows for addition of voice
our Ss love that. And they also find the commenting feature useful for collaboration!
A2: Snapshot of the notes; highlighting key points; Ts modeling thinking strategies during discussions
A2: Cornell notes are great. There is a Google extension also that is helpful for Ss.
A tool like Notability let’s students sketch, type, write, record all in one place!
hello again, Jim. Do we really allow that in schools though?
A2: My ss spend very little time taking notes. If they do, it's usually by way of a concept map or GO. Doing/creating > note-taking
A2: depending on notes, I have let them draw them in the past, choose their own method
A2) Would love to see more in classrooms. That is a tool that would've helped me as a student!
A2) I have observed some successful old school methods. Students start w Post-It notes then organize them into presentation apps.
A2: Pic notes, voice to text, collaborative notes, color coded... show variety of poss so Ss can experiment & see what works 4 them
A2 Teach students several viable options & let them determine what works for lrng style/needs/situation
There are lots or reasons Lindsy! Don't you do that in "real life" all the time?
Charts are powerful when created w/ the class. We add to them as we continue to learn.
A2: Schools should not assume Ss know how to take notes. However the best strategy is the one that works for the individual S.
A2: make note taking personal each kid (picture, record, Cornwell, what works for them), then let them use notes 2 see value.
A2: We give them choice to use hardcopy or digital. I encourage G docs for collaboration. Ts use Cornell notes.
A2: Have them take pic. Give notes with blanks they fill in to keep them engaged but not slow them down.
A2: Use google docs to share for notes bc all ss had a copy and can contribute to it.
A2: Differentiate note taking: Typing on Google Docs, Graphic Organizers on Google Draw, Google Voice feature on Google Docs
Goodness knows it helps me focus during interminable meetings...hopefully our classes are more engaging
Printed notes given to student ahead of time with a highlighter.
A2 we have students keep perfect logs. Since there isn't any lecture, there really aren't "notes" to take
AT and ICT greatly tesching. It must be accompanied though with Quality teaching from the heart and NOT the textbook
Let’s continue to talk AT! Join us every Wed night @ 8PM for
note taking maybe old school but it works for me
A2: interactive notebooks, and reading notebook using modified version of Cornell notes. Would love to try sketch noting.
Differentiation is modifying the instruction and/or content to meet the needs of all learners.
A2 I like for students to create their own anchor chart for concepts
A2: collaborative note-taking; S's help each other fill gaps and take notes in way that means something to them
I also try to model the difference between and distracted doodling. BC I do both. :)
today is more than enough winter for me...
Agree! Interesting that many don't realize that low tech can also be assistive tech.
Amen to this! Thanks Henry https://t.co/yvZRAmbAEf
A2: Schools should not assume Ss know how to take notes. However the best strategy is the one that works for the individual S.
A2: An HS ICR T, mod Cornell notes provide great note taking guides and a study guide. a 2 for 1!
A1. Both DI & AT methods/tools 2 help address & work on critical ?: How is he/she smart (vs. How smart is he/she)?
Good morning ! Jacqueline, NJ social studies teacher, joining the chat late & working my way through the earlier discussion.
I have tried to incorporate art more into my ELA instruction.
A2: Double column: What I am learning/ What I think about what I am learning
as teachers, we differentiate in all things to do what's best for each student to learn and grow. Each answer hint, seat change...
great to hear that all your T's use a similar way of taking notes, helps so there is consistency for the Ss
audio note taking is the next frontier for capturing notes
A2: we encourage teachers to post notes on google classroom so students can review
Interactive notebooks a MUST!!! Great tool. https://t.co/cITs3mmUKW
A2: interactive notebooks, and reading notebook using modified version of Cornell notes. Would love to try sketch noting.
Yes. So helpful to sketch and write!
actually something I came across recently and looking to implement...looks interesting for sure
A2 our students are also responsible for tutorials about the projects they create. Notes are taken for that
Love interactive notebooks! Keyword = interactive!!! :) Also I have a . https://t.co/EEdhQvrXnx
A2: I use modified Cornell notes, which I model w a doc camera. I build each lesson & activity into an interactive notebook.
how does this promote engagement? (As opposed to child completing a task?)
I teach 1st grade and graphic organizers work very well with my Ss. Easy to read.
Completely agree. Why have a Ss write notes in a way that won't help them comprehend?
A2: when I'm planning well, I develop fill in the blank notes so students who hate writing don't struggle and can follow along.
A1: Its all about how the teacher integrates "it" into their instructional practice. All learners are different in some way.
Yes. I like the idea of teaching ever S the same strategy to start with (Cornell etc) but variations too https://t.co/MIFCqNEd2W
A2: Schools should not assume Ss know how to take notes. However the best strategy is the one that works for the individual S.
Through , Ss can record teacher's voice over notes and watch their thinking & processing afterwards. Very telling.
A2 - through Google Docs, collaboratively, then individually.
A2: I have posted documents on Google Classroom for them to "fill in the blanks". If they missed something.
As aside, looking for someone with sketchnote expertise to help in planning some PD for next year. Reach out to me if interested.
A2: Collaborative GAFE notetaking is effective & then each student can take it from their to customize.
Google docs & google voice.
Take pictures of notes
A2: Ss also need to reflect at end of note taking 2 consider what they learning & need 2 learn or ?s.
A2: This combination has made all the difference for S journaling & reflection in my classes: https://t.co/2ndT9s0ZiV
Love the great discussion and suggestions this morning!
Linda Elegante, Director of Student Services, Chardon, Ohio
Yeah, it's middle school, so it's important to give them a foundation. Also helps the Ts.
Does anyone have an AP student using speech-text to submit the writing assignments? Interested in hearing.
My Ss LOVED the double entry journal strategy I just taught them!
A2 rather than document someone else's thinking, noted should B about journaling Ss own thoughts about content so we can talk later
like that idea! Great way for Ss to share feedback w/ each other; helps them discuss any misconceptions
A3 JUST started this activity: Modeling writing practices, what a paragraph "looks like" - unit of meaning, not unit of length!
Why not take pictures of notes or use QR codes so they can upload them? Or place notes in Google class?
We are 1:1 Chromebook; we use GDocs, slides, sheets, etc for collaborative notes; whatever meets the content needs
Holy cow; learning so many cool methods for note-taking....
Let me know if you want to guest moderate in future. Love to discuss NGSS. DM for details.
This is such a great solution for many students! https://t.co/WMBwGpn2Uj
A2: I have posted documents on Google Classroom for them to "fill in the blanks". If they missed something.
A1: Yes 100x Jenn &let's not forget 2include/add subtitles on clips/videos 4hearing impaired Ss in classrooms.
A2: As with all learning, note-taking depends on purpose. In many instances, it's a waste of time. https://t.co/NEN1BmwrbK
I know it's late but Gung Hay Falco Chow! Happy New Year! I am looking forward to a great yr.
A2) I think the key is exposing students to a variety of note taking methods and let them select what works best for them.
Student voice and choice. So important! https://t.co/MRJAzSz3dh
A2 Teach students several viable options & let them determine what works for lrng style/needs/situation
I love that idea. My class works in partners for most things.
Ss use cornell note taking in my classroom
is an app I suggest to Ts. A copy of instructor's notes in Google drive allows voice annotation. https://t.co/tjpvShxVet
A2: interactive notebooks, and reading notebook using modified version of Cornell notes. Would love to try sketch noting.
A2 This English Prof agrees. Instead of notes: highlight & write down interesting ideas from text & self. https://t.co/cozWObp9FP
A2 ugh. Notes. Why write down anything that you can look up? Teach kids to think, not regurgitate.
A2- For literature notes- each student is responsible for one character-shared Google doc
A2: I like collaborative note taking - have students learn with and through others -
My / Ss cell phone cameras are often seen when notes get esp complex. Ss then transcribe @ their own pace https://t.co/k4IlrHYghQ
A2: Have them take pic. Give notes with blanks they fill in to keep them engaged but not slow them down.
use of 1:1 devices Google doc template of Cornell 2 support AVID also blogging, etc using multiple tools https://t.co/KC89JX3Dor
A2: w 1:1 a lot of pics taken. Then some w voice overs. But mostly provided by Ts if really necessary info
Which interactive notebook do you recommend? and for high school?
A2) Used Next Thing, digital post it, I thoughts and Corkulous for brainstorming thoughts & ideas
a2 - Google Keep - love tools, evernote, sketchnotes, - whatever tool works best for that kid- try to give as many options
Q3 What tools do you use with students to support reading and/or writing cross-curricularly?
Q3 What tools do you use with students to support reading and/or writing cross-curricularly?
would love to see some examples.
A2 my q, what is the point of note taking?
Ss handwrite notes. Engagement with pencil/pen/markers separates it from their other tch activities. Build connections.
Keep asking that Steve. Its is a must. And we must continue to reflect on our success in making it happen.
A2: That is a popular with my T's as well. Shared ownership. https://t.co/SaP7gWM9Fr
I know loves pens for supporting Ss with note taking
Good morning! Joining the a wee late and trying to catch up w/ convo
which extension is it, do you know the name?
A1.AT and ICT greatly enhance teaching if used correctly. It must be accompanied with Quality teaching from the heart not the bk
interested in how u create an interactive notebook - What tools do u use to create/distribute to Ss?

Q2 What are ways you encourage students to take notes?
A3) The shares primary source docs in all areas that allow you to find content to read/write across curr.
I would hope so! Why wouldn’t they be about to use STT? https://t.co/zpsrABvixE
Does anyone have an AP student using speech-text to submit the writing assignments? Interested in hearing.
I usually set the organizer and have them copy into NBs and then take notes live as we go.
We learn best when we can work with others, and work alone. Options are key!
Spot on! Model clear expectations and then let Ss find what works for them. One size fits all is NOT the answer.
A2: groups take notes together on large white board, take pic of board when done
Immediate connection-making and helps to unearth misconceptions and questions https://t.co/yjtzBuzb7l
My Ss LOVED the double entry journal strategy I just taught them!
A2: The real question is why are kids still taking traditional notes? Have we not evolved our classrooms?
When attending workshops, we are provided with the presentation, why to we not provide our Ss w/ the presentations?
a2: When I'm at a conf., I use Twitter to take notes--little chunks of ideas. Wonder if kids would like it?
*saving to show my boss* *also my wife* *sometimes both*
A2 we image every stdnt device w accessibility tools - 5th grit demoing 2 4th graders abt image https://t.co/oPmi5vDA5y
A1: Think I'm hearing a call to action for Student voice/choice! Yes, Steven!
I don't think that teaching kids to think is opposed to taking notes if that helps you understand a concept.
A3: here is the tool I use with my teachers! It's simple and helps organize their planning. https://t.co/TBzpRimdwd
Give a 1st grader a sticky note and the classroom lights up! Best motivator for reading notes.
Graphic notes allow students to "doodle" info
A3 "Paragraphs are units of meaning, not units of length" "Fluff is for pillows, not for papers"
great idea for students who struggle with handwriting, have OT needs! https://t.co/iZMUtP628s
A2: Have them take pic. Give notes with blanks they fill in to keep them engaged but not slow them down.
A3: Using specific student learning paths with Study Island, Reading Eggs/Eggspress
A3: Reading Apprenticeship for reading (philosophy, not a tool); EmPOWER for writing.
That's the idea. Meeting learners where they are can be either assistive or differentiated.
Gong Xi Fa Cai! Likewise :)
Notetaking and review - that process of writing - is important to learning neurologically. It's part of processing.
A2 tech hurts retention. Keep notes to paper.save tech for making https://t.co/4RdsSpM8qE https://t.co/q8trCxr0UD
A2: Differentiate note taking: Typing on Google Docs, Graphic Organizers on Google Draw, Google Voice feature on Google Docs
What she said! :) https://t.co/6BeeMa4pzK
Why not take pictures of notes or use QR codes so they can upload them? Or place notes in Google class?
A3 iCardSort, an app that creates movable electronic cards, allows students to sift through and sort information.
Might write about value of sketch noting; still hearing about "no doodling" rules in classrooms DM if interested in being quoted!
A2 Notes very important for objective tests & regurgitatiove essays in college. Not defending this, but students need this ability.
RT : A1. For instance, you would certainly use assistive tech to help you differentiate and meet learners where they are!
Using ABC writing in my school district
maybe the "notes" are notes from their research and learning
A3 We use video explanations =another vehicle in add to writing to improve evidence-based communication https://t.co/xmikC90Bsf
In our co-teaching model, one of us writes notes on the board while the other circulates and helps with various levels of notes.
What if the student is or ?
I love interactive notebooks and use them with my Ss.
A3-we do not have a particular method, I just want S to write frequently with specific feedback provided in return
A2. Live scribe pens, sketch noting and text to speech tools to represent content in different modalities.
A3: We use reading / writing centers where students can listen & interact with the reading / writing. Also use a few programs.
Had an art tr that drew his notes in a PDs and meetings. It worked for him. Not 1 size fits all.
A2: Ts push out a template or Graphic Organizer for Ss to annotate by drawing, text & pics in Notability at MS level.
A3 Reading A - Z is a good way to get readers at students levels.
A1 differentiation makes it possible for all Ss to interact in classroom at their own level, Assistive tech meets specific needs
Same. And, use them on tests. Seeking out notes helps reinforce the material each time they flip a page. https://t.co/1LTHBT1WOu
A2. Ss can take notes anyway that works for them: traditional, digital, sketch notes. It's not a one size fits all.
A2. Split logs always my fav note-taking tool: summary on 1 side; reaction, ?s, ideas, connections on other https://t.co/WTOub6XsQD
Q2 What are ways you encourage students to take notes?
I agree. Then the question is who teaches the strategy to Ss.
interesting - thanks for share!

A3: Google voice recognition and are great tools to keep Ss engaged in the classroom, no matter what the Ss levels are
A3: organizers, writing strategies (ex. double entry journal), reading strategies (ex. info text vs. literary)
A2: If we're going to truly differentiate note taking, Ss need exposure to an array of methods to choose. https://t.co/9hATUUU96G
A3: read outloud, write outloud, livescribe pens, lots of apps in Google for chrome books for this too!
A3: Hand the learning over. Ask the Ss.
"it worked for him" is key with so many things. Note taking should be top of that list. Shouldn't be formal.
Some of my Ss will tell me "it's a work alone time for me" Gotta love that, especially in 1st grade. https://t.co/ZYuKIOfuvS
We learn best when we can work with others, and work alone. Options are key!
It's so cool how as assess to technology increases, throwbacks to handwritten notes & artifacts also rises.
are two great apps for this https://t.co/XOcaOrz2L1
A2: w 1:1 a lot of pics taken. Then some w voice overs. But mostly provided by Ts if really necessary info
Bobby from Lexington, MO, signing in late.
I'll have to find the article about benefits of doodling while note taking.
Would have helped me as a student.
Determining salience is hard! Ss sharing reflections on their decisions after notetaking: added value. https://t.co/Rh15ZY55Jy
A2: is a great tool. Ss noting taking should be based on individual learner. Notes are for comprehension; lets Ss decide
Raz Kids and Epic are also great resources for differentiated books and topics. https://t.co/dxMe0ggxS0
A3 Reading A - Z is a good way to get readers at students levels.
So many Ts still think that learning is copying notes & studying for a test
A2: Remember you can also use slides or draw to take notes. Draw is great for thinking maps!
A3: for writing. Modeling of doc analysis & annotation w doc camera on my example interactive notebook for each class.
A3: My SocSt and Science Ts share there primary/journal sources for their lessons. We close read them in ELA to prep for essay test
I have Ss who love to draw. It works for them!
Love Voice to text tools Dragon etc
Q2 interactive word walls, digital interactive journals with teacher
A3 Work w/ other Ts to make sure timing lines up so ideas can be reinforced. Ex: holocaust in history, matching lit in ELA
A2: variety of tools strategically pair 2 Ss to take notes together via back channeling.
I teach elementary ELA &science. I used Interactive nb for science, my team teacher used it for math.
Absolutely! Students need opportunities to make their own decisions about learning as often as possible.
Good morning . Dave Britten from West Michigan. Sorry for being late. Long week.
A2: I use Cornell notes & other graphic organizers - sometimes S or t created
A3: Learning Ally for narrated audio recordings of books & Ts make their own audio recordings in EE for non-IEP Ss.
good question. Better yet I pull my notes often to help answer questions, do we let kids do that enough?
A3 for writing, using a common rubric (esp in middle school) to teach kids the fundamentals of academic writing
As librarian, I set-up digital research kits for all subjects. Ts upload them to moodle for accessibility.
I also use Augemented reality to make the bulletin boards come to life with S videos explaining words/concepts.
" nothing worse than a great deal of effort to writing the best sentence you possibly can, only to have to go back and erase it."
A3: Hemingway App, StoryToolz, Analyze My Writing are all good websites for rough draft feedback

A3 https://t.co/VJJpXpsp75 to record stories that Ss miss during pull outs & allows them an audio version to keep up w/lit circles
Refl time nds 2 be blt into inst time.Anyone use 10 min 'rule'/their lectures? (talk 4 10, refl pair/share for 2?)
depends on purpose of task, if to compose thoughts for output, why should the output require handwriting?
A2 by teaching them tricks to succeed, Ex: Ctrl + F, using text to read, taking audio notes, collaborative notes w/partners
Sara from Indiana joining late. Good morning.
Q2: I show them to digitize their notebook on ) using Scannable for paper docs then review w comments/highlights
One great tool is
Worth your look. You will love it.
A3 then after they have fundamentals, can teach variations within content, rubric is loose enough to allow those
thanks for this. Will spend some time diving into it later
Not when they are first learning new material. Writing is essential, note-taking, not so much.
Me too. Crucial for me. Back channels can work if process is practiced.
A3 1 way we bring reading into is through primary source docs and interpreting not only the message but the time period
The key is that we recognize that we are all different, and learn differently too!
Not their fault really. That's what the system is set up to be.
A3: iBooks Author allows Ts to create interactive ebooks with links, audio, video, & embedded elements
A2 notes are less about memorializing a lecture and more about capturing one's own thinking in that moment
YES! This is the present situation in my 8th grade class for the past few weeks. Genius Hr projects!
What's the goal of students taking notes?
A3: great for ELA and content areas. too
HS kids? They would love it. Let's stop fighting phones& start using them!
Bravo! When we incorporate other senses w/ note-taking, it becomes note-making! & info is personalized https://t.co/aaLsaBeLMd
A2. Notes don't have to be purely written. I'm a big fan of . Why not incorporate the visual with the written?
Right. And we need to respect a desire from learners to want to learn differently.
Some administrators and politicians do too. We still have a lot of minds to change.
I do that via Google Classroom. I may talk for a but put the bullets there for access, along w links/videos.
Absolutely! I try and scaffold for them, give strategies/options to get them there.
& amonth later allu good people please hopover2 4/9/16
We have 4 Educator Certification trainings coming up;
https://t.co/bfcmEM9fMa
We can come to you too!
BECOME MORE GOOGLEY
A3 Databases and online encyclopedias available through libraries have multiple levels of access and they read-aloud/translate.
Yes! There are plenty of ways to write out reflections, take notes on the process & add their thoughts. https://t.co/6D6JjgLZE2
maybe the "notes" are notes from their research and learning
Love it. And as we know, making is always more valuable than taking!
Built in accessibility on today’s tech allows for easy use of text-to-speech! Let Ss if it builds interest and engagement
for students try doodle/artistic notes! Some students can conjure up a concept w/a detailed pic.
A1: Just like with Tt, Ss need to get what they need by personalizing learning
A3: A relentless focus at my school to ensure Ss read, write, think & talk in every classroom, every day.
Thanks for the share Mike - nice list
A3 content can be used for engagement and ela skills can be taught through it - slides, iMovie, explain everything, etc.
A3: w/ plugins like Read & Write & provide Ss w/ the ability 2 have text read 2 them and listen 2 verbal feedback
The confused look after being told to do what suits best suggests that decisions are often not made by ss.
A3: We're excited to launch our K-12 marketplace soon, to make it easier for all T's to find these tools! https://t.co/S0BSOQBcp7
A3: Writing groups (not peer editing) for feedback on thinking, clarity, content Protocol here: https://t.co/KJQ6BoMJLz
A3: I use to add an interactive/competitive spin on supporting reading/writing.The Ss love it & exported data supports Ts.
have to give credit fro meaning not length quote - I take ownership of fluff comment :) :) :)
A2 let notes tell the story... act it out.. draw a picture... write a song ...make a commerical sell it to all learners
To me, this is where AT&T comes in. Provides a tool for S with these issues to function.
Ss have a binder kept in class. I use templates https://t.co/i3WjNiEljA & maintain a master for reference. Use doc camera
doesn't have to be that way.
Some of my Ss learn better by writing notes themselves and they do! Others need to hear it and check theirs. Whatever they need.
A3: Kids produce the texts in wrtg that they are rdg: If in rdg kids are reading literary NF, then kids study how to write it.
I use for taking conference notes but haven't flipped it for Ss to use. Great idea. https://t.co/agfnzwzHgl
Q2: I show them to digitize their notebook on ) using Scannable for paper docs then review w comments/highlights
A3: A united faculty is a powerful tool to support cross-curricular reading/writing. Spend time uniting strategies and rubrics.
A2:Exactly. I always started the year w a class discussion on styles of note taking https://t.co/PxMlVrNu3C
A2: Schools should not assume Ss know how to take notes. However the best strategy is the one that works for the individual S.
Great ideas for our tool boxes! https://t.co/HhVKYSNCbz
is an app I suggest to Ts. A copy of instructor's notes in Google drive allows voice annotation. https://t.co/tjpvShxVet
A2: interactive notebooks, and reading notebook using modified version of Cornell notes. Would love to try sketch noting.
Great ideas for our tool boxes! https://t.co/fxc93dbkQZ

A2: interactive notebooks, and reading notebook using modified version of Cornell notes. Would love to try sketch noting.
Voxer--a tool for student/parent use in reading? Sped classroom, student reads into Voxer and send voice message to parent
"Why take notes, why bother" a +conversation w/LD kids!Perhaps ask them to "eavesdrop" on when adults do it https://t.co/0CKQukSEkw
A2 ugh. Notes. Why write down anything that you can look up? Teach kids to think, not regurgitate.
Our building purchased raz kids this year. Ss love to record their reading. We use Epic as well. Great resources.
A3. Such a great opportunity to focus on the power of themes. We learn thematically, not discipline-based.
A3. Some great tools for reading are -Read and Write extension- Also a tool like Read180.
A3 Reading like traditional oral storytelling is at its best when conversive: conversative & deeply transformative.
I do it on the down low--it's mobile, the free version's good also solves "you lost my work" issues
We use Cornell Notes in Study Skills class, and go as low as 4th grade w/ them https://t.co/JNBqMeG37K
A2: I use Cornell notes & other graphic organizers - sometimes S or t created
I think Ts still control the "system" in their classroom
I would agree this is the same for my MS as well.
A3: variety of tools Ss love . It's engaging for all learners. are good too.
and yet in many cases I suspect this is not the case. But good point.
So true! No need to always add more apps. Tools are built right into every device. Use what you have! https://t.co/u42oYq9imc
Built in accessibility on today’s tech allows for easy use of text-to-speech! Let Ss if it builds interest and engagement
A3 Love collaborating on interdisciplinary edu to promote reading: local poet/teacher Walt Whitman https://t.co/PeABqd959p
A3 I greatly value anything that OT recommends to me such as EdHelper.
RazKids is also a favorite of our ELL students. :)
A3. We use and in combination w to get Ss reading/writing about world events
as a HS T I very much appreciate the foundation provided by Elem and MS T's!
chatted about this on Tuesday: digital vs paper notebooks. Great chat! Go check it out! https://t.co/bvU991FRoc
Interactive notebooks a MUST!!! Great tool. https://t.co/cITs3mmUKW
A2: interactive notebooks, and reading notebook using modified version of Cornell notes. Would love to try sketch noting.
if they were discussing what they chose to, they might not need notes at all, it would take them voluntarily.
Voxer is a great walkie talke-like tool. Kids love it! Tt do too. https://t.co/SpbgjekaE2
Voxer--a tool for student/parent use in reading? Sped classroom, student reads into Voxer and send voice message to parent
A3 Common strat across subjects are powerful-an approach to "dismantle" a word prob in math can also be used in ELA for paragraph
A2 Record notes. Take notes while type or write. Recording = less stress on Ss.
That's a different point entirely. Believe me, with 2 kids going through MS on their way to HS I wish it wasn't that way
A3) used Co-writer so helpful for Ss who struggle w/ putting thoughts into writing & struggling spellers
I get it. I use the free version too. Still a good idea. :)
No doubt! Strict note taking rules might be useless to that st as well.
No doubt! That goes back to the Industrial Age of education: all adults have the information = not true
I love differentiating reading with and Ss can differentiate their levels themselves!
Donated cell phones, record classroom tests, sped student has the test read to them at their own pace "on their own"
Absolutely. Notetaking is an important skill to organize thoughts. We just tend to teach it wrong.
A3: I will just read along for this one. Would love ideas that would work in English, History, etc. and World Languages.
my Ss rarely take "notes" because we're always "doing". Notes seems to equal lecture in my mind & I'm not a big lecturer
A3: Ss used Docs voice to text to record stories. Then used translate for my ELL students so they could share with Ps.
Strong echo! Great resource to differentiate. https://t.co/6X35B4JcnQ
One great tool is
Worth your look. You will love it.
A3:Also makes me think of 's work of Active Literacies: hear it, read it, speak it, write it across the curriculum
A3: I use to connect curriculum. Also gives authentic audience so Ss practice more.
Check out tools by and that can provide supports
Totally agree. We do it for Ss but don't for teachers when we do PD. Hmmm...wonder!
Indeed! You build THAT in your school culture & the Ss will find the tools/apps to enhance their reading & writing.
Me too! Why force Ss to use a strategy that doesn't help access the learning? https://t.co/6LqYt0rK66
I'll have to find the article about benefits of doodling while note taking.
Would have helped me as a student.
A3: Our district also uses for great graphic organizers and reading/writing skill building
A3: speed-dating for help on claim development, solving big prob of my essay; all S's see all S's have challenges, work together
A3: we often refer back to the tools from workshop - anchor charts, tool kits, etc. what they learn in wkshp is for other areas too
Q4: How can technology support students in math who have dyslexia, dysgraphia or dyscalculia?
Q4: How can technology support students in math who have dyslexia, dysgraphia or dyscalculia?
so they can refer to them to refresh their memory days or weeks later
A4 talking calculator auditory feedback to help check the accuracy of the keys pressed & verify the answer before it gets to paper.
A3 Wouldn't have graduated college without Commodore 64 to write papers w/ spell check. Typewriter no way. Simple tools help.
I need to check that out. https://t.co/nOnVw3314a
Voxer--a tool for student/parent use in reading? Sped classroom, student reads into Voxer and send voice message to parent
It is another great tool for Students with Learning Disabilities.
A3 the Internet?? Oh you we looking for something more specific. My bad. We read tutorials to get ideas
I understand, but, most of borrow work from others. Ts would be upset to leave a wksp with just their own notes.
Yes! Always ask the question, what is the skill here, & how is what I'm requiring Ss to do reinforcing it? https://t.co/rx3vT253L9
A2-I know there are many methods but believe we often focus too much on "taking" and not "understanding" notes and purpose for Edu
also 's articles are great for differentiating content.
I love using it because Ss get to decide what the imp details are - great way to do so
Great suggestions! https://t.co/zkGXU1iIKD
A3. Some great tools for reading are -Read and Write extension- Also a tool like Read180.
A2 Need to teach students the "why" re: complete notes. Mainly useless other than as honed reference for objective/coverage exams.
A3 Some eBooks in libraries with Destiny allow read-aloud.
Shifted from the dumping of new material & kids writing everything down to conversations around what is important.
Often this is true! Thanks for reminding us.
Also for differentiated reading in top texts, incl. Hi-Lo. Plus in-text annotation / portfolios
i love telling stories to highlight a point or key concept - kids love stories & tend to remember the concept
A3: Also use so we can share with classes we skype to create books weather, animals, celebrations.
Low tech: manipulatives
High tech: on screen calculator, virtual manipulative, web simulations
CalcuScribe
IntelliKeys
Flashmaster
A4: I find that is so powerful in helping Ss learn at their own pace in Mathematics, also manipulatives
vast majority of my students tried to write everything verbatim. Took a long time to shake them off that
writing improves retention, learning to distill information, create resource for later review (in that order)
Instead of writing, draw a pic instead. We just did profile traits on characters and they drew and wrote.
Amazon Echo will read aloud many Kindle books, even if they are not Audible books.
Yes! Import 2 acknowledge that most S note-taking=driven by info T has chosen 4 the notes. S choice/voice? https://t.co/QgF8roilUl
What's the goal of students taking notes?
A3 and are all wonderful resources for & allow for differentiation
Can barely keep up with all of the amazing ideas in todayś .
a3: 1st..lots of discussion before writing. If you'talk' it..you can 'write it'. Ss can record chat & then write even self talk.
A3) I was, & am, a painfully slow write. I would have liked any app that allowed me to voice record or type. Much faster!
Will catch the second-half of today’s chat from Hong Kong. So what did I miss?
I use a tool by to informally assess if supports comprehension Can be a huge eye opener of info
A3: now added a 3rd party iOS keyboard to Co:Writer Universal app. https://t.co/0sgATU4Gh3
A3) used Co-writer so helpful for Ss who struggle w/ putting thoughts into writing & struggling spellers
A2 We need to help students understand that even where specific tool is onerous, may still need to master it for college today.
And it is easy to change: Involve edus in PD design, use data well, provide follow-up. Just a few!
Thanks. Celebrate some Chinese traditions. Loved going to Beijing. Ancestral roots!
Yesterday, I worked w/Level 4 school. All kids out of mainstream. Goal - engage learners. Inspiring staff.
dig deeper into SLA website, looks like much is already set before Ss get there. Choice can't be cosmetic.
A4 (cont) Additionally, is a powerful tool in any subject, esp math. I love building problems in w/ Ss
I encourage Ss to use what works best for them and offer suggestions such as take a pic on how to check-out ebooks.
As the official representative of every MS T on the planet, we say you're welcome. :)
A3: also helps love the new classblog because it can be shared. Ps can comment too and improves work.
How do we consider learning not as content but context of learning, tools, space and learner? https://t.co/KQkUiPl24x
that is a great tool for kids. Make groups for a book and have them share over the course of reading. Pose questions.
Yes to writing improving retention! https://t.co/uji5FWsggI
writing improves retention, learning to distill information, create resource for later review (in that order)
Genius Hr projects I gave no parameters. They had a GREAT time with the project part creating visuals.
I try to get my doodlers to doodle topic related pics in their notes. .
A2 one of these years, the cycle of traditional notes will end. Kids should be able to document key thoughts how they choose
is now trending in USA, ranking 2
some of us T's got trained in iBooks - struggling with finding the time to actually create
Will have to do this! Going to .
Would love to let them leave school and start an online degree in grade 11, but wife won't let me:(
...it's when it crosses over into caricatures of the T that it gets interesting.
Thank you for that resource on the dyslexia tools. Great to share w/ parents, too.
Lots of resources for Ss reading current events-give them choice and Ss note point of view/bias: https://t.co/MbNW3r5DQh
Q2: Give Ss bright paper and have them synthesize notes from comp or NB onto one sheet to use for assess
. Notes will be obsolete once using to fullest potential by creating a collaborative interactive environment
I need to re think my planning for next week ! Arghhh too many fabulous tools being mentioned !
that would be the description of my morning. Preparing for trip to market. -28 C, feels like -42 C.
They'll remember that story and then connect back to the content, which is great!
Getting ss to do something else than the specific end (drawing for reading) is a powerfull motivator https://t.co/lxc5gP47HY
A3 Love collaborating on interdisciplinary edu to promote reading: local poet/teacher Walt Whitman https://t.co/PeABqd959p
Plenty of opps for students to consolidate their learning, but w/o hand cramps from PowerPoint notes.
A4: haven't taught math in years so I'm lurking on this one.
. I do this, and email them to students who are absent that day. https://t.co/nCdpwcYNBW
Google docs & google voice.
Take pictures of notes
A2 Fully expect that univs will learn from primary Ts & employers the importance of engaged learning.
YES! Love them as learning tools.
Including and using their will support ELLs. https://t.co/ih0O3BDQ2D
A3 Some eBooks in libraries with Destiny allow read-aloud.
A2) Give kids choices. I use ColorNote for my grocery list, EverNote for team notes, Notes on my iPad for running thoughts.
A4 Voice recognition programs (Dragon Naturally Speaking), recording devices
right? Hey sista! is in the house too on
Glad 2cthis Teresa! Currently battling w/being asked to write notes FOR students 'guided notes'
A3: Adding a voiceover to slide shows that contain text, can really help students with reading
hard to do with my kids & sports, but they will be doing dual-enrollment courses as jrs & seniors
Taking notes on ideas of collaborative partners...to organize thinking/learning, reorganize sequences. https://t.co/3t6v5Fduig
A2: The real question is why are kids still taking traditional notes? Have we not evolved our classrooms?
A3: I'm not reading teacher but I would use GHO and partner my Ss with a class to buddy read.
A4: No idea for Math…. but I will share what I learn with colleagues!
I will definitely need to check that out! Hi-Lo is so hard to find.
I also post these to my Google Classroom, so Ss always have access. https://t.co/UCJM81tcxW
. I do this, and email them to students who are absent that day. https://t.co/nCdpwcYNBW
Google docs & google voice.
Take pictures of notes
Just curious. Is the expectation that all Ss can only use Cornell notes in all subjects?
A4: technology supports all learners in all subject areas. There's an APP for that.
A2 teach the info in class - highlight what they need to write down. Quality notes not quantity
whatever app gets the students to love to write because they choose to write... gets my vote
Agree.. trying to work with Eng Ts and had the same challenge. Thinking it’ll end up being a summer R & D project.
is representing! Good morning peeps!
word predictability is so helpful and leads Ss to an understanding of proper structure
Cornell notes can be great for this reason - Ts may decide key terms, but Ss decide what they want to write
I go with "optional homework." "Here's what I'm doing tomorrow, if you could do XX it's be great." They usually do more.
Thanks so much for sharing 😃
Guys, your thoughts on Teachers writing out/producing 'guided notes' for Ss?
Keith from NJ HS Educator here for a bit GM All
Yes. Agreed and those are not examples of traditional note-taking. Those are meaningful.
A2 Instead of complete notes,
for learning, want students to read slowly,
to respond to thoughtful deeply engaging questions.
my Ss always taking notes! highlighting, drawing, interactive notebooks, love stick notes! Moveable notes! https://t.co/ujLPnxIIVT
my Ss rarely take "notes" because we're always "doing". Notes seems to equal lecture in my mind & I'm not a big lecturer
I also like this--teaching Ss "note-taking" is a lifelong skill. Learning how and when goes beyond school. https://t.co/RsTKYKEe82
A2) Give kids choices. I use ColorNote for my grocery list, EverNote for team notes, Notes on my iPad for running thoughts.
At a young age, Ss need to have the chance to have more visuals. TouchMath is great!
I think it's an extra processing opp. Especially w/ handwritten, Ss process info ≥3 times instead of 1
. A3 It's important that Ts model multiple ways of note taking, not just traditional.
A2: In terms of taking notes, it is so important for students to be able to form their own definitions of word
Accèss is key! for Ss to refer back to and for Ts, Ps and support staff!
Accèss is key! for Ss to refer back to and for Ts, Ps and support staff!
Doesn't that make tomorrow tricky?
A3: and there is a way to google search that will tailor search results by three levels.
A3 encourage using voiceover on devices when struggling with words. Audio text books-not replace/go along with.
1/I agree. I killed "notes" years ago. We've got collections, clips, and critical questions/thoughts.
A4 1st of all, making math less about taking "the test" is far more critical than any tech. Discussions w/real connections!
and yes that is from the unicorn farm
I had a S who took notes with doodles. Very effective for her & the other Ss who saw them. Multiple paths matter
Right? At a conference/meeting when there's a key slide/image, watch the phones come out. :)
A4 Converting calculations to speech through a talking calculator or app can sometimes help.
Yes I always try to purchase audio, eBook and print of titles used in classroom https://t.co/hsEjF4AcKq
Including and using their will support ELLs. https://t.co/ih0O3BDQ2D
A3 Some eBooks in libraries with Destiny allow read-aloud.
Absolutely. Targeting all learning styles.
Choices are key to real buy in https://t.co/Vb8r2069Ke
A2) Give kids choices. I use ColorNote for my grocery list, EverNote for team notes, Notes on my iPad for running thoughts.
when they come to me from 6th grade, I ask, how did you do X in 6th grade? Helps me see and address any differences in technique.
2/I used to think I was a disaster bc my notes are sketches, quotes, outside connections.Nope-that's success thinking
A4: As someone who struggled with mild dyslexia in math, I have found this to be an excellent resource: https://t.co/stCt15xA64
I agree. If Ss have difficulty then just let them speak or record session in class.
4) Does any know of wonderful PD or conferences covering dyslexia, dysgraphia, & especially dyscalculia?
EXACTLY! We don't write everything down anymore as adults.
Lol YES, &those Gately's rmyinspo!
. has 4 doc camera give aways on Apr 16! How cool!!
a3: gr8 note taking tool 4 all r Ss highlight or use sticky notes. Rule = try for 1 sentence or 5 words 4 whole page!
been wanting to start using quizizz - how do Ss like it?
I had kids that hated Cornell. They wanted to sketch & record. Notes are personal and should be https://t.co/iqnPsBE1We
Cornell notes can be great for this reason - Ts may decide key terms, but Ss decide what they want to write
Not at all. Students come to the table prepared, having thought deeper. I get memes, news clips, thoughts
A4: simple tools like allow Ss to pause, rewind, and re-watch their teacher as many times as needed
A4: I am an ELA mind 100%! Not much help in math.... LOL
A4: It is possible to write feedback to students and also record the comments too. Helps students understand
I hope not. Implement different graphic organizers and model MANY ways of note taking
Have to run; thanks for the GREAT ideas! Will be writing about some of them!!
Q5: What are ways you allow students to differentiate they way they show their understand and knowledge?
Visual depictions of learning build neurologic redundancies...great for retention! https://t.co/ztkp6OvU7y
A2: If we're going to truly differentiate note taking, Ss need exposure to an array of methods to choose. https://t.co/9hATUUU96G
A2 back channel for note taking!
Q5: What are ways you allow students to differentiate they way they show their understand and knowledge?
The sharing of resources + information this morning on shows the power of using social media as a tool for collaborative learning.
I strongly believe we're not helping any Ss by giving them pages of homework in math every night, esp. those who struggle!
No kidding! They have all the big pub texts incl. and other hi-lo specialists.
We learn to listen first, then speak, read and write - so we should consider this with tech use
why aren't the notes pushed out to ss? Makes no sense to do work twice
Sometimes regular Ed tchrs don't recognize that there are other ways for student to take notes. Tool 4 right reasons.
Giving options, pitching to student interest, makes them want to work. They give themselves HW, hahaha!
In your experience as a learner of English (& perhaps languages,) what do you suggest for a world language course?
QUESTION 5
https://t.co/srBmvKDYh4
Q5: What are ways you allow students to differentiate they way they show their understand and knowledge?
Yeah, but what about the ones that didn't?
A5 we completely free flow. Student pick proj and tools. If they wan to get deeper into one proj we let them skip next
Nothing specific but ones like have sessions that cover it along with
a5 - help the kids build a library of ways to share & show their learning - tech tools, video, presentation tools, etc
A4 One of the best reasons for Edus to be on social media is to share great strategies and tools such as these
A2 Many Ts/profs provide notes for students so they can focus on reading slowly for engaged thinking. Here notes/Qs/responses great.
A5: Choice menus to demonstrate mastery using different learning styles.
A4: Math is part of STEM - Bring it alive with technology - Open your classrom to the world.
A4: I need to read all these responses! I'm brave enough to say I don't know...YET.
I have abt 100 tabs open... thnx for all the great resources
I don't know about this but I will definitely look into it. This could be very cool https://t.co/8hi7BXXhqH
A4: simple tools like allow Ss to pause, rewind, and re-watch their teacher as many times as needed
Hey why we need back! https://t.co/z6ZRD7BrMO
4) Does any know of wonderful PD or conferences covering dyslexia, dysgraphia, & especially dyscalculia?
A5: Stuchoice is so important to engagement and success. Some Ss show me through building, suite, dig reading
Alison Walton from Washington state joining in!
A5 as much choice as possible in terms of "assignments" andassessment, esp with long-term projects/passion projects
A5) Menus, done well, are a great way to diff. the product piece, esp. for GT learners. Blogs are one of my fave ways.
A5: Make collaborative slide show!
A5 Explore strategies in project based learning allow the unique needs of students to be met. Create CHOICES.Let them have a voice
I appreciate admins want T's to use own tools, but in HS when Ss have up 2 8 different T's, can be overwhelming
Totally agree. So many Tech tools to use why make them suffer!
I'm super interested in finding ways to better serve French learners with dyslexia.
https://t.co/pLoIqOnZ3o
I also like this--teaching Ss "note-taking" is a lifelong skill. Learning how and when goes beyond school. https://t.co/RsTKYKEe82
A2) Give kids choices. I use ColorNote for my grocery list, EverNote for team notes, Notes on my iPad for running thoughts.
Thanks for the resource. Invaluable tip!
A4: Many implementation ideas related to UDL-Mulitple Means of Rep, Action&Exp, Engagement. https://t.co/TZLOa48lVC
A5: I always thought it helped to have a menu of suggested technologies as a starting point.
A2. I use as tool for self reflection and "thought" taking. Save all to personal vox folder. Go back later. No autocorrect!
A2: Note taking is idiosyncratic to the user. Learn a variety of strategies including nonlinguistic, and pick what works for them.
Have for Ss for years now. Having Chromebooks Read/Write is a great tool.
Yes! In blended learning teachers and students can provide feedback via video comments. https://t.co/5jlz3vGYsB
A4: It is possible to write feedback to students and also record the comments too. Helps students understand
Delivered a PD yest where 4 Ts spent a lot of neg energy on re-tstg 4mastery. Frustrating. is so hard to chg
A5: if we simply let them understand and know what they choose to, the question would be unnecessary!
A5 For social studies Ts, starting with the model, which has 5 different options for projects
No, we focus on 1 subject/year and try to build on it. Also I teach elem, so our CornellNotes are modified https://t.co/slCN9pn76S
Just curious. Is the expectation that all Ss can only use Cornell notes in all subjects?
A5 I often allow drawings or comic strips as answers if Ss are more comfortable. Still shows me they got the main ideas.
Great Have to get back to developing https://t.co/yiz5O8G6T1 new page: Recommended Resources for Ss, Ps, & Ts Send ur suggestions!
A5 Ss can show knowledge acquisition-digital (podcasts, videos) or writing, posters. Build on Ss strengths instead of weaknesses
A5: I've just mastered https://t.co/4ZMpOVNj3c . It's a super presentation mode that allows embedded videos tweets pic etc! 😊
A5: I've just mastered https://t.co/bWdyc9vWqP . It's a super presentation mode that allows embedded videos tweets pic etc! 😊
A5: class discussions, small group discussions, partner discussions
I appreciated how designed for this... S's could tag notes as private or shared-w/-class. Thoughtful.
A4: makes a great study guide tool to capture problems w/camera & screen record their problem-solving process
A4: makes a great study guide tool to capture problems w/camera & screen record their problem-solving process
Note-taking is so personal
Make an impact on lrn w
Exit assessment
self assessment
Purposeful grouping
Learning conversations
More teaching | Less grading
Really critical to have a whole school approach to using tech. Tricky! https://t.co/Hkx50l7qyG
I appreciate admins want T's to use own tools, but in HS when Ss have up 2 8 different T's, can be overwhelming
Its a very user friendly screen casting app. Provides a URL. Great for Ss explaining their learning too.
there is wisdom in that. Picture note taking helps Ss create meaning & boosts memory - I do both
A5 we work on fitting square pegs in round holes by making the round holes bigger
A5: Let the Ss show their own passion and learning through Genius Hour
A5: have Ss teach the class (So fun!)
These very ?s are why I wrote "Don't Sniff the Glue." We don't need to be dictators. We can be guides:) https://t.co/NJbfelMFx6
I used to incorporate "homework choice" Ss could pick one of three options and we would then discuss key themes.
STMath is great for students! Can be used K -12.
A5: Student voice and choice! Students need to own their learning. When we make room for that, achievement will follow!
A5 But Ss need to know that each option available to them is "equally hard," some kids aren't "getting away with" something easy
A5 in a guided math and guided reading model there is constant formative assessment, Ts really get to know their kids
Spot on. Practicing doing something wrong only makes you an expert at doing it wrong!
I love being able to set up Slides for Ss and share via Classroom to craft projects
A5. The school has to have autonomous learning environment that encourages thru activities like PBLs, centers, menus, etc.
You want to rethink notetaking? Have Ss "tweet" the most important concepts of their learning be it labs, projects, lecture...
also, tools like calculators make an important difference for my so (has dyscalculia)
With most PBL we allow S project choice.
Success in Choice in demos of mastery depends on having a task neutral rubric all understand going in.
A5: free choice from a menu created w S input. To dev multiple skills, sometimes limit/rotate options w S input from the menu
No problem. They join the discussion, listen, offer thoughts. Maybe next time they'll be facilitator.
Great online portfolio tool my Ss & I are trying out is
#4 videos 2 give students another shot at 'seeing' concept in action. Can be me, musical, another tchr - try 2 hit diff approaches.
Providing choice doesn't make this challenge worse, it actually makes it less likely.
could faculty choose a menu of acceptable tools that s can use in any subject?
A5. The school has to have autonomous learning environment that encourages Ss thru activities like PBLs, centers, menus, etc.
A5 we use project logs and ask them to answer our 3 learning questions. They can answer however they want
A5: Google chat (like a twitter chat) LOL (they had never done it before, hilarious)
A3 recently started using OneNote Learning Tools, focuses Ss attention, read back & dictation https://t.co/bJRfacJgZc
A4 Every minute, new resources are available! What a great age we're living in w tools for equity & justice. https://t.co/jYj5wtzovZ
A4: technology supports all learners in all subject areas. There's an APP for that.
A5: Remind S's what we are learning is important to everyone; Ask: how can you show the world what you know & why it matters?
Before I decide on a photographer, I like to see how well they photograph people of color.
The last thing you want is, "Use this technology in this way."
Tools like allow students to demo knowledge aside from basic text
Think of it as a fluid learning-teaching mastermind. In a student sense. I'm just the guide.
A5: I like using RAFT activities to show Ss understanding in content areas. So easy to differentiate too
In Jr. Hi I had to take all notes in outline form and the teacher graded them. Outlines don't work for me
A5: Teach them https://t.co/4ZMpOVNj3c . It's a super presentation mode that allows embedded videos tweets pic etc! 😊
A4 is a very useful tool for math & meeting individual Ss needs.
A5 You can't differentiate when you're still micro-assigning one-size fits all work. Rubrics w/multiple pathways work wonders
A5: Teach them https://t.co/3s3HzTZTmw . It's a super presentation mode that allows embedded videos tweets pic etc! 😊
Choice for choices sake is unwieldy and time consuming for Ts, choice for demo of mastery is essential for learning. Define mastery
A5. Let learners take on various roles. Different options for homework, sharing, reflecting. All important.
Agree! But most times inclusion is what drives differentiation in classroom.
A5: Clarity about goal 1st.If certain product is needed, then process differentiated. If process required then product can shift
A5: Ss like 2 create news show using GreenScreen app. Reason to read, reflect, write when creating a news segment.
A5: comments using Google docs, we can communicate at any time
A5: Personalize Ss learning: what Ss need. They will tell you!
A5: Most importantly, I check whether students can tell me what they understand by the feedback that has been given to them
What are your recommended resources for Ss, Ts, & Ps? Send suggestions!
Thanks for all the suggestions ! Will return to review tomorrow at work. Enjoy rest of your weekend everyone!
A5: Organizationally, they are often open to choose how they show learning as long as they include all requirements of the task.
Add to that - NOTES SHOULD NOT BE GRADED!

A5. Allow Ss to choice and voice in they way they demonstrate knowledge and mastery
agree- I see diminishing returns and counterproductivity if given too much
word. And sometimes don't use tech at all is an acceptable solution
It's a new paradigm: one where I give up my control and serve as a mentor while they dig and exchange.
But, sometimes it is okay for you to be the lead. Differentiated leadership requires it.
A5 PBA allowing students to create project on his/her level by his/her design, collaborative writing, slide show ideas
A5: Many Ts provide Ss with different options for a project product: paper, documentary, website, etc. Love it!
I am so glad you shared this.
A5 as important as varied assessment and assignments is varied content whenever possible within your curriculum
A5 My classes are largely discussion based, many Ss have dyslexia or written output issues. Plus less talking for this T
Thanks for joining in on the convo Robyn. Hope all is well.
And don’t forget showing what they know could include cardboard, playdoh, and other fun non-tech tools that also don’t involve text
Evernote may be a great tool to share at Empower Hour! https://t.co/CRjYYYMpYB
is an app I suggest to Ts. A copy of instructor's notes in Google drive allows voice annotation. https://t.co/tjpvShxVet
A2: interactive notebooks, and reading notebook using modified version of Cornell notes. Would love to try sketch noting.
A5: Flexibility & student choice in assignments, activities, & assessments
like to ask "how can this tech help you learn more" https://t.co/WOYFvZufPN
The last thing you want is, "Use this technology in this way."
A5: my students get to act things out! They love it! Poetry, singing, journaling...I let them use any method to show me they know!
A5 If learning about something more personally interesting gets S to the same place, they'll be more motivated to learn the content
A5: Give Ss access to different creativity & publishing tools & the flexibility/Choice to use them !
A5: Love this Q! This is where I'm eXPloring this year, Lots of & , esp w/ & for assment
We are speaking about differentiaion & the LD student, but we all learn differently. Differentiaion should be in every classroom.
A5: post-it notes (during book clubs)
would make sense but admins hesitant to tell T's they need to use this or that
A5: Give Ss choice in the way they show what they've learned. Record a video, podcast, draw a picture, create a scrapbook...
Choices should be ways for kids to bring evidence they have mastered learning, not "different things to do in class"
Notes should spark conversation
Yes! Key is choice! https://t.co/VnByNPCEy0
A5: Give Ss choice in the way they show what they've learned. Record a video, podcast, draw a picture, create a scrapbook...
You can still do it! We provide free blogs for you to use :)
Exactly, I talk about needing to know themselves as learners.
what if they need to be out of our classroom skimming rocks on a pond?
q5 it depends. Try 2 hit MIs. However, Ss have 2 also hit the state test model so have experience w/format. https://t.co/pFjMAflDCR
Q5: What are ways you allow students to differentiate they way they show their understand and knowledge?
A5 challenge for us as Ts is to have a rubric/framework open-ended enough that we can see how that variation works for Ss
I think it's more about HOW the tech is used. Not a fan of categorizing apps by DOK.
A5: Ss & Ts work on self differentiation w/Meta Solutions PD team on Authenticated Learning https://t.co/5OTho5FOqg
Important to keep purpose in mind & allow Ss to create content that best suits their interests & abilities https://t.co/2lHu13iQkO
A5: Remind S's what we are learning is important to everyone; Ask: how can you show the world what you know & why it matters?
nope SAMR limits growth mindset in students and forces them toward a tech solution
Choice is everything. From the how of comprehension to the way of getting to that comprehension via tech tools. Boosts engagement
Have you used a "Menu" model? Ss chose from categories? https://t.co/VXkNuh8BvO
A5. Let learners take on various roles. Different options for homework, sharing, reflecting. All important.
Choices must be rigorous. Seen too many choice boards with lots of options for low rigor work.
I am SO glad I was woken up in time for this chat!
I would agree with you on that
RT : Find creative opportunities for our Ss to take notes. Learn new concepts Shift the Lift ...
Q5 Ss follow passions and self generate the inquiry and Ts provide them with listening speaking reading and writing choices to show
A5) Art, sculptures, iMovies & trailers, Prezis, songs, dance
If you want to make a tremendous difference in the lives of educators, turn them on to
A5: Students need to be given freedoms to follow their voice in the classroom-let them intergrate their learning into the teaching
A5 conversations with individuals and group discussions allow them to show they know the info in their own way
A5: Performance based assessments allow for choice, voice, & creativity
A5: I love using for students to show learning. is incredible too
I just did a modified project. LOVED it!
Unfortunately I'm presently not in the classroom, but soon I hope!
I would have to agree with Ross as well.
A5: Becomes tricky when a stdnt doesn't want to use tech at all. Can choose paper or tech, but there needs to be some balance.
Yes! these are all suggestions and possibilities, but its not about the tools its about the learner https://t.co/3qL60lUyyL
I think it's more about HOW the tech is used. Not a fan of categorizing apps by DOK.
I agree 100%. Using a opportunity or is a non-threatening assessment. https://t.co/djazvtYOLV
And don’t forget showing what they know could include cardboard, playdoh, and other fun non-tech tools that also don’t involve text
Is really easy! My 2nd grade Ss even make presentations to share with others.
Thank you, Vicki. This was a labor of love writing. I hope it's helpful:)
Sounds great. My problem with optional HW is "So it is worth doing or not?" If you know what I mean.
Trending Topics Now # # # #
I used to give homework choice too. Ss LOVED it. It was funny how they differed on which was the easy one.
A5: Make sure that differentiation does not lea to avoiding particular skills that we should engage with from time to time
What if we used the Girl/Boy Scout model to assess? - Earn badges: creativity-networking-resiliency-instead of grades? Result?

have by far the best audio nonfiction. Great for and . Fosters independence.
The chapter in my book - Classroom Instruction that Works 2nd ed. on note taking provides the research and recommendations
They LOVE post-it notes. LOL
A4 Change is hard. New times require new ways & offer new opportunities. Exciting, but fearful for many.
great point - I'm sure you supp this autonomy - Cornell notes shouldn't preclude recording ideas/sketching
ok being a newbie this is awesome thanks ..inspired
Keep talking about the topic of AT & meeting needs of diverse learners. Join us every Wed night @ 8PM Eastern for
Makes sense, focus now must be helping schools fund and implement steps to address helping whole child . https://t.co/lyFrLsxrHi
Always ask...Am I doing this because it's easier for me or because it's best for kids? Sometimes there is overlap. Sometimes not
Amen, the learner should always be the focus.
I'm excited to try it! Thanks for sharing!!
Grading projects for number of examples, frequency or coloring is a recipe for low level learning. Rubrics need to be about learnin
A5: Many paths to demonstrate mastery of learning targets vs a test per some arbitrary date on a calendar. Competency learning!
How about a balance of high & low tech and Ss choose best path for them?
Thanks for your interest! Can someone help Sarah?
We do a lot of talking. (they LOVE it!)
Really looking forward to a great day of learning! https://t.co/U32OLnHkGx
The BASD and are proud to host the event!
A3: Googling her now Maggie! Love what I'm seeing in urtweet. Continue to drop bombs on us u
Very true! for some tech isn’t answer, but need to expose tech & not tech options that aren’t print based https://t.co/9ZxwQBNrGA
A5: Becomes tricky when a stdnt doesn't want to use tech at all. Can choose paper or tech, but there needs to be some balance.
A5 different ways to respond are critical for stud but be sure rigor is there w/clear lrng targets so s can show understanding
I just saw some tweets from looked good. Are you here every saturday at 8 Eastern?
This applies in all subjects! If HW is assigned it should be application-based, not recall. https://t.co/0M0hl1thcK
I strongly believe we're not helping any Ss by giving them pages of homework in math every night, esp. those who struggle!
Always what is best for kids! Good point. https://t.co/0CKrIevoOz
Always ask...Am I doing this because it's easier for me or because it's best for kids? Sometimes there is overlap. Sometimes not
It can also make peer collaboration and review more accessible, more "doable" for Ss https://t.co/NSTeZfuaGD
A5: Performance based assessments allow for choice, voice, & creativity
Hello all--late to join, but lurking
Super easy! It's drag and drop. You can remix the order of content which makes it "eye candy" for presentation. 😄
John Hattie's research supports the ineffectiveness of this too. https://t.co/x1OseULFU3 https://t.co/Pir69R6Cd3
I strongly believe we're not helping any Ss by giving them pages of homework in math every night, esp. those who struggle!
Always remember that,
Allah sees you
A4 Technology avail- audio text, record notes, voiceover on devices help explanations, others…
A4: Students need to be active "Global" learners - Let them explore learning beyond the classroom walls
A5 providing opportunities for students to screencast for creating support tutorials.
is right. StuDents should be empowered to make meaningful choices.
A5: Choice boards, Harkness disc/Socratic sem, cubing, tiering, use of tech.
Right on has to be abt kids not "me"! https://t.co/LiTfHa9kGg
Always ask...Am I doing this because it's easier for me or because it's best for kids? Sometimes there is overlap. Sometimes not
- I think we are all making the same point. Unite Ts to help the Ss. I think we are on the same page.
Good point. Put yourself in the shoes of your Ss and ask will i enjoy this? Can it be done better / differently ?
A5 tch Ss to give each other HIGH QUALITY feedback (compliments+suggestions).Their HQF=great way2 assess their und of criteria
Trying to absorb all of the incredible thoughts and resources in ! Love the convos and pushing thinking!
A5: when assigning a project: don't structure it in a way so that you receive a class of the same. Ss shouldn't be cookie cutters
The only real way to show you've mastered learning is to apply it. That's where the IMO "student choice" thing struggles
A5: I work with young Ss. best app - students can record what they do, take a picture /narrate and Ps can see it.
A5 menu for demonstrating ...Visual, oral, written, physical rep, artistic...focus on the communication, reflection, metacognition
Q6: What is your understanding of UDL and how in applying its principles, you can address the needs of ALL learners?
Want to learn about reaching ALL Ss w/tech. Inclusive Tech Institute 6/25/16 Denver (day b4 ) https://t.co/gZZ8kN2xWl
Q6: What is your understanding of UDL and how in applying its principles, you can address the needs of ALL learners?
A5: Genius Hour is a great way for Ss to show in depth understanding of topic of their choice.
well said! https://t.co/NO2c8xzrOS
Always ask...Am I doing this because it's easier for me or because it's best for kids? Sometimes there is overlap. Sometimes not
even though cellphones not allowed in school, I let them take pics of my board notes, but they have to copy into notebooks.
A5: Make sure how we differentiate involves challenge - kids can do, so let’s not always allow for the easy route
A5: Use what they love! Speak their language. Why not allow them to create a musical.ly video at home?
It's ok to disagree. I'm sure there's much more in common. My Ss write, just don't lecture w/1 hr of note taking.
has his in bins and is cool
Absolultely look at class account there are some videos and pics of them creating!
A6. UDL principles lie in offering all Ss choice 2 display mastery from lower 2 higher order concepts/activities on same objective
Looking to bring a BootCamp to your school or district? Contact the Evolving Educators today!
A6 UDL How students respond/demonstrate their knowledge/skills & how students are engaged in learning. Critical teacher reflection!
I also use 2 add audio to Google Slides. There is also google app: voice recorder.
That was an eye-opener for me in first years of teaching; realizing what I was "assigning" was boring.
That's why I am a big believer in PBL and using rubrics.
have you read "Quiet"? Great book about the power of introverts. Makes u think about how 2 involve & honor https://t.co/0G5prFQTFZ
A5 My classes are largely discussion based, many Ss have dyslexia or written output issues. Plus less talking for this T
decided to fix it. Never looked back. :)
Overwhelmed ? Read many of these ideas here: Using Technology to Engage Students With Learning Disabilities https://t.co/hANnabvMDJ
Keep encouraging Ss bc tech changes and Adaptive Tech is sometimes a bit slower, takes time 2catch up. Great when it works!
2nd graders using ? I love it! Now if I can just get my on board! Dare I say principal? 😊 https://t.co/X2U0tB8bNU
Is really easy! My 2nd grade Ss even make presentations to share with others.
A6: Love graphis. More options=bigger reach. This is a good one Created by Learning by Design, LLC: https://t.co/tDNcjqIadi
Oh I see! Hopefully soon then :)
Yes. I find that they explain things much better when they record. More relaxed. My favorite app. https://t.co/QLJ8heagT0
A5: I work with young Ss. best app - students can record what they do, take a picture /narrate and Ps can see it.
Notes may just be the best low tech/no tech learning tool. Limitless possibilities for total participation.
Indeed! Rather than lots of homework, give lots of choice to scaffold their learning & demonstrate mastery.
That was a great book. I learned a lot about myself from that book. https://t.co/s4beeDxZr0
have you read "Quiet"? Great book about the power of introverts. Makes u think about how 2 involve & honor https://t.co/0G5prFQTFZ

remember assessing Ss should be like teaching. Differentiate. Some may do well verbal, others written etc KNOW your kids. Choice!
I want to learn more about STMath.
Gr8 idea!!! Acting out involves it all...read speak, listen writing! https://t.co/l4rG30YG84
A5: my students get to act things out! They love it! Poetry, singing, journaling...I let them use any method to show me they know!
I haven't but I'll definitely check it out!
So TRUE! Is it a "who cares" assignment-if so ditch it!
Good morning Keith! Great to be in this convoy with you.
A6. With UDL it's about the Who, the What, and the Why of learning for all Ss.
UDL: Goals ,methods, materials, assessment. Without 1 you have none!!
me too ;) Got them all over my table / workstation :)
Me too! Facing the realities of your classroom is the first step to changing it. https://t.co/qVP8EZc1Hp
That was an eye-opener for me in first years of teaching; realizing what I was "assigning" was boring.
Love it! We had a student create a video for a final project last year. It was amazing!
I'll check it out after promise!
A6: so many ways to assess learning. Just ask the Ss. They must have a voice too.
Differentiate= Have Ss summarize learning in a 140 character tweet-obseverve how THEY choose to condense & hightlight salient info
A6. By focusing on brain-based learning, we can tie our strategies to what really works. That is why UDL has such potential.
Would highly recommend! My Ss love their session and working on the website!
"Know your kids!" That is the most important piece in all of this https://t.co/cTeT0YYmvV
remember assessing Ss should be like teaching. Differentiate. Some may do well verbal, others written etc KNOW your kids. Choice!
Currently have 7 tabs open waiting to be read & digested after . My prospects for productivity around the house is decreasing. :(
This is a huge challenge at univ level. Also highest rates suicide any demographic group US: Native youth. https://t.co/M3hLKcVTRo
A5: when a Ss asks can I use this, do it this way most of the time I'll say "yes"
Always tried to use S created rubrics. But, the more I did PBL the less I thought they were necessary.
Yeah. If you as the teacher can see how terrible it is, but keep using it?
I tell my son he has to draw so I can finish .
A5: As long as students meet the co-constructed success criteria I encourage them to show me their learning in any way they want
You're singing my song Lisa!
starting 2 teach literacy in . Getting Ss 2 think about symbols, color, text, images & how they impact understanding.
Yes! An Instagram feel but is safe and secure. Kids love it. My 2 5th grds get on even w/out an assignment. https://t.co/FlcCooVbON
A5: I work with young Ss. best app - students can record what they do, take a picture /narrate and Ps can see it.
. Students really grow and take off when redefinition can be met in the SAMR model
love the name Empower Hour!
See, I stopped just short of saying "then you are a terrible teacher." I'm learning. :)
A6: UDL allows all Ss to showcase what they learned, in whatever format they choose. Shifts to DI all the time.
So true... if we don't want to do it chances are they don't want to do it either.
I've been intrigued by the book because I have a daughter who is introverted
A5: Allow multiple ways to show understanding: speeches, pwrpoints, prezies, videos, writings, labs, experiments, project-boards...
Ss love recording themselves and then hearing it. I have 8th graders who I recorded in 4th. LOL They love it!
Out with the old in with the new :)
Ha! I just accepted that today may not be the day for house stuff.
See, Gwen I talk about "oooooh, optional homework," and you bring the big guns, hahahaha. It's why I want your files!
I believe that giving Tchrs and Ss choices makes learning individualized.
Promoting autonomy and agency can help students succeed beyond the classroom, which should be the goal.
Common learning experience? Common assessment tool? Common rubric of mastery? Which matters most to you?
And sometimes (not always) if we don't want to correct their assignments/projects
Yes! , especially in a competency-based framework - is a true game changer for S engagement & growth.
What a while ride this morning with SOOO much great tools/info to take and share
THE one and only Rafranz answers my 'guided notes' question so eloquently as only She can. TY!
I had a sneak peak at the SS version coming out this spring. Can't wait!
A6: Let students take charge of the learning - teachers guide them down the path while the students explore.
Thank you for a thoughtful and amazing chat this morning! Great way to start the day! Stay warm! https://t.co/NGPc5bDpN8
Issue is always budget where if not enuff using resource then it is cut.
Always serving but challenging people to better themselves at the same time
Thanks, This has been my prof growth model that allows my Ss to demonstrate their learning. After all, it's about Ss.
A6 UDL - Begin with all kids in mind & design the lesson with them in mind! vs design a lesson & then try to make it fit all kids
I can't stay in the conversation and download the apps fast enough!
Love this! It is great and so many uses. We now share among all Ss. One place for Ps to go.
Thanks for sharing. How are Cornell Notes modified at the elementary level?
I agree with this 100%! https://t.co/sqQMMk2sYd
I had kids that hated Cornell. They wanted to sketch & record. Notes are personal and should be https://t.co/iqnPsBE1We
Cornell notes can be great for this reason - Ts may decide key terms, but Ss decide what they want to write
A5b For an ecosystems project students produced such a variety: 3D models, Prezis, Minecraft worlds, PPs and even written reports.
awww thanks! We love using too! Learnt this week that we have travelled 1.2m Skype miles!!
we talk about it as procedural information and recall. Not bad, just not sufficient for preparing kids for life
How Emily Dickinson & Lorine Niedecker wrote poetry.
"No rest from this condensery." LN
Two great models!
https://t.co/QtTGdUBYme
Differentiate= Have Ss summarize learning in a 140 character tweet-obseverve how THEY choose to condense & hightlight salient info
A6) The who, the what, the why should be the basis of lessons, focus is not mastery of tech or content, but mastery of learning
What a wild ride this morning with SOOO much great tools/info to take and share
we're trying to turn an enormous, lumbering district onto this model. Difficult.
Thanks for sharing this, . I was just about to ask what UDL is!
must read in world that elevates collaboration as verbal, highly interactive endeavor. Changed my thinking https://t.co/ncEkicFa4v
I've been intrigued by the book because I have a daughter who is introverted
A6: Build a UDL lesson/unit broad enough that ever child can access learning. All lessons/units? A lot of work! But over time...
1 of my fav things to do. Love talking to them.
This is "marketing." I ask myself "Would they/I choose to click on this?" If not, does it have value?
Hating that I missed another week of . Upper respiratory infection and meds have taken over. 🤒
Thanks for all the new tools to help my Ss take charge of their learning.
This is a must if using Chromebooks.
A6 UDL: opportunities for every S to feel successful and build confidence as learners. More accurate S assessment
One of the greatest tools of tech for ed. Able to get ideas out quick for slow writers. Just talk! https://t.co/frzOHVFE56
Yes setting projects we r excited about will mean that we will look forward 2 seeing the finished product
. also supports collaboration, communication, creativity~Bottomline "Get students interactively involved w/learning"
differentiated instr. is not just about allowing choices, it's about making learning poss. for every S!
https://t.co/FnSM4ybGWH
Thank you to for guest moderating . Keep fighting the good fight!
ahhhh that's great! I was hoping there would be one.
The more student-driven an activity is, the more the teacher has planned behind the scenes to make it successful
Fantastic! It's not an easy path to change, but when you do, you will never look back!
Thank you for being patient with my first chat. Enjoyed reading responses. See you next week
we have HS psych Ts using the standard version in classes
Sadly, I can confirm this from my 13 and 15 year old girls. https://t.co/QsX2CtQxQJ
So many Ts still think that learning is copying notes & studying for a test
lol I was cleaning the house before this started 2! https://t.co/pm6fFvJJsF
Currently have 7 tabs open waiting to be read & digested after . My prospects for productivity around the house is decreasing. :(
the problem with that picture is the word exam, not the same
I tell you, they do far more than I'd assign. Last week i got some Rated Questionable political commentary, lol
A6: Wasn't familiar with UDL, but will read up on it. Looks like a big checklist w/research sources. To ensure edus on right track?
The best teachers are open to change and input from their peers.
Thanks to my co-authoer of Using Technology with Students with LD for guest moderating today https://t.co/vxhwZq2X32
Pls feel free to contact me. I am sharing with Ss, skype how I am learning braille.Challenging, yet doing it.They identify!
When teaching kids a finite skill- altogether can make sense- when learning to apply that skill- choices can make sense.
We have outstanding individual Ts leading the way. Seeing progress.
Wow so many ideas today! Thanks !!
Great team!
Added to my toolbox & https://t.co/pIe3vCZdvt
Thank you to for guest moderating . Keep fighting the good fight!
Mahalo for having such a great topic to improve education for those with learning disabilities.
I hope my "newbies" from last week's conference were able to join!
I learned a lot today! Thank you everyone!
A6 Build a unit/lesson broad enough & diverse enough that all students can access learning! Lots to plan, but build units over time
Wow! That's cool. My daughter wants online/ virtual HS because of this!
My web site was many links Ss can use
Classroom discussions on Mindset & Carol Dweck. Huge improvement eliminating barriers & past negative mssgs holding them back
Every is like a quick/effective PD over coffee (and in my pjs)...best way to learn! Thanks!
Thanks who all joined in today to All the learners you impact will thank you! Tune in to Weds 8pm ET
Thank you for the great chat. Time to process. Happy Valentine's Day everyone.
It is. I'm writing a piece now about marketing & education. Will share w you. Our job: sell this #$%$. :)
Sign of a great lots of open tabs and bookmarked reading to keep me busy! Thanks!
Our apps use OpenDyslexia font and have the easiest user interface available. Perfect for assisted learning https://t.co/uvXGMpYTce
Never give up! We are doing this for the kids!
We take basic template but will make paper wide ruled, Ss still ask questions and create reflection/summary https://t.co/i3qDKIizlW
Thanks for sharing. How are Cornell Notes modified at the elementary level?
Thanks and for a cranking it's been a while for me! 😘
Students would be better off reading some clear text and then writing what they remember.
Kids must be able to articulate their mastery and not be dependent on teacher comments. W/o this, choice and options suck time
Thank you, , and . Need coffee, advil, and a week to digest an hour's worth of learning!
Thank you everyone great chat
A5 Students need supportive tech:
1. they can/may use in college & at work,
2. or will build skills to no longer need the tool.
Thx to & for a great convo. Hope to see some people on Wed nights @ 8PM for
18 yo son just got a 69 in precalc b/c of a bad notebook check. He's registered for the draft but 3-ring binder not ok.
Thanks PLN for another Sat morning of inspiring PD!
Absolutely, many need to know the purpose of it, why are we learning this, sustains their interest
A6. UDL =Flexibility representing information, flexibility how students show what they know, engaging&motivating tasks;CHOICE & AT
I'm assuming the 'at' is assistive technology?
Cool! Flick it over when you're done. Look forward to it.
This is how my brain feels after an hour of Thanks to all for the thought-provoking discussions and ideas! https://t.co/xAG1hIa15d
Great ! Can't wait to "lurk" back through and see what I missed. Thanks for helping me do what is best for my Ss learning.
Seems like the most efficient way to do that would be to give students some detailed readings and questions.
Thanks for the , as always, guest & regular moderators! Now to start the day! Bon weekend, all!
It's been a good experience for the kids; seeing across that extro/intro spectrum. Eye opener.
Missed again, but looking forward to reading all of the AMAZING insights now! Thanks in advance!
Love the choices on this site
Thanks for lots to think about ! Stay warm NY/NJ!
Thanks and for waking me up this morning!
Yes. I will be there. Presenting on Monday. Dyslexia and Tech. Must give credit to for her inspiration.
Sometimes it’s small changes like the width of lined paper templates that make a big impact
I'm excited to see the "student" version, getting those ideas into younger grades.
That's not quite true. See the testing effect: https://t.co/yFwUxw6Ls1 Trying to access our memory improves retention.
Aw, feel better! I've got a cold too... trying not to wake everyone up with my coughing
I grew my PLN and my understanding through today's ! Great discussions!
Great chat as always! Happy Saturday & enjoy the long weekend!
THNX to for a great morning of learnin'
The paradigm from sage to guide happened long ago. It's about Ss growth & learning, not mine. Except as a better T.
A5 Students need supportive tech:
1. they can/may use in college & at work,
2. or will build skills to no longer need the tool.
