This twitter chat stands for "Wins And Losses Ed Chat" and will be a chat where students reflect on the previous week to celebrate victories and reflect on losses to turn them into victories.
Hey #waledchat. Scott from Winchester VA checking in via tweetdeck. I promise that I will join in live next week. I am a HS ITC and am the founder of #fcpslearn.
Hey all! Phil from Northern Virginia. I teach 6/7 US History I&II and am the founder of #waledchat. Thanks for being here tonight! Hoping @ERobbPrincipal and @ToddRisser can make it tonight!
Hi #waledchat! I'm Cathleen from VA and teach 8th grade English. I also host a student empowerment chat called #UnlockingHeroes at 10 am EST on Saturday mornings.
#waledchat That moment you are having a math social get together after school, you look at your watch and it is already 6:50 and you forgot your Bible college class started at 6:30. So... I AM HERE TONIGHT! Great time with my coworkers. Jerry Toups aka #JediOfBelieve
A1: Socrative Seminars are my favorite with Ss. They take a lot of planning, but worth it. Ss raise the bar through this activity and engage in higher level thinking.
#waledchat
A1: @scratch is always a hit. Tough to say this year though, since my curriculum is a one-year deal before we transition into the STEAM Lab next year. I predict that the laser cutter will be the favorite toolset! #waledchat
A1: Mock Trench Warfare. Students LOVE it! They learn a lot about the mindset of soldiers in the trenches and realize some of the realities of the fighting. #waledchat
A1:I think the big thing that's a consistent win in my classroom is the goal for every kid to see and become a hero. We start off with a dinner to honor heroes in their lives, and then I give them the power to do service learning and take on problems in the community. #waledchat
A1: When I taught History, the biggest lesson win was a simulation of the Silk Road where Ss had to brave bandits, mtns, deserts and then trade. #waledchat
Hi #waledchat! Kristen here from PA, where I am getting ready to start our pink week! So many Post-it’s for students to write positive messages. We will put one on each locker of the school on Monday to kick it off! Oh, I teach 6th grade science.
A1: Every few months I host an open Mike night for our school’s a local BBQ restaurant. Families & friends come out to watch students perform and we get a cut from that night’s take which goes towards the school... fun times!!! #waledchat
A1) A consistent hit for me is anytime I do origami with students in my math class. I'm slowly developing some great math applications; Ss love the paper folding and seeing why certain things work out they way they do. #waledchat
A1: my Black Plague lesson is a hit - I transform my room and we do an investigation followed by a Black Death simulation. Ss love it and keep asking when it’s going to happen #waledchat
#waledchat A1 Every year I read a story I wrote on #ReadAcrossAmericaDay about my years in 5th and 6th grade when I was verbally bullied each day. The classes usually applaud at the end of the story. This is one of the chapters in my upcoming book. #AlwaysBelieve
A1: all of my Honors Geometry projects seem to be a hit. Especially the one that requires Ss to take pictures of geometric shapes around their town. I added an Instagram option which some Ss seem to love! #waledchat
A1: My students love anything immersive or gamified, so I do both often! Currently we have 2 books going & compete in a @quizizz battle each day. Book w/ higher accuracy rate gets to spin a prize wheel. They love it! #waledchat
A1 As I've been in leadership over many years - the big hit working with teachers is ensuring that in PL they have voice, choice & it's collaborative - they are provided time within the school day - being part of wider projects at district & attached to unis #waledchat
A1: using @270toWin interactive maps to examine past elections and teach the Electoral College. We use red/blue airheads for fun to predict results. #waledchat
A1: When I taught science, Rube Goldberg machines were my jam! We made ones that connected all over the classroom. In my new role, presentations that involve some sort of gamification increase T engagement and allow a little stress relief during PD. #waledchat
A1. Students love power points. 😂. Seriously, I don’t teach students anymore but I’ve seen success with activities that gives students choice. But often, they still need guidance. #waledchat
Anything where firsties can get up and get moving! They love ME bags in the beginningwhen they can share a bag full of things all about themselves. #waledchat
A1. It's slime every time! In teaching different states of matter, and talking about polymers. Ss love it. Second project, is the volcanoes, after learning about them and making them. Causing them to erupt. #waledchat
A2: In my new role as an ITC, one of the most important things I do is to listen more than I talk. I try to ask probing questions rather than tell what I think right off. #waledchat
A2: The most important thing that I do as I plan is make sure to provide student choice and voice. My goal is to help kids find their "why" or purpose and then fit the content into the students vision of who they want to be. #waledchat
A2: What do I want my students to know? In addition I also try to think about how I can make this learning engaging and relevant to my students. #waledchat
A2: creating lessons that engage all Ss at their own levels. Setting Ss up for success and mastery. Utilizing data to drive the instruction and planning. #waledchat
#waledchat A1 When we bring a speaker into the class either virtually or live. Engages the students and gives them a chance to ask questions and learn about their story. Here are a few of our speakers that have visited us at North White.
A1: Im a first year teacher, but one lesson that I loved and know that I will do again was my toothpaste lesson during the first week. A lesson to show how easy it is to say something harmful (squeezing the bottle), but hard to take back (putting the toothpaste back). #waledchat
A1 - EOY learning camp for ALL of first grade. It’s a long standing school tradition that builds family and all the older students “remember when” - I’ve never been a part of anything so identity-building, engaging and fun! They learn a ton! @Beachland_ES#waledchat
A2: being aware of my Ss struggles and levels of stress. If I know my Ss have hit their limit, I try to slow things down and provide time for encouragement, all while maintaining high expectations. #waledchat
A1. I’m the lead facilitator on our Culture Committee. Slice of Ts to get our building back on track. That’s been pretty consistent with positive feedback. #waledchat
Ok so I was going to make a cake to celebrate 6 months being on crutches because...well what else can I do? then my fridge broke (new one coming tomorrow) I only had 2 unhardboiled eggs. The other one ended up in my pocket on Tues because I thought it was hard boiled. #waledchat
A2: I try to be creative - how can a unit be educational, fun, challenging, offer choice (doing my best with this), relevant, prep for life after high school... #waledchat
YES! I always introduce the activity that way. It’s so fun. Several classes have asked to recreate their own video. I didn’t go down that route, but boy would it have been fun! #waledchat
Q1: Composing books filled with student literature. I use #StudentTreasuresPublishing each year. The Ss take so much pride in their work and it is always a hit with the Ps. #waledchat
A2 Knowing & understanding who I'm working with whether is with teachers or students - really having an understanding of where they are situated on the learning continuum #waledchat
A1. Started a Music Technology Class this year. PODCASTING has been a hit. I thought the kids would hate it. NOPE! they love it. Its the word they live in. #waledchat
A2: thinking about what I want my students to get. Balance is key for me. AP is really different and it’s part pushing them but also setting it up so they know they can still be successful, even if it’s small. #waledchat
A2. For planning, it’s so important to build in formative assessments to make sure you aren’t leaving Ss behind. Just like a field trip, you count Ss all the time to make sure you have them all. Same with a 90-min lesson. #waledchat
A2: The ultimate thing I want my kids to learn. Also like to include different ways for students to see how they may have showed growth with each skill #waledchat
As I plan, I consider: What prior knowledge do Ss have? How far can I push them? And always a consideration of time... how long the lesson takes to plan, how long the activity takes to execute #waledchat
#waledchat A1 Fortunate to have Brad Long, Buddy from the movie Hoosiers, Philo Barnhart, creator of Ariel from The Little Mermaid 🧜♀️ and Kyle Cook of Matchbox 20 join us live and share their stories.
Q2: Data! It guides all my instruction. I can't know where we are going if I do not know where we have been and what was/was not successfully. #waledchat
A2: It is important for me to think about my students and how they interact with assignments/lessons. How can I impact them the best? It can be different for each class. #waledchat
A2 - knowing my students. My goal is to have a PhD in WHO they are and HOW they are smart so I can capitalize on their strengths and help them find LOVE for learning. I am also passionate about the lessons meeting individual needs, I super heart differentiation! #waledchat
A2: what’s important for my planning is keeping my Ss in mind - am I providing choice? Am I making sure they are using the 4C’s? Will this empower or engage them in some way? #waledchat
Intro to #waledchat... I’m late! I’m Jennifer from No. Va., an Autism Educator (paraprofessional), Interact Club sponsor and HS spirts bleacher bum. Tagging @khoggardGRT for the chat!
A2 I am trying to focus on engagement. So I am looking for ways to make the curriculum more engaging for my first graders. Some things are easier than others. I use a lot of tech hooks. #waledchat
A2. I can’t jam up my day so I must have flexibility but I plan to meet at least 3 non negotiables: teacher obs or write up, celebration visit, presentation work. #waledchat
A2. EVERYDAY! I used to think I could wing it. 21 years is a long time to be in a classroom. Plan every day. Plan every lesson. Kids are different. Be flexible. #waledchat
A2: That everything is student-centered. I've had days where taking one lesson route would be easier for me to facilitate, but not reach all my students. I need to remember that the classroom isn't about what's easiest for me, but what's best for my students. #waledchat
Q1: I co-teach Social Skills and role playing ACTUAL situations for our Ss ALWAYS drives home the lesson. Once they SEE it, they understand and can adjust behaviors and conversations accordingly. #waledchat
Q3: Positive communication with parents. It iz easy to get wrapped up in the business of teaching, but these positive ineractions are a must. It is currently onw of my wigs!
#waledchat#leaderinme
A3: I wish I was better at helping kids manage stress. I listen to their anxiety and problems, but I want to become more informed on how to ease my students burdens. #waledchat
A3: I have always felt like classroom management was a strong suit of mine, but this semester is challenging me. Not being a core content teacher and only have Ss for a semester instead of the whole year changes the game just enough to make it difficult all over again. #waledchat
A2: Ensuring I am meeting my Ss where they are at; being sure I am assessing my Ss knowledge not their behaviors; providing engaging opportunities for my Ss to learn in ways that fit their style. #waledchat
A2: Alignment to the objective, working toward the end goal, purposefully planning high level questions, multiple chunks, modeling, student interest and curiosity, frequent checks for understanding, cooperative learning with @KaganOnline ALL DAY EVERY DAY! #waledchat
Q2- That I am reaching all students in the classroom regardless of their learning level. That my lesson is better than it was the previous year! #waledchat
A3: #waledchat as educators I dont think we very master anything with all the constant change, but I wish I were better at planning ahead. I envy those who have several weeks mapped out.
A3: I want to be better at differentiation. I feel like some of my kids are so capable, and I want to be better so they have opportunities. I also want to be brave and stand up for others and what is right. #waledchat
A3: I wish I was more tolerant of parents' antics, and had more of a poker face. My go to **** demeanor is very apparent. Parents who opt out really irritate me. #waledchat
A3 I need to incorporate more primary sources. I have gotten away from it a lot the last 2 years. I need to find fun ways to help the Ss use the sources. #waledchat
A3. As a supervisor, I wish I was better at understanding how STEAM could be integrated into social studies. Everyone wants STEAM. So instead of fighting it, I’d rather join it. But making the connection meaningful isn’t easy. #waledchat
I have a menu of items that I present to my Ss each day. Sometimes we team stack cups to the ceiling, sometimes we do alphabet soup (a movement activity). Giving kids the options gets them more willing to participate. #waledchat
A3: Seriously, keeping up with the mundane. I’m TERRIBLE at keeping up with paperwork, 6 thousand meetings, filing, etc. I rock instruction. It’s the secretarial side of teaching where I fail miserably. And, though a much smaller part of our job, it still matters. #waledchat
#waledchat A3 My wife tells me I am a softiee. I maintain my classroom through a barrage of postive reinfocement and love. Sometimes I wish I could be a "when I am coming back I am cracking skulls" teacher. #AlwaysBelieve
A3 In reflecting on this - I think self-care would be something I'd would have really liked to focus on while in working in schools - well-being for all - students, teachers, & all staff - looking at ways to improve this within the school #waledchat
#waledchat A2 Making learning engaging and realistic. As a social studies teacher, I want students to be able to ask questions and here the true story. Had a great session with 1980 Olympic Hockey Team Captain Mike Eruzione.
https://t.co/9jMOLVu7SN
A3. As a T is was getting graded work back within a 72 hour turnaround. As admin it’s having those resources available to help Ss, Ts, & families. #waledchat I have a bunch more but not enough time. Lol
A3: finding ways to reach students that aren’t motivated by grades or the content. One on one works sometimes but still tryin to help them see beyond the lesson. #waledchat
A4: Honestly, I'm just doing what I can to get through this year, because next year, management will be a brand new beast. I've relied on my mentor and the 8th grade team for advice on specific students. #waledchat
A4: I just found out that @htrude07 has done a ton of work and I plan on seeking out her input. I am also reading a book Learning Transported by @JaimeDonally. #waledchat
A4: I want to take at least one unit this Spring and figure out how to implement stations effectively. Fortunately our school as a "Station Learning Master" in @MathWithMsHawes I can learn from as well! #waledchat
A4: My county is offering a class on trauma which I plan to take in the future. For right now my goal is to find some twitter chats and talk to other great educators about what they do. So...what do you do to help with student anxiety? #waledchat
A3: I wish I was better at remembering that my Ausome kiddos do better with fewer words. That’s tough for this “Chatty Cathy”. Our Gen Ss love that I talk w/them about social media, sports, etc. Ausome kids: not so much. #LessIsMore#waledchat
A3: I wish I was better at differentiation. I think there is always a need for better quality differentiation in any classroom because our Ss needs change so much. #waledchat
A3: Asking for help. I always feel like a burden when I ask for help. As educators, I know we always have a million and one things to do, so I just chicken out in asking for help because I dont want to add on to any stress 😕. #waledchat
A3: making more real world applications in my advanced classes. I find it difficult to make connections with some of the abstract concepts to the lives of middle school Ss. #waledchat
A4: #waledchat I have a great group of teachers and admin at work to assist when I have Qs. I also found that chats like this and social media connections have helped a great deal with new ideas and perspectives!
A3: deciding which of my dreams to follow through with. I have tons and sometimes I go down paths that don’t go anywhere. And I do a lot of things, but I feel like I could do a few things well instead of a lot of things ok. #waledchat#wanttochataboutthissoon#selfishrequest
Hi everyone, Ashley Hawkins from Chillicothe Missouri where I teach 4th grade. Sorry for jumping on late I’ve been helping my son study for his fractions test. #waledchat
A4: Tag in my team! @jamiemccormick9 and I split up some recent paperwork for our students, and it was SO MUCH EASIER. Team McPowellmick for the win! #waledchat
A4: My partner-in-crime @osambrose is SUCH a great risk-taker! We make a great team bc I'll get excited about an idea & SHE will make it happen! We did squishy circuits with first graders on Monday and it was AMAZING... not sure I would have jumped into that w/out her! #waledchat
Q4: My neighbor teacher! She is literally my rock, teacher bestie, and prayer warrior. She can use her experience to guide my decision making skills. #waledchat
A4: I work in a school with an AMAZING special education team that is always willing to work on strategies to differentiate. They are all willing to work as a team to do what's best for our students. #waledchat
A3: I wish I was better at removing my emotions from conflict. I overanalyze & struggle with not having a poker face, so when in the midst of conversation, my face tells all. #waledchat
A4: My teaching partner & mentor! She said I’ve improved, esp. w/ one S in particular who tends to argue everything said to him. But I have to remind myself DAILY that fewer words are better w/ him and several others. #waledchat
I have a mission card system that is INCREDIBLY motivating for those kinds of kids in my classes. Let me know if you’re interested in knowing more. #waledchat
YES - That was my goal last year, to make my "yes" a solid "yes" and realize saying "no" to one thing meant having the change to say "yes" to something else! #waledchat
#waledchat family BIG NEWS THIS WEEK! A St made a video documentary about my career and it MADE THE TX STATE FINALS! It is one of the top 6 projects! State finals are March 2! If you haven't seen it this is a must watch 7 minute video. https://t.co/QyCVXGNNqe
A4 Certainly in the area of well-being - there is a great deal of research, resources & within schools additional support staff e.g psychologists, counsellors etc. - seeking out expertise in this area - also providing personal time for exploration of self-care #waledchat
A4: @ScottOste and @m_schoeneberger. They think very differently than I do and can help with logistics and making my ideas productive rather than creative chaos. 😂 #waledchat
Thank you so much for the shout out, Scott! I would love to help you in any way I can. I have done even more VR work since doing the webinar and the article. Lots of cool #appsmashing with VR. #waledchat#fcpslearn
I 💗 that you have someone on campus to show you the ropes on this! I’d love to see a “History In Motion” Day here kids move through time periods or battles of a particular war! #HistoryBuff#waledchat
A4: I have a great team of people where I am. I could go to any of them, which is a blessing. It has not always been that way. Teaching is not a competition. I'm here for anyone who needs to ever talk or wants help! #waledchat
A4: I have a great network of teachers in my district and one I’ve met over the years. I love trying what works for others. Askingy Ss too. If I can do what they suggest, I try it. #waledchat
A4: I have already learned so much from those I confide in & look forward to learning LOTS more!!! I’m def a work in progress; aren’t we all?! #waledchat
A4: I keep looking for strategies other teachers use to help students understand primary sources. Something besides SOAPS. What do other people do? #waledchat
A5: A consistent habit I participate in each week is educational twitter chats. It's like my own personal PD in 30 minutes or less. I learn from what other great educators are doing and I strive to become better! #waledchat
A5: In school, planning ahead. I keep things flexible enough to change day to day, if needed, but I like to have a solid, broad plan that spans a couple weeks at least. At home, exercising in the morning. #waledchat
A5: I consistently lift at the gym at least 3x a week and participate in twitter chats at least that many nights as well.
At work, I also try to share a resource or PD opportunity every week.
#waledchat
W5. When I taught I had a few traditions with students that we did each class. It helped build community. I think they liked it. Now, I send a weekly newsletter for teachers sharing ideas. #waledchat
A2- My first thing I think about is what is my pacing guide that I have to follow or the content being taught. Then, what do my ss know already, how do they learn, how hard can I push them to make progress. #waledchat
A5: Running for self-care. Important to take care of myself to unwind and destress. Makes me better for my Ss and teammates at school. Today is day 85 in my quest for 365 in a row. #waledchat
A5: #waledchat Continuing positive communication with parents and families. Students need to see that the door swings both ways. Developing rapport with students and families leads everyone to better success.
A5: Twitter chatting. The other night a chat helped me come up with a genius plan to involve parents! Never would have thought of it by myself. Now... to actually put it into action... 😂 #waledchat
A5: Does coffee count? We have a class meeting each Wednesday. Students lead it, and they discuss negatives, positives, questions, and ideas. They also help solve issues by collaborating. #waledchat
A4. Teaching our Ss, breathing exercises, relaxation exercises, working with them on little tricks and things that may help them in learning subject matter. Finding out the why they dislike the subject matter, was it a bad experience? #waledchat
A4. Im building admins to converse with but ultimately I’m looking for a work therapist to bounce ideas off of. Im not a big fan of airing work gripes to colleagues. I don’t like the idea of being misquoted or misrepresented. #waledchat
A5 Chatting to amazing educators across the globe - this truly has been an amazing experience learning so much & developing a sense that we all share a passion for education #waledchat
A5: always try to preserve the weekends for family time. I often get wrapped up in work during the week so need to make time to find balance. #waledchat
A5: For my family it’s Pizza Night every Friday! For me it’s my small group bible study on Tuesday nights & working in the kitchen to feed our high school youth group Wednesday nights before their meeting! #SelfCare#waledchat
A5: This may sound minuscule, but my 5th grade son comes from the middle school to junior high by bus. When he comes to my 8th hour at the tail end of the day, I purposefully interact with him to model a good parent to son relationship. #waledchat
A4: I put parent communication for Q3, but I’m going to morph that into general follow up. In my current role, I plan to use @BethHouf’s daily schedule document. It will help me be more intentional about my time and about meeting the needs of my Ts. #waledchat
#waledchat A5 Forgot this week, but Thursday is my Bible College class. Every Friday morning I celebrate with breakfast @ChickfilA Wednesday night I do #txed chat and on Thursday (if not in Bible college) it's #waledchat and... Church on Sunday.
A3- I wish I was better at making higher level activities/lessons for my high achieving ss. Being a former sped teacher I can break things down, just not that great going deeper. #waledchat
Collaborating with my colleagues. We have a great department - very open, sharing lots of ideas, open to suggestions. We learn a lot from each other and are very supportive. It is habit for me to go to them with issues, concerns, and ideas. They all help make it work! #waledchat
