Hi #masterychat! Tika, a 2nd grade teacher and mentor from Las Vegas. I was hit hard with inequity in education because I was always the new kid (11 elementary schools) who needed be in the low group.

Angelo, HS Principal from NC.
Every time states assign school grades based on test proficiency scores, we are dealing with equity issues.
Affluent schools look great; schools with poverty look terrible.
This isnāt usually the case.

Trevor, here. French teacher from Gilbert, SC
My first field trip cost students an amount of money most would shrug at and I had Ss who weren't able to attend because that wasn't an amount they could spare.
#masterychat
Craig from Pa. HPE and creator of #teachpos. When I first started teaching, it was scary how little many families and schools had both economically and socially. #masterychat
Hey! Tyler. Inequity occurs every day when we fail to teach to our outliers. The most glaring is our state & national testing that use words and experiences that not all kids have had an opportunity to experience but expects them to be able to relate.
#MasteryChat
Me posting a picture of my partner and I out on date night with adult drinks, being reprimanded for posting, but others are posting pics doing the same thing with the boss #MasteryChat
A1 Kris MacBury from DE/PA Unfortunately my team faces equity issues for our students who have been failed by "our system" as their needs haven't been met even partly, let alone half way each enrollemnt pd. So every 6 weeks

Shelley, Grade 3 GECDSB Windsor Ontario. I donāt mean to be cynical, but I think inequity in education surrounds us everyday. Be it the way staff treat one another, perceive students, students against students, systemic barriers, access for certain communities. #MasteryChat

Hello, Tom Koenig here from MD. My first 2 years in the classroom were in W Baltimore and nothing was equitable, from the rotting facility to the curriculum. #masterychat

I am an admin in a title 1 school and we face inequity all the time. However, I dare say it is not economics, rather it is inequity in belief in students and their home lives #masteryChat#equityInEducation
Roman from Ontario, Canada.
HS ELA Teacher/Student Success Leader/Agent of Transformation.
I see inequity in education often when students who canāt keep up with the one speed assigned are penalized or deemed less intelligent.

Greetings, all! Ben here from Western NC. Former math & physics teacher in a #PBL & #competencyed school that worked to closed the equity gap every day...now helping others do the same. #MasteryChat
#MasteryChat when I was first getting into Ed many parents were reluctant and expressed concerns about a Male Kindergarten teacher. I was told that I would not be nurturing enough.
MaryRose from NY , when Ts of AP Courses tell intro level teachers to be more strict/rigorous to weed out the kids who arenāt prepared for AP Rigor. #MasteryChat
A1 Culliope from NH here, middle school educator. A big inequity I see is that who gets access to what services often depends on how much of a fuss their parents make, so students without home support don't get as much school support either! #masterychat
My q is how do we reach all our Ss- how do we give them the skills to self self regulate and self advocate & self motivate? How do we raise mor Ss up? #MasteryChat
A1) It looks like giving each student what he/she needs to be successful. Different things for different kids because they are all...wait for it...different from one another.
This includes letting them demonstrate mastery using their strengths.
#MasteryChat#equityineducation
One of the most glaring inequities in education I see now, maybe because of the personal famy connection to it, is the lack of special education resources for our youngest learners. #masterychat
A1: Equity in a classroom is planning and doing for the whole, yet being purposeful to support every student where they are at to help them reach the next level. May sound like pie in the sky but our kids deserve it. #masterychat
Every child is served, for their own individualized needs. Educators are culturally competent and know how to approach teaching from a standpoint that all kids can learn. #MasteryChat A1
A1: Equity in the classroom = recognizing the individual needs and talents of every student (and not through the typical deficiency model) and then helping each one find customized supports to grow. Every day. Every lesson. #MasteryChat
#masterychat - A1 - Equity looks like the teacher not being the gatekeeper of education. Equity in a classroom looks #studentcentered with a teacher as a guide to learning and students getting the support they need in achieving that goal.
My q is how do we reach all our Ss- how do we give them the skills to self self regulate and self advocate & self motivate? How do we raise mor Ss up? #MasteryChat
A1: Equity in a classroom is planning and doing for the whole, yet being purposeful to support every student where they are at to help them reach the next level. May sound like pie in the sky but our kids deserve it. #masterychat
A1. Equity in the classroom stems from a place of knowledge, acceptance, and understanding. Educators need to know the students they're working with, try to grasp the challenges they're facing, the strengths they're bringing to the table, and see their experiences... #masterychat
A1 T needs to plan for everything through an equitable lens, establishing relationships w Ss & believing they will succeed. He/she cannot lower expectations for anyone & should proving for opportunities. #masterychat
Charlsie from Alabama here. Inequity is knowing my former Ss in the Mississippi Delta & Metro Nashville TN have no textbooks or working tech while my current Ss in a Bham suburb have an excess of resources to show mastery #MasteryChat
A1 Equity in the classroom is seen when we respect every student for who they are. That we use their stories, their voice often. That we respect their speed, rhythm & differentiate our learning. We must offer choice and listen. Equity is not equality. It is tailored. #masterychat
Been in schools and districts where gender was the main consideration for a teacher position. I'm fairly confident that makes no difference š #masterychat
A2. (cont) ... as evolving, living, and breathing. Equity requires openness and a willingness to confront your perceptions and biases for the better. #masterychat
A1: equity is about meeting every child where they are and helping them to feel success in learning. This might not look exactly alike but each kids gets their needs met. #masterychat
#masterychat - As a male who works in two elementary schools, I don't liek the stereotype that for some reason I am not comfortable around little kids. I have two kids of my own!
Equity is believing every student can learn + wants to learn + making spaces for them to do it no matter where they are in their learning progression. This requires teachers to trust their students, honor their literacies + develop meaningful relationships with them. #MasteryChat
A1 T needs to plan for everything through an equitable lens, establishing relationships w Ss & believing they will succeed. He/she cannot lower expectations for anyone & should proving for opportunities. #masterychat
A1. Equity in a classroom means that all Ss get the necessary resources and and services to meet their learning needs that the school system provides! #masterychat
A1 At my school, equity means everyone has the opportunity to thrive, shine as bright as they desire and be as happy as they were born to be... obstacles are removed so they can realize and reach their "wings"
#masterychat#schoolHAPPINESScounts
A1- equity in the classroom is about working as a team where everyone is supported and valued for what they bring to the table, and that if they can't get to the table, we get the table to them! #masterychat
A1 equity in a classroom is evident when a teacher realizes the needs of all students and builds appropriate supports that enable students to reach their level of excellence.Never giving up on a single student. yes this includes behavior supports #masteryChat#equityInEducation
A1: Equity looks like exhausted Ts bc itās tiring work-modifying, translating, chunking activities/lessons So all Ss can access the content at their own pace in their own language, experiencing success #masterychat
Representing all groups and demographics in learning via literature & problem solving. It š like honest, open tasks that reflect and celebrate a host of learning styles & strategies. True differentiation of tasks. True respect, love and acceptance of individuals. #MasteryChat
A2: Different struggles w/ students. Some students are highly motivated while others are not.
Some students come from a background of love and positivity while others do not.
Outside factors play a role. How can we change this for our students? Building trust. #masterychat
A1: equity is opportunity. Opportunity to redo, learn multiple ways, to fail but not face a penalty, and be able to grow from where the student is ability wise at.
#MasteryChat
A1: Oooo, to start equity should include a teacher who loves all of their Ss equally, doesn't play favorites, and affords all the kiddos the same kindness, patience, and respect - no matter how challenging some are more than others! #MasteryChat
A1 - Equity looks like every student having the same opportunities for success. This means socially, emotionally and physically. Financial dependence is also important, but this is harder to control. #masterychat
A:All students are given the tools they need to be successful, accomplish goals, and have a diversified plan to help them attain the level of knowledge that is within their grasp. #masterychat
A2 The limitations and labels we put upon kids and ourselves is what I see to be one of the biggest obstacles when creating an equitable classroom. #MasteryChat
Two great point! Every support will be as different as the children we are teaching (why would we think otherwise is beyond me) AND demonstrating mastery in a way that is specific to their strengths. YES! #masterychat
A2 In 280 characters? From overstuffed curriculum, overstuffed schedules, inadequate tech, there are so many obstacles. But a patient and focused approach helps... #masteryChat
A2 There are many obstacles that are outside our own control. It is easy to blame finances, unsupportive legislation, parents, admins, other teachers. When it comes down to it, all we can do is address the obstacles we are capable of addressing! #masterychat
A2: I think misunderstanding is a large obstacle. Many think that equality is equity. In reality every student needs something different, therefore the resource distribution may not always come out evenly #osussmce#masterychat
A2 the difficult part of equity in the classroom is the preparation and anticipation a teacher must have when planning lessons. #GottaHaveAPlan#masterychat
A2: I think sometimes it can be hard to meet some students needs that have unique issues. Finding solutions for each individual is a difficult task. #masterychat
STEM education at its best teaches students how to think logically ā to break down every challenge, whether mathematical or societal, and to iterate until it is solved. https://t.co/eJb3u3HoPI#teachbetter#masterychat#STEM
A2: Often times outside variables contribute to the struggle to create equity in the classroom. If we can build enough support for a student to conquer those variables, we have the opportunity to change student trajectory. #masterychat
A2. It has Ss doing different but related things based on the teacher meeting the learning needs of all Ss. The method uses differentiation but the academic results are somewhat equal with little if any gaps. #MasteryChat
A2: oversized classrooms is what makes it difficult at times to provide all the resources needed for all the different learners when they need them! #MasteryChat
A2. Biggest challenge for me was staying SUPER organized and using individual assessment data in an ongoing manner to move students ahead when needed. #masterychat
#MasteryChat - A2 - So many obstacles! The biggest is TIME! We need more time to consider how to best reach all students and vet all of the resources/research available to do so.
A1 Equity is each human being getting what they need when they need it. It's not about treating each person the same, it is about treating each person in the way that allows them to be the best version of themselves. #masterychat
A2 I want to reach every child in every way I can and when I canāt get to everything I wanted to it wasnāt for lack of effort or want but rather time. Time time time is what limits me when it comes to providing equity in the rich ways I want to. #masterychat
A2: The institutionalized status quo that says one-size-fits-all is somehow okay. Easier? Yes. Equitable? No way! It takes a culture change and hard work to produce the needed paradigm shift, but that's the work we have to do. #MasteryChat
We have 2 male 1st grade teachers in our building. They are wonderful, interact with our littles and are doing a great job. Being open, honest and real is what matters not your gender. #masterychat
A2: having the data to know where you're kids are at, time, proper planning template or toolkit, and reflection. Have to be able to plan for confusion before it happens.
#MasteryChat
Everyone do the same thing at the same time in the same way for the same reason...
...because we assume...
youāre all the same;
you all need the same thing(s)
at the same time
in the same way.
This is a recipe for disaster in todayās world.
#MasteryChat#equityineducation
A1: An equitable classroom is a just classroom where the vision, procedures, goals, & actions on the part of Ts & Ss lead to just outcomes. If at any time these parts of the equations are off or unjust, equitable classrooms address the issue #MasteryChat
A2:Time and time. Creating opportunities and experiences that provide what all students need take time and an immense amount of brain power. #masterychat
A2 the Amin obstacle is lack of a #growthMindset teachers, families, students, admin etc. our most famous scientists, mathematicians, writers did not learn in modern technology. They had strong wills to learn and challenge themselves #masteryChat#equityInEducation
A2: Not enough time to plan for equity. Not enough teachers/resources to be able to differentiate for every child. Lack of PD focused on equity. Implicit biases that educators are unaware of. #masterychat
Q3: #masterychat The greatest tools I have are my colleagues in the building. They have great ideas and are willing to help me integrate PBL and technology to make my classroom more equitable.
A2: We keep pretending that students are born in batches, raised in batches, and learn in batche and any attempts to change the system are met with intense opposition: the "it was good enough for me" attitude. #masterychat
A2. As with so many barriers across education, equity is affected by resource availability: time, funding, prioritization, and supports. Students have varying needs based on their backgrounds and experiences, and without the right data and devices to reach Ss where.. #masterychat
A2: having the data to know where your kids are at, time, proper planning template or toolkit, and reflection. Have to be able to plan for confusion before it happens.
#MasteryChat
A2: I think the way the education is set up and runs creates inequality. It is hard to find the resources and support that all students need. Sometimes to support the whole child we need to support the family and more than the 4 walls of a school can offer. #masterychat
A2: Every Ss doesn't have the same resources at home. As with everything, time and funding are obstacles. It's important to do what we can despite any obstacles, though. #MasteryChat
A3: Although I have not had my own classroom yet, I think it is important to get to know each student individually so you can understand their needs. #masterychat
A2 - Obstacles. Lack of willingness to have open, honest convo. Fear of offending. Fixed mindset. Hard hearts. History: āThe way its always beenā. Resistance to ask hard questions & accept answers that may be difficult to reconcile within personal value systems. #MasteryChat
Grading + assessment structures can be inequitable because they measure compliance rather than skills + a laser focus on compliance can leads to inequities in who gets disciplined + how. We need to think about grading with an equity lens + using restorative practice. #MasteryChat
A2b - Equity isnāt equal. No two schools are exactly the same. But, itās feasible that every classroom treat students with dignity, respect and love. High expectations #1 rule. #masterychat
Yes! I have to have those uncomfortable conversations and realize that I am very likely bringing inherent bias into the situation, whether I realize it or not. #MasteryChat
Yep, but oversized clasrooms are just a symptom of a larger issues -
underfunding Ed -
which is a symptom of a larger issue -
undervaluing Education.
#MasteryChat#equityineducation
A2: oversized classrooms is what makes it difficult at times to provide all the resources needed for all the different learners when they need them! #MasteryChat
A2 Big challenges are often time and money. We need to change the mindset that we cannot teach to the whole class all the time. We need to change our way. Worksheets need to replaced with richer tasks. Planning for multiple learning sessions goes against our way. #MasteryChat
A2: besides implicit biases, āthey just canāt do it!ā time& courage- when we lack courage to speak up for every single student& time to work until equity is reached #MasteryChat
A2: A lack of creativity can cheat Ts out of creating equitable environments. Throwing money at "the problem" seems easy but can also reinforce the idea that we need money to be our best selves. #masterychat
Keep pushing for early interventions--and not just the primary grade teachers. We need all teachers across the board to agitate for early intervention and provide evidence that it works better than waiting until students are testing age. #masterychat
A1 T needs to plan for everything through an equitable lens, establishing relationships w Ss & believing they will succeed. He/she cannot lower expectations for anyone & should proving for opportunities. #masterychat
A3 - I treat every student like they are somebody of worth. Iām lucky that my district had many advancements which help kids. The emotional piece is where I see the need for the greatest growth. #masterychat
It's really hard for teachers to give up control + reduce the power asymmetry between them + their students, but that level of trust + that level of agency is vital if we're hoping to truly move toward equity. #MasteryChat
A2- time and focus matter. We have so many initiatives that split our focus, that it can be hard to make the things you really value a priority! #masterychat
A3: Frequent monitoring and talking to Ss in the room, asking questions for understanding. Being 1:1 w/ Chromebooks allows Ss to complete assignments at home offline, if needed, and sync when they return to school. We provide areas Ss can work before & after school. #MasteryChat
A2. The #1 obstacle is rigid timelines based on passing state standardized tests. Ts do not have the time they need to meet the needs of all of their Ss. They must reach certain topics by certain times. Not necessarily based on student mastery. #MasteryChat
Time is an excuse. If you're truly operating with in equitable lens, it's a part of everything you do. Maybe in the beginning when you're just become aware, but after that it's an excuse #equityineducation#masterychat
A3 Assessments (informal, summative, formative) are a crucial tool for me. I LOVE retrieval practice grids in place of more formal tests and quizzes. I need Ss to honestly answer to honestly assess what I need to change so they can learn! #masteryChat
Do we ever feel like we will have all of those resources? I believe we need to make lemonade with the lemons we are given. #kidsDeservit educators are the main conduit for change regardless of our resources. Just my opinion #masteryChat#equityInEducation
A3: appropriate tasks, tools for growth in all areas, progress monitoring on both ends of the tier spectrum..... building the relationship so that I know my student is always my number 1! #Masterychat
A3: The special ed DC and the equity lead in our building are invaluable resources. I use Google Classroom to push out a variety of resources so kids can help me differentiate for them/guide themselves. Built in scaffolds that are easily accessible for all are key. #masterychat
A3: At this point I use all of the teachers around me. Most of them have worked in urban education for many years, so they have been constantly faced with these challenges for their entire career. #osussmce#masterychat
A2: A great teacher as Todd Whitaker saysā¦great teachers lecture, poor teachers lecture, great teachers use tech, poor teachers use tech. and the list goes on, the variable is the teacher! #masterychat
Current obstacles to creating an equitable classroom include institutional oppression/prejudice/bias, segregation in our society, lowered expectations thanks in part to instant gratification, & lack of buy-in from Ts and/or Ss #MasteryChat
A3- choice and voice. If kids can choose how they show their learning, can work in the way that suits them best and have a strong voice in the culture of the class, it helps. #masterychat
A3 Its personalized, it depends on the needs... what medicine do you use when you have 2 kids, one with the flu and one with strept throat to help them recover? It starts with mindset, then acknowledgement, application, reflection, redo until ALL SHINE
#masterychat
A3: In small groups I feel it is easier. When in the classroom I really work to give think time, look to evereyone to share, expand upon thoughts, various styles. I don't have a particular program to ensure euqitalbe learning. #masterychat
Technology, some blended learning, extra videos, games, resources, and formative assessments to keep you on the pulse of learning... jump in when needed #masterychat
A3: knowing and having relationships with scholars and asking them what they need or how can you support them during the day to learn and function. #masterychat
A3 My biggest resource is my PLN. Tools can be found by students, techniques are varied with everyone. But both often become richer when we share, collaborate and reflect together. The only way to offer equity is to build with collective voices. #MasteryChat
A3: PLC's led well.
When a school/district is set up to use teams focused on learning, the very best teams/schools/districts focus on the learning needs of each student, and less on the learning needs of āthe studentsā. The plural often becomes the enemy of equity. #masterychat
A3: The key: Investing the time and space to build a strong relationship with each student and then tailoring my resources, etc. to meet them where they are so that they can work on things they care about (not the other way around). #MasteryChat
People who look like me + sound like me need to have hard conversations with others who look + sound like me to tackle inequitable systems. Silence means being complicit, so we can't hope things change or leave it to teachers in marginalized groups to ensure they do. #MasteryChat
A3: Use tech as a lever (collaboration, communication) and tool (speach to text for example). Plan together with other teachers. Have admin or other teachers observe in your classroom and offer feedback. Use student voice: ask Ss how best they would learn. #masterychat
A3 I am grateful for my coworkers in other grade levels. They are invaluable resources for developing tasks that are appropriate for the varying levels of my Ss. When I ask them for resources I always walk away with more than that: new knowledge & a clearer mindset. #MasteryChat
A3 Constantly reading a wide variety of material to grow my knowledge. Ask your students about everything! You're there for them. Get to know them and value their input. They're the resources you need most! #equityineducation#masterychat
A3-2: PLCs are a great place to kick around ideas and strategies. Love listening to teachers talk passionately about finding new ways to engage Ss and get them excited about learning. #masterychat
A3 Keep iPad chargers handy and accessible, ignore pencils leaving the classroom, be flexible about Ss not having earbuds, explain to Ss why judging their peers for not understanding X,Y, or Z isn't great. #masterychat
The only way we can have true equity is if we truly know our students. The only ātechniqueā for that is relationship-building. #RelationshipsAreEverything#MasteryChat
A3 parents! Educate them on the importance of education... include them, donāt keep them out. Teach them about the possibilities that exist for their student. #masteryChat#equityInEducation
A3 - allowing students to work at their own pace and have ownership of their learning. I use and help teachers implement #thegridmethod in order to do this. #masterychat
A3 I tutor after school 4 days a week to ensure all of my Ss ade@getting what they need (extra small group attention). I also scaffold lessons, use different manipulatives, and make accommodations when necessary. #masterychat#dowhatisbestforkids
A3 Picture books are magnificent tools for learners to talk about ALL aspects of equity/inequity. I love voice-to-text tools. Additionally, discussing the ways we support one another by accepting differences & modifying expectations/strategies/tools goes a long way. #MasteryChat
A3: i have always been an advocate for inquiry-based learning that embraces student voice and choice as a vegicle for equitable learning. Now I am in a position where it my my responsibility to push this district-wide! #masterychat
I teach 4 diff courses, two without curriculum. Eight sections, 220 total Ss. While Iād love for every lesson I teach in every class to be equitable, I truly do not have time to do it every day in every class. In a perfect world? Yes! But education is far from that. #masterychat
A3: Positive video emails to the students and their parents to share what the students are doing in class. I love using @Screencastify to send positive videos to the parents. #masterychat
A3~
~strong foundation of ongoing, authentic, trusting relationships
~continuous learning/PD in how to best meet needs of our complex array of fabulous Ss
~advocate for fair equitable education for all ~ at town, state, fed lvl
#MasteryChat
I'm also a firm believe that every student deserves timely, meaningful feedback that they can use to grow across disciplines. This can't just be for the privileged few; it has to be for everyone to close achievement + opportunity gaps. #MasteryChat
These questions are difficult to answer! Inequities are a constant in education! Ss on free & reduced lunch. SPED Ss, Gen. Ed Ss, Gifted Ss, Ss with physical disabilities, etc All in one classroom with 35 Ss, 3 associates, a Co-teacher, Nurse, & a Parent volunteer #masterychat
SOOOO true! This batched ed model has never been relevant but is extraordinarily irrelevant in today's rapidly changing world. One-size-fits-all methods have simply got to go! #MasteryChat
But you control your classroom and can squelch those outside forces. Tell your students to ignore the critics and tell ths@ #youCanDoIt#masteryChat#equityInEducation
A3: Positive video emails to the students and their parents to share what the students are doing in class. I love using @Screencastify to send positive videos to the parents. #masterychat
Sara here from Texas! I'm joining a bit late b/c my son's basketball game went into OT! I witnessed inequity when my girl students had to stay home to care for their younger siblings when their parents had to work. The boys never did the same. It was "just that way." #masterychat
The greatest tool at my disposal is myself as an instructor who makes just decisions a priority of my classroom culture. Accountability systems (teacher buddies, goal sheets, etc.) help me and Ss steer the course toward a common vision for all #MasteryChat
However, we must stop teaching technology and start teaching the processes that develop that technology, if all we do is teach current tech our teaching will be irrelevant in 2 years. #masteryChat#equityInEducation
A3: Establish class safety & social/emotional security first, pretesting so Ss are met w/ content at their ability level w/ proper instructional planning & differentiation, flexible mindset using universal design methods to avoid cookie cutter content & expectations.#MasteryChat
Leslie Hopp, first year special education T from Illinois, jumping into #masterychat a little late tonight! I think one of the most prominent inequities in education is college education. Those who can actually afford it, end up broke after. Those who are broke can't go at all!
Yes! New technologies have a tremendous potential to improve student learning, guiding the many pieces in a complex system need to work seamlessly to make this happen. #masteryChat
A3: The greatest tool for equity is our relationships. Building trust, understanding student need, bridging gaps between school and home so disenfranchised populations know how to help. Once that has been established, we can build systems where Ss get what they need.#masterychat
A3. View Ss as individuals & not as a % of a certain demo group designated by the state. Meet the individual needs of each S. If 90% of Ss pass a state test, thatās great but what happens to the 10% who failed? #MasteryChat
However, we must stop teaching technology and start teaching the processes that develop that technology, if all we do is teach current tech our teaching will be irrelevant in 2 years. #masteryChat#equityInEducation
Excellent!!! Adaptability is the best thing we can teach our students... the best way to teach this is through real life modeling... donāt teach them content, teach them to learn! #equityInEducation#masteryChat
A1: Equity in the classroom is inclusive and equally accessible to all! That's the baseline. From there, we must branch off to consider individual student's needs, abilities, culture, language, and voice. #masterychat
A3. FAMILY culture where each child is valued & challenged 2 their abilities. Teaching each child where they are & celebrating successes! Having asses/activ., geared 2 each childās level & knowing that EVERY child is in your family no matter behavior or acad. level! #masterychat
I 100% agree - somehow, we need to shift from massive amounts of number graded assignments to a model that allows for continuous meaningful feedback for ALL Ss. Coaching has allowed me to do this. #masterychat
A3: Positive video emails to the students and their parents to share what the students are doing in class. I love using @Screencastify to send positive videos to the parents. #masterychat
Leslie Hopp, first year special education T from Illinois, jumping into #masterychat a little late tonight! I think one of the most prominent inequities in education is college education. Those who can actually afford it, end up broke after. Those who are broke can't go at all!
Indeed! Technology is simply a tool, like any other. The culture has to be in place first to ensure every child is developing a strong love of learning in your class/school...then find the right tech to support that environment. #MasteryChat
A4 Keep talking about it- shine a big bright light on it- model it with staff ( Equity issues are not just with Ss) And provide PD, not just PD GREAT PD- and keep working towards being better tomorrow than today! :)
#masteryChat
Great point! I think it's also important to note that manipulating data to show equitable outcomes is not the same as changing systems to be more equitable, yet a whole lot of folks get caught up in the former rather than the latter. #MasteryChat
This is #studentCentered teaching at its best. Want to close the equity gap, get to know your students on a deeper level and then youāll know the lack of equity you need to address. Sometimes we assume we know the equity gap. #masteryChat#equityInEducation
A4. Having worked toward this for 26 years there are MANY things admin can do and it does become extremely complicated! Near the end of my career I became better at it because marvelous teachers and I worked as a team to ensure classrooms were equitable. #masterychat
A3
Class does not end at the bell
Open door policy, welcome students in to ask questions, to clarify, to gain more insight
Connect with students on a personal level
Offer choices that meet the learning needs of all students
Listen when they talk
Care
#masterychat
A4: Model by ensuring equity between teachers! Provide as much support through time and funding as possible for Ts to make professional decisions in their own classrooms. Speak up when you see inequity. Silence is compliance. #MasteryChat
A4 We need to shake up the structure of current schools/system. We need building leaders present around school, not office. We need timetables that favor collaboration. We need to focus on the students, not the numbers. We need to listen to the voices in our schools. #MasteryChat
A4 be sure to review data for inequities and be diligent in addressing them. Be open to the very real possibility that thier school is inequitable #masterychat
Q4: be present, work alongside us, guide us, seek out the best practices that a evidence based and allow us to use them. I have amazing admin, and having a leader that helps you meet, understand and set the expectations is a huge advantage to the whole school! #masterychat
A4. It takes time and teamwork to work toward equitable classrooms and then fifteen or thirty students arrive on day two of the school year and throw a monkey wrench into what were so well thought out plans! #masterychat
A4: Keeping the conversation present and keeping everyone aware that the students we have all have different backgrounds. Some have backgrounds that support education and some who don't. #masterychat
A4: provide Ts with time to collaborate, share, and discuss ideas and strategies. Create an environment that makes them feel safe to share, explore, and possibly fail. Be the support they need to succeed. #masterychat
A4: It seems like such a simple thing, but start with listening to the professionals in the building and act on what they need to support their students. If they don't know what they need, help them figure it out. #masterychat
Q4- we need to change the narrative that parents who don't physically show up don't value school. We need to figure out ways to meet families where they are, not where we are. Not everyone has skills, $$, support, time, schedule, language to volunteer, etc. #masterychat
Q4: We have to be bold in our quest for equity. We canāt shy away from conversations about our failures that create opportunity gaps. We have to reflect. We have to talk about it. We have to see kids as stories, not data, and establish the hell out of relationships. #masterychat
A4 Patience! And realistic expectations. Student growth doesnāt show up in neatly arranged quarterly reports. And understanding that SEL is just as, if not more important, than immediate academic achievement #MasteryChat
A1: I go back to universal design- the environment should be accessible to all from curriculum to space to equipment and materials. Everyone gets what they need to be successful. #masterychat
A4: It all starts with culture! As Peter Drucker said, "Culture eats strategy for breakfast." If you don't have the school culture in place that values and drives equity, no strategy, program, etc. will last. #MasteryChat
A4: Joining late as usual. Admins need to ensure the expectations are consistent across the building. No one is treated differently ā make this the culture! #masterychat
This is a small classroom, add 20 more Ss that cover the whole spectrum of difficulties? How do we engage all Ss & keep it equitable for all? #masterychat
Being open to the possibility is a marvelous way of putting it.
It takes SO much time to work together and try to get it right that many act naive when they actually know better. #masterychat
A4 be sure to review data for inequities and be diligent in addressing them. Be open to the very real possibility that thier school is inequitable #masterychat
A4 This reads like a dollars & cents question, but I think it should be taken as a value question. Provide equitable funding and resources, not equality funding and resources. ALL populations DO NOT have equal opportunities, funding & resources should reflect this. #MasteryChat
A4 highQuality feedback for ALL teachers, high standards for all teachers, High quality PD that meets the needs of ALL teachers... focused and specific. Believe in your teachers and model how you want them to believe in their students #equityInEducation#masteryChat
A4: I believe administration plays a huge role in the tone & culture of a school but if the teachers have not been part of the process is the culture really impacted? It all boils down to creating opportunity for students, which anyone can do.
#MasteryChat
#MasteryChat - A4 - Building and district admin can ensure that programs and funds are in place for special education as well as MTSS/RTI so that we can identify and intervene when students are struggling. They can also provide equity training to staff.
A4. Work deliberate strategies in addressing equity as early as possible to help lower the barriers students are facing. Equip students & teachers with the right technology, data, and skills. Promote ongoing PD around equity, knowledge building... #masterychat
#MasteryChat Q2 pulling students out of the classroom for testing accommodations, while necessary, takes them away from their comfortable classroom routine & teacher made anchor charts with valuable information.
A2: Everyone is sharing such amazing answers! I'd like to throw another factor into the mix: time. I'm still learning about equity in education, but time to make necessary changes, plans & shifts in mindset is an primary ingredient. How are teachers given that time? #masterychat
A2
Obstacles can be removed or lessened if we are committed to doing so
Not enough tech devices? Share, do group work, try stations
Not enough resources? Share, make your own, borrow
Not enough time in class? Post flexible assignments on line
Make it work
#masterychat
A4: Keep it at the forefront at all times with the staff. Engage everyone in genuine collaboration and problem solving during PD and meetings rather than having everyone walk through the motions. #osussmce#masterychat
Just need the collective will of teachers to move away from the numbers based model of assessment. If I had my way, I would never give a grade. I am begrudgingly doing reports right now. #masterychat

@Jennifer_Manly, @MrAustinA2, @Blended_Math
A4: Clarifying equity/equality can help a little. Those wanting equality for all certainly believe in fairness and have their hearts in a good place, but don't realize their efforts may only work if all are starting from the same place and needing the same supports. #masterychat
A4. ... and importantly, keep the conversation around equity going. Equity work requires buy-in from all angles and resources to support it. Keeping those lines of communication open is crucial. #masterychat
A4~
~ongoing funding for allocating monies for staffing & supports ~ no one and done line items
~offer relevant ongoing PD opportunities ~ online, in/out District to keep current to best practices/strategies/initiatives to meet our Ss needs
#MasteryChat
A4. Admin can educate Ts on how 2 accommodate & make inclusion necess. 4 ALL KIDSā¤ļø Iām speaking of kids in spec ed unit/behavior/so on-some teachers have mentality that kids in units donāt need taught because spec ed teaches them & I want to change that mindset! #masterychat
#masterychat - This is great. Education is just a reflection of a greater inequity in society, and data is just going to continue to reflect that - unless you want to change education to fight inequity instead of continue it.
Great point! I think it's also important to note that manipulating data to show equitable outcomes is not the same as changing systems to be more equitable, yet a whole lot of folks get caught up in the former rather than the latter. #MasteryChat
A4: Fight for RESOURCES for their team & Ss! SUPPORT their Ts to the best of their abilities. Be PRESENT, AVAILABLE, & SEEN. Prioritize the physical & mental health of their team w/ UNDERSTANDING. Be FLEXIBLE yet FIRM when needed! Be a FRIEND! #MasteryChat
While content must be taught, the process is much more important than the content we teach. We are preparing students today for jobs that havenāt even been invented. They have to learn to learn and adapt to change. #masteryChat#equityInEducation

A4: We have to have courageous conversations. We canāt be afraid to put all the cards on the table, then commit to specific actions & be accountable for them. #masterychat
And with honest conversation, be honest about your academic and behavior processes and data. Don't do things to skew those numbers #equityineducation#masterychat
This is an incredible conversation #MasteryChat & I'm super sad I've got to head out, but it's bedtime for my littles and I need to spend some time writing after I get them in bed - my wheels are turning. Remember to follow one another - this is an incredible group!
š Build equitable grading, assessment + feedback practices schoolwide.
š Help teachers with responsive pedagogies that use an asset-based approach.
š Institute disciplinary literacy programs that are differentiated + inclusive.
š Consistent equity training.
#MasteryChat
A4: model it in everything you do, is there equity in opportunities for all fac&staff& Ss? Incorporating it into PD -it needs to become part of every initiative. Equity should be the centerpiece of the implementation of any program, policy, structure #MasteryChat
I would disagree with you. I donāt want to be treated the same as everyone else, nor do I think that is fair. I agree in having standards and protocol, but I also think our (Ss/Staff/Commuity) differences need to be address/accommodated/Celebrated. #MasteryChat
A4: go to on going training to see inequity within our own lives and how its impacted us. Being able to come to self realization is quiet powerful, humbling, and enlightening.
#MasteryChat
A4 Allow Ts the freedom and the environment/culture to engage in open discussions, try new things, and work together to get there inch by inch. #MasteryChat
A3: I've started simple. Right not I'm ensuring my students have equitable access to learning resources & the classroom language is inclusive. I teach GT students, & a myth seems to exist: GT teachers don't need to worry about equity. The kids will succeed anyway. #masterychat
Many achievement gaps are created by the inequitable structures of school, as many students have funds of knowledge that aren't ever utilized or valued. This is why student choice with multiple pathways to mastery matters, as relevance can create opportunity. #MasteryChat
A1: Equity in the classroom looks like many opportunities for all students. The opportunities just look different, but the destination is all the same. #masterychat#osussmce
Absolutely! When it might seem like you've run up against that brick wall for the 15th time - keep placing ALL students first, just as you said. Wonderful to read your positive perception of this ongoing challenging problem. #masterychat
I don't see a dichotomy between the two. Content helps the brain develop both plasticity and automaticity. I shudder when I hear folks say that there's no need for knowledge because kids can simply Google it. Nothing could be further from the truth. #MasteryChat

A5 We need to change the way that we view education. It can't be seen as work in silos, it can't be a delivery of content. We need to make learning about curiosity, passion, fun, energy, excitement. We need to breathe life back into learning. It is up to us to do it. #MasteryChat
A5: Remember what it is like to be a learner. Sometimes, I get frustrated. But then I try to learn something new and I remember just how challenging it is to learn new concepts. #masterychat
A4 As building leaders we must start by having the conversations! Making sure We are all educated in equity vs equality and then keep the conversation and professional development ongoing. #MasteryChat
A4. This may sound contrary to what I stated previously but monitor/ensure that results from each demo group in class meet or exceed the learning objectives. It is the best way to ensure equity....by results! #MasteryChat
A5 - great question! By providing support and opportunities for younger students and explore teaching as well as restoring RESPECT and access to the profession. #masterychat
A1: The biggest obstacle is the lack of resources. Also, I always feel as though more could be done. I never feel as though Iām teaching the goal. #osussmce#masterychat
A5. To create equity amongst staff, we must expect the same things from our staff as we do from our studentsā¦ this creates an equitable learning community #masterychat
A5 Stop talking about each other. Support and accept one another and stop being competitive. The more collegiality we build. The more honesty and openness we conduct ourselves with, the more accepting of ourselves and each other we are, the better it will become. #MasteryChat
A5: Reflect constantly. We can't ever assume that we are good enough or settle. We must always move forward and get better as a profession. #osussmce#masterychat
Many achievement gaps are created by the inequitable structures of school, as many students have funds of knowledge that aren't ever utilized or valued. This is why student choice with multiple pathways to mastery matters, as relevance can create opportunity. #MasteryChat
A5 support teachers and the unions that support them so that theres equitable pay and opportunities for all educators. Lots of protests and unhappiness. What about supporting educators that LOOK like our students!! #masterychat
A5b - be respectful of all. Every certified and classified person in a building has an impportant role to play in helping to care for, support, and educate our littles. No one positions is more important than another. #masterychat
A5 1.reflect on who we are & our experiences & how they shaped our views. 2.make our unconscious bias conscious so we can continually work on them. And, as always, build real relationships with ppl, including ppl who will check us when we mess up or don't know yet #masterychat
A5. Educators can engage deeply in equity work ā explore their experiences, see what it means to them, evaluate their perspectives and how they're viewing their work with students. It's not something to just carry out, but something to participate in. #masterychat
A4
Open communication with Admin and discussions to come up with solutions
Apply for grants
Don't be afraid to ask the community for help
@DonorsChoose is a great option for resources
Never stop trying to come up with ways to find resources or to seek funding
#masterychat
A5: Break out if the old ways and view education as the world changing profession that it is. Celebrating that there are many ways to be an outstanding educator. Not outside the box ā get rid of the box. #masterychat
A5: Knowing itās not is a good start. Weāre largely white and female, stemming from a massive release of black Ts following desegregation. Admin is equally white. We must be aware of what that means for our Ss academically and socioemotionally. #equityineducation#masteryChat
A3: Differentiation is key in this aspect. Many resources come from myself or those around me. I know there ate an adundance of resources out there. Itās just about getting them in our hands. #osussmce#masterychat
@Blended_Math Hi #MasteryChat! Elementary principal from CA here. I see that some ELLs can have trouble accessing the material because of lack of vocabulary or cultural experiences. We must meet each student where they are so we can help them reach mastery.
A5: Recognize and acknowledge any privilege we have as educators. Utilize said privilege and/or position to allow for a wide array of voices to be heard in our spheres of influence. Model being just and empathetic humans in day-to-day life. #MasteryChat
Perhaps we view this differently, as I am struggling to reconcile your POV, but respect that I donāt always see and understand written communication in the way it is intended! Thanks for taking time to revisit your initial point and my challenge. #MasteryChat
#MasteryChat - A5 - We can be more inclusive in our school communities. We need to reach outside of our comfort zone to make ALL educators fell welcome and valued. Our differences can be our strength when it comes to reaching all students.
I let students self-assess + self-report their grades either in writing or face-to-face conferences, which, if you want or have to grade, puts the trust + agency with students + demystifies the process for them. #MasteryChat

A4: Vision for school/district should include language directed at equity & justice for all. Admin should offer time for professional learning & SEL time in building around these concepts with Ts & Ss together. #MasteryChat
A4: It starts with looking up from data sheets & getting into the classroom. Need for this kind of change can't be found in test results. (Granted, the results might be a symptom.) The kids will show you their stories. Ts need to know admin knows their students. #masterychat
In a perfect world, we might grade, but only as much as we can while also giving high quality, meaningful feedback. Without it, the number is arbitrary. #masterychat

A5 Provide collaboration, PD, and supports for teachers. Ensure we are listening to those in the trenches and stop acting as if we are working against one another. #MasteryChat
A5:Just as we use assessment for learning with kiddos, if we want equity for staff, then we should ditch/revise the equality-designed job descriptions and teacher supports to be almost always formative too. Formative work is by its nature designed for equity. #MasteryChat
A5: I don't know whether we can even "ensure" equity - but getting diverse perspectives, checking assumptions at the door, and examining issues through different lenses helps us to get closer to equity. #masterychat
A5: Blur the lines between the artificial construct we have created called school (bells, siloed classes, advancing in batches, scores=success, etc.) and the real world that we are preparing our students for. Positive disruption of the status quo #PBL, #competencyed, #masterychat
A6: I can model with Ss and Ts how to work within the classroom to take the overall lesson and make adjustments so that it is equitable for all and we all #teachbetter and learn better. #masterychat
A5
Keep seeking information on equity in the classroom
Continue to learn, take classes, read published research
Participate in PD, in person or online
Build a strong PLN to share ideas
#masterychat
A5. By having a personal goal each yr of promoting & achieving equity in our classes. Also by encouraging & then supporting diverse teachers in our schools & in our profession. #MasteryChat
A5: have more diversity in r teaching ranks it's not easy to go into a profession when u cant relate. Better supports for new teachers. College of education need to seek out diversity. Black & Hispanic males are some of the highest underrepresented popul in schools
#MasteryChat
A6 One specific thing I plan to do in my prep time tomorrow is to create more levels of differentiation in the fluency passages offered to my students. I spent this week visiting teachers in other grade levels asking for fluency passages I could use. #masterychat
A5 Ts need to advocate for each other. Less competition and more collaboration. We accomplish so much more when we work together. It is also a great model for students #masterychat
A6 I always strive to start fresh with students daily. We have challenging days, we sometimes need to restructure our classroom system, but I want to have fun. A long history of distractions, tech & disengagement presents many obstacles, but I trust we can start over #MasteryChat
#masterychat Q5: welcome observations from peers and then carefully listen when they provide feedback and share their own instructional practices. Choose one area of growth biweekly or monthly to work on as a team or with the peers who observed you.
I'm not sure why rote learning has gotten such a bad rap. It's certainly not the case in music or sports. And what's been found is that not paying sufficient attention to knowledge actually hurts girls, especially in STEM https://t.co/GYTRxw8tHL#MasteryChat

A5) We can change the paradigm of the culture of education. " It takes a village to raise a child." We are all in this together! Inequities exist but we can change them one at a time! #masterychat#StarfishClub
A4: I think building principals can make equity a priority. Just as reading, writing, math, etc are top priorities - we have to make teaching it in an equitable way a priority. Each child has their own road and we have to follow it to help them best. #masterychat#osussmce
A6. Bring your authentic self into your work. Approach your colleagues and your students with openness and understanding. Equity work can have its ups and downs, but it's a journey worth making as long as you're willing to grow and engage in it with respect. #masterychat
Celebrate the underdog. Create a safe place to work & play for those that often sit on the outside. We all need a champion @ times. Showing a little love, a lot of respect and taking the time to meet Ss & staff where they are at... invaluable. #TeachBetter#MasteryChat#tomorrow
A5: personalize the supports as best as possible, get everyone to have growth mindset, give everyone opportunities to seek & find professional growth in their own way. #MasteryChat
A5 1.reflect on who we are & our experiences & how they shaped our views. 2.make our unconscious bias conscious so we can continually work on them. And, as always, build real relationships with ppl, including ppl who will check us when we mess up or don't know yet #masterychat

#MasteryChat - A6 - I am meeting with the interventionists in the district tomorrow, actually, so this is a great question. I need to make sure that we are providing the help and resources to those teachers who help the students who need it the most.
A1 ā¤ļøthis question! I firmly believe I need to meet with families more to support our Ss. We need to figure how to support our Ss not fix them especially when it comes to behavior and meeting all of our Ss needs. #masteryChat
A6: Be intentional about ensuring the classroom and the instruction represents different cultures, viewpoints, etc. What is taught must represent the world as a whole. #masterychat
A6
Be patient and kind
Meet ss where they are
Don't try to change them, try to help them be who they are while enhancing their qualities to be the best they can be
Give them an opportunity to try
We talk about giving them a voice...make sure you listen
#masterychat
#masterychat- Nothing wrong with some union love. Nothing wrong with ensuring that teachers are treated like professionals and that they are compensated and have the opportunities that other professionals have as well.
Sure! Different folks are in different political realities here though + I respect that. I'm working with folks to grade less + assess more + provide more feedback. When we do have to grade, we need to ensure we're doing it equitably + meaningfully. #MasteryChat

A6 tomorrow I'm actually taking a TDE to visit the Black Educators Exhibit at UF. Educational experience for me on this history that I will take back to Ts. While away, I will send Ts sweet messages how much I value them #masterychat
A6. Increase your knowledge about situations that place a monkey wrench into classrooms that are equitable. Ask to discuss this topic at a staff meeting and begin the conversations to help improve this for everyone! #masterychat
A6: Tomorrow I can #Teachbetter by keeping high expectations for all Ss & helping them self-evaluate prior to peer evaluations/reflections of Book Trailer projects. I can maintain the conditions for Ss to be the best versions of themselves. #MasteryChat
A6: Take time to reflect on your day. Celebratethe good things, examine the not so good, learn from it, and let it go! Tomorrow is a new day and a new opportunity to do great things for kids! #masterychat
A6: continue educating myself on mental health, anxiety, autism, DS, etc..continue to learn from all of you amazing educators thru chats, continue to put my kids first/empowering each with voice/choice while hooking my kids to always want moreš#masterychat
A6 Care. Stop assuming that the issues Ss bring into our rooms are their attempts to derail things and question whether or not they actually know that what they're doing is disruptive, concerning, and incorrect. #masterychat
Many achievement gaps are created by the inequitable structures of school, as many students have funds of knowledge that aren't ever utilized or valued. This is why student choice with multiple pathways to mastery matters, as relevance can create opportunity. #MasteryChat
Q6. Know, care about, & understand your Ss. This info will help you understand the baggage some of our Ss bring to school. This will allow you to better meet their needs & form positive relationships. #MasteryChat
A6: I can ask questions. I may be the teacher, but there are many times when my students hold the answers. I can't reach my students if I have no idea how individuals are feeling about their academic and personal lives. #osussmce#masterychat
A5: We canāt seek diverse candidates and try to turn them into middle-aged white women. Thereās a reason we seek diversity in teaching, and we need to cultivate that by taking the expertise of these teachers and making that expertise part of our existing culture. #masterychat
A6: listen because everyone has a story to share but sometimes we fail to engage and lose a chance to build a much needed support into that person's life.
#masterychat
#MasteryChat Q6: I plan to create digital and print anchor charts for students that receive testing accommodations to take with them during testing. Also, by wrapping up a math unit using a PBL to reinforce real life application, rather than reviewing the strategy the same way.
I feel for it to be meaningful, we must include feedback. An number or letter only on top of an assignment tells the S nothing about their progress towards meeting the standard #masterychat

Our Ss don't need "fixing" They need Ts who understand their world and value them. Building relationships with families can help with this š #masterychat
#masterychat flies by in what seems like a few minutes and before you know it ::poof:: it is over with and you forgot to "follow" the passionate educators who shared their wisdom. Here is a graphic that easily explains how you can "follow" others once a chat is finished.
A6. Be intentional, be kind, caring, Build relationships and get to know you Ss. Welcome family members, and community members into school as well. #masterychat
A6: I think the best thing I can do is think about the needs of my students and all the things I will do to make sure I hit as many of them as I can in the time I have. If Iām actively thinking about how to do better, I will do better. #masterychat#osussmce
Exactly! I read The Explosive Child that explains how many of our Ss are lacking behavioral strategies that many people assume they should have. #MasteryChat
A3) Building relationships where you know your students really helps. It helps them feel comfortable letting you know when they need help. It allows for a positive feedback loop where you can adjust and meet them where they are. @Blended_Math#MasteryChat
So I think something we really havenāt touched on tonight is that a cornerstone of equity is ensuring rigor for every S - recognizing that on the whole, minority Ss make up more of our SPED classes and less of our advanced classes. Ideas for ensuring rigor for all? #MasteryChat
Yes! Don't assume your parents are disengage either. There's so many variables at play. Go to your parents (don't require them to come to you always) and learn from them! #masterychat
Yep! How do we invite those who have been harmed by or excluded from our schools + districts back into the process? And if folks can't engage for whatever reason, we need to understand that doesn't represent a personal failing or disregard for their kid's education. #MasteryChat
No disagreement at all on pendulum swings. Recently, it feels to me that things have swung away from knowledge. We'd make a lot more progress here if we saw things as a yes/and rather than an either/or. #MasteryChat
A child who continuously is ārankedā in the bottom part of the class is generally not compelled to learn. He/She can come to believe that they canāt learn, or that they āare not that smartā. This is not what we desire for our students, especially those who struggle. #masterychat

Thank you #MasteryChat !!! Wow, what a breadth of knowledge and positive atmosphere in this PLN. The depth of sharing is just so invigorating. Feels like a #kindness chat too! In awe and so grateful!
@Blended_Math A4) I think this needs to be handled in a similar fashion as we work with students. Build relationships, positive feedback loop, meet them where they are. Our teachers are as different as our students are. #MasteryChat
