Tiffany Copple here from Scottsburg! My day job is teaching 6th science, but I'm also an Innovation Specialist for @inelearn. I'll be popping in and out. #INeLearn
R1: Personally, I think one thing we forget to ask ourselves is: "How did the last lesson go?" So many times we just keep pushing forward without looking back or bridging the gap between lessons or days. #INeLearn
A1: Always begin with the end in mind. What take-aways do you want your students to have at the end of the lesson? What are the tiny steps in getting them there? Why are you choosing a particular approach? #INeLearn
R1: if you are looking at backwards design, the end goal should be looking at your assessment or your big ideas. What do you expect your Ss to learn and what is essential to know? #INeLearn
Good questions, @MrsBWallick I especially like the idea of reflecting on the "tiny steps" so that we are setting our students up for their best success. #IneLearn
R1 What are my kids interested in? What do they know already? What stumbling blocks might they face?
Also, how can they make this lesson memorable? How can I make my content relevant to my specific learners?
#inelearn
R1 Creatively, I also ask questions like, "How can we accomplish this, but...get mobile...use artistic abilities...go outside...etc.?" These help push me to do things differently and reach different learning styles. #IneLearn

#inelearn
A1 length of activities and background knowledge of students...Making real world connections gives instant credibility to a lesson...Easier said then done with some content #INeLearn
R2 Think about the type of assessment you plan to give. What will it cover? How will Ss demonstrate their learning? What skills do I need to teach to help them succeed (ie. info text reading, diagram analyzation, etc.) #INeLearn
R2: I look at the standards/indicators. I “unwrap” them so they make sense. Then I look at the actions and identify the big ideas. Once those big ideas are identified, that is when I start looking at the assessments. Then how do I need to engage the Ss in learning #INeLearn
R2 We need to first identify the skills we want students to leave our classrooms with. Then, we can move backwards from there. Plan unit goals, then lesson goals, then formative goals.
#INeLearn
R2: Build in opportunities to embed practice with the skills that your students will need in the final demonstration of mastery/learning. Also, having an open mind about what that final "product" even looks like. #INeLearn
Good points. So many Ts think of the end product (exam, project, etc.) that they forget the smaller steps along the way that help that end product become successful. #IneLearn
A little late to the party but ready to go now! A1: Ts should consider-what is my end goal here? What means can students use to get to this goal, both tech adn non-tech? What barriers are there for my students and how can I break down these barriers to meet their needs? #inelearn
R3 Where's the caffeine? Teasing..kind of. I lay it all out from critical questions to objectives to bell ringer to meat of the lesson to activity to assessment to exit. #INeLearn
A2: Making sure the tasks/activties/tech tools align with the goal of the lesson/task at hand. Reflecting on this will help make sure that you are thinking of the end task-if a student uses a different route to get to the end goal, it doesn't have to be a bad thing! #inelearn
R2: I like to keep in mind various activities (convos, holidays, fire drills, etc.) that creep in and become a part of the school day - sometimes more so than we'd like. I like to reflect on whether my expectations are actually achievable and possible for students too. #IneLearn
If we can't explain why it is important, WHY in the world are we teaching it? I feel like sometimes we "cover" stuff to get it over with more than "teach" it because we value it. How can we expect Ss to value it if we don't? #INeLearn
A2: Look both long-term & short term. Thinking of tech integration...if there's a particular project I want them to be successful with using tech in the future, I need to intro it in bite-sized ways now because most likely they have not been exposed yet as Kinders. #INeLearn
R3 We have to be reflective at all times. We have to question whether our Sss are ready to move on or need more time, as well as questioning how to accommodate learners who work faster or slower. And we have to ask ourselves "would I want to be a student in my class?" #INeLearn
A3: While lesson planning-again, the goal in mind! Even if there's a really awesome wonderful tool I want to use, does it align with the goal and help my students? And also, how would my students like to learn? Important to include their voice in the planning process #inelearn
A3: Differentiation, Students with special needs..what modifications need to be made for them? Is it engaging for students? Does it to connect to real world applications? #INeLearn
I like your desire to break down the barriers! Way to work through things and not just attempt something because there might be a barrier! #INeLearn#shiftthesystem
Ss can totally see through those activities and lessons that are “why do I have to teach this?” activities. When we can’t buy in, the Ss definitely WONT buy in! #INeLearn
R4: Include students in the process of designing the rubric/feedback process. Lay out your expectations, but also ask them what they would expect to be part of a successful attainment of a lesson's goal. Let them take ownership-increases accountability and pride! #inelearn
R4: From my experience, it is ALL about expectations. Set the bar and they wlll meet (and even exceed) it. Where to set the bar is key... too low and they take the easy way out. Too high and they give up. #INeLearn
R4: I post my agenda and big ideas for the week. I send it in an email to Ps and Ss. Then it is part of my content and literacy expectations. Oh, it’s posted in @CanvasLMS also. Everyone knows what to expect. #INeLearn
R3: How will all students be successful with this lesson? What strategies & supports are necessary? Predict student response to instruction and be reflective during the lesson. Some of the best lessons happen in response to curve balls during instruction. #INeLearn
R4: When doing projects, I also liked to give my students the rubric we created and had them answer questions over it as part of an assignment. I also would make a "sample" project and they would grade ME! I intentionally made it imperfect so they would think critically #inelearn
R4 We have to be consistent and set clear expectations. We must also reinforce those expectations frequently. And daily reminders of short term goals are helpful too. Writing objectives on the board is great, but some kids do better with verbal reminders. #INeLearn
Oh.... I LOVE the idea of feedback. Too many times the project they turn in is considered final...not an opportunity to learn and do better/improve. Think about engineers - they make prototypes and spend hours debugging and improving their designs. Why don't we? #INeLearn
I always write mine on the board, but I feel like the majority don't use it as a reference. Sometimes I wonder why, except that it is part of our evaluation. #INeLearn
R4: The roadmap of where we are going and periodic formatives along the way can help. Keep it simple, refresh often, and keep it in front of them #INeLearn
I love the written objectives as much as the next person, but nothing frustrates me more than walking into a classroom and seeing the objectives in T language - those kids don't understand that! #INeLearn
R5: I frequently hear Ts frustrated when Plan A failed and they have to think on the fly. Yes, that is an important skill to model for Ss, but I think an even more important skill to model is having a backup plan and being able to accomplish the lesson in multiple ways #INeLearn
When you make the rubrics with your kids do you give them categories or what needs to be there and then let them decide what the cutoffs for points are? Or how does that work? #INeLearn
R5 I really only do this for when I have a sub. When I'm teaching, I honestly enjoy the spontaneity of a Plan B or C. Sometimes I find they are my most creative moments... #INeLearn
R5: happened today to me. My Physics students were going to calculate force and other stuff with egg drop boxes OUTSIDE. It rained all day. So, we moved onto the lesson after and spent time reviewing other concepts from the past. Not a lost day of learning. #INeLearn
R5: What can I do differently? What other resources/strategies do I have available? Where is the stash of chocolate in my room? But in all honesty-nothing is perfect-it is okay, make notes and move forward, it'll be better next time! #inelearn
R5 As a former art teacher, I always had to ask myself, how can students hurt themselves with the equipment or sculpt something inappropriate out of clay 🤣
But I also ask myself, what's my backup plan for a crash and burn?
#INeLearn

R5 All lessons aren't going to work perfect...just be honest and drop back and punt with the Ss...Its worse pushing through a lesson that fell right on its face...Tt could always throw it back to Ss and ask what she/he liked or disliked...Feedback could help Ss buy-n #INeLearn
A6: For smooth transitions, I would have a lyric playlist of popular youtube songs. I would tell students by the end of the song they needed to be prepared for the next subject amd song along until the end. #INeLearn
R6: The "less is more" approach works best for setting clear expectations for our students. Post them in the classroom. And REPEAT over and over what you expect - no matter what the age. #INeLearn
R6 I have large class sizes this year. I'm constantly thinking about how to move large groups of Ss for materials, etc. I like chunking them and staggering activities for smoother transitions. #INeLearn
R6 I also clearly indicate what activity they should move to after accomplishing a task. I have them repeat back to me the steps. I post them in our LMS AND on the front board. It helps with being asked, "What am I supposed to do now?" #INeLearn
R6: Errors/issues/hurdles WILL happen! Be upfront with the students. They'll understand and appreciate honesty. If you remain calm, they will too. I liked to use stopwatch timers/youtube timers to help my students self-regulate while we did activities and transitions #INeLearn
R6: Don’t let issues shift the focus of the lesson - have responses to issues built into classroom management plan so Ss know how to react when issues arise. #INeLearn
R6 Technology issues can arise despite the best preparation, but testing tech and planning for a worst can make a big difference. And consistency/practice of routines makes such a difference in terms of transitions and classroom management.
#INeLearn
R6: Try out the technology 1st no matter how confident you are in using it. Have a routine for everything. We go to the carpet with "apples up" before we do a new lesson w/iPads. Continuously reflect and fine tune practices. #INeLearn
A7: What materials do I need to purchase or see if I already own? Any tech logins I need to setup prior to lesson? Have I tested tech sites and apps to ensure they work in my classroom? 👩🏻💻 #INeLearn
R7: am I creating a lesson that every Ss will be engaged in? Am I hitting opportunities for Ss to hit 4Cs. Am I teaching them skills they will be able to use well past my class. #INeLearn
Exactly! Has anyone ever tried a tool a month before and it worked great, but the day you use it in class, they have changed the tool or what it looks like? Gotta love updates! LOL #INeLearn
Q4 - setting guidelines, procedures, classroom management that is consistent throughout the day/year. If time is spent on this at the beginning of the year w/ review at certain pts , the payoff will be Learning thru collaboration the rest of the year #INeLearn
This has happened to me presenting before. Once I had an entire app retire from the app store between the time I used it with Ss and the presentation. Embarrassing! #IneLearn
A8: Analyze the data.. the good, the bad, the ugly.. and dont take it personal if your lesson bombed and your data proves it. Pick yourself up and reach out to others. Kids deserve it. #INeLearn 👏🏻❤️
R7 If a Ss is absent how will he/she learn this same content....Some lessons are difficult to carry over to an absent student...Could that Ss be exempt? #INeLearn
R8: have you ever wondered why some Ts will give an assessment and if the kids bomb it, they move forward and bury Ss even deeper in not knowing content? We should use results to help formulate our next steps. Those plans we created can be changed with no problems. #INeLearn
R6 - Be consistent, practice over and over procedures to become automatic, learn from mistakes together within the classroom- that way T can model for students and then students can practice and become masters 👍🏼#INeLearn
WU: Yes totally involve students in lesson planning! Ask them about current interests so you can incorporate them into your lessons.. Ask them what would be engaging for them? Never stop asking them. Don’t assume you know what they are thinking #INeLearn 🙌🏻❤️👩🏻💻
