A1: I often have used Think-Aloud with students to illustrate how I think about writing of how I monitor text that I'm reading. #educoach
  • KathyPerret - Moderator Feb 6 @ 9:12 PM EST
YEAH! So glad you could join us tonight, Leanna! #educoach

A1: I’ve used think aloud with colleagues when we have been co-teaching together and with students when demonstrating a strategy with mentor texts/pieces. #educoach
  • KathyPerret - Moderator Feb 6 @ 9:14 PM EST
A1 I have used Think Alouds for a long time in the classroom. The book Mosaic of Thought, mentioned in Student Center Coaching: The Moves changed the way I taught! Nice to have that connection with @SweeneyDiane & @leannaharris22 #educoach
  • ChristinaSwee23 Feb 6 @ 9:15 PM EST
A1 I have used Think Alouds in the classroom with students to demonstrate annotation and worked with teachers to do this. #educoach
  • kennycmckee - Moderator Feb 6 @ 9:15 PM EST
Q2 How can thinking aloud in co-teaching or co-planning benefit the coaching process? #educoach
  • leannaharris22 Feb 6 @ 9:15 PM EST
A1: Yes! The connection between the thinking aloud we do with Ss and how we can use it with Ts is so powerful. #educoach

Q1 I am currently working on my very first thinking aloud. It as been a bit difficult but now it’s the third week we’ve been working on them and it has gotten easier. #educoach #Sp19edfb4338
  • KathyPerret - Moderator Feb 6 @ 9:18 PM EST
A2 Just like with students, thinking aloud shares your own thought process with teachers. #educoach
  • ChristinaSwee23 Feb 6 @ 9:18 PM EST
Forgot to introduce - I'm Christina Sweeney a MS learning coach in NY. My coaching win of the week was a meeting we had today with coaches from a neighboring district - very enlightening! And great connections to make! #educoach

A2: It allows for those in the moment coaching conversations to take place. Both coach and teacher are able to make meaning together in real time vs after the fact. #educoach
  • ChristinaSwee23 Feb 6 @ 9:19 PM EST
A2 I'm also thinking how powerful it is to support teachers as they think aloud too. #educoach
  • KathyPerret - Moderator Feb 6 @ 9:19 PM EST
What areas have been difficult? You have a room for of coaches right now to help you think through something. #educoach

Q3 What tips do you have for fellow coaches to share their own thinking rather than giving advice? #educoach
  • abh199600 Feb 6 @ 9:23 PM EST
Were these confusing for you when you first started creating them? I am very new to this and just looking for some helpful tips. #educoach #Sp19EDFB4338
    In reply to @lsmith0917
  • KathyPerret - Moderator Feb 6 @ 9:23 PM EST
A3 The avoiding advice with think alouds reminds me of taming the Advice Monster from @boxofcrayons. #educoach
  • KathyPerret - Moderator Feb 6 @ 9:24 PM EST
What is the topic or goal in the lesson you are creating? That may help us provide some tips. Tell us a little more. #educoach
    In reply to @abh199600, @lsmith0917
  • kennycmckee - Moderator Feb 6 @ 9:24 PM EST
A3: I think it comes down to co-planning to co-teach. In that process, everyone has to share their thinking. A coach could also reflect on this experience with the teacher afterward. #educoach
  • leannaharris22 Feb 6 @ 9:25 PM EST
A3: I think that when we take it out of teaching it can be helpful: Think of something you're really comfortable doing. Now, don't tell someone how to do it, but tell them how YOU are doing it #educoach
  • lsmith0917 - Moderator Feb 6 @ 9:27 PM EST
I like how the reflection piece is embedded within this process. Such an important aspect in teaching/coaching that often is overlooked. #educoach
    In reply to @kennycmckee
  • kennycmckee - Moderator Feb 6 @ 9:28 PM EST
Instead of being the Advice Monster @KathyPerret mentioned earlier, I think I'm a Reflection Monster, haha! #educoach

Q4 How are clear learning targets and goals important for the Thinking Aloud Move? #educoach
  • KathyPerret - Moderator Feb 6 @ 9:29 PM EST
I agree. It is a natural fit for reflection. The coach modeling their thought process opens up reflection. #educoach

What exactly is a think aloud? I have never heard of it before until this semester of college. #educoach #Sp19edfb4338
    In reply to @KathyPerret
  • ChristinaSwee23 Feb 6 @ 9:31 PM EST
A4 I think clear learning targets and goals will keep the think aloud focused, which is why the targets and goals are so foundational to coaching. #educoach
  • KathyPerret - Moderator Feb 6 @ 9:31 PM EST
A4 It is important to keep the targets and goals "on the table". They ground the reflection and planning. Without them conversations can go in many directions. Keep the main thing, the main thing! #educoach
  • lsmith0917 - Moderator Feb 6 @ 9:32 PM EST
A4: There has to be clarity within intended learning to spur focused and aligned think alouds. Otherwise, your end goals become skewed and lack clarity. #educoach
  • kennycmckee - Moderator Feb 6 @ 9:34 PM EST
A4: LTs keep the discussion focused. #educoach
  • lsmith0917 - Moderator Feb 6 @ 9:34 PM EST
Absolutely! The alignment is a necessity. #educoach
    In reply to @ChristinaSwee23
  • KathyPerret - Moderator Feb 6 @ 9:34 PM EST
A think aloud is when you share your thinking - it is making the invisible, visible. #educoach
    In reply to @abh199600
  • lsmith0917 - Moderator Feb 6 @ 9:35 PM EST
Have you ever been in a situation where the lack of LTs drove the discussion away from the actual focus? #educoach
    In reply to @kennycmckee
  • lsmith0917 - Moderator Feb 6 @ 9:36 PM EST
Q5 What experience have you had in sorting student work prior to reading about this Coaching Move? What did it help you decide? #educoach
  • abh199600 Feb 6 @ 9:36 PM EST
I think my biggest problem is thinking about my thinking. It is an area I must work on. #educoach #Sp19edfb4338
    In reply to @KathyPerret
  • ChristinaSwee23 Feb 6 @ 9:37 PM EST
Sadly, yes! LTs are a relatively new concept for many of the teachers I work with. #educoach
    In reply to @lsmith0917, @kennycmckee
  • kennycmckee - Moderator Feb 6 @ 9:38 PM EST
A5: I often sorted student writing by what needs existed. This would allow me to make differentiated goals for smaller groups of students. #educoach
  • KathyPerret - Moderator Feb 6 @ 9:39 PM EST
Think alouds take time. We first need to watch what we do as readers or writers (in your case of teaching HS English). When you read/write something take time to notice how you comprehend/tackle text. Watch how you express yourself in writing. This is the foundation. #educoach
    In reply to @abh199600
  • ChristinaSwee23 Feb 6 @ 9:40 PM EST
A5 Sorting student work is so powerful. I find that it helps to propel a coaching cycle as we move into planning the next lesson or steps. #educoach
  • leannaharris22 Feb 6 @ 9:40 PM EST
A5: I think it's also powerful at the very beginning of a cycle/unit. If you have a quality pre-assessment, you can sort it to see how to prioritize the LTs #educoach
  • lsmith0917 - Moderator Feb 6 @ 9:40 PM EST
What Leanna said! Always new opportunities for growth. The alignment you mentioned is so important! It helps connect all of the pieces together to drive meaningful actions. 😊 #educoach

We focused on learning targets for about 4 years before we saw them being used in most classrooms. It is a ripple effect though - especially when teachers see that targets can empower students. #educoach

  • kennycmckee - Moderator Feb 6 @ 9:41 PM EST
Q6 How have you used Sorting Student Work in your work as an instructional coach? #educoach
  • lsmith0917 - Moderator Feb 6 @ 9:42 PM EST
Yes! Allows for responsive instruction to take place and to be used formatively to determine next steps. #educoach
    In reply to @ChristinaSwee23
  • KathyPerret - Moderator Feb 6 @ 9:45 PM EST
A6 When coaching teaching I like to have at lease two data points. Example if T wants me to collect student engagement data, Ts also collect content data (such as a writing prompt). In our debriefing we sort both sets of data to see what it reveals and plan next steps. #educoach
  • lsmith0917 - Moderator Feb 6 @ 9:45 PM EST
We’ve used student work at the start of many of our units of study. It has provided the initial pathway toward responsive instruction as well as determining LTs. #educoach
    In reply to @leannaharris22
  • ChristinaSwee23 Feb 6 @ 9:46 PM EST
Yes - I can see some teachers starting to make the connection! #educoach

  • lsmith0917 - Moderator Feb 6 @ 9:48 PM EST
A6: In my coaching, the teacher and I always try to ground our next steps not only with the the intending goals and LTs, but also student works. Provides a results orientation of student evidence and allows us to see student strengths and areas of opportunity. #educoach
  • leannaharris22 Feb 6 @ 9:48 PM EST
A6: Just like the LTs - I want to be working with Ts to sort and use Ss evidence every step of the way #educoach
  • lsmith0917 - Moderator Feb 6 @ 9:49 PM EST
Q7 On page 115 the authors share a 4-Square planner. How have you used this approach? Or what other tips do you have to use when Sorting Student Work? #educoach
  • KathyPerret - Moderator Feb 6 @ 9:50 PM EST
    #educoach - DUH!
    • KathyPerret - Moderator Feb 6 @ 9:49 PM EST
I typically start with asking the teacher what he/she would like me to collect. One example was "opportunities to respond." In that case I tallied those opportunities for the teacher. #educoch
      In reply to @ChristinaSwee23
  • kennycmckee - Moderator Feb 6 @ 9:52 PM EST
A7: I have not used it before, but I like how clear and intentional it is. #educoach
  • kennycmckee - Moderator Feb 6 @ 9:52 PM EST
Q8 How are clear learning targets and goals important for the Sorting Student Work Move? #educoach
  • ChristinaSwee23 Feb 6 @ 9:53 PM EST
A7 I haven't used it either, but I think it might be a nice intro to differentiating. Sometimes secondary Ts get overwhelmed with groupings. #educoach
  • KathyPerret - Moderator Feb 6 @ 9:53 PM EST
A7 We've done something like the 4-Square Planner when sorting student data such as on a screener. We look at areas like accuracy, fluency, comprehension so that we have a clearer idea of needs. #educoach
  • kennycmckee - Moderator Feb 6 @ 9:54 PM EST
A8: The targets help us determine the criteria for success which enables us to see how students are progressing and think about other supports. #educoach
  • lsmith0917 - Moderator Feb 6 @ 9:54 PM EST
A8: Alignment with intended learning outcomes. It provides a clear purpose when sorting student work which results in instructional moves correlated back to goals and LTs. It is all connected. #educoach
  • ChristinaSwee23 Feb 6 @ 9:56 PM EST
A8: it helps simplify and focus the process. Without that sorting student work can be so overwhelming! #educoach
  • lsmith0917 - Moderator Feb 6 @ 9:56 PM EST
