Thank you for visiting #ksedchat. We welcome all educators to our chat that runs Mondays at 8 p.m. Central. Though many of our educators have their homes in Kansas, all teachers are welcome to pop in and join in on the learning.
HI! I am Carmen Z from McPherson! I am a Learning Consultant and Coach from @ESSDACK. My brother got married this weekend and I gained two nephews and a niece! #ksedchat#alted#traumainformed
Drea, 3rd from Basehor. One of my coworkers got engaged this weekend and another returned from maternity leave today, so the band was back together and celebrating! #KSEDCHAT
Melissa Kennedy, Buhler Grade School principal. Happy to be here! #ksedchat I went to a wedding and watched my daughter as the maid of honor and my son as the scripture reader!
Brad, K-5 Music from @USD409Atchison I just learned that I will be receiving a grant request that I submitted some time ago to buy more RECORDERS and DRUMS for our young musicians! #ksedchat
So happy to be here with some of my favorite people talking about the stuff that truly matters. Today was a great and busy day; but here I am at home... #ksedchat
A1: I would say I am probably considered trauma-sensitive. As a foster/adoptive mom, I learned just how important it is that teachers meet kids with grace & help them unpack what they are carrying, so they can learn. Small actions make a big difference. #ksedchat#traumainformed
A1: I would say #TraumaResponsive. I'm still learning and learned a great deal from @KennedymMelissa and @hsazama at our back to school sessions, but I am really working on how I respond to kids in trauma. I know the trauma is there, what is important is how I respond. #ksedchat
A1: I think we are at #traumaresponsive, we have some school-wide things in place like our morning check in form but more to go before I can say it informs everything we do #ksedchat
A1: We are #TraumaResponsive at #PCElearn and are working hard at accessing all the tools and tips we can to become #TraumaInformed. We will never be done learning about what is best for our kids and I am so happy to be this journey with my friends. #ksedchat
A1. I would say #traumaresponsive because I feel like we can always grow and get better at what we do. #traumainformed . is our school culture but it's a journey. #ksedchat
A1 between sensitive and responsive in my class. I attended a PD this summer on being trauma informed, the ACES survey, but we are not at the school/district level #ksedchat
I would say #traumasensitive we as a school are just learning what #traumainformed can look like. But in my classroom I am working to be aware of my student ACES score and how I can support them. #ksedchat
A1: trauma responsive is the culture we are working in at this USD office. Staff are a bit behind because it takes time- staff don’t have enough of that ever- but we’re working @ it. #ksedchat
Josh Stock, 6th grade ELA teacher from Olathe and Kansas Moonshot podcast host. My day was fantastic, but I overplanned. Too much to do and not enough time, but that means tomorrow is already planned. #ksedchat
A1- I would say trauma sensitive. I have received some training from my current and previous districts, and try to be aware when I have the control, but the science is not being used to drive building decisions...YET. :) #ksedchat
A1: I feel that I am somewhere between #traumaware and #traumasensitive I know a few strategies, but not enough to have it be a regular part of our classroom routine. #ksedchat
Between #TraumaAware and #TraumaSensitive I think....trying to expand my bubble of learning to include more people. Zones of Regulation is just being introduced at my school. #ksedchat
A1 I would say Trauma sensitive. Not being in the classroom I haven’t had a chance to practice what I have learned but I think I have the big ideas down #ksedchat
A1: I would say, somewhere between Trauma Aware and Trauma Sensitive. I have WONDERFUL coworkers who are helping me grow in this area everyday!! #ksedchat
A1: I'm still learning and a novice in my trauma-informed journey. This is definitely a growing and important issue in schools today. I am open and want to learn everything I can to help students feel safer and happier in my classrooms. #ksedchat#SMSPD2018
A1 I feel that I am #traumaresponsive in my classroom. We use class whole class meetings, zones of regulation, and have been digging deeper into emotions and behaviors as a form of communication. #KSEDCHAT
At Buhler Grade School we are in the thick of it...#traumaresponsive and working very hard toward (and gaining significant ground towards #traumainformed! #ksedchat
I would say somewhere between #traumasensitive and #Traumaresponsive I have been blessed to meet with some of the best in the Trauma Business and am still learning and growing! #KSEDCHAT
A1: I would say I'm at #traumasensitive. There are a number of things that I now do differently in my practice because of info on trauma, but more can be structurally different (zone check-ins, restorative justice, etc.) #ksedchat
A1: I’m #traumasensitive! I need time and training to make sure I do this right! I’ve learned through my own research (i.e twitter and YouTube) after hearing everyone else begin to implement, I’m ready to get this going in #usd461#ksedchat
A1: #traumasensitive we have had some training in our building, and I believe we are heading that direction as a district. I’m also using practices with my Ss and watching amazing colleagues do the same! #ksedchat
A1 the biggest key here is how well staff is staying regulated so staff is responding to behaviors/needs. This is the hardest part (to stay regulated). #KSEDCHAT
A1 the biggest key here is how well staff is staying regulated so staff is responding to behaviors/needs. This is the hardest part (to stay regulated). #KSEDCHAT
A2. I would say making them aware of the practices and the reasons behind it. When they take the time to get to know kids and build relationships with true meaning behind it, it makes a huge difference! #ksedchat
A2: First, all teachers and administrators must be on the same page. In order for all staff to play a role, we must start addressing this in every classroom and every building. Support staff must be provided training. They are our first line of defense. #ksedchat#traumainformed
A classroom w/ flex seating and no formal "behavior" management system... just building relations, responding to needs, kids learning, and having fun. #ksedchat
A1: I’m at “trauma-sensitive”. I’m beginning to really think through my actions (how I respond to situations) and the actions of my students. I’m becoming aware of the needs of my students and how it effects them and my classroom. #ksedchat
A2- I would hope to give them the same access to information that classroom teachers get. I know drivers, janitors, etc don't usually sit in on PD, but I know some would come if it was an option and knew it would benefit them and the kiddos. #ksedchat
A2: I think it starts basic, include them at PD, include them in school-wide activities, teach them the importance of the whole child and relationships. Everyone is a valued member of the team! #ksedchat#SMSPD2018
A2 I’ve heard of connecting every adult in the building with a group of kids. That way the kids get to interact with those adults that they don’t see for the majority of the day. #KSEDCHAT
A2. (cont) @AmyROlivares did something really cool last year where we put stickers next to the kids who we had strong relationships with. It made the staff see where we really fail to build relationships with ALL students. #ksedchat
I love how our learning in this topic is a statewide collaborative effort. We visited Derby Hills last week, and they were so gracious in sharing their journey with us. #KSedchat
A2: We did an overview training at the beginning of the year with classified staff. The issue is we only have them all together once at the beginning of year. Need to be more intentional and looking for creative ways. #ksedchat
A2 My school is at an advantage as everyone working came in knowing we are #traumainformed school. We have wrap around services, daily class meetings, eat with Ss and mentor one on one weekly with Ss. Its all hands on deck. #ksedchat
A2: Never leave an invitation off the table! Pay them to be there (don’t forget the subs!), treat staff like the kings/ queens they need to be! Culture to be more for Ss truly starts with ALL STAFF! #traumainformed#ksedchat
I would like to do this (we have done it in the past and asked teachers); however, I would like to ask students who they have a connection with in the building. That way we hear from them who we are missing. Time to get started on it! #ksedchat
A2:Not sure but it’s super important to get everyone involved. The only way to get everyone involved is to give them the gift of time to learn more about #traumainformed Bus drivers are crucial! They are often the first and last people students see everyday!! #ksedchat
A2: Somehow we need to make sure that all staff understand that there is a NEED to be #traumainformed and that it is a real thing that many of our Ss are going through whether we realize it or not. #ksedchat
A2: This is a great question and one we need need to ask when planning future trainings at #usd461 I’m curious to hear how others include them as they are an important piece #traumainformed#ksedchat
A2: Make it personal. Help everyone connect the what and how with the faces of the people that fill the seats. Everyone can connect to this work when we connect to it on a human and not systematic level. #ksedchat
Q2: You have to take the time and give them the resources. Book study's w/ para's and class. staff is just as beneficial (and empowering) as it is with certified staff. The culture of your building dictates their involvement. They have to know how important they are! #ksedchat
I love how our learning in this topic is a statewide collaborative effort. We visited Derby Hills last week, and they were so gracious in sharing their journey with us. #KSedchat
A2. (cont) @AmyROlivares did something really cool last year where we put stickers next to the kids who we had strong relationships with. It made the staff see where we really fail to build relationships with ALL students. #ksedchat
A2 be an educator first then an enforcer if we look for behavior issues we will find it but if we look for the root of the behavior choice we will know how to reach that child #KSEDCHAT
A2: We did an overview training at the beginning of the year with classified staff. The issue is we only have them all together once at the beginning of year. Need to be more intentional and looking for creative ways. #ksedchat
A2: I have SO much to learn from every staff member. They see things that I miss and have connections that started years before I even knew them. We have to open conversation to ALL people in a student's village. #ksedchat
Oh that would be cool! Maybe a Google form? @DHEPrincipal has us asking kids every week who loves them at school. I love hearing their answers! #ksedchat
In reply to
@SJNeill13, @AmyROlivares, @DHEPrincipal
A2: tailor the strategies to the people using them...bus driver strategies/check ins/reporting will look a lot different than a teacher in the classroom #KSedchat
A2 I think recognizing our support staff more formally - make them a "real" part of our school and learning space. Inviting them to training would be a good step. Information needs to be shared. #ksedchat
A2: in addition to providing training, teachers need to love on our support staff. We (Ts) model respect for others in how we treat our colleagues... I have nothing but the greatest love + appreciation for those who help serve kids #ksedchat
A2: I think giving other staff members access to PD would be HIGHLY beneficial... Even if it were online podcasts, online reading, videos, etc. If you interact with students on any level - you need an understanding of how to respond and meet their needs accordingly! #ksedchat
A2: Pt. 2: I also think that making sure adults realize that the majority of the time, students' behaviors are a means of communication - not a sign of disrespect. It is a mindset shift. We aren't going "soft" - we are just seeking to understand. #ksedchat#traumainformed
A2: Educate and communicate! You can’t be a trauma informed school unless all stakeholders are engaged! Invite them into classrooms during family time, have special lunch days where they eat for free with the students. #ksedchat
A2: as a Para (shoutout UV!) I find it super helpful when we are given similar if not there same trainings as Ts. We can work alongside one another so much more efficiently to help Ss if we are on the same page! (Or at least reading the same book!) #ksedchat
A2) Every adult in our building now has a "family" in which we have monthly check-ins with heterogeneous groups of Ss with each grade level being represented in groups of five or six. Just began but I absolutely love seeing my"family" members in class and in the hall! #ksedchat
You can take classified for 1 hour 1 day a week and train them. It is well worth the time away from kids. It's not every week and you could even split them into groups if needed... that is if you have a person in house who can train #ksedchat
A2: We did an overview training at the beginning of the year with classified staff. The issue is we only have them all together once at the beginning of year. Need to be more intentional and looking for creative ways. #ksedchat
A2: making them aware of information they could use. This has been done in other circumstances in our district. Sharing building norms/expectations. This helps them! #ksedchat
A2 have to have a close knit staff who trusts one another tremendously. Have to have opportunity to communicate and collaborate regularly and problem solve without judgement. #ksedchat

I want to send a form to them through Google Forms. Would be easy to administer and see who still needs to respond. I just need a little time in my schedule. :) #ksedchat
In reply to
@rbharder, @jmill517, @AmyROlivares, @DHEPrincipal
Yes Sarah...Our Para's/aides received a mini training on trauma informed at the beginning of the year. Many didn't know what ACES were. We have to be more intentional with our support staff. #ksedchat
A2 I think recognizing our support staff more formally - make them a "real" part of our school and learning space. Inviting them to training would be a good step. Information needs to be shared. #ksedchat
A2: Another thought? If we don't expect students to understand or follow through without proper "clear expectations" - how can we expect the same of our support staff members? We can't expect results/behaviors from staff, when they haven't been given the expectations! #ksedchat
A2 have to have a close knit staff who trusts one another tremendously. Have to have opportunity to communicate and collaborate regularly and problem solve without judgement. #ksedchat
JUST a FYI #ksedchat. This lady does so much for our district. Thank you for jumping in. You are right...we need to start budgeting for paras to attend all of our PD days. Goal for next year! #Bexceptional
A2: as a Para (shoutout UV!) I find it super helpful when we are given similar if not there same trainings as Ts. We can work alongside one another so much more efficiently to help Ss if we are on the same page! (Or at least reading the same book!) #ksedchat
A2: Keep in mind that often our paras are working in one-in-one settings with many students that may have experienced trauma- and often with far less training than certified staff has had. #ksedchat
A2: It's often not about a lack of relationship or 'investment/caring' on behalf of the support staff, it's often just a lack of training! We need to support, our support staff! Whole body instruction, to meet the needs of the whole child! #ksedchat
I’m starting to learn that best trauma informed practices are less about outlining clear consequences/expectations and more about using consequences to repair relationships and “repair the harm” as @johnlaffoon17 would say #KSEDCHAT
#ksedchat a3: we are starting with our site council and then THeY will facilitate small group information mtgs as part of redesign. They will lead the conversation. Their ideas matter not sit and get.
A2: I apologize for pounding this House System drum so frequently, but this is truly how we are promoting relationships with ALL staff. This is how you move from "my" kids or "your" kids to "OUR" kids #ksedchat
A3: McPherson Community members are invited at least once a month for a meeting to chat and share. We watched Paper Tigers one month and then had a wonderful discussion about it. I am excited to see what will come from these meetings! #traumainformed#ksedchat
A3 I helped my district bring mental health services to our buildings . Kids can now be seen at school. LOTS of GREAT convo with this partnership. #KSEDCHAT
A3: why would they not care?!? I feel like this is where the school/prison pipeline conversation comes into play. If we don’t show our student we a. Care and b. How to handle stressors. We are doing our community a huge disservice. #ksedchat
A3: I held parent meetings at Back to School night and have had tremendous response. I have also engrained our PTO. Plus there are many community groups that love to hear from our school community. (Economic Development, Chamber of Commerce, Church groups, etc.) #ksedchat
A3: OPEN THE DOORS! Don’t just share the info, we must speak & passionately share what we are learning & know. PT conference, community learning, BOE training too- this is my goal this year as Supt #traumainformed#ksedchat
A3: I’m thankful my school leaders are paving the way for trauma informed practices, but it is the result of teachers expressing what they need out of PD. We have to advocate for the needs of our Ss and be I afraid to speak on their behalf #ksedchat
I think of that as up down charts, dojo, ticket systems.... pitch it so we aren't thinking about managing kids, but instead let's focus on creating a class community #ksedchat
A3: I think many have already said this but it takes all stakeholders, invite community leaders to your school events, share with other community events like Rotary, Lions Club, local hospital, etc. #KSedchat#TraumaInformed
A3) I think one way is to share your District goals with your District and local Site Councils. Invite your patrons and families to attend your professional development meetings... We are ALL in this TOGETHER, you know. #ksedchat
A3 @acarrillo822 is big on getting community members involved in happensing at our school. As a school we are offering all types of adult geared classes, one of which could include a parent geared trauma unit. #KSEDCHAT
A2: We spent time at the beginning of the year talking about common language to help students identify where they are at emotionally. Hearing the same thing across the building has helped students identify when they are struggling. #ksedchat
During our summer Sunday school series, @GretaColbert and @YoMrKaufman presented to our church for 2 Weeks about trauma and ACES. The first step is awareness and it was a great discussion with so many people who support our schools.
A3: To me, this feels like the gold standard: pulling in community members and groups to help our students and their families who live with trauma. Churches, service organizations, everyone needs to be part of this #ksedchat
A3: It’s more than inviting the community members in the school. We have to get kids out to them so our students can interact in “the real world” with our community to learn about resilience and coping. “We all struggle, but here’s how we face challenges at ___ job” #ksedchat
A3: Help people feel welcome in our school and heard when they share concerns or advice. We cannot be experts in everything but we can be persistent in gaining knowledge in the things that matter. Include the experts, strengthen your partnerships. #ksedchat
A3 I think we first have to tell our story in the community. We have to get out there in person, via media, etc. as well as invite them in. "Bait the hook" and then reel them in so they can be a part of it. Make them part of the conversation. #ksedchat
A2: I apologize for pounding this House System drum so frequently, but this is truly how we are promoting relationships with ALL staff. This is how you move from "my" kids or "your" kids to "OUR" kids #ksedchat
A3: Making them present in our schools/school activities/PD! We need to know names and faces in order for relationships/trust to be built! An email domain doesn't open the door to meaningful discussion and involvement, like a face to face conversation! #ksedchat
A3: Educators must be willing to share about this at church, in community meetings, and through social media/blogging. We have to tell our classroom stories so that people see this is not a race and poverty issue. This is a people issue. It affects every community. #ksedchat
A3: I think our district is pretty good about community involvement. We can obviously improve, but we're doing well getting community partners involved in committees, councils, surveys, vision planning, etc. #ksedchat#SMSPD2018
We’ve had some recent success stories that I want to get out there - that the traditional way isn’t the only way. Also - I think the more we can collaborate with medical and mental health the better!! #traumainformed#ksedchat
A2: I apologize for pounding this House System drum so frequently, but this is truly how we are promoting relationships with ALL staff. This is how you move from "my" kids or "your" kids to "OUR" kids #ksedchat
A4: We love our students; when they hurt, we hurt. This hurt doesn't just stay in our classroom when we leave for the day. Oftentimes, we carry it with us. Self-care is essential. We cannot lead from an empty tank. #ksedchat
A3. If we don't take time for ourselves, we can't be regulated which leads to reacting rather than responding. I take the time to listen to a book on my drive home and make sure I disconnect from school work for at least a couple hours if not all night #ksedchat
A3 SM is one. Our district leaders and many board members are very active. They are excited about what we are doing. Also we have to take time to shout our positives, so communicate where your listeners are email, parentlinks, newsletter, phone calls #ksedchat
A4: Self-care is crucial to our success with our Ss. It makes sure we are energized and ready to give our best to our Ss so that they can be successful in the classroom. #ksedchat#SMSPD2018
A3: Don’t make it about training the stakeholders, but creating a partnership that helps to change the stories of our children/community/future. #ksedchat
A4: To be a "7 Habits" teacher through and through - I have to 'sharpen the saw'. To give my students my best, my school my best, my colleagues my best, and my district my best - I must BE at my best! Rested. Centered. Full of zeal. #ksedchat
A4-I had a rough day last week. I needed to have a good cry (and not feel bad about it), grabbed a @Starbucks, and took a long walk with my puppies. learned that I MUST include some outside time everyday! It helps me so much! #ksedchat#traumainformed
A4 Pt.2: Right now, my self-care technique is a power nap. Yep. Sometimes I just need 10-15 minutes of quiet - where no one needs anything from me. Or a good cup of coffee. #ksedchat
Just talked about this with Principal today. ALL schools need counselors and social workers. Trauma isn’t exclusive to poverty or certain towns. #ksedchat
Q3-Our local Catholic elementary school hosted a community showing of Resilience with @PovertyEdge sharing her passion. I know it ignited me and many others from outside the public school system to do something. To at least start the convo together. #KSedchat
A4: if I’m not regulated, I either over or under react to situations. I need to be the emotionally stable one (aka the adult) in the room with kids to ensure optimum learning opportunities. Reading fiction is how I keep myself sane! Currently reading 👇🏼 #ksedchat
A4 I will not lie: this is an area I need to improve. My best self-care is knowing when I need to go find my people and let them recenter me, make me laugh, boost my spirits. #ksedchat
I always have to remind my self to reflect and then move on. I can't expect my Ss to have a fresh start everyday if I don't or I don't give it to them. #ksedchat
A4: As we progress and dig deep this is becoming a HUGE issue. Vicarious trauma is very real, & I have to do a better job as a building leader to address it with my staff. It's hard, exhausting , emotional work &it wears you out! Needs to be more of a focus for me. #ksedchat
A4: the bachelor. Or any of its franchises, For sure. Also, having an amazing tribe like @MrsWarren313@rbharder and @kelleremix to live life with outside of school too! #ksedchat
A4: I love the tag in - tag out idea for self-care. Would love to see that implemented. Being #traumaresponsive means you are involved in S's lives at a level that is a huge emotional investment. can be draining...but worth it. #ksedchat
A4 without self care teachers will face burnout. No matter how good of a teacher is, they have to take care of themselves. I usually go play a game or two of tennis @DNMS_tennis or with family. #KSEDCHAT
We did Top 20 training at the beginning of the year and spent a lot of time teaching the kids the terms above the line and below the line. We talk about how it's ok to go below the line sometimes, but you don't want to live there. #ksedchat
A4: Being healthy is being regulated. I have had to take this to heart and make some serious changes. Good things have come and I think I'm a better teacher for my kids because I am caring for myself. #ksedchat
A4 As teachers we tend to give all day long. We have to refuel tostay balanced at school and outside of school. If we aren't filled up it becomes that much harder to provide what our ss need. #ksedchat
A4) For my "me" time these are my "go-to's" - family, exercise, reading, spending time playing the piano, listening to music, and thinking about music! #ksedchat#musedchat#altedchat
A4: self care is something I really suck at; but I am awesome to be sure everyone else gets some! Self care is truly absolute & must be of the highest priority for all staff! LAUGH, BUY ICE CREAM, MEDITATE, LAUGH, LOVE, & LAUGH 🤣 #traumainformed#ksedchat
A4 if we do not have self care our own choices in our classrooms can have a traumatic affect on our Ss if we are stressed, depressed, or anxious. Integrate self care by doing what you need, I took the last week off of Twitter #ksedchat
We did Top 20 training at the beginning of the year and spent a lot of time teaching the kids the terms above the line and below the line. We talk about how it's ok to go below the line sometimes, but you don't want to live there. #ksedchat
A4: #ksedchat we can’t take care of others if we don’t take care of ourselves. (Like on an airplane) work out each day. Even at 4am!! And time to laugh and fun. Connect with other twachers I love and admire. #battlebuddies#ktoy#peloton
A4: You’ve gotta put on your own oxygen mask on first before putting it on others. I can tell when I am not taking care of my self- I react more and feel overwhelmed quickly. #ksedchat
A4: Self-care is important because I feel like I give my all into our school day. I kick my feet up after walking the kids out for dismissal. I jam some KidsBop (kids are always close by) and reflect on what I did or didn't do that day. Sometimes, I just play Yahtzee. #ksedchat
A4 Self care is personal. You can't just have self care that involves others b/c we shouldn't rely on others to fill our tank. We need things we can do alone that are good for our hearts, souls, mind= helps us to be fully present when we r w/others.
#KSEDCHAT
A4: These are the risk factors for vicarious trauma. How many can you check off? Yeah, me too. That’s why self care is important... https://t.co/BIdd9amFOz#ksedchat
A4: Teachers tend to think of themselves last & give every ounce of themselves to their kids. But you can’t be your best self on an empty tank. Put on your oxygen mask first. #ksedchat
A4: And while I have a moment, may I also chime in that WE must find what self care works for US? There is no 'right' or 'wrong'. Emotions are valid. Tears don't make you weak. Just because 'yoga' works for her, doesn't mean 'Netflix' makes you lesser. REFILL YOUR CUP! #ksedchat
A4: Self care is important because if you don’t take care of yourself it could lead to burnout. You have to take care of yourself first in order to give to others. I need to get a better balance with my own self care! #ksedchat
A4: notice the good in yourself and your teaching community. It is important to recognize tough obstacles you have overcome or lessons you’ve learned #ksedchat
A4: This year I have tried to take less extracurriculars on and have some days where I don’t do work at home. It helps my brain take a break from school and be more excited to come back the next day #ksedchat
A4 - Self-care is important because it is vital to staying regulated and in turn supporting students fully. Sleep is a must, time for reflection, and all my sounding board peeps @MrsMartin_20@Madsbell2!! #traumainformed#ksedchat
A4: Self-care for me used to include a 30-minute nap after school everyday before I picked up my daughter from daycare. No shame. I needed time to decompress before I could be a good mom for her. #ksedchat
A5: NADINE BURKE HARRIS - her TED talk and her book "The Deepest Well" were so informative. And @povertyedge, and @misszeisler, and @KennedymMelissa, and @hsazama .... I could go on forever! We have some great leaders right here in KS! #Ksedchat
A4: Self-care is like putting your oxygen mask on first before your kids on an airplane. You won't do them any good, if you aren't in a good place to help them. #ksedchat
A4: Also, because I’m on my teacher roll now and I can’t be stoped - I know someone needs reminded of this... so take it in.
TEACHER GUILT IS A LIAR.
You can have YOU time.
It doesn’t make you lazy.
It doesn’t make you weak.
YOU ARE AWESOME.
Now take your nap!
#KSEDCHAT
Help for Billy was purchased for every teacher in the school last year and I’ve loved getting into it this summer and fall. I also love @kimbearden book “Talk to Me” it’s not directly #traumainfomed but its a great resource about how to talk to ppl make them feel valued #ksedchat
A4: Slef-Care is important bc Ts give a lot of themselves w/o self care teacher burnout becomes real. Taking care of myself involes prayer, meditation, and exercise #ksedchat
This is my struggle. I can hold it together for my students but I feel like by the time I get home and Make dinner, my cup is empty for my kiddos. #KSEDCHAT
A5: Not a resource, but a tip I learned is to redirect using questions, and avoid using “I” statements. “Why do you feel angry right now?” > “I need you to stop {insert behavior here} now!” #ksedchat
A4: Self-care gives us a time to refuel. This will help ensure that we are the best version of ourselves for our students. SELF-CARE ISN’T SELFISH.
I “self-care” by going to the gym and reading books.
#KSEDCHAT#traumainformed
A5: I had a really good #traumainformed team last year that came together once a month and collaborated! We went to #tisc in St. Louis and learned so much! This year I joined a new district and am finding I have A LOT of Ts that share my passion! #KSEDCHAT
A5: Rita Pierson is my ABSOLUTE motivational, go to, teacher idol. The girl can MAKE ME LAUGH with her realness (we have the same kind of humor), but also get right in your face and convict you to give it all. Every kid needs a champion! #ksedchat
Try working in self care during the school day. Make sure you eat your full lunch, go outside for a bit and deep breathe, and remember that he to-do list is never done, but some things can wait! #ksedchat
A5: Resilience Coaching, Bridging to Resilience, and Moving the Needle ~ All great learning opportunities through @ESSDACK that have profoundly impacted me, my leadership, and my learning. #ksedchat
A6: After a pretty heavy convo with one S, I wrote him a thank you letter to show how much I appreciated his honesty. Small things make a big difference #ksedchat
Last year I started a long to-do list and then a today list. I add a couple things from my to-do to my today list that have to be done by the end of the day. If I get extra stuff done, great but I end each day with a cleaned off today list. #ksedchat

A6 I need to stop more kids in the hall. Not just to say "Hi" but to ask about them. Had one of those convos last week walking to class and it reminded me how such a little thing can have a big impact. #ksedchat
A6: I know it’s not tomorrow BUT every Friday Ss write a “I wish Mrs. M knew” writing prompt & over the weekend I reply to 76 messages, taking that extra time to reply back makes Monday amazing! ❤️ #KSEDCHAT
A6: Check in on those that were absent, offer a hug without words or reason. iI they had a bad day yesterday, they probably could still use even more compassion today. And 20 second hugs...they really do work! #ksedchat
A6: I will continue to leave book recommendations on kids’ desks w a note that tell them I thought of them when I saw that book.
I also have recess duty so I may just have to join in some four square action. #ksedchat
A6 - Spending 10 extra minutes with each of my classroom kiddos playing a game and just BEING together starts TOMORROW! #ksedchat I also love journaling back to them weekly!
A6- Tomorrow we are going to do the Bandaid lesson over fair vs. Equal. I am hoping this helps build compassion and empathy in our classroom, for themselves and each other. #ksedchat
A6: Something I started doing, which may sound so simple and basic, is making sure I am giving 100% of my attention to the student talking with me. No 'rushed' or 'multi-tasking' while talking. Face to face. Eye contact. Full responses and engagement. #ksedchat
A6: High fives or handshakes as they walk through my classroom door. Just acknowledging each and every student and telling them good morning. #ksedchat
A6: A hug, a smile, a special one on one conversation, a note to parents or a bloomz message about a good thing that happened with a student, play with the kids instead of preparing while they play, stay engaged with them. #ksedchat
A6: I'm going to sit at a student desk tomorrow. I always have one extra desk but I think that I will make it mine to be more available for them. I bet I learn more than I teach. #ksedchat
Games have made such a difference in my classroom community, behavior prevention and maximizing learning! Who knew that using time would help you gain it? #KSedchat
A6: I also love to start conversations with students as 'follow ups' to what they may have talked to me about the day before. "Hey Kate - how is your dog doing today?" "Michael - How was baseball practice?"
It shows I remember and care!

A6) I have PTC's tomorrow evening! Our chat tonight was perfect timing for me to be encouraged to learn more about my students' stories and gain empathy and insight on how to help them become even more successful in achieving their dreams. #ksedchat#altedchat#musedchat
Thanks friends for the great chat, encouragement, and authenticity! #ksedchat YOU AMAZE me with your passion and love for students! So thankful for each of you! #traumainformed
Genius! As long as I don’t put all my time and energy into the unimportant and not time sensitive quadrant (read watching episodes of Queer Eye on Netflix) #ksedchat
A6: I also mentioned this last week during our talk on relationships - but making sure we don't just greet, but also EXIT students with face to face, high five, enthusiasm & love. No rushing! I am going to miss you! YOU ARE LOVED & VALUED in my room! See you tomorrow! #ksedchat
