A5: All I can see is paperwork. Nightmare. Boxes. Hours. Mess. OMG. Irrational Aversion. Hostility. https://t.co/5JDUplxvtE
Q5 do you think a portfolio that followed an S from pk to 12 would aid in transition to each level plus more benefits? Why?

Q5 do you think a portfolio that followed an S from pk to 12 would aid in transition to each level plus more benefits? Why?
A5: yes, a digital portfolio would be amazing and should also be an alternative to high stakes testing now, how to implement?
It's dreamland, all electronic and takes very little if any of your time! https://t.co/5nihYN4u65
A5: All I can see is paperwork. Nightmare. Boxes. Hours. Mess. OMG. Irrational Aversion. Hostility. https://t.co/5JDUplxvtE
Q5 do you think a portfolio that followed an S from pk to 12 would aid in transition to each level plus more benefits? Why?
A5: Can see value of a S port sys. Dig would be best/easiest if secure. Could inform next T of S strengths https://t.co/HA75UQb3Sv
Q5 do you think a portfolio that followed an S from pk to 12 would aid in transition to each level plus more benefits? Why?
A5: Could be positive/negative. Allows T to know S before 1st day. Also one bad year could fill new T mind w/neg opinion.
A5- I'm just envisioning how much use my portfolio was when I graduated college
I think we will have to disagree on that one. Alone? No. More independently? Yes. HS kids still need involved parents.
I think tech is key for success with portfolios - an app like helps streamline the process! https://t.co/MNWEuCMfZw
A5: yes, a digital portfolio would be amazing and should also be an alternative to high stakes testing now, how to implement?
Q5 ummmm. Kind of? I don't know that I need to see elementary stuff as a HS teacher, though.
A5: I am a fan of Ss portfolios! They tell a story about each Ss.
A5: Depends on the portfolio. Would it just be assignments? How would it show growth?
A5: I hate the idea of Ss past latched around their ankle like those parole bracelets. Each year is a new start.
A5: Oh god yes! Why are we not doing this? So beneficial for next year teachers and for the student! It's about THEM, not us.
depends what its used for. I've met many teachers who don't even look in students cum folder for pertinent info until it's too late
A5 yes/no. Yes on getting a feel 4 the S, but 175-ish kids...time to give it justice is a concern https://t.co/G1zUC2drCF
Q5 do you think a portfolio that followed an S from pk to 12 would aid in transition to each level plus more benefits? Why?
A5 Portfolios would be a great resource! A snapshop of where the student is academically.
A5: however I do think Ts would benefit from seeing where their kiddos have come from to meet them individually to help transition
a5 i would like to get ieps as soon as possible. one year i didn't get the paperwork until there was already a 'code brown'
A5: My own Ss had a writing portfolio K-6. Amazing display of learning. Treasure that can't be discarded. https://t.co/mbA0ufuVlg
Q5 do you think a portfolio that followed an S from pk to 12 would aid in transition to each level plus more benefits? Why?
We don't disagree. I'm just out of ideas on how to get them to care. https://t.co/ox9bgoyGzZ
I think we will have to disagree on that one. Alone? No. More independently? Yes. HS kids still need involved parents.

A5: interesting, great way to show growth, our LA do it now for past year..Admin nightmare for big districts https://t.co/VOBOecA25e
Q5 do you think a portfolio that followed an S from pk to 12 would aid in transition to each level plus more benefits? Why?
A5: Well, the Ss do it about us, right? They get all the info on us from older friends. Might as well have the scoop on them too!
A5 A portfolio that focused on S writing would especially be useful for Ts to foster growth/build relationships.
seesaw?! I don't know it. Enlighten sounds interesting
A5: I like the idea of a portfolio, but I’d like it to be digital and a clear system in place for how it is to be used.
I didn't see it as a classifying of students, I saw it as a jump start on helping them succeed. Perspective.
You're a tough nut to crack! https://t.co/1zRCaNvyvr
If I'm the T and you're the A, I nod but don't believe you for a second. Been doing this too long ;-)
A5: Who are all these Ss sailing through in ONE district doing portfolios consistently showing growth and giggles the whole way?
I never thought about the positive aspect. I'm not a fan of the portfolio bc sometimes Ss need a new start. https://t.co/8ZjxYsjnfH
A5 I'm a big fan of portfolios for Ss and Ts! Such an effective way to see progress!
if it was for teacher knowledge though...
A5) The word "portfolio" brings back bad memories of COE, that I NEVER needed to use again! 😂 https://t.co/VAHnkmUu8u
Q5 do you think a portfolio that followed an S from pk to 12 would aid in transition to each level plus more benefits? Why?
No kidding! Took so much time creating as undergrad to be placed in my closet afterwards https://t.co/WkBnRt3K6d
A5- I'm just envisioning how much use my portfolio was when I graduated college
but if we had them, I could meet every kid where they are in writing. Not spend weeks trying to figure it out
Well I think believing they don’t care is presumptuous. They care, but need to be properly engaged. You could ask them.
I don't love the idea of K-12 portfolio. Maybe collection of the previous years work. Ss could choose items https://t.co/lzUCIGW7Dg
A5: I hate the idea of Ss past latched around their ankle like those parole bracelets. Each year is a new start.
I have not used them. It's a dream of mine. I think it would give S's more direction & help them reflect https://t.co/G0kJXgwo0v
A5 A portfolio is an interesting idea. It might provide insight on Ss mathematical maturity and maybe even attitudes towards math.
I agree. More bkgrnd on some kids is great but is a "bad" kid in 7th grade still "bad" in 12th? https://t.co/cHyFp242d3
A5: I hate the idea of Ss past latched around their ankle like those parole bracelets. Each year is a new start.
Agreed. A slippery slope depends on the T, I guess. Hopeful our Ts would use it for the benefit https://t.co/duF25gyeRV

Right, except if I invite 30 parents to P/T Conf and only 12 show up, I get frustrated. Esp if they schedule it!
A5. If used correctly, a T could use it to spot areas which need attention. It is only as useful as the T's using at every grade.
Bigger Q is why are they acting like they don't care & what can we do to reach them anyway. https://t.co/yATppkRhuj
Well I think believing they don’t care is presumptuous. They care, but need to be properly engaged. You could ask them.
a5 maybe more communication vertically. i love talking to the elementary teachers about what worked for a particular student
Disheatening indeed. Parents live busy lives, esp w/ mult Ss. https://t.co/RoSA56I8rZ
Right, except if I invite 30 parents to P/T Conf and only 12 show up, I get frustrated. Esp if they schedule it!
A5: Problems w/ what "counts" as growth come 2 mind as a concern + labels... SO many outside factors...I like Ss getting clean start
That’s frustrating. We have to ask ourselves what we are missing, what we need to change, and what those parents need.
So true! And I'm open to suggestions. I've called, invited Ps to conferences or to the class... https://t.co/DQh7PBLs6O

a5: in my experience portfolios become checklists to complete - lacking authenticity and autonomy
is a digital portfolio program that allows a student to document their progress in real time. https://t.co/JwtE4TjGWr
seesaw?! I don't know it. Enlighten sounds interesting
A5: honestly with 150 new students it is hard for me to use the data I gather from last year beyond sp. Ed and ELL.i diff as need be
This is my idea of a portfolio. S's best work, chosen by S once they are at secondary level. https://t.co/XpGJ5m5BBm
heck yeah! That's what we need
I like to go to former T's and inquire about Ss until they start talking negatively and wishing me "good luck"... then I'm done.
Always liked the idea of doing conferences at a restaurant, and part of the proceeds go back to the school. https://t.co/dCebS2rlnd

I'm actually quite the idealist, but I've been told it's not exactly fun to be my boss. But... I'm adorable!
Is that what your school does? Who pays? Interesting idea!

Why not? I’ve done that with interviews when people can’t come in - it helps.
Every Ss I've ever been "warned about" turned out to be a very great kid that just needed ME. :)
Clever & if they have a play place for littles it helps occupy siblings. Smart idea https://t.co/FvgiNBLyV0

I think it depends on the industry at this point. For my web dev work, a portfolio is essential.

Perhaps parents don't come to conferences because they feel intimidated. If Ps had bad school experiences...
A6) The type A personality in me is dying here. I need another question. The structure is crumbling! Save me!
I like the idea of a digital portfolio.
Q6 Think about your S's. What concerns have you heard from S's that a solid transition program would help with?

At spring HS PT conferences we do a block party. HS students run kid games so parents can conf. We have 3 food trucks there.

Exactly! Do it at McD’s, get some proceeds back to the school and there is free WiFi and a play place for kids.
questions - where are bathrooms, how does lunch work, locks omg, where is office from this class, what is student store

My personal transition is that I'm going to do a few lessons flipped so Ss & Ps can see the same info at any time...
A6: As an elem educator it isn't what they have said but the look they have, scared, unsure
A6 I always flip out when the kids don't know who our principals are...or where the field house is...or basic stuff like that.
A6: Campus is HUGE! The Passport to Success days bring it down, create recognizable faces, & ease anxiety. Great move
or meet parents where they are. Transportation, child care may be why they are no shows. Assume best intent
Have gr8 book case study of 10 new T's.They talk about terrible S's and terrible P's. written in early 60's. https://t.co/bPTKDtrLG5
I think if the pieces included are S-choice, then Ss will care.
and in all honesty I haven't encountered a difficult student yet... Yet they keep sending them to me.
I didn't realize you were moderating tonight friend! Sorry I had to miss most of it!!
if p's can't attend, encourage t's to communicate w/those parents often. Maybe no need for conference?
CONSISTENCY ACROSS GRADES! IDs are a battle and that might decrease if they had to wear them starting in 6h grade
Oh Lord, I've encountered plenty of difficult Ss. But it's not personal. It's rarely about ME. So we reach.
Been so busy w/ the wedding that I didn't do any publicizing this one! https://t.co/tNxsaBXrZ1

A6) When in separate bldgs, we need to communicate with those Ts. Ss say, "They said in 7th grade we would..." and it's not true.
"I don't get how credits work" does a great job explaining HS grad requirements to Freshies! https://t.co/URA1Yr4vZk

and if portfolios help Ss articulate their learning, it's important to colleges! Change the convo a/b purpose
A6: logging off to put my littles to bed. good chat. How many more weeks until school?! Getting excited!

It also helps when our initial communication with parents is positive. https://t.co/KB9lvFu9kN

A6- The basics- Who is my T? Where do I go? Will I have a friend? Q's about lunch, restroom, playground. Reduces S anxiety.
It sure looked like a lot of fun!! Great photos! Can't wait to hear more about it. :)
A6. . Oft it's Ps concerns. Having orientation bf school starts for incoming eases angst 4 all. https://t.co/R74PIh6m8E
Q6 Think about your S's. What concerns have you heard from S's that a solid transition program would help with?

why flip out. Use as a teaching moment.
"I didn't know that club existed."
"We have a ___ team?"
Transition program would help reduce these Q's! https://t.co/URA1Yr4vZk
Q6 Think about your S's. What concerns have you heard from S's that a solid transition program would help with?
I am completely sold on parent led conferences and I was a skeptic. Love them!

A8: Will be going live w/ 1st trans of new 7th graders on Aug 15. Will let you know after https://t.co/UitOIoqcjP
Q7 Share some success's from Transition programs! What worked Gr8!
Interesting point. As Ss progress portfolio could be resume, work sample...my college daughter has been asked for writing samples
A7 had P's tell me that the transition program for 6th graders was the 1st time their kid was that excited about going to school
A8: I'm then able to say "So in English, your T says ___, right?" Ss are always amazed, like it's a magic trick.
A7) when I was going into HS it was great to have a Freshman Connection day. Older Ss showed newbies around and had fun w/us.
Give them some sort of script. Might also help to increase reliable/meaningful feedback from teachers.
A8: We're explicit about similarities and differences in writing expectations. Seems to help MUCHLYMUCH.
A7) Make sure the faculty/staff is completely aware of your school's mission, vision, brand. Give them tools to communicate that.
A7: we bus all incoming 6th graders for a fun day to ease the pain. Our moving up is Wednesday! Will share! https://t.co/FSxW2yB7RV
Q7 Share some success's from Transition programs! What worked Gr8!
A7: as long as it's genuine caring, doesn't matter if a big event or a simple hello. Ss just need to know they're truly welcome
Parent-led or student-led? I hadn’t thought about having parents lead them. Could be interesting.
A7: At DCHS Leadership kids form a London bridge that freshies walk through from car to front door. https://t.co/wWWuPCvSv0

They love to know that we care! It's the little thoughtful things that make a huge impact! https://t.co/svBNPqmgyF
I had a pretty tough Ssick from school a few days. I called to check on him. The kid and parents were great!
I (personally) definitely care more about the things I invest myself into.
This has to be real for the parents to believe it. https://t.co/gCjxq3DoQm

Perhaps those kids who don't, need to know someone thinks they're capable, have potential.
However, not sure that peers would allow themselves to invest in something they were forced to do.
I meant student led...tweeting while getting in my steps and
