A1: The stigma of failure.

Good Morning Teresa! Hope all is well!
Good morning all. It's been a while since I have been able to join. Looking forward to today's chat!
A1: Teachers are expected to be experts from day 1. VERY little tolerance for making mistakes when kids are involved.
A1: Fear might be one of the big reasons we try to hide our mistakes. Fear of looking foolish, fear of letting others down.
A1 Mistakes rarely are seen as opportunities to learn / not engrained in our culture
Mistake #1... answering the phone 3 years ago when called! It's been downhill from there!
Love the topic, our district is focused on Growth Mindset this year
Hello, sir! Hope your morning is going well!
not "simply" but mistakes are the ONLY teachable moments. No on learned from already knowing!
Hey there is my colleague!!! https://t.co/PlR65DonPF
Good Morning , glad to be here, I have the immense pleasure and opportunity to work with Jon Harper.
A1: Pride, fear, anxiety, school hierarchy, etc. When we don't admit/share mistakes, we prevent others chance to learn from ours!
A1 I believe that a climate that doesn't embrace mistakes as stepping stones to learning prevents sharing mistakes.
A1:Fear of appearing incompetent or inadequate.
markbarnes19: TonySinanis You again? We spend far too much time together.
markbarnes19: TonySinanis if joesanfelippoFC were here, he'd say you're an expert at mistakes. Jonharper70bd
markbarnes19: MathDenisNJ is coming to the podcast soon. When are you coming on jesslahey?
markbarnes19: TonySinanis You bet. .
markbarnes19: jcordery bradmcurrie Hope you are both living the dream
A1 It takes courage to admit you missed the mark. . Pressure to always be right. Esp in leadership.
A1) Fear of it being brought up again by your "leaders" at some later time
A1: In the moment, you may be still coming to terms with it.
A1: Worries about being perceived as a "failure" and not knowing everything about education bc teachers are supposed to know all
A1: Educators do not share mistakes because they were unfortunately brought up in a culture that embodied perfection
Morning! Alana Stanton from Dacula Ga. Kindergarten. Just finished first week
So true, it takes time to unlearn past learning that's not true or helpful.
Fail = First Attempt In Learning
This feels like walking into a party! Love the energy and excitement this morning.
A1 Shame and the fear of looking less than perfect.
thanks, Mark. Great to see you here.
so glad to have you on with us Pam!
Good morning. Jen from NY.
Sorry to hear that Scott! Must not be easy working with this guy! : )
A1: A sense of pride, we might feel embarrassed when we make a mistake or that someone is going to laugh at us.
Q1. Embarrassment, plain and simple oh and vanity.
Thank you & for allowing to hijack for the day! :)
A1 Fear that others will think we're dumb, that were worthless. Fear of not being the person we want to show to be. Embarrassment
A1 Negative reaction from others. That people will be critical of the mistake and not give chances at redemption.
Hey everyone. Joining a little late.
A1: Pride. Stupid pride keeps many from sharing their mistakes
A1: Fear of judgement or looking unprepared/incompetent/uncaring.
Gm from Fl, 7th grade Civics
A1 We are all in cocoons of our clssrm & since others rarely see them, we don't think its worth the time to explain what happened
A1: Teaching is a VERY public profession. Some struggle with acting like a teacherβand want a perfect performance.
A1: the judgment of failure. Need to learn how to embrace mistakes and improve
Somewhere where the food is really good
We want to feel like we're on top of our game ... and we want others to think we're on top of our game. https://t.co/nCd5Nqegk4
Q1. What do you think it is that keeps us from sharing our mistakes with others?
A1: Fear of failure, signs of weakness, not being able to solve an issue by yourself all = not sharing mistakes
None are correct!
A1) we care about how others perceive us. We always see the fruit of the tree but not the storm it grew in.
A1: Fear. They don't see failure as a resource.
Intentional rewiring of the brain is needed by practice, perspective and language change,
Mistake #2. Allowing to put his name next to mine on 3 books when his contribution was a bio. https://t.co/4s7lDfUkjX
Mistake #1... answering the phone 3 years ago when called! It's been downhill from there!
A1. Often a fear of admitting we aren't necessarily the omniscient being we want everyone to believe we are. :)
A1 Fear that we will be seen as ineffective, incompetent. https://t.co/Or3xFJOdBV
Q1. What do you think it is that keeps us from sharing our mistakes with others?
A1: sometimes I'm just 2 focused on solutions & forget to just relate. I used to fear sharing mistakes but I've grown out of that!
A1: There is something about vulnerability that people see as imperfection, when it is in fact beautiful https://t.co/IEtuhuFnvg
Q1. What do you think it is that keeps us from sharing our mistakes with others?
I can' thank you enough Ross. https://t.co/gCxGtlz9yA
If nobody is going to thank me for joining the chat, I'm leaving.
Aloha educators! I'm Sean from Raleigh, NC. I teach 5th grade math and science.
hi Christina. Good to see you again!
A1: too much pride. We don't practice what we preach! We want Ss to admit mistakes and learn, but we don't reflect and learn.
AMEN Michael! Agreed that pride often serves as a barrier to acknowledging our mistakes!
We all have Imposter Syndrome to a lesser or greater extent -fearing others figuring out we don't know what we're doing.
Agree. That was the mindset for so many years. I think that is changing though
A1 Maybe fear of being judged by what didn't work. When in reality, those r the best lessons & push us 2 future success/innovation!
When I work to overcome I force myself to say "best thing that ever happened to me" This helps me to see the learning.
A1 Hi Brad, Sadly culture continues to exist particularly if admin don't share mistakes, take responsible risks openly.
A1: staff don't share failures because maybe that's not part of their school culture, which of course, it should be.
Too many to count? https://t.co/3ugpoAW3bM
Morning ! Joe, Supt in WI. Just here to confirm all mistakes has made in the past 3 years. This is going to be so fun.
A1: it is like the Facebook culture, only giving people a glimpse of who you really are, not.the full story
A1. Also, a cut into positional authority. For whatever reason, as a species, we believe role/rank can define us.
There is a HUGE range of public perception on what a teacher actually does/is. Everyone went to school so they all have opinions.
Fear of being criticized! Wanting to keep ourselves safe.
A1: The fear that others will judge, or that we have let them down.
A real fear! I beat them to punch by laughing at my own mistakes. Opens up discussion for growth! https://t.co/e8OOvvZ50L
A1: A sense of pride, we might feel embarrassed when we make a mistake or that someone is going to laugh at us.
a1: fear of your mistake being the only thing people remember and it being how they evaluate you.
Checking for North Texas assistant superintendent
A1:Culture of compliance or control, fear, pride, lack of leadership that models growth frm failure, unreal expects, combo of those
This is a real issue for some teachers. Perfectionism can be crippling⦠https://t.co/3cIwQH9gaN
A1 Shame and the fear of looking less than perfect.
a1we don't want to be vulnerable, people will perceive us to be weak
A1: we are supposed to be leaders for our Ss. Many see mistakes as a fault not something to learn from. Mistakes help us learn.
Imposter Syndrome can keep me from admitting what I don't know, a kind of mistake.
We hold ourselves to such high standards that I think many attach a stigma of weakness to mistakes https://t.co/S0UQQP1GtG
Q1. What do you think it is that keeps us from sharing our mistakes with others?
A1: Mistakes are penalized by education culture instead of treated as growth opportunities. We need to change the mindset.
Lol. Joe, shouldn't you be sleeping?
I agree Jon, and have great respect for you. I look forward to that day.
A1 Mistakes are personal & effect confidence. Mistakes typically are not viewed in a positive way. Making them makes you feel π©y π
A1. I believe we often think that sharing our mistakes will make others think less of us when oftentimes the opposite is the case.
A1: We strive for perfection because we are human but our mistakes make us learners. They donβt define us- they can help us grow.
Not admitting our mistakes is a result of lack of self-confidence. Pretty much sums it up.
A1 - I always wonder if there is a limit to the amount of mistakes made?
Nicole, I agree. Vulnerability opens to the door to such great learning and relationships too.
A1: we don't share mistakes because we are scared of the path those mistakes might take us https://t.co/1sXAce1430
Q1. What do you think it is that keeps us from sharing our mistakes with others?
A1: pride, fear, and the need to be perfect This means we miss out on collaboration and brainstorming
Same here. It's been a while since I've been here.
A1 We can be driven by fear. Fear of making a mistake. Mistakes are needed if we are going to learn anything.
A1 Sharing mistakes makes us feel vulnerable - which many avoid (even thought it actually makes us more authentic)
and I think a lot of that starts with a school culture that respects failing forward.
Good point. Yet doctors and pilots always have someone near them that can help. Not teachers
Glad I just saw this! Looks like is going to be another invaluable learning moment...ck it out https://t.co/PYfJ1CkQX7
A1 Embarrassment, judgement, not part of normal conversations. https://t.co/Bc8tIG1W9L
Q1. What do you think it is that keeps us from sharing our mistakes with others?
A1: I share them, I want people to know that we learn best by risking and making mistakes
it's our fixed mindset. Our fear of failing and how that is perceived. Yet sharing a mistake is a very powerful tool
Yes. Judgment is a huge challenge. We do it too regularly and with too little regard!
A1: prior experiences, if we were made to feel badly about our mistakes, we will be less likely to show our vulnerability
what a great point Pamela! Mistakes do have a personal impact; especially depending on how people around us respond!
Good morning Jessica from Pittsburgh. Jr high AP
A1 - It takes a stable and safe environment for Learning and Risk-taking to share the same space.
Expectations of others keep us from admitting mistakes, whether parents, students, colleagues or our family. Can be very isolating.
A1, As adult/teacher, you want to think you know more than middle schooler. It's embarrassing when I don't. And I don't.
A1: Pride, fixed mindset, lack of interest in collaboration, extreme perfectionism.
I love meeting people face to face and trying to match them to their profile pic on Twitter or FB. Exactly!
A1 i took the risk of exposing my vulnerability as a but it wasn't always valued
I want to add this to my Learning Behavior and Mindsets collection--share w/Ss. Thanks Pam.
Good morning - Don - MS Principal Long IsLand - Sorry I'm late...
A1: Teach math & encourage Ss to look for my mistakes, bc I make them too. The get a peppermint when they find one and can explain.
A1 personally, I like mistakes as I learn a lot but I work in a very supportive environment.
We are so afraid our image will be tainted.
A1: Harder to admit mistake as newer teacher than one w/ experience too. Often perceived differently.
A fear of looking inadequate especially to those in management
A1 I think we perceive that others will judge us as incompetent and that runs contrary to our desire to be the best.
Hey Mark! Hope all is well.
A1: People don't take time to analyze mistakes. Too quick to forget them and move on
We are only who we are willing to be. We can go our whole lives without ever really being "ourselves."
A1: reflection can be a scary opportunity for many educators, sharing failures/mistakes opens up possibility of critical feedback
A1: The narrative of what we do isn't always awesome. If we admit to doing something wrong we feel it contributes to the narrative.
A1: How we will look in the eyes of the person we are telling. Takes a very comfortable/secure person who is willing to admit them.
A1 - When we loose focus & think being the hero/champ is more important and don't want to loose our status https://t.co/nQiZZiaC3e
1st year teachers have the same expectations as 30 year veterans. This is absurd, but true.
If they help us grow & be better, should be we still refer to them as mistakes?! https://t.co/AuWISlo5xs
A1: We strive for perfection because we are human but our mistakes make us learners. They donβt define us- they can help us grow.
A1: making mistakes makes you human nothing wrong with sharing
A1: vulnerability...weakness...Ts don't want to feel these but think we learn most when we admit to it!
A2 many leaders do not want to admit mistakes. They believe they need to have all the answers. https://t.co/pqveifIFKz
Q1. What do you think it is that keeps us from sharing our mistakes with others?
we can't grow if we do not know what we did wrong.
Is it that we strive for perfection or that we fear looking inept or ineffective? I think mistakes are less about perfection!
A1. For me, it's 80% pride. Sometimes I don't want to believe that my beautifully crafted lesson could be flawed in any way :-{)
True. I wonder if Facebook live will change this. Show our mistakes and how we change https://t.co/hFazegxnor
A1: it is like the Facebook culture, only giving people a glimpse of who you really are, not.the full story
A1: #1 reason, pride. #2 Fear of response from our peers.
Agreed - our perceptions of others' expectations of us. https://t.co/Ga4VNRctt4
A1. I believe we often think that sharing our mistakes will make others think less of us when oftentimes the opposite is the case.
And interestingly, that image is often only of our own creation.
Yes I confirm statement. Billy and I are here to confirm Brad's mistakes!!
true too. I start the year by explaining that failing is ok and that we will grow. You don't know...YET!
So sad, but true! https://t.co/omey8N9s1f
A1. Also, a cut into positional authority. For whatever reason, as a species, we believe role/rank can define us.
A1: If we know failure is an important part of learning for our students, then we must model that behavior for them
You got that right Maureen!
Yes vulnerability-Brene Brown's book "Daring Greatly" a good one to read! https://t.co/bGeQHOREAt
A1: There is something about vulnerability that people see as imperfection, when it is in fact beautiful https://t.co/IEtuhuFnvg
Q1. What do you think it is that keeps us from sharing our mistakes with others?
A1 pride. Lack of transparency by others. Fear of judgement instead of being supported in improvement. Did I mention pride?
Good morning Desiree from MI
A1. I feel that our cultural norm tells us to refrain from being vulnerable.
It's like U get a cert. & U R suppose 2 know it all from day 1. Ed. more than anything = work in progress https://t.co/i0nq5ncxNC
A1: Educators do not share mistakes because they were unfortunately brought up in a culture that embodied perfection
A1) we are raised in a culture that embraces perfection and anything else makes you inadequate.
I talk about this with the pre-service teachers I serve. Itβs a real issue. https://t.co/PqAJTYMwJP
1st year teachers have the same expectations as 30 year veterans. This is absurd, but true.
A1: Many of us have been taught to "Never let them see you sweat."
We're told not to show weakness by keeping a stiff upper lip.
Don't give up. Help staff embrace mistakes and iteration
agreed 100%. New teachers can be timid to share failures, as they don't want to be perceived in wrong way.
A1: not sharing means we are afraid of making mistakes - we need to make mistakes to push the boundaries
such a great point. It does come back to modeling for our kids!
I prefer learning opportunities!
The best way to learn is through your mistakes
A1:Culture of compliance or control, fear, pride, lack of leadership that models growth frm failure, unreal expects, combo of those
This is a big factor. How does our past impact our responses to stress in the present?
That is exactly how people should think of mistakes!
A1. Lack of reflection with a rush, rush, rush mode of operation.
Welcome Don. Glad you made it.
Those up the food chain rarely give you the space to
A1 TRUST --- can I trust that the ppl to whom I am admitting errors will accept
A1 ... Because no one ever asks us to share failures ... Imagine the ISTE session on teacher failure 101
A1) discusses failure and mistakes a lot in the context of shame. We have narrative of perfection I see this w Ts
haha understandable but you can also use it as opportunity to demonstrate love of learning more from all π
A1 - not all mistakes are good ones or healthy ones. It's good to keep perspective on them
A1: Unsupportive leadership that will use mistakes against you. People won't be real if they don't trust you.
A!: We live in a high stakes, competitive world and it seems patience for the learning curve is becoming smaller and smaller
Ts are not given the leeway to be "human" we are held to an incredible standard, which is good, & tough when learning
A1: We've been conditioned to avoid failure. Admitting mistakes feels like admitting we've failed.
Good morning Satchat, Susan joining late from VA!
A1 People need to feel safe to make mistakes and be honest about them. Takes time! A judgement free zoneπ
A1: Fear of being unfairly judged by our mistakes, fear of being imperfect, fear of showing what we don't know to others
As terrible as it sounds to non-educators, we are daily performing psychological experiments on children. Some work, some don't.
I think all I do is admit mistakes, should probably swing the pendulum the other way sometimes.
fear that our evaluation will be tainted because of a mistake we often try to cover them up
I am more uncomfortable sharing my mistakes when I haven't come up with a solution; unresolved mistakes stress me out.
Showing our vulnerability. It's hard to put ourselves out there sometime.
that's how my admin approaches our culture. I find it hugely valuable when the lead learner shares examples of failures.
, it humanizes us with our students and they realize we can make mistakes too.
Shouldn't be the catalyst for being more understanding when do the same?
1A)In a fixed mindset mistakes=lack of trust
A1.5 Sadly,We also overestimate the view others have on our mistakes. Most people are understanding. Mistakes=learning
A1: I make mistakes and look silly every day. Greatness is a goal that is nebulous - As long as we reflect and move forward we win
Very true statement and this is to the detriment of the learning process, growth, and collaboration.
https://t.co/7avOLcBy6J
A1) we are raised in a culture that embraces perfection and anything else makes you inadequate.
I can totally get down with that!
A1: Not everyone works in a culture where mistakes are treated as First Attempts in Learning,
A1: I think the biggest reason is our pride.
Perhaps why we must constantly push ourselves and Ss to reflect-can be painful but is helpful for growth.
Fantastic--i can't wait to share w/Ss.
Definitely. Even though hearing about others mistakes rarely makes us feel critical of them https://t.co/CROo1ieIuS
A1 Fear that others will think we're dumb, that were worthless. Fear of not being the person we want to show to be. Embarrassment
A1: cultures that value competition generate fear. Failures are not seen as learning/growth opportunities but as losses.
good to see you Billy - and love this topic - we all get things wrong because we are ... human
Yes! So true!!! I'm struggling with this right now as I embark on a new position. https://t.co/54i4wz5vNY
And interestingly, that image is often only of our own creation.
Absolutely. Trust is a huge factor!
Good morning ...High School AP from Upstate NY dropping in for a few minutes! π
yeah. We need to turn all these from fears to accomplishments. Show what we don't know and be imperfect!
Q1: too often it seems we barrel toward the right answer and neglect the value of the mistakes that were guideposts.
A1: failure in school is still perceived as negative. have to change the mindset. Our greatest successes come from previous failure
Totally what I do. Love talking about failure, but I can empathize w others who aren't as comfortable.
is one of my favorites! Great book https://t.co/TCUXkXnk9e
Good morning ! Running a little late! Kristin, 6th grade ELA and SS
You got that right Perry!
What? Teachers live outside of school? I have a cot in the math office and no family or social life. https://t.co/lA6DTvmsRF
Ts are not given the leeway to be "human" we are held to an incredible standard, which is good, & tough when learning
good morning my friend! Thank you for joining us for !
A1 We want to seem like we have it or are in control. But mistakes and fails can help us become better. They are experiences.
YES! How did it get that way...so strange because we expect mistakes from our youngest learners.
A1: Usually those mistakes were then thrown back at us with lower numbers or scores. There was no discussion about how to change.
Yet science has taught us that we need to document failures so that others don't make same mistake later
Q2. How do you support your colleagues when they make mistakes?
A1 instead of looking at mistakes as a positive quality 4learning many view it as failure~we learn from errors tweak them & move on
Good morning, Alana! π
True, I find the more I share, the less I worry about making them. They're gonna happen either way! https://t.co/tFzlDMUqyZ
Not admitting our mistakes is a result of lack of self-confidence. Pretty much sums it up.
An important reminder, I think⦠https://t.co/fcfv91CYH4
A1 - not all mistakes are good ones or healthy ones. It's good to keep perspective on them
A1.A supt. once told me we need to admit our mistakes as kings long ago did-riding through town on a horse w/ tomatoes being tossed
Good morning, Michelle from Houston, TX
Agreed. Our media even. How often do they show all the failures of popular media figures before they were an expert?
. Yes, and depending on how we were nurtured - do we believe our true self is good enough?
A1: school cultures that are not conducive to honest reflection & growth; fear of being vulnerable to criticism/rebuke
A1- The fear of (-)judgement, others finding us inadequate and unqualified, our personal quest for perfection; all in our minds!
. We can't even decide WHY we send kids to school in the first place, let alone what success looks like.
Steve in Ontario late to the chat but ready to go.
pride is definitely up there.
different world - I've been in & out of schools & central several times over my career/ I'm better 4 seeing both POV
Me too... And these are the mistakes I should be sharing the most. https://t.co/EnjfF38toW
I am more uncomfortable sharing my mistakes when I haven't come up with a solution; unresolved mistakes stress me out.
We need to teach our kids to be in competition with themselves & collaboration with each other.
Q2: we have a Spectacular Failure Award that we give to folks on occasion when they are willing to share a mistake w colleagues.
So true, Meredith--I really want to slow the classroom down to leave good room for reflection this year.
Hi ! I'm from Italy
I'm still learning and I'm mother of a Second Grade student
A1: We went through schools that taught us that we are defined by our mistakes and that is not how ppl want to be defined.
Yes, especially in areas where we have a fixed mindset. Need to develop, embrace & model a growth mindset https://t.co/DXKAvIDhTp
A1: the judgment of failure. Need to learn how to embrace mistakes and improve
Yes, especially being honest towards ourselves. https://t.co/TeX4sniQLM
A1 People need to feel safe to make mistakes and be honest about them. Takes time! A judgement free zoneπ
Hmmm. Let me put my coffee on and join in.
A1) Pride, fear that others will judge you as "less" than great or worse, incompetent in some way; desire to portray perfection
THIS IS AMAZING!!! ! https://t.co/MjdiGnnIUv
Q2: we have a Spectacular Failure Award that we give to folks on occasion when they are willing to share a mistake w colleagues.
such a valid point Tim- fear of judgement is a huge part of the equation.
And sometimes we don't want to hear the feedback when we share or ask for solutions
Exactly, reminds me of the movie :Meet the Robinsons". One of my favorites https://t.co/QzaLK7QkDG
and I think a lot of that starts with a school culture that respects failing forward.
A1 teaching is a high-stakes job- kids and their feelings. It's a lot of pressure and we don't want to fail them. Also, fear
I think you've just come up w/a successful session topic we all have experiences to share! https://t.co/BD4z7L4PGj
A1 ... Because no one ever asks us to share failures ... Imagine the ISTE session on teacher failure 101
A2: It can be embarrassing to have a mistake acknowledged. Show grace and empathy, but donβt talk down to them.
And conversely, veteran Ts who relocate are expected to be perfect too.π± https://t.co/dcQ5dsVJ8t
1st year teachers have the same expectations as 30 year veterans. This is absurd, but true.
A leadership paradox: there is strength in vulnerability.
No one likes being told they are wrong, but how you react to your mistakes will influence your Ss attitude toward theirs.
A1: I'm not sure if age factors in- as I get older, I am much more comfortable admitting to mistakes, failures, & iDunno's.
. Key words - "very supportive environment". And how do we create this for others?
A1 Trust -- we all need to feel valued and trust that our sharing with others will be appreciated by someone else.
A2: I admit if I have made the same mistake.
Hi Fred, and this leads us to finding that room to reflect, analyze, and be intentional.
Are they mistakes or opportunities to learn & grow. It's all about perspective. G'day all https://t.co/tweq2jic2j
Q2. How do you support your colleagues when they make mistakes?
A2: become solution oriented a day first see if the problem is truly seen as that for everyone involved
yes! Especially w bell schedules! I feel like I am on auto pilot sometimes
Q2. listen to them, most of the times all they want is someone to listen, not necessarily fix the mistake.
A2) Remind them that you are their friend and believe in them
help the person first then worry about the error
A1 When local culture is fast competitive, it discourages us from sharing our mistakes We fear to lose our face
A1: mistake sharing is difficult if you don't have a supportive audience
A2: as admin, celebrating their self-awareness and listening to hear their next steps. Guiding and helping as needed
Create an environment where risk takers are celebrated not reprimanded by a mistake
A1: Lack of support, fear of being disciplined via on the spot poor evaluations
A1: your mistakes can be used against you - that just shows the weakness of others who do this - be brave!!
Heard talk about his failures and how he turned them into successes at this week.
A1 when you share mistakes you open urself to ridicule this holds us back, just have to rem. the growth opp is huge and outweighs.
A2 Listen to them. Advise them only if they request it. Most importantly, be present and listen.
A1 maybe someone needs to write the book ... Fail Like A Teacher FLAT ? ... We're not perfect but we do a good job hiding it
That's why I think people are scared to take risks.
A2 Listening...And offering advice when asked. Advice not requested is advice ill received.
Lead by example. I celebrate my mistakes as much as I know how and encourage others to do the same.
Q2. How do you support your colleagues when they make mistakes?
Q2: We talk often about Failing Forward, and I model it by making mistakes publicly.
A2: Being open about mistakes- I share mine. You share yours. Let's reflect and grow together!
Love this! Another quote for my door :) https://t.co/syIZ98eDDE
A1) we care about how others perceive us. We always see the fruit of the tree but not the storm it grew in.
I truly feel that outdated structures that exist in many schools hinder good, deep, reflective, hands-on learning
A2: Encourage reflection, acknowledge the feelings associated with the mistake, support-then collaborate on possible improvements
A1: As I head back to a classroom in September, I am prepared to readily admit to making loads of mistakes! πππ
A2: listen, give space to reflect and try to provide Qs that might help, relate w/ similar experience but also share how I moved on
A3 I support, tell them it is okay, and find a way I can help if needed. I also tend to tell a mistake I have made that was worse
A1 assumes we don't share our mistakes with others.
A2: Mindset of growth. Help 2 learn from mistake & show that learning occurs from mistakes.
So true Jim, good to see you my friend https://t.co/ZcLx1Wd5TR
A1: Usually those mistakes were then thrown back at us with lower numbers or scores. There was no discussion about how to change.
A1 what would help if we established a culture of trying new things, if it doesn't work,we try again. No blame, less fear.
A1 fear of parents, administrators, bloomboard lol, evaluations. Stakes are higher when you actually work your tush off and try
Just think if adults have issues w/making mistakes how do students feel? Judgement free supports growth https://t.co/Sp9L9nG4bZ
A1 People need to feel safe to make mistakes and be honest about them. Takes time! A judgement free zoneπ

-Mistakes provide opportunities to learn far more than would otherwise occur.
That is all I have to say.
A2. Support colleagues mistakes w a) modeling failure b) finding humor c) privately sharing issue d) empathize - be part of team.
A2: I try to be understanding and supportive. Saying, "I do that all the time!"
A2: I've said for 2 years that I want them to take educational risks & it's ok that this leads to mistakes. Give them the OK to try
A1 revealing mistakes means taking a step of trust w/ someone- sometimes just sharing w yourself is a step in the right direction
A2 Perfect time for a face to face conversation in their room or offsite. Most important, listen. https://t.co/2nfoSZZgcx
Q2. How do you support your colleagues when they make mistakes?
yes! Reminds me of Daring Greatly book!
A2: I love that our PGM in is based on reflection not results. Data INFORMS doesn't drive. Learn from the experience.
A2: By listening...to their mistake, the situation, their logic. Sharing feedback when needed & wanted. No admonishment, just love!
A2 - everyone makes them. Learning from them is the important part. Making the same mistakes over and over is tough to support
credibility is a variable too! We want people to trust us & believe in our ability.
A1 control. If you're right, you're in the drivers' seat. You're the go-to.
Good morning ! Jennifer in Clayton, NC
A2: helping them with whatever they need to fix. Work to build an environment where mistakes. Just part of learning.
A1) failure is also enhanced due to the fact that we give predetermined times to when particular skills must be mastered by all.
A2:Encourage T's to keep trying! If you're positive about failure, they will likely to try new things w/out fear
Why I believe in the power of the "why" and "why not"
A2: by asking them if they are looking for advice or just simply a place to vent? How they answer depends on the track!
A2 sense of humor is important -- if we can joke about it -- it'sgotta be ok
A2 A follower is not going to cure cancer. Supporting mistakes supports innovation.
It depends a lot on the type of mistake and were they are in their career, NQT support looks different in many cases
A2: it is important to understand the thought process behind a mistake then you have created a learning opportunity
A2: PLCs and PLNs are the most effective way to discuss trials and errors and all learn from our mistakes. Again it's a mind shift
A2 ask them what they learned from the mistake and give them another chance
A2: talk w/ them about the process. Listen to what they have done. Offer to observe. Just be present for support. Little does a lot
A2. As a P, try to be first to convince them it is okay. I also try to admit my mistakes in front of staff to model right mindset
A2: help them to understand that making mistakes is human - people need support at moments like this
A2 Using questioning is a powerful way to begin with dealing w/mistakes--helps people to look at situation.
A1 Mistake analysis, great teaching/learning tool, but we didn't seen good models of it in our exper, it's outside our comfort zone
A2 Can be hard if ego-boo gets in the way. I try to be a sympathetic ear rather than a solution giver.
"Failing Forward." That is lovely.
This is I often get caught up with needless worry over what others might think...need to work on that!
glad to be here, Jon. Hope all is well.
love that Ray - I say is the best couch PD available at 7:30 am on Sat :)
And covering up a mistake has massively worse implications than making one.
A2: We support colleagues by letting them know that it's okay to make mistakes and also model that it's okay to make mistakes
A2: Are they asking for help? Help them see different solutions.
A2 - always respond with empathy and understanding. How can we learn and use this as an opportunity to be better?
This. https://t.co/ztJJYvI76x
A2 Listening...And offering advice when asked. Advice not requested is advice ill received.
A2 Support-empathy and owning up to your own similar mistake are key & and then helping to find a solution https://t.co/9NZVjiTUTN
Q2. How do you support your colleagues when they make mistakes?
A2: help everyone see why mistake happened. Maybe the directions were not clear, guidelines not correct or timing poor.
A2: We learn by doing...but we learn more by reflecting on what we have done.
AMEN Don! Hope all is well my friend!
Or why we are teaching specific content or how we are teaching it
Listen first to support colleagues; be a supportive presence. Let the colleague do the processing and sharing.
A2: Withhold judgement because no one is perfect.
A2: Talk w/them & reflect. We have the mindset at our school of Failing Forward- take risks & try new things. Mistakes happen- grow
A2 After we share mistakes we can share solutions. Together we can prevent from occurring some harm
A2 Celebrate, especially if they took a risk and then reflect together! We are all in this together and learning togetherπ
Likewise! I have seen that atmosphere on diff levels & the result is the same. People will not open up & growth is stifled!
A1 Traditional view of T is one who has all answers all of the time. That needs to change b/c it is about learning from mistakes.
A2: through conversation...listen and listen. Only provide suggestions if asked.
A2: celebrating their efforts to innovate & problem solve. helping them reflect on what went right and wrong so they can try again
And hard to overcome unless you acknowledge its presence.
Great answer! The more we reflect the more we grow.
A2:We work through it together. Did the entire fail or certain aspects? We tweek, scrap, or reinvent together.
A2: Praise their risk taking. Reflect on mistakes, take actionable next steps and try again.
And how that judgment may affect your own progression
A huge challenge to moving into a new role; but also a huge opportunity. :)
A2: Laugh and tell them you've made similar mistakes, and expose your own blunders. Honest, real. https://t.co/Wt66B5UPfh
Q2. How do you support your colleagues when they make mistakes?
A1. Ts in isolated/unsupported environments can lack self confidence in their practice. Makes it hard to talk about mistakes
A2: I share my failures first. Be honest. Be open.
All T's, S's, Admin should see it.
Q2 first & foremost it's OK to admit your mistake. Humbly apologize then guide them to seek shared leadership for a solution
A2: LISTEN, be truly present, if someone is sharing a mistake, they are opening up & this is an opportunity for growth
A1. Making mistakes is a crucial part of innovation. No mistakes = no risk taking. Our ss need to see us making mistakes too!
New teachers need to hear about the struggle so they don't panic when they feel overwhelmed
That would be a powerful session
Long ago we had powerful speaker come to school w/the message, "Seek the story in the stranger (or friend, colleague)
A2: As principal, I encourage risk taking and therefore there will be mistakes. We reflect and move forward https://t.co/N09UI9Szn1
Q2: Rem, we didn't start out experts. We all make mistakes. We need to learn from each other. That's what we tells our Ss. Right?
A2 Redirect the conversation to "What lesson did we learn from the mistake?" "What is our next step?"
a2. I try to convince them that they are not their mistakes and I assure them that we all make them.
A2 Support them by sharing my experiences. There's nothing more powerful than to share, acknowledge the mistake & move on.
I try to be really open about my mistakes, so that they feel more comfortable with their own.
A2: encourage people when they make mistakes - we need to create cultures where mistakes lead to innovation
A1: Our own ego. Some of us don't want to show off our weaknesses for egotistical reasons.
A2: Listening is just as important. Nothing is better than a conversation showing you support them & are willing to help
A2: Listening, reflecting, processing and sharing feedback (if that is what they are seeking)
A2: The mistake can actually lead 2 organizational learning & become a positive. Highlight it as such.
I think the impetus for the mistake must be considered too; if someone was being apathetic or uninvested, that changes things.
A2: Encouragement: failure is how we learn, right?!
A1: entrenched stigmas, still prevalent 4 walled classroom, , . Here's an article 2 help conquer: https://t.co/mUXKNMtNXd
A2 it depends on mistake. Sometimes peers have to bring mistake to light & have that hard conversation. Others simply how I help?
A2 I try to be available to them. Teaching sometimes seen as the lonely profession. As such, some only go it alone.
we need to celebrate cognitive dissonance more in education
Fear of repercussions! I agree.
A2 I try to look for something positive to say & remind them it is just a learning moment
How I respond to mistakes people on our team make is so important. Have to admit - I make mistakes in this too!
A1: Pride, fear. Socio-political context matters: Mistakes far riskier for people of color, esp. in predominately white spaces.
A2-Ts like Ss need 2 change & grow. Only happens w/ mistakes. Admin should expect mistakes from Ts as long as in good faith w/ Ss.
hi Jason - what's good with you these days?
that's important to make that distinction. Not everyone wants you to "fix" their mistakes.
Right. Why not finding the opportunity to reflect has such a negative consequence on our work!
A2 In our district we embrace 'the messy' & openly talk about failing in the most fantastically ways possible & learning from that
YES I was thinking same thing. Love her Work has helped me so much
A2: We celebrate failure because it is a sign of risk- taking ... which is a sign of awesomeness!
A2 I make sure that I listen to them and help them resolve the issue. Support matters. Caring for them helps people learn and grow.
So true. I tend to make more mistakes b/c I didnt take the time to reflect on the first one
A1) Embarrassment and fear of ridicule keeps us from sharing our our mistakes.
A2: As an admin, making sure Ts know that those minor mistakes will not "define" them and helping them find a path to grow from it
Good morning! This is my first .
A2 This quote shared with me by one of my mentors years ago. When mistakes occur, channel Teddy https://t.co/IS8XIchRMo
A2: Don't dwell on it. Let it go. Giving them the chance to move past it.
A2 Always try to relate and share something I have done. Being supportive and transparent. Very much what I do with Ss.
An important distinction to make. We often know what the prob was, just need a sounding board.
I openly share my mistakes probably with too many.
A2- I try & support colleagues by validating however they're feeling about the mistake & then talking solutions with them.
Q2: During Preplanning this week, we all talked about the value of mistakes and invited each other to make the right # of them.
Tony, Kevin and I work together. It's unfortunate that both of you root for the Mets
A2b: We can only have this open conversation by building relationships first. Build a culture of trust.
A2: I don't react in a negative way. I will support them in any way possible, putting emphasis on process more than outcome.
I agree the reflection piece is huge.
A2 Help him see it's a moment. We learn something useful in every situation if we open ourselves to it.
YES! "But they are MY kids and MY psychological experiments!" https://t.co/xHHcYbAJOf
That's what parents are doing, too wether they realize it or not.
When you can say you were right and I was wrong, you have earned a lot of
You too ! so great to have you and facilitating!
Not admitting a problem quite yet. Actually helping me think about
Q2. Just listen, sometimes we don't want fixes just an ear.
A2. I've found listening and really hearing what people are saying is key.
Great point! https://t.co/bnZqK2nmCL
A1) failure is also enhanced due to the fact that we give predetermined times to when particular skills must be mastered by all.
2A) Recognize they took the risk to begin with AND shared it
listening. Ah, yes. The most underused "tool" sometimes, yet the most important.
Yes...need to listen to see if they want suggestions or just a listening ear
Love how knows that unsolicited advice just makes people mad. We want to be heard, not "fixed."
A2: I 'model' making mistakes regularly...I hope that helps colleagues.
And look to put personalized CPD in place to help with this if necessary
A2:
Listen!
Be approachable.
Model and demonstrate how we ALL make mistakes.
Share examples of mistakes youβve made.
A2. Empathy and problem-solving attitude. All in it together.
A2 Support comes before & after. Available to discuss plans for innovation & adaptations before implementation. Meet to reflect.
A2: can be way to make connections & build relationships, collaborate together towards a solution
Brah, I tell this to my mom ALL the time! https://t.co/F0VxwFuep7
Q2. Just listen, sometimes we don't want fixes just an ear.
I really think we should even share this w/ our parents. Sometimes they r the ones pushing r learners 2 perfection.
A2: That's an interesting question. It depends on the mistake.
What can we say? We are gluten for punishment! LOL! Nice to connect Kevin!
We must have this! Good morning Don, thanks for joining https://t.co/PWPtzA6Z5p
A2 sense of humor is important -- if we can joke about it -- it'sgotta be ok
A2. Also, empathizing. Have we made those same mistakes? But, different than making it about you.
Hi Melissa, how are you? https://t.co/bc7EOLbXjm
A2: through conversation...listen and listen. Only provide suggestions if asked.
I try to create environment where people can reflect on the mistake and learn from it when time is right.
great graphic should be posted in schools more often to shape vision
Something I personally work on-not worrying what others think of me! So true!
A2: Support others & their mistakes by sharing your own stories. They make you real & bring clarity that sky is not falling
Q2) remain calm & reflect talk abt what was good in what happened what 2 keep & what 2 change. Share disappointment but not stress
A2 it can be helpful reminding people about the great discoveries which have occurred due to mistakes
A2: I try to mitigate that b4. I know new initiatives will be messy and let Ts know that is ok
A2: I LISTEN, share my own mishaps/mistakes & remind my Ts/Ss that's how we learn. We learn so much from reflection
A2: let them know that it's ok to make & admit their mistakes. Ppl are afraid of being judged, & therefore don't admit mistakes.
I'd rather see a few mistakes than see everything stagnating
Haha! I'm "the other people"! Good morning Jay!
Is accepting of mistakes? EDUCATION BOARD BLASTS FEDSβ RULES FOR NEW LAW ON ACCOUNTABILITY https://t.co/8ghSqgbzh6
A2. Finally, and on larger scale, building a risk-taking culture. When all make mistakes, they just become part of practice!
A2 Help them flip the fail and see that success is built on failure. Fail, Learn, Renew, Do (FLeRD)
A2: the more experience you have the easier it is to understandβ the mistakes of others
Did I say good morning yet? If not, good morning!
. we use Visible Thinking a lot so you have to leave yourself open to continual learning-mistakes are expected
A2: Find it more difficult to admit mistakes to people you haven't worked with long. Need to know people and build relationshipm
A2 whenever a colleague says "I messed up" begin to work together
hello my friend! Love that you have created that type of environment for those around you!
We need to shift from a culture of judgement to a culture of feedback in order to foster learning.
what are some key ways of ensuring you have actually heard what someone is saying?
Sara from WI joining late. Former 1st grade teacher now Elementary Digital Learning Specialist
As a leader, it's difficult to work with someone who cannot admit a mistake.
Absolutely! Celebrate every attempt to change
So many Ts work for admins who are bosses and not leaders. Singular vision is good, but teachers are experts and know how to work.
yes that is a healthy philosophy that we should have as admins
Q2. who are we but to make s[ort for our neighbor and laugh at them in our turn.
A2:I try to reassure colleagues that making mistakes are valuable learning experiences...when we make an effort to learn from them.
I'm a big fan of encouraging the term resonable risk taking for Ts and Ss in a school environment. https://t.co/iWe0v5YGkD
A2: As principal, I encourage risk taking and therefore there will be mistakes. We reflect and move forward https://t.co/N09UI9Szn1
A2. It's funny. My mistakes destroy me but when my colleagues make mistakes I accentuate what went well and help them move on.
A2, You have to be honest. Tough to do if there is little collaboration & trust. Use this question w/ staff as an opener.
Confirmation and affirmation have places in mistake recognition, reflection and learning
My will be about admitting a failure I had every day and how I want to grow from it
Absolutely, we're all learners. And we all learn at differing rates and in different ways! https://t.co/fMzO0sdbAJ
A1) failure is also enhanced due to the fact that we give predetermined times to when particular skills must be mastered by all.
A2: If 1 person brave enough to step up, more might admit same mistake, collaborate together!
A2 Part 2: I am not privy to the mistakes of my colleagues. And for the reasons we are discussing.
A2 mistakes happen ... Must know in advance that you have their back ... Open door to talk ... Internalizing mistakes is bad
Mets fan=badge of honor we have seen MANY mistakes over years. It builds character in us
Kudos to each and all of you active, involved, committed educators in this morning!
A2: Supporting peers is easy if you have taken time to build relationships. They are foundations for all schools to be built!
I like that a sign of awesomeness!! So going to use this! Thanksπ
agreed, Dennis. Good point.
A2: Last yr at New Teacher Orientation I gave teachers a FREE PASS to give to their Admin. if they made a mistake while taking risk
Itβs taken me many yrs to do this:
SHARE everything!!
The successes AND the failures.
Be transparent and seek out feedback.
This is key!
Mistakes happen, hopefully they lead to progress but won't know unless we move pat it.
https://t.co/MZpuiN2xVi
A2: Don't dwell on it. Let it go. Giving them the chance to move past it.
A2 listen, ask reflective questions, say nothing, share your own story of a mistake, thank them for sharing
how do we decide what our friend/colleague needs in a conversation?
A2 Empathize with them. Encourage, to own. We all make them!
Yes- Hopefully, Ts are learning that it's ok to say, "I don't know. Let's find out." Ss need to see that we're learning too.
Hillary Clinton has raped

point out the mistake discreetly to that colleague, suggest solution or ask if they need help.
A2: In coaching this is a natural part of the process with Ts. Listening, reflecting, processing & revising, normalizes mistakes
A2: I try to remind them that every attempt at something is an iteration. We fail (learn) often to grow https://t.co/ysbX9aDQbn
My PhD was a long series of lessons in hitting problem walls & chipping away until I found a way through, over, under or around.
Thanks, Tony. I try. It's definitely a work in progress.
is now trending in USA, ranking 1
A2) let them know that mistakes and failure are part of the learning process for all.p
A winning combination & necessary to model as often as possible! https://t.co/IWII9DaZwK
A2. Empathy and problem-solving attitude. All in it together.
True. In cases of extreme danger and violence, mistakes take on critical mass.
Q2: Listen and give advice on how to rectify it based on my experience. Try to make it a learning experience
A2. Start with a collaborative culture. Ts who are part of teams can approach failures and find solutions as a team.
Super important to know admin supports!!
Their mistake to you = their success to them! https://t.co/D67eo8DOi4
that's important to make that distinction. Not everyone wants you to "fix" their mistakes.
It's Saturday, I'm sipping coffee and chatting on Twitter βοΈ
When I am open about mistakes I have made re: makerspaces, Ts realize that they can create great spaces too- empowering 4 them
I know you stole that from Andrea, who cant even keep track of your mistakes.
A2. Different types of mistakes we make. Good conversations could come from discussing chart w/ some1 https://t.co/TsVOTGUGGt
Morning!!!! Nice to see you!
A:2 Risk taking cultures depend on how those in authority can view it. Helps to show Ss how 2 take risks. https://t.co/rRX99rm3o4
A2. Finally, and on larger scale, building a risk-taking culture. When all make mistakes, they just become part of practice!
Q3. How do/should we use our mistakes as opportunities to learn and grow?
. Hope all is well with you as you prepare for your new position - so exciting!!
It doesn't work for me all the time, but consciously "turning off" your inner voice helps.
A3: Reflect on what you are learning and treat yourself with loving kindness
A2 Part 3: An admin., however, made a very public error with a colleague several years ago. And people let her know about it.
Yes, this is such an important point Dennis. It is a learning journey!

A2: Last yr at New Teacher Orientation I gave teachers a FREE PASS to give to their Admin. if they made a mistake while taking risk
Truth! https://t.co/z9jvO9VTiC
A2. It's funny. My mistakes destroy me but when my colleagues make mistakes I accentuate what went well and help them move on.
That requires us to stop thinking of how we're going to respond while others are talking. Not easy.
isn't that primarily what we give in school though?
As a first grade teacher, I do TONS of reflecting with students. Kids still need to hear mistakes are ok as they get older
Something I'm sure we all do! Recognizing & admitting this is the first step to treating yourself better! https://t.co/AVzT2XhEom
A2. It's funny. My mistakes destroy me but when my colleagues make mistakes I accentuate what went well and help them move on.
thank you Don! Joe is just jealous that I can use a brush each morning if I want to.

. how are you. Great to see you at . Hope you'll join us Sunday for chat 8:30 AM ET.
that's a great idea -- FREE PASS while risk taking.
Depends on the mistake, though. We shouldn't approach acts of racism with humor. Obviously. https://t.co/7WCNdqKQwA
A2 sense of humor is important -- if we can joke about it -- it'sgotta be ok
A3: Take time for self-reflection...find even a few moments at the end of a busy day at school.
This is tooooo true. We ask others to do what we can't do ourselves.
,those who fail to learn from their mistakes are doomed to repeat them.
funny auto correct "gluten for punishment"
And to give advice on how they might pick themselves back up
A2: I always tell my Ss, " Mistakes are proof we are trying" we need to remember this as Ts too. We're not perfect. learn and grow
A2) Refocus on the growth mindset approach where we learn from mistakes just as we want our Ss to do; help readjust the sails
Processes get us through tough times. Others have been there, learned, can guide us.
https://t.co/dUqes9JjkH
A2: In coaching this is a natural part of the process with Ts. Listening, reflecting, processing & revising, normalizes mistakes
This quote via is SO important...We are human, mistakes are going to happen, it's part of life! https://t.co/Cis3263Sbf
A3 Mindset is HUGELY important. I think it has to do with how we view the mistake in the first place. Failure? or Opportunity?
Attitude is key!!! Also surrounding yourself with positive people and ignoring the negative ones!
A2 Do you have a culture that allows staff to admit they made a mistake? Work on your culture and climate daily!
THIS IS INCREDIBLE AND IMPORTANT! SHOUT IT FROM THE ROOFTOPS AND USE ALL CAPS!!! https://t.co/0ucrv60oOJ
I will be blogging every day. I will admit one mistake and how I will try to learn from it. Self reflect https://t.co/Naf4GF6uZb
Awesome. How are things with you?
A2 is it a mistake? Their mistake to you could be their success to them? What's the "mile in their shoes reference point"?
Also validate after. Pop in and start a convo (or email) with: "So this is what I heard. . . am I with you?"
By being honest and reflective with ourselves about what we can improve on for the benefit of our students and take action.
A3: Reflect, regroup, celebrate and share.

A2: listen w/ intention and celebrate the risk that they took- always look for silver lining. It's all about
A3: By sharing our mistakes! If I screw up & someone else makes same mistake due to lack of sharing, I have failed as an educator.
real growth comes from understanding weaknesses and improving upon them not just showboating your strengths
A3: After failure or mistakes, REFLECT! Check and adjust. Keep trying.
As one of the senior members in dept, I try not to. I don't think I'd made it thru yr 1 w/o a shoulder to cry on.
A3: I learned this from βs The Courage to Teach: You can act like a teacher, or you can be a teacher.
Let your mess become your message to others
A3: model how to handle mistakes to our Ss. Learn with them. Teach Ss how to use mistakes. Show it's ok to say "I don't know!"
A3. Mistakes force me to practice in advance more. Still get to show failure, but less frequently.
A3: The key is reflection - not talked aboutβ enough - the importance of reflecting on what you are learning
Sure, play Cubs up by double digit card LOL But you've seen share of mistakes too
A3 We need to accept that mistakes are part of good teaching (innovation) & to do the hard work of reflecting & adjusting.
A3: Each time we take a risk there is a chance we won't achieve what we want. It's part of our search for greatness
If I have a mindset that believes growth mindset is vital, have I a fixed mindset about growth mindset?
Yes, & yes it is. Changes the relationship. Builds trust .
Q3. Learn from them and grow, it is an immense learning opportunity about ourselves, use it!
RIght. It isn't a risk-taking culture if only some in the community are taking risks.
A3 The convos we have with others abt our struggles are what make reflection stick
A2: remind them it isn't a "mistake" it is an opportunity to try again and we can try together if they want
A3: Take time to reflect on mistakes instead of trying to ignore them.
It's always about the relationships! Now, to get more schools on board with this.....
A3 Stop. Reflect. Let go of the mistake but embrace the learning. https://t.co/WZPpWueRnt
Q3. How do/should we use our mistakes as opportunities to learn and grow?
Absolutely. The modeling has to be top down
Well said. I like the questions: Who & what are you learning for? Self, family, community, school, all, unknown...
A2:Watch, wait and set up conditions for discovery. Support growth beyond mistake w/ learning resources.
A2:Watch, wait and set up conditions for discovery. Support growth beyond mistake w/ learning resources.
Make it about the journey not the destination. Kids talk about the grades, we should ask about the learning.
Much to learn from ed leaders on - Bill, principal from MA
A3: "I get knocked down ... but I get up again. They're never gonna keep me down! ... Danny boy!" ~ Tubthumping ...
experienced the same- sometimes it's hard to appreciate the difficulties of admin and we can expect them to be perfect
Q3: as incentive and motivation to improve, by seeking out input from others and looking for best practices to try.
A3: When a project failed because of the tech tool, I asked students what they wanted since it's about their learning
We have to have an environment where people don't fail, they learn a better way.
I completely agree! Positive company makes it possible to get good things off the ground.
one sure is a heck of a lot messier than the other. Great point.
Sometimes after a mistake, we need time to lick our wounds. Get some sleep and stop obsessing. Then it's time for some reflection.
A3: Mistakes are only failures if you don't do anything to improve.
I'm glad it resonates. It's often how I feel.
A3: Mistakes need to be reflected on to figure out how to proceed next! They are a starting point of effort moving us forward

A3: thoughtful reflection and selection of a path to solution. It's tricky though (1/3)
A3: Itβs important to reflect and move forward, without fear of making more mistakes.
A3. By its nature, a mistake is a learning opportunity. Stop to look at what happened, consider why, and next steps.
This is a great concept to explain to students.
Great way to demonstrate vulnerability & model reflecting on the mistake. What you will do differently. https://t.co/f7WrFCjxje
A2: I 'model' making mistakes regularly...I hope that helps colleagues.
How are you, Stephanie. "move past it". Yes!
A3: Learning from requires reflection on the process and a fearlessness to try a different approach the next time
A3 Reflection for me is 1st. I can't improve if I don't recognize the mistakes.
Yes- it makes you a real person to them.
A3 don't hold your mistakes hostage so you are the only one to learn - share with others and own it
Being transparent about our own mistakes as leaders can have a huge & positive impact on our staff! Same for Ts w/ their students!
Yes! - I learn so much from reflection & it's vital to carve out time to reflect https://t.co/J4FbjMzcTj
A3: Take time for self-reflection...find even a few moments at the end of a busy day at school.
A3: if you can build the mindset that mistakes are steps on path to success then they become just part of the learning process.
A3. Mistakes are also meant to be shared! Bounce what happened off some critical friends. What insight can they provide?
I imagine many were made during your awesome overnight event when students were creating. So cool! https://t.co/LBXqrmWbqI

Real challenge. How does our personal narrative impact our understanding of the narratives around us? https://t.co/OVIJWYCH6l
That requires us to stop thinking of how we're going to respond while others are talking. Not easy.
A3: Not finding the answer the 1st time is part of the learning process, learning is messy.
I see fixed mindset as the belief something is impossible and cannot be done, not something I am passionate about.
A3: instead of beating ourself up over it, we need to analyze it, learn from it, & move on so we can grow https://t.co/W4bupeJwnI
Q3. How do/should we use our mistakes as opportunities to learn and grow?
Itβs about being the same person βon stageβ as you are βbackstage.β Tap in to your true identity!
A3. Oftentimes our mistakes can lead us to opportunities & paths we didn't know existed. "The Obstacle is the Way" via
A2) Understand how failing makes us feel. Help ppl know If you are not making mistakes you are not trying. https://t.co/ZYwiZEpxxh
A3: Think the bigger picture is having a culture of resilience & persistence, not so much a focus on mistakes. Build the culture.

A3.1: have a good mentor or peer to help you unpack your thinking and assist you in next step thinking.
A3 Hopefully mistakes are a signpost for an eventual solution or pointer for improvement. We need to be reflective about our journy
Hi ! Doing great, gearing up again after a summer break. Hope you had a good one! Will try to be there. 1.30am.
Honesty is such a huge part. Especially with personal reflection! Own it, change if needed and move on.
I like that! Maybe "We don't fail, we learn better ways!" I'd put that on my wall. https://t.co/QxjUYJHws1
We have to have an environment where people don't fail, they learn a better way.
LOL! Good eye Don! See, modeling mistakes within the chat!
A3. And remember the power of perspective! What you see as a "bad" mistake, others might see as the missing info needed!

A3 and are perfect examples of this. https://t.co/LQ9zJVNxHE
Q3. How do/should we use our mistakes as opportunities to learn and grow?
A3) Self-reflection--what pieces went right, and how might changes improve the next experience?
A3: I would not be where I am today w/out my countless mistakes! I am the sum of my mistakes & how I have grown from them!
Mistakes are like a puzzle, figure innovative ways to do something different & try again
first the person making the mistake needs to be aware of their mistake. That's the tricky part. (2/3)
I hold quick meetings after every day. I always try to admit my mistake from the day to avoid the elephant in the room
Very true, I have a very hard time with that, but am getting better. https://t.co/SGArmTfMAP
It doesn't work for me all the time, but consciously "turning off" your inner voice helps.
A3: In all learning endeavors, there is the chance of a mistake, mistakes help validate what works and what doesn't it's cyclical
A3 I admit mistakes to my Ss and try to model mature responses to faiilure.
Building and district leaders...if our staff doesn't take risks it's on us. We need to provide the environment where they can.
A3: Mistakes show we are willing to try and make efforts to solve problems when we don't know the answer: Risk taking
Yes . I find that writing it out helps me, & sometimes sharing helps others. I learn so much from others' blogs.
It should be this way, but it isn't always that way. https://t.co/6SI2Qrcjf0
A2. Empathy and problem-solving attitude. All in it together.
good point my friend! We need to have the whole picture.
A3 Be willing to take risks for our kids. Be the teacher that is the first one to say maybe this is best & let me try. Kids notice
A3) We can empower an acceptance of vulnerability in the classroom, through a supportive environment
A3: Good teachers reflect, but that's later. Initially we laugh as a class and scramble to salvage. Not elegant process
I'm trying to work on that. I also agree that it will bring good change and elevate what we can do.
A3 a growth mindset! Positive thinking! Attitude is key!
I love this analogy. Can I steal it?
A3 Use our mistakes to model owning up to them, learning & growing. Best type of teaching
Hey, maybe everyone's title should be "learner" in education!
A3 I think it is good to openly share our errors and what we learned from them
Yup- it wouldn't be a risk, if we knew we would succeed.
Good morning Jumping in late from WI!
It's gives you a chance to go back and look at your planning and rethink how to teach that aspect
A3 Admitting we make mistakes to our students makes us more authentic.
I completely agree! Positive company makes it possible to get good things off the ground. MORE >> https://t.co/1hOhjONSg2
So important that you bring up reflection. I couldn't agree more.
great point. Asking questions first is a great practice. is skilled at this!
A3 lead by example-own mistake, ask for help-model best practice for colleagues & Ss https://t.co/n2EKaAhEzy
Q3. How do/should we use our mistakes as opportunities to learn and grow?
A3: Mistakes are uncovered questions that can transform instruction. What questions do our mistakes need us to ask?
A3: by reflecting critically upon them perhaps in CFG or PLC groups pertains to Domain 3
It's a much more comfortable place to be, don't you think?
A3: Reflection after mistake followed by "What worked? What didn't? How do we(I) do this differently? Is my course (almost daily)
Itβs a great read! I used to read it every August to get my head on straight for the new school year. :-)
A3. Mistakes = inevitable. Important to dx cause: lack of prep, recklessness, or just unanticipated due to inexperience.
Yes! Got to have the vision first.
, I never call them mistakes. I prefer learning opportunities.
Tremendously! But a narrative is never the full story. Sharing narratives helps balance our real/fake sensor!
A3: we have to reflect on our mistakes. Dig deep and define what specifically the mistake was in the event.
A3. I keep a list of my mistakes. I write it all down in my 'Radical Journal of Erroneous Adventures'.
A3: Self-reflect, open and honest dialogue with others to help process and see opportunities to improve.
if there is no awareness of mistakes then it's hard to see the forest from the trees (3/3).
I believe the whole notion of mistakes transcends "trends" like grit & growth mindset; this is about relationships.
A3 Reflecting on why we made the decision then looking at the how it happens gives us a road map. Mistakes are part of the journey.
yes! If i make a mistake i try to do a kind of what can i learn from this "post mortem".
"Those who do not remember the past are condemned to repeat it" George Santyana What happens when we don't learn...
or we could do what said https://t.co/Vw3UMbbUGb
A3) We can empower an acceptance of vulnerability in the classroom, through a supportive environment
A3 it's like we need a toolbox of behaviors to handle mistakes-how to process and learn from them.
A2-An environment without people taking risks & making mistakes is an environment without deep learning taking place.
I think the time we invest upfront in any relationship, initiative, effort makes a positive difference here.
A3. Have to encourage growth, not perfection, in students and staff. Perfectionism is the enemy of creativity.
Our story is never the only one. Multiple stories provide the balance we need.
Cool. We're gearing up for a new year in too. I'm trying busy 24/7 with .
A3: 1st we need to model / admit that we made a mistake & it's ok. Then how did it help get to the correct or better end result.
It's important that administrators & leaders allow staff 2 feel comfortable enough 2 take risks & grow! https://t.co/tvHNHEdl90
Building and district leaders...if our staff doesn't take risks it's on us. We need to provide the environment where they can.
A3 Mistakes need to B shared. If kept quiet, no one else learns from it & the group doesn't collectively get smarter.
A3: Model failure as part of the process. If Ss don't see you practicing what you preach, there's no buy ins. Or relationship.
A2: Play "Keep Moving Forward" - from failing you learn--at least once a year for Ts and S. https://t.co/gT1MPYbf5b
what if that belief comes not from feeling something's impossible but something's not necessary? How would we know diff?
Love this image! Thanks for sharing it.
Great point a learning opportunity is only a mistake if we choose to end there!
Every tech savvy T got that way by jumping in, making a ton of mistakes, and cleaning it up b4 bringing to classroom.
A3: Admit them! People in your building know you screwed up...you know you screwed up...why not just get it out there?
Yes we must allow ourselves that time each day https://t.co/9Irv3723Yx
Yes! - I learn so much from reflection & it's vital to carve out time to reflect https://t.co/J4FbjMzcTj
A3: Take time for self-reflection...find even a few moments at the end of a busy day at school.
But that vulnerability teaches Ss so much in realtime! Invaluable experiences for everyone involved! https://t.co/kqk22ICxN0
A3: Good teachers reflect, but that's later. Initially we laugh as a class and scramble to salvage. Not elegant process
A3: personally, I take a breath, suck it up and keep moving forward. In class we high five, do a pushup, and keep moving forward
Even w/Ss it is possible 2 say "let's learn how to do this together." It's why I say there's no 1 right ans. Ela rocks!
good morning Jay! Thank you for joining us for !
such a great point. A glance at your phone can totally kill the flow of a conversation.
This is spot on. https://t.co/UwVdO7WbYe
A3: Good teachers reflect, but that's later. Initially we laugh as a class and scramble to salvage. Not elegant process
A3: reflect on what worked AND not worked-just bc it was a mistake doesn't mean all was lost Iterate the process w/ lessons learned
https://t.co/YnwPBRTTCb
Another way is to remove distractions. Look away from your computer screen. Look people in the eye.
Love it! RT : A1: People think you need to be perfect. You don't. Mistakes lead to learning. https://t.co/rrCSIPPMAi
Laughter and humor cover a lot of mistakes. My Ss get a thrill out of watching me try and draw during our Geometry unit.
We must be able to put our mistakes in perspective, but it is so easy to get bogged down by the trivial ones.
Loving this morning! Fail forward!
A3 True! Not every mistake should be fixed Some mistakes lead us to empowered practices
This was a microaggression against a African American male colleague. Changed my view of the admin.
Q3. I don't call them mistakes, rather, learning opportunities
A1: our fear that we may not be seen as experts. We fear failure, which then puts limits our successess https://t.co/2bkXkNKSM2
Q1. What do you think it is that keeps us from sharing our mistakes with others?
Agree - brushing them under the carpet & hoping no one notices doesn't lead to growth (or respect)
A3: I had no problem trying out the new Q&A feature on Google Slides during various presentations. Still trying to figure it out!
I learned this idea from you at a conference. Never forgot it. You're a great admin!
LOVE this Diana! Great point!
Interesting idea. :) I think I'd be afraid of how long that list was.
A3. Blogging has helped me record/identify/move on from errors. Brutal but helpful self-assessment --> https://t.co/OVeVH2jM1n
A3 Agree Todd. We need to step back to see how we can do it differently, what supports we need when we err.
. Sometimes our greatest strength is also our greatest weakness.
https://t.co/y4fNWBBAcg
Also validate after. Pop in and start a convo (or email) with: "So this is what I heard. . . am I with you?"
And if Ts don't feel safe, prepare for complacency & no risk-taking because nobody wants to make a mistake!
I will add it to my list. Thanks, Dave.
I dont think we even recognize mistakes as mistakes-it is all just a part of what we do-making, doing, creating..etc
I love this! Good colleagues, spouses, friends push you to challenge yourself!
A3: Shift our focus to the learning PROCESS not just the product. Mindful about our feedback- a conversation rather than 1 way
A3 Good morning to you, too. You and Joe need to be nice to each other. :)
We need to get better at making sure that people who fail (adults and kids) in our schools donβt walk around feeling like failures
A3: Moonshot / Design thinking and prototyping all come from trial and failure. We have to instill persistence in our Ss and focus
A3 Sticking with my "be real" message-sometimes you just have to ask for help. People are happy to help when asked. They really are
A2) I consistently tell everyone I do not believe in mistakes. Everything is a learning experience. No obstacles only opportunities
what if the child has no interest in it?
Joe, most educators take their lead from admin--so typically what admin does, staff does good or bad.
A2 deconstruct and learn together. Keep it light. Share your own experiences.
easier said than done (although I agree completely). It's hard to swallow your pride and admit a mistake. So hard.
Great ex of hard work paying off. For Ss, we need to make the path to success transparent. What were the mistakes?
A3: Deliberately planning collaborative reflection sessions to learn from the mistake. Always reflect & celebrate Ts who take risks
Funny how the knee jerk response begins in childhood & continues into adulthood. How to break this cycle? https://t.co/CeTFJkGRo4
he always starts Jay. I generally ignore it. I have learned from my mistakes. :)
A3: reflection post mistakes: how did this happen, what could I've done differently, etc
A2: Make your mistakes and learn from them , when the stakes are low so that the high stake mistakes become rare
A3: when we allow for those mistakes to be broadcast and seen by others, to truthfully own them is when we all get better
Great perspective! Can we begin to celebrate mistakes? https://t.co/UPgBoMZdoY
A3: Mistakes are uncovered questions that can transform instruction. What questions do our mistakes need us to ask?
I think we all have pockets of fixed mindset. Maybe it's when you say "I can't do this" vs "I don't want to".
Signing off have a great week world class global pln
Yes! Isn't this what we help Ss to build? You have to pay yourself first so ALL can benefit
It's from Design Squad - great website!
A2 Is it easier to admit to people outside of teaching mistakes you've made or is the challenge in admitting them to peers?
yes, everyone needs to have at least ONE person they respect & trust implicitly.
Maintaining that enthusiasm and energy can be difficult! This is the struggle to persevere.
active listening, paraphrasing & good questions can empower people to find own solutions.
A3: 1st reflection is often not zoomed in, i.e. The whole lesson was not a mistake. Just specific parts.
A3 When possible I tell Ss act lesson they think is great & ways it failed before it became one they love. Models creative process
A4: Our actions/inaction serve as models for the Ss. If the Ts environment is punitive then Ss will wall on eggshells
Putting it down on paper is powerful!
This happens and also results in poor models for Ss risk taking, mistakes, and learning.
Love the part about ending. https://t.co/tKjo6MfXfD
Great point a learning opportunity is only a mistake if we choose to end there!
I wonder though, the βpitβ provides the need for the βgrit.β
it's strange...have to use a split screen right?
What's up people? interested in
A3 use them to cultivate optimism and team-sharing-the-weight of it ... mistakes can break a new Ts spirit if they take it hard
This is such a good point. Always model this behaviour, fantastic! https://t.co/nEnG9lNvW1
A3 Use our mistakes to model owning up to them, learning & growing. Best type of teaching
A3-When I have to say "I'm sorry" or admit that I've made a mistake, I go through a deep reflection process that results in growth.
A3 embrace the fail, reflect on the fail, renew your efforts and try it again. Saves you from being on failures critical path.
Yes, yes, yes--that is so true, Sue.
Q4. What can/must we do to help our students worry less about making mistakes?
In the woods of Maine, but I'm at right now! Brian, HS principal from Mass.
Bad habits are hard to break-- esp if perfectionism is the comfort zone!
love stressing true grit and a growth mindset in schools for both Educators and Ss
Q4. What can/must we do to help our students worry less about making mistakes?
Absolutely. It's one of the hardest things to do. We can't expect it from our students if we don't do it. https://t.co/QyW3YD3PaI
easier said than done (although I agree completely). It's hard to swallow your pride and admit a mistake. So hard.
Sent a google form to parents to answer but they received the one they could edit. Working on itπ
Don't judge me by my mistakes; support me through them & support my next steps.
A3: As an author, I always share with students the mistakes that appear in early drafts/almost finished versions of my work.
And I'm guilty of this, and do it too often. Need to become better at being in the conversational moment.
Share the start and end points -where you ended up after learning. Huge!
A3: If you're school has a culture that embraces "mistakes" as opportunities for growth, than sharing them isn't scary
A4: create a culture that embraces innovation and reflection as a constant part of learning and growth.
The processes we use to connect, revise, learn, share ever so important.
Staffrooms can be tough. Some leaders will not lead culture forming there but culture will form one way or another.
Yes! As would say "Trust the process" and repeat! Mistakes are a great part of the process! https://t.co/pizKAF1mPl
I dont think we even recognize mistakes as mistakes-it is all just a part of what we do-making, doing, creating..etc
YES!! Great real life example; modeling the power of mistakes! https://t.co/0S9ca7WQbs
A3: As an author, I always share with students the mistakes that appear in early drafts/almost finished versions of my work.
Q3 Mistakes should foster ideas to do things differently. Otherwise you remain in the state of insanity https://t.co/Cb4vsGi248
So important. Easy to share success- hard to share mistakes. We gain a mutual respect for one another.
A4: First you have to convince the parents that mistakes are ok. Students will worry if there are consequences at home
A4 The simplest answer is having all the in your school read 's !
A2: you are there for support and helping them hopefully learn from it https://t.co/UzzltGEo6b
Q2. How do you support your colleagues when they make mistakes?
Mistakes are part of our journey in getting to the next, better iteration of ourselves!
A4: Make it a part of the class culture. Model by admitting your own mistakes. Show humor when you do, they realize it's ok!
Admitting fault is hard, but it's the first step forward. Great lesson for peeps with "no fault insurance"
Mistakes help us to reflect. Reflection helps us to reframe, rebuild, and try again. https://t.co/TY1HWBw9ms
Q3. How do/should we use our mistakes as opportunities to learn and grow?
Hi. I'm Brand new to this chat. Awesome info flying around at a feverish pace. Loving it! Gracias!
A3: FAIL, they don't call it "first attempt at learning" for nothing, right? Our knowledge expands with every mistake=growth
There is only one thing more painful than learning from experience, and that is not learning from experience.
Archibald MacLeish
One has to be honest about their mistakes. Own it!! Fix it!! Move on!!
Like mistakes,we tend to fall back to processes at times that are less effective.
Yes, the process is what is important.
A4 growth mindset, make our classroom a safe learning environment to encourage risk taking
A4: create a culture where giving up or quitting is not what we do. Provide them with chances to correct their mistakes.
A3 & are key. Be real with coworkers and students. Let them see how you react and recover.
A4 front-load growth mindset thinking!
I made plenty of mistakes as a new admin and that was one of them.
A3: When I make a mistake, I own it, share it with students, and ask, "how could I have handled this differently/better?
A4. We must create safe space for creative risk taking and model strategies for embracing failure as opportunity
A3 Sharing mistakes models a healthy behavior for all learners.
A4: model mistakes, but also teach the power of the word Yet! Let them know it's ok and they will get it! https://t.co/BPnHoOtKzT
Good morning my friend π Having coffee w/ Join us? π
A4: What if we could make it impossible for them to really fail? The whole fail and start all over thing is highly overrated.
Busy as ever, but good busy with . Launching new book today, 1 next month, 1 in October, November...
So, I've never made a mistake. Ever. This is hard to grasp https://t.co/UhyHSK1MIu
Being transparent about our own mistakes as leaders can have a huge & positive impact on our staff! Same for Ts w/ their students!
There's always lots of negative talk about staff rooms--yet wonder where the roots of that come from.
RT A2. Support colleagues mistakes a) model failure b) humor c) privately share d) empathize be team.
A4: By acknowledging & celebrating their mistakes! If we're making mistakes, we are taking risks. That is how we build grit in Ss.
A4. I try to highlight and champion moments when Ss learn from their mistakes and grow from it. They often don't realize they do it
A4: As a math T, I must put more emphasis on the problem solving process, not the solution. https://t.co/mbmtlCEhTT
Right! Who's open-minded enough to dare to consider the stagnation mindset? ;)
A4: Joyously embrace those First Attempts In Learning, and model patience with selves & peers.
I π this! https://t.co/BoxmmCZCU0
A4: Being transparent about our own mistakes serves as model for our Ss, as well as level the playing field-I learn from them daily
A4: remember, students can really take mistakes to heart, we need to reassure them that mistakes are part of life
A4 talk about it! Make it a point of pride to fail and learn from failure
A4 I am constantly pointing out my mistakes; a verbal narrative of what is going on in my head. Disappointment, struggle, learning
If T's don't openly share, discuss, talk, then development doesn't occur.
I love this! Life's a journey and not a destination. And the purpose of education is life!! https://t.co/6ZYNOEjA6b
Great point a learning opportunity is only a mistake if we choose to end there!
A4: Fail fast with them. Shows we are all learning and growing together
I think it's a little tricky. Correct two screens.
A4: Model what we 'preach' with our Ss...show them that making mistakes can really make a difference in learning...for the better.
A4:We need to model and teach Ss how to respond to mistakes. We can even role play so Ss have and example of how to react
A4 Usher in . Accept a challenge, empathize, iterate solutions, & reflect. Glitches are a welcomed part of lrng.
A4 Traditional grading practices hinder students from embracing / learning from their mistakes.
A4:One of the most important things we can do is create a sense of security. Freed to fail = freedom to grow = freedom to thrive.
Did all this talk result from people not wanting workers to gather?
A4. Help Ss fail by a) modeling failure b) assess differently c) encourage shared mistakes/fixes. Always let them save face.
So important for our students to have parents like you!
Good idea. We don't get grades when we are out of school.
Another phrase of progress through the mess to keep in mind: "We're on our way." from Rita Pierson https://t.co/XgQF2AFz7S
my way through was dogged persistence & a systematic, relentless approach to creative problem solving.
A4 We must encourage them to make them as part of the learning process. When we make them we must be transparent and model.
LOL! Good morning my friend. I hear you are pure perfection. reiterated that for me this week!
A4. Owning up to my mistakes to my students has felt honest and a way to model- asking them "HMW make this lesson/project better?"
A4. We must be willing to share ours' with them and we must celebrate risk taking.
A4 Celebrate mistakes as necessary steps along the path to learning.
A4: Make sure they know mistakes are a necessary part of life. And it's okay!
A4 Class/school culture we all make mistakes but will learn from them and try again!
A4: Shift your classroom culture from a grade mindset. Ss won't let go until we do this. Also highlight and celebrate resiliency.
Correct! Needs to improve
I think we are all supportive of innovative mistakes. But are we as supportive of other mistakes kids make over & over? Not so sure
A4 Celebrate the moment and ask what can we learn from this? Focus on the learning not the mistake. https://t.co/rht6VNNV67
Q4. What can/must we do to help our students worry less about making mistakes?
A4. My mistake forgot to include hashtag. π
It's impossible to NOT fail. Failure breeds creativity, production, genius.
Good morning Jay, thanks for joining
Yep! People just want to know you are real and don't sit in an office all day making decisions about them.
A4: the whole reason we have pushed the Maker Mindset within our schools in York & introduced MakerSpaces is to allow kids to fail
downplay the wrong erroneous and build up the positive and help them to find the better path
It's not so much age that makes it easier to admit mistakes, but the maturity that comes from learning what really matters.
A3. Have to cultivate an optimistic culture, in both staff and students. Celebrate effort & risk-taking!
doing well. How about you? Hacking the heck out of education, it seems!
I've been thinking about this stream of consciousness and its positivity and struggle too.
A4: Make our learning steps visible, WHEN students learn that mistakes happen everyday all the time they will see it is ok
A4 Teach students about and help them view mistakes as important steps in the PROCESS toward their goals
A4 Use mistakes as opportunities for growth/understanding! Not opportunities to embarrass!
A4: We have to be real about how rotten it feels to make a mistake. Plan for early successes to build self-efficacy!
A3: Again, it depends on the mistake. But, personal reflection is the starting point, and, then, an apology if necessary.
A4. Working on way to change focus from grades to mastery. Mastery takes time and practice, not a week or two on a unit.
Making that safe space for Ss is important. Hopefully the fear of making a mistake in the first place disappears.
Excited to share some news in the coming days as we continue the conversation! Be on the lookout peeps!
A4 Students need to learn from a young age that making mistakes are okay especially if the learn from the error
Tell students that you aren't perfect. You may make some mistakes along the way. So it's definitely no big deal if they do.
A4 need 2 not have due date stop us from seeing learning has continued. Recognize success/mastery at any point not just date graded
A4 Celebrate their mistakes, encourage them, and join them in their learning, https://t.co/8LkXXNcmMa
Q4. What can/must we do to help our students worry less about making mistakes?
A4: create a culture that embraces innovation and reflection as a constant part of learning and growth.
A4: encourage failure & iteration process w/ Ss -too often Ss work for a gradeπno lessons learned
A4 We do daily, anonymous error analysis in Algebra by discussing S work. What do we see? What do we know? Find and correct for all
A4: As admin and Ts we should model how we grow and learn from mistakes. Shifting our mindset from traditional grading will help
Stop all negative responses to "mistakes" and instead applaud opportunity for creating a teaching/learning moment
Joining in late! Jesse from PA, Jersey T. A4: Ss must be provided opportunity/situation to utilize the learning experience again.
A1 A lot of us are Type A or perfectionists. We want everything to be perfect, esp. with our work.
A4: if we model for them, it will make them for comfortable in taking risks
yes, used it for quite a few yrs myself.
A4: Offer opportunities for iteration, foster persistence, multiple pathways to success, admit our own mis https://t.co/S7UDDKR0Qk
Q4. What can/must we do to help our students worry less about making mistakes?
"I alone lost this battle" Robert E. Lee after Pickett's charge - Leaders need to own mistakes-takes courage
A4: Create system that is not so punitive when Ss make mistakes. Develop grading and reporting system that promotes growth mindset
A4 teach Ss to fail iteratively, quickly so that their failures lead to greater successes. Fail. Learn. Renew. Do. Just FLeRD it!
And kids take the lead from us :)
Have a culture of acceptance in the classroom and enable them to get it right if they have struggled
So very grateful that my admin does this for us. It's necessary if change is desired. https://t.co/I3sgdtnow4
Building and district leaders...if our staff doesn't take risks it's on us. We need to provide the environment where they can.
A4: END the overreaction to mistakes: Point them out and say what should we do next... PUT the RED PEN down
Really excited to hear what you think! Keep in touch with ideas/questions. We're discussing it in today
nice. Thanks for the resource.
Love it!! https://t.co/WRigEL533p
Tell students that you aren't perfect. You may make some mistakes along the way. So it's definitely no big deal if they do.
A4: building relationships, making connections and creating a safe learning environment
A4. But in all seriousness I think we have to feel comfortable saying, "I messed that all up," in front of Ss too.
A4 Show them we love them. https://t.co/m625gYKnyn
Q4. What can/must we do to help our students worry less about making mistakes?
A4: The more naturally a T treats mistakes as part of the learning process, so will Ss, Ss learn resilience form trial and error
Sit beside and with Ss-
Learn immersed with them!
A4: For their teachers to publicly acknowledge their own mistakes. That's a starting point.
Vardy reminding me of my footie skills in -I bet even he could open our roof tent by himself, though- it's childs' play!
I like the idea of assessing differently when it comes to mistakes. We need to explore this!
A4: this is ALL about existing culture in ur school. If u put the time in 2 develop a supportive + kid-first school, ur good 2 go!
you do. Perfection can be so hard... trust me, I know.
A4: My job is to help them find where the error is happening. Looking at their work and giving specific feedback is crucial.
A4: ALLOW RETAKES and REDOES like life does otherwise they have to live in their mistakes
A4: Model how to learn from mistakes by owning your own. We also talk about mistakes through literature as a topic
Thanks, Jon. It wasn't a mistake to join this morning.
Model how you handle mistakes; read LOTS of picture books about growth mindset & and (1/2) https://t.co/cIRajgugoX
Q4. What can/must we do to help our students worry less about making mistakes?
I think I needed age to help me mature! Hahahaha!
modeling life mistakes help kids understand that things don't always go as planned ... You can survive embarrassment
Yes! Think focus on creating openess, collaborative spaces, support in SR can lead to school wide change
Role play and Improv can inject humor into the sometimes too serious reflection process. Good idea.
thank you! Can't wait to back in school so I can play and see how it works when projected on IWB
Yes! We have to not only monitor our words but our body lang & facial expressions https://t.co/cNM7qbKM7t
We have to have an environment where people don't fail, they learn a better way.
A4 Stop building clssrms on the industrial learn-test-learn-test model. Be more experiment, reflect, alter, trial 2 model
Q4. Never embarrass them, let them save face, help them figure out a better answer or path to take.
A4:Culture of How2Learn vs only What2Learn. How2Learn includes learning frm mistakes, resilience.. What2Learn is deficiency model.
A4) Purposefully teach habits of success & growth mindset "I don't know it YET!" Use "famous" people making mistakes as role models
Awesome! Yes, that is busy.
I learned this 1st day of teaching from my principal when I created class chaos in first 15 minutes https://t.co/tVfn4CdRoZ
A4: Create a learning culture like the one we hope to encounter when we are learning something new.
Very true! We want internal, not external motivation. Not sure how to solve this for Ss. How to help them to care.
A4: as a principal, I see it as part of my vocation to let students know they are always cared for no matter what the mistake
A4: S think T are supposed to be perfect, it's really crucial to be transparent and talk about learning experiences: aka mistakes.
A4 definitely embrace a growth mindset with my kids and hug them and tell them it's ok
. We're trying. We have an awesome, ever-growing team. is one of our biggest successes
A4: Iβm reading a lot about self-efficacy lately. Strong self-efficacy can lead to more resilience laterβless worry about mistakes!
I just noticed you were in this chat. Morning!
Look at the growth you have made from it already!! ... ..... https://t.co/ntlWaHUsZy
A4. My mistake forgot to include hashtag. π
Ha. I'm still struggling with it, and I'm not an entirely new admin. :) Lots to work on!
Thanks, Tom, and good morning!
Model-teach them path to growth & innovation only happens through making mistakes & fixing them https://t.co/QE02238Gbs
Q4. What can/must we do to help our students worry less about making mistakes?
A2 The way we view our own mistakes changes the way others see theirs.
I sometimes made mistakes intentionally in class to create teaching moments. I also unintentionally did it.
A4 Have difficult conversations abt our grading practices on r campuses. Ts want 2 focus on learning experience instead of "grade".
right. This requires a deliberate change of habit
A4: Encourage them. Give real and useful feedback. Let them know that the magic happens outside of their comfort zone!
Yeah. So how do we empower Ss to work towards THEIR why, not OURS?
Always! I randomly show up at school with boxes of coffee. Come on over.
A4: talk about mistakes, make it a natural part of every experience
For sure. Lots of great ways to show hearing/understanding in the words we use.
Me too, but I know many ppl (much older than myself) who still don't get it!
A4: Tell stories about mistakes. Make failure--and how we overcame or grew-- part the lore we share in schools.
A mistake will define you only if you do nothing about it. Teach kids grit, reinforce behaviors that demonstrate perseverance.
A4: Model , admit our own mistakes, show vulnerability - this goes a long way w/ Ts & Ss
Form deeper relationships, model and trust. Also good to be there for them if it gets a little messy emotionally. My 5 cents.
What's the deal with ? Could somebody fill me in, because I'd like to know!
A4: Always stay engaged with your students - unconditional support
A4: Do this, and also do not grade everything! Give feedback only, so to help them succeed the next time. https://t.co/yfh3k2l4Ra
A4) Purposefully teach habits of success & growth mindset "I don't know it YET!" Use "famous" people making mistakes as role models
We can make learning more about the process than the product; I think that will empower our kids to accept & navigate mistakes.
I like the "recover" part of this. That's huge. https://t.co/rplViJRRAo
A3 & are key. Be real with coworkers and students. Let them see how you react and recover.
A4 Yes, taking the time to coach Ss around mistakes is ever so powerful for T and Ss.
Absolutely! Too many of our kiddos are walking around afraid to put themselves out there because they fear failing
A4: failure cannot have a negative connotation anymore! Real learning comes from trial, failure and solutions
A4-Model risk taking&mistake making&the reflective growth process involved. Then utilize an activity for students to experience it.
A4: Fall flat on your face. Laugh. Stand up. Try again.
A4:help them see that mistakes are part of growth and don't define them as Ss.Create environment in CR of risk taking and model it!
A4: Always felt that making my own mistakes allowed Ss to feel more confident when they made mistakes https://t.co/YeA7TI2WN0
Q4. What can/must we do to help our students worry less about making mistakes?
A4: Modeling actions after our own mistakes is good. Also like to refer to this chart from . https://t.co/Y95i9xWcxw
I love discussing growth mindset with Ss has excellent resources for this.
A4 we need to call out our mistakes so they see we do fail sometimes. I also have them tell me in a kind way that i have made one
A3: don't grade everything critically for perfection. Let the process be part of the grade. Also consider mastery style grading.
I realized that I say "my bad" a lot, my kids started saying it too. Not intentional, but funny.
maybe we just let them. get out of their way.
A4 help students think through the process to find their potholes to avoid in the future.
thank you Jake for the shout out! and I had a blast writing it!
A4: (2/2) instead of punishing our st who make mistakes, help them learn from them. Use mistake/bad choice as a teachable moment
Thanks! It's never good for teachers to act like they are some kind of perfect superhero.
create and foster a supportive environment in the classroom - refuse to accept shaming/snark by classmates.
YES! Giving a grade almost always STOPS learning. Giving feedback can catapult Ss to the next step.
If assess Ss by asking them what Qs they have or allowing them to share their mistaken assumptions, what do Ss learn?
Are we learning how to get there? Mastering the journey is sometimes more important than destination
I love this !!!! https://t.co/BxEbrL3Ilf
Q2: we have a Spectacular Failure Award that we give to folks on occasion when they are willing to share a mistake w colleagues.
A4: 1-Build individual relationships, 2-Classroom culture of trust, 3-Open-ended questions 4-Reteach errors not mistakes
Possibly. Cliques count for a lot. Put 100 individuals into a room without shared vision & can fragment
A3a) Experimentation needs to be encouraged & rewarded, setbacks are vital keys, unlock door to breakthrough ideas and innovation
A4: mistakes made by students allows an opening for understanding and discourseβ
A4: If you don't have trust; your efforts will https://t.co/qEjQhyAchp in the classroom is crucial. Relationships matter
A4 Be advocate for 2nd chances, 3rd chances etc.
It took me 10 years to figure out that having 35 grades in the gradebook meant nothing about student learning
absolutely. Own it indeed. Helps staff feel more comfortable taking risks.
A4. As far as my students are concerned, the view I emphasize is mistakes happen, let's learn from them.
I agree Stephanie. I love watching their eyes light up as they think of the possibility.
Need to get rid of us and them- we learn. Use all methods and tools available. Be eclectic.
Some of my biggest mistakes as an educator have come from my reactions to those around me. React less, think more!
We share best 5% of r lives on social media. But we judge 100% of r lives based on the best 5% of everyone else's life.
Humor - our family award that we laugh about and reflect on. It travels... unfortunately it's on my dresser https://t.co/Fap9s0awJ6
Yes! By admitting when we messed up, Ss see that we all do it.This is empowering & motivating for them! https://t.co/O1AeJ0gy0S
A4 we need to call out our mistakes so they see we do fail sometimes. I also have them tell me in a kind way that i have made one
markbarnes19: JasonFlom Awesome. How are things with you?
markbarnes19: .EoinLenihan how are you. Great to see you at . Hope you'll join us Sunday for chat 8:30 AM ET.
markbarnes19: melsa777 Cool. We're gearing up for a new year in too. I'm trying busy 24/7 with .
markbarnes19: MsClassNSession How are you, Stephanie. "move past it". Yes!
I create lots of resources for class. I used to stress making them perfect but the mistakes = conversations https://t.co/ZUoAOkORXj
I sometimes made mistakes intentionally in class to create teaching moments. I also unintentionally did it.
I agree! It's all about relationships. Creating an environment where Ss feel safe is the number one goal! https://t.co/1b7PpWRmyq
A4. We must create safe space for creative risk taking and model strategies for embracing failure as opportunity
markbarnes19: gphilhower It's impossible to NOT fail. Failure breeds creativity, production, genius.
There is almost nothing more endearing than AUTHENTICITY. Transparency about our mistakes makes us genuine ... Makes us REAL!
A4:Foster an environment where the class celebrates mistakes and encourages growth from the mistake.
Here, here !!!! https://t.co/Ip59flPGES
We can make learning more about the process than the product; I think that will empower our kids to accept & navigate mistakes.
A4: Feedback is the key, is it judgmental (a grade) or constructive (where we should go next)
hugs often help, good morning Vicki https://t.co/28aHtFpASL
A4 definitely embrace a growth mindset with my kids and hug them and tell them it's ok
A4: Ts need to celebrate effort and attempts at learning, making the fails and successes things to learn form and grow through
A4:Make mistakes in front of them, celebrate it, rethink it, and have them help you grow...always high-five
LOL!! Love that my friend! Thank you for sharing.
yes. I would get so embarrassed in school which prevented me from asking important questions. This is so important
A4 When we make mistakes as Ts in front of the Ss, and let them know it's ok, they feel more empowered to try
Q5. What is a great idea you've implemented as a result of a mistake?
A4 Using news stories about mistakes gone wrong or right also a powerful way to teach.
what's up? It's been a while.
A4: discuss our mistakes with them. It's okay/necesarry to correct their mistakes but make it a learning process.
yes. Over time, with training & practice, coaching becomes a way of being.
A4 School needs 2 B about learning & not a false presentation of knowledge like often is the result of traditional grades
A3 One moment last year that I shared w/Ss at assemblies was when I applied for something-didn't get it-& how it made me stronger.
A4: Do your actions meet your words? Do you give them chances to improve or just throw a number on it and move on?
Do it all the time! And they know even if I messed up, I will work hard to fix it. https://t.co/QGLr345G7O
A4. But in all seriousness I think we have to feel comfortable saying, "I messed that all up," in front of Ss too.
A4 as a school leader you have to let your self make mistakes and those that work with you do so too. Modeling this helps Ss
A4 let Ss know that learning is a journey and mistakes are just the odd wrong turns - that often provide other opps!
. Vunerable = trust = relationship = safe to risk = make mistake(s) = learning π
and that goes a long way towards community values - breaking bread together
A4. Teacher/principal language can send a huge message about our views on mistakes in the learning process.
. Imagine a school website dedicated to posting its mistakes--and how they got fixed. Imagine THAT!
We need to build a reporting system that supports this and inform all stake holders about the shift and why
A4a I teach Ss to celebrate failures b/c they are truely opportunities. Classroom=safe place to fail.
I agree, Leslie, teaches Ss that no one knows all and that we're working together as learners.
Welcoming their voices in helping us see our own mistakes is definitely helpful.
A4: Students must now that mistakes are welcomed. One way to show this is by letting them improve their grade on an assignment
Love this and borrowing it! What is celebrated becomes duplicated.
A4:Never allowing others or ourselves to embarrass students for making mistakes
We can & should model resilience for our students. Overcoming adversity reviled our true character https://t.co/XoUDBL8E73
it's tricky, as leaders we are balancing relationships and events right in front of us and from afar
Thanks for the resource ! I'll check it out π
YES!! Powerful word! Sets the expectation that they will get there.
Q5. What is a great idea you've implemented as a result of a mistake?
A4: Establish positive relationships with them so that theyβre not afraid to fail when theyβre with you
A4: Help them work through it without judging them for it.
Our impulse is to react immediately (emotionally). Take a moment (or ten) to process before responding. https://t.co/PXM21QNfm9
Some of my biggest mistakes as an educator have come from my reactions to those around me. React less, think more!
So grateful to have joined this am. Starting a new position at a new school in a new town! Mistakes, here I come!!
that is a great point; leaders are balancing a lot! But, so are teachers w/ their kids!
it's all in the teachable moment - few mistakes are unrecoverable
A4: Feedback it key but giving a grade ends the journey for many Ss. .I know this now what is next. Don't give grade, give feedback
Would that include your reactions with ? https://t.co/M9Vbu3lRZd
Some of my biggest mistakes as an educator have come from my reactions to those around me. React less, think more!
Sometimes we're thinking too much, too often. At times we would benefit from being in the moment.
"You only get one chance to make a first impression." How will our first meeting with teachers, with kids look this year?
A4: I think it's also important 2 say when U don't know something. Be transparent. Say "Let's learn together"-even w/adult learners
A4. I learned a mistake song in pre-k, "Everyone makes mistakes oh yes they do, your sister & your brother and your dad and mom too.
Think about it. How many times have you said, "I made a mistake"? It's the 1st step to change.
Daily goal and long term goal setting- conversation to get there. Ss and Ts
A5: Allowing myself the permission to leave some groups that just can't learn
Of course we have to be ok with admitting fault. Mistakes are human. Forward thinking is character. Build yours!
A4) by creating an environment where we call attn to our mistakes and how we learned from them
As a tech integration person, I want teachers to go Formative, Formative, Formative assessment. Build kids, don't tear them down
And I learn in the process too! Kids are so smart.
Absolutely! (Good morning by the way!)
A4: Ts need to think about the language they use when talking to Ss about their mistakes!
A5. I began asking for help in areas where I needed instead of thinking that I had to be an expert in everything.
A3 Great example, Brian, Leads to connection between responsible risk, mistake making, learning, and reseliency.
A5: I moved to SB grading and less homework due to mistakes: Class is now less judgement more learning
A4 I always let me Ss know that is alright to make mistakes that is how we learn and grow.
Excellent! Powerful assessment!
Q5 Is tough, interested to read what everyone offers here on this one.
"At risk" districts are often so closely scrutinized for "failing" students that they have no room for mistakes.
So true! Sometimes mistakes lead to better things
A5: Daily quick AM staff meetings to review previous day & agenda for today bc I love feedback & input from staff!
Excellent, next they don't get something they will know they are in good company https://t.co/7aoEHXldH9
A3 One moment last year that I shared w/Ss at assemblies was when I applied for something-didn't get it-& how it made me stronger.
ββNon-Originalsβ Expect a Miracleβ We need to allow autonomy and risk taking to move forward. https://t.co/EL1wX1oIuq
A5: Advice I was given in my first year of teaching: βDonβt smile βtil Christmas.β Worst. Advice. Ever. https://t.co/1DGFMuBcH2
THIS ===> React less, think more! I definitely can benefit from this mantra. Thanks ! https://t.co/NCzGOnRg1u
Some of my biggest mistakes as an educator have come from my reactions to those around me. React less, think more!
Don't call them mistakes? Maybe call them attempts?
Let me know when you figure that one out. Could use that in all aspects of my life :)
A5: More student autonomy. My way didnβt work, so it just made sense to give the students the power to shape the lesson
A4: Redoing assignments to improve (aka demonstrate learning) is how my classroom runs. Puts kids in charge.
We need to honor "learning from mistakes" For I provide feedback for as many drafts as Ss wants until they call it final.
Yes, & Ts tshould be able to laugh at themselves so Ss can too. Model that mistakes aren't the end of the world.
A4. Clearly I believed it, so making mistakes didn't feel threatening. Everyone did it! Taught my kids the song.
I am also always amazed at Ss intelligence, insight, openness, and creativity.
