A1: Fear of the unknown, fear of working with someone who they feel is +/- them.
things are great. You? :)
Thanks. I am excited to participate.
A1. PEER PRESSURE - something everyone has to deal with โ even adults. Do You Agree?
So glad you're here tonight!
Laura , Ohio teacher . Hello all!
Happy Thursday & chat. So excited to be here . Leigh, from MO. HS Assistant Principal! Excited!!!
Hi, Carol ELA Consultant from Long Island here to chat.
A1: Can be complicated to work w/ peers if they're uncomfortable together and don't trust. Hard to share ideas and thoughts.
A1 Sometimes they annoy each other or they struggle with listening to each others' ideas.
A1: Kindergarten is working on MANY things. Just being around each other is new for many.
A1: Often times empathy, understanding and sharing feelings/emotions of peers can be difficult for Ss when interacting.
A1 For grade 6, social interactions can turn hurtful ๐ข collaboration takes WORK for Ss and grown ups!
A1: My daughter doesn't really have any issues, O/T being intimidated by some peers, but I taught her to stand her ground.
That is huge with middle school Ss https://t.co/VYsqJT5qEL
A1. PEER PRESSURE - something everyone has to deal with โ even adults. Do You Agree?
markbarnes19: Can't think of anything more important than helping kids love . What about you? https://t.co/qmFTM9WnlI
a1 can they just be nice to each other ...
A1: Fear that they won't measure up the other person's perception.
Glad to see you two tonight facilitating
A1 Some Ss face fear of not knowing, thus don't interact , others don't know how to discuss, some too shy, some too bossy
A1. I work for D75 in NYC with children with autism. Kids in my school have trouble making eye contact and some are non verbal
A1: In 1st I see a lot of just lacking how to have true conversation. There is more talking & less listening & empathy.
A1: Fear that the other student isn't on the same social level that they are.
A1 I've seen Ss fear of being wrong. They are ashamed of sharing info that they think could be wrong.
Hey there Leigh -> Welcome to
big hello from the other side. Appreciate the welcome!
A1: I agree w/--as well as understanding what constitutes positive/productive interactions
A1 Knowing how many times it is appropriate to participate in different classroom settings.
Building a positive classroom culture is very important!
Hi
Carl from Avonsleigh Australia
A1: Fear of taking a risk and not succeeding in front of their peers.
MS is crazy time for self-discovery -1min gossiping next BFFS - Trust to be themselves is challenge! https://t.co/zrloRTnENv
So glad you are here Adina!
We work on that a lot in Kindergarten. How to listen to your partner is something we work on all year.
sometimes the one they THINK is smarter, whether true or not
A1 4 Ss to interact collaboratively w peers, a culture of trust must be established.
Right on Jennifer! How frequent?
Hey Carol, nice to see you here ๐
A1) Biggest problem involves keeping up appearances with peers.
So glad to be here. One of my favorite chats of the week!
A1 Still as a college S, I get that fear sometimes of being in groups. I've tried so hard to not have it but it's tough
A1 - Many do not have the self-confidence needed to take a risk or be themselves.
Hi, Spiri. We move in the same circles which is great!
A1: Fear of working with others they are not comfortable around, They struggle with truly listening to others, then responding
usually just a perception. I try to quell that from day1.Smartest person in the room is the room!(That includes me)
we're so delighted you are here Leigh ->
A1.Insecurity and lack of confidence. But that was me when I was their age
That's why I'm so passionate about morning meetings. They really set the tone for the classroom.
one of the biggest successes we can have as teachers is getting them to jump in-oh that feeling!
So glad you are with us Alejandro!
Ouch... that can hurt. How commonplace is this?
Okay I am trying to be a part of things tonight. Just me, Amy no Lori, one teacher on the edge.
A1 For us it's often poverty, the haves and have nots, some of which changes on the dime.
A1 We should first let Ss know that there is no such thing as being dumb. Everyone has their own opinion. Teach respect
A2. Sometimes the best way to handle issues among peers if to Teach Them Problem Solvingโฆ have you tried?
A1 That is why a culture of trust and positive engagement must be established & continued as new Ss come.
Lack of empathy and how to find common ground hurts student interactions. https://t.co/FvOKh2tRRU
A1: Often times empathy, understanding and sharing feelings/emotions of peers can be difficult for Ss when interacting.
Yes it is HUGE... how do you handle?
Hey Carl ๐ Hope all is well, feeling better?
A1: If they are a S who doesn't have the same tech/resources available at home they may feel they can't contribute.
Hi, Barbara from Long Island...
A1: I've also had the problem of some taking over while others are content to sit back & go along for the ride. No .
He's nice -> sometimes... but always on
A1: They want to fit in with their classmates, being in the "in crowd."
I teach gifted students and make social/emotional skills and issues a daily part of the curriculum
Hello everyone! 3rd grade teacher in Atlanta.
A1 We need to consider how to welcome each S & invite them to community of learners.
I hate that thing where you try and talk one on one with a S and they keep looking at their peers for reassurance
A1- There has to be trust & the knowledge that others will not laugh at ur ideas. So sharing & cooperation can work.
i have found many smart athletic boys will act out instead of answering questions to keep up appearances
hooray for collaboration... an example of how you do it in your classroom?
A1: Lack of soft skills often can cause miscommunication or lack of trust.
A1) We often see struggles w/ working collaboratively, listening to others POV, + accepting feedback. https://t.co/sRILqPFKPf
A1: They are concerned about being judged for not having the "right answer"
If they are not given opportunities to practice collaboration, they may not know how to react. https://t.co/Kmu3LUbSum
A1: Fear of working with others they are not comfortable around, They struggle with truly listening to others, then responding
Jen from IN popping in!... A1 Ss struggle listening and being open to other ideas
A2: Helps to create norms for group work and refer to them continuously/debrief w/Ss +'s/-'s
A1: When someone is married to their idea and doesn't see added value of new member's opinions.
A1- I try to encourage indiv. strengths to make each Ss feel like a valuable part of the team.
A1: the issue I've seen, as a parent, is when a child is bullied there's not much effort on the teacher's behalf to quell it.
Science Technology Engineering Arts and Maths being taught as one subject with no books or whiteboards
Today was a fabulous day ๐
Hey there Paige -- like that approach ALL ARE NEWCOMERS... how's that working for you? Students?
Great point! True for a lot of Ss. https://t.co/tA9iIeFmal
A1.Insecurity and lack of confidence. But that was me when I was their age
A1: General embarrassment of home life, lack of experience or knowledge, appearance, & self confidence.
A1 In our case its relative geographic isolation from where we are located with other schools
I agree, many of the smarter kids in a class have a hard time relinquishing control to allow peers to hv voices
A1: Being different - culture, academics, social economic status etc.. Ss just want to find a sense of belonging.
โNone of us is as smart as all of usโ โ Kenneth H. Blanchard
A1: In mixed groups: girls working, boys watching. Often it's because the girls won't let the boys draw or write!
And it's a real battle to build up that respect and rapport so they acknowledge you as worthy of being listened to
Robbie from ATL dropping in w Middle School perspective
yep... that's certainly a reason to be concerned.
Yes, all the new students are in my class. :) Teach them routines & expectations ASAP.
Hi both of you, currently teaching in classroom in rural South Taranaki, NZ, its Friday AM ...
A2- knowing your Ss helps to facilitate projects. You have to watch with careful eyes to know who will & will not work well.
Glad to be here, I teach high school Business and College readiness.
A1. Biggest issue I see if seeing where they fit in. Who will their friends be? Who will not be their friend?
I completely agree! Important that soft skills are explicitly taught and practiced to help students succeed!
Yes, and give permission to figure it out - reinvent when needed - take risks - Create that culture. https://t.co/9k0EKorbqa
A1 Agree! Teasing is cruel and can lead to uncomfortable classrm situations.
There are good/bad days, depends how many new students I have on my caseload TBH.
A2: I explain that even adults have problems working and the importance of open communication.
Right on Eric... universal concerns about 'getting along with others'
Greet them at the door Carol. This sets such a positive tone!!! https://t.co/t12rePyCbQ
A1 We need to consider how to welcome each S & invite them to community of learners.
Absolutely. I have heard that mantra for decades and it works.
A2: Set the tone from day 1. Model failing forward, seeking advice and learning of your own. Walk the walk!
A1 Students don't know how 2 engage in discussion. Listening to other POVs. Knowing it's ok 2 disagree but not argue
Teasing comes in varying degrees...Some would argue it's a right of passage...just saying ๐
A2: Provide lots of informal as well as formal ways for them to interact. A quick turn and talk can be a great way to start.
ha, ha... keeping up appearances is a faulty illusion...
A2: our classroom needs to be mirrors of our Ss - BOOKS are a wonderful mirrors/windows to other perspectives.
A1: Sense of belonging is HUGE! Kids WANT to fit in. It does't have to be the "in crowd", but "a crowd" that they feel safe
A2: Weaving SEL into curriculum, modeling, & encouraging collaboration on a regular basis assists w/ pos. peer interactions.
A2. Be sensitiveโฆ oftentimes, students who are experiencing issues are unsure of themselves.
Always be willing & happy for all of the interactions daily will set a tone of acceptance Ss nee.
Something that we need to model and work together on for sure! https://t.co/8jAfJUOdSn
A1: Can be complicated to work w/ peers if they're uncomfortable together and don't trust. Hard to share ideas and thoughts.
A2b: For group work, I spend a lot of time on teaching how to communicate within groups and conflict resolution.
We are doing building-wide design challenges so that all Ss get the chance to work in diverse groups.
A2. Giving Ss voice & choice. Some may not want to share out loud. How to respond, providing e-method of communicating helps.
it can come down to differences in work ethic & standards. I struggle to work in groups at Uni. I hate it to be honest!
A2: Reinforcing that the smartst person in the room is the room. It's not me, it's not any 1 of them. We are in this together
A2:We read a variety of character books and have discussions/journal and share with the class how we feel.Collaboration is key
I like that-saw a Chelsea Handler interview where she said, "Npo need to be jealous, there is room for you too"
Ouch... that can hurt (on so many levels)...
A2: It's important for students to respect each other teach them we all have a voice
A2 Help 1st by getting to know each other. In order to be comfortable & successful, you have to know your peers.
A2: Encourage students, truly believe in them, be the person that they are excited to see every day
A2: Its all about the relationship that you establish with the students, parents and community.
A2: I tell my daughter that if another kid bothers her to say, "Stop ___! don't say/do that!" and to give a tap back if needed
Miscommunication can be a big one...especially if social media is being used.
A2: I frequently assign groups so Ss work w/others who are not necessarily friends. Helps to support positive clsrm culture
I believe that it is the simplest task. As educators, we should be ensuring that our students learn self-esteem
A2: Showing that you are willing to take risks, include people and seek out other opinions/ideas is crucial.
A2: I have a group participation rubric which I use to pre-teach, and then post-teach.
A2 Coming together as a group & just chat together about how they're feeling or their goals they want to accomplish.
A2: Don't let other influence your decisions. Be you!
when in doubt... move forward, correct?
A2: Learn about them as an individual. Ask questions that matter & are meaningful to them
A2: Model in a teachable moment & give them options in how to interact (pass pencil, everyone shares 1 thing first, etc)
I would say it takes a good month for them to realize we are equals! Last sem the "smart" group had redo task
A2 - Provide many opportunities to collaborate & connect in a safe environment where they feel safe and not judged.
A2. being honest with them encourages them to be honest with you. Then you can help them solve the issues they are having
A2 talk about the difference between fair and equal, showmanship and grace, and speak about caring about humanity on the whole
A2: Little things go a long way sometimes, make everyone comfortable, remind them of what is truly important and expected
Welcome Myles... are you bringing your A-game to students this morning?
A2 Be genuine and understanding as issues develop but before that build a foundation of caring and trust.
YES community mtgs are important! An honest venue to discuss community issues. https://t.co/5tTaoZ6FlV
A2 Coming together as a group & just chat together about how they're feeling or their goals they want to accomplish.
Q2: Embrace all cultures in the classroom and model equal respect towards others despite our differences
A2) Start early! Ss see positive ways to interact with others. Lots of modeling + opps for collab https://t.co/AbnOr3ju1r
A2: Showing that you are willing to be inclusive and "the more the merrier" outlook is contagious.
A1: 6th grade Ss have issues with physical and social maturity levels being vastly different
Lucky them, good for you...
A2: Morning meetings. We talk about how we feel, how we help others. Each gets to be heard. All involved.
A2 I was part of "Literacy circles". You're in a group & discuss about a certain topic. Much powerful then doing it alone
A2) Develop a relationship. Make it acceptable to interact with you. This involves a BIG investment from the T but pays off
A2: Reinforcing + behavior; willing to admit when you make a mistake and owning up to your faults.
Open eyes, open hearts...
A2 Collaborative protocols help with the building of trust and friendliness.
A2) Morning meeting discussions, literature, share stories, Ss really respond to personal stories https://t.co/mV19Gzoc5n
Modeling is a great suggestion. https://t.co/FJ7YDVjBXo
A2: Showing that you are willing to take risks, include people and seek out other opinions/ideas is crucial.
Show ur human side, show Ss it is okay to try even if it doesn't work the 1st time, that is learning https://t.co/CkwvFqgS2L
A2: Model in a teachable moment & give them options in how to interact (pass pencil, everyone shares 1 thing first, etc)
In group wkr - self-assessment - what do individuals knw. + collaboration / - less disenfranchisement. https://t.co/5feUG7v8U6
agree-usually try to admit I don't know everything, pull a "whayt dont you look up the answer for us" moments
A2: If you aren't willing to model the behavior you are seeking, you are dead in the water from day one.
A2. Ss work in small groups Ts work W/ on eye contact. 4 Ss who are nonverbal Assistive comm devices like ipads are paramount
so powerful... get good results?
A2: LISTEN TO THEM
LISTEN TO THEM
Hey everyone - Sarah from Raleigh,NC - late joining the conversation
however very excited in two weeks - I will be in Singapore during and seeing
Yep. Walk that walk.
It's what earns respect https://t.co/TG5DH23H9p
A2: Set the tone from day 1. Model failing forward, seeking advice and learning of your own. Walk the walk!
A2 Teaching your child the rules of proper behavior is essential, Sean.
A2: Just give lots of opportunities to learn and grow! Experience is always a great teacher! Much needed, too!
Great ideas! https://t.co/fsL2tFDVpf
A2: Model in a teachable moment & give them options in how to interact (pass pencil, everyone shares 1 thing first, etc)
A2- be sure to notice & praise even the smallest positive interactions
What are you referring to when you say soft skills?
THIS!!! Seeking and honoring will pay dividends in ways you can't even imagine! https://t.co/EsSTyZaBdT
A2: LISTEN TO THEM
LISTEN TO THEM
Excellent way to start the day... good for you (and students).
you are so right! I wish I could get them to see that!
Showing them that THEY matter more than US teachers. At the end of the day, it's all about the THEM https://t.co/sf57PKVmWK
A2: Encourage students, truly believe in them, be the person that they are excited to see every day
A2: I tell my daughter it doesn't matter what her friends think, she can be/do what she wants. Instilling confidence early!
people skills, ability to work with others, using your filter, etc.
And some think teasing is a way of expressing love
A2 and change up the groups so students understand how to interact with others.
This can be a real issue. Was almost my answser for Q1 as well. Modeling meaningful conversations is useful!
A2 Agree-model the behavior!
Yes, definitely! Good point!
Treat the kids with respect, have their backs, be real with them - they model what they see. https://t.co/5feUG7v8U6
it makes a difference. She has to know she shouldn't have to be pushed around.
So true that the basics that we may take for granted can be helpful in making Ss relax. https://t.co/KkHbYEVO8T
A2: Little things go a long way sometimes, make everyone comfortable, remind them of what is truly important and expected
A2. Role play difficult group situations at beginning of year can help. Have students model right & wrong ways to interact!
it is ALL about them. Once they realize that, the sky is the limit
A2- Set up reluctant learners with success in your group work so they become the genius gradually. Kids notice, believe me.
A2 Post accountable talk phrases above whiteboard. Introduce 1 at a time. Model it, practice it, praise it, reward it.
This is where classroom culture comes into play!
Welcome Sarah... thanks for joining the fun
is now trending in USA, ranking 44
A2b: Teach students how to treat each other. Social emotional learning is very important esp for trauma affected students.
A2: Creating an environment where everyone is able to showcase their talents and feel important.
is HUGE. It is THEIR school. Why aren't they creating the culture that they see the need for :)
A2 Kagan has some awesome cooperative learning strategies that will change your whole classroom environment and culture.
I have my Ss sign contracts agreeing to these protocols. I teach how to do group mediation https://t.co/exXY0WfzhT
A2 Collaborative protocols help with the building of trust and friendliness.
So true! https://t.co/17i9Z2XH5D
A2: If you aren't willing to model the behavior you are seeking, you are dead in the water from day one.
A2: Establish trust & following through. If you say it, you better deliver
And when you mess up - act on it so Ss can see:
- you care
- what to do when they mess up
I want to be a student in Theresa's classroom ->
Sounds as though building a positive classroom culture is key to many issues that arise!
Books are such a great way for kids to get involved and share experiences.
It saddens me when Ss say they've never been asked their opinion about something.
Our students in K are learning collaboration skills through program centered around .
A2: I also believe it's all about relationships & creating a classroom culture where ALL contributions r considered valuable!
YES! Share your stories...So important!!!! https://t.co/2fP8sBekCB
A2: I explain that even adults have problems working and the importance of open communication.
Worst one ... some believe Ss ask for it... Ugh! 'tbully https://t.co/puu8oBZguU
Teasing comes in varying degrees...Some would argue it's a right of passage...just saying ๐
A2 When there is a disagreement, I sit down w/ the group, have them talk through their disagreements, and offer suggestions.
I agree. If is wasn't for our students, we wouldn't be here!
Just let things fall into place my love ๐
Excellent example of PLN POWER in action happening here ->
A2) I begin with one rule NO LYING otherwise convo/prob solv cannot happen
Q2: How do you help your students solve these issues / problems?
Agree being able to laugh gives confidence to S when taking risks themselves
You got it right, Vincent. I hope all is well.
Q2. I start w shared plan for Ss to log and track their tone in each class. https://t.co/8fcIj9By0c They love it and so do I!
I couldn't agree more! Teachers inspire, motivate, & ignite the passion for learning.
Relationships are at the heart of all that we do. https://t.co/MisB1OkqFw
A2: I also believe it's all about relationships & creating a classroom culture where ALL contributions r considered valuable!
A2 cooperative learning is the best! And I split up the "smart" kids. put a reluctant learner with a high flyer & then jigsaw
Hi Will be intermittent today. Brain fog.
We are laughing together abt something boneheaded I did, or me tripping over something everyday! https://t.co/qX1gC9gcZS
Agree being able to laugh gives confidence to S when taking risks themselves
A3- If you always model & teach tolerance this is not an issue. Working together as a team in my class sets the bar high.
Great! Grow from there ->
RT Q3: How do you help your Ss work well w/ people of different beliefs, cultures, & backgrounds? https://t.co/KP6W4kMATl
A3. Perhaps, make different beliefs, cultures and backgrounds the norm not the exception.
A2 I've seen a great teacher handle a situation ss not wanting to work with another simply explaining we do not exclude here
A2. While brainstorming with a group, encourage Ss to come up with the silliest ideas & have Ss practice supporting them.
A2 pt 2 that reluctant learner leaves w/confidence & tells others what he/she knows-amazing to watch
Totally agree -relationships underpin everything https://t.co/4FkgnYgpes
A2: I also believe it's all about relationships & creating a classroom culture where ALL contributions r considered valuable!
A2: Lead by EXAMPLE & model the behaviors, actions, & words you want to see.
sign me up.... cookies? Nap time?
Thanks, Mark. Sean and I have been Twitter friends. is
There's no greater feeling than seeing them SHINE & us being there to support them๐๐ป
A3: EMPATHY is key to this one!
Yes. Everybody has a strength. We celebrate each one and help them own it.
A3: Important to model all opinions are valued. Reinforce it's okay to agree to disagree. Socratic seminar is great for this!
A3: Having opportunities to work together often or volunteer to help together is key!
Great advice here... https://t.co/wVuZ7DeM2u
Absolutely. Be open, ready, willing to try, be friendly, engaging, and trustworthy & Ss will feel the authenticity & take risks.
A2: Students must form a sense of resilience. They can also learn forms of empathy
A2: Ts need to explain to Ss that feelings/conflict are normal. how we act upon feeling/conflict is key 2 successful community
A3: Exposure
Experience
Conversation
Student Voice
RESPECT
awesome! Do I win a prize?
twitter magic happening here ->
constantly learning myself-I sit in lit circles & act like a S-what did you think? why? hadn't thought of that??
A3: Celebrating that our differences make us better. We are better together is cliche, but so true.
Hi everyone Glenn from Michigan running late
We also need to show students how to politely disagree and give critical feedback without offending peers.
So important to be real and authentic as an educator.
A3: To quote the song I was just listening to "always stay humble and kind"
A3 It's all about establishing classrm norms & protocols to create a climate of trust & appreciation of each other.
Well then, Myles... perhaps the S-game (aka student focus)???
YAAAASSSS!!!Greatest feeling in the world for sure !
A2) Key is empathy, ask Ss to walk in others shoes, see it from others angle, had S w/cancer we learned a lot from him
A3: This concept also should be supported on a school-wide level via character ed, advisory, PBIS, etc.
A3, Teaching empathy through examples, stories. Called 1 S a bully for what s/he said & everyone was surprised. Effective.
A2: Have to be careful not to overexpect from high achievers too. They're oft under immense self pressure to perform. Balance
A3: Model that you are inclusive and seeking to work with those that are not reflections of yourself.
A3: We do school wide character lessons. Helps open dialogue and provide common language when communicating.
When we collaborate via we have students assess their own learning and effort collaborating
A3: Give Ss windows & mirrors. Ss need opportunities to work cooperatively & w/ multiple perspectives. https://t.co/HTHGp6ksP4
A3 Help of teaching them to be themselves and respectful. Once you build that, you'll be able to trust.
A3: All opinions and beliefs matter whether you agree or disagree, learn from others ideas/beliefs and build relationships
A3: My daughter's already surrounded by kids from diff. backgrounds and it doesn't even make her flinch. She's open to it all.
A3 All the ingredients to let rise as a collective body.
A3- My Ss laugh at my mistakes & notice I didn't die bc of them. I teach them it is ok to make mistakes but to keep trying.
A3: Let Ss present their different cultures in class Educate each other!
A3:teach them to value all humans & respect is a #1 rule. All valued, all respected. Then Ss feel more comfortable to collaborate.
What Mary said and with bells on it! https://t.co/vlu2jPo4dr
Relationships are at the heart of all that we do. https://t.co/MisB1OkqFw
A2: I also believe it's all about relationships & creating a classroom culture where ALL contributions r considered valuable!
A3. teaching mutual respect is step1. having understanding of other cultures+beliefs is 2nd. people fear what they dont know
As well as educators getting to know their Ss :)
Its a balancing act like teaching and life in general. Always playing catch up
especially if the subject of the teasing is something affirmed at home.
awesome advice! Teaching students equality and love!
A3: Providing opportunities that foster the need to work together to make something better than anyone could do themselves.
Be sure that students know that no ones opinion is more "right" or better than their peers. Every1 is equal in the classroom
A2 - set expectations - model and practice. review expectations - model and practice, REPEAT model and practice ๐
Exposed! ... nap time was painful for me. My mind was too active.
A3- We help our Ss by shining a light on the different cultures we are surrounded by everyday. Celebrate diversity in schools
A3 - Design culture that recognizes differences & Ts must model acceptance for all. This is a nonnegotiable in the schoolhouse
Make the students feel like what they have to show and say MATTERS! Be a role model.
still on question 1. I teach grade 3. Besides for typical challenges like cliquishness, Ss don't have matured self confidence.
Absolutely!!! It starts with them. They hold the power of change.
A2 Provided an environment in the classroom where they feel safe to ask for help, voice opinions and share thoughts.
Congratulation Sean... tomorrow you are in charge of the twitterverse!
A3: Have them talk about their backgrounds celebrate their individuality through out the year
