#langchat Archive

#LangChat is dedicated to the discussion of topics associated with issues and trends in world language instruction and learning. Educators, administrators, learners, and aficionados of world languages are encouraged to participate and share their experiences and input on various topics such as new ways to teach vocabulary, using music in the language classroom, and making standards-based grading valid. This chat is also unique in that it brings together language educators worldwide and from different contexts (elementary, secondary, higher education, etc.) and languages.

A3 IPA for level 1. level 2 & 3 will test in any skills they haven't yet met level in #langchat
  • MmeBlouwolff Apr 19 @ 8:34 PM EDT
A3 May the #langchat G-ds strike me down, but I enjoy the final exam! We do it IPA style with a TALK conversation for interpersonal. Gives my MS Ss a real sense of purpose in late June (end of year NOT in sight here!).
  • SenorG Apr 19 @ 8:34 PM EDT
Been lovely amigos but gotta get dinner done b4 wifey returns from HOA meeting. Muah!!! #langchat
  • VTracy7 Apr 19 @ 8:34 PM EDT
A3: So happy that I can test modes of communication for my final. #langchat
  • MisClasesLocas Apr 19 @ 8:34 PM EDT
Same! I am glad I can just use end of unit assessments without having a specific final #langchat
  • SECottrell Apr 19 @ 8:34 PM EDT
A3 I can't handle doing full-out PBLL every semester unit but our last 2 meetings have evolved to usually be 1) conversation circles with my adaptation on the TALK rubric: https://t.co/H5z7z9lRhw #langchat
  • PRHSspanish Apr 19 @ 8:34 PM EDT
    #langchat | Q3!! Sigh - the obligatory final!
  • mdh755 Apr 19 @ 8:34 PM EDT
A3: Create a final project that uses a lot of the skills student learned & practiced over the semester, rather than a formal exam #langchat
  • profeashley Apr 19 @ 8:35 PM EDT
Ugh I missed it! Mostly... checking in now. Vacation has me very confused on what day it is... #langchat
  • CatherineKU72 Apr 19 @ 8:35 PM EDT
A3 #langchat Not obligatory for us, But: We have our school lunch presentation + reading/speaking/listening IPA choice boards in Fr2. Sts choose 2-3 skills they are best at and a level they want to demonstrate. Choose your own adventure.
  • SECottrell Apr 19 @ 8:35 PM EDT
A3 and 2, presentation of whatever project they've been working on throughout the semester, this time trip itineraries. Example: https://t.co/WI02s93vR6 #langchat
  • MlleCooper Apr 19 @ 8:35 PM EDT
A3 i try to make the review for the final exam really fun so that the students are able to sit still for the final #langchat
  • SenorG Apr 19 @ 8:35 PM EDT
off-topic: in case anyone can find it helpful, here's a post on the value of "building up" to a finale instead of "counting down" https://t.co/kIBwfr2AuK #langchat
  • windycitysenora Apr 19 @ 8:35 PM EDT
Valerie from Chicago popping in late--I was voting for our Local School Council! I teach elementary and middle school Spanish in Montessori #langchat
  • FontaineAlec Apr 19 @ 8:35 PM EDT
A3 since I'm an intern and tomorrow is my last day, I do not have to worry about the final exam. However, in the years to come I plan on having the test before finals to reduce total stress for the students and me #langchat
  • sr_connolly Apr 19 @ 8:35 PM EDT
A3. We have exams at midterm but not at the end. Opens up many possibilities for projects, post-script units, reflection. #langchat
  • SECottrell Apr 19 @ 8:36 PM EDT
That was me even in a formal school setting, I "cheated" and gave what I want and called it the "final." #langchat
    In reply to @MisClasesLocas
  • MadameCPascack Apr 19 @ 8:36 PM EDT
#langchat Q3 Our finals are not obligatory. Hon IV, Level V and AP typically have a culminating project.
  • MmeCarbonneau Apr 19 @ 8:36 PM EDT
A3 #langchat NO FINAL just a final spontaneous writing and speaking piece compared to the first ones of the year in a reflective and growth mindset activity highlighting strengths. Literally. And a letter of intro to the HS teacher.
  • profeashley Apr 19 @ 8:37 PM EDT
  • madamednmichael Apr 19 @ 8:37 PM EDT
A3 Also, I used to do a portfolio for a final and loved it. Became burdensome when I became itinerate, so I stopped. #langchat
  • MmeBlouwolff Apr 19 @ 8:37 PM EDT
That Ss write in TL to the teacher? #langchat
    In reply to @MmeCarbonneau
  • sr_connolly Apr 19 @ 8:37 PM EDT
Don’t you sometimes wish you could have the review week without the exam? I do! #langchat
    In reply to @SenorG
  • profeashley Apr 19 @ 8:37 PM EDT
We do portfolios (speaking and writing focus) and students reflect on growth. No big tests or final exams. #langchat
  • lushluxe Apr 19 @ 8:37 PM EDT
A3 I do a final IPA with the interpersonal & presentational parts before the official final exam period. During that time, they do an interpretive reading with more multiple choice & t/f sections to let me handle the quick grading turnaround. #langchat
  • CatherineKU72 Apr 19 @ 8:37 PM EDT
A3 #langchat We don’t finish until June 18th, so some time to demonstrate growth. But we don’t start until September ;)
  • windycitysenora Apr 19 @ 8:38 PM EDT
A3: We don't have a final(thank goodness!) Just end of unit assessments, same as the rest of the year. #langchat
  • profeashley Apr 19 @ 8:38 PM EDT
No worries that I was late @MmeCarbonneau has most of what I would've contributed covered! #langchat

  • madamednmichael Apr 19 @ 8:39 PM EDT
I always give my IPA early, too, and leave the official exam time for either speaking or makeup exams and feedback. we don't fit in a traditional 2 hour exam period! #langchat
    In reply to @lushluxe
  • PRHSspanish Apr 19 @ 8:40 PM EDT
Omg. I’m so inspired by all the people who don’t have obligatory final exams!! And jealous. #langchat
  • SenorG Apr 19 @ 8:40 PM EDT
Selfishly, absolutely. And while I might not be in love with the *meaning* of a final, it can be the most cherished of meaningful feedback for Students and parents so I'll respect and value that #langchat
    In reply to @sr_connolly
  • SECottrell Apr 19 @ 8:40 PM EDT
Hey welcome! Late #langchat is still the best PD around :)
    In reply to @profewhitcomb
  • CatherineKU72 Apr 19 @ 8:40 PM EDT
I won’t name, but the trainers today at Dual Language Workshop said that WL programs are grammar-based, vocab list classes. Our answers tonight indicate major shift in assessment. #langchat
  • senoritabekah Apr 19 @ 8:40 PM EDT
A3 Students also love having it before finals so they can focus on studying for EOG's and have one less class to "worry" about! #langchat

  • SenorSouderSHS Apr 19 @ 8:40 PM EDT
A3. My idea this year is to get Ss input on the kind of real life tasks that address the modes of communication they should do instead of traditional test. #langchat
  • SECottrell Apr 19 @ 8:40 PM EDT
Will they not even let you design it yourself? #langchat
    In reply to @PRHSspanish
  • Profe_Truhe Apr 19 @ 8:40 PM EDT
A3: Our midterm and finals are made by the county (which is a crazy different style than what I do.) I use https://t.co/ByRLFEmmu7 to make tests in a similar format, and then we can review the questions that gave them trouble #langchat
  • MmeCarbonneau Apr 19 @ 8:41 PM EDT
#langchat Yes! They also make a short video presentation. She sends one down for them to read and one to watch prior to them doing it. She also has access to their E-Portfolios and collection of spontaneous writes/speaking pieces too.

A4 Fluency counts aka quick writes. Ss write 2/unit so 8/year, track # sentences & vocab. words, keep in folder in class, reflect on them. #langchat
  • Profe_Truhe Apr 19 @ 8:43 PM EDT

  • windycitysenora Apr 19 @ 8:43 PM EDT
A4: I have ss keep an envelope with their assessments for the unit/cycle in the back of their class notebooks, then take them out when filing out their self evaluation. This is an area I'd like to improve. #langchat
  • sr_connolly Apr 19 @ 8:44 PM EDT
I’m not looking for less work or feedback, just more flexibility in time and outcome. Review then project, publication, presentation, podcast. Increasingly I’m interested in ways I can share feedback and the final product. Can’t do that with an exam. #langchat
    In reply to @SenorG

A4 At the beginning of the semester, I gave my students a check-point test, the students took that same assessment a few weeks ago and were able compare their results! #langchat
  • madamednmichael Apr 19 @ 8:44 PM EDT
A4 I am scheming of some sort of Can-Dos work à la @SraSpanglish and her Puedos to accomplish this (insert witch cackle here) #langchat
  • MmeCarbonneau Apr 19 @ 8:44 PM EDT
A4 part 1 #langchat Thanks to what I learned @profeashley 's e-portfolio and feedback workshops, I have students do 3 spontaneous, unannounced no note writes and speaking pieces. Stds compare them using an awesome form which allows them to highlight (literally) growth.
  • keith_guarino Apr 19 @ 8:45 PM EDT
    Hey Glenny!! #langchat

A4 part 2 #langchat THEN, students use a form I adapted from @MmeBlouwolff that has them relflecting on progress and proficiency, setting goals and even writing their own report card comment. BIG BLOG POST coming soon, promise! Oh and I highlight where glow and need to grow too.
  • MlleCooper Apr 19 @ 8:47 PM EDT
A4: I actually would love some ideas about how to do this because i feel like students need to see their progress in order to feel sucessful #langchat
  • senoritabekah Apr 19 @ 8:47 PM EDT
YES! And it also gave me an idea of what I was doing right/wrong as a teacher, and as an intern..#langchat
    In reply to @MmeLowdermilk
  • FontaineAlec Apr 19 @ 8:47 PM EDT
A4 the beginning of every class, we have an open conversation where they greet me and then I ask them questions about their lives. as we've progressed, we have been able to lengthen this portion of class because the students are more comfortable and know more vocab #langchat
  • lushluxe Apr 19 @ 8:47 PM EDT
A4 I wish I had gotten into @Flipgrid at the beginning of the yr instead of last week because that would be so great to use as a proficiency measure for them. They do keep all work in their own folders, so they will reflect upon written work & interpretive tasks #langchat
  • windycitysenora Apr 19 @ 8:47 PM EDT
