#HipHopEd Chat is a weekly cyber cypher (chat) where stakeholders within Hip-Hop and Education come together to discuss issues that impact the youth and adults within our local, national and global communities. #HipHopEd Chat is a virtual form of professional development for Educators, workshop for Parents and other Adults and a brainstorming session of Hip-Hop practitioners. Our #HipHopEd chats are every Tuesday from 9-10 EST. on Twitter.
Welcome 2 #HipHopEd tonight we are discussing how our community can actively support our youth as they embark on the #MarchForOurLives and other acts of awareness and activism
What are the lessons from past movements our students need to learn as they formulate what activism will look like for them in the 21st Century? #hiphoped
Family engagement is an important approach to supporting our students. There is information that we can make sure their parents are aware of as their children march and demonstrate across the country #HipHopEd
We as adults have to give the youth the tools they need to accomplish the job. You can’t change a tire with a hammer and you can’t change the nation without education or support #HipHopEd

My school had about 85% of Students walk out of class last week to protest for #GunReform...supporting that move on their part was a no brainer #HipHopEd
If you haven't created sincere relationships with your students before, trying to converse and advise them will be a challenge because there isn't a real sense of trust #hiphoped
Many times activism is told from a perspective that does not explore the brutality that participants in the movement endured. Introduce students to @repjohnlewis & explore his story #HipHopEd
One way to support your students is to actually be present with them as they demonstrate and engage with those in authority about their issues and possible solutions #HipHopEd

Truth! We def should highlight the sacrifices of legends like @repjohnlewis & juxtapose them with modern day figures like #Kaliefbrowder & the #CP5 among others #HipHopEd

Several folks asked me why we “let Ss” walk out last week... my comment: how could we NOT! As a school focused on equity, access and activism it wasn’t even a hesitation. #HipHopEd
We can also have students research news reports from times of activism - Civil Rights, Women's Rights, protests of war - to see how the story was being told to those living at the time & explore how those stories influence our thinking about those events today #HipHopEd
Important to note what/how/who are our students “sampling” when it comes to activism. How far back & where are they getting lessons & inspiration from? #HipHopEd
We have to be honest with our students as to how their characters will be challenged and assassinated as they become a voice that challenges the systems and powers that be. #hiphoped
Authenticity in relationships is central to building trust with our students. Building those relationships has to start on day 1 and it has to be an intentional process. It also involves being as transparent as possible and sometimes vulnerable. Not easy to do but necessary.
Right now!...
2night's #HipHopEd chat supports the #MarchforOurLives movement. 2day, a school shooting occurred in MD, which is the 19th school shooting incident this year. We'll discuss logical/plausible solution ideas & support system ideas for inside & outside of the classroom.
As we seek to support students by helping them “count the costs” we must do the same. What are we willing to lose as individuals for the advancement of the whole and for what is right? #HipHopEd
Help Ss build skills like public speaking, digital poster creation, understanding of the legal system to be more confident and prepared for activism. #HipHopEd
Too many of us are intimidated by our Ss emotions so we keep our classes sterile and void of controversy and challenging content. Take off the kid gloves and mix it up with them. They crave and can handle more than we give them credit for #HipHopEd
It is easy to say what the right thing to do is, it is easy to send a tweet or a Facebook post, but we have to be willing to take action, to take risks if we want to disrupt the system #HipHopEd
#HipHopEd Teachers please follow @MrSmithInspires because he is an awesome educator and I have had the pleasure of visiting his class twice and have had rich dialogue with his students every time

One can't expect action centered students when you've never even let them explore what action looks like conceptually, organizationally, economically, goal development, etc. So many elements to sustained resistance - analyze this in your content! #hiphoped
Most students have to do a certain amount of community service hours in order to graduate. Help them design community service projects that advance their causes and address the issues they select in their communities #hiphoped
I've said this before: Risk has to be proportional to the level of privilege. For teachers, that means leveraging your power to really advocate for and amplify what students are doing. #hiphoped
It is easy to say what the right thing to do is, it is easy to send a tweet or a Facebook post, but we have to be willing to take action, to take risks if we want to disrupt the system #HipHopEd
I've had students develop infographics in mathematics, creating visual representations of data. Use this process with students to help them learn how to inform to back up their stance with facts! #HipHopEd
Gun control would be a great discussion in the classroom, especially in classrooms in which many of our kids witness violence on the regular. #hiphoped
You have to very honest with your students. You may have students who are already in the "system" whose acts of civil disobedience will be treated differently than the same act by students who have clean records #hiphoped
Time to reflect, remember, and regroup: The Assemble Activation Club uses conductive thread to stitch panels for a quilt to commemorate this week’s historic #NationalSchoolWalkout
Some schools weren't even in favor of #students walking out last week and actually disciplined them so I can't imagine them supporting a protest directly related to the school itself! #HipHopEd
“According to this article in the Harvard Review of Latin America...” Seniors develop stakeholder maps to gain a nuanced understanding of the issues affecting teens in Latin America & the Caribbean.

Provide opportunities 4 students to lead. The more they practice, fail & learn from ventures the better they’ll become in leading movements in the best interest of peers. #HipHopEd
Right! We have to be willing to listen to student voices. It starts in classrooms, how many teachers are willing to listen when students speak up against the curriculum or their approach? #HipHopEd
There are tons of examples of student & youth led movements from around the world. Great opportunity to teach intersectionality from a global perspective. #hiphoped
Important to note what/how/who are our students “sampling” when it comes to activism. How far back & where are they getting lessons & inspiration from? #HipHopEd
Many youth feel their lives are threatened & we rightfully #MarchForOurLives w/ them. Some have life but their freedom is threatened. We silence them #HipHopEd
Especially because what students are dealing with impacts all of us and, most definitely, the decisions we as adults make impact students. We're all equal stakeholders. #hiphoped
For Teachers who have students of color you can’t avoid the issue of race surrounding the stark differences to gun violence in predominantly white high schools in any town USA vs. the violence in their schools and hoods #HipHopEd

We must have a clear understanding of youth empowerment looks like. When we see our students using the tools we have provided, we should not stifle their actions and opinions. #HipHopEd
I think it's naive to think that students aren't triggered right now. The question has to be how are schools teaching students to cope? How are we using those critical convos to work thru trauma? #hiphoped
Yes! Collecting & creatively presenting data in ways that even a 6 grader understands the relevance & significance is key 4 advocacy & change. #HipHopEd#hiphopdev
We must all be on the same page about what youth empowerment looks like. First and foremost, youth empowerment is shaped by the youth. As educators we need to ask ourselves what support looks like. #HipHopEd
The bigger issue is preparing teachers to create a spaces within their classroom and curriculum for young people to interrogate the issues at root of youth led marches #HipHopEd
Unfortunately gun violence is a family reality for many of the youth we serve in @AAMAOUSD but all to often their zip code or skin color doesn't warrant national news. Its normalized but not normal. I want to see all the youth who stood up keep standing when its US.
#HipHopEd
Student-led protests to ask for clarification after the murder of #JorgeYJavier at Tec de Monterrey were very different from those allowed inside the university. #hiphopedmx#hiphoped#balaceratec
@elonuniversity is pretty much student run and student-led. Has it’s pros and cons but overall it’s a winning strategy and the resources support student autonomy. #HipHopEd
Allowing students to become activist in schools via curriculum gives them a voice. Teachers are trained to silence students. Students are trained to be docile. This has to change. #HipHopEd
We must be willing to advocate on behalf of our students to other adults even at the risk of relationships and how we are viewed. We can’t be silent while adults attack our students #HipHopEd
SOMEBODY ANSWER THIS MAN'S QUESTION!!!!!!
Sorry. I'm a little fired up after my #BU503 class tonight. We talked about 1. what it means to be a cultural straddler or mainstreamer and 2. the painful data re: wealth distribution in Boston. #HipHopEd cc: @prudencelcarter
HipHop is the perfect tool to encourage and inspire young people to become activist. HipHop began as a social justice movement for people of color in the Bronx who felt that their voices weren't privileged. #HipHopEd

Interesting question. My response is most likely not because many of them create and are silent even when the injustices are clear & evident. #HipHopEd
Early hip hop contended with violence that was worse than this. By far. Transformation happens when we embrace and engage would-be shooters. That's what happened in South Bronx. Scary kid gets positive attention, not time in windowless room #HipHopEd
Who else feels at the point where being in the system as an educator means we are participants in an abusive system? Is activism a way to create a new education paradigm where everyone has a voice? #hiphoped

With regard to the OG post, it’s safe to say that some of our elders are most likely tired, suffering from trauma and things they’ve seen and experienced, and might not have much left to give. We need to be empathetic towards them too. #HipHopEd
Hip hops roots are resistance coupled with strategic, youth centric activism. Capoeira for example was a martial art form that influenced bboy. Students can reconnect with that spirit given opportunities in classrm. #hiphoped
My moms generation were the ones who grew up with hip hop activist like Public Enemy, NWA, and Queen Latifah. They rallied downtown for education, now parents are silent still traumatized and afraid of the education system #HipHopEd
A culture that we have to continually fight for to be respected in academic spaces will always be the voice of the disenfranchised and therefore the voice of “the people” We Are #HipHopEd
I can literally see this integrated within a social studies/history curriculum implemented in schools worldwide... #youthledactivism#HipHopEd#hiphopdev
Yes! But there's also more info thrown from every direction.Within having so much at our disposal, research is imperative.Ppl tend 2 get lost in"alternative facts".Need to ensure teaching is accurate & 2day's youth r learning how to properly go about independent research #HipHopEd
We can use design thinking to have a clear picture not only what we are fighting for and against; but what we are working towards and what does success actually look like #HipHopEd
Even if your school isn’t supportive of activism there’s ways you can inspire your students. Put it in your history classes, bring up poverty statistics in math, have them write letters to congress in English #HipHopEd
Teaching is a form of activism and we need to fight harder and give our kids something to fight fot. Working in a system where structures, practices and policies institutionalize issues, it's important to remember that we may be able to uproot the problem. #HipHopEd
We must challenge the notion of “Make America Great Again” with “Make America What It’s Never Been” ... a country that honors the words of its own creed #HipHopEd
