Welcome to #edtechchat! Please introduce yourself and from where you’re joining us! Tonight's topic: How can #edtech help students develop communication skills?
@MattMAttacks aka Matt Murphy aka Educational Designer for Zorbits Math Adventure on the mic again this week. Can't wait to use tech to communicate about how tech supports communication #edtechchat#metachat
Welcome to #edtechchat! Please introduce yourself and from where you’re joining us! Tonight's topic: How can #edtech help students develop communication skills?
Hi my name is Tedi Ramberg. I’m a senior elementary education major at Concordia College in Moorhead! Super excited for tonight’s chat🤗 #CCED336#Edtechchat
A1 digital is the platform of today’s communication. While face to face won’t go away, good digital communication skills and know what tool to use when will serve our Ss for THEIR future #edtechchat
A1. A large percentage of their communications as they grow up and integrate into society will be through technology. You learn to swim in water, you learn to skate on ice, you should learn to communicate through communication technology #edtechchat
A1. This could be seen a few different ways. Are we talking #edtech to help adapt for students with varied needs? Teaching students how to communicate with digital media? Or using platforms like social media to encourage student voice? #edtechchat
I think it's important to use #edtech to help students develop communication skills because kids need to be very communicative as they grow older. Communication skills will get you far in life and it's very important to learn the importance at a young age. #edtechchat
A1 - The world is no longer limited to primarily the people you can physically interact with. Many of their future (and current) colleagues, friends, and family will be communicated w/primarily via tech. Need to develop good #digcit skills early. #edtechchat
A1 - Communications skills are essential as our Ss begin their development in the workplace. #edtech tools better support the 21st century skills Ss will need to be successful. It's easy to sit behind a keyboard but speaking skills are essential. #edtechchat
A1- it’s important to teach Ss skills that they will need “IRL.” Who still uses paper or F2F discussion as their only ways to communicate? We all use text, email, Skype, etc. and Ss need to understand the idiosyncrasies of communication through tech #edtechchat
A1. It is important to develop digitally knowledgeable students as it provides a way for students to practice interacting without all of the awkwardness that can come from a social situation. #edtechchat
A1 because being able to explain your process is a 22nd century skill. The next innovators have to sell their idea and explain how it is useful. #EdTechChat
The digital tools can support improved face to face communications as well. We have to leverage the use of the tech to support better F2F communications. #edtechchat
A1 I'm a Tech coach in a Middle School setting ss have their phones attached to their arms we have to use technology to keep them engaged and prepared to communicate globally #edtechchat
A1) Its a way to give them voice. All you have to do is look at the adults on an airplane or any other large venue. They are all glued to their phones #edtechchat
A1: Effective communication is a life and job skill - electronic communication is part of that and important in the “real world.” Many jobs depend on it. #edtechchat
I think it is important to use #edtech because there are so many different tools out there that can be individualized for each student to help them to develop their skills. #Edtechchat
Excellent point. Being able to think about what you want to say and edit yourself is a great comfort to many. Can be a great way to ensure clarity in your messaging as well. #edtechchat
A1: Communicating in digital spaces can be very different than F2F - without body language words can be misinterpreted. Important for kids to understand this! #edtechchat
#edtech for communication ... because kids would not understand what this is ... heck they probably have a difficult time with identifying paper #edtechchat
A1- also, teaching communication skills in any form is vital for future success, and #edtech offers innovative and diverse ways to accomplish that. We should give Ss whatever is necessary for them to successfully communicate #edtechchat
I have been spending the last few months studying open learning spaces like #IndieWeb and #ds106 the best spaces make no distinction between the online and off. #edtechchat
I have been spending the last few months studying open learning spaces like #IndieWeb and #ds106 the best spaces make no distinction between the online and off. #edtechchat (https://t.co/jziU7EZh5I)
#edtech is the new medium... every type has its own protocols and lingo. With that in mind have to know how to communicate on a professional level when needed #edtechchat
21st-century skills are certainly unrepresented in many curricula. Integrating edtech into a blended approach is a great way to develop these skills as a "side-effect" of the core learning (although I dont love calling it a side-effect...thoughts?) #edtechchat
I believe in some instances many of today's Ss struggle in both arenas. It's very easy to sit behind a keyboard & tap the keys to express yourself. However, understanding how to put the statements into an understandable format is one thing.... cont #edtechchat
Three people attend a meeting, and walk out with four different interpretations of what was discussed. Digital followup is great for reconciling and reinforcing the discussion. #EdTechChat
A1: Students are already using edtech to communicate in good and bad ways. We need to teach them to harness the power for positive and for their future. #edtechchat
A1: #edtech is the modern version of the pencil. Teaching students to communicate and share with current tools is part of modern digital literacy. #edtechchat
...the ability to convert the written word into a spoken format is a completely different challenge. Students need both sets of skills to be effective in their future positions within the workplace. #edtechchat
A1: developing communicative skills using technology is crucial since there are very complex situations that could emerge in online environments that won’t easily happen in face to face contexts. These skills are needed to be fostered in the 21st Century. #edtechchat
We talk so much of academic vocabulary and disciplinary literacies influenced by enculturation research of anthropology but we don't layer in networks enough. Most of knowledge is really deeper access to more networks in way #edtechchat (https://t.co/VtXT6QsGlA)
A2 Tracking the spread of a message through the use of social media and reporting back is a great way to show the reach of digital communication. #edtechchat
A1: we need to teach our Ss communication code switching! How to communicate effectively across different types of media=> digitally, face to face, on mobile devices. #edtechchat
A2 have students write tutorials about what they create. Love using @instructables for this. Hey educators did you know you can get a free account? #edtechchat
A1 what’s exceptable shortcuts in a text, tweet, or email are very different: teaching our students etiquette of online communication will help them go from being digital natives chatting with friends to digital leaders chatting with professionals across the globe #edtechchat
A2- not a classroom project, but a personal one: my 8 yr old has Messenger for Kids and I work with her to send meaningful messages to relatives when opportunity arises. Teach her about syntax, etiquette, emojis, & tone (or lack of) #edtechchat
A2, @Flipgrid projects sharing information from the quietest. Green screen is an awesome way to create videos that share information in a fun way.
#edtechchat
I agree--EdTech tools can "seed" a conversation before it happens. Great for those who prefer to think thoughts through prior to speaking rather than enjoy making off the cuff remarks. #edtechchat
A2 digital discussion boards helps students learn how to disagree without being rude, collaboration on google docs allow for learning how to communicate with peers, emails to teachers can teach how to communicate with those in authority #edtechchat
Heard @TechedUpTeacher talk about having his students' blog go viral on a podcast the other day. https://t.co/qmnn4TPmaV I think this is a great spin on a classic essay assignment that fosters communication through #edtech. #edtechchat
A1b: Students need exposure to a broad variety of #edtech tools. Digital communication is becoming the standard of how we share and collaborate. It complements how we communicate and create using variety of media. #edtechchat
#edtechchat A2: Using slides in google can help kids overcome writing blocks. The clear format allows them to distill their statements down to clear, declarative statements. Sometimes writers are too focused on length of paragraphs and number of words, not substance
For me I want to do what we always did. Give a kid a journal and invite them to share pieces they love and crafted. Something changes when you plant the seeds from your own site. Agentive writing is change for good. #edtechchat (https://t.co/aLMaOGYwDA)
A2: Projects that require thoughtful responses. Use of social media and collaboration tools like discussion boards or a @Flipgrid as an alternative, maybe a Twitter chat ;-) #edtechchat
A2: for example, Ss in different parts of the world collaborating on a YT video - communicating through @flipgrid on world issues....so many ideas! #edtechchat
A2b and let’s not forget for some students the safety net of technology allows the shy student to find their voice where they would never feel comfortable sharing out loud in class #edtechchat
Yes! This! And I think we as scholars need to do better at searching out academic voices outside of the global north #edtechchat (https://t.co/a2kHz7Jg4t)
A2- in classrooms I love @VoiceThread for communicating. Elem Ss at two schools recorded or typed comments identifying parts of plants in pics and then responded in threaded comments by providing feedback to each other about their answers. #edtechchat
A2: Once I had high school students analyzing how people interact in online communities: how people share their ideas, beliefs, opinions, agreements and disagreements. Later—based on their findings— we did some discussions about netiquette. #edtechchat
A2: Communication in contemporary settings has Ss not just consuming what others have to say but creating and reflecting on their own perspectives as well => how and why is what they are learning relevant to their lives? #edtechchat
#edtechchat A2: ...also love using the dictation voice to text feature for kids who find the keyboard to be an impediment. Can be especially helpful for students who have a lot to say but get frustrated with the mechanics of writing.
Hello #edtechchat. Jumping in late after spending extra time learning about famous Americans from our local scout troop. 4th & 5th grade teacher from Maine looking to get on track.
Wonderful! Love seeing Skype in the classroom. We had one of our game designers visit a grade 3 classroom last spring for a STEM talk and they kids are still taking about it. The impact it has had was far beyond what we could have predicted. https://t.co/MMNfL4Vudz#edtechchat
A2: Students create their own e-portfolios as evidence of learning => they choose the artifacts that best meet their personal goals and write short reflections explaining their process #edtechchat
Moving from essays to blogs made a huge difference for many of my kids. I also think it’s more realistic to the writing they’ll do after school is over! #EdTechChat
A2. My history students blog to show their understanding. This is their way to show content understanding, practice digital citizenship, strengthen digital literacy & adapt for student needs. https://t.co/TrSHCEaWnW#edtechchat
A2 - I like to remind my Ts that we no longer have a dedicated speech class anymore. Using tools to encourage public speaking are essential in my opinion. #edtechchat
A2 Ss have a number of #edtech tools to help develop communication skills. Twitter and blogs provide updates to families. Padlets to share understanding of reading to group members. My favorite is screencasts of Minecraft creations to share content understanding. #edtechchat
A2 cont- MS and HS Ss use @voicethread in world language classes to practice communicating in their foreign language with others (Ts and Ss). In math classes, Ss can use VT annotation tool and audio comment to communicate their process for solving a problem! #edtechchat
I think we have a tendency to overthink communication ... whether it is #edtech or old school ... being able to express your thoughts and ideas have not changed ... only the medium has. Writing a blog is no different than writing on paper ... #edtechchat
Interactive model for the whole group and then use it as an option for writers who might be struggling. Has worked well for some #2E students for whom writing is a block due to challenges with personal narrative and episodic memory #autism#autismawareness#edtechchat#Q2
Q3. This is dependent on the scenario. If it allows me to hear a student voice that is usually quiet then it’s a win. If a student is able to share understanding they couldn’t using other means then it’s a win. #edtechchat
A3: I believe “success” would mean having students being more critical and thoughtful of how they communicate with others in online environments. If they think before posting, then something was accomplished ! #EdTechChat
A4 is the main point being made? Do they feel comfortable in using the tool at hand? Does the listener/learner understand what’s being told? If not, how can we develop the skills more #edtechchat
A3: Ss reaching authentic audiences => are we leveraging the power of #EdTech to amplify student voice so it is reaching and involving more people??? #edtechchat
A3 When they make a mistake, realize it, and understand why. There is a difference between a successful learning outcome, and a successful outcome. #EdTechChat
A2: I like starting in controlled discussion boards like Google Classroom where you can talk through how to comment and disagree in positive ways. Have seen some great teaching with this tool! #edtechchat
Terrific point. As edus, we can incorporate the digital into our learning env so that our lessons have relevancy to Ss' lives. In the end, Ss are learning how to write whether it is on paper, screen, or narrated video (where the writing happens before recording!) #edtechchat#NWP
A3- to be successful, Ss must be able to adapt to the “etiquette” of their chosen #edtech communication tool (space and format limitations, acceptable syntax, societal expectations, etc.) while still clearly delivering their message #edtechchat
A3: are Ss self-reflecting? Have they developed and thought about their digital footprint and #ditcit skills? Do their Qs lead to more Qs and re-thinking of their original stance? #edtechchat
#edtechchat A3: If it's working for them (they're successfully communicating ideas) then it's working. Second tier success is when they start using the #edtech as a tool, as a goto option when working on other projects. Is it really part of their everyday learning?
A3. Virality is an easy answer, but not necessarily a realistic one. Context plays a huge role - comprehensive depth is difficult to achieve in a tweet, for example. Case in point.. ;) #edtechchat
Success ... when the kid is able to express their ideas clearly ... with or without the #edtech ... I teach US History ... the tech is not nearly as important as the kid's ability to express their thoughts. #edtechchat
A3- success can also be measured by the level of engagement that others have in the communication; did it start a deeper convo with multiple perspectives being shared? #edtechchat
“We want to empower the edutuber community to come to use with proposals, and then agree upon a way that we can financially support those proposals and those creators" https://t.co/GFZgz1I3Pv#YouTube#edtechchat
A3 - There are many. When they realize how words can be read many ways and how important "tone" is. When they realize they don't have to say everything - they can write it, think it over, and delete it. #edtechchat
A3: I still say we should measure success by the student being able to tell a story and not rely on the tech as a crutch: where the story supersedes the tech #edtechchat
A3 Success in the #edtech realm would be the same as the analog realm. Are Ss able to clearly express their message to their intended audience? Edtech removes hurdles that some Ss face so it is a better option for some. #edtechchat
A3: defining success would vary depending on what the assignment was - but being able to clearly state your content for others to learn from would be successful. Learning how to converse in a constructive way is as well. #edtechchat
Having a predefined rubric is definitely beneficial. How does proper grammar and spelling compete with the online lexicon? wat r ur thoughts atm? 😜#edtechchat
A3: I am trying to work on this exact problem with @WinthropsCity & @tnochumson to help our AP History class summarize and present on all the presidents in a way to help them prep for the AP exam. Any ideas? #edtechchat
A4 that is the bazillion dollar questions since students are always looking for workarounds. All you can do is to remind them that things on the internet stick forever. #EdTechChat
So excited to be presenting in Boston at #ettsummit tomorrow! Digital Escape Rooms are fun ways to encourage collaboration while promoting critical thinking and problem solving skills.
#schoollibrarian#edtechchat
Exactly I have students write reply post or comment to every assignment page where they have to link to evidence and explain how that evidence meets stated criteria. reflections drive learning make assessment easier, more effective… https://t.co/sUkcGYmuEs
A4. Clearly discuss expectations including providing clear examples of “do’s & don’ts”, model appropriate use, treat concerns as open learning opportunities #edtechchat
#edtechchat A2: ...also love using the dictation voice to text feature for kids who find the keyboard to be an impediment. Can be especially helpful for students who have a lot to say but get frustrated with the mechanics of writing.
A4- have Ss work with Ts to co-construct rules and guidelines for #edtech communication so they have ownership and hold each other accountable. U can’t always prevent it, but u can take advantage of inappropriate communication as teaching moments. #edtechchat
A4 - Modeling is vitally important. Plenty of examples, good & bad must be presented and shared with students. Students must also understand their responses can have specific consequences and can be detrimental. #edtechchat
After Ss [think they] have finished writing something, I like for them to either 1) use text-to-speech to listen to their words read back to them, or 2) record themselves reading their writing. When they hear their own writing, they edit and self-correct better! #edtechchat
A4 “Prevention” is a word that creates closures and inability to use the tools. We may not prevent but by teaching digital citizenship, modeling in, stepping in when things get inappropriate we are leading our students in learning how to prevent it themselves. #edtechchat
Yes, first you remember teenagers have always done dumb stuff and look for ways to keep their dumb stuff private. Need to understand the power of what @zephoria and others say with context collapse #edtechchat (https://t.co/hS4pK2NiLa)
A4Last week Ss practiced posting notes for lit circles. We modeled using paper slips & talked about content, tone, & connection of the note. Challenged Ss to explain if notes in the digital realm should be different. Set expectations & practiced. Constant reminders #edtechchat
A4: Set clear expectations, give examples, model it. Really there is no way to prevent it, you can only guide and direct them in the ways they should go. #edtechchat
I *love* using the read-aloud technique to self-edit. 👍👍 How do you help students get over the self-consciousness of doing so while sitting next to classmates? #edtechchat
A4- you can also use “famous” examples of poor digital communication by different entertainment and political personalities and have them respond to and analyze those examples to come up with their own realization of what is appropriate and not. #edtechchat
A4: for example, a Grade 8 media teacher and class I work with, responded to Piers Morgan tweet about Daniel Craig and his papoose and how "unmasculine" it was. #edtechchat
Still I find giving kids a place online to call their own reduces inappropriate conversation. When you own the spaced it changes the way you shape your MEs #edtechchat (https://t.co/PHFX6HajKO)
#edtechchat A4: I have colleagues who have extensive social media networks, across many states. and have asked them to retweet something. I've demonstrated to students how quickly something can spread, how far, and how many interactions it can garner...
A4 - Communication. There are numerous examples that already exist. Talk about them. What happened? Why? Look at the footprint they've already left behind (or their parents/friends have left for them). Ownership of actions. #edtechchat
Have you shown them the wayback machine? We all thing things are lost and gone forever... but the internet archive is vast and sees everything. Deleting isn't often enough. Need to learn how to not put stuff out there in the first place. #edtechchat
#edtechchat A4.2: ...and, our number one rule of tech communications is "all communications is broadcast communications. If you say something, expect everyone to read/hear it." This applies to non-tech communications too #bullying
A2. My history students blog to show their understanding. This is their way to show content understanding, practice digital citizenship, strengthen digital literacy & adapt for student needs. https://t.co/TrSHCEaWnW#edtechchat
A5 I ask the learner #edtechchat but if you build a feed you can parse patterns across student submissions. Target knowledge at individual and group level (https://t.co/TbxmKE3O0C)
A5: all goes back to assessment - peer, self and teacher based on success criteria - have Ss used the descriptive feedback to improve? Can they name the learning? Can they describe their growth? #edtechchat
Thank you :) I realize if you check it out now it may look unused but it’s only because I’m on maternity leave. We’ll start up again when I return #edtechchat
A5: Transfer of skills. When they can apply the skills they learned in another context. Also if they can find ways that were not effective and offer suggestions to make it better. #edtechchat
I also think we need to look at the spaces of learning as the variable of interest and not the individual learner when trying to assess things like growth in communication skills. #edtechchat (https://t.co/nko4OufFIL)
A5 when you see students making connections with others due to the lesson. When you end the lesson without needing a digital citizen lesson in the middle of it! 😏 when you see transfer from that lesson to future lessons/skills #growth#edtechchat
A5- I know a lesson with #edtech communication is successful when Ss can transfer their learning into new experiences because they can extrapolate their learned skills for a broader application. #edtechchat
A5: A lesson is successful when you see the improvement and results in future projects and interactions. That’s the true sign of a successful ‘Aha!’ moment. #edtechchat
A5 I know an #edtech lesson has been successful in teaching communication when Ss volunteer to share work w/out being prompted, when Ps share links of Ss work, when Ss choose to extend lesson at home, when our developing skills become sound habits. #edtechchat#stuvoice
A5: what does communication look like? sound like? We came up with criteria for the diff subject areas and use that to provide Ss with feedback. I talk about this in my book. #edtechchat
I never expect my students to know everything, its tech, it changes, but I am successful when they know what they don't know and then know how to go out and learn it by constantly iterating on their last attempt. #edtechchat (https://t.co/wowDZqkySL)
Convincing doubting teachers that the #edtech can prove effectively is always a win in my opinion for Ss and Ts. These doubts lead to future exploration of lessons and ideas. #edtechchat
Yes! When colleagues who are developing their repertoire of #edtech integration adopt a tool/process because of student engagement and empowerment we know the Ss have communicated successfully! #edtechchat#WinnerWinnerChickenDinner
As Dewey said, the greatest communication is art. I will know we succeeded when the our world is flooded with the art and love of all our learners. #edtechchat (https://t.co/xBuuVmGouY)
My name is Tarja Nelsen and I'm a senior at Concordia College Moorhead and an elementary education major. Sorry for joining the chat late. #EdTechChat#CCED334
hello everyone, I am Nitesh. this is my first time i am participating in this twitter chat. I hope that i will learn something new this time. #edtechchat
A6. We provide resources for teachers to guide discussions around technology (particularly #gbl) and encourage them the further #blendedlearning in their classrooms. We also facilitate PD and idea sharing through online learning opportunties for Ts. #edtechchat
A6: Never underestimate the value of effective communication. Look at how projects with #edtech incorporate communication skills and the ‘real world’ value around them. #edtechchat
A6: A focus this year for me is to have students talk more about what they are learning #everyvoicematters will continue to use #edtech tools to have students tell their stories #edtechchat
A1. Edtech is important because it teaches students how to communicate with others in an effective way. Ss are already using technology but it will be a good to teach them to use it an educational way #EdTechChat#CCED334
A6 - Opportunities for communications must be given to students. Ts need to be intentional in developing these skills. The mindset to have Ss talking in any format must be targeted. More, more, more. #edtechchat
