Shalom! Welcome to tonight’s Thanksgiving-themed #CAedchat! Who are you, where are you from, and what Thanksgiving Feast treat are you most looking forward to? (Hint: mashed potatoes and gravy is the right answer, but you do you!)
Good evening, everyone! Thanks for joining us! I'm Shawn Wisley, your moderator tonight for “Gratitude Chat”. REAL TALK: this conversation is pre-programmed. I’m driving to San Diego to join my family for Thanksgiving this Sunday night. If I can chime in live...BONUS! #CAedchat
My name is Shawn Wisley, I’m a high school Assistant Principal in Selma, CA (originally from San Diego). Half of my Thanksgiving plate is a mashed potatoes volcano with gravy lava! The rest of the plate is superfluous. #CAedchat
A1: Mrs. Obremski, 2nd grade. She made me realize I wanted to be a teacher. She made me feel loved. (I was very bullied...same 36 kids for 8 years/Catholic school) I still have the monster pillow we made. #CAedchat
If you’d like to help with schools who lost everything in the fires, this is a community member’s recommendation. Thanks, @cueinc. #WeareCUE North Valley Community Foundation Butte County Schools Fire Relief Fund - North Valley Community Foundation https://t.co/ELQrQwtB8V
A1: I’m thankful for my senior Government teacher, Mr. Greg Gushwa. He helped guide me through a tumultuous period of my life, wherein I was starting to reject the politics of my upbringing and embrace my own sense of the world. He was non-judgemental and supportive! #CAedchat
A1: Grateful for Mr. Kosberg in 5th grade, who brought a great sense of play to our work, and Ms. Schneider in 6th grade, who created a warm and supportive atmosphere in the classroom
#caedchat
A1: One teacher I am so thankful for is Mrs. English. I was able to be a high school aide in her 1st grade class and it showed me how much magic elementary school teachers have. I knew then I wanted to grow up and be like her. #CAedchat
A1: I’m grateful to my kindergarten teacher Mrs Clark. She let me be the giant and wear the huge mask which we all ogled in the corner all year. #CAedchat
A1 Probably Mrs. Swanson, 2nd grade. She made me feel welcome. Her son worked for the local paper and took pictures of us blowing bubblegum. I didn't know how so I put the gum on the outside of my mouth. LOL #caedchat
Journalism and yearbook advisers are a special breed, and get to work with such awesome kids on meaningful work. I loved Mrs. Guinan (RIP) and Mrs. Vandenberg! #CAedchat
For sure! At a recent training, I had my participants email or text an influential person in their career right then and there. Fun and reflective activity.
A2: For an upper division elective, I took stained glass (rather than biblical anthropology)... I guess I loved a non-academic course at that point. Cutting glass, soldering it, making beautiful pieces of “art”...it was fun (and expensive!) #CAedchat
A1: I am thankful for Mr. Roenfanz- my 6th grade math teacher. He made math enjoyable and easy while being a great role model. I wouldn’t want to be a math teacher if it wasn’t for him! #caedchat
A2: Dr. Tony Brown from Baker University comes to mind. He had us over to his house to review while eating pizza & admiring his Pez dispenser collection. Intro to Psychology is where I hashed out my conversion from liberal questioner to follower of Christ! #oddbuttrue#CAedchat
A1: my 3rd grade teacher made a huge impact in my life and continues to do so now. I love that we have stayed in touch since my time in her class #caedchat
A2 Dr. DeRosset who showed me that women could speak their minds, that it was okay to be intelligent and female and enter a traditionally "men's" realm when she spoke at chapel. Took an independent study course with her for literature and LOVED IT! #caedchat#MoodyBibleInstitute
A2: I am still in college but I am thankful that @roper_lynn cares so deeply about what she is teaching and displays how to have an interact, student centered classroom #caedchat
A2: great question! We never talk about college! Grateful for Jenny Franchot, English professor at UC Berkeley (’87-91). She challenged me more directly, more productively than anyone in my academic life. I took her class then did an independent study with her
#caedchat
A2: I was lucky to learn from Professor Hamm multiple times at @CSULB she taught me about teaching students with special needs and student that are ELs. Her passion for all learners poured into her students. So thankful to learn from one of the best. #CAedchat
A2a Though, anecdote-wise, it would have to be Dr. Clark. He remembered dismissing my dad from his class because my mom was in labor with me! Wonderful teacher for Christian education and I learned a lot (so did my dad years before!) @MoodyBible#caedchat
My cousin WON the preaching competition years ago which meant she spoke at commencement (I think) and, if I remember correctly, was the first female to do so! #caedchat Both women and men can be inspirational behind the pulpit.
A3: @JennieBremer is my soul sister! She advocates for kids, marries pedagogy and tech in amazing ways. She truly has students engage and critically think in meaningful ways. And we are presenting together at #CUE19 Working with her is an honor #CAedchat#PYLlearns
A3: I am consistently impressed by the work of @DavidENorman and @MrFreds2200 // they are innovative, current, and fun. But their student-centered approach to learning and teaching is what impresses me most. #SelmaProud#CAedchat
A3 So grateful for the 2nd grade team I worked with years ago. 4 unique women who each taught me something different. It was a dream team and I look back on those years fondly. We'd swap kids. If they couldn't learn it from one of us, we'd send them to another. #NoEgo! #caedchat
There are not enough words for my teaching partner and teacher life savor Miss Wilson. She is incredibly wise and always willing to lend a helping hand. I love that we can share a door and blend our classrooms everyday. #CAedchat
A3 I can’t pick just 1! I’m incredibly proud of all the #teachers who work at @CompassCs! It was a real blessing to go through the @SanDiegoCOE@leadingedgecert w/a number of my staff over the summer & learn & grow alongside each of them! #caedchat
Mr. Snider and Mr. Anderson from Porterville College. They both were so passionate about their subjects, Geology and English. They made learning so exciting. We even went on field trips with Mr. Skider! #CAedchat
Shout out to some rockin’ journalism teachers at @PalyVikings - Rod Satterthwaite and Brian Wilson have been awesome additions to our school!
#caedchat
A2: Dr. Roberts professor of Child Development at CSU Sacramento. Shared Carole Dweck’s research in ‘91. Her 5 unit research course on Social Development was amazing #caedchat
A1: Miss Jackson in 5th grade is my all time favorite teacher. She praised my willingness to present my project first, because she knew how much I disliked public speaking. She also appreciated that and celebrated even the smallest achievements by her students.
#caedchat
A4a: Love working with my new principal @SHSbearsP but also have 2 show some love 2 my mentors, @DaveRios23 (congrats on the new job!) and Charles Coleman Jr. (not on Twitter). I have learned so much from these 3 men who have poured into me and shaped me. #kidsdeserveit#CAedchat
A4 I am truly grateful to Janice Weber @JMweb20 who guided me for 4 years in my role as TOSA. I learned the power of pausing, being gracious, striving for clarity. #CAedchat
A2: The professor that I have in mind was not only helping me with developing my skills/abilities but also looking out for me in regards to my personal life. She showed me that she cared for me.
#CAEdchat
A4: We started the school with 3 classes, therapists and Admin in ‘01. @johnt1952 was a principal, mentor and friend. Got me thru and led us as we laid the foundation for what is now a K-12 full inclusion campus. #caedchat
A4 To Mr. Radcliffe, high school AP, who had to talk to me about a headline I wrote (and didn't know was inappropriate!) and, more recently, @CVUSDsecondary who leads by listening, laughing, cheering, encouraging, (and forgiving random blurted thoughts. LOL) #caedchat
A4: I am unbelievably thankful for my rockstar of a boss @prin_dani_rami She leads the entire staff and pushes us to make our school better for our students. She models and embodies a true life long learner. She is just RAD! We are also great✌🏻Twins #CAedchat
Loving all the gratitude tonight on #CAedchat. We clearly would not be the people and teachers we are today without all these wonderful game changers! Love that we get to recognize all these awesome humans tonight.
A5b: (trying to answer this helped me realize that I have curated Twitter so much to be a PLN/edu-resource, that I don’t really use it for much else. Instagram is where I have more non-EDU follows… #CAedchat
A5 I’d like to share some thanks w/@ryanfewins & Shawna Ross from the @CMUniversity@CMUVolunteers. They brought me into the Volunteer Center family before I even enrolled in my first class & allowed me to be part of The David Garcia Project initiative! #caedchat#FiredUpForever
A6: I am so grateful for my wife, Shanah. She has shown me what it means to be loved unconditionally, she has shown me (by parenting our girls) what mothering should look like, and inspires me every day with her life-long commitment to growth and self-development. #CAedchat
A6: I am grateful to my parents for supporting me in my education over the years. Additionally, being a teacher/mom would have been impossible without their support for my 2 boys. #CAedchat
A6 I would have to express some #gratitude to my aunt, Cheryl. I’ve learned so much about the world around us through her (helped she was a #librarian for 33 years)! She is caring, kind, generous, funny; my sister & I are lucky to have her part of our family! #caedchat
A6 My husband, Greg. He spent last week w/me in Sacramento, encouraging me as I presented a session for the 1st time & walked about a mile each way from the hotel to the conference repeatedly to make sure I was safe. (Downtown Sacramento has a LOT of homeless!) #caedchat
A6: I am so thankful for my youngest brother. He is younger than me by 12 years, and still manages to teacher me so much about life. I love his ability to take things as they come and still find so much joy in life. He reminds me you can learn something from anyone. #CAedchat
A6 I am beyond grateful for my family especially my parents. They love me unconditionally and are my biggest cheerleaders! They are awesome! I am beyond grateful! Have a great thanksgiving everyone! #CAEdchat
Hello. #CEL18#ILedchat
I'm currently helping Students from another country avoid ABDUCTION by #ClassDoJo#classPSYCHO employees. They walked into a company during lunchtime, and pretended to work there. They've had STUDENTS in a vehicle for over an hour + 1/2. 😬 #CAedchat
A7: I am grateful to 25 amazing years in education. I have taught over 1000 students over the years. I work with a core group of about a dozen TOSAs who are dedicated beyond words. We support over 1200 amazing educators in #PYLUSD#PYLlearns#CAedchat
A6: I'm grateful for my parents who have been excellent example as teachers. They have shown me that it is more important to love and care for their students. I am blessed to have their support in my life and career. #CAEdchat
A7: Thankful I live in this age. I have type-1 diabetes, and in another time, would be dead. Now, I have access to insulin, a pump, continuous glucose monitoring (relayed to my Apple Watch!), tons of sugar-free and low-carb food and beverage options...glad to be alive! #CAedchat
A7: To answer the last question one more thing I’m the most thankful for is Jesus Christ! Thankful for the hope and true joy he brings to my life 💕 #caedchat
A7: I am grateful for breaks. They always come when they are most needed. Breaks give us the ability to spend time with friends and family. They also help teachers recharge their batteries. Breaks allow for self care which can be so easily forgotten in our profession. #CAedchat
A7 I'm thankful for the opportunities technology provides to allow me to connect with people all over the world, to learn, share, and be inspired! From YouTube videos to blog posts to tweets, I'm constantly learning and sharing with others! #PLN#caedchat
